Campaign 2 Yarns
Explanation/Masterpost Campaign 1 YarnsCampaign 3, NPC, and Miscellaneous YarnsKnit Objects
Campaign 2 Yarns:
Tumblr media
(There was more; I either used it or gave it away. But more under the cut!)
Veth
Tumblr media
A 3 ply
Yellow is the same thatā€™s used for the Caleb Yarn (Hidden Valleyā€™s Bobā€™s Dandelions)
A very nice and colorful wool blend
it was inexpensive but I did have to listen to the sellerā€™s sales pitch for her online classes to get it
I ended up thinking of that as ā€˜Felderwinā€™.
4 ounces of random llama in a hefty ziplock bag
Not sure where that came from.
Nott The Brave
Tumblr media
Retroactively decided Nott the Brave was the first yarn I ever spun
Itā€™s both lumpy and ugly and yet incredibly charming
I am always proud of it.
Fjord
Tumblr media
Made with this absolutely gorgeous blue-green malabrigo rios
Malabrigo: gorgeous colors, great yarn, difficult fiber
Also bleeds all over
Anyway, great at being deceptive seems like a Fjord thing
Fractal Plied (because seashells, like the sea)
Thinner than youā€™d expect - laceweight
But a good amount of it.
Like, 800 yards of it
I was thinking of four plying it to get it up to, like, a fingering (still a very thin yarn) but was kind of done with this fiber at that point
Not a commentary on Fjord, 800 yards is just a lot and my hands were very green
Caduceus
Tumblr media
First part is this Malabrigo Nube that was this fantastic color. WIldbros get the same fiber!
This one also bled all over
Needed a lot of slow, careful handling
The other half was this magenta and white alpaca that I got on basis of softness alone
I just stuck my hand into the fiber and purchased it without a thought it was so soft
Like 5,000 baby rabbits
Would give good hugs
I donā€™t even like magenta
Anyway, initial attempt combination didnā€™t quite gel so I thought Iā€™d overdye it with this a blue/grey
For whatever reason I assumed the malabrigo half wouldnā€™t take the dye
Mostly because it kept on bleeding all over me
Turns out that the fiber takes dye just fine (whoops)
Which is why this color scheme is very Subdued for Cad
Became a nice (cow)l and fingerless mitt set
Jester
Tumblr media
A bright blue with some darker tones to it
Itā€™s acrylic! But soft and not horrible to spin ā€˜Faux Cashmereā€™ (from wildhare on etsy). A true trickster
A two ply - for duplicity
Became a baby hat and an ornament (see Finished Objects)
Yasha
Tumblr media
Took some black and white fiber, split it in half, then twisted/plied it against itself
Then took some purple, blue, and white fiber, and then twisted/plied it against itself
THEN PLIED THOSE TWO TOGETHER
Itā€™s called a cable ply
Itā€™s super strong and ropey (like Yasha)
The final result reminds me of a 90ā€™s solo cup
Somehow perfect for the woman who smells like a crayon
I love that about her. Do not take this from me. She looks like a solo cup.
Beauregard
Tumblr media
Cobalt Soul Blues and Browns
Chain Plied (flurry of blows, chain attacks
Sport Weight, like a real jock
Done on a drop spindle, as itā€™s surprisingly good for meditation, and Beauā€™s surprisingly okay with stillness of mind
Caleb
Tumblr media
Started off with the yellow thatā€™s the same as Veth (Hidden Valley Farms)
Got some one-off yarn from Hello Yarn Called Blaze- this reddish-brown
The third fiber was a red/orange/brown handpainted roving (Sweet Georgia, called ā€˜Phoenix Rising)
Then overdyed the whole thing with some orange to make it an amber color
Extremely pretty
Practically glowed
Looks like a flame flickering
A+ would do again
Made a scarf with it with Essek
Molly
Tumblr media
A weird one
Half this combination of red and blue fiber that looked like a sunbleached cubs fan
Also prepped so that instead of it moving from one color to the other, it had both colors side by side at all times?
Claimed to be made of corn silk? Partially corn silk? Not really sure
Dubious exotic origins seemed perfect for Molly
Other half was a perfectly normal lavender (from SweetGeorgia)
Fingering weight, because I never get tired of that joke.

Final Evaluation
For this project of ā€œThe Futureā€ we were given to ā€˜clientsā€™; Regen South West (energy poverty) and The Devon Wildlife Trust(marine conservation) decided to go with the latter. I chose to take on Devon Wildlife Trusts brief instead of Regen because the ideas flowed more. While thinking out something to produce for Regen I was a a stop and no ideas came hence the reason for choosing Devon Wildlife Trust. When starting this project I had many ideas but none of them seemedā€¦right. One of many ideas which was really cliched was to go to a old quarry or mining site and take some photos; then in post add HDR. Again it didn't feel right. I also had the idea to create a little mini scene a little like Slinkachu with a polar bear and a puddle with melting ice caps however, I wasnā€™t feeling it and it seemed like it had all been done before. I was adamant that I was going to shoot landscapes for this project so I did some research on different landscape photographers. I started looking into my first idea of the quarries and found Edward Burtynsky; famous for his landscapes of oil quarries, mines , etc. Since I had no other ideas at the time this was what I thought I wanted to focus on. He had some great photos they were less beautiful than your typical landscape photo but I think that was the point of it. Another landscape photographer I looked at was Alexander Deschaumes; a french landscape photographer. I was really inspired by his work. It was similar but also different to the typical landscape photograph. They were very dramatic and I think thats what I liked about them. From them my ideas developed and to make the photos a bit different I thought that I could use digital art to make them more interesting. I haven't used digital art over a photo before so I did some research trying to find an artist who has and came across Sam J Miller. He is famous as a writer but also does art along side with the writing and I found that he had done what I was looking at if a bit different. Heā€™d tell stories and use characters to create his pictures while mine would be much more simple connected with the brief. Looking back I think that I maybe couldā€™ve researched more or more in depth, compared to my last project of ā€œThe Othersā€ I did a lot of research about the culture etc. so this time I think thatā€™s what's lacking.
My final piece isnā€™t a series of images but all of them put together into a gif. I chose to do this because I think itā€™s more interesting to look at as well as making it more clear about what Iā€™m trying to convey with these photos. It tells a mini story within the gif; as the more plastic waste appears on the beach the less vibrant and colourful the world becomes in a summary, itā€™s killing the world. I think the images I finally produced show what Iā€™m trying to say very well. Now that I look back I think that maybe I couldā€™ve done a burst of shots as the wave was going and then the wave would move with the increasing amount of bottles but I know for next time, also I don't think many people will be focused on that and will look more at the increasing of bottle appearing on the beach.
There was a lot more maths involved in this project. Looking at panoramicā€™s and the aspect ratios being one of them as well as always adding in graphs to push forward information in an easier way to process. Thereā€™s also the statistics given by the two clients within their presentations. Of course there is the math that is always being used when taking the photographs making sure to get a perfect photo by manipulating the apertures, shutter speeds and ISOā€™s; there will always be this aspect of math within photography even though it isn't really noticeable itā€™s still there and being used. Looking at my past projects this included iā€™m thinking that my english skills could do with some improving. Before starting this course it had been a while since fully using my english writing skills and they look like they have deteriorated in that time. Iā€™ve chosen to start reading more books to increase my illiteracy in hopes of improving on my english language skills.
During this project there where a lot of new things I learned, a lot of new camera and editing techniques including moving image which I was aware of before but never really tried. To start with we looked at adding HDR onto an image. I really liked this and I think that for some landscapes it really adds some depth to them. Thinking back now I shouldā€™ve tried using it on my final image to see if it worked or not. There was the added workshop of learning how to so panoramic shots which was interesting. I previously never really knew that you could take panoramicā€™s on a DSLR but it was rather simple; putting the images together was simple too and though it didn't work the first time I did it and the second one was a bit off If I tried it enough times Iā€™m positive that they would turn out ok. The moving image(4D element) was interesting to look at and I will defiantly be including time lapses in future projects, I was more into the time-lapses rather than the stop motions; to me time-lapses are just more interesting to look at and time-lapses seems too clunky to me even thought thats how they're supposed to look itā€™s just unappealing to me. When learning how to do time-lapses I didn't know that you could do it on a DSLR camera similarly with the panoramicā€™s. Iā€™ve done time-lapses on my phone before and are substantial as well as using a DSLR to capture them. In the long run I guess that a phone is just more convenient but if doing a very long time-lapse of something along the lines of a full day, a DSLR would be the much better option. Iā€™ve managed to capture screen during this project, I did some research into the best program to use for free and found that QuickTime has a built in screen capture. It does slow things down slightly but not enough to be disruptive. Once the screen capture had finished I had over two hours of footage; the original plan was to just speed it up which is what I did however, I still had over 15 minutes of footage on the best speed, any faster and it was hard to keep up with anything happening. So because of this iā€™m not going to be able to upload it to my blog since tumblr only allows for under 5 minutes to be uploaded at one. So I think iā€™ll just cut it into 4 minute segments and upload them as parts.
Looking at the character matrix; there are always that I can improve myself and not just in my work. Since this project was very individual I think I enjoyed that a bit more. I don't really like relying on people as most of the time I have they haven't provided. I like working alone most of the time and I know thats impossible so working with people sometimes can be a nice change. I understand everything in the character matrix and I like to think that I follow them. I defiantly need to improve on the communication section on the matrix just because I do without really discussing it, hence why I like individual projects. For the next project however, (which I think is the final major project) Iā€™m going to try to do some portrait one way or another depending on the topic so will be working with models; thisā€™ll help in the communication part of the matrix next time. The stress for this project was minimal and I felt like I was on top of everything, I shouldā€™ve probably done the photoshoot a bit sooner or a week before, The reason for the last photoshoot was because I had no way of getting to the location till that certain day. The amount of effort put into this work was more than the other in terms of final photos. The research was a little lacking this project and maybe shouldā€™ve done more.
I enjoyed the workshops this project unlike some of the previous ones as they were very informative and included things that helped develop my skills; learning new techniques I can apply to my own personal photography as well and future projects. To start with I thought this project would be really dull since the topic was ā€œThe Futureā€ and focused on a theme on environment, I came up with a few ideas but then we got two clients and none of my ideas worked with the brief so I had to crap them and start from scratch. It wasnā€™t till I was finished with my final product that the whole thing came together and I felt that it was an ok project. Iā€™m pleased with the final product and think it came out well; there were a few things that Iā€™d change like said previously. Next time I really want to work on my final photo making it a nice piece of photography as well as the research side; iā€™m going to try to attempt to research a range of artists not just photographers. I will also push to improve my english writing skills on top of everything and use more diverse language within my evaluations.
