Modern crystal healing: It opens your ~chakras~ you will attract ~abundance~ you will ~connect with the universe~
Medieval crystal healing: This shit makes you invisible, stops your periods from hurting, and makes your husband love you.
#chatter#Yes those are all taken from real medieval descriptions of crystals.#I can't remember the last one but the first two are topaz and carnelian.#I prefer older crystal healing sources I will not lie.#Its the fact that they're less vague and more confident about their assumptions.#I have read modern (70s) crystal healing books and they are INCOMPREHENSIBLE.#The thing about these books from the 70s is that if you follow the citation chain of modern books they all lead back to them.#I don't know how you could get any useful information from Healing “diamonds are so strong they cause cancer” Stoned.#Want medieval rock information?#Hildegarde von Bingen's Physica and Albert the Great's De Mineralibus.#English translations: Priscilla Throop and Dorothy Wyckoff respectively because I've read those.#Physica includes a lot more than crystals and Throop's translation is easy to read so I recommend it in general.#Wyckoff's De Mineralibus contains a lot of interesting footnotes that explain what Albert could've been referring to.#Because shockingly in a society without ways to definitively test minerals sometimes every green rock is an emerald.#Bonus: Want some Roman crystal knowledge? Pliny the Elder's Natural History volume 11.#||#witch#witchblr#witch memes#witchcraft#crystal witch#crystals#witch meme

rating for this is how you lose the time war: meh
#by all accounts i think i should have liked it?#and certainly it wasnt bad (it was no beowulf for cretins)#but it was just so...#okay im sorry if you liked it but#it was so up its own ass i could barely get through it#for a story that is literally just two characters talking to each other it had shockingly little characterization#theyre literally fucking clones of each other like the authors just wanted to wax poetic for 200 pages and forgot to actually write a story#its a novella at best and i think it would have benefitted from being an actual novel#and from being written in a completely different style because this just. it didnt work. its supposed to be a character driven piece#but because you spend so little time with the characters actually doing anything you never *actually* get to know them#like the story keeps telling you that one works hard and fast and the other works slow and thorough#but they never actually do anything that communicates that in a meaningful way?#so instead theyre both just hypercompetent english majors who kill people#anyway thats all i have to say about that

I do think an ideal translation team would need to have at least three people, and only two of them absolutely *must* speak both languages.
You need someone who's better at the original language but speaks the target language (to identify subtleties and cultural references), you need someone who is better at the target language but speaks the original (to make sure the initial translation makes sense), and you need a proofreader who has some expertise in prose in the target language (to make sure the concerns of the first two are being met in the final draft, and determine if there are any cases where a better-fitting word in the target language fits for words with multiple definitions)
and all three of these people need to be in some kind of communication with each other, back and forth until all parties can come to some consensus.
#which is to say: lady. the fact that the woman on the bird site doesn't speak Japanese is not the gotcha you think it is either.#sometimes shockingly you have to work with other people whose skillsets don't entirely overlap with yours to do a good job#and yes your best possible translation job is absolutely going to need a prose person holy shit#Like. Look. Go play the english version of any of the most recent SRWs and then any Ace Attorney.#Then tell me which one seems more polished.#like obviously someone who doesn't speak the origin language can't do a translation *on their own*#but holy shit this person is taking that sentiment far beyond where it can be considered arguing in good faith!#ignore Morg#fan wank#Morg does the classic ''your argument is so flawed it's giving me secondhand embarrassment'' bit

bro you ever watched life on mars (uk) and/or ashes to ashes, its class tv, highly recommend
For a Midwestern Gen Z American there is actually a surprisingly high chance I would've watched a moderately obscure Brit mid-2000s drama series but no, I've never seen either. May check em out though!
#ask#anon#tv#shockingly it's not bc i had a british phase in high school or whatever#my mom's always been into english media and 2/3 of my extended family lives in south england so. it happens

I got to pick the pizza night movie tonight so I went with Yaksha. My husband said "Sure. Which dude are you watching it for?" I couldn't figure out how to succinctly explain so I told him "Park Jinyoung. He's my emotional support twink du jour."
#not a brilliant film#but all i ask of shootemups is shooting and running#and I got that so I enjoyed it#with bonus lizard#unmoving face girl from adamas#evil mom from Love in Contract#and Ancient Goddess Lady from Goblin#lots of familiar faces#some ok chinese from the koreans#some shockingly good english from adamas reporter#i am not equipped to evaluate anyone's japanese

I finally tried VOICEVOX and uh. My many years in my youth making TALKLOIDs in UTAU paid off.
#there are exactly two tutorials I saw to help folks do English speech and neither of them account for the editing#you can edit the sounds in each syllable and it's shockingly easy to do English speech with it#giving me this power over Zundamon is being used for pure evil I'm making him be a little shit

duolingo has gotten me to be able to read swedish at. cefr b1 level. and thats it
#do NOT use duolingo to learn a new language.#ok actually i think thats not too bad considering i knew literally no swedish and also wasnt studying it anywhere else#but. you cannot rely on duolingo is what im saying.#you will reach a point where u need to learn from somewhere else#do not even fucking ask how much i can produce/speak. its even worse hdbgsdsfvgbgb#the reason the level is so specific is because i have a book that is labelled a2-b1 and shockingly. im able to read most of it#with no real difficulty. but it does take me approximately one million years longer than reading in english#which. duh. but it still pisses me off lmao

my favorite part of cowboy bebop is the lengthy sequence of spike falling on his ass in the intro that i watch in full every time
#my Real favorite part is the shockingly amazing job the english dub team did. every voice is distinct and fits the tone perfectly#but this is a close second

this year i really had a module called "british culture" &i got my best grade on it out of all of them this semester
#wooed the corrector/maybe my professor if he was the one doing the correction bu laying out my Television Interest faxxxxx#that were in the textbook we had to read now i know so much about those Isles & i hate the english so much#& i am scotland & ireland biggest fan#i also found the contents of my textbook in some chinese learning(?) website that looked a million years old#like for chinese people who were probably going to the UK to learn about it & its history ETC#the reason why i even retained so much is because i got hooked by the mentions of my TV Interest sprinkled in & it developed from there#like cheese in a mouse trap#shockingly the most i retained is the history bit starting from the iron age to like now ( well the late 90s/2000s anyway )#my professor was probably like wow she really did read the textbook. which i did but only because of the Mentions here & there#otherwise i would not really GAF as much as i did#i am physically incapable of caring about anything unless it is tangentially related to whatever my interest is#which is why i graduated highschool by a miracle from the Heavens last year because i literally had nothing but my Interest#in my mind no matter what i tried especially during prep days. i graduated with a 10/20 flat BTW that is 10.00 ... Trve Miracle

Ive been playing lord of the rings online again for nostalgia reasons. Fairly simple gameplay, a little retro. General community vibe is a bunch of nerds over 50 who probably literally speak elvish and get grumpy if you call it elven. Generally praised for being lovingly tolkein-y.
Which is great! Until the subreddit you go to for guides has several people unprompted doing the 'the amazon show was bad but especially because it featured "Blacks"' and then the next quest you do ingame after seeing that is... an epilogue to the book plotline which is inexplicably a seasonal event everybody is invited to do annually instead of part of the main story which follows the plot of the books and epilogues... which is aragorn and arwen's wedding, played out in full. Which is cute. And the guests and crowd are like, every single major NPC from the main story! Which is cool! Except every single fucking one of them is white. A crowd that exists nowhere good on earth.
And you realise why the subreddit is like that and how everybody's absolutely seeped in this ultra english-1950s fantasy world but at least when it was text you could fill in the gaps yourself because jolkein probably wasn't actively intentionally being a racist and explicitly ensuring every single one of his polite little old fashioned mans was explicitly described as only white. But when the game artists, designing the versions of the minor rolkein characters between the game launch in like 2006 and this wedding scene in like 2013, at every single turn portrayed them as specifically, actively, only, explicitly white... jesus fucking christ you can see why this fostered a community which is happy to rant about "Blacks" uncontested and suddenly the whole thing feels a lot less cozy forever.
Edit: upon inspection the peejack movies were in fact just as bad
#much of the aesthetic is closely based on the peejack films which also had this issue iirc#but even they i dont think were quite so absolutely stunningly shockingly uniform about it?#and again the patches to this game have 20 fucking years on even the films yet alone the 70 since the books#a different company took over in 2016 and i cant speak for what their content has been like bc its all high level#just this wedding quest is reasonably recent yknow#and it feels like devs... either current or former... are courting the absolute worst of the 'hardline' tolkers#which becomes increasingly difficult to defend the further removed it is from an elderly english professor in the 1950s.
