Note
ive tried to request and then immediately talked myself out of it 3 times now bc i get so nervous about asking off anon 😭 uhh can i get the prime assets dressing up :3c or like their clothing habits/preferences
Dressing them up like barbie dolls. I should do one of those dress up memes for them and draw them in stupid outfits. I'm putting Coyle in a skirt.
COYLE
- This man would wear leather 90% of the time, including leather pants. He takes wonderful care of his leather as well, makes sure to condition it as often as needed to keep it beautiful. If you see him sniffing his leather jacket, ignore it.
- It does not matter that he's sweating to death in said leather, he's not taking it off. He can't let you see his shirt with puppies on it underneath /j
- Prefers his clothing rather tight, super loose fitting clothing feels like it gets in the way. He likes the feeling of the wires wrapped around him for that reason.
- Would commit denim on denim crimes. Denim jeans, denim jacket, denim boots (referred to as doots by futterman). He does this to piss people off.
- Despises too much color in an outfit. Bright and colorful disgusts him, he's wearing neutrals and only neutrals.
- Would let a reagent decorate his beard with bows if he was promised pistachios. This is only if the pistachios are in his hands while they decorate.
- You'd think he'd wear heeled boots to make himself seem taller, but you'd be wrong! He's got the insoles that make him taller instead :)
- I think you could convince him to wear a rodeo cowboy outfit. Tassels and all that. You'd tell him he looks cool and he'd believe you.
- Cargo short dad vibes. Each pocket is full of cigarettes and/or pistachios. He doesn't care about the fashion he likes the utility. Takes him a good 5 minutes to get anything out of a pocket though.
- Wore fingerless gloves when he was younger bc he thought they made him look cooler. He'd try them on again and Franco would bully him relentlessly for trying to act younger than he is. He's crying in his room afterward.
MOTHER GOOSEBERRY
- She'd be the English teacher with a collection of fun skirts. Cute patterns, silly patterns, gaudy patterns, you name it, she's wearing it. Futterman says she looks like a rainbow threw up on her.
- She'd also love bold earring choices. Big earrings that make you double-take to make sure you saw them right, earrings that light up, anything with frills. She's a lover of the bold, partially because the children love her crazy styles.
- She'd play around with different lipstick colors if she had access to them. A nice purple lip would make her happy. If Futterman didn't call her a whore for wearing it.
- Futterman would also call her a whore if she tried to wear a shorter skirt, but she'd still tried to get away with it. Not super short, mind you, she's got an image to keep up for the children, but maybe something a little below the knees?
- If a reagent offered to do her hair, like put little accessories in it and detangle it, she'd cry. She wants to feel feminine and she wants to feel pretty, and a pretty bow might help her with that.
- She'd love to wear a petticoat under her skirts, the extra poof would make her feel fun. That's if Futterman didn't find a way to make a fat joke about it.
- Futterman himself would have a collection of very dapper bow ties. Polka-dots and stripes and maybe even little stars, and a variety of colors. He feels fancy when she changes them out for him.
- He'd hate it, but I think Phyllis would have a variety of little hats for him. I wanna see him in one of those little propeller hats. Spin it and she takes off of the ground.
- If it were modern times I could absolutely see her wearing a giant t-shirt with something like a kitten or a puppy on it. Maybe even tie-dye. She'd be a big t-shirt enjoyer is the main idea here.
- Would LOVE chunky heels or maybe even platforms if she was feeling adventurous, but I have this bad feeling she already got shit for being a tall woman. Let her be an even taller queen.
FRANCO
- I love the concept that he wears his clothes too big to feel smaller. While I'm not sure if Murkoff gave him his outfit that he wears in game, I don't think he's too upset about it being oversized.
- I also think that he likes wearing his suits bc they make him feel a little less ugly. He knows the suit is dirty and stained with a bunch of different shit, but a suit is a suit, and suits make you handsome, right?
- He's very particular about his bow ties, he only likes a select few patterns and colors. They still have to match with his suits, though. Can't have himself looking like a fool who doesn't know how to dress!
- Would attempt to steal one of Futterman's bow ties bc he likes it and thinks it'd look better on him. Would almost get fucking annihilated as a result.
- We know his hygiene isn't great from the comics, but I think he's at least slightly ashamed about just how filthy his outfit is. I think he's just kinda accepted that it's not going to be cleaned/he has no way to clean it.
- If you put him in a brand new zoot suit and stuck him in front of a mirror, he'd try to act cocky and like he knew he was handsome as hell. But you'd absolutely be able to tell by how he's smiling and how his eyes are watery that he hasn't felt this attractive in awhile.
- A personalized pacifier WOULD be considered a part of an outfit. If his paci matched his outfit he'd feel so damn cool. And if it had his name on it and looked nice? He'd feel like a prince.
- He's gotta wear his dress shoes, they're a mandatory part of his look, but he wishes they had a little more heel to them. He's joining Coyle in the insoles that make him taller. My short king.
- Outside of the suits, he'd love a soft, heavy sweater. Something that really makes him feel like he's being cuddled. The color wouldn't really matter to him, as long as it offered him some comfort.
- I'm a firm believer in him wearing diamond earrings. I know it doesn't fit as much with the baby part of him, but the mobster in him loves showing off his wealth. He'd fiddle with them a lot, though.
I accidentally assigned Gooseberry's style as "lesbian art teacher" and I won't be taking it back ❤️

Fuck JKR: How To Create A Harry Potter-Esque Aesthetic Without Any Harry Potter In It
So I saw a few posts from people mentioning that a reason people might be into Harry Potter is because of the aesthetic or atmosphere, and ya know what? I can't even argue that, because if there's one thing about HP, it's that it Sure Does Have Aesthetic And Atmosphere.
So! I'm gonna tell you how to STEAL ITS LOOK! Because:
JK Rowling considers ANY support of her work to be support of her politics.
Fan content/fan merch is still free advertisement for Rowling's work. YOU might not choose to give her money, but you can't be sure you won't pull people into the fandom who will.
Everyone should create more things that aren't tied to corporate-owned IP, period.
So. Most things in these films have an aged, antique look. You'll see a lot of brown hues, both on sets and on people's clothes. There's a lot of near-blacks (especially charcoals and walnuts) and lighter grays on the sets, especially from the third film onwards. (Wood is more often than not stained dark, while lighter hues are often provided by bricks or plaster.) The last two films use a lot of stormy blues and grays. Prisoner of Azkaban also emphasizes contrast between tones, which heightens a sense of texture. True black also appears throughout the films, such as on students' uniforms and many Death Eaters' outfits, and on the chairs in Malfoy Manor. White appears occasionally, especially on Hedwig, students' shirts, or during winter scenes, but pure white isn't otherwise really common. Paper or parchment is usually warm beige. There's also a lot of silver, gold, and brass, often appearing on things like dishware, tools, trinkets, Christmas baubles, and so forth. Bronze also comes up occasionally.
Reds, yellows, blues, and greens are pretty common throughout the films, even outside of Hogwarts, though you'll see just about every color somewhere. For example, orange is often found around the Weasleys, and orange, maroon, and purple feature in the divination classroom. Teal features prominently in Grimmauld Place (contrasted with saffron yellows).
Most colors aren't really super bright; a lot of the time they look a little faded, or like they're colored with natural dyes. If you use medieval illustrations to source your colors, or aim for earth tones and jewel tones, you'll be about right for a lot of what you see in the films. Bright colors are pretty rare; some of the brights we do see are in Honeydukes, Weasleys' Wizarding Wheezes, and certain magical effects, such as Floo fire.
A lot of light is provided by candles, torches, or fireplaces, which cast a warm yellow/orange light. Moonlight is represented by blue light in the first and second films. Blue light is also used for the Goblet of Fire and the penseive.
Another thing you gotta have in there is clutter. It should look kinda antique and give off a kind of magical or mystical atmosphere. Think books, storage jars, orreries, crystal balls, old lamps, antique clocks, vintage glassware, antique mirrors, old teapots, and little metal trinkets. (If you're trying to decorate a physical room, your stuff doesn't have to actually be antique, of course; antique-styled is fine.)
Texture is also very important, which can be represented with full or top grain leather book covers, stone walls, dents and scratches, cracks, embellishments, and embossing. Additionally, all damage and wear gives a sense of oldness to things. Stains and variegated colors also add interest. (If you're decorating a physical space, you might look into aging/distressing/antiquing techniques.)
If you want a space to look cozy, you don't really want bare or blank walls. Shelves, paintings, tapestries, and wallpaper can all help with that. Again, use brown, rather than black. Warm, yellow lighting will also help. If you lean toward blacks and cool lighting, you're going to have a colder-looking space.
Fashion in the wizarding world is extremely all over the place, ranging from stereotypical fantasy witch and wizard clothing, to pretty normal vintage clothing, to some wacky vintage-inspired looks, to the kind of fashion that would be put under the cozycore umbrella, to ordinary modern clothing. One thing that's absent is subculture fashion as we know it. (Bellatrix Lestrange does look kinda goth, but it's less a subculture thing, and more a "yeah we're putting our bad guys in fancy black stuff" thing.)
If you're trying to lean into the whole quirky/eccentric/old-fashioned kinda thing, you'll want to pass over the more modern and obviously synthetic type stuff. Also, patterns, textured fabrics, knits, mixed colors, lace, and other embellishments can add interest to outfits.
Architecture is also all over the place. Hogwarts is pretty medieval, while places like Diagon Alley give more Victorian vibe. The main thing is looking old fashioned and quaint.
To try and summarize all of that:
Browns. Lots and lots and lots of browns. Blacks and grays, too. Contrast between light and dark browns and blacks/grays.
More beige and gray than pure white; more charcoal gray and dark walnut brown than true black.
Among other colors, mostly earth tones and jewel tones. Very limited brights.
Polished metal and glass also add shininess.
Old-fashioned. Vintage. Antique.
Clutter, texture, patterns, variegation. Minimalist/clean aesthetic avoided.
Aged and distressed.
Lighting often yellow/orange due to coming from fire. Blue/teal light often coming from moonlight and certain magical light sources.
Now, here are some things we actually don't see. I'm not mentioning them to discourage you from using them if they're what you really want, but to inform you about them so you can consider whether they might throw off the vibe for you:
Green/purple/black combos.
Purple/silver/black combos. Pink/purple/teal combos.
Pink/black combos.
Orange/black combos.
Green/orange/purple combos.
Red/black combos.
Basically a lot of combos commonly associated with Halloween, witches, or vampires.
Big raw crystals. We see crystal balls now and then, but that's it.
Other natural items used as decorations - feathers, pinecones, sticks, etc. The one exception I can think of are the shells embedded in the walls of Shell Cottage.
Crushed velvet. Lots of fantasy uses this, HP films don't.
If you need inspiration, go look up medieval and renaissance diagrams and illustrations of stuff like the four elements, the zodiac, the solar system, and all that. Go look up alchemical symbols and emblems. Search up pre-WWII vintage ephemera. Go look up Victorian clipart. Look up stuff like botanical, zoological, and astronomical books and art from the 17th-19th centuries. Look up vintage wallpaper and fabric patterns. Look at vintage-style crafts. Research period architecture and fashion. Research European heraldry.
If you're wondering what exactly you're going to design around without Hogwarts and the Four Houses, here are some suggestions:
The four classical elements (earth, air, fire, and water)
The four seasons
Card suits - Tarot, French, whatever you want
Holidays - Halloween, Christmas, whatever
Fairy tales
Flowers
Mythical creatures
Bugs
Birds
Any other animals you like
Ecosystems
Your own original worldbuilding
So yeah, there ya go. You don't need to keep participating in HP to indulge in the aesthetic.
[NOTICE: Anybody who clowns on this post by making this about them and their childhood, patting themselves on the back about their chosen means of "ethical" participation, praising the fandom, or adding any other form of irrelevant bullshit is getting blocked. Also, I don't want to hear about PJO or Earthsea again for the millionth time, either.]

Heehoo got tagged by @nowonderi-nc :]
Last song I Listened to
Hmmmm hard to remember since I go through a few playlists at work but I think it’s Solaris Destroyed from 06! (From my Where the Water Narrows vibes playlist)
Currently watching
Uuuuh does the Party Crashers yt channel count? I don’t really watch series and stuff but I watch their videos before bed most times :] that and random Lethal Company videos
Spicy/sweet/savory
Savoury first, then sweet, then spicy! I like them all when done well but that’s the order
Current Obsessions
Sonic is my long-term one (3+ years, a record so far! I usually switch after 2 or so) but I've been really into colorimetry lately! It helped a lot dressing myself (and helped me take the leap with some hair dye I had been thinking about) and boosted my confidence, super cool! Makes me feel like a fashionista B) unlocking my inner Edna Mode
Relationship Status
Now that’s a bit personal isn't it B)
Fav color
Oof, that’s hard one! I love more colors than I dislike. But I’d say my three favorites are bright red, deep blue (i wear those two a lot) and purple (it doesn't look good on me but it's usually my "pick a color" choice for games and stuff
Tagging time uuuuuh I don't know a lot of people so if any of y'all below want to, let's gooo

Holy Clothing is NOT Colorfast
Just putting this out there as I see lots of people super excited about the new masculine styles that Holy Clothing has recently launched.
Their clothing is beautiful but dangerous!
You should 1000000% use some method to set they dye, ESPECIALLY in any of their dark purple, dark blue, dark green, dark yellow, and all red colorways. I haven't had the same issues with their lighter or more pastel selections. I haven't noticed it with black, but I try to wash all black things together anyway.
I wash everything only in cold water. I typically use dye and scent free detergent, I try for hypoallergenic when I can find it because I'm a delicate fucking flower.
Even after washing once, I've come home after work with my body dyed complete purple. I've also wound up with blue staining on a Vera Bradley cotton backpack and other misc canvas and PU leather bags just from friction, no moisture. It's then transfered from my bag onto other clothing when I didn't notice it in time.
Even after many washes, the clothes often still bleed a little, so I usually throw them in with black jeans and dress pants or towels just to be cautious.
Today I had a catastrophic failure with a dark purple dress. I think that it possibly had to do with the type of detergent I used, perhaps it was too aggressive.
I used the ALL Fresh & Clean OxiPlus Odor Lifter.
I have never used it before, I was trying it out because I noticed my athletic wear wasn't as fresh as I'd like with my normal gentle detergents and I haven't had an allergic reaction to ALL in the past.
It was immediately obvious what had happened because my grey jeans were lavender and every single synthetic fabric was bright purple. The black jeans weren't as obvious. Compression socks, period panties, high end shape wear: all of it purple.
When this happens DO NOT ALLOW THE CLOTHES TO DRY.
Immediately get them into your soaking bath of choice. I used more detergent and COLD WATER. I didn't even have to agitate the tub much at all for all of the water to be completely BLACK there was so much dye.
Soaked, agitated, squeezed, and immediately got everything back into a COLD normal wash cycle.
All of the lighter colored synthetics are ruined, but I think I saved the jeans. I know I was only lucky because I worked quickly.
So pleased enjoy all the new whimsygoth, fairy, elf, and rennfaire styles Holy Clothing is putting out lately.
But for the love of whatever mystic power you choose SET THE DYE AND USE GENTLE DETERGENTS ONLY.

Rant (if you don't want to read please scroll to the bottom)
This is my two cents on the live action snow white movie as a theater kid, cosplayer, Disney princess lover, and snow white doppelganger.
1-Snow white. Now before you come after me for talking about the actress this is NOT because she isn't white, she is a beautiful actress and imo her not being white doesn't matter, racism is not tolerated on my blog. The only thing I have "against" her is the snippet of her singing that we've gotten. Her voice is beautiful, but not right for snow white. In the snippet of her singing "whistle while you work" It feels too heavy for the character. In my opinion someone with a more operatic voice would've fit the role more. There are other Disney princess roles that would suit her voice better, but snow white needs someone with a softer voice.
2 (part A)- The dress. The dress sucks, you can't change my mind. It's so ugly. The yellow color they made her skirt looks so tacky and bright, same with the blue. The material they made her skirt out of looks so costumy and it's way too puffy. the bodice isn't super bad, but, the waistline is weird and the lace up thing that's going on in the front feels out of place. Her sleeves are cool I guess? There are many examples of Disney butchering the dress in live action adaptations (ex. Beauty and the beast), but they also have some good examples where they do the dress justice (ex. Cinderella), it's always kinda a hit or miss with Disney. I've done theater for years, and I've been in two productions of beauty and the beast the musical (one with a local theater and one with my hs theater), both times with belles dress they have knocked it out of the park, I'm not being biased they have made some horrid costumes believe me, but, both times I saw belles yellow dress for the first time it was so amazing and beautiful. Cosplayers are another good example of making Disney princess dresses look good. one of my cosplay mutuals made an Ariel dress, yes it was teal (but that's a discussion for another post), but it felt so real. It didn't look costumy at all, and the material looked so nice and everything looked like it's belonged. If theater departments and cosplayers with a limited budget can make Disney dresses better than DISNEY then that shows how much effort they really put into their movies. Also what's with the necklace? I know it's probably gonna be incorporated into the story like "her mom gave it to her before she died" or something because Disney loves to do that but it just looks like they started recording and she forgot to take her necklace off.(If you want to hear more I recommend lovebunnycos's videos, you can find them on tiktok and Instagram)
Tumblr media
2 (part B)- the hair and makeup. I have been told countless times that I look like snow white (not really right now because my hair is purple and in a pixie cut) especially when my hair is in a bob, Im very pale,I have a round face, and I always dye my hair black, so I unintentionally look like her (on the dl she's one of my least fav princesses so I'm not trying to brag💔). I'm not trying to be biased or anything when I say this but her hair sucks. It does not look flattering on this beautiful actress. Its cut weird and it looks very unnatural. I see what they were trying to do with it at the ends but it was not executed well. I like that they gave her brown hair because black just wouldn'tve looked good imo, but other than that it just looks bad. Now her makeup, it's not bad at all but I do think it needs tweaked. First I would give her more blush on the apples of her cheeks, on her chin, and on her nose. It would really add to the cartoon look and definitely make her look younger (I'm not saying she doesn't look young it's just snow white is literally a child). I think using contour to make her face rounder and adding more red to the lips would add a lot more to the look. Other than that I don't really have any complaints about the makeup. Also where did her bow go? I loved the bow :(
Tumblr media
3.- The dwarfs. What are you doing Disney? They got rid of them but then brought them back but made them cgi because they wanted to be PC but in turn became less PC. Just hire little people?? Little people exist, they don't bite. Just hire seven people with dwarfism and leave your weird cgi for animals. Literally what was Disney thinking making them cgi? Again just Disney not caring or putting any effort in their live action movies.
4- yapping. Disney needs to stop with live action movies. I know there are people who love live action adaptations, and I've enjoyed a few of them. With Cinderella it was fun! Jungle book was cool, and then lion king everyone was tired. If they need more ideas they need to hire younger writers. There are tons of new stories out there that will never reach people because Disney's too busy cranking out live action cash grabs and sequels to movies that don't need to be tampered with. It's gotten so bad that the Internet will believe anyone if they say another movie is being made into live action (ex. "Live action" tangled, where Avantika Vandanapu was harassed for being fan casted as repunzle.). I think if Disney really wants to make more money they should put more effort into their movies and listen to what the audience want. Disney hasn't been original in decades, every movie is a remake of something, but you could take an already made story and make it interesting in other ways.
No matter what I say it's not gonna change anything. I'm a teenage girl ranting on Tumblr and Disney is a giant multi million dollar company run by white rich men who only care about money. It's just nice thinking some people will hear what I have to say and agree with it, even tho it won't change the bigger picture.
I can change a familys life though. Disney doesn't care about people dying or what's happening on the other side of the world, but we as individuals can. ⬇️
This is my friend Farah, her and her two little boys were displaced in the ongoing g3n0c1d3 happening in g🍉za. If you could donate to or share her gofund me it would mean so much. Or if you could just reblog this post and say "scroll to the bottom" it would help too. https://gofund.me/545623fe
Thank you 💜

‘80′s Goths (aka Trad Goths)
A thing I wrote about '80's Goth style in response to a comment from an obviously younger person commenting on the '80's make up video from the previous aggregate.
Early Goth basically grew out of Punk with a lot of metal and some new wave thrown in.  Goth had no sub-genres yet because those didn't develop until some point in the '90's.  It was all just Goth.  You can see the cross pollination in the music of the period.  Sisters of Mercy is as quintessentially as '80's Goth as it gets, and you can hear how heavy their sound is compared to the also very Goth Smiths at the other end of the sound spectrum.  Goths of my era listened to an eclectic mix of stuff.  It was totally reasonable to be a Goth and also like Metallica (Metal), and classic Punk and poppier new wave influenced things like Depeche Mode.
Glam hadn't really been a thing since we were kids.  Bowie wasn't Glam himself by the time Goth was happening, remember, though some of us DID look back stylistically to his Ziggy Stardust Era which you can see in the corsets and make up choices, but you can also see a lot of new wave in hair and make up mixed in with the original punk and some metal influence.  Clothing was often where punk and metal really mixed.
My first Mohawk was black, but my second in early '89 was a dark purple.  Goths were allowed to have whatever hair.  Not everyone could afford hair dye in the era before the brighter cheaper colours came in.  Again, it's a matter of what you could afford and what you had access to.  I saved up to get mine done professionally, but we were in the era of bleach and Koolaid options as well as people repurposing DIY hair products.  If you had dark hair, you could get bright orange with Sun In for example.  Yes, black was most common and you actually could buy black Clairol or the like, which made it the most popular option, but most popular doesn't mean only option.
You can't really separate the 80's Goth Look from the '80's Goth Music because the two things were so intertwined and so much what early Goth was as a culture.
Something it is super hard to make people who didn't start dressing this way until after commodification really grasp is just how DIY early Goth was.  You couldn't just go to a store and buy Goth clothes and jewelry at first.  By the end of the decade you could buy an ankh necklace because of things like sandman, but most of the jewelry was handmade by the people wearing it or other Goths, selling it, often on blankets while they made more, or it was vintage stuff that had be repurposed, bought from second hand stores or raided from older relatives.  Building a goth wardrobe was exhausting and time consuming and often involved patience.
Finding clothes was an endless round of scavenger hunting and DIY and repurposing.  Most of us were very poor and again, nothing was made for us except a few things other impoverished Goths made at the end of the decade.  Basically, think etsy only without the internet, so consignment stores and craft fairs and little pop up carts next to those people selling their jewelry on blankets and really that's more an early '90's thing.
We would scouer second hand shops.  Luckily places like Good Will were not as picked over then.  We looked through old boxes of elder relative's clothes.  We learned to do it yourself dye things that were a good cut but the wrong color.  We used to make things or repurpose things or patch things together out of multiple pieces and maybe some netting.  We learned to add trims and frills if we were into that.  We bodged things together with safety pins like the punks we grew out of.  We made do.
Yes really, some people had things with glittery fabrics some times or beading or lace or sequins.  It depended entirely on your taste and what you could find or knew how to make.  Some of the nuance is lost in the photos because this was an era of Polaroids and film photography and some stuff aged better than others.
There was no uniform.  No one true style.  No mass production.  Everything was individual.  I can not describe '80's goth in terms of strict criteria because that criteria didn't exist.  It should NOT exist now.  We knew Goth when we saw or heard it.  That was enough.
I think this is why so many of us Elder Goths go ballistic when someone starts trying to police or gate keep Goth.  (Except for literal NAZIs who can fuck right off.  We don't want them, whatever they are calling themselves that decade.  It's the same thing as the Punk community self-policeing over that).  Anything else? It's like Gender: you are Goth if you say you are Goth.  Work out your own version of what that means.
So yes, purple hair in the late '80's is historically accurate.  Yes, you could have things like a glittery or sequined or beaded shirt or sweater or dress for those who wore dresses or skirts.  (Some Goth clothing was gendered; some was super androgynous.  A lot of '80's and '90's goths were some brand of queer, gender-nonconforming, trans, and or what we'd now call non-binary, but back then we mostly called ourselves androgynous.  Some cis men wore skirts because they liked how they looked or found them comfortable.  A lot of them switched to kilts later on, but not always.  In the late '80's-early '90's Goth culture was full of people playing with gender expression for a host of reasons).
There was a mainstream trend for fancy tights and pantyhose with designs or glitter or different colours in them.  Goths could actually find black pantyhose and tights and fishnets at a reasonable price in mainstream stores.  Some of the panty hose had cute little patterns on them, usually at the ankles or up the back, but also all over sometimes.  some were glittery or extra shiny.  It was fine!  It was the same with lace and fishnet and long satin elbow gloves mostly thanks to Madonna.  This is why you see old trad goths wearing these types of accessories.  You could afford them!  You didn't have to hand make them!  The bead and cross and rosary thing was because you could buy those cheap at stores because mainstream people also wore them.   Thanks to people like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna creating a mainstream market for accessories we could use too.
Our subculture hasn't been properly captured in media it's easy to access.  Most of Goths in movie or TV in the '80's and early '90's were stereotypes made or chosen by people who weren't goth either to demonize us as part of a moral panic or as a punchline or a freak show.  The fair representation is in the photographs taken of goths by goths at the time and in the memories of Elder Goths like me.
Trust me, the Karolina Żebrowska makeover looks just fine to me, within the range of what people were wearing then.  She could have walked into a club or a house party and fit right the fuck in.  Looking at her made me a little nostalgic for the scent of clove cigarettes even though I'm allergic.  She did just fine.

OH YOU KNOW WHAT, I should dye my hair this weekend.
I love going a violet black- but last time I mixed blue black and a violet it was just a little light for me still? Probably because each were actually level 2 and not level 1. And they weren’t super purple either, even in the sun. These were what I used.

I used 2 tubes of each + developer (total of 16oz to put in my hair, it was a little over kill, but 1 tube each wouldn’t have covered all my hair)
Other color options I have:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The goal is to be mostly very black with a hint of violet purple (not the warm “violet” above but like real neutral to cool violet purple) so that in the sunlight it looks fun and kinda colorful but most of the time it looks like black hair so it isn’t “unprofessional” (🤮🤮 that we have those kind of societal ‘rules’ to begin with)
I could do
Same dye + added “Jet Black” or “Black Onyx.” I think this would be darker but less colorful.
Switch to the “brights” for the color and have more “Jet Black” or “Black Onyx.” This runs the risk of maybe being too colorful which may be seen as too “unprofessional” for the headshots on Monday, may also be lighter when it inevitably washes out which I don’t like as much, but also COLORFUL = dopamine.
Switch entirely to dark hair line, which I think would be give me the richest, darkest colors BUT that “violet” option (only purple option still dark) is so red that it may be too warm toned for what I want. Plus the violet isn’t really that dark.
What I’m thinking I may do is mix 14oz total (3.5 oz dye in each
3 tubes of Black Onyx (2.5oz in each bowl)
1/2 tube of Sapphire (0.5oz in each bowl)
1/2 tube of Purple (0.5oz in each bowl)
Idk?? I could buy like 6 tubes black onyx if they’re in stock and 1 of each of the colors and then have a leftover “set” to re do it at the end of the summer?

do the girls have assigned or chosen colors?? if not, which colors do you think fit each member most??
hiii! so there are a few girls who have colors but they're more "fandom" colors instead of their colors! rocket girls had official support colors (below)
Tumblr media
and eunseo has sort of self chosen Blue, arggg I can't find the translation source but I know she has said before that if she gave a name to eunseo fans it would be Blue however shortly after she nicknamed eunseo fans Dochidan🦔💙 which everyone took up more than Blue :) it means hedgehog I think and she uses those emojis so I think it still incorporates the blue and a bunch of her fansites have Blue in their name. Everyone seems to stick to that super true primary color blue to a darker navy, I haven't seen any light blue used by her or dochidan!
as far as the rest of the girls, I think a few colors are universally associated with some members by ujung:
seola - red (obvious reasons)
dayoung - pink
soobin - peach (soobs nickname is peach so the color peach just naturally gets used a lot in reference to her)
the rest are pretty up to personal interpretation!
yeoreum has said her fav color is pastels and shes said pastel blue in the past too so I would choose that for her :)
bona's favorite color notoriously changes all the time HAHA but I think i would choose purple for her its elegant and she could be any range of it from lavender to royal purple!
dawon i would choose white its just an elegant simple color and suits her vibe I feel like she dabbles in minimalism and a yeezy like neutral-ification of everything hahaha
yeonjung - yellow because shes the sun and a leo and so bright!
exy - bright orange bc of her years long hair dye addiction i doubt anyone could think of another color
luda - light green! I just think this suits her shes fresh and cute!

hi hi hi!!! i’m not a natural dye expert by any means but i have experience working with it and i LOVE yapping about natural dye and historical fashion so. this post is really buzzing around my brain. i'm so so sorry for the absolutely incoherent rant i'm about to subject you to. (obviously this is just me and my experiences with dye processes talking. again. not the expert.)
(under a read more because good god i'm just yapping away here.)
first off, can i throw another contender in the ring for what color is Irene's Color™?? consider. indigo!! indigo is a natural dye that gives a beautiful blue, very deep and very rich. it's perfect for irene's hood-cloak-thing. HOWEVER. assuming your ru'an is based off of europe, you run into a similar-ish problem with tyrian purple, in that it is probably inaccessible to the average person---it would probably be imported into ru'an. perhaps from tu'la, which would have very interesting implications as to the relationship between tu'la and ru'an, and perceptions of the ru'anians who use indigo, especially after the tu'la invasion should you keep that in your rewrite. (maybe it could be a compromise between woad and tyrian purple?? perhaps??)
and that brings me to another thing!! what dye plants grow in ru'an and where? because that is a very important question that affects what colors your characters have access to. you can absolutely have naturally dyed greens and pinks. that is a thing that CAN exist with natural dye---i have seen it and i have done it---but it is dependent on what plants exist and where they're growing, like the indigo plant that i've mentioned.
assuming, again, that ru'an = europe. they would have access to madder (red) and weld (yellow---very bright yellow). disclaimer, my experience with naturally dyed green is with indigo. i've never worked with woad before. BUT. in theory. you should be able to dye something in weld and then dye it again in woad to get green. it's a slightly different process with indigo but that particular dye may or may not even be available in metelli anyways, so it doesn't really matter.
although. tangent about green in medieval-and-renaissance-ish europe. it was a wealthy people color, as you have to essentially dye the material twice when using natural dye. it was a way to flaunt your wealth without breaking sumptuary laws, which were established because the nobility really didn't like the new money tradesmen now being able to afford to "dress above their station" aka dress like the nobility. (i could go on about sumptuary laws but they essentially limited who could wear what and how much of a given material someone could use. like silk---you can only wear so much silk in your outfit if you aren't noble or whatever.) of course you don't have to use sumptuary laws, but i do think the implications of laurance (and cadenza) wearing green in this context would be fascinating.
okay so. about my claim that you can get naturally dyed pink. abandon all hopes of, like, hot pink at the door. BUT. a super light percentage of madder will give you, like, different shades of salmon pink. super pretty!! (you can find a picture of these pinks here https://blog.bindandfold.com/?p=570.)
see, when you dye something, the amount of time you have it in the dye bath doesn't typically matter? all that really matters is that you give the dye enough time to bond to the fiber you're dying, which is typically an hour (if you take out your fiber before the dye has enough time to bond to it, your color will fade. i have made this mistake. major bummer). what really matters is the WOF---the weight of fiber, or the percentage of dye material compared to the weight of the material you want dyed.
basically i would put less madder in my dye bath if i was trying to make pink, and more madder if i was trying to make a solid red, but both dye baths would need to sit for an hour to be colorfast and not fade.
also!! exhaust baths!! another way to get a lighter color (like pink)!! see, sometimes when you have a dye bath, there will still be dye particles leftover after you've run your first bath and taken your material out. you can (usually) still use this dye. you just put new fiber into it, and bam. we call this an exhaust bath---because the dye is "exhausted" . exhaust baths are always going to be lighter than the first bath, since they had less dye than the one that preceeded them. so long as the remaining dye particles have enough time to bond with the fiber, an exhuast bath should be just as colorfast as the first try. i've been able to get like, two or three dye baths out of the same pot of dye before. it works.
okay. i think that's all that i have in my brain. also i have definitely yapped on long enough. hope this was helpful!! good luck with your rewrite!!👍👍
when i’m trying to use a more plausible color scheme for everyone in my MCD rewrite (since it’s going to be set in a more underdeveloped time period, a lot of colors are going to be expensive/hard to find) and can’t decide what colors to give certain people 😭
im obviously gonna keep some of the original colors in the beginning (like Lord Burt wearing red because of its significance as a powerful color), but keep everyone’s else’s mostly plain. for example Nana won’t be an explosion of pink (although it will remain her favorite color), Aphmau won’t be wearing purple as often (the most common variation of the color was tyrian purple which took a very extensive amount of labor to make even one gram of the pigment. that, as well as the color being reserved for royalty), and Laurance won’t have as many green articles of clothing in the section of my rewrite portraying season two (the emerald green pigment was made from arsenic, which made it not only extremely toxic to produce but to wear as well as the skin would absorb the poison)
(i’m still debating about Dante and Garroth with their blue tones because it was a more common color amongst the poor people and was made with cheap, low quality dye, but Louis IX and Henry VIII started wearing it with other nobles and it became a color of high standing so…)
now this is also where I also come to a standstill because of these colors and what they used to represent. each Divine Warrior will have a color associated with them, which is where part of their symbolism will come from. however, I’m stuck on what color to give Irene
there’s a very brief clip somewhere I can’t remember when it appeared, but Irene was wearing a black two piece that seemed to be torn. I imagine this being something like her “first” outfit in the world so i’m not too worried about that one, but I’m more concerned about the one she wears when she’s portrayed
we see Irene wearing two cloaks from what I remember (my memory is garbage and I have yet to reach that far in anything). one of her cloaks was royal blue and the other is a lilac purple. the lilac purple would be a more difficult hue to achieve in the time period i’m reaching for, so either way i’m going to make the purple into a deeper shade.
i’m having such a war in my head about which color to choose for her, though. because both colors could signify who she is and i’m honestly debating just having different people give her different colors but I don’t know
on one hand, tyrian purple was a color reserved for royalty. using it could be used to show the high regard in which people in Ru’aun placed her. it could be used to signify their desire to have Irene rule as queen over the region before she diminished the monarchy and developed the Lord system instead. however, this color was made from a tiring process that required extensive amount of labor for barely anything to show the effort, and I feel as though the way to obtain the color doesn’t represent Irene the Matron
on the other hand, I feel as though a deeper blue pigment would be a better match. blue was original worn by peasants but the steady popularity it gained with nobility made it a more expensive and luxurious color for people that could afford it, as I previously said. this color I feel would fit better with her character to show that Irene came from humble beginnings and was put on a pedestal after her efforts for peace and becoming Lord of Scaleswind (which would be equal to blue becoming a color of nobility). the only problem with the blue is that the dye used by the peasants was low quality made from the woad plant that (from what i’ve seen) was dyed much lighter compared to the royal blue i’m talking about. i don’t know, maybe she got an upgrade at some point…
(can you tell i love the history behind colors)
(also if anyone has any other impactful information concerning colors please let me know i also actually love learning about it)
(and greatest apologies guys this is basically a yap post it has very little significance to anything)

Vivid Flowers and Crisp Spring Air
Gen, Aurora's pov, Flora has a major role, and Artemis shows up somewhat briefly. They've arrived in Flora's world just in time to see the flowers bloom.
For March of the Zeldas day 19
“Oh wow,” Aurora breathed as she stepped out of the portal. They’d just been in their world, which, well, it was sort of home, but it was kind of dreary.
This, wherever and whenever it was, was very far from dreary. The sun was shining brightly, the grass was an impossible shade of green and looked so refreshing, and there were flowers everywhere.
“Aww yes! I had hoped we’d land in my era in time to see the flowers!” Flora said, beaming as she turned to look at them. “Can we just stay here for a while? A lot of these are medicinal, and some are super strong pigments I can bring to Hateno to the dye shop to dye my clothes, and we can just relax for a bit!”
Aurora looked to Artemis hopefully, and she seemed to be considering it.
“Alright, we can stay here for a bit. It can’t really hurt, we’ve been going full steam ahead for a few weeks.” Artemis nodded decisively. “Try and stay within sight of at least one other person, alright?”
She got a chorus of agreements, and Aurora muttered her own before crouching down right where she was to look at the flowers. Maybe she could use some to try out for her paints? She was pretty sure some paints were made with flowers. Although they were probably usually dried. Could she even dry the flowers?
“Hey, Flora?” Aurora asked, a bit overwhelmed by all of the different kinds of flowers. “Which ones are the most heavily pigmented?”
Flora came over almost immediately, crouching down next to her. “You were trying to make paint, right? I’ll help you find good ones for that. Flowers that are super strongly pigmented actually mostly aren’t great for flower crowns, so it won’t interfere with plans to make flower crowns.”
Aurora actually didn’t know how to make a flower crown, she’d never had the chance. Maybe she could ask one of the others to show her.
Honestly, she wasn’t sure she’d seen this many flowers in her life, even before she’d gone to sleep and woke up to a ruined world. This was a lot.
“They all fill different ecological niches,” Flora narrated as she started picking flowers, showing them to Aurora. “The bright pigments I think are just to make them more attractive to things looking to pollinate them. This flower makes red, this one blue, and this one even though it looks red actually makes purple. Otherwise, most of them make the color they are. There’s another one that I don’t see right now that actually makes a nice blueish green. The flower is yellow though, it's so weird.”
Aurora blissfully allowed Flora’s rambling to wash over her, picking the right flowers and keeping track of them and their colors in her mind. Maybe she could ask Flora to help her dry them? Could her slate do that?
Maybe when she had enough. Eventually, she wouldn’t be able to come back here to collect flowers and would just have to survive on her own stash. She was already missing the paints she’d hopefully be able to make with access to all of these other worlds. Once she worked out how to make paint anyway.
“Hey, Flora?” Aurora asked when Flora paused talking to breathe.
“Yeah?”
“Do you know if we could dry the flowers? I’m not sure how to dry flowers.”
“I actually don’t really know either, I have some dried flowers in my slate from Paya, she enjoys drying flowers a lot, maybe we can collect a bunch and have her dry them for us? We can just collect them when they’re done drying.”
“That’d be cool, thank you Flora,” Aurora said, offering her collection to Flora, who put it into her slate along with all the other flowers she was collecting. “Are you sure it’s okay if we pick all these flowers?”
“We could never pick all of them, and the plants will bloom again soon anyway. Most plants here will bloom three to four times through the spring and summer, just to make sure they can spread as many seeds as possible. That’s why they’re the species that survived. They evolved to make sure they could take advantage of all the new empty lands.”
“Oh, that’s a relief. Thank you for telling me.”
“Of course.”
“Where are we anyway,” Aurora asked after a while, handing another bundle to Flora.
“Oh I probably should check, thanks for reminding me.” Flora stowed the flowers then swiped to the map part of her slate. “Oh! We’re near Tarry town! We can head there for the night! I’ve been meaning to check in on it.”
“Tarry town?” Aurora asked. She hadn’t heard of that one, and she thought Flora had brought them to all of her towns.
“It’s a small town on an easily defensible island with just one bridge to the mainland. During his quest Wild helped build it and bring people in to populate it. It doesn’t have a shrine very nearby, that shrine all the way up there on that hill is actually the closest one.” Flora pointed out a shrine on a hilltop that was fairly far away. “You can take the road, although it’s faster to just paraglide down. Wild was able to obtain one for me, so I can do it, but trying to get you all down wouldn’t be easy, so we’ll just take the road. More time consuming, but safer.”
“Safe is good,” Aurora agreed, shuddering at the thought of flying out into open space. That would be scary. Just a piece of cloth keeping her from falling and splattering against the ground. Even if Shadow could probably catch her, it was still scary.
“I think you’ll like the town,” Flora said, humming a little tune Aurora vaguely recognized as something Sheik had played the night before. “It’s small and friendly. I’m sure they’ll be overjoyed to see us.”
“That is nice,” Aurora said, handing her another bundle of flowers. Her stomach rumbled, and Aurora looked up at the sun, which was about right overhead. “It’s nearing lunchtime.”
“Oh yeah, look at that. We should have a picnic.”
“Picnic?” Aurora asked. She wasn’t familiar with that word, what was it?
“Wait you don’t know what a picnic is?” Flora seemed oddly concerned about this, which only got worse as Aurora shook her head. “We gotta have a picnic now. I bet some of the others haven’t had a picnic before.”
“Are they fun?” Aurora asked hesitantly.
“They’re the best.” Flora replied vehemently. “You’ll see.”
Aurora was sure of that. Flora seemed very enthusiastic about that.

Could I get the proxies (and slender) reacting to y/n dying her hair bright bright bright neon green? I think it would be hilarious. -Unus anon
Masky
"What the hell did you do to your hair, Joker?"
"exCUSE ME?!
He's going to love making fun of you until it either fades or you re-dye it out of desperation to end the torment.
So far Masky has come up with, Jared Leto Joker, Broccoli Head, Lizard Brain, and many more you wouldn't bother to hear.
After a few sessions of the silent treatment, Masky lets up on the name-calling but not the teasing.
"If you feed a haircut, I'll grab the weed cutter if you want."
He's very aggravating to be around, and he loves pissing you off until you attempt to wrestle him to the ground, which seems to be the only way he learns anything.
Tim, although slightly surprised by the change in color, isn't too obsessed with your new hairstyle.
Frankly, he doesn't care too much as long as you're happy with yourself.
Hoodie
Brian gives you a wide grin, "What is t h i s?"
"You don't like it?"
"No, no! I think it looks great on you, sweetheart!"
Brian isn't one to judge, he's been to film school which were full of people with very artistic personalities.
But, boy, is he surprised when you first walk out.
You actually saw him do a double take.
Brian will jokingly tease you about it, and ruffle your neon locks whenever he passes you.
Hoodie is more cruel, but more so to make himself laugh rather than being cruel. But it's a win-win either way.
His favorite reaction he got out of you is when he called you "Minecraft Slime" and you attempted to choke him out.
Failing of course, but it was the thought that counts.
Toby
"WOW! [Y/N]!!!!111!!!"
"Do you like it?"
"IT'S SO EXCITING!! YES!!!"
Toby is always super supportive of you, excluding the fact that he mostly likes this new hairstyle on you.
Toby makes he clear that it makes you look cool and more exciting. He absolutely loves it.
Were you expecting a bad reaction? Yes. And you're never going to get one with Toby around.
Toby will poke and tease a little bit, but it's never degrading.
He might even grab some of your leftover dye and paint his arm hair out of boredom.
Now, you can be a weird twinning couple!! It's normal for it to burn...right?
Slender
"What on earth have you done to your hair?"
"It's just dye! Do you like it?"
Slender will pause, and tucks a few loose strands back in place, "I believe it suits you, [Y/N]. I'm happy you have decided to express yourself." He says, placing a supportive hand on your shoulder.
Does he think it's strange? Yes.
But so are all of the other residents in this manor. Jeff has had rainbow hair before, Toby has had deep purple, and Clockwork has had a ginger phase not too long ago.
He's used to the constantly changing styles by now, and he doesn't mind as long as they're not hurting anyone or dyeing the animals.
"I could dye your hair next if you'd like."
"Very funny, [Y/N]."

I have decided against this. Fear not, though. I still have Smash stuff to talk about! See, I usually use the default colors! But there are some exceptions. And I'm gonna show you. If the same alt is in another Smash game, then unless otherwise stated I use them in that other game
Tumblr media
It's a shiny Pikachu with a choice band! What's not to love? Too bad it's only in Smash 4
Tumblr media
The fusion suit. It's got a cool color scheme, and it fits with Canon Samus so...
Tumblr media
American Mario! Yes I know it's a reference to NES golf but still
Tumblr media
Here's the first one that I only play in specific Smash games. Because in Ultimate, I use the first alt. But I do love this Fierce Deity alt
Tumblr media
THAT FLOWER IS SO CUTE!
Tumblr media
SPIKEY EARED PICHU! MY GIRL!!!!
Tumblr media
The good ole' unlicensed doctor alt. My headcanon is that he actually did really well in med school, but he wasn't allowed to graduate due to not being able to pay the student debt. So he's competent!
Tumblr media
Another one I only like in a specific Smash game. I only like this one in Brawl, where the hair is clearly darker than the default's hair. It's also a cool reference to the Link from the first The Legend Of Zelda, but in Smash 4 and Ultimate the hair is lighter and that makes the alt hard to tell apart from the default
Tumblr media
Since I am American, my default is NES R.O.B
I like Famicon R.O.B more
Tumblr media
SHINY CHARIZARD! I actually prefer the purple gen 2 shiny to the modern black one
Tumblr media
Oh boy. This...this is my favorite alt like, in the series. Partially because I would totally wear that color combo, and partially because, imagine that all but this alt were picked out by Palutena, and she let's him design his own. He gets the brightest colors he can find for his chiton, and even dyes his wings bright purple! That happy little smile! Such a child!
Also, it's a neat reference to the NES game. Now, I DESPISE that Ultimate made the colors less...well clashing. So I only use the alt in 4
Tumblr media
I like to imagine if the previous scenario happened, Dark Pit is like, "I'm making my own outfit and it'll be better than Pit!" And he tries to dye his wings bright red, but it comes out as this dark yet still clearly red red, due to the black wings. I hate what Ultimate did. The red is so faint in that game you can barely notice the wings aren't black! Though that's more an artstyle problem given the faded look of everything there (yes this was why I was originally gonna rant about Smash Artstyles)
Tumblr media
Claus deserved better. He should have lived. At least I can pretend to play as him
Tumblr media
She is EERILY similar to my Villager in City Folk! Only difference is I changed by hair to blue!
Tumblr media
Again, I don't like the Ultimate version due to how faded the blue it. But, it looks good super saturated and blue is my favorite color
Tumblr media
Oven. Mitts. Enough said
Tumblr media
I think the Wireframes look cool and are a cool reference
Tumblr media
She looks like a Nohr Noble. Given that Fates - Conquest is my favorite Fire Emblem game...
Tumblr media
She looks cool with Sothis' colors
Tumblr media
I like 8
Tumblr media
SHINY KITTY!
Tumblr media
Ah, Agent 3! I wish I could play as 4 or 8, but hey, 3 is cool too!
Tumblr media
I have no explanation I just prefer the school look to the cape and stuff
Tumblr media
Blue, and an alt from her game
Tumblr media
This is what the plants looked like in the first Super Mario Bros. game!
Tumblr media
I like the more saturated colors!
Tumblr media
OLD CARTOON!
Tumblr media
I always thought Enderman were so cool!
Tumblr media
...
Fight me
I had an idea
I wanna talk about Smash Bros artstyles
How they look?
How they affect alts and stages?
How the effect the overall vibe of the game?
How well they match the tone the game was going for?
Things like that
So um. After work expect some long posts

Campaign 2 Yarns
Explanation/Masterpost Campaign 1 YarnsCampaign 3, NPC, and Miscellaneous YarnsKnit Objects
Campaign 2 Yarns:
Tumblr media
(There was more; I either used it or gave it away. But more under the cut!)
Veth
Tumblr media
A 3 ply
Yellow is the same that’s used for the Caleb Yarn (Hidden Valley’s Bob’s Dandelions)
A very nice and colorful wool blend
it was inexpensive but I did have to listen to the seller’s sales pitch for her online classes to get it
I ended up thinking of that as ‘Felderwin’.
4 ounces of random llama in a hefty ziplock bag
Not sure where that came from.
Nott The Brave
Tumblr media
Retroactively decided Nott the Brave was the first yarn I ever spun
It’s both lumpy and ugly and yet incredibly charming
I am always proud of it.
Fjord
Tumblr media
Made with this absolutely gorgeous blue-green malabrigo rios
Malabrigo: gorgeous colors, great yarn, difficult fiber
Also bleeds all over
Anyway, great at being deceptive seems like a Fjord thing
Fractal Plied (because seashells, like the sea)
Thinner than you’d expect - laceweight
But a good amount of it.
Like, 800 yards of it
I was thinking of four plying it to get it up to, like, a fingering (still a very thin yarn) but was kind of done with this fiber at that point
Not a commentary on Fjord, 800 yards is just a lot and my hands were very green
Caduceus
Tumblr media
First part is this Malabrigo Nube that was this fantastic color. WIldbros get the same fiber!
This one also bled all over
Needed a lot of slow, careful handling
The other half was this magenta and white alpaca that I got on basis of softness alone
I just stuck my hand into the fiber and purchased it without a thought it was so soft
Like 5,000 baby rabbits
Would give good hugs
I don’t even like magenta
Anyway, initial attempt combination didn’t quite gel so I thought I’d overdye it with this a blue/grey
For whatever reason I assumed the malabrigo half wouldn’t take the dye
Mostly because it kept on bleeding all over me
Turns out that the fiber takes dye just fine (whoops)
Which is why this color scheme is very Subdued for Cad
Became a nice (cow)l and fingerless mitt set
Jester
Tumblr media
A bright blue with some darker tones to it
It’s acrylic! But soft and not horrible to spin ‘Faux Cashmere’ (from wildhare on etsy). A true trickster
A two ply - for duplicity
Became a baby hat and an ornament (see Finished Objects)
Yasha
Tumblr media
Took some black and white fiber, split it in half, then twisted/plied it against itself
Then took some purple, blue, and white fiber, and then twisted/plied it against itself
THEN PLIED THOSE TWO TOGETHER
It’s called a cable ply
It’s super strong and ropey (like Yasha)
The final result reminds me of a 90’s solo cup
Somehow perfect for the woman who smells like a crayon
I love that about her. Do not take this from me. She looks like a solo cup.
Beauregard
Tumblr media
Cobalt Soul Blues and Browns
Chain Plied (flurry of blows, chain attacks
Sport Weight, like a real jock
Done on a drop spindle, as it’s surprisingly good for meditation, and Beau’s surprisingly okay with stillness of mind
Caleb
Tumblr media
Started off with the yellow that’s the same as Veth (Hidden Valley Farms)
Got some one-off yarn from Hello Yarn Called Blaze- this reddish-brown
The third fiber was a red/orange/brown handpainted roving (Sweet Georgia, called ‘Phoenix Rising)
Then overdyed the whole thing with some orange to make it an amber color
Extremely pretty
Practically glowed
Looks like a flame flickering
A+ would do again
Made a scarf with it with Essek
Molly
Tumblr media
A weird one
Half this combination of red and blue fiber that looked like a sunbleached cubs fan
Also prepped so that instead of it moving from one color to the other, it had both colors side by side at all times?
Claimed to be made of corn silk? Partially corn silk? Not really sure
Dubious exotic origins seemed perfect for Molly
Other half was a perfectly normal lavender (from SweetGeorgia)
Fingering weight, because I never get tired of that joke.

I have a blue cotton fabric I want to use for something, but the color's too bright for what I want. Would adding gray dye help desaturate it?
Probably? It depends on a lot of things, but the biggest thing it's going to depend on is going to be if you're using actual gray dye, or if you're trying to use black dye and then not process it for as long in the assumption that it'll become gray. I've had to repeatedly re-learn that black dye minus processing time usually equals purple or red, not gray.
Technically, you can't desaturate something with dye, because dye adds pigment, and doesn't take it away. This is a distinction that no one but me cares about, because we all know what you mean.
However, gray probably isn't the best option if you just need to tone down the color. Color theory to the rescue again. Think about drawing with a marker on a piece of blue paper. If you use a red marker, it'll make purple. You use a yellow marker, it'll be green. If you use an orange marker, it'll turn brown, and if you use a purple marker, it'll turn a blue-toned purple. The same thing works with dye.
Tumblr media
This gets to an interesting question: what color is gray? Is your dye a blue-tone gray (cool gray) or a red tone gray (warm gray) or a yellow or green tone (french and ash gray, respectively). Gray mixes that way, too. If you mix blue and orange, you get brown. If you mix blue and orange-tone gray, you'll get a muddy result. If you mix blue and a blue-tone gray, you'll get a more muted blue. But there are a lot of colors that can be sold as gray dye, and not all of them are going to be clear about exactly what kind of gray they're looking at.

On the other hand, colors are colors. This is a bright blue background that I slapped a bunch of bright colors onto, and then set the blending mode to Darken Only. Fullscreen the image and use your fingers to cover up parts of each square, so that you can see small bits of each gradient. See if you like a color here that better fits what you'd ideally like to be.

And here's what those original colors are, when it's not set to Darken Only. All of these bright colors were able to change the color of the fabric, without really darkening it. If you liked a color somewhere in the gradient of the bottom square, you can try putting yellow dye onto your blue fabric to see if you like that result. This is a simulation and isn't a real test, but it's sort of a vague guide of what to try.
Also, when you're playing with dye mixing, do a swatch test before you dye the entire fabric! A lot of dyes, including the dyes that are already in your blue fabric, will have undertones of color that aren't super apparent in the original version. Sometimes you'll do a swatch test and discover that your colors just really don't mix well, or that two colors do mix really well and you didn't think they would.
I talk a bit more about color theory in this post, where I talk about why adding blue to yellowed fabric makes our eyes think it's white.
