ok listen, i have had to give this pep talk one too many gd times lately, so i am just doing it here in the hopes that this will settle it.

you must operate on the principle that you are fantastic until presented with reasonable, rational evidence otherwise.

i am so completely serious about this. you must, for your own sake, decide to believe that you are funny, you are smart, you are talented, you are attractive, you are liked by everyone, and you're going to get what you want.

"oh no!!!' i hear you saying, "but *I* am TERRIBLE, i am THE WORST, and to assume otherwise would be SO PRESUMPTUOUS and also WRONG"

fuck that. there is absolutely no reason at all that believing you are terrible/ugly/unworthy of love should be the mental default. none. NONE. there's really no reason that "neutral/i'm fine i guess" should be the default either. because the default is what you have to live with inside your own head until you are given evidence from the external world that either supports or contradicts that default. so WHY on g-d's green earth would you want to spend that time inside your own head miserable???

no. no, my friends. you are fantastic. we are all fantastic. until presented with evidence otherwise.

"okay," you say, "but now i have been given a piece of evidence that contradicts the premise that i am fantastic. shall i put on the sackcloth and ashes now??"

no! now you must examine the evidence! and you must do this objectively (hard, i know, but necessary).

for example: someone has had An Emotion because of something you said. consider! is this a person you know and trust? do they have a history of being honest and reasonable? do you, in your rational and objective consideration (real serious about this part, too) think that maybe what you said could be construed in kind of a shitty way?

once you have reached your conclusion (your honest and objective one, remember, this is not just "i am fantastic, therefore everything i say/do ever is fantastic," that is not how this works), take appropriate action. apologize and/or explain as necessary, take any restorative action that needs to be taken, and return to your default. which is, remember, that you are fantastic.

our fucked up capitalistic society has a vested monetary and authoritarian interest in all of us being so caught up in our own suffering that we cannot act for our own and each other's benefit. people who are convinced that they do not deserve to be treated well, or to be happy, or to be respected, will not advocate for themselves in any sphere, let alone take risks on behalf of the wider community. they will buy into failing and harmful systems in a desperate bid to buy, beg, or steal their way to some mediocre simulacrum of joy.

you are better than that. don't do the rich fascist assholes' work for them.

decide that you are fantastic, and you deserve to be happy. because it's true. for all of us.

i'm getting towards the end of the skypeia arc, & i'd like to say just how much i adore the way the female strawhats have been treated.

just... every aspect of how the way their characters have been previously contextualized influences the story-line is treated with a masterful amount of consideration. we're given so many layers to both of them that enrich not only their characters specifically, but the arc, and the one piece world as a whole. without nami & robin having their specific skills, and their specific values, without those being built upon, the story would have come to a halt.

you could not have skypeia without nami & robin being who they are as individuals. not just because they never would've gotten there without nami, but also because the way these women think is itself foundational to the machinations of the arc as a whole.

to be totally upfront, if you think any other strawhats were more central to the skypeia arc than nami & robin were you are full-on fucking lying to yourself.

like... i remember seeing a guy posting on reddit like "hey, im enjoying dark souls a lot rn but i have kids and a job and dont have as much time to learn it as id like and i'm stuck at this part, does anyone know any ways to cheat or make my characters stronger so I can finish the game" and a bunch of gamer dudes just replied with a bunch of inspirational quotes about learning from defeat and never giving up but its like... dudes... the guy already got the gist of the game... he understands the philosophy he just doesnt have the time.... give him the fucking cheat so he can see the rest.... like damn!!! damn!!!

that guy is not gonna be like "oh dark souls is boring bcs its too easy i never die to anything" he knows already!!! he knows hes cheating!! its fine!!! he can still enjoy the world and the boss designs and stuff in a way.

Actually nah fuck that post. No hate to the person who wrote it, this shit *is* hard. But you WILL find people that love you. You will find people that love you in the secret third way and they will support you and they will make you feel whole. You will find your community both in fleeting connections and long lasting friendships. You will find love in so many places. Yes, the world is scary and cruel and unpredictable, and people won't always hold space for you, but there will always be people who will and there will always be people who will love you so much more than you ever thought anyone would, and they will love you on your terms.

And better yet - you can be that person for someone else. You can love your friends unapologetically, without expectation. You can support them and hold them close to your heart and tell them how much they Matter. you can do all of this for the people you love, including yourself. Being aromantic doesn't mean locking yourself away from intimacy and connection. You don't have to reluctantly accept romance to receive it. There is a place for you here - you just need to live long enough to find it.
