Macaque study # S4

So here we go for Macaque in season 4! There will be a lot to say this time too. Especially since season 4 offers us very interesting flashbacks about the brotherhood and how they interacted together!

We established that after season 3 Macaque did right most of his wrong by accepting MK's offer. I do think a verbal apology would be good, and that's probably why a lot of people feel like Macaque didn't redeem himself, but actions also spoke volumes. Macaque saved MK twice and his character arc is not over yet!

S4 ep2

In this episode we get our first flashback of the brotherhood. It's rather interesting to see how Macaque was in the past.

With the first frames of the flashback we already know that Macaque was rather reserved contrary to the other member of the brotherhood.

In those two very similar shots we see how Macaque is totally obscured by Yellow-Tusk bulky form as they burst out laughing. This tells us Macaque is a rather quiet individual who isn't as loud as the others and perhaps that he doesn't have a place yet within the brotherhood.

Macaque is also the only one who expresses his worry about the brotherhood plan. I think it's a great callback to his JTTW counterpart and his ability to hear the future, because we know that Macaque is right here. Macaque has always been a very cautious individual with a very good foresight, but he wasn't listened to. We see how Wukong prefers to goof around rather than listen to him.

I think it's also interesting to see how Macaque doesn't answer to Peng's quip about his cowardice.

He's angry about it, like we can see in this shot, but he's still in the background, obscured by Yellow-Tusk form, and he doesn't say a word back. This shows how Macaque wasn't a very confrontational individual. He didn't like to argue or fight. Maybe he didn't even want to bother himself because he knew changing Peng's mind wasn't possible.

In the same scene, Macaque is the only one who doesn't applaud or doesn't give any praises to Azure Lion when the others insist that Azure should be on the throne. But he also doesn't say anything or does not express any validation when Azure says Wukong should instead be on the throne.

Macaque is the only one here who doens't raise his glasses or burst out laughing.

I think it tells how Macaque doesn't believe in Azure ideals, but he also knows Wukong and doens't expressly thinks Wukong is a good choice for the throne.

In the end, the only one capable of changing Macaque mind and stopping him from worrying is Wukong.

Wukong : relax bud. When this is over we'll be back here basking in the sun and getting fat on fruits for the rest of, well, forever ! Like we always wanted.

Macaque : whatever you say, Wukong.

I think it's interesting how Macaque smile the moment Wukong says “like we always wanted”. Because that's probably what is the most important for Macaque, their shared dream. Not the brotherhood dream but the dream he shares with Wukong and only Wukong. Macaque is probably reassured by this, reassured that Wukong didn't lose sight of their shared desire and didn't let his quest of power blind him. Here Wukong shows that even though he let Azure feeds his ego, his dream is not the throne but a peaceful life with his bud.

And so Macaque abandons the subject, not because he's convinced that the brotherhood ideal is good, not because he believes in Azure's dream, but because he believes in Wukong. Macaque is in the brotherhood for Wukong, for this peaceful dream he shares with Wukong, he was never instered by anything other than Wukong and that's probably why he doens't even try to befriend the brotherhood.

But at the same time, Macaque is too quick to abandon the subject. He never put himself forward, maybe he's not even willing to oppose Wukong. He's putting himself in Wukong's shadows, perhaps even unconsciously.

The phrasing “Wathever you say, Wukong” does have the underlying meaning that Macaque would agree no matter what Wukong says, because he believes in Wukong more than anyone else in this world, he probably believes in Wukong more than he believe in himself.

I would like to point out that while LMK do takes a lot of liberties with JTTW, the Six-eared Macaque being a part of the brotherhood was actually a theory discussed before LMK even came out by Lam (2005). The Six-eared Macaque would be in fact the Macaque King seen in the beginning of the novel and one of Sun Wukong sworn brothers (In Anthony Yue traduction of JTTW the Macaque King is translated as “Monkey Queen” but that's just a matter of traduction, in the French version I've read the Macaque King is indeed male.)

S2 ep5

Macaque appears briefly in this episode, once again in a flashback taking place in the brotherhood era, presumably after the battle with the Jade Emperor and their inevitable loss.

Yellow-Tusk and Peng are discussing Wukong's betrayal and how he chose the other side, but we can see that Macaque is physically away from them, there is a distance between them that indicates a conflict of opinions. Macaque doesn't think like them.

Peng : You're characteristically quiet, Macaque

Macaque : I just think we should consider all our options before we-

And Peng cut him before he could end his sentence. Once again, Macaque is never listened to, his opinions are brushed aside (interesting to notice that Wukong wasn't the only one not listening to Macaque, everyone was constantly ignoring him despite his good foresight). Moreover, Peng confirms Macaque's quiet nature when they calls him “characteristically quiet.” But I do think it's interesting to see Macaque lingering with the brotherhood, he probably joined them only because of Wukong but still he's part of the group and does not abandon them once Wukong is captured, he still tries to talk and reason, even if it leads to nothing.

Macaque probably walked out of the brotherhood after this exchange. Fueled by DBK example who most likely left once he met PIF on the battlefield, Macaque decided that, since nobody listened to him, he would go search for Wukong himself.

The brotherhood was a toxic group where nobody truly listened to the others.

Yellow-Tusk, while wise at times, never stepped up until it was too late.

Peng only wanted to prove their strength and kept insulting Macaque (perhaps by fear of Macaque surpassing them or by frustration of Macaque potential being wasted in Wukong's shadow).

Azure was blinded by his admiration of Wukong and put him on a pedestal without considering his flaws. If Azure saw Wukong for who he truly was instead of his idolized version, he would have known Wukong wasn't meant for the throne.

Wukong joined only to feed his ego and got lost in his search for power.

Macaque never stood up for himself and quieted himself by fear of opposing Wukong.

All in all DBK was the healthiest out of all of them and that's probably why he walked out of this toxic group the moment he met someone who truly cared for him : PIF.

S4 ep 9

Macaque appears at the end of the episode and it's the first time in the whole season that we see him in the present, and not just him through a flashback.

MK is talking about Wukong to a lil monkey after his outburst, very much projecting onto him.

MK : Do you think Monkey King ever felt like this? Maybe that's why he stayed on this mountain, just having a good time with you guys. Cause you know he'd be out of the way where he couldn't hurt anyone he cared about.

Macaque : Or he was doing his usual Wukong thing being a lazy peach eating idiot, ignoring all the world's problems.

It's interesting to notice that Macaque appears throughout his shadow powers, MK's surroundings turn purple and Macaque figures slither in the darkness without really revealing himself. His voice also echoes all around the place, making him seem everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Something that gives him a very menacing feeling.

And once again, even if he's “redeemed” , Macaque 's spite towards Wukong didn't lessen and he does whatever he can to darken Wukong's image. After we saw how Macaque treated Wukong in the past and seemed to greatly admire him, I think it's not far-fetched to suppose Macaque sees himself in the way MK idolizes Wukong. And that's perhaps why he tries so hard to break this image MK has of Wukong, because beyond the obvious spite, Macaque doesn't want this image that betrayed him to persist. But at the same time, Macaque is building another image of Wukong who is as twisted and false as the idolized version.

When someone hurts you it's always easier to tell yourself this person never cared about you, because in a way it's more terrifying to admit people who care about you can hurt you willingly. I think that's mainly why Macaque is trying so hard to keep this image of Wukong, the image of someone lazy who doesn't care about anything but power, because it's easier for him to process, it's also easier for him to hate Wukong if he sees him in that light.

I think it's also important to notice that Macaque came for MK, it portrays a certain amount of care from the reserved monkey.

Despite being “redeemed” in the previous season Macaque is still portrayed as an ominous figure. MK's reaction is also a testament of how Macaque's character is not blindly accepted by the “good guy” team.

MK : stop if you're here to mess with me then… Go for it guy. I don't care anymore.

MK first took a defensive pose before giving up and letting Macaque do whatever he came here for. This shows that while very forgiving MK didn't forget Macaque's past as a villain (and perhaps the betrayal he went through) and is still quite cautious around him.

But still there is a certain amount of trust between them, Macaque still proved himself last season and that's probably why MK abandonn his defensive pose so fast.

Macaque : You know it's not fun when you say it loud. Nice tail by the way, that's new.

MK doesn't answer Macaque's light taunt and keeps staring in the distance. Once Macaque sees that MK is going through a very odd and straining situation he stops trying to question him and instead choose to show MK something :

Macaque : Come on, misery kid, I got something to show you.

I think Macaque lil pun on MK's name (Misery Kid) is quite funny considering the situation but also shows a certain amount of familiarity.

This scene is important because it shows the ambiguity of Macaque character. Despite being redeemed, he didn't become a “good guy” and instead still sticks to his taunts and ominous entrances. Macaque is not blindly accepted by the team, he's not an enemy anymore, but it would be far fetched to call him an ally. It's a natural progression of his character after last season.

It's also interesting to notice that Macaque is probably lurking on FFM, he could have stayed in his dojo (which we saw in s1) and yet chose to stay where his “enemy��� (Wukong) rules. Macaque undoubtedly cares for this place and might even consider it home despite Wukong presence. And Wukong probably knew Macaque was lurking on FFM and didn't do anything to throw him away, this is a silent olive branch in its own way. Wukong accepts Macaque presence on his land but doesn't go all the way to welcome him either.

S4 ep 10

The episode starts with MK playing a video game created by Macaque. I think it's really funny how Macaque's video game is very similar to Wukong own video game that we saw in the earlier season. It makes you wonder if Macaque snopped around Wukong's house, saw the video game and decided to do the same.

They're also both in Wukong's house as we can see in this shot :

Macaque obisouly came here before if his video game work so well on Wukong’s consol, this shows a certain amount of familiarity. I personally think Macaque lurked around and inside Wukong home while Wukong wasn't here. The lil monkey is also very familiar with Macaque. I think it's a neat lil detail considering Macaque in JTTW wasn't very upcoming with Wukong's subject (he ate one after Wujing killed it, and while carnivorous tendencies can be common within monkey, macaques are not known for this. I personally think that, more than an act of cruelty, this act was made to contrast with Wukong pure breath stated in the previous chapters of JTTW. A show of how JTTW Macaque didn't want to pursue Buddhism for its teaching but only for glory).

Gotta love how Macaque is so proud of his anime-style drawings. Also did Macaque voice everything in his game? Cause I can't get over him saying “How would I provide for my starving family now??”, 😭😂.

Obviously the video game doesn't catch on with MK, and he leaves the house feeling even more frustrated. I do love the way Macaque rolls his eyes at MK's dramatic way of leaving, like you aren't dramatic Macaque. But beyond that it does show us a more genuine side of Macaque, he's a grumpy dude.

Macaque : Alright Misery Kid, you were supposed to realize by now that the choices the game is giving you aren't the only choices you've got. Life isn't some pre-written thing like a video game where you have to do what the tutorial says.

MK : ok, well, kinda a weird convoluted way to make a point don't you think?

Macaque : Whatever, point is it's time to start making your own choices. Something I wish I learned a lot sooner than I did. You don't want to fight Azure cause people might get hurt, you don't want to not fight him cause people might get hurt. Then do something else. Only you got to decide who you are kiddo.

Lots to unpack there!

First, I can't help but think Macaque’s video game is made to mirror Wukong's. In Wukong’s game, MK learned his lesson (that sometimes you can't rush into a battle and you can use something else than brute force) through the tutorial (the game figure of Wukong). And here Macaque specifically says “life isn't some pre-written thing like a video game where you have to do what the tutorial says”. I do think it's on brand for Macaque to create an entire game to challenge Wukong's way of teaching. Besides the spite, I do think Macaque is right, MK doesn't have to follow the tutorial (Wukong), he can make his own choices, he can separates himself from the idol he's been chasing for so long and stop putting himself to the same standard, because he's not the same person.

Second, I like how MK's sarcastic remark can be linked to Macaque's very shady lesson in season 2. Macaque really is not very good at being upfront with his teaching (probably because he's always trying to spite Wukong while doing it, one way or another, and it makes his teaching confusing).

Third, oh boy, Macaque saying that you have to make your own choices with a faded drawing of Macaque and Wukong in their respective drawing style.

Macaque indeed never truly made his own choices in the past. He always chooses to follow Wukong rather than his own instinct and opinions. Wukong was the one to lead, and Macaque was the one to follow. I think it's telling how Macaque says “something I wish I've learned a lot sooner than I did”, he regrets how he was in the past, how he never stood up for himself. And at the same time, he's reaffirming that he changed, that he's not like that anymore. He's not following anyone anymore, everything he does, he does it because he wants to.

But at the same time, I do think Macaque is trying too hard to not be like his younger self, to the point where he's constantly trying to oppose Wukong (a contrast of how he was in the past). While conflicts can be healthy, too much conflicts are very much not, especially when Macaque keeps feeding into this false image he's building of Wukong, to push himself to hate Wukong even more.

We'll return to this point in the season 4 specials because there will be developpement on Macaque part.

Brotherhood Yandere Headcanons

He in denial that he is a Yandere.

He meets you while he is in his years of mourning for his friends, befriends you, and falls in love with you.

Manipulates you into thinking all he wants is your safety.

Is weirdly obsessed with you sitting on his lap.

He ends up making himself believe he doesn't want you to contact anyone else is because he has trust issues because of Wukong and Macaque.

Yeah, sure.

Regardless, he is gentle with you.

He does try to pressure you into having children with him though.

If Wukong every touches you, he will try to kill Wukong.

Peng

The most insane out of the entire group.

They are like Wukong, falls in love with you on sight and kidnaps you.

Unlike Wukong though, they isn't going to lock you in a cave and hide you as their secret little toy no no no

They put you on a fucking collar and leash and has you crawl on your hands and knees and follow him.

Brags to the other members about you and encourage them to touch you.

In their mind, it doesn't matter because they know you are only theirs and him giving him friends permission to touch you proves it.

Will spit in your mouth and says they are watering you.

Like putting their hands around your neck and saying they'll kill you just to see your scared face

If you die, they'll put you in this room where all their's previous darlings are and dress you up like a doll.

Yellowtusk

He's a recovering Yandere. Knows he's a yandere and is trying to correct himself.

He warns you when you enter a relationship with him. He is the only yandere that if you ever call him out on his behaviour, he will actually listen and correct himself.

If you break up with him, he makes his friends hold him accountable and he's serious about it.

He is very protective of you, and that includes of himself. He doesn't want his tusk to hurt you.

Unlike Peng, he doesn't want others touching you but he tries to hold in his possessiveness. He does communicate to you he doesn't like it and appreciates it when you go out of your way to not touch other people.

When you wear something scandals, he tries to keep himself in his chair and not touch you.

He views you as a price of artwork.

The thing that will make him go full yandere again is if he sees someone hurt you.

You will end up being covered in the blood of whoever hurt you.

The Golden Winged Peng

Korean- King of Bungma (Bungma= Dapeng)

LMK:

Powerful but a coward, we all know their story along with Azure and Tusk. All of them were former Celestials. The three ruled over Camel Ridge and became sworn brothers to Monkey King, Macaque, and Demon Bull King forming the brotherhood. After the "betrayal" of Monkey King they separated the brotherhood the trio stayed together and reunited with Wukong but only to battle and lose. Trapped in the scroll for hundreds of years. Were realized causing havoc to the cosmos. The rest is history For Now.

JTTW:

A demon born from the Primordial Phoenix, Given a high position in heaven which gave him his ego. He gave himself a humanoid form ate all the residence of the Lion Camel Kingdom ruled it for 500 years and then befriended the Azure Lion and Yellow-Toothed Elephant Demons.

Note: LMK and JTTW had Peng and Azure Switched In JTTW Peng was the leader and Azure the follower. Which of course is switched in the show.

His weapons are a ji and a Flask of Yin and Yang Essence which can suck in unsuspecting victims.

Flask of Yin and Yang Essence: After a while, the victim trapped inside the flask will be reduced to a bloody mash. (The flask was broken during the fight between him and Wukong)

In the book, it was the Buddha who subdued the Peng and returned him to Vulture Peak. He confessed to enjoying his demonic life and eating humans., but was left no choice but to abandon his evil ways and he was redeemed. He then became a protector of Buddhist law. He was later sent to destroy fake scripture without text by the Buddha. He is depicted perched above the Buddha's thrown as a guardian deity.

The Ming dynasty suggests Peng was a guardian of faith who watched over the world from an exalted position at the top of the Buddhas' throne.

Legend:

Dapeng Jinchi Mingwang/ Golden-Winged Great Peng His origins are derived from the Indian bird god Garuda.

Penig is one of the eight demi gods of Buddhism, he guards Mount Sumeru and Trāyastriṃśa. Pengi is depicted in the JTTW and General Yue Fei, mentioned in Chinese Buddhist literature.

The famous patriot General Yue Fei was believed to be the incarnation of Dapeng Jinchi Mingwang.

A demonic Peng born from The Primordial Phoenix the leader of flying beings. He also has a sister The Peacock Mahamayuri who once tried and failed to consume the Buddha. When he tried to kill her he was stopped and convinced to promote her to his godmother. Which makes the Golden Winged Peng the spiritual uncle of the Buddha. There is a tale of when Nü Tofu the bat spirit listened to the Buddha sermon on the Lotus Sutra at Leiyin temple. The bat spirit accidentally "broke wind" which stained the pure land. Peng snatched the spirit and killed her. For this Buddha exiled Peng to earth. He reincarnated as Yue Fei and the bat spirit reincarnated as Lady Wang. She married Qin Hui and Lady Wang killed Yue Fei in revenge.

For Backstory On These Two: Qui Hui and Lady Wang were the most hated couple in China for a thousand years. Qui Hui was a politician who gained his status by getting rid of political opponents, framing war heroes and was a sycophant to a foreign emperor. He and his wife both conspired to kill the Great War Hero of the Dynasty Yue Fei. He even becomes a puppet ruler. Qui Hui did not like Yue Fei because he was a great guy loved by all and became very popular even being more popular than the emperor. So Qui Hui had him returned and imprisoned. They torture Yue, but Yue Fei refuses to confess to something he did not do. They had him sentenced to death but in another story, Qui Hui's Wife Lady Wang poisoned Yue Fei. However, Yue Feis' story does not end at his death after a few decades Emperor Zhao Chen absolved Yue Fei and dedicated temples to him. Qui Hui and Lady Wang's betrayal and part in the war heroes' death were made public. In front of Yue Fei's temple, two iron statues of the couple were built for public shaming. People spit, abuse, and flop the statues and they get replaced when damaged they have been replaced 11 times since 1475.

Other Ledgends:

According to the martial arts master Laing Shouyu's book he was a great bird that was the guardian that could get rid of all evil in any area. Not even the MONKEY KING was a match. He was sent to China to defend China from invaders and was reborn as Yue Fei.

Yue Fei

The Shurangama Mantra: A mantra of Buddhist practice in China, Japan, and Korea, pertains to the Great golden-winged Peng bird, the Garuda it includes all species of birds. The Peng is the king among birds. He feasts on dragons, his being span measures an astounding 4,950 km, and when he flaps his wings the sea waters part to the deepest seabed.

Thoughts:

Peng's history and legends paint him as a far more powerful being than we have seen so far in the show if the writers do take anything from legends MK and the gang are in some serious trouble besides the ten kings. Also, it really is crazy that maybe even in the LMK universe Peng might have some serious power he was the last standing of the Sworn brothers in the final fight but that was mainly due to him running away. Peng does get redemption in the book with the LMK writers it's a 50/50 on the show. Also, love it when a character has a historical reincarnation to do some digging into.

Okay, I HAVE to ask this: How serious were Macaque and Lian in the past? Like, what did they do together and how deep were their feelings were for each other? Because I’m already coming up with so many romantic headcanons for them and I can only imagine how wholesome they must’ve been!😭🤧💘

ohohoHO! Starting off with a FUN one. I'll tell you this, I have tons of flashbacks written between Lian and Macaque… one of which is a proposal teeheehee 🤭

Their relationship started out really playful– I mean, 'Lian' first met the monkey boys together, so of course there was a lot of hijinks involved in their relationship at first. And while Lian and Wukong stayed very playful and became close friends, her and Macaque…

They started to share some quiet moments together. There was a reason Wukong convinced Macaque to go and meet Lian that first time, the Monkey King even confided in her about it. He had a request for her, something for the Six-Eared Macaque. The request was… extremely outrageous (this is Wukong we're talking abt here), but she wanted to know how he found the gall to ask that of her. Why would he ask for something so ridiculous for this quiet monkey demon that stuck to the shadows? …Well, she found out real quick.

She paid close attention to Macaque, she found his skill with shadow-puppetry entrancing. He'd tease her, but she was just as quick to shoot back, and the little stunned look he'd have afterwards was always priceless. She loved the performer in him, and as she got to know him more, his sweeter side as well as seeing how worried he could be for his friend's well-being, it wasn't long before she wanted to know every part of him.

In a way, Macaque was also someone who showed Li the world. Due to how busy she was in her past, there wasn't much time for her to go out and be part of the world, and that fact killed her. There were nights she'd spend cooped up in work until her beloved Six-Ears would whisk her away for the night. With his shadow portals, they didn't just stay confined to China either– anywhere they dreamed of, they would go. Macaque could just take her back to pick up work where she left off anyway, nobody would be the wiser to their little adventures.

That's when Macaque really started to see her differently. She had this fascination with the mortal world he couldn't quite wrap his mind around. Watching her interact with mortals in a market under disguise, seeing how easily she befriended the little monkeys on Flower Fruit, it made his heart stir. Something that really got him to fall for her though, was that she saw him differently than how the Brotherhood did. Because of appearance and how close they were, everyone brushed Macaque off as something like an extension to Wukong, the moon to his sun, his shadow.

But not her. Hell, she even snapped at him one time for making the comparison. "You're your own person! I don't want to hear anything about you thinking you're any sort of 'lesser' version to the Monkey King."

"You have to admit, Li, we're pretty similar–"

"If you bring this up again, I'm calling you 'The Hotter Monkey King' in front of everyone."

"PPPPFFFFF–"

"I'll do it it, you know I will!"

"…So you think I'm hotter than Wukong?"

"HEY PENG, WANNA HEAR THIS NEW NICKNAME I HAVE FOR MACAQUE??"

"LI, WAIT–!"

…Yeah. He didn't bring it up again after that. Lian really said what she wanted to say back then.

I actually have a little piece written when they had gone back to Wukong's Shame Temple (though it wasn't called that back then) after a day in Europe, and the two danced and sing a song together that they had heard during their trip I could share, but this ask is getting pretty long. Maybe I'll share it another day lol

Suffice to say, their feelings went so deep for each other, they were ready to swear their undying love for one another. To this day (whether Lian realises it or not), they both carry gifts they made one another. If only things didn't turn out how they did…

I feel like Peng would absolutely adore Mocha but constantly keep their distance from her considering what happened to their niece and nephew in JTTW.

Does Mocha ever try to befriend Peng when she gets older?? Maybe! She’s a cat seeing someone constantly avoid her, and cats get very obsessed with that

Oooo yeah. That defo happens. It’s especially akward because it’s the kid of his sworn bro/crush and his bros hoe- I mean lover.

But another reason he stays away would probably be because… well, she’s a baby lion, and he’s a bird.

Jing, having watched lion king: “Now keep yourself low to the ground-“

Azure: “What are you doing???”

Jing, mischievous smirk: “oh just a pouncing lesson.”

Azure: “???” (Sees Peng) “oh no….”

Peng: “GET HER OFF ME-!”

Jing: “BWAHAHAHAHA”

Peng: “AHHH SHES BITING MY WINGS SHES BITING MY WINGS-“

Let’s just say Peng’s lost a few to many feathers to her. So yes, while mocha WOULD seek him out, he’d mostly avoid her until she’s a bit older.

Besides the demon kings mentioned as the sworn brothers of Wukong, and the father of Jade Faced Demon and Hu A'qi who are also mentioned as demon kings(?), what other mentions of demon kings are and which of these do the pilgrims kill?

I’m surprised you are not aware but MOST of not all the demons that the pilgrims fight are demons kings. We see that Wukong visited about 72 Demon Kings at the start and out of the 72, Wukong befriended 6 of them. A personal headcanon of mine is that there can only be 72 demons, no reason really just a good number, but that if a demon wishes to be the 'King' they must defeat the old one and take over. Such as Wukong taking down the Demon King of Havoc who was trying to take his territory and his subjects.

Synopsis :

My thoughts on this drama :

Okay… this drama is AWESOME. I wasn't expecting much, due to it being Wuxia style and thus not "fantasy" enough for me. But man was I wrong. It's just so so good.

I loved every second of it. They're all bringing such vibrant characters to life, with the emotions just right. I trully enjoyed the variety of characters the show offered. I laughed and cried and raged and applauded! I trully lived the story from beginning to end.

A very very good point: romance is never the focus of the story. It's there, in the background, but it's first and foremost a story about brotherhood, friendship and bonds against adversity.

100% recommended!

Loki & Angrboda:

Sigyn loves Loki deeply as much as she cares for him! You could even call her a little overprotective at times. She knows he can get into trouble which is why she is the order to his chaos. Their intimate relationship is very much active and that's their way of expressing their love and feelings for one other.

Their communication isn't the best at times and that's mostly because Loki has his struggles, though Sigyn doesn't hold this against him. Even if these struggles sometimes cause them to disagree on things and argue.

Loki doesn't spend much time with his family either because of these struggles, but will make up for it by showering his children in gifts, while his wives receive the night of their lives. They're the definition of opposites attract. Originally not having fallen in love at first sight but it developing over time. Loki and Sigyn originally saw each other as good allies they could use for each other's advantage, but it turned into something more.

Sigyn looks up to Angrboda and is very much in love with the giantess. She admires Angrboda's strength and leadership, supporting her as much as she can and showing her appreciation. Angrboda's life keeps reminding Sigyn a lot about what it was like being one of the Valkyries again, finding that and her very comforting! Angrboda is also very loving but sadly they don't get to see each other that often.

They take their time to spend quality time together. Their relationship is very close emotionally, mostly built up on the gentle love they have towards each other.

Qin, Wei and Enyu:

Wei and Sigyn always got along, despite Wei being hesitant to befriend any of the gods! Maybe it was because they were similar in personality or the fact they were both mothers? Either way, It was like something clicked between them the day Wei stumbled upon Sigyn.

Sigyn also knows Qin and Enyu through Wei and they're all like family. Even better Sigyn is the mother to Enyu's closest friend, Vali. Both really enjoy each other's company for their calm and reserved personalities. Sigyn absolutely adores the young boy, almost feeling like a aunt to him!

Sora & Kentarō:

Since Sora is an adoptive daughter of Odin that would make Sigyn her extended family through Loki. Despite this they are often in contact and Sigyn will watch Sora's interviews to show her support. The two ladies get along very well, mostly because Sora was always such a sweetheart ever since Sigyn married into her family.

Sigyn also finds Kentarō, Sora's son with Susanoo absolutely adorable and has taken on the title as "Auntie Sigyn" from the boy. Sigyn has sworn to herself that she will protect him and Sora, no matter what happens. Because they made her feel like she belonged to their family..

Atticus & Aelius:

After aiding and befriending Atticus, Sigyn soon found herself growing protective over the mortal man, knowing his nature was nothing but pure. All he wanted was to reunite with his lover, Apollo and who was she to deny true love and compassion like that?

But as Atticus’s quest for his Lord's love escalated further, Sigyn soon found herself doing a huge favour for the mortal, something she knew the other gods would be disapproving of, even her husband. She creates a child from Apollo and Atticus’s image, to help ease her friend's longing heart.

The goddess isn't close with the child she created for Apollo and Atticus and was only able to visit when Aelius was still an infant, since Atticus struggled being a single father! But even then, she hope's they're both well, proud and honoured to have been a part of his creation so that Atticus would leave his sorrows behind!

Parvati:

Parvati is very energetic and joyful and quite the opposite of Sigyn at times. Even then, Sigyn doesn't really mind this. When she's seperated from the ones she knows she finds herself holding up conversation with Parvati more than anyone else of because their shared experiences of motherhood. They often flatter and brag to one another!

Brunhilde:

Being her ex-sister who understood Sigyn's decision in giving up her title as a Valkyrie for love to some degree. Sigyn has respect for the Valkyrie even though the two ladies were not close but rather, Brunhilde and Freyja were, Sigyn's mother. Brunhilde saw Freyja as a mentor and role model. Hence why Sigyn's hair accessory that she took after her mother's passing looks similar to Brunhilde's. After Ragnarok started their relationship soured but for reasons that are unknown.

Hrist:

They used to get along when Freyja was still alive. Hrist was very much affected by her death and when Sigyn left the Valkyries for love she felt especially betrayed by Sigyn, still in the process of grieving over their loss. Whenever she is reminded of Sigyn or hears her name being mentioned, Hrist becomes defensive, angry and upset no matter what the situation is. 

Sigyn's feelings about her are mixed, since she had expected out of all the Valkyries, Hrist would support or at least understand her choice. So when she saw the disappointment on Hrist's face, Sigyn never dared look her in the eyes again. Upset too but nonetheless wondering how and why did it have to come to such a difficult situation? 

The two are also relatives but in what way isn't confirmed. Hrist used to help Freyja take care of Sigyn since she was a single mother with the young Sigyn. Which is why it hurt so much more seeing her leave! 

Thrud:

Thrud is not only Sigyn's ex sister and one of the few Valkyries to still stay in close contact with Sigyn. Thrud didn't shame her for choosing love instead of their sisterhood which caused Sigyn to be forever grateful for Thruds' acceptance. And how could Thrud not when she always longing to be loved by someone too?

She was actually filled with more than sadness the day Sigyn retired, she felt determined! She was also there when Sigyn lost her mother, why wouldn't Sigyn be there for her? Their bond is very strong and almost unbreakable! 

Thor:

Sigyn knows Thor and while she secretly is not too fond of him for multiple reasons, such as the fact he hurt Jormungandr, challenged her to a battle once and rejected her advances, all in the past because he didn't read the room. She sees him more as a possible ally when in need and like an extended family you don't really talk to a lot. They don't have a close bond but they both hold great respect towards each other for their abilities on the battlefield.

Odin:

Sigyn wouldn't call what she feels towards Odin as respect but rather, respect out of fear and some resentment for her mothers death. Yes she blames Odin's family for not protecting Asgard better. 

She hasn't seen what he is capable of yet, but she knows just by his vibe and the things she was told that he isn't to be messed with. So in secret has been collecting information about him, not being suspected of anything because she married into the family.

Disclaimer: Obviously these rankings are just based off of others’ opinions. I really liked “Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre” even though inseams the majority of people didn���t. Whatever show seems interesting to you, watch it! The majority of guzhuang dramas are made with delicacy and attention to detail. I’ve seen reviews complimenting some dramas with relatively lower ratings, so of course every drama has its fans. I would obviously suggest you all go and watch the top 5 if they sound interesting to you.

Upwards at the top of the Mount Everest along with the help of Everest’s father the three kids from Shanghai along with Dave and his former boss arrived on the same place they had arrived together with Everest last year and on the ground three yeti cubs ran towards Everest and hugged him, seeing he was alright. Yi smiled enchanted as she saw the three cubs with Everest, then she approached the child yeti to see them closer. 

“Are these your siblings?” Yi asked making Everest shake his head and point at Jin and Peng, which were approaching the two. “Cousins?” Yi asked earning a nod from the yeti.

“Are they all boys?” Jin asked Everest, which shook his head and pointed at the second yeti and the third one. “Two boys?” Jin asked earning a nod from Everest. “Sweet” Jin complimented, then the second yeti cub approached Jin growling at him again, making Jin groan at the young litter still seeing Jin as a threat. Everest gave the growling cub a gentle smile, then the cub stopped growling and smiled at Jin and crawled at the boy to give him a hug on the leg.

“Aww” All gushed in chorus from seeing the cub hugging the leg of Jin. Yi went down on her knees holding her hands out at one of the cubs and the first yeti, which is the female walked up at Yi and let Yi grab her and she held the cub in her arms almost letting it fall down due to the weight of the cub. “You’re a little….strong” Yi mentioned trying to hold the cub closer to her face, then had the cub nudge her face on Yi’s forehead.

“I made a new friend again” Jin stated happy, then cried as the yeti cub decided to bite Jin’s hand again, making the little animal chuckle, making Jin shake his head amused by the amusement of the cousin of Everest.

“Hey Everest, have you ever played in a snowball fight?” Peng asked the child yeti, which shook his head. “Come with me, I show you how it works” The Chinese kid mentioned placing his backpack on the ground before running out at the snow-covered ground with the yeti and started to build a small wall out of snow. Jin sat down on the snow to pet the yeti cub on the head, then Yi sat next to him with her yeti on the arms while playing with her, as if she was a toddler.

“Hey wanna play rock, paper, scissor?” Jin offered the cub. “You know” Jin explained forming his hand into a V, then into a fist and the cub nodded understanding, what Jin asked for and held his paw behind his paw. “One, two, three, go!” Jin began holding his flat hand up and the cub made with his fingers a V, scoring one point. “Good, you made one point” Jin mentioned making Yi chuckle.

“You’re losing towards a cub?” Yi questioned making Jin shake his head.

“The game has just started yet, my dear” Jin mentioned, then looked back at the yeti again. “One, two, three, go!” Jin made a V with his hands while the yeti held out a fist. “Again, one, two, three, go!” Jin made a scissor again and the yeti had again held his fist up like a stone. “One, two, three, go!” Jin made a fist and so did the yeti, which didn’t give any of the two a point. “One, two, three, go!” Jin made a paper and the cub made a V, making the boy frown. “How haven’t I scored yet?” Jin asked holding his hand flat and the cub did again the scissor. “I better stay with video games and board games,”

“You’re doing it well. You’re just unlucky” Yi mentioned.

“Hahaha,” Jin said ironically, then the cub watched Everest hide behind a snow-made wall while on the other side beside another wall Peng had thrown a snowball toward Everest landing on the ground beside Everest. The cub, that played with Jin ran at Everest, then made his own snowball and showed it to Everest, which nodded at the cub and he walked to the side to see if he could hit Peng with it.

“It’s great how they’re learning games to play with each other” Jin mentioned, then the other yeti cub pulled Jin on his arms and pointed at the other cub on Yi’s hands, making Jin grin amused at the cub’s favor and he grabbed the yeti lying him down on his arms, then he tickled the cub on the nose making it giggle. “You’re got such beautiful eyes, don’t you? Don’t you?” Jin spoke in a playful voice tickling the yeti’s nose making it laugh. Yi gazed at Jin being all fatherly with the cub and smiled enamored at the scene. “They’re so adorable” Jin confessed taking his hand off the cubs, which grabbed it with his paws to pull it back to him, then Jin sat the cub up, which smiled at the boy big and licked his face up, causing Jin to wail about it.

“Not you too” The raven-haired boy complained about the yeti licking him up with a larger tongue wetting the side of his face including a part of his hair. Yi laughed at the friend, then got licked on her face by the female yeti, making her move her head away from the animal to avoid the sticky tongue.

The third yeti cub came back and yipped to obtain the attention of his fellows, which were dropped down by the teens and the three ran together to Everest, afterward Everest pointed at the new playmates to go to the other side, where Peng was to play in his group.

Jin stood up along with Yi, then both observed the cubs play together with Everest and Peng smiling at the joy they had all in the snowball fight.

“I never saw Peng having so much fun in a snowball fight” The medical student mentioned earning a nod from the girl.

“I think it’s more because of Everest and his cousins” The girl mentioned. “He was hoping he would get the chance to see Everest again and now we’re all here with him” Jin stated earning a nod from the girl.

“I think it was good to come along” Yi mentioned earning a nod from the boy.

“Yeah what if Zara had managed to get, what she wanted?” Jin asked making Yi shrug her shoulders.

“I don’t know, but I think Everest could have handled it. He knows Zara wasn’t quite the nicest person we’ve met, but he wouldn’t do the same mistake he did in the first place to get caught”

“You’re right”

Everest looked back at Yi and Jin and moved his arm, calling the two to join, then Jin lifted his hand thanking Everest for the offer, but he refused it. Everest frowned, then started to hum causing the snow around Jin to pick him up and carry him above the walls up to Peng, dropping him behind the wall.

“Well done Everest” Yi complimented joining Everest’s team, which smiled at the girl, then he shrieked as he got hit by a snowball and saw on the other side Jin laughing after he managed to hit Everest, then Jin widened his eyes as Everest made a snowball, which was as big as a snowman head.

“Everest no!” Jin shouted causing Everest to laugh at Jin’s reaction, before he threw it at Jin.

Dave and Zara’s old friend came along with a piece of large square-shaped ice and light pink squares on it and stopped to see the group on the snowball fight.

“Hey, who wants…..uh fish?” Dave offered unsure about the type of fish they had on the tablet-like ice.

“I think it’s salmon or…..it could also be tuna” The raven-haired man mentioned making Dave shrug his shoulder.

“Peng, Jin, there’s food for us” Yi mentioned watching the two boys leave the back of the wall and make their way up to the two adults, which had the fish on the ice.

“Mmm salmon,” Peng said looking at the ice tableau making Dave laugh.

“I think we need more fish” Dave mentioned and gave the ice to Yi, which took it and sat down with it at the snow-made wall with Jin and Peng next to her.

“Everest do you want one?” Yi asked watching Everest shake his head and hold his hand out, for her to understand, that it was for them only. “Your family probably eats a lot, don’t they?” Yi asked making Everest chuckle.

The three took all one piece to eat and they gazed up at the sky seeing the stars all over the place, making the trio look astonished by how beautiful the stars were up in the dark.

“I totally forgot about the stars” Jin mentioned earning a nod from Yi.

“Your father must be up there watching over you, Yi” Peng mentioned looking up at the girl which nodded.

“He would be proud of us right now” Jin mentioned earning a nod from Yi, while Peng sank his head down a little sad. Jin noticed it and placed his hand on Peng’s hands. “You’re alright cuz?”

“I’ve been thinking…...that this is the second time I brought you two into trouble” Peng started. “I’m sorry about both times”

“Peng don’t blame yourself for that, that’s all my fault….well the first time only. But you don’t need to break your head about that. It was a good thing, we wouldn’t have the chance to befriend Everest and save him from Zara’s hands”

“If we didn’t leave the docks on that night, we wouldn’t have bound more together” Jin mentioned. “We all changed for the better, if you didn’t jump back on that ship the other time I would still be the same self-absorbed douche and Yi would probably continue to avoid contact with her friends or family due to her father’s death,”

“Y...yes that’s kind of true”

“That what you did was the best thing you could have done to us. Even the second time now,”

“I and Yi wouldn’t have figured out, how important it would be to be present at the ash scattering of Mr. Burnish and…...well….” Jin said looking at Yi, which was a little bewildered at Jin and he glanced down at her hand and she got it, then she gave him her hand making the teenage boy smile. “The two of us got now really close together, what I didn’t expect to happen real early” Jin explained the cousin holding Yi’s hand up to his jacket, making Yi smile a little lovely at the boy. Peng moved both his eyebrows up realizing, what Jin was referring to.

“I knew you could do it Jin!” Peng shouted hitting with his fist on Jin’s arm. “What did she say?” The child asked making Jin chuckle.

“Well…..she made it clear, that she loves me” Responded Jin looking at Yi, which lied her head on Jin’s shoulder, followed by him placing his face over her.

“Great” Peng mentioned getting up to walk up at Everest, which was on the ground together with the yeti cubs. “Everest, Jin and Yi are now together, did you know that?” Peng asked making Jin chuckle along with Yi.

“We’re not that far yet” Jin warned getting up on his feet. “But we will achieve it, don’t worry” Jin promised helping Yi up with the fish bits.

“And how long is that going to take?” Peng asked taking a few fish bits from the ice tableau. “Two months?” The boy asked watching Jin swallow two bits of raw salmon.

“It will be one step after the other” Jin mumbled. “And no, it won’t be that long”

“Really?” Peng asked with a smirk,

“Don’t you believe it?” Jin asked crossing his arms making Peng shake his head. Everest who had been watching the three talk had an idea and tapped on Jin’s shoulder. “You believe it, right?” Jin asked the yeti which nodded, then opened his arms up making Jin tilt his head and Everest nodded at the boy, which then opened his arms. “Like this?” Jin asked earning a nod from the yeti which placed his paw behind Yi’s back, which gazed at the yeti questioningly, then Everest thrusts the girl against Jin’s arms while hitting with her forehead on Jin’s nose.

“Everest!” The boy fretted after his romantic interest had hurt his nose. Yi looked up at Jin, who had looked down at her smiling a little abashed and helped her stand straight on her legs, then noticed Peng go to Everest, which had held his fist up for the yeti to fist bump on it. Everest looked at his paw, then formed it into a fist and carefully touched with it on Peng’s fist which nodded.

“We can improve this later,” Peng said looking back at Jin, which observed Peng and the child gave his older cousin a thumb up, then the child yeti copied him making Jin nod. The boy gazed down at the girl, which smiled angelic at the boy, then Jin grabbed Yi’s left hand while he placed his right hand over Yi’s cheek, caressing it watching the girl close her eyes enjoying the affection he was giving her, soon he leaned his head closer to the girl pointing his lips, followed by the girl closing her eyes and going up on her foot tips to get closer to Jin to share her very first kiss.

Peng and Everest looked at each other glad about their friends, then gazed back at them seeing Yi place her arms on Jin’s body and after a couple of seconds, both ended their kiss, gazing at each other romantically followed by Everest rumbling, afterward the two teens gazed at Everest, which smiled at the two along with Peng, which formed with his thumb and index finger a heart and Everest noticed Peng’s show of hands and copied it, earning an impressed smile from Yi.

“Well, we’re not the only ones to be happy about it” Jin mentioned placing his arm behind Yi’s shoulder, which gave him a short peck on the cheek.

“When are we going to scatter the ashes of Mr. Burnish?” Peng asked taking a tuna roll off the ice tableau.

“We can do this after dinner” Jin pointed out. “We still got out ride down there. We don’t have to wait for anyone else of the group”

Everest had accompanied along with his father and the humans back to the road, where the team had left the transporter. Peng carried the backpack with the urn and beside him walked his cousin along with Jin, Yi, Dave and the former leader of the group, that hunted Everest one year ago.

“I think that space is good enough for us all” The raven-haired man mentioned earning a nod from the rest of the group.

“And how does it work?” Peng asked looking at the adults and Dave shrugged his shoulders.

“I don’t know” He answered. “I think you have to say a few words and scatter the ashes all over the place”

Jin removed with Yi’s help the urn out of the backpack and noticed on the ground a smartphone and took it out.

“Is that your smartphone?” Yi asked showing it to the child, which shrugged his shoulders.

“I had noticed it on the trip, but forgot to ask Dave about it” Peng answered and the man with the clear face took the smartphone.

“Zara used this smartphone to track him all over China. That’s why we knew, where you were” The man answered.

“How did she know about the trip anyway?” Yi asked watching the man stove the smartphone in his jacket.

“She was in a restaurant on having lunch and heard Peng’s conversation with Dave how they were talking about the yeti and decided to hide her smartphone in it when no one would see it”

“Okay makes sense” Yi answered and she looked at the downhill on the side of the road, then glanced at Jin, which smiled a little tensed about the reunion.

“Who’s going to do the speech?” Peng asked, then Dave and the other adult looked at each other and the taller man raised his arm.

“I’ve been a little longer in business, so I take the honor of doing this”

“Sure” Dave agreed, then the man thought on how he should start it.

“Mr. Burnish loved the long walks and mountain climbing. Inspired by the documentary of the first two mountaineers to make it to the top of the Mount Everest he had got inspired to do the same as them, but by starting with other mountains before he took the chance to climb the Mount Everest for real. On that day he encountered on the top of the mountain a yeti, but he disappeared as soon as it felt threatened by him. Due to his leadership at the Burnish industries and the determination to prove the world, what he saw on the mountain was real he changed a lot during the years turning more cold, forgetting about the ones he loved, the only person in the family to be present was his sister and the people he worked with,” The man spoke. “Deep down inside him he is a really good man, just society made him feel bad about it and he began to do everything possible to be able to prove he isn’t wrong” The man mentioned looking at Dave, which continued.

“I always saw Mr. Burnish to be a very strict man, but I knew how stern he could be if we failed at our tasks in like keeping an animal encaged. On the road trip we all went out to look for Everest I noticed, that Mr. Burnish was very fond of the nature and at the begin, I had the feeling he really hasn’t been out on the nature for a really long time, due to his reaction on the trees all around us, which were regular broadleaf trees. In the end, Mr. Burnish has let Everest go, cause it would be safe for his species to stay hidden, cause not every person would accept them…...well, for their powers and their being. With the months Mr. Burnish began to change everything around his firm until it became what it is today, taking care of animals, that are close to extinct or regular animals, that are found on the streets”

Jin held his hand on the cap of the urn and he looked at the two friends next to him.

“Are you two going to say anything too?” Jin asked and Yi the girl looked at Peng, which shrugged his shoulders.

“I haven’t known you for so long as the others, but I’m thankful for everything good you did after assisting us to bring Everest back home. It’s sad you’re not here anymore with us. If there were more people out there like you doing that, it would be so good”

“Peng, do you want to say something?” Jin whispered earning a nod from Peng.

“Thank you for letting Everest go back to his home. I don’t know how to speak Yetish, but I know Everest was thankful for everything you did for us and anyone else…...After Miss Burnish told us about, what happened to you and told us about your last wish I felt obligated to do that, even when Jin and Yi weren’t well with the idea in the first place…..Thank you for trusting us with such a special mission” Peng finished and looked up at Jin, which thought on anything he could say in the speech of the group.

“I want to thank you for offering us the ride back to Shanghai after we successfully delivered Everest back to his parents. I got to know you as a really wise and experienced person…..Eventually, if I get the chance I’m taking one of Duchess’ kids to my house along with Peng as you offered. Kai had Yi taken with us in the first place, but after we met Mrs. Tsui we decided to let Kai stay with her since she needed a companion more than we did….” Jin stopped and looked back at the others, which looked at him neutrally, then Jin moved the cap and opened it up and moved the urn down to scatter the ashes which flew above them in the air. The trio watched together the ashes fly across the air, disappearing in the darkness making all the present members stay silent with their heads down. Peng slowly started to sob, then Jin passed behind Yi to hug the boy, which embraced the older cousin hard to cry onto his arms. Jin caressed Peng’s back and glanced at Yi, which gazed up at the sky to see the stars all over the place.

“Yi?” Jin whispered seeing Yi pass her hand under her eye to cover a tear, that streamed down her face and she looked back at the raven-haired boy.

“I just thought on my father” Yi explained, then Jin held out his hand for the girl, making her smile a little and she hugged him and Peng at the same time, which reciprocated it. Everest approached the trio and watched them split after the hug, then smiled at the trio and they jumped at Everest’s arms for an embrace making Everest happy and hold them tight on him.

The two adults smiled simper at seeing the kids sharing one last hug with the yeti child and Everest dropped them down and watched the yeti cubs run at the teens jumping at them.

“Be a good girl,” Yi told one of the cubs, which stood in front of Yi shaking his rear in happiness like a dog, then Yi kissed the cub on the forehead and watched the cub go at Jin, which went down on his knees to pet the cub on the head.

“I’m gonna miss holding them” Jin confessed, then got visited by the second cub, which jumped at Jin giving him a lick on his face and follows the first yeti, then the third yeti cub sat in front of the boy starting to growl again at the boy. “You still think I’m bad?” Jin asked shocked, then saw the cub laugh, making Jin smile enchanted by how adorable the laughter of the yeti sounded like. Jin widened his eyes and looked back to see the first two yetis having Jin’s shoes inside their mouth chewing on it making Jin groan annoyed. “So you two are the reason I’m going to freeze my feet off” Jin implied making Yi and Peng laugh at the current situation. “You know what, I offer it to you. So you can remember us” Jin enunciated making the cubs smile and continue to chew on the shoes of the teenage boy.

“We will get you a reserve for your feet, so we can get home in one piece” Yi offered the boy getting down on her own knees, earning a nod from Jin, which leaned his forehead on Yi’s making her smile.

Everest whimpered at his father, which nodded and Everest pointed at the vehicle and back to his father and the group looked at each other, wondering, what the kid was telling them.

“I think Everest said his father is going to bring us down,” Yi said and looked at Everest which nodded and made a tidal wave move with his arm. “With their powers, of course,” Yi added earning a thumb up from the yeti.

“Okay, get in and hold yourself tight. It might get a little turbulent” The man mentioned opening the side door of the vehicle for the whole crew to get back into the van. Dave and the adult sat in front of the cabin and gave the yetis a thumb up and the large yeti adult started to hum to call out a large cloud to pick up the vehicle and he stood on the back of the cloud behind the vehicle, then flew on the cloud away leaving the valley with the rest of the yeti youths back, which waved goodbye at their human friends.

from what I just read (take it with the BIGGEST grain of salt because I did read it from wikipedia of all places), Peng is the Buddha's spiritual uncle.

Abominable (2019)

2019’s Abominable is aimed towards smaller children. They won’t recognize the familiar story elements the way their parents will. Nonetheless, the tried-and-true story entertains. The story’s setting, use of music, warmth - and being an original property - go a long way.

Captured by zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) for wealthy industrialist Burnish (Eddie Izzard), a young yeti escapes its cage and is discovered by teenager Yi (Chloe Bennet). She and her friends Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai) embarks on a journey to bring the abominable snowman they name Everest back home.

Young adults befriending a cryptid is something we’ve seen numerous times. The initial bond, the adults who want to capture the creature and then off we go, having some laughs between the various perils of the road. Beyond the journey from A to B, there’s not much else to Abominable. Yi mourns the loss of her father and the adventure takes her across China to locations they wanted to visit but the movie’s only slightly concerned with loss. Mostly, it’s about getting away from the bad guys and the humor. The jokes are the kind little ones will find hilarious. Adults will chuckle. I like the story's focus on modern Asian culture and characters. Burnish is well fleshed out (even if it makes him a little inconsistent) and you can tell people really believed in the project. If only the screenplay had the kind of depth Pixar’s works do.

The best parts of Abominable are when Yi, Everest and their friends make their way towards the yeti’s home. The animated rendition of the Giant Buddha of Leshan is particularly good and several other landmarks show off the beauty of the country as well as the skill of the animators working at Dreamworks. Numerous films in recent years have found ways to appeal to the Chinese market. Abominable does it organically. If the kids were in North America trying to get to Mount Everest, it’d be damn near impossible. This? You can buy it in a children’s movie kind of way.

The way the picture uses music is also noteworthy. Yi plays the violin and the wail of its strings combined with Everest's grumbles make for a pleasant duet even before the creature's powers are unleashed in big magical-filled sequences that look wonderful on the big screen. It adds some nice texture to the movie much better than the gags about the whooping snakes or animal sidekick given to Dr. Zara.

I don’t think Abominable is the kind of picture that will have long legs. The writing just isn’t tight enough. Its intended audience isn’t worried about that and if your kids are clamoring to see it, neither should you. When you go check it out, stick around for the end credits. Stills expand the story a little bit, and there’s a gag right at the end. (Theatrical version on the big screen, October 3, 2019)
