I'm going back to the post from a few days ago, this one, where I explained that Lily didn't use any magic to protect Harry, I found myself arguing with some users on Tiktok about this and an important issue came up.
The creator of the post gave Lily the credit for saving Harry, which is partly true, but then others started saying that Lily was one of the most powerful witches of her generation, that her magic defeated Voldemort etc.
And I wrote this:
As you can imagine I unleashed hell xD Now among the various answers I received there were these:
Here it really means not knowing the canon, what Snape did is exactly the reason why Harry survived. But rather than admit it some fans steal the credit from Snape (and of course I know, here Snape did not intentionally save Harry, but his request for Mercy for Lily is really the only real reason why Harry was protected in the end)
It has nothing to do with whether I'm Snape Stan or not, it's literally canon but we know that, Snape haters DON'T KNOW THE CANON
These people don't even know how to argue, they admit they are not mature and accuse you of not saying anything canonical without proving it, because they can't do it since I said canonical things.
But the best was the creator of the post himself who wrote me this:
This borders on Gaslighting, really how absurd is it? The credit, whether you like it or not, is Snape's, the creator is the first one who stole a credit from Snape and gave it incorrectly to Lily.
It would be like if someone made a post saying when Ron was brave to kill Nagini and when someone else comes to tell him that no, Nagini was killed by Neville then the creator accused you of stealing Ron's credits, because you hate him and you're a Dramione shipper. People really have to learn to read the books and have a critical sense before accusing people and distorting the canon.
And above all, don't implicitly bring feminism into it, it's very right to recognize the merits of women (even fictional ones) but instead giving them credits that don't belong to them is not a good way to praise them, in fact it has the opposite effect.
Lily was a great potion maker, a great magician, a great witch who fought Voldemort and faced him head on. She doesn't need you to rob other characters of credit to give it to her.
ADDITION
Since someone also wrote me privately about this I repeat, this is NOT MY THEORY, this is canonical, the quotes above are from books where everything is shown. If that were not enough, the author also stated it in an interview from 2005, you can read it here:
I report her exact words:
Don't you want to ask me why James's death didn't protect Lily and Harry? There’s your answer, you've just answered your own question, because she could have lived and chose to die. James was going to be killed anyway. Do you see what I mean? I’m not saying James wasn't ready to; he died trying to protect his family but he was going to be murdered anyway. He had no - he wasn't given a choice, so he rushed into it in a kind of animal way, I think there are distinctions in courage. James was immensely brave. But the caliber of Lily's bravery was, I think in this instance, higher because she could have saved herself. Now any mother, any normal mother would have done what Lily did. So in that sense her courage too was of an animal quality but she was given time to choose. James wasn't. It's like an intruder entering your house, isn't it? You would instinctively rush them. But if in cold blood you were told, "Get out of the way," you know, what would you do? I mean, I don't think any mother would stand aside from their child. But does that answer it? She did very consciously lay down her life. She had a clear choice.

I am so done with this situation and I feel like addressing it.
Jegulus shippers not only mistag posts, but have now started tagging their anti-Jily bullshit posts under the Jily tag and forcing the rest of us to read that shit and I am done with it.
How dare you go on the tag of a ship to rant about how they don't make sense to you when you have an entire account dedicated to a crackship with no canon basis between two characters who would never look twice at one another? "She hated him, she couldn't have changed her mind." Well, she did not and why she did was clearly explained in the books, so maybe read before you comment idiotic things. The breakdown of her friendship with Snape and James’ change of attitude and them becoming Head Boy and Head Girl together are the reason. Also, keep your fake love for Lily to yourselves because no one's buying it. You love Lily so much and yet, 90% of Lily-centred content is still coming from Jily shippers, you know, the people who you claim give her no personality outside of being James' wife and Harry's mother. While in Jegulus content, she's either treated as a surrogate or James' second choice or in a barely mentioned w/w with any random character you decide to pair her with. Also, if James is so horrible to the point you claim she deserves better than him how come you have entire accounts dedicated to him and a ship involving him? James is perfect for your darling boy Reggie but a terrible partner for Lily?
Also, I really do not give a single fuck if you don't want to ship Jily because boo hoo, Jily shippers are so mean to you. No one is ruining your online experience, no one is not allowing you to have fun. YOU ARE THE ONES DOING THAT TO EVERYONE ELSE. With constant mistagging to gain traction on your posts, literally invading every character/ship tags with your bullshit, constantly commenting under Jily content begging for Jegulus versions of it or inserting Jegulus/Regulus. There is a reason why most people who do not ship Jegulus do not like you. It's not jealousy or a big conspiracy. Most of you are just delusional and very fucking annoying.

About the gender in hp thing: I know JKR wrote the books wanting the patriarchy to have minimal impact on the world but even through a couple of the metas you wrote you can see that that’s not the case. In your character crying post there’s a clear implication that showing that kind of emotion is a weakness but also that it is not masculine. Equating strength with masculinity is foundational for cultures with strong patriarchies, and this idea infests every other aspect of their lives. Idk because of that and many other reasons I have a very hard time of writing the wizarding world as anything other than a patriarchy
This is a watsonian analysis vs doylist analysis issue.
I 100% do think that JKR went out of her way to really, really downplay the importance of gender in her worldbuilding - and this contributes a lot to the specific feel of the world. You could genderflip, idk. Neville. Snape. Draco. Hermione. McGonagall. and almost no plot elements or character dynamics would change. (Maybe James would bully Severus slightly differently? Idk. He honestly might not.)
Compare HP to something like His Dark Materials, another British fantasy series released at the same time, marketed to the same demographic... in which gender politics are REALLY important. Lyra conforming or not conforming to specific gender norms hugely impacts the way a lot of other characters treat her. So much of Mrs. Coulter's character has to do with how she's navigated the back ways and side avenues into power, because the patriarchy that runs *that* world is extremely explicit and plot relevant, and there's a lot she just can't do.
Now is JKR *good* at writing a gender-blind world? Not really no. So she's stripped out the importance of gender in a fairly surface way, while leaving evidence of the foundations intact. Everyone's a het couple, women take the husband's last name, Molly and Petunia are at home while their husbands work and there's no inverse of that situation, Fleur's father walks her down the aisle at her wedding, it's important that Hermione be able to tame her hair when she wants to, but for Harry it doesn't matter...
There is ALSO the narrative voice poking through and putting its own spin on everything. This is where we start getting judgment (for example) directed both at girls who are too feminine, and at girls who aren't feminine enough. Or sexual assault not really "sticking" if it's directed at boys. We don't have a character talking, in-universe, about how it's wrong for a woman not to want children. We just have a book where the only women who don't have kids (or take care of kids) are villains. Same thing with masculinity = strength = no crying. That's something the narrative framing / bias of the author brings to the table, but it's kept out of the mechanics of the magical world. I guess you could say Harry and Draco equate crying/fainting with weakness (but not explicitly anti-masculinity)... but then Lupin goes out of his way to separate 'fainting' from 'weakness' anyway.
Interestingly, gender is much more baked into the muggle worldbuilding. (Part of why I think leaving that aspect out of the wizarding world was a deliberate choice.) Smeltings is an all-boys school, so is St Brutus.' Dudley teases Harry about his "boyfriend" Cedric, Vernon sizes up Arthur and Mad-Eye by how masculine they are. At the beginning of Book 4, Dudley's diet is this very gendered conflict between Vernon and Petunia, where Vernon doesn't want a "little nancy boy for a son" - and that is one of the only truly gendered insults in the whole series. "Crybaby" almost counts... but the Slytherins tease Hermione for crying too, so idk. They tend to go for pretty gender-neutral insults, like "poor" "unimportant parents" "looks like a chipmunk" ... etc.
Like... I'm trying to imagine a scene were Lucius lays into Draco for not being masculine enough, and I can't. I think that in a canon-compliant fic, a scene like that would feel odd. The conflict would need to be framed more like a "you disgrace the name of Malfoy with your weakness" or "never tell anyone outside the family what you're thinking" or "your believe yourself to be more intelligent than you truly are." Not "you need to man up."

Sometimes i wojder wtf is wrong with harry in 6th book because in quidditch game where he became captain, malfoy doesn't play and he told to substitue slytherin seeker that how much malfoy paid you to play for him and he even doesn't know why he said it and before game, he sees malfoy with two girls and asks where are you going? Like he's gonna answer bruh😂
First, I love the parallels between Harry and Draco in book 6 - like Harry suddenly playing more like Draco in the game where Draco isn't there (because yelling something to distract a player is SUCH a Draco tactic).
Second of all, I will never be over the fact that in canon Harry's actual reaction to Draco not playing is to lose interest in Quidditch, even though Ginny, his supposed love interest, is on the team and it's one of his main ways to spend time with her; that feels like something out of a rabidly pro-drarry, anti-hinny spitefic, but it's in the actual books. What?!
Third, I think Harry straight up asking Draco where he's going is super interesting. Like yeah of course Draco won't tell him. But it's part of a pattern where Harry is weirdly comfortable talking to Draco. Just like he'll ask him stuff in book 3 or book 5 when he wants info. Their conversations are obviously very antagonistic but on an almost subconscious level they feel comfortable around each other. Just like they're often very physically close to each other when they argue - to the point that they can whisper to each other - and don't mind (even though Harry is not generally very physical or comfortable around people he's not super close to). I can't imagine James and Snape or Ron & Draco interacting in this way. They're so drawn to each other. It's fascinating.

what would tom riddle's patronus?
Okay, it took me some time to answer this ask since I needed to spend some time thinking. I didn't really have an answer in mind until your question. It's just something I apparently never thought about. So I was interested in finding the most canon-adjacent answer I can for if Tom Riddle/Voldemort could cast a patronus, what would it be.
So, my approach to finding the right animal was based on a few factors, the first of which:
How exactly is the form your Patronus takes determined?
Because we don't actually get a straight answer in the books. We know Patroni can change with a person, but we don't exactly get an answer on what their form represents and why some couples have matching Patroni.
Basically, I don't know what you expected, Anon, but what you're getting is some rambling about the magical theory behind the Patronus charm followed by why that means Tom gets a certain animal over another.
So, let's start with the basics, the incantation:
"Expecto Patronum"
This is in Latin and literally translates to: "I await/expect a defender"
And Remus Lupin explains what the Patronus charm is as:
“Well, when it works correctly, it conjures up a Patronus,” said Lupin, “which is a kind of anti-dementor — a guardian that acts as a shield between you and the dementor.” ... “The Patronus is a kind of positive force, a projection of the very things that the dementor feeds upon — hope, happiness, the desire to survive — but it cannot feel despair, as real humans can, so the dementors can’t hurt it. But I must warn you, Harry, that the charm might be too advanced for you. Many qualified wizards have difficulty with it.”
(POA, page 237)
We also know the patronus is cast by thinking of a happy memory — well, not really. The memory isn't really important; the emotion is. The memory is to help you have the right happy feelings that can fuel a Patronus. "You got to mean it" just like with an unforgivable.
So, what does it tell us about the Patronus:
We have a defender made out of happiness, literally.
This already sounds like something Tom Riddle would struggle with. I don't really see canon Tom Riddle/Voldemort being capable of producing one, but let's assume he can in some hypothetical AU. Let's take a look at a few patroni to see how their form is chosen and why.
Obviously, we have Harry's (and James') stag. A stag symbolizes many things in different cultures, but deer (both Stags and Does, like Lily and Snape) in general symbolize:
The cycle of life and death
Agility and grace
Bravery
Nobility
All this fits the Potters quite well. The nobility and bravery of Gryffindor and the cycle between life and death. Stags actually represent regeneration, as in a return from death, which fits with the Potters' connection to the Paverells and death perfectly.
Stags also symbolize authority, strength, leadership, and fatherhood, while does symbolize femininity, grace, intuition, and devotion. All in all, both animals fit James and Lily well. And while the stag does fit Harry (to a degree), I don't think his Patronus represents him.
I think Harry's patronus is a stag because James' patronus was a stag. Harry was actually convinced his father cast the Patronus when he first saw it in POA. And it makes sense.
I don't remember where I saw this theory, but it essentially was that your patrons would represent a person or an idea that you feel will defend you. It's why certain couples have matching Patroni, why a Patronus can change when you or your feelings about people change.
And Harry, when he casts his Patronus, the idea of his father who he never knew but would have protected him is the idea represented in Harry's Patronus. It's a stag like James' not because Harry and James are so similar (they have very different personalities actually) but because Harry's Patronus is James. It's a stag because James was a stag, and Harry is calling the concept of his father to defend him.
Following this logic, Lily's Patronus is a doe, because she is the doe. Lily's defender is herself. Courageous, noble, graceful and devoted. Lily's devotion to her son is what literally sets the series into motion. The reason she and James match is that they always have. He was always represented by the stag and she was always represented by the doe. Their Patroni aren't matching because of their relationship with each other, but because they are so compatible their Patroni matched from the get-go.
Snape's Patronus is a doe because of Lily. Lily is represented by the doe. As she was Snape's first friend and defender, whenever he calls for a protector, it's Lily.
Let's look at a few other Patroni, like Hermione's otter:
Playfulness
Joy
Family and close-knit friendships
Loyalty
All of this doesn't really sound like Hermione. Ron's Jack Russell Terrier on the other hand:
Loyalty
Courage
Playfulness
Cleverness
Protectiveness
Tanasity
Does sound very in line with who Ron is.
But then who does Hermione's otter represent? Well, an otter is from the weasel family and the list of characteristics looks closer to Ron's list of traits than Hermione's. I think Hermione's otter represents Ron who did step in to defend her since the troll incident in their first year multiple times.
So, where does that leave Tom Riddle?
Well, we established the Patronus becomes your defender, and in Tom's case, it'll be himself. Tom is distrustful and sees himself as more capable than anyone else. Not to mention he never had a real connection or person in his life he could call upon to defend him. So, whatever animal his Patronus is would represent himself as his own defender.
So, which animal represents Tom best?
The first animal I thought of, is of course: the serpent. Snakes are heavily associated with Tom (for obvious reasons) and is an animal we know he has a soft spot for. When looking at what snakes represent, you can see why he is associated with them:
Deceit
Transformation
Power
Regeneration and rebirth (shedding their skin)
Healing (Cadcadeus)
For the most part, the list seems to fit him well. Specifically their association with rebirth and the cycle of life and death by shedding their skin. Deceit and power are also right up Tom's alley. And even transformation considering he rewrote his entire identity to become Voldemort.
But, just "snake" wasn't good enough for me, I wanted to know which kind. And as I wanted his Patronus to be as rare as Harry's stag, I went to the list of official Pottermore possible Patroni to find a snake that is as hard to get in the test as the stag while not being magical.
(Magical Patroni are incredibly rare and to have yourself represented by a magical creature in your Patronus you need to be incredibly unique or incredibly full of yourself. At least, that's how I see it)
And low and behold, there was one on the aforementioned list:
The King Cobra
So I looked up if this snake has any interesting additional unique symbolism that would fit Tom. And, well, there was:
Authority and Leadership
Aggression and Fearlessness
Destruction and Creation
Intelligence and Cunning
Which all in all sounds fitting for Tom Riddle.
I also continued reading and apparently, snakes are associated with lightning by some Native American tribes. And when I saw that I was sold on the idea. Considering how the killing curse is represented by lightning (Harry's scar and the lightning-struck tower being the name of the chapter Dumbledore dies in). It feels appropriate with Tom's connection with snakes.
The King Cobra is actually not really a Cobra and is considered a unique breed of snake, which Tom would approve of. It's also the longest venomous snake and its venom can result in a rapid fatality, as soon as 30 minutes following a bite. It's also a cannibal snake that eats other snakes, including its own kind.
Overall it just fits perfectly, both in traits, symbolism, and how rare and dangerous it is. So, for your question, I think Tom Riddle's Patronus, if he could cast one, would be a King Cobra.

For context: the TikTok was about proving Snape isn't a racist.
A comment said: bruh he outed Remus and caused a new wave of anti werewolf laws he didn’t own up to his biases
Whereas I then said: I didn't say it didn't happen. however, the movies and the books explain it differently. Snape HAD to tell Dumbledore, three students almost died thanks to that idiot not drinking the one potion. In the movies it happened more or less out of spite. but the books give urgency and showing that harry obvious weighed more than a furbal with an IQ of a toddler. I mean, not remembering the potion that keeps a person sane during the change? he's better off jobless
They then said what the picture gave: I like how you ignore.......
Whereas I then said: you know what I love about bs? it stays bs. 😂. that's the most wonderful thing in the world. I color coded every single flipping page of the HP book series. but sure. you somehow fabricated "he was cursed to forget his potion" out of where? Not the original book series of jkr, that's for sure. Well, ill say this in the kindest way possible. I don't fight headcanon fanatics. everything is possible with a headcanon because it's not real, never happened in the og books. So you can take your fanfic brainrot and go delusion someone else willing to scrape your brilliant ideas, dont you agree? Wonderful assumption for sure. 🙄 (Ps: I previously said that Remus being outed in that was was movie but in the books it was different kind of outing)
So, Remus yes? I'm conflicted. I dislike him as a character but I love him in my fanon form. Apologetic, becoming what tougher when his life depends on it, isn't cowering the shadow and etc.
But let's be real. Remus being outed isn't crazy. He did NOT take the one thing that kept him from becoming a blood thirsty lycan like Fenrir. How are people still having shits in their ears? What would you do if you were being maimed but some bitch ass fan said "oh, but he couldn't help it. He forgot uwu"
I'd probably throw that fan with Remus in Azkaban for all I care. He got a chance, with THE ideal potion but bitches it for Sirius. And people LOVE that. He forgot for Sirius for those sick wolfstar fans that shoehorn that into something romantic.
Nothing is wrong with that ship, but people, at least be somewhat realistic. If Snape hasn't done a thing, Dumbledore who can use legillimens like many OTHER (*ahem* discriminating) wizards and witches would've seen what happened if the golden trio met the wrong kind of nosy ass magical people.
This is Remus his fault. Not Snape's, not dumbles, not Voldemort, not Sirius, not golden trio, not de or anyone else matter of fact. Remus Frickin Lupin fucked it up himself.
Remus fans act as if Severus himself made lupin the way he was and get more hate than Fenrir greyback himself. Disgusting fucking fans. Honestly, the characters are loveable without such psychotic fans surrounding said canonically shitty characters.
Remus is a fuck up, he stayed that, and sure, we love our fanon Remus but please don't mix shit up.

the toxic friendship of the marauders.
many marauders fans (not all of them I LOVE marauders fans who don't whitewash their characters) say that: "they were very close".
I was surprised because in Snape's worst memory, Sirius literally insults Peter, then in other scenes Sirius mentions that he is bored and wishes it were "a full moon", I am even more surprised, I may be anti Remus but even I know that no illness should be used as entertainment for others.
This just proves my point: Sirius and James only focused on themselves and tried to be inferior to Remus and Peter, although well James did more for Remus than for Peter, I never heard of Sirius or James doing anything for Peter, which by the way They only considered it thanks to Remus.
edit: If you love the marauders so much, don't recast Peter as handsome, put him as he is in canon.

Okay, this question has been making me roll and grit my teeth at night. Why do people make Sirius, Regulus, and Barty Crouch so feminine? I don't get it. It's almost weird in a way because Sirius seems pretty masculine to me, he just has long hair and a flamboyant personality. Regulus, we don't even know much about the guy and already I see fanart of his being a twink. And Crouch...I don't understand that.
I am not against mlm ships or gay characters/character head cannons. I myself believe that Snape is probably under that trans or gender-neutral flag (he radiates that energy), and that he is queer coded. But those guys? Ehh...it's weird how there's always a "top" and "bottom" for these kinds of things, don't you think? Can't they both just be masculine?
But can we agree that being gay doesn't mean being feminine? Can we understand that even if you make a crack ship or write slash, it doesn't mean you have to change the damn characters' personalities? I mean, if you want to pair Sirius with every male character in the saga, that’s totally fine, but don't create another character that has nothing to do with Sirius to fit your sexist and fetishistic stereotypes, seriously. They constantly reproduce dom/sub dynamics in homosexual relationships, with masculinized and feminized types, thus continuing stereotypes inherited from the heteronormative system. They're not doing anything radical, anti-system, or against J.K. Rowling; they’re turning Sirius into a stereotype traditionally assigned to women and making his supposed partners alpha males, reproducing these harmful dynamics. Sirius isn't feminine; Sirius is the most masculine of the four Marauders. Otherwise, Rowling wouldn’t bother mentioning a hundred times that he was super handsome, liked by the girls, had a motorcycle, or had posters of girls in bikinis on the wall. Rowling makes a big point of hypermasculinizing Sirius Black. Sirius is a tough guy from a hegemonic masculinity perspective—impulsive, violent, passionate, and a bastard when he wants to be. What you see in that fandom isn't Sirius; it's a damn OC they've created and named after him. He doesn't even physically resemble Sirius when they draw him because they always make him short and skinny when canonically, Sirius was the tallest of the four, and Rowling emphasizes how tall and intimidating he is multiple times.
I don't care about the ships because I think you can ship anything except some weird stuff, but just because you can ship anything doesn't mean you have free rein to make the characters hyper-OOC and have the audacity to convince the audience that it fits with the canon. No, it doesn't fit. If I want to read a Sirius x (insert any character), I want to read about Sirius Black, not some cheap imitator that the real Sirius Black would probably bully to exhaustion. Barty Crouch wasn't a sassy, cunty "uwu" type. Everyone was shocked when Barty turned out to be a Death Eater; his father describes him as someone who got excellent grades, seemingly a kid who flew under the radar, which is why everyone was so shocked when he turned out to be one of Voldy's boys. These people have turned him into a walking caricature, some kind of 80s diva that the real Barty never was. Again, they've created a character that doesn't exist and given him a canon name. And Regulus Black... What they've done with Regulus is also scandalous. In the end, they've turned him into a whiny, spineless, hyper-"feminized" character so that James can be the alpha male who saves him. Don't they see how terribly problematic these stereotypes are and the disservice they do to the community? I mean, they boast about being champions of LGBTQ+ representation, but all they do is reproduce super toxic and harmful clichés that perpetuate dynamics from a misogynistic and sexist heteronormative perspective. And on top of that, they do all this by completely changing the characters, dismembering them, stripping them of every ounce of their true personalities, and replacing it with their made-up nonsense.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to be added to the Taglist, I have tried adding everyone but some blogs cannot be added? I will keep trying for you all 🖤
Apparating into Hogsmeade just outside the anti-apparition jinx perimeter was the only feasible way you could get close to the castle, but it was extremely dangerous, to say the least. There was a bounty upon all of your heads, none more than Harry who had been marked as undesirable number 1. Your plan was to sneak in through the Honeydukes cellar passageway, navigating Hogmeade in the dark just as you had the night George lost his ear to confront Snape. You wished you had the marauders map on your possession and had cursed yourself multiple times for not keeping it to hand, knowing that Grimmauld place was much too risky to return to now that Yaxley had discovered the location of the safe house after fleeing the ministry.
You had not anticipated the alarm that sounded out the second you all apparated into Hogmeade, the Caterwauling charm forcing you to run for cover the second your feet landed on the ground. Snatchers and death eaters were hot on your tails as you hid behind folded tables in the market, holding your breath and trying to control your shaking limbs. Snow covered the ground and you tried your hardest to hide your tracks but it was too late, all of you huddled together beneath a table as footsteps approached. Only when another alarm sounded off in the distance did the men relent and began running to investigate, assuming it to be Harry.
You stood quickly and beckoned the rest of your group to follow you, trying to slip through the jitty that ran between the Hog's Head and the side entrance to Honeydukes. Your heart sunk as you spotted a newly installed railing too late, cornering you and preventing you from escaping. You turned to Ron with a look of fear in your eyes, desperately trying to think up a backup plan as you tried to pull the secret passageways from your memory.
"Potter, in here!" A voice whispered from the side, urging you to run forward for cover.
A large portrait on the wall grabbed your attention immediately, a young girl with a clipped smile and distant eyes.
"You bloody fools, what were you thinking coming here?" The deep voice said, walking into the room. His likeness to your ex-headmaster was striking though not in the way that they were identical but almost as if they had the same kind eyes and long white hair and beards. "Have you any idea how dangerous it is?"
"You're Aberforth, Dumbledore's brother," Harry says, watching as the man briefly pauses mid-step before continuing on to peak out the shuttered windows, looking for any sign of suspicion with a vague noise of confirmation.
Aberforth kindly fetched some food and drink for you all though you don't launch for it as Ron and Hermione do, your stomach in knots about the next task.
"We need to get into the castle, tonight," Harry says with urgency, also not moving to reach for the food.
When Aberforth turns to him with a look of confusion and disgust, Harry presses, "Dumbledore gave us a job to do."
"Did he now?" Aberforth replies sneakily, pouring himself a drink. "Nice job? Easy?" He asks sarcastically, implying a conflict between them and previous knowledge of Albus' riddle like tasks. His face beamed with a sardonic smile that didn't reach his eyes, though he clearly found it an amusing situation.
"We've been hunting Horcruxes," Harry admits. Your gaze shoots your to him in surprise and alarm that he'd admitted it out loud to a man you barely knew. In truth, you had been more than hesitant about things since the incident with Bathilda, not to mention your multiple uses of Polyjuice Potion in the last few months alone. Quite frankly, you didn't trust anyone to be who they claimed to be.
"We think the last one's inside the castle, but we'll need your help getting in," Harry says. The tension on the room lingers as Aberforth places down his drink, eyeing Harry with suspicion, not astounded at the claim as you had anticipated him to act.
"That's not a job my brother's given you, it's a suicide mission. Do yourself a favor boy. Go home. Live a little longer."
"Dumbledore trusted me, to see this through," Harry counters, unfazed by Aberforth's harsh tone.
"What makes you think you can trust
him! What makes you think you can believe anything my brother told you! In all the time you knew him, did he ever mention my name? Did he ever mention hers?" Aberforth gestures to the painting of the young girl you'd spotted upon entering, her vacant expression never changing even as she's addressed.
"Why should he?" Harry begins to say, before Aberforth interjects.
"Keep secrets? You tell me." He goads.
"I trusted him."
"That's a boys answer," Aberforth dismisses. You cast a glance at Hermione as the two argue back and forth, keeping surprisingly cool under the tension. Ron, standing beside Hermione, looks less concerned as he continues to eat, shoving his mouth full of food as he watches the confrontation before him. "A boy who goes chasing Horcruxes on the word of a man who wouldn't even tell him
where to start. You're lying. Not just to me, which doesn't matter, but to yourself as well. That's what a fool does." Aberforth has taken a few steps towards Harry but he stands resolute. "You don't strike me as a fool, Harry Potter. So I'll ask you again. There must be a reason."
Harry remains resolute even as Aberforth moves ever closer to him, the tension lingeries thickly in the air as you await Harry's answer.
"I'm not interested in what happened between you and your brother, I don't care that you've given up. I trust the man I knew. We need to get into the castle tonight."
Ron's gaze flickers to you and you look upon eachother with an unreadable expression, both relating caution as you anticipate Aberforth's next move. Harry stands strong, not cowering under the dark gaze of your helper. After several seconds of intense, silent exchange, Aberforth shifts his gaze to the painting of the girl, his eyes softening as he glances at her, relenting.
The girl gives a nod, still holding her wistful smile and turns, waking off into the distance of the oil painting, her form getting increasingly smaller the further she walks.
"Where've you sent her?" Asks Harry, curiously watching the girl disappear from the frame.
"You'll see soon enough," Aberforth replies, a little cagey.
"That's Ariana, isn't it? Your sister. She's beautiful," you say, trying to pull Aberforth back on to your side, feeling like a disquiet was pulling at him and Harry that you didn't want to linger.
"She'll always be beautiful," Aberforth says, glancing at you briefly. You nod with a small smile, understanding his wistful tone.
"She died very young, didn't she," Hermione adds delicately, though Aberforth doesn't glance at her, nor reply for a few moments as Hermione's statement hangs in the air.
"My brother sacrificed many things, in his journey to find power, including Ariana. She was devoted to him -- he gave her everything, but time."
"Thank you Mr Dumbledore," you say quietly. He stares at you for a moment with an unreadable expression before nodding curtly and walking into the other room up the stone steps. You catch Ron's eyes who looks at you in question but you shoot him a harsh glare, telling him to back off. The four of you stand in awkward silence for a few moments, looking around the sparse room and waiting for your next instruction or sign.
"She's coming back! And she's got someone with her!" Hermione calls, scrutinising the painting as a very small figure emerges from the back of the canvas. The whole scene is slightly ominous as you wait for the image to become clear, a sense of dread filling you as you consider who would be with her. Had you been set up?
"Who's that with her?" Ron asks, moving to stand closer as you all fixate on the second figure, increasing in size as they move closer, seeing that the second person was limping. The second person moves behind the girl, concealed completely as the frame around the painting creaks open from the right side. You draw your wand, ready for whatever might be unleashed but frown as you see the opening to a dark and long tunnel, revealing exactly who was stepping closer. "Bloody hell!"
"Neville!" Harry says with a smile, thankful to see an old friend. "You look
"Like hell I reckon," Neville says, crouching down with his wand in his hand. His cardigan is marked and dirty, much like his face that holds scars and fresh cuts. "This is nothing. Seamus is worse. You'll see." He looks at you, then Hermione and then Ron, all with a smile as you greet eachother.
"Hey, Ab. We've got a couple more coming through," he says, turning to Aberforth and addressing him with a familiarity which tells you everything you need to know about the kind bar owner who had been exactly who he stated to be.
"I don't remember this being on the Marauder's Map," you say quietly with a tone of suspicion, looking at the walls of the damp and dark tunnel that surrounds you, completely unfamiliar to even you. Having George and Fred as best friends turned lovers ensured that you knew every secret passageway and hiding place in the castle, and this was one you had never found before.
"That's because it never existed till now. The seven secret passages were sealed off before the start of the year. This is the only way in or out now. The grounds are crawling with Death Eaters and Dementors," Neville explains, leading the way with his wand extended, exuding light to guide your path.
"How bad is it with Snape as Headmaster?" Hermione asks. Even in the semi-darkness you notice her gaze flicking to you at the mention of your old potion master and mentor.
"Hardly ever see him. It's the Carrows you have to watch out for."
"The Carrows?"
"Brother and sister. They're in charge of discipline. They like punishment, the Carrows," he says, pointing to the newest gash on his face.
"They did that to you? But why?" Hermione asks.
"Today's Dark Arts lesson had us practicing the Cruciatus Curse, on First Years. I refused. Hogwarts has changed."
You're amazed by the change in Neville, no longer seeing a scared boy but rather a confident man, no longer afraid to stand up for himself or the people around him. It's a bittersweet reverence you feel, conflicted by his words, knowing that this new regime must have forced him to change. You wondered about everyone else, how had they fared?
Just as you approach the end of the tunnel, a large door appears, blocking any further light. Neville turns to you all with a grin on his face, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "Let's have a bit of fun, shall we?" He turns back to reach for the door and slowly begins pushing it open, moving forward to block you all with his body.
"Hey! Listen up, you lot! Brought you a surprise," he calls out, addressing what you assume to be other students.
"Not more of Aberforth's cooking, I hope. Be a surprise if we could digest it," you hear a voice call back, a voice you instantly recognise as Seamus.
Without replying, Neville steps to one side and reveals you all stood behind him, Harry first with Ron, then you and then Hermione in near single file within the small entrance to the tunnel.
"Blimey!" Seamus calls out, his face amongst a sea of others who all turn to the opening at Seamus' exclamation. The crowd erupts with cheers and hollars, your names called out as people begin to stand, clapping and smiling up at you all. You recognise many of the faces there, Luna, Cho, Dean, Lavender, Cormac, Padma and Parvati, Nigel and more. You look around hopefully to try and spot Ginny but you can't see her familiar face nor the familiar red hair you're so hopeful to see.
You descend down the ladder and are immediately met with a surge of hugs, backslaps and handshakes as the group of your fellow students embrace you, greeting each of you with an excitement you'd not anticipated.
"Get the word out to Remus and the others that Harry and the gang are back," Neville says quietly to Nigel, making you freeze in Padma's arms. You naturally assumed 'the others' meant Order members, would they all be joining you? Would you finally get to see Fred and George again? And if you did, would they even want to see you?
You faked a smile as more people greeted you but you felt as if you were on autopilot, your mind spiralling at the idea of seeing your loved one's again and their reaction. You tried to focus of Bill's words from before, his tone was positive and present tense, hopefully they did still want you. You watched from over the shoulder of a student you didn't recognise to see Nigel scrambling to work an old battered wizard wireless, navigating through the crackles of it warming up, speaking quickly and fighting to keep the large headphones on.
"River, DA calling. Do you read? We have a new weather report: Lightning has struck. I repeat, lightning has struck."
"Okay, okay! Stand down! Let's not kill them before You-Know-Who gets the chance!" Neville says, trying to calm the group who have taken to mainly swarming Harry. The sea of people parts and Ron, stood beside Harry, takes your hand, pulling you in towards him as he does the same to Hermione, keeping you all close together.
"Right then. What's the plan, Harry?" Neville says, crossing his arms as he looks expectantly at Harry.
Harry gazes out over the expectant faces in the room, noting the hollow eyes and broken bodies and the desperate, almost palpable desire for hope amongst the crowd. For a moment he seems lost, remaining mute as he is awed by the sacrifice his friends have made.
"Okay. There's something we need to find, something hidden here in the castle. It could help us defeat You-Know-Who," he says determinedly, though if not a little lost. You share a look with Hermione that looks hesitant and concerned, both of you worried to give the game away.
"What is it?" Neville asks.
"We don't know," Harry replies.
"Where is it?" Dean asks, still looking hopeful.
"Don't know that either."
There's a brief pause that lingers with awkwardness, the sea of hopeful faces falling a little as the anticlimactic information is relayed.
"I realize it's not much to go on," Harry says.
"That's nothing to go on," Seamus says a little defensively, rendering Harry speechless for the moment, faltering under the unexpected backlash.
You spot the Ravenclaw banner in the distance and place your hand on Harry's shoulder, stepping in for him as it seems that he's a little lost for words, trying to navigate what exactly he could and should tell them.
"We think it's something to do with Ravenclaw," you say, side stepping to move in line with Harry at the front. "The thing we're looking for, it would be small, easy to conceal. It'd most likely be valuable and sentimental to Ravenclaw herself," you say, looking around at the sea of people who have turned their attention to you. You fixate on the eagle symbol on the banner, trying to look at the Ravenclaw students in the room, knowing they would be the most likely to have some information.
Your words are met with near silence and lost faces, confusion upon some as they look around at each other clueless.
"Well, there's Rowena Ravenclaw's lost diadem," Luna says from near the back.
"Oh, bloody hell. Here we go," Ron mutters under his breath behind you and you deliver a swift concealed kick to his shin to shut him up.
"The lost diadem of Ravenclaw? Hasn't anyone ever heard of it? It's quite famous," Luna says looking around as people turn in her direction, not taking her seriously.
"Yes, but Luna, it's lost. For centuries now. There's not a person alive today who's seen it," Cho says delicately, not wanting to humiliate Luna in front of the crowd. The other Ravenclaw's nod in agreement.
"Excuse me. But would someone tell me what a bloody diadem is?" Ron says, stepping to the other side of you so he doesn't get kicked again.
"It's a kind of crown. You know, like a tiara," Cho says.
You look towards Hermione and raise your eyebrows, seeing the same understanding in her eyes. It was possible, more than possible.
Just then, there's a distinctive rumble of the door opening and you freeze for a moment before you spot Ginny walking quickly over to the assembled group. She freezes for a moment, staring at Harry before mumbling his name with a smile. Ron gives a wave and says hi, though she pays no notice, still intensely staring at Harry who is staring back just the same.
"Six months she hasn't seen me and it's like I'm Frankie First Year. I mean, I'm only her brother," Ron mumbles between you and Hermione and you can't help but smile at his childish grumbling.
"Got loads of those, though, doesn't she? There's only one Harry," Seamus says, turning to you with a smile and a little wiggle of his eyebrows, making your heart flutter and your stomach tie into knots, having momentarily forgotten about the impending reunion with your boyfriends.
"Shut up, Seamus," Ron says without any real conviction, only to be interrupted by Neville who turns to Ginny with a frown.
"What is it, Ginny?"
"Snape knows. He knows that Harry was spotted in Hogsmeade," she says, still frozen to the spot, looking alarmed. Her gaze breaks away only briefly as she looks to you, then Ron, then Hermione. She eventually runs forward and embraces Harry, then pulls you in, then Ron and then Hermione.
"We need to do something," Harry says, turning to your group.
"How long until the order gets here?" You hear Ron ask Neville, trying to make a plan, knowing it would be foolish to act before the order had assembled.
"Anytime now, they've all been called to arms," he replies, looking back towards you as you nod. Trying to ignore the knot in your stomach and the lump in your throat, you turn to Harry, his gazed fixed to the floor, seemingly trying to think of options.
"Harry we need to overthrow Snape," Hermione says, a dangerous look in her eye.
"But we have to catch him off guard," you say, agreeing with Hermione. "We have to wait for the Order to arrive, if it turns into a fight we need backup. Neville how many of the teachers are on his side?"
"Just the Carrow's I'd say, most others have either been threatened, left or stayed to protect the students," Neville says, moving to stand closer to you all, the intel for the plan.
"We surprise Snape, overthrow and outnumber them, then we search the castle whilst the Order sets up defences," you say, looking directly at Harry so that he'd listen to your reasoning, "once we start this, there's no turning back."
He nods almost immediately, his gaze turning to you as he works through the plan in his head.
"That could work," Ron says encouragingly, moving closer to place a hand on Harry's shoulder.
Suddenly a loud alarm rings out, a whirring sound reminiscent of an old war time air raid alarm. You flinch, as does your little group though the other students seem completely unfazed, each of them dispersing to grab their discarded school robes.
"What's happening?" Harry asks, looking around frantically.
"Snape's called an assembly," Ginny explains, quickly placing her outer robes around her. "We have 10 minutes to get to the Great Hall."
"Harry, what are you doing?" Hermione exclaims as Harry reaches for a robe, quickly placing the cloak around him. So much for your plan.
"You wait here for the Order, I'll sneak in with the crowd, he won't be expecting that," he says, fingers struggling with the ties of the cloak in his haste.
"Hermione it might be the best way," you say carefully, expecting the disbelieving look she gives you. "Snape doesn't know Harry's already in the castle, right Gin?" You ask, turning to Ginny.
"No, the castle would be locked down if he did," Ginny says, agreeing with you.
"I have some Polyjuice potion," you begin to say but Harry stops you.
"No, it has to be me," Harry says, and you nod in understanding, letting him go.
The students pour out, including Harry who is concealed between Ginny and another Gryffindor student you don't recognise, leaving you, Ron and Hermione alone to await the Order's arrival.
The sound of the students marching in formation is an ominous noise, the steady beat of the synchronised footsteps only illuminating the quickened pace of your pounding heart. You took a seat on one of the crates in the back corner of the room, your back to both walls, staring into your lap and wringing your hands as nerves overtake you. The Order, most importantly Fred and George, would be here any minute and you didn't even know where to begin with greeting them.
Would they still want you?
Would they be harsh and dismissive?
Were they mad at you for leaving?
Your stomach flipped with nerves and you tried to hold back the nauseous feeling that kept rising up, your entire being riddled with anxiety. The others seemed to sense your internal distress and left you alone, standing together and talking quietly in the other corner. You pulled out the lebetum from your pocket to keep you occupied and distracted, looking into the frosted glass as you tried thinking of happy memories to see the words form but you were too anxious and conflicted to get a clear thought in your mind, the words remaining hidden. You still weren't certain what the exact use for it was, though it had helped you to retrieve the sword of Gryffindor. Why was the doe significant? You were pretty sure that Dumbledore's patronus was a Phoenix, so surely it couldn't be Albus helping you beyond the grave. The only clue you had was Dobby's cryptic message delivered just before he died, 'my boss was right'. But Dobby was a free elf, Harry had ensured that after the chamber of secrets, planting the sock which freed him from the Malfoys.
Just as you huffed out a breath of disappointment and placed the lebetum back deep into your pocket, a deep rumbling noise broke through the quiet room, alerting you to an intruder. Holding out your wand you waited a few seconds for the figure to appear, visibly shrinking in relief when you noticed Kingsley's signature blue robes coming into view. He was followed close behind by Remus and then Neville. Arthur and Molly stepped in and then Bill and Fleur. It was like you were being tortured on purpose, having to wait and sift through the familiar members until you finally saw the two near identical beings you'd longer for all this time.
They all naturally congregated around Hermione and Ron, greeting them with warmth having seen them first as they entered, your position partially hidden in the back corner. Almost immediately, you see George and Fred looking around worriedly as you aren't with Ron and Hermione. George catches your eye line first and you immediately stood up on shaking legs, feeling breathless and frozen in place, unable to take even a single step out of overwhelming fear that you'd be rejected after all this time.
His face erupts with sheer relief as he nudges Fred hard with his elbow, alerting his twin to your presence. Both twins turned to face you and within one second of turning, they run off from the group and bolt over to you, each pulling at your frozen form as tears erupt, free flowing down your face. George takes hold of you first, muttering unintelligible words as he cradles you tightly. The movement hurts your tender shoulder but you couldn't care less whilst you sob into his chest in relief. Fred speaks too but you can't make it out, both of their voices mixing to form a symphony of background noise. Fred then pulls you into his arms and spins you around, holding all of your weight as you sob and laugh at the same time. He puts you down on the floor and kisses you hard, hands tangling in your hair, no part of you left untouched as George grabs hold of your spare hand, feeling you firmly between them.
"I'm so sorry."
"I'm so sorry baby, I never meant-."
"You're really here."
"I love you."
"I love you."
"Missed you so bloody much."
You all speak at the same time, still clutching onto each other desperately as if one of you would disappear at any moment. George stops speaking and pulls you into a kiss, all his emotions pouring into the kiss, his remorse and regret, longing and desperation from the last months all culminating within him.
"I'm so sorry, I never meant to push you away, I took it out on you and I will never forgive myself," George says with a hiccup, still holding you as he pulls away from the kiss, speaking quickly so that he can be the first one to talk. Your tears have slowed now and from what you can see, both of the twins have their own tear lines too.
"No I'm sorry, I never wanted to leave you, especially not after everything that happened."
"We understand sweetheart," Fred says, stepping back in after giving you and George a moment. He places his hands onto your waist and you stand between both men, exactly where you should always be.
You hear a cough from the corner of the room and turn to see Remus with his hand in front of his mouth, looking sheepish and a little embarrassed having to break up your reunion. You understand, knowing that business needed taking care of first. You walk back to the group and are greeted warmly by Molly who pulls you into a bone crushing hug, followed by Arthur. Fleur then pulls you in and Bill strides over to you, placing his arm much more gently around you, knowing the problem with your shoulder.
"Told you," he whispers in your ear and you smile, gently elbowing him playfully which makes him laugh, your boyfriends paying close attention to your interaction.
"So where do we begin?" Hermione asks, looking towards Kingsley for leadership. He explains his plan but stops when he realises he doesn't quite know why you've returned.
"We need time," you say, standing straight. "We have to search the castle for something and destroy it."
"Then time you'll have," Kingsley says with a nod, ushering you all forward as you walk in formation towards the great hall where Harry would be revealing himself. You're flanked by your boyfriends, neither of them letting you out of their sight nor more than an arms length away as you walk between them.
Kingsley and Remus cast matching stunning spells as soon as you all round the corner to the hall, taking out the two deatheaters who were guarding the entrance to the hall.
You wait in tense silence, trying to listen in to what you believe to be Snape's threatening monologue until you hear a chorus of gasps, alerting you that Harry had made his move. It was time to act.

controversial opinions on characters? (specifically harry potter)
hi anon! thanks for the ask :)
hmmmm i have quite a few
i don't like luna lovegood. i think she's very irritating as a person and i would absolutely go batshit if i had to interact with her in real life. she is the wizard equivalent of a flat earther and an anti vaxxer, not a spiritual guide. hermione wasn't narrow minded for doubting her and xeno, they were the narrow minded ones for never questioning their beliefs despite the MOUNTAINS of evidence against them. rahhh she makes me so angry. (i hate that i have to specify, but this isn't misogynistic, i would feel the same if she was a guy.)
lucius malfoy is a relatively harmless guy, he's just slippery. he gives me such peacock vibes. he just wants to show off and look rich and not be questioned. (also he def dotes on narcissa and draco which is adorable to explore in fics <3 i think he would be an amazing father to a little girl and would have loved a daughter which i like exploring in my fics, but that's just a headcanon)
draco is the same way, i feel. iirc he's usually too scared to start shit unless crabbe and goyle are there, he just makes me laugh tbh. of course he does do and say some shitty things but i am just. unable to take him seriously. this may be because i haven't thought about his character in a while, but as of right now, i don't really see him as evil OR a sympathetic little boy. he's just. a little dude. (he is more dangerous than his father though, i'll give him that.) i mean if marauders stans are allowed to glorify james potter and put him on a pedestal, i'm allowed to have this.
percy weasley! i love percy so much, i think this is an uncommon opinion but i don't really know. i think he's amazing, i've already talked about him a lot on my blog so ye :)
i think the weasley family is dysfunctional asf. i don't think i personally can explain it, but this post by @/arkadijxpancakes does a great job of comprehensively analyzing their history and dynamics as well as showing why each weasley is the way they are. super good read!
albus dumbledore: i don't know why this is controversial but i actually think he was a good character, all things considered. yes, he did some bad things, but they were to help save the wizarding world in the end. he set it all up.
severus snape: i think he's awesome, deserved WAY better, and was a traumatized character who is severely overhated. please don't try to fight me on this, you'll just give me a headache.
lily evans: this is a very new opinion of mine but... i don't think she was a great person. i used to wonder 'how could james potter, a shitty little twit twat, end up with such a wonderful and kind and amazing person?' but i've come to realize, she's really not those things. she was kind of a bad friend from what we know. i still think she's very interesting, but not necessarily a good person.
harry potter!! i want to include him because i think that quite frankly he is an awesome little dude but is super underrated and borderline disliked by a big part of the fandom. though i personally feel like he could have been written better in some ways, i still love him tons and i think he deserves more appreciation <33 (also i adore the idea of an oddly specific au where percy and oliver team up to take care of lil tiny first year harry)
neville longbottom: this may be the most controversial one yet but i just don't feel the hype. i feel like he was largely unimportant in the first six books besides as a side character (but it's been a while since i read most of them, so correct me if i'm wrong) and yeah he was cool in the seventh, but like... i still don't feel it. he was pretty boring imo. i think i logically understand why he's loved, but i don't personally relate :/
(canon) james potter: hate him. -100000000/10. he can go die. (OH WAIT HE ALREADY DID!) i'm sorry, i just cannot like him. fanon james is awesome and super cute and lovable, but fanon james is a whole different person than canon james. if we compare young severus to harry, james is dudley dursley in literally every way. rich, privileged, gets away with everything, and loves picking on powerless and vulnerable people for fun. the only difference is that james potter tended to do it with a partner/group, and dudley could do it on his own. oh, and dudley apologized, i guess. it was pretty half assed but we did see him trying to be better with the teacup and stuff. they both suck, obviously, but at least dudley had a slight turning point. maybe i just don't like james because we never saw him be apologetic or regret anything in canon? idk.
cho chang: i honestly really liked her! i thought she and harry could have been super cute ever since i read the third book. now obviously valentines day of 1996 was a disaster, but i still think that if she and harry had met up again after the war and after they had figured themselves out, they could have sort of talked and apologized and moved on and possibly rekindled. idk, this isn't really as ~controversial~ as some of the others because i feel like cho chang is just more forgotten than unpopular or controversial, but i don't see a lot of charry content out there so i'm putting this here :]
one last thing i almost forgot, VIKTOR KRUM IS A FUCKING CREEP!! i used to be more hesitant about voicing this opinion because he's so loved in the fandom, but GOD DAMN he's a creep. as a famous, rich, popular adult, he asks out a 15 year old and is super nice to her and appreciates her intellect and is generally very sweet to her, but that just. that literally just sounds like grooming to me?? wtf?? i mean if i was asked out at 15 by an 18 year old, i would be VERY creeped out. also he comments on how attractive ginny (15 at the time) is at bill's wedding when HE IS IN HIS 20s. he then makes a comment along the lines of 'what's the point of being famous if all the good looking girls are taken?' HEY HERE'S AN IDEA, FIND A WOMAN INSTEAD OF A GIRL??
there's gotta be more controversial opinions i have but no one else comes to mind right now; feel free to request opinions on specific characters! i have a lot of those :]

I've seen the same post a hundred times now. Sometimes it's a few days old, sometimes it's from years ago, but it's always the same. Some anti posts about how they don't understand how anyone can like Snape because he was so awful, and then there's a long reply that goes something like, "imagine this happens to you, and then this, and then this" to describe Snape's experience. Sometimes there's some James Potter hate thrown in.
Look. You can go through describing a character's entire experience but you don't really need to. Here's the thing that antis don't understand:
For all her faults (and they're big, bigoted ones) Rowling understood a really integral part of the human experience and conveyed it through Snape. Everyone needs love and to feel accepted. It's that simple. Snape became a Death Eater to seek acceptance (Rowling has confirmed this, though I can't remember the source - whoever wants to add it please do), because it was the only way he could find any.
Snape's understanding of morality, like everyone's, is subjective. Some readers understand this and some don't. When faced against a morality that says there is good and bad in the world, everyone makes choices based on their personal experience. Context is everything. Someone who experiences pain and suffering will not see the person inflicting it on them as moral. That's it. 'How can this person be good when they caused me so much suffering?' = human psychology. Most of the people who think 'I'm a bad person and deserve this' have been gaslit and abused into thinking so, because it's not a natural reaction - it's one that has to often be socialized into someone at a young age, exactly because it's not natural. Everyone is the hero of their own story; no one sees themselves as a villain, because they see the valid aspects of their own perspective.
You can write essays on how vulnerable people needing acceptance is what cults and fascists exploit to recruit vulnerable people, or on how the standard anti's un-nuanced reading of Snape both ignores canon and displays a disturbing lack of empathy or compassion, but at its core it just boils down to context. From Snape's perspective he experienced cruelty, therefore the people inflicting it must be cruel. Again, it's that simple. He was a person, like any other, except he was fictional so he wasn't even real. On the flip side is James Potter, who, for all his faults, didn't get to live long enough to get a chance to change and grow unlike Snape, and I think the Snapedom also needs to acknowledge that.
They're fictional characters representing things an author wants to say, not sports teams, not martyrs, and not all good or all bad emblems that define your identity depending on how you feel about them. It's depressing how much time is wasted arguing with bullies and trolls whether from the Marauders fandom or just random antis. I literally can't find more than three blogs to follow without this argument coming across my feed daily. I know the Snapedom is Not OK™ and that's kind why we're all here, and I know that my take is super unpopular but like Snape, I don't care what others think: this fandom has been having the exact same argument for years and nothing has changed. What are your thoughts on Lily? I think she recieves too much hate. I get that she’s a flawed character but the way people are discussing her is like she’s a complete bitch and has been thhrougout her friendship with Sev, which I don’t agree on.
Thank you for asking this question. I had written a long meta about the relationship and friendship between Severus and Lily, but it became so lengthy that I wasn’t sure how to post it. Now, I've separated the parts that focus more on Lily’s character and written them here.(Yes, it's still long but it's shareable now)
I enjoy Snily fanfics and absolutely love Lily’s characterization in them, but I have different feelings about canon Lily. I’m not anti-Lily, but I don't think she holds any significant moral superiority or special virtues compared to other characters in the books.
Most of what we know about Lily comes from when she was 15. Yes, it’s admirable that she sacrificed her life at 21 to save her child, but that doesn’t necessarily say much about her character. Many mothers of any age and from any part of the world would do the same for their children. We don’t know how much she matured or grew as a person. We don’t know if she was satisfied with the choices she made as a teenager or what her feelings toward Severus were in her final days. That’s why I base my judgments on 15-year-old Lily.
I see her as a warm, charming, and somewhat immature girl who, coincidentally, really enjoys positive attention (though not to the extent that James does). She tries to be kind to everyone to be liked, yet feels that other girls don’t really like her and are envious. Unlike her son, she doesn’t have a complex moral code, she tends to see the world in black and white like her sister Petunia. To her, you’re either on her side and therefore her friend, or you’re against her and her enemy. She’s the type of person who can easily attract people at first glance but struggles to form deeper, more meaningful connections with them.
I think part of the reason people dislike her is that they see her as more than what she is and have high expectations of her. Fanon often portrays Lily as a girl from a high-status, wealthy family, a feminist, strong, and independent woman, which makes people expect her to have been able to solve many of the issues she faced. However, in canon, she clearly doesn’t have any of these traits. We don’t even know if her family was rich or poor, but since she lived near Snape, it doesn’t seem like there was much of a class difference between their families.
Yes, canon Lily is lively, smart, and kind, and she gets good grades, but that’s different from being ambitious, powerful, or having feminist or progressive views.
Lily marries and has a child immediately after finishing school, before she truly reaches intellectual and emotional maturity. In canon, we don’t see her play a significant role in the war, undertake any special missions for the Order, or even hold a notable job or career before having Harry. She fits more into the traditional role of a wife and homemaker. I think if she had survived and the war ended, she would have lived a life very similar to Molly Weasley (though not with as many children). She’d be a loving wife and warm mother. Of course, she would likely spoil her child more than Molly does, letting him off the hook easily. Like Petunia, she would overlook her child’s mistakes unless it involved dark magic.
I understand that most people in the wizarding world marry young, but we have characters like Minerva McGonagall, who remains independent, even refusing to change her surname after marriage. In Fantastic Beasts, we see women who, despite the war, maintain their roles as strong, independent individuals whose identities aren’t solely tied to being someone’s wife or mother. So, Lily isn’t an exceptional character in this regard. She’s more like the average woman of her time. When we view her as a very average woman, rather than the amazing, powerful, modern figure seen in fanfics, her behavior becomes much easier to understand.
As for her marriage, I can imagine what was going through her mind: everything with James Potter was easier, simpler, and more stable because, from birth, everything was handed to him. He doesn’t need to work hard for happiness or a future, as his high social status and vast family wealth are guaranteed. He probably promised Lily a successful marriage and a sweet and happy family, perhaps even on their first date, filling her with hope for what was to come. It’s only natural that a teenage girl like Lily, who sees the world in black and white and has a fragile social standing in the wizarding world, would quickly decide that marrying someone like James Potter — who is at the pinnacle of her moral scale ( he doesn’t use dark magic) — was the best choice for her future. This pattern of marriage reminds me of Petunia. She marries her boss, who is also much older than her because he can give her the stable, normal life she dreams of, with a secure income.
Sometimes I think the way Lily chose James and how Snape chose Voldemort are similar. Both were teenagers who made these decisions to secure their place in the wizarding world and cover their insecurities. Lily is fortunate to have an easier life than Severus, and as a woman, she can rely on the support of a wealthy and pure blood man. Snape, on the other hand, didn’t have Lily’s privileges. He had to work hard to secure his place, offering his life and loyalty to Voldemort, who promises him acceptance, security, and protection in return.
I also disagree with the idea that Lily is responsible for all of Snape’s problems or that if she had stayed friends with Severus, he wouldn’t have joined Voldemort:
Snape’s life was far more complicated and difficult for Lily’s presence to magically fix everything. Rowling says Snape sought acceptance, security, and peace. Clearly, Lily couldn’t provide those things for him (after all, she was just 15). Snape needed a strong, father-figure type of support at that age. Teenage Snape, contrary to those who want to portray him as obsessed with Lily, had a proud and independent personality. He didn’t base his entire life around Lily’s presence or absence. Yes, he apologized for his mistake, but when Lily threatened to leave him, he didn’t make any effort to change his circumstances. That’s why I don’t believe the people who say Snape only switched sides because of an obsession with Lily. His love for her lit the path for him later in life, but it was Snape who gave that love the power to guide him and help him grow.

HP canon debater & fanfics writer
I am in my 30s, genderfluid - she/they - Scandinavian, but live in the UK, and I am a long COVIDer/CFS/ME and lifelong PoTSer!
On this blog, I am (mostly) a canon-compliant Marauder fanfic writer - who likes to discuss the canon. I mostly ship canon (especially JILY!!!, Hinny, Romione, Tedromeda, Remadora) because I am boring, but I adore Prongsfoot and Sebinis, and I’m not anti most non-canon ships if they are true to their canon characterisation.
I will argue and discuss canon with anyone who's interested. If you don't care about canon, fine, but you and I probably won't enjoy each other's posts very much.
I don’t support JKR’s views (Read: I AM EXTREMELY ANTI HER VIEWS). I regularly question whether I should just abandon the fandom because of her (I have stayed away in the past), but then again, I have a strong emotional attachment to these fictional characters.
My fanfictions:
When we were up to no good - long fic that aims to be a canon compliant interpretation of the marauders - obsessively so, if I might add.
Never saw one without the other: a collection of one shots obsessing over Sirius and James' relationship
First betrayal - first ever fanfic - Jily (borderline Jilypads). Set during the first war as Lily discovers she's pregnant
Jily microfics
My @sorenphelps The Bodyguard AU inspired stories can be found here (but check out the whole AU!!!)
Wolfstar stories: A Close Second (Wolfstar raising Harry) and It doesn't matter (a wolfstar and Jily Christmas story)
A bit of anti-werewolf legislation - my Dolores Umbridge fanfic (yeah, I write weird shit!)
When we were up to no good
This long fic consists of 4 parts, and was me very much wanting more fics that are consistent with canon as per this post.
Part 1: I solemnly swear - COMPLETE
Quote: 'No friendship is an accident'
We meet our cast of heroes age 11 and follow them as they become the dear friends we know them to be. James and Snape become sworn enemies. This part ends shortly after the big discovery.
Part 2: Messrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs.
Quote: 'The best memories come from bad ideas with best friends'
The boys really become that tight-knit group we like to call the marauders: they set out to become animagi; Sirius and James become the popular, bullying gits we see in the Pensieve; the Whomping Willow incident happens and this part ends shortly after Snape's worst memory.
Part 3: Mischief Managed.
Quote: 'They say I changed a lot. I say a lot changed me'
The war has always been in the background (quite present actually), but it's at this point our story takes a really dark turn. The Marauders face their last two years of Hogwarts, James does some serious growing up, becomes Head Boy - and of course, starts dating Lily Evans. This ends with our heroes graduating Hogwarts.
Part 4: Until the very end.
Quote: ' Let us live, since we must die'
One Order, a wedding, two childbirths, one prophecy, lots and lots of death, and one big, heart-breaking betrayal.

you're argument is so fucking stupid because a) nobody who understands the characters and ships jily is pro-snape. Snape is as disgusting as regulus and actual intelligent people know that and b) the marauders fandom is not by nature anti-canon or whatever the fuck you said. it is derived from canon and has been thriving since PoA came out. and no, not everyone ships wolfstar and in fact tonnes of people don't because it's NOT CANON. and the new fans who clearly haven't even read the books and dont understand the characters at all are shitting all over remus and sirius routinely with atrocious, disgusting characterisations like the one in atyd.
you new fans are ruining the fandom by turning beloved characters (the ACTUAL marauders and Lily - not the fascists you freaks simp for) into pathetic OCs.
if you don't like this canon get the fuck out of this fandom and find a different one to ruin. james potter would never date a blood supremacist and youre a fucking idiot for acting like he would
Okay so first things first , if your gonna be such a horrible person be brave enough to say it with your chest 😂😂 posting its as anonymous is embarrassing and shows that you have no dignity😂😂 at least I spoke my opinions without shame😘😘
Two, you are proving my point of people taking it too serious 😂😂
Three, I have read the books, multiple times as have most of the fandom, and I have said before that I believe that not reading the books and then hoping into the fandom is weird, so let’s not be ignorant, if ur gonna come for me do your research babygirl😘😘
Four, I said in my post that people hating on other people’s head canons is messed up, thank you for proving my point once again love 😘😘😘
Five, there is no such thing as ruining the fandom which again I said in my og post once again do your research 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾
Six, you are also furthering my point by hating on characterization 🫶🏾😍
Seven, the new fans are evolving the fandom, which i said, in my previous post (starting to wonder if your reading comprehension is up to par🧐)
Eight, I’m not gonna argue abt hcs w a person who has such strong hateful opinions. Invest in therapy💋
And lastly don’t play with me, calling me a “fucking idiot” just shows your lack of vocabulary and your ignorance so if you want to have a civilized conversation my inbox is always open if you want to try again.
Have a good day🫶🏾🫶🏾
#try again#girl bye#it’s never that serious#marauders era#the marauders#mauraders#jegulus#james potter#regulus black

Could James have fought well against Voldemort/bought enough time for Lily & Harry, if he did have his wand?
So, I haven't read the books in a while and canon is a bit muddled in my head but I think it's possible. James had already evaded Voldemort thrice, so it's likely that he had a good idea of what to expect. We know he was good at transfiguration, so he'd have been able to animate the furniture/change its shape to attack and defend, which in cramped quarters would probably have been a significant distraction on top of whatever spells he could have managed.
If there were anti-disapparation wards, then Lily would have needed to sneak out of the house another way, either with a broom (I don't know that we know, canonically, how good she was at flying), by floo, or by an alternate path out of the cottage. Maybe there was a back stair she could have taken? Sirius floos Harry from Grimmauld (proving you can floo from a fidelius protected location) so if there was a floo connection, then maybe she could have gotten out that way, so long as she could reach the floo. Unfortunately if that's on the ground floor, then James has to get Voldy away from it. A broom might help her get away, but did they keep a broom upstairs for that purpose?
I think James could have bought them some time. I don't know if he could have bought them enough, depending on what Lily had to do to get out of the house and away. Maybe if James had kept Voldy occupied long enough help would have arrived? Sirius, Snape, Wormtail, and Hagrid all showed up rather soon after the event. Snape might have stepped in after James was dead to help save Lily if he realized Voldy was about to kill her. Sirius would have jumped in without hesitation or used the enchanted motorbike to help evacuate Lily and Harry from the second floor (or both, giving Lily control of the bike then leaping in to fight with James). Hagrid might not have been able to do much himself, but he'd certainly have tried. On the other hand, would Snape and Wormtail have stepped in if they saw Lily fleeing with Harry to stop her?
It's an interesting thought.

Ranking game anon: Sirius wins again! Love that for him, think I might just have him for every gane to see what happens 😀
This time I'm gonna ask you to rank from worst to best who would do a better job as Headmaster/Headmistress of Hogwarts
Hermione Granger
Molly Weasley
Sirius Black
Severus Snape (I know he was technically the headmaster in canon but I don't think he was really trying his best there so imagine he puts in a bit more effort this time)
Luna Lovegood
Luna Lovegood: Listen. I love Luna. I really do. But you just know if she were in charge of Hogwarts she'd change the curriculum to have them all start learning insane conspiracy theories instead of actual facts. Like the Hogwarts curriculum isn't great but she'd make it so much worse. It'd be really funny though.
Sirius Black: The Gryffindors have done nothing wrong in their lives ever and if they did then that was their emotional support bullying and probably that Slytherin deserved it. He projects liek crazy so if you remind him of someone he liked then congratulations - you can do no wrong. Otherwise? Well. At best he doesn't care or finds you boring. At worst, you're in for some rough years. If you break the rules creatively enough he will give you extra points and get you out of detention. He is actually pretty good at hiring competent teachers though so at least the students learn.
Severus Snape: Is he nice? Not really. Is he biased? Yeah kinda. Does he set a reasonable curriculum and also have anti bullying policies? Also yes actually. I mean. Sure he's unlikely to believe that a Slytherin started a fight (even when they totally did) but at least in principle he thinks that fighting shouldn't be allowed. He also sets a good curriculum.
Molly Weasley: She knows how to manage children, does not project her childhood traumas on them and has a reasonable understanding of what it takes to set a good curriculum. So already she's beating most of the competition. Plus, she invents new recipes and sends them to the kitchens when she thinks everyone deserves a special treat.
Hermione Granger: Her time in the muggle world exposed her to modern thinking on schooling and curriculums leading her to implement some badly needed reforms. She also requires everyone to take muggle studies unless they can place out which over time vastly reduces the number of times the Statute of Secrecy gets violated because some wizard has no idea how to blend in and also reduces anti-muggle extremism. She also implements common sense rules like 'no detentions in the forbidden forest' and 'no classes with creatures that can kill young students.' She is also, and I cannot stress enough how important this is, AGAINST SLAVERY.
