Escalating Right-Wing Attacks on the LGBTQ+ Community

In 2022, the American right has sharply escalated its attacks on gay and transgender people and the broader queer community. This escalation shows up in the Crowd Counting Consortium’s data as a steep and sustained increase in the rate of right-wing demonstrations pushing anti-LGBTQ+ claims.

These anti-LGBTQ+ actions represent a still-modest but growing fraction of all right-wing protests and demonstrations in the U.S. In CCC’s data, the monthly share of right-wing events with anti-LGBTQ+ claims stayed at or close to zero from the start of collection in 2017 until mid-2022. By September of this year, however, it had increased to about 16 percent.

A substantial share of these recent anti-LGBTQ+ events have explicitly targeted transgender people.

Hate crimes and discrimination would become acceptable under Donald Trump. As a black woman, my life and my future is at stake in this election. I’m pretty light skinned, but my mom? She’s not. I fear for her life and mine. Remember Matthew Shepherd? His brutal murder wouldn’t even be considered a hate crime under Trump’s policies. We must also save Palestine. And I believe Kamala will do that.

But even if you don’t believe her. Please understand what Trump will do to all minorities in this country. Under Trump’s policies women can be raped and forced to carry their rapists children. Under his policies, Women can be discriminated against in the workplace if their passion, education, and training leans towards a male dominated field. Divorce rights for women will be restricted immensely which will force thousands of women to stay with their abusers because not all victims of domestic violence have enough evidence to get a divorce if a no fault divorce is off the table. Even if they do, they can be killed while they are trying to prove they were abused. Police brutality against blacks people will escalate. I could go on and on and on. But just as lives are at stake in Palestine, lives are at stake here. Please, vote blue. Even if you don’t love Kamala, please vote to save the lives of your mothers, sisters, and daughters. Vote to save the life of your friends and family who are not white. Vote to save the lives of your friends and family who are part of the LGBTQ community. All of us knows someone who falls into one of these categories. Or you might be that someone yourself.

This is something that gay and bi people seem to be unable to understand. Our identity and our lives exclude men and the world will kill us to stop that from happening. We deserve to have the ability to protect and maintain non male spaces, identities, and lives.

Moving!

So as many of you know, my husband and I are trying to move states to escape bigotry and potential violence of our home state of Texas for the relative safety of California where my Metamour @wehavelightandfury lives.

Not much changed.

It's looking more likely that we'll be moving this summer and I'm excited! Unfortunately we will have to be majorly digging into our savings and that's not ideal... Literally every penny counts at this point and I don't know how to encourage donations.

Five years before Fredric Wertham’s infamous Seduction of the Innocent essay and the subsequent spark of anti-comic sentiment that nearly killed the industry along with the introduction of the Comics Code Authority and the Senate Subcommittee Hearing into Juvenile Delinquency, Gershon Legman had explored similarly sentiments in Love and Death: A Study in Censorship (1949).

The belief that the violence of pre-code comics was harmful to children and the approach of the ‘Superman model’ as inherently fascist explored in Legman’s work would form much of the basis for Wertham’s later criticism and the crusade against comics. Interestingly enough, Gershon Legman is widely believe to have been gay himself.
