I really like how Whitney's jewish convert status was handled in The Curse and I'm sad to see articles where writers just reveal their biases against jewish converts while writing about the show like man u missed the point and im side eyeing u.
#seeing articles like 'whitney is wearing judaica and converting for sympathy/to feel oppressed' like first of all...#her magen david is so fucking tiny i couldn't see it until pointed out in the episode where she argues with her parents#it is revealed that she is already converted so like. thats a huge process dude u dont just convert to feel special#yes whitney has issues and is oblivious to her privilege as a white women with her background#and that is a big focus but like. her being a jewish convert isn't like some scheme??#and she is accepted by the jewish people in her life and the only people shown to not be accepting of her jewish conversion are her parents#who we r not supposed to agree with#and that happens in a point in the show where whitney is having character developments and we start seeing#the multifaceted parts of characters#its rlly good okay and im so mad at people missing the point grrrr#like theres literally a scene where she is feeling insecure abt not being born jewish and asher tells her#hey just because you weren't born jewish doesnt mean youre any less jewish than me#like she has many flaws but her being a jewish convert isnt one of them she just happens to be a jewish convert#and the show is very much about jewish guilt and privilege#and perspective. perception of self vs the perception others have#the curse tv show#ramblings

How To Write Romantic Relationships [MASTERPOST]
How do you balance between having emotional and meaningful without also having sappy and cliche?
How do you organically incorperate romance to the plot without having too force it in?
Don't fret my romantically inexperienced little writer! I'm here to help!
A) Make It Meaningful
Look, you can put in all the effort and still have readers not give a f$ck about the romance.
Why is there romance? Is it to create conflict? Illustrate a character's flaws? Is it a fun dynamic?
Make characters individually interesting. Your readers should understand why a character has fallen in love or you will have a riot on your hand! Remember when your favorite character fell in love with the equivalent of cardboard? Not fun. Remember: FLAWS!
The characters should be physically attracted to each other. It's pretty awkward having a romance where one character is just supressing disgust for the other.
The characters should feel emotionally connected.
Unless this is the main focus of the relationship, the characters should share core, fundamental beliefs. They can express these beliefs in different ways but it's awkward trying to ship pacifist x murderer.
Characters either need to share the same level of critical thinking ability or be willing to fall in love with an idiot. By the way, you don't love idiot x smart, you love emotional x stoic, reckless x reserved, or emotionally intelligent x logical.
B) The Meet-Cute Or Meet-Hideous
Now you might be saying, "but my dynamic is "friends/enemies to lovers"! Not strangers to lovers"!
Cool. You still have to understand how they met initially whether that was 5 minutes ago, 5 months ago, or 5 years ago. How two or more characters meet can influence first impressions, expectations for the relationship, and what these characters know about each other.
If two people met with A thinking B is an angel and B thinking A is the most boring person alive, that's a meeting that's definitely going to influence each other's expectations for their relationships and for each other.
Then, if you are writing a couple who met before the beginnings of this story, you also need to investigate their "re-meeting". This re-meeting demonstrates how the relationship is between characters.
Is there tension? Are they breaking apart? Are they meeting after a period seperated?
For strangers to lovers, where characters meet in canon and not pre-canon, a writer needs to focus on the meeting.
What are their first impressions? What is the environment around them? How is everyone feeling? What's the initial dynamic?
Common Pitfalls:
Love at First Sight. Unless you have a story where you are switching between the love interest's perspective, then the only way the audience is going to fall in love with this character is through the protag. And while the protag can fall in love at the blink of an eye, the reader can't. If your audience isn't invested in the characters, that's a problem.
Boring Meeting. Unless the entire point of the meeting is that it's mundane, try to give the meeting significiance.
Lack Of Characterization. Writers often copy the standard rom-com meeting but it does a disservice to your characters. Distrusting characters won't fall in love immediately. Reserved characters won't leave their routine for anyone. Let the meeting be guided by the characters.
C) Romantic Chemistry
In order to make a couple romantically compatible, their traits need to complement each others.
Readers tend to implicitly see the potential two characters could have if they just got together. Having two characters with opposing but balancing characteristics could satisfy this thirst.
Readers understand that a character battling depression is more likely to thrive with someone who provides benefits in relation to the depression whether it's compassion, open-mindedness, or perceptiveness.
D) Conflict
All relationships need conflict! This type of conflict tends to be man vs self, man vs man, or man vs society
Characters are either struggling with their own characters flaws, the external threat of another character, or the interference of society.
Common Pitfalls:
Lack Of Themes. Let the themes you are working with inspire what type of conflict impact the relationship. Don't throw in a plot twist or an inorganic cliche.
Lack Of Grounding. Authors can be so focused on the spectacle of a grand fight that they can loose their characters and the grounded experience of an unstable relationship.
Lack Of Characterization. Whenever authors grab a random conflict, they risk a character acting outside of their parameters which make the move feel shoehorned in.
Lack Of Justification. Don't have the conflict show up out of nowhere! Write little moments where something seems off. Then when these little things pile up, it won't feel shocking but justified.
Lack Of Punishment. Characters shouldn't come out of these moments without questioning their entire existence. Have them re-evaluate their beliefs, expectations, and actions.
Lack Of Power. Give your love interest and your protagonist the chance to air out their grievances. Don't let your characters suffer in silence. Call these characters out on their bs.
E) Actions In Love
Everyone has their own ways of expressing love, so donāt assume that thereās only one right way to write about it.Ā Some characters show their love through physical acts of intimacy such as holding hands and kissing. Some characters compliment. Others show it through grand romantic gestures. Others are more subtle.
Try to weave these little acts of sincerity throughout all of the scenes where your two lovebirds are in love.

š: The Semantics of The Orange Side
Explaining his function, understanding his role in the narrative, and debunking/dissecting common notions about the Orange Side.
To be honest, this essay wasĀ inevitable. I've had thoughts about Orange brewing since 2020, but only recently has it developed into something more concrete. For the longest time, most meta surrounding Orange began with theories about his role as a side, then extended towards narrative and side mechanics later on. I, for one, have been a victim of this pattern.Ā
Then, I realized that asking who Orange is is a terrible opener for theories.
There are many important questions glossed over if we start that way. For example, what is Orange's role in the overarching theme of combating black-and-white thinking? What does it mean for Orange to be a side? Who is he in the context of the Dark Sides? There are many crucial things to consider when it comes to predicting who Orange is, and I feel like concrete theories can only be made if we can establish the semantics of how Orange works.
This essay definitely won't be perfectā this is literally my second draftā but I will try my best making it in a way that flows, somehow. Some sections will discuss general ideas I have, some will try to dissec popular preconceived notions to reorient our logic surrounding Orange. As always, I'm open to discussion! My words aren't gospel.
Important notes: All mentions of Thomas refer to him as a character. Moreover, I acknowledge that Remus is a flawed depiction of intrusive thoughts. Technically, he acts more of a mix of intrusive thoughts, forbidden creativity, and impulsive thoughts. Because of this, when I talk about Remus in the context of his role, please be assured that I am talking about all his functions at once, not just intrusive thoughts.Ā
(Full essay under the cut! I worked hard on this, so I'd definitely appreciate the read. <3)
i. Orange as a Dark Side
The ways fans have characterized and defined Orange has always seemed to be rooted in their perception of what being a āDarkā Side is. That isā they are edgy, and somewhat suppressed. They are more āmorally questionableā compared to the rest. More fics would even go as far as depicting Orange as morally black, in that he has no role in the narrative other than being a stirring force of conflict; a villain that needs to be defeated.
It is unfortunate to see such a surface level perspective on who the āDarkā Sides are and what they mean as an oppositional force to the āLightā Sides.
My stance on the āDarkā and āLightā sides has always been the same (if you read my past essays, you'll know). Like what Logan said in CLBG, the labels are arbitrary because no side can be argued to be āgoodā or ābadā. Although, it would be a complete lie for me to say there's no distinction. Rather, Thomasā black-and-white thinking literally created one. But the distinction does not lie within the sidesā morals, rather it lies in how big their influence is on Thomas. Because the āLightā Sides are welcomed, Thomas will entertain their contributions more than the sides Thomas considers as ābadā or ātabooā.
In my opinion, Orange being morally black makes no sense in a series that is a.) thematically focused on dismantling black-and-white thinking, and b.) a man vs. self conflict. The villain is the problem of Thomas not being able to cope with his mental struggles properly. It would be odd to blame a portion of his brain as the evil of all evils. Although, I'd like to clarify that while Orange most likely wouldn't be morally black, it wouldn't be a surprise to me if he is just as dubious and mischievous as the other āDarkā Sides. After all, if they are the most suppressed sides, they would have to stick to unconventional tactics (aka looking scary) to get Thomasā attention.
I'll explain more later when I get into what I think Orange actually does as a side. For now, I want to focus on Orange in the context of the āDarkā Sides, because I genuinely think it's an overlooked idea! While nothing is explicitly confirmed, the āDarkā Sides are implied to know something the other characters and we, the audience, don't know about.Ā
Janus and Remus share this sense of meticulousness. They always feel like they're scheming something. Janus, for example, took his time from CLBG to SVS.R to successfully impart to Thomas that acting out of self-interest isn't the worst thing in the world, especially if your mental health is crumbling. Remus is even in on this plan, although his motivations for assisting Janus arenāt actually explicitly expressed yet. Even if Remus wanted to challenge Logan's self-restraint in WTIT to prove how much it was harming Thomasā long-term mental health, we still don't know if Remus is doing it out of care for Thomas, or justā¦ ācus. Either way, it's important to know that whatever Remus is doing seems to point to the same direction Janus is going, which is to break Thomasā black-and-white thinking.
Assuming Orange is another āDarkā Side, it feels crucial to understand who Orange is in the context of this undisclosed plan. More than anything, because the āDarkā Sides want to be heard, it would make sense if they unionize to achieve that goal together. If they dismantle Thomasā horrid perception of them, then all three of them would benefit. Thus, it would make no sense for Orange, if he were not morally black, to act solely out of individual interest. Yes, the āDarkā Sides seem to be introducing themselves one by one, but I feel like that's because a.) narratively, it's to pace, b.) it would scare Thomas for three strangers to pop up to him only for them to be shunned as a collective by the āLightā Sides, and c.) Janus and Remus seem to be performing specific roles in this overarching plan, so while they work separately, it's mostly for the same cause.
So, what does that mean, exactly? Like I said, the āDarkā Sides have an overall goal of being heard, strengthening Thomasā mental wellbeing, and breaking his black-and-white thinking. If my theory is correct in assuming each āDarkā Side has a specific role for this plan, then pinpointing Janus and Remusā roles may help us factor out Orange's role.
Here's what I deduced: Janus is there as some kind of soft launch, to set the principle. Janus mirrors Patton in that sense, although in the opposite direction. He breaks apart Thomasā preconceived notions of the world and bandages it with better, more nuanced foundations. On the other hand, Remus somewhat acts like an alarm clock. While not all his contributions are worthwhile, his mere presence is a reminder that something has to be done. In the series, it's to cater to his deteriorating mental health. He checks if the principles Janus provides aren't being followed, and makes a good fucking clamor about it if it doesn't.
Orange, I'd argue, serves as a means for Thomas to externalize these principles. It would make sense that the last thing Thomas would need to do is to put everything into action. Janus points out how one can be disenfranchised, Remus points out when he is being disenfranchised, and Orange ensures Thomas can express his discomfort when he is disenfranchised. Makes sense, right?
Speaking of externalization.
ii. Personal and Narrative Purpose
If youāre a fan that pre-dates the release of WTIT, you're well-acquainted with the idea that Orange represents Rage or Wrath. This theory came about in cahoots with an old notion that each āDarkā Side needs to have a āLightā Side counterpart, especially if you share complementary colors. Thus, many people assumed that Orange is Loganās foil. Consequently, most interpretations of Orange depict him as emotion-centric, specifically Rage, as thatās what most people assume is an oppositional force against logic. Moreover, because a portion of Loganās arc revolves around accepting oneās emotions, it would make sense if Orange, as an emotion-centric side, would be part of that. Weāve gotten two hints from the series itself that confirms this: 1.) a fight sequence in SVS.R showing ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½Blinding Rageā as one of Thomasā attacking options, and 2.) the infamous orange eyes in WTIT that appeared when both Thomas and Logan felt angry simultaneously.Ā
Whatās funny is, if you really think about it, we literally only have two pieces of evidence that point to this widely accepted fan theory. Although, unlike the previous section, Iām more inclined to actually believe these theories because itā¦ does make sense! Especially narrative-wise. At the moment, miscommunication amongst the sides are at an all-time high. This is mostly because each side refuses to express their thoughts, especially since theyāre at the midst of a complete paradigm shift in terms of morality and principles. Everythingās just a little too fragile, and it does not help that Thomasā mental health is also at the brink. After SVS.R, the sides have acknowledged Thomas is on edge, but theyāre still doing nothing concrete to actually fix it.
WTIT is my favorite episode of the series because it encapsulates the entire conflict so well. While Logan isnāt perfect, much of the useful suggestions he provided since DWIT never last past the moment he suggested them. Did Thomas ever see a therapist? Not really. Did Thomas find someone to talk about his issues with? Doesn't seem like it. Is Thomas taking his time with his mental health recovery? Nope. More than anything, the āLightā Sides and Thomas are very reactionary towards their problems. Itās even worse when you consider that Thomas is opting to pursue a relationship in the middle of this mess. WTIT showing us Thomas getting irrationally angry at Nico for not replying to his texts isā¦ an interesting Chekhovās Gun for future episodes, lemme tell you that.
Now, why am I relaying all this? Itās mostly to prove that something, or someone, needs to snap. There are grievances between the sides and Thomas that they are consciously suppressing that need out. Roman, Logan, and Thomas, specifically, need some sort of outlet for their frustrationsā a way to justify them, in a sense. Loganās eyes glowing orange while he snapped at Remus speaks so loudly of what Orange may offer. Externalization, justice, ācathartic release,ā as my friend Orb (@orbmanson7) put it. Presently, Orange as an externalizing force is needed so they can actually do something about this damn issue!Ā
And if not, I also see Orangeās role similarly to Remusā. As Iāve explained earlier, Remusā presence acts as an alarm clock for Thomas to be aware of his deteriorating mental health. If Orange isnāt there to assist in an all-encompassing externalization of a side or Thomasā deepest grievances, the mere presence of Orange as an emotional force can act as another kind of alarm clock. What I mean is, if weāre feeling mentally low, for example, we donāt need to express our grievances in the most eloquent way possible. Sometimes we just need to get angry. To cry, to shout nonsense. And that alone would be enough to prove that we need help. We need to do something about this.Ā
To summarize, I think most depictions connecting Orange to emotional externalization are not off. Thereās a lot of objectivity surrounding it, both when it comes to the narrative and his semantics as a side. We need a driving force that can topple the sides and Thomas over the edge to fully process the depth of Thomasā mental health issues.Ā
But, how does he, a supposedly, emotion-centric side, differ from Patton?
iii. Orangeās True Identity
Now that we laid our foundations, I think it would be a good time to entertain the question of: well, who is Orange?
Truth is, I have my own guess on what I believe Orange to be, but I cannot say my opinion is conclusive. My theories on Orange literally change every two months. So what I'll do, I suppose, is first, explain what makes a side a side. Then, I'll explain my own current predictions about Orange. Lastly, I'll list some popular fan theories I've heard about Orange and give you my thoughts.
a. What is a Side?
Firstā what constitutes a side? To me, there is no real basis in the conception of a side. Like what my friend Orb once explained to me, the interactions between sides are mental processes personified. This doesn't mean we should simply view the sides as metaphors, by the way. They're a hundred percent characters in their own right. But what I mean by āprocess personifiedā is that if we view one of Thomas' conflicts on its ownā as in, without the sidesā can we imagine the mental processes he's undergoing? To make it clearer, let's use an example. In WTIT, we see Remus and Logan battle out on who gets to influence Thomas more. If we saw this without the sides, we can think of it likeā imagine you're having a bad mental health day. You wanted to do a list of chores but your mind is in the gutters right now. You feel guilty because of your demotivation. You try doing what you planned, but you still suck at it, and now you're spiraling, thinking about every insecurity you have, but you're also trying to combat that by rationalizing it.
I'm not gonna say that this definition solves who Orange truly is, but it does help when it comes to understanding how the sides work. Another characteristic of a side would be their multifacetedness. No side embodies one thing alone. They can have roles that are adjacent to each other, but not the same thing. For example, Roman embodies both the ego and creativity. Not the same thing, but it works in tandem in Thomasā context. Same goes for Remus with intrusive thoughts and dark creativity. It is important to entertain the idea that Orange can encompass more than one role.Ā
The last thing to consider would be the technical difference between a āLightā Side and a āDarkā Side. The division was created for Thomas to compartmentalize and suppress sides of himself that his Catholic upbringing taught him to believe is bad. If we assume Orange is a āDarkā Side, he must be embodying something typically thought of as taboo.Ā
b. Who is Orange?
This brings us to our earlier question of, how does Patton differ from Orange if they both embody emotions? In DWIT, Logan confirms Remus was born from the categorization of certain thoughts as good or bad. I think it wouldn't be farfetched to suggest the same happened to Orange if he did embody emotions at a certain capacity. One of the biggest arguments I hear against this suggestion would be, if Patton already represents Thomasā emotions, why do we need another side who does? The answer, again, lies in the themes of black-and-white thinking and compartmentalization. If Remus embodies the thought of committing a āsinā, Orange could possibly embody the actual emotions of wanting to do so. Anger is merely one possibility in Orange's roster of emotions. There are other emotions as well deemed āsinfulā by Catholicismā pride, jealousy, hatred, greed, grief, etc. It would make sense that Patton would try omitting these out of himself when he was younger because he viewed them lowly.
So, what is my actual guess on who Orange is meant to embody? Well, I mean, I think my stance is pretty clear from the past 2500 words written literally before this. Simply put, if Remus is meant to embody forbidden thoughts, then Orange embodies forbidden emotions. Anger is merely one of many. He aids both Thomas and the other sides in externalizing strong emotions that seep past their efforts of suppression.
This is, of course, under the assumption that Orange is his own separate entity. I'm more inclined to believe this because Virgil confirms in CLBG that Janus has āDarkā Side friends (as in, plural). It also just feels more balanced this way if we consider the forbidden thoughts vis-a-vis forbidden emotions parallel to be true.
c. How could Logan be Orange?
But, of course, I've also considered the possibility of Logan being Orange. It's not my theory of choice but as someone who was balls deep in this theory a few months ago, there's definitely some merit to it. Here's the link to the post if you want to read my theory in full. It's pretty lengthy, but to summarize: This theory operates under the assumption that Thomasā suppression of certain sides (ie. making them a āDarkā Side) makes them develop an additional roleā the role Thomas perceives them as.Ā
To explain better, let's use Remus as an example. Logan explained that, originally, Remus separated from Roman as Dark Creativity. Because Thomas refuses to entertain any creative thought he deemed bad, any suggestion provided by Remus was immediately labeled as intrusive. Thus, he became intrusive thoughts via Thomasā low perception of him. Same goes for Janus, but to a lesser degree. As a side, he mostly acts out of the interest of Thomas, somewhat like self-preservation. But, because Catholic upbringing teaches that selfishness equates to evil, Thomas perceives Janusā role of keeping things hidden as deceitful.
Thus, if Logan is Orange, then that means Loganās role as logic is warping due to Thomasā low perception of him. Itās no secret that Thomas views Logan as a āstrictā side. In this scenario, I wouldnāt exactly say his additional role has something to do with externalization. Moreso, it has to do something with assertion or strict discipline. Think of an authoritative figure, like a teacher. Usually, when an authoritative teacher isnāt being respected in a class, they resort to meaner tactics like passive aggression, manipulation, etc. to impose their power. Logan doesnāt really transform into anything opposite to who he is as Logic. Rather, he has an additional role that coincides with Thomasā perverted perception of logic. Iām not actually sure what this role is, but if I were to guess, it has something to do with restriction, discipline, or conformity.Ā
Narratively, Logan becoming a āDarkā Side makes sense when you realize that his entire character arc is about him losing his sense of self-assertion. I made an essay last year that explores this if you want something to read later. To explain, WDWGOOBITM establishes how itās important for Thomas to balance his practicality (needs) and aspirational desires (wants) for him to function as a human being. At the same time, we get LNTAO where Logan realizes that he failed to contribute to the discussion as usefully as the other sides. This creates a scenario where Logan concedes a lot of the decision-making to Patton and Romanās hands. The result: Loganās presence is minimized. Even in the episodes where he āsaves the dayā (DWIT and the Frozen episode), Thomas refused to consider his suggestions until the latter halves of the episodes. WTIT emphasizes this even more when we see Thomas prioritize his date with Nico to keep himself happy instead of focusing on the chores he promised to do. Even if we donāt know if Roman had anything to do with this, itās obvious Thomas is naturally more inclined to do things Patton and Roman would prefer than something Logan does.
Thus, it makes sense that Logan becomes a āDarkā Side. But, and this is an important but, I donāt really agree with depictions of Logan suspending his role as logic to become a āDarkā Side. Logic is such an integral part of who we are as people, that even if youāre an intuition-focused person, youād still have logical facilities in your head that connect one thing to another. Basic knowledge and all that. I can only see Logan be a completely new role if someone takes his place as Logic. Personally, I donāt like that idea, but you can make your own takeaways on this.
How āDarkā Sides are conceived would still be a mystery. The closest weāve gotten to an explanation is Remusā origin story, where he and Roman originally started as one creativity until they separated. In this sense, becoming a āDarkā Side didnāt really uproot Remusā original role. He just changed a little. Iād like to assume the same for Logan, because if he is literally born as Thomasā Logic, then he as a āDarkā Side would still have similar roles, just with minor changes.
d. Other Theories
Now with the main theories out of the way, let me speedrun through other theories Iāve heard and give my thoughts on it:
Procrastination: I feel like this is too surface-level for a side. As in, hHow would Procrastination justify itself to Thomas as a side that wants to help? Yes, Procrastination would be a good foil to Thomas, but Thomasā inability to work doesnāt stem from Procrastination. It stems from bad solutions to his mental health crisis. Anyway, too cheap.
ADHD: This feels likeā¦ itās prone to problematic territory. For real, ADHD is so multifaceted in itself, and is literally a disability? I think it makes more sense to have ADHD traits sprinkled amongst the sides rather than one character representing it as a whole. To make it its own guy is like suggesting the other six sides are divorced from Thomasā ADHD characteristics, which feels wrong to me.
Hatred and any other suggestion that relates to ātabooā emotions: See my argument on Orange encapsulating forbidden emotions as a whole instead of Rage/Wrath on its own.
Justice: I actually liked this idea and sort of incorporated it with my idea of Orange as a means of externalization! To enact justice means to externalize your deepest desiresā cathartic release.Ā
Regret: See: the last two points, since itās very similar.
Repression: Your heartās in the right place, but most theories that subscribe to this literally just describe Janus. Keeping things secret because you think itās unbeneficial? Thatās one of Janusā roles.Ā
Insecurity: That is literally Remusā role. While intrusive thoughts shouldnāt be viewed as meritable, intrusive thoughts base itself on a personās sensitivities and insecurities. I also have an essay detailing how Remus is incredibly perceptive about everyoneās insecurities here.
That's about all the other theories I can recall, but if anyone else has other suggestions, send it to my inbox and I'll give you my thoughts.Ā
Now that we understand Orange's fundamentals and who he is as a side, the question to ask next is what is he capable of as a side?
iv. Powers and Influences
Now we get to the part where I am! The most unsure about! As of the time I'm writing this, I literally just had a conversation with Orb trying to understand how Orange āpossessesā Thomas and the sides, and nothing conclusive came out of it. Even if we are shown one instance of how Orange influences the others (ie. Logan's orange eyes), we actually do not know how that works at all.Ā
I suppose we can start by asking ourselves how Orange embodies forbidden emotions. I see his insistence for Thomas to perform a certain emotion similar to how Patton would do it. It's impulsive, reactionary. They undergo a situation, then they make Thomas feel an emotion they deem apt for that situation. The only reason Orange isn't utilized as much as Patton is because, of course, Patton is who Thomas is more familiar with. I'd also like to argue that the emotions Orange would possibly encapsulate aren't ones that are constantly expressed. Most of the time, we are in a state of happiness or contentment, emotions covered by Patton. If not, we experience sadness, another common emotion covered by Patton. I would imagine Orange's roster of emotions are only experienced rarely, or if put in a continuous dire situation. Immense anger, for example, would pop up if you feel continuously disenfranchised by something. See: Thomasā mental health crisis.
Ergo, Orange allows Thomas to feel ātabooā emotions when the situation calls for it. Pretty straightforward. But we're not done yet, because we have to consider what it means that Orange also assists other sides in externalizing their own emotions. We can't use the same argument we gave to Thomas because the sidesā¦ aren't each othersā sides. They're Thomasā. If Orange assists in the externalization of the other sidesā repressed emotions, then it has to work differently.
A widely accepted theory or headcanon I see in the fandom is that Orange āpossessedā Logan to make him get angry. Or, Logan made a deal with Orange, and now he has angry spurts he doesn't understand. While I appreciate the efforts to make juicy angst, I'm not fond of the idea that these theories basically imply that Logan's anger in WTIT was not his own. In reality, it was. Logan suppressed his frustrations about everyone ignoring his suggestions, and now he snaps. Making it seem like he can't achieve these emotions on his own volition implies he has no frustrations about his predicament to begin with.
The real question is, then, why did Logan's eyes glow orange if his emotions at that moment were genuine? Well, like other segments of this essay, it's hard for me to say something conclusively. We literally have nothing else to work on, guys, pardon me if I can't be a hundred percent certain on my assertions. But if I were to guess, I'm inclined to believe that Orange cannot make the sides feel emotions that they don't already have. Rather, he's responsible for enhancing it. In Logan's situation, for example, his frustration is completely his own. But when you submit to something like, let's say, blinding rage, sometimes you lose your sense of control and simply act. In this case, Orange possibly assists the flow of emotions the side in question would be experiencing.
I'll admit though, I literally have no clue how Orange does that, how he assists the other sides to feel their repressed emotions better. Again, we are working with practically nothing here. Although, one thing we can entertain is the idea that Orange has something to do with a side's state of being. Just like how Janus causes the sides to cover their mouths when expressing a lie, the sidesā eyes could possibly glow orange just because they're feeling an intense, ātabooā emotion. If you don't want to imagine Orange as its own side, you can also factor in the popular fan theory that Orange is simply a state of being the sides experience, no additional side required. Either way, while we cannot dive deep on the semantics of the glowy eyes thing, we can at least confirm there is a link between a side externalizing repressed or ātabooā emotions and Orange himself.
v. Relationships With The Sides (Especially Logan)
Another thing I wanted to discuss is the relationships Orange shares with the other sides. The most accepted depiction of Orange shows him distanced from the āDarkā Sides, while also having a crude fascination with Logan. We've discussed enough of how I view Orange in the context of the āDarkā Sides, so I'd like to focus more on what it means for Orange to assimilate with the āLightā Sides, especially Logan.
Because Logan's first to be seen with these orange eyes, many are quick to assume this is an isolated case. Fair enoughā we don't have other examples to compare this with. At the same time, I think a lot of people aren't considering the idea that, if we go by the assumption that Orange is connected to states of being, then any other side can also experience the orange eyes. I won't even be surprised if it happens to Roman in this coming season finale.
But is the much entertained idea of Logan being specifically targeted by Orange unfounded? I would say no, not necessarily. The āDarkā Sides and Logan have always had an interesting relationship. Logan in particular is shown to be the side most unbothered their presence. Again, he's the side who argued that no side can actually be categorized as āgoodā or ābadā. He's the most sympathetic to the āDarkā Sides, but alsoā¦ isnāt.Ā
There's an explainable contradiction here. Even if Logan is nicer to the āDarkā Sides compared to the others, he also has the reputation of being able to easily and successfully shut down their suggestions. He completely opposed Janusā side in SVS out of Thomasā interest. He shut down Remus not once, but twice, to protect Thomas. But that's the thingā he does not shut down the āDarkā Sidesā contributions because he disagrees with them. Moreso, he does it because he thinks that's what Thomasā wants. For example, he admitted in SVS that even if he wanted Thomas to attend the callback, he still preferred if Thomas attended the wedding instead because he thought that was what Thomas would have wanted.
And, well, we saw how Janus responded to Logan's decisionā he was confused. It's like he had trust Logan would vouch for his side. Let's remember the main goal of the āDarkā Sides: to be respected, to break Thomasā black-and-white thinking, and to get him out of his mental slump. This goal can only be achieved if they restore the balance of want and need lost partially due to Logan's diminishing self-assertion. They know Logan can do something if he lets himself loose. That's why Remus and Janus teased him in the Secret Santa gift exchange about wanting to express his frustrations. That's why, after Logan's outburst in WTIT, Remus says, āGee, Logan, now you're speaking my language.āĀ
They want Logan in on their plan. For that to begin, they need to make Logan in tune with his own emotional wants and needs, to make him more assertive. Thus, Orange would have to step in. There is merit when fans joke about the āDarkā Sides wanting Logan to go apeshitā it's because it's true. It's because it benefits them.
I can only provide things to consider when it comes to the other sides:
With Patton, think of the point I made earlier about Orange being ābadā emotions divorced from Patton, in a similar way Remus and Roman were created. The main difference between them would be that Patton has more faculty over principles, since Janus has that covered for the āDarkā Sides. While Patton, influenced by Catholic morality, thinks emotions and morals are intertwined, it would make sense for the more cynical sides to view them as separate.
Roman, as aforementioned, may also be susceptible to Orange's influence as the other side tends to hide his emotions from the others. With how the narrative is building up, I won't be surprised if Roman's frustrations with the whole debacle about morals heightens in the finale, especially if something Interesting happens between Thomas and Nico. You can't use Nico as a distraction forever, Thomas. Remember Thomasā anger at Nico not responding to his messages, remember Chekhov's Gun.
Virgil is an interesting case because he would be more familiar with Orange compared to the others. That begs the question of, is he aware of the āDarkā Sides current goals and plans? My idea is, yes, but only to a certain extent. This can go down many paths. There's the possibility that Virgil was the first part of the plan, but accidentally grew closer with the āLightā Sides before he fully completed it. This explains why he hasn't disclosed the plans to the others, especially since it may incriminate him as someone who was part of that plan. There's the possibility that he knows nothing of the plan, but is familiar with the āDarkā Sidesā antics. Thus, he can't do much but stay suspicious of the sides. Either way, we still don't know enough to conclude how much Virgil knows, but I doubt he would get along with Orange.
I pondered about Janus a little because, if Orange is meant to embody externalization in some form, what does that mean for him, the embodiment of self-preservation and secrecy? I don't have the answer, but while we know the āDarkā Sides have to work with each other, we don't actually know how close Janus and Remus genuinely are with Orange. To be fair, Janus and Remus are complete opposites and they get along fine. I'd definitely prefer it if all of the āDarkā Sides were actually close because it creates such a perfect juxtaposition to the āLightā Sidesā crumbling family.Ā
I also thought Orange and Remus would make interesting parallels as two forbidden versions of feeling and thinking respectfully. Like I said earlier, Remus can only suggest, but he never actually embodies the emotions of wanting to do taboo things. Orange, however, could. No other points except for the ones I mentioned about the āDarkā Sides in the previous bullet.
vi. Long-Term Presence
Originally, this essay would end here and already be posted. I even went through at least half of it for beta reading. Then, Orb started a discussion where they asked what I thought Orange's purpose was, especially since most theories (even the one you're reading right now) are more centered on Orange in the context of the current conflict. There was actually a part I wanted to write during the second segment where I disclosed what I thought Orange would contribute in the grander scheme of things, but I omitted it because it felt too out of place.
I replied to Orb what I was going to write; I thought that Orange was going to be the final push for Thomas to go to therapy, and make Thomas stand his ground more instead of asking the sides for advice every time he has an issue. I've always thought this, especially therapy, was one of the ways the series would end as a whole, because it means Thomas would stop talking to his sides. Or at least, in the way we see him do it in the show. That sounds a bit cynical, I know. Why would I suggest that Sanders Sides end by Thomas cutting ties with the sides?
Well, I'm not. Not entirely. I'm not advocating Thomas does. What I mean is, an underlying conflict to the current conflicts we have now is how Thomas internalizes his problems. This is literally how the series functions. Thomas has a problem, then consults himself about it via the sides. Even c!Joan mentions it in CLBG. This issue of the problem aversion Thomas has would be fine in the former parts of the series, as the things he consulted the sides about were small. But as the series progresses, we're facing issues that call for an entire paradigm shift in morality. Of Thomas putting himself and his friends in the infamous Trolley Problem. Of Thomas facing horrible intrusive thoughts he opts to combat alone.
I once called Sanders Sides a psychological horror because we see how a normal dude's mental health crumbles as he deals with life-changing situations alone. To find a solution for this main, underlying conflict means the show has to endā internalization IS the seriesā foundation!
And so Orb suggested the most batshit ideaā what if Orange was Thomasā foil? Not in a sense that confirms the Opposite Sides theory. Rather, Orange, if his role is externalization, is literally the antithesis of how the sides work. As Orb put it, Orange is there to ācompletely wreck the formatā, making Thomas realize that consulting the sides for help has its limits. He has to literally go out and touch grass, talk to his friends about his moral dilemmas, consult a damn therapist. That is what I think Orange's true purpose as a side is.
vii. Closing Statements
In the end, I can't say that everything I've stated in this essay is pure fact, but this is the most educated guess I can give considering what we're given and what we can expect to happen in canon. While most theories I've seen easily pinpoint different issues the sides and Thomas are facing in the series, these theories would then guess that Orange would be the cause of these issues. That's where theories like Procrastination, Repression, Regret, etc. come from. More than anything, I want you to see that Orange acts in response to these issues rather than in tandem with it.Ā
The best advice I can give you when theorizing about Orange is: ask yourself what needs to be seen in the series. Remember, Sanders Sides is a narrative. Episodes will continue to happen past Orange's inevitable reveal. Think of Orange in this context, as his own character with motivations and wants for Thomas. Only then you can make educated guesses about him.
Anyway, thank you for reading my incredibly extensive essay on Orange! Again, my words are not gospel, so if you want to discuss anything further, add onto this post or send me an ask! Please read this post though before you send me anything. And If you enjoyed this, PLEASE reblog, I'd definitely appreciate it! If you want to read more stuff from me, here's a carrd masterlist of Sanders Sides meta I've done. Happy reading!

Luo Binghe & Selflessness
There's a great post by @/jayktoralldaylong talking about how all the love interests in MXTX's novels prioritize the safety and well-being of the MCs rather than prioritizing - or even expecting - their love being returned. And image my surprise when the first reply I see is "Except Binghe. That bitch will sleep with your corpse," with others agreeing and calling him the "worst MXTX character" in the tags. I am yet again asking, did we read the same book? Luo Binghe is just as single-mindedly devoted to Shen Qingqiu as any of the others. Evidence of this is found at every turn during the main plot of Scum Villain: the plot during which he was actively possessed by a sentient evil sword. A sword which in a different timeline - a timeline without Shen Yuan - almost single-handedly turned Luo Bingge into a tyrant. He is under this influence for a majority of volumes 2 and 3 (of the Eng. transl.), which is also when he is accused of being "crazy" or "pushy" in regards to Shen Qingqiu.
Since the reply that inspired this post discussed the 5 years in which Shen Qingqiu was dead, that's what I'll address first. When Shen Qingqiu self-destructs, Luo Binghe is caught extremely off guard. It's easy, I think, to forget or disregard just how awful and confusing the entire novel's events have been for Binghe so far. Accepted to Qing Jing and subsequently horrifically abused for 4 years; a sudden, drastic, unexplained change in Shen Qingqiu and a blissful 3 years of peace; pushed into hell and utterly betrayed in an act of what appears to be very out of character hypocrisy. And when he returns (now in possession of the aforementioned sentient evil sword), he stays away from Cang Qiong and becomes a respectable cultivator in his own right, so that maybe, maybe Shen Qingqiu would accept him once again. And then he runs into Shen Qingqiu enjoying the company of someone who looks exactly like him; yet Shen Qingqiu runs from him, acting as though Binghe is the one who is dangerous, who is going to hurt him. Of course, Shen Qingqiu is justified in his fear, based on his own perceptions of the situation. But Luo Binghe does not know this.
Immediately following Shen Qingqiu's destruction is one of the only times we get a firsthand glimpse into Luo Binghe's perspective. This line is from the moments after he catches Shen Qingqiu's body: "Didn't Shizun hate his blood more than anything? Wasn't he unwilling to even be near him, to associate with him at all?" In the following pages is when he learns, for the first time that "Shizun too was...utterly heartbroken" during his time in the Abyss. When the chapter ends, Luo Binghe is still in utter shock, wiping the blood from Shen Qingqiu's face and trying, uselessly, to explain that he was just angry, that he just wanted to make him happy. We don't see the part of the scene where Luo Binghe leaves with the body, but it is not hard to infer that, in his complete state of denial and shock, his mind recently saved from an agonizing deviation, he was unwilling to part from his Shizun.
During the five years of Shen Qingqiu's absence, Luo Binghe kept his body in as perfect a state as possible. As we see in the Deep Dream extra, Luo Binghe brings Mu Qingfang (who he seems to respect, however minimally) to Huan Hua Pavilion some time after the events of Hua Yue City (which we know because Mu Qingfang expects Shen Qingqiu's body to "have long since festered and decayed"). We, as Shen Qingqiu, then get a glimpse into what Luo Binghe does with the body: he cooks countless meals that will go uneaten, and he transfers qi to prevent that decay. Skin to skin contact is the most direct way to transfer qi, as supported in many other scenes, including the flashback scene in this same extra. This type of qi transfer can also be carried out while sleeping, as evidenced in the Bing-mei vs. Bing-ge extra, providing a regulated stream of spiritual energy for an entire night. As Mu Qingfang said earlier, this uses up "an enormous amount of spiritual power" and is only enough to keep his body protected "for a single day" without reversing everything. Luo Binghe is immensely powerful, but even protagonists are not built to drain themselves every night for 5 years, while also fighting off Xin Mo, running Huan Hua, controlling the demon realm, and NOT giving up on everything. When Shen Qingqiu is thought to be dead in the minutes after Maigu Ridge, Luo Binge "almost tried to follow" him. And yet, when he believed there was even a chance he might return, he held on "for almost two thousand more of these days and nights."
The only other time we see Luo Binghe's interactions with the corpse is when Shen Qingqiu, undiscovered in the plant body, witnesses Liu Qingge's infiltration. In this, it is said that "Luo Binghe was unwilling to harm the corpse, so he could only release it." It's worth mentioning that, if Liu Qingge had managed to take the body back to Cang Qiong - or, what sequence is initiated when he does - it will be given burial rights, it will decay, and Shen Qingqiu will never again have a possibility of inhabiting it. Luo Binghe cannot let this happen; it's not merely about possession or attachment. And yet, he would sooner allow this possibility that allowing even the potential of harm to come to him.
When all is said and done, after Luo Binghe has been broken out of Xin Mo's control and Shen Qingqiu does not die - the first thing he does is return him to Cang Qiong Mountain. When Shen Qingqiu suggests that they leave, together, Luo Binghe is "dumbfounded." He fully expected to be left, for Shen Qingqiu to be unwilling. He would have done anything for Shen Qingqiu and expected nothing in return.
At his core, even under influence and in emotional turmoil, Luo Binghe's love is unfalteringly selfless. There are so many examples of this, both in the main plot and in the post-canon extras, but I think this post is long enough already. Suffice it to say that nothing is more important that Shen Qingqiu to Luo Binghe - least of all himself.

Moon - The Child, Saturn - The Parent
Moon and Saturn, despite being enemies, have one thing in common, and that is their cyclical, time oriented nature. Saturn is the responsible parent, who becomes dependent, childlike and weak in their old age, and Moon is the child, that grows into a responsible parent. As these two are basically the equivalent of "what was first - chicken or egg?" metaphor, these two astral bodies form a cycle of their own.
The maturity of Saturn is what we experience when we move away from our parents, and face the reality, that Moon doesn't like to face - the fact that our parents are also human, can't protect us from everything, and when we step into adult life, we're equalized with them. Saturn brings objectivity, rationality and perspective with growing up, and that perspective includes understanding, that a lot of the pain we went through growing up was circumstantial, and our parents did what they could to the best of their ability, and as we grow up we are prone to making mistakes if we don't check ourselves, just like they are.
The Moon has the opposite approach, because it's reactive, concerned only with survival, self protection in the moment and fulfillment of one's own needs. It doesn't possess any long term perspective, so it takes situations at face value from it's own biased point of view, and doesn't have the capacity to universalize. That trait of the Moon is necessary in order for one to survive in the physical world at all, just like a toddler learns that it need to cry and scream to signal its primal needs to its parents. Growing up, it also consists of a capacity to self soothe, navigate one's own internal landscape, ultimately achieve self understanding while being able to relate to and sympathize with others. A mature Moon is capable of empathy, and thus benefits from Saturn's objectivity.
The difference in perception between these two bodies is the scale of vision. The Moon only sees, perceives and feels what's in front of its face, it has a 0-1 scale of what feels good vs what doesn't feel good and it reacts based on that, with no conscience. Saturn has an infinite perspective of why something that didn't feel good to the Moon may have occurred. Saturn contains within itself an inherent judgment, that if we blame others for their actions, we need to put ourselves in their shoes. Saturn understands, that while we may blame our parents, we would make our own fair share mistakes with our own children if we had them and being a parent doesn't automatically make you perfect. The Moon is focused on reactively extracting immediate reactions from others. Saturn is focused on self improvement, substance and correction.
The irony is in how intertwined these planets are, despite their contradictory nature. Without the Moon, we wouldn't have Saturn. If we didn't know how we felt, we wouldn't know how to place boundaries, we wouldn't know what to change. Without Saturn, without boundaries and trials, we wouldn't know what our emotional needs are and what we need to provide ourselves as self-care.
As a result, the childish parts of ourselves in the Moon participate in our growing up process as much as Saturn does. A truly refined individual is someone capable of mastering both sides of these equation.

On Heteromorphs & Heteromorphobia (Arcs VI - X , Hero Killer to Provisional License Exam)
(This post will also cover the bonus chapter āTsuyu's Ribbity Diary.ā)
Thank you all for your amazing response to last week's post, my goodness! I thought I'd found about all the audience I was likely to get for my harping about heteromorphic discrimination, so I was delighted to see a number of new names!
I do have to warn you all, if you haven't done much looking into my archives, that I'm pretty critical of BNHA these days, especially of the ways it insists on holding up individualistic solutions to problems clearly established as systemic in nature. That will become more apparent when I get into the post-war material, as the endgame is absolutely rotten with it.
This week, though, we'll start by getting out of the school to get a look at signs of and contributors to heteromorphobia in the wider world.
The Vs. Hero Killer Arc (Chapters 45-59)
Chapter 45:
Minaās preferred alias, Alien Queen, in reference to the Xenomorph queen from the Aliens franchise, is turned down by Midnight.Ā The reason for this is never made especially clear.Ā Class 1-B gets away with a number of villainous or monstrous hero names, like Phantom Thief and Gevaudan, violent ones like Battle Fist, even an animal reference in Jack Mantis.Ā But Mina, for whatever reason, gets pushed towards the indescribably twee Pinky instead.Ā Does Midnight the R-rated hero not think girls should get to have hero names with some edge?Ā Surely not; her entire persona is based on titillation.Ā Length is clearly not a factor, given that Midnight personally approves Canāt Stop Twinkling. I donāt know exactly what went down here (from a Watsonian perspective, that is; the Doylist guesses are readily apparent and all eyeroll-inducing), so I will simply point out that a non-baseline gal wanted to name herself after a famous monster with acidic blood and was pressured into going with something cutesy based on her skin color instead.Ā Bakugouās choice gets turned down as well,[1] but he actually has āmurder,ā like, right there in the name; Alien Queen is quite roundabout by comparison!
Chapter 48:Ā
Introduction of Uwabami, the Pro Hero gal with the head snakes.Ā Sheās a bit of a weird case.Ā Given that all we know she does is find hidden people using the snakesā keen senses, do they have some self-awareness that makes them able to communicate with herāa case somewhat like Tokoyami and Dark Shadow, perhaps?Ā Does she just tap into their senses at will rather than being able to speak to them?Ā Or are they rather just extensions of herself, with no particular consciousness of their own, and they function like what must be a fairly dizzying array of extra-sensory perception that she receives at all times? āāā Whatever the case, sheās a model and celebrity, and thus our first clear example of a heteromorph who doesnāt seem to suffer for her looks. Her looks are, of course, quite accentuated, given that her hero costume is a low-cut evening dress with a slit in the side up to her hip.Ā Other than the hair-serpents, sheās a baseline woman who checks all the boxes for modern beauty standards; she will serve in this fashion as a good predictor of other highly ranked heteromorphic Heroes.
Chapter 51+55:
Endeavor, as will be made clear in Chapter 55, doesnāt really have any idea what the Noumuās deal is.Ā As far as he knows, itās just like any other villaināand yet in Chapter 51, he opens up with an attack that bathes the Noumu in flame anyway, and comments in 55 that heās never known anyone to remain conscious after such an attack.Ā While I think this mostly speaks to the general brutality with which villains are treated by heroesāmuch different from standard police practice in real-life Japan!āitās nonetheless notable that the Noumu he attacked with such casual ferocity certainly doesnāt look very baseline to the casual eye, between the exposed brain, the significant height, and the crawling movement.
Chapter 56:
Midoriya is startled by Chief Tsuragamaeās āwoofā interjections.Ā He doesnāt comment on it out loud, so Iām not inclined to hold it against him (not like someone else Iām about to bring up), but it wouldn't be the first time heās come across this kind of vocalization: Tsuyu makes ribbit noises pretty frequently. āāā
Tsuragamae notes that the authorization of a certain class of people, called āheroes,ā to weaponize their quirks against others was initially a heavily criticized decision, one which only garnered public support because those original heroes were careful to always obey the laws dictating the circumstances in which they used their quirks.Ā He goes on to say, of using oneās quirk to inflict harm without explicit instruction from the powers-that-be, āSuch action would represent a stunning breach of law.āĀ Like Thirteen before him, he completely omits any mention of how such laws disproportionately affect heteromorphs, who canāt turn off a permanent physical trait, and, particularly in cases of people whose entire bodies are divergent, have little choice in whether or not to use their quirk in any sort of physical altercation that might lead to harm. āāā
Shouto, angry over what he perceives as punishment for a good deed, calls Tsuragamae a mutt.Ā The chief doesnāt react particularly strongly to this, but as the chief of police, you have to imagine heās pretty used to the slings and arrows of public opinion.Ā The incident passes without comment, but it will not be the last time we hear a Todoroki derisively referring to another human being as an animal.
There are some sweatdrops and exhortations to get the kid to cool it, but those were ongoing before the animal words came out.
Chapter 57:Ā
Gran Torino notes that the age they live in, for better or for worse, is one of suppression, and that the situation with Stain and the League will draw people out who are influenced by that ideology.Ā Gran doesnāt elaborate on exactly what sorts of people he has in mindāAll Might says only, āThen heroes will deal with them,āābut itās an early hint that there are people in this society who feel unjustly suppressed.Ā Crucially, Gran Torino doesnāt even necessarily think those people are wrong; he just thinks itās a necessary evil.Ā But what, exactly, is it that heās grudgingly accepting as inevitable for the sake of maintaining the status quo?Ā And how might his circumstances need to differ for him to have a different opinion? āāā
In Chapter 27, we learned that producing support goods requires a government license; here we find out, courtesy of Giran, that dealing in and producing support goods without such a license is a major crime.Ā So if you, for any reason, failed that ārigorous examinationā to get cleared for support goods for quality-of-life reasons, youāre unlikely to find someone whoāll just provide them to you out of sympathy provided you keep quiet about where you got them.Ā Instead, you have little choice but to turn to black market brokersāall because the government doesnāt think your quirk is affecting you negatively enough to qualify you for support equipment. āāā Again, this isnāt specifically about heteromorphs, but someone having an emitter quirk they canāt control well who needs the support item because they are choosing to pursue a career requiring them to learn that control is a very different case than someone who needs government support because of an immutable, always-on physical trait. āāā
This chapter contains the first appearances of both Gigantomachia and Spinner, both fairly extreme heteromorphs: Machia for his size and rocky hide, and Spinner for animal traits considerably more prominent than e.g. Tokoyamiās bird head or even Tsuyuās conglomeration of mildly froggy traits.Ā Indeed, Spinnerās heteromorphic traits are so much more prominent than something like Jirouās earlobes that it hardly seems accurate to even categorize their bodies the same way. āāā
The sidebar for Daikaku Miyagi, the anchorman with the quirk that gave him two big horns who amputated one so that it would be less in the way during newscasts and other things that required there to be a camera on him.Ā This in and of itself wouldnāt necessarily be notable, save that the same extra goes on to describe how the decision garnered some backlash from āa certain human rights groupā who said that decisions like his fostered discrimination and were linked to the rejection of quirk-based society on the whole.Ā Horikoshi further notes that he enjoys thinking about the lives and stories behind minor charactersāeven this far back, then, three and a half years before the introduction of the CRC, we have concrete evidence that the author was thinking about quirk-based discrimination and the politicization of heteromorphic features.
Chapter 59:Ā
All Might drops some exposition about the Advent of the Exceptional, during which we see an image of a crowd full of implied-quirkless people holding up signs proclaiming their humanity and the monstrosity of those with quirks.Ā Conversely, three of the four quirked people we see have obvious physical divergence from baseline human appearance.Ā So from early on, that āmonsterā turn of phrase was heavily associated with changes in the physical appearances of those with special abilities.Ā Later on, the PLF advisor at the hospital will tie these two things together explicitly.
āāā
The Final Exams Arc (Chapters 60-69)
Chapter 61:
Ectoplasmās character sheet.Ā The teeth are creepy no matter which way you cut it, but they look much more profoundly unsettling when theyāre right there on his unmasked face, as opposed to behind a black cowl, where you can let your eye fool you that they are in some way part of its design.Ā His hero costume, naturally, includes the cowl, but his daily clothes do notāI wonder if he ever tried to have a gentle talk with Shouji about why Shouji wears the mask even in his downtime?Ā I wonder even more how much the teaching staff in general, and Nedzu and Aizawa specifically, actually know about Shoujiās history.Ā āāāo Itās also noted that Ecloplasm looks scary, but has received continued support after coming back to the job after losing both legs in a fight with a villaināwe see this same pattern with Jeanist after Kamino.Ā No word on how regular his support was before the traumatic double limb loss, though.
Chapter 66:Ā
Nedzu, we find, was ātoyed with by humans in all sorts of ways in the past.āĀ Nothing we know about him suggests that he has any particular longevity, but his dynamic with Endeavor,[2] many chapters down the line, does suggest to me that he was at least on the staff when with Endeavor was at UA some thirty years ago.Ā Thirty years is within the span of All Mightās career, well after society began to stabilize with the formalization of the Hero System.Ā And yet, despite that, a sentient being, one with humanāabove human!āintelligence, was mistreated badly enough that he bears a grudge to this day.Ā Nedzu is, again, not in precisely the same situation as a human heteromorph, but he serves as an indicator of what humans have, even in the age of heroes, been willing to do to those they think of as āanimals.ā āāā
A shot of Koda and his mother, who look much alike.Ā Interestingly, the biggest difference in their appearance is that she has horn-like protrusions that her son lacks.Ā Weāre a long way from the first quirk evolutions, and even farther from Kodaās quirk evolution, but we will later see Kodaās mother specifically tie those horns to her animal communication quirk becoming more powerful.Ā This makes for another good piece of evidence towards Horikoshi having a grasp of heteromorphobia from early on, as the evidence is pretty good that Koda-mama got those horns as a result of a quirk evolution of her own, and those donāt happen under normal, non-stressful circumstances.Ā More on Kodaās parents in a bit, as they're a pretty stand-out case in another way that isnāt immediately apparent here.
Can we call it foreshadowing for Koda defending Shouji at the hospital that Koda is wearing the same scarf as the main character in Horikoshi's Oumagadoki Zoo? Hmm. I'll leave that one to codenamesazanka.
Chapter 67:Ā
A flashback panel to Minetaās days in middle school.Ā While I donāt doubt that there are P L E N T Y of reasons Mineta would be unpopular with the girls in his class, it is nonetheless notable that the popular boy getting showered with attention is perfectly baseline, while Mineta and his friends are not.
Note also that the cute heteromorph girl has long-ish ears and no other obvious divergent features.
Chapter 68:Ā
Shouji and Iida are specifically called out to at the mall, trying to attract them as customers with claims that whichever storefront employee is hailing them can help them find anything they need.Ā Midoriya mutters to himself about the difficulties of catering to everyone, given the many different types of quirks scattered across multiple age groups. āāā
Crowd scenes at the mall show scattered numbers of heteromorphs, a somewhat higher number than usual for such civilian crowd scenes.Ā The Kiyashi Ward Shopping Mall is noted for being the biggest and trendiest in the prefecture, with a variety that attracts lots and lots of people, so perhaps itās no surprise to see somewhat more heteromorphs than usual there.
āāā
The Forest Training Camp Arc (Chapters 70-83)
Chapter 70:Ā
Introduction of the Wild Wild Pussycats.Ā A team of three Emitters and a Transformation-type, none of them in the slightest heteromorphic (give or take Tigerās permanent :3 mouth), they nonetheless theme themselves after cats, including fake tails, big costume paw gloves, and cat-ear-esque headsets.Ā Itās cute and unobjectionable in and of itself, but I do wonder what people like e.g. Officer Sansa think of it.
Chapter 71:Ā
Shouji is missing from the hot springs scene.Ā It doesnāt hugely stand out in the moment because Aoyama and Sero arenāt there either, but it does read a bit differently with the benefit of hindsight. Ā Given the strong possibility that Aoyama is off doing Traitor Activities and Shouji is avoiding any possibility of having to torpedo the hot springs fun-times with an explanation of that time he was savagely beaten by people in his hometown right in an open street, it kinda leaves Sero as the only one who maybe just skipped for normal reasons, like that hot springs would gunk up his tape or something.
Chapter 73:Ā
Bakugou addresses Ojiro as āTailāāreferring to him by his heteromorphic trait.Ā Heās not even particularly angry at the moment; heās just still nursing a grudge about Todorokiās underwhelming performance in their Sports Festival match and wants to swap partners for the Test of Courage.Ā Early Bakugou is very much a ājudge a person by their quirkā sort. āāā
Pixie Bob ushers Tsuyu and Ochaco into the woods for their turn at the Test of Courage by referring to the latter as Uraraka-kitty and the former as Ribbit-kitty.[3]Ā While in the English, this reads as a baseline woman in a cat costume referring to the heteromorphic student by her animal-themed verbal tic and the baseline student by her actual name, uraraka is a fairly onomatopoeic way to say bright and cheerful.Ā I would guess that Pixie Bob is probably referring to Ochacoās personality here, which makes it somewhat less egregious.Ā It wonāt be the last time someone refers to Tsuyu via the frog sound instead of her name, though.
Chapter 75:
Mandalay telepathically compliments Spinner, calling him both cool and handsome.Ā While I doubt heās the only person in the world whoād react the way he doesāhe blushes, gets flustered, and missteps, giving Mandalay an opportunity to attack himāthe moment does get some new context when you consider how everyone called him āthe lizard freakā in his hometown.Ā Approximately zero people calling him cool and handsome back there, one imagines!Ā Having it immediately turn out to be a ploy likely informs some of the outraged anger in his response.
Chapter 81:Ā
Mandalay points out that Spinner never used his quirk during their combat, implying that she doesnāt think just his lizard-like appearance or his claws ācount.āĀ Chalk another one up to the classification problems of āheteromorphā as a descriptive term.Ā This will turn out to rather neatly illustrate one of the issues Iāve been talking about with regard to the way heteromorphs are unfairly disadvantaged by the current laws about public quirk use.Ā Remember, a āVillainā is someone using their quirk illegally.Ā So if Mandalay doesnāt think Spinner used a quirk here, and since he has no record, why does he get categorized as a Villain instead of just a garden variety criminal? āāā Now, one could say that by associating with the League of Villains, Spinner is rather claiming the designation for himself, and we donāt know how the legal system will technically classify him, when and if he ever actually faces trial.Ā To that, I would say to hold the thought, because Skeptic will eventually back me up on the, āHeteromorphs are unfairly targeted by Villain designations,ā claim all but word for word. āāā
BONUS CHAPTER 1: Tsuyuās Ribbety Diary
We meet Tsuyuās family, all various froggy types.Ā Theyāre a cute family, but the husband and wife both being froggy kind of raises some questions about pressures that might exist about marrying your same ātype,ā or at least refraining from marrying anyone too obviously not.Ā Iād be more willing to wave it off if not for two things.Ā āāā First, we get the same sort of scenario from Spinnerās character sheet, that his is āa family full of reptilian quirks.āĀ Second, there are very few romances in the series between someone close to ābaselineā and someone with a more extreme heteromorphic appearance.Ā The most obvious, clear-cut, canonical example is Kodaās parentsāhis dad has slightly weird hair but is otherwise entirely baseline; we see him defending his wife from other peoplesā mockery.Ā That, of course, is a single panel limited to a flashback inside a flashback, so not exactly very visible to the reader!Ā The next-most significant one I can come up with is Natsuo and his mouse girlfriend, who has likewise been seen in one (1) panel, had no dialogue, and whose appearance and identity were so incidental the anime deleted her entirely. āāā Whoās next?Ā Well, if you assume all those No Comments from Kamui Woods and Mount Lady about their relationship are indicative of a relationship between them, theyād be another, though we donāt actually know what Shinji actually looks like under his mask, only the implication that itās divergent enough that he prefers to cover his face.Ā Next up on my tally would be Thief Takami and Tomie, but since the sum total of Takamiās animal traits are tiny little elbow wings, you can see how fast the drop-off is there. āāā Compare this to the number of pairings/families we have between people of like type: Bakugouās parents, Iidaās, Jirouās, Aoyamaās, Tsuyuās, Ochacoās, Shoutoās, Togaās, Spinnerās, and Tomuraās whole family on both sides.Ā āāā Then you get the ship-teasy stuff thatās more about crushes, people dating, or hints that are perceived as pointing towards epilogue romances: Deku and Ochaco, Jirou and Kaminari, Shindo and Yo, Gentle and La Brava, Miss Jokeās flirting with Aizawa, and Togaās variety of crushes (among which Tsuyu is the most distant from Togaās own body type).[4]Ā I think Kirishima and Mina are right on that borderline, with Mina having a normal body type but a collection of minor but highly visible divergent traits. āāā So like, the vast, vast majority of the romantic relationships in the show are between relatively baseline people.Ā In that context, it sticks out like a sore thumb to me that Tsuyu and Spinner are both explicitly said to have the same type of animal heteromorph quality on both sides of their family tree.Ā Itās not an incest concern or anything, just that I wonder what the pressure is on cross-type couples, or what social circles look like post-graduation. āāā
Two classmates talk about how itās hard to tell what Tsuyu is thinking; one of them says, with her eyes hooded and a kind of cool expression, āThat expression of hers never changes.Ā Maybe ācuz sheās a frog?ā āāā
Tsuyu tells us that she never really made any friends; while some of this may simply be because Tsuyu didnāt have much time to socialize, between hero training and looking after her family, itās also true that all of her classmates that we see have baseline appearances. āāā
This lasts until she starts getting stalked by a snake-headed heteromorph girl named Mangusu Habukoāa fellow loner.Ā Tsuyu is initially frightened by Habukoās behavior, but has an intuitive sense for what the deal is, that Habuko wants to be friends but is awkward and doesnāt know how to broach it. āāā
When asked if she wants to be friends, Habuko flips out.Ā She calls herself treacherous and untrustworthy; she calls Tsuyu a foolish frog and says she must be joking, and that she should choose her friends more carefully. She then immediately dissolves into tears.Ā Somehow, I doubt all this self-loathing about her innate nature manifested out of thin air! āāā
The Hideout Raid Arc (Chapters 84-97)
Something thatās observable throughout this arc is that weāre in another sequence, like the Sports Festival, where the percentage of people with heteromorphic features in the crowd shots tends to run a bit higher than the norm of the series to date.Ā Unlike the Sports Festival, though, these crowds are just civilians, not heroes.Ā So whatās the difference between Kamino and the earlier on-the-street crowd scenes? āāā Well, the neighborhood the Noumu warehouse is in is a somewhat rougher area.Ā Part of the visual shorthand for that is people in edgier clothes, stuff thatās indicative of districts with bars, clubs, sleazy hangout spots, and so forth, but another shorthand is an increased number of heteromorphs.
These panels are respectively from Chapters 87 and 92.
Chapter 87:
The character sheet for Kamui Woods notes that the story of his early childhood is āgrand and compelling,ā and that his story was made into a documentary.Ā That, to me, has Inspiring True Story written all over it.Ā Probably not coincidentally, Kamui Woods is another character whose face weāve never seen.Ā As more pointing in the direction of him having a childhood marked by severe discrimination, heās not sure of his ageāitās given as ā29 since he started counting.āĀ So was he abandoned as an infant for his weird face?Ā I could come up with other explanations, all equally over the top (extreme confinement, for example, that left him unable to properly mark the passage of time), but the fact that he canāt e.g. look up a birth certificate for himself suggests that whatever went so wrong for him, it happened very early. āāā ā¦Though I suppose thereās the possibility that heās not human, but rather a tree that manifested a quirk.Ā As documentary-worthy origins go, though, that feels less Inspiring True Story and more Educational Biopic About Rare Phenomenon. āāā
The Provisional Hero License Exam Arc (Chapters 98-121)
Chapter 99:Ā
Shoujiās room is shown, all but barren.Ā He says that he doesnāt care much about owning things, but knowing what we come to know about his history, itās easy to wonder if he really doesnāt care about owning things or if this is rooted in a childhood in which it was believed that anything he touched would be polluted.Ā Not a situation that led to him being given much of his own, one suspects!
Chapter 103:
This chapter introduces Yokumiru Mera, from the HPSC, who gives an opening statement that has some very interesting ruthlessness lurking in its subtext.Ā Particularly relevant to our current topic is his comment that in the modern era, the time it takes to resolve a given incident is incredibly short, so the test that year will be prioritizing speed.Ā Prioritizing speed (wouldnāt want some other hero to get the metaphorical kill first, after all!) is a surefire way to guarantee that heroes are not taking the time to really examine all factors in a situation or make any attempts whatsoever at calm, considered de-escalation, but rather are just making snap judgements based on their biases and gut reactions.Ā Guess what group of people thatās going to disproportionately impact? āāā āāāo Now, itās notable that Mera says the test prioritizes speed, but the conclusion many others come to is that the test only pretends to do so; that actually, it prioritizes care and information gathering.Ā Indeed, we find a few chapters later that the actual priority is teamwork, as requested by police higher-upsāthe idea is to fill in the gap left behind by All Might with hero squads that work well together.[5]Ā Ā However, while the intention may be to gather those good at teamwork, it certainly doesnāt stop people like Shouto and Inasa from cruising throughāand, in any case, whether the groups learn teamwork or not doesnāt take away from an HPSC rep telling them to their face that speed of incident resolution is one of the most important things to a modern hero and never following that up with any kind of amendment or clarification.
Chapter 107:
Introduces the HUC, or Help Us Company, professionals trained to act as victims in disaster rescue exercises.Ā Given that contextāwhat theyāre communicating to students training to understand what āvictimsā look and act likeāitās extremely worth examining what they, well, look like.
God, this is so Yikes.
And having asked that question, we find that the only people in this group that might not be baselineāthe ones with short, childlike staturesāare dressed to emphasize that stature.Ā The end effect is a crowd of āvictimsā with not a single heteromorphic representative.
Chapter 109:
Shiketsuās class rep, Mora Nagamasaāthe extremely hairy oneāapproaches Bakugou to extend an apology for Shishikuraās behavior during the exam.Ā Itās noticeable here that, having matured somewhat since Early Series Bakugou, and having been approached in downtime in a reasonable manner, Bakugou manages to refrain from coming up with any demeaning nicknames centered on Moraās appearance.Ā Kirishima remarks internally on all the hair, but only internally; heās much too polite to say anything out loud.
Chapter 110:
A big splashy introduction for the man ranked #3 in the Heroes Who Look Like Villains ranking, Gang Orca.Ā Heās at the test to play villain and is, just as noticeably as all the play-victims are baseline, a heteromorph.Ā At the time of his introduction, heās ranked Number 10 in the Hero Rankings, but will be bumped out later on.Ā This does, however, make him the highest-ranked known heteromorph who doesnāt have a human face,[6] with the possible exception of Kamui Woodsāwho, like Shouji, covers it with a mask.
Gang Orcaās character sheet notes that, while heās a popular guest at aquariums, his intimidating face and āstony personalityā always result in weepy children.Ā He apparently finds this relatively upsetting (ālots of angstā) but, unlike Shouji or Kamui Woods, has not taken to wearing a mask, nor trying to tone down his personality on any levelāto the contrary, Present Mic suggests much later on that he exaggerates it.
-----------------
Next time, I'll cover from the Shie Hassaikai arc through the end of Joint Training. Thanks for reading!
--------------------- FOOTNOTES ---------------------
[1] Initially.Ā He sticks to his guns long enough that he gets away with it in the end, though.
[2] The big tell is that Nedzu addresses Endeavor as Todoroki-kun rather than Todoroki-san or simply by his hero name, but his observation that Todoroki-kun has āmaturedā (literally in the Japanese, ābecome an adultā) doesnāt hurt, either.
[3] Kerokero neko and Uraraka neko.
[4] You can get further out there with this, but by the time you get to e.g. Shouto and Momo or Ojiro and Hagakure, the ice is definitely getting thinner on whether youāre seeing groundwork for future wedding bells or just reasonably close male/female friendship.Ā Your mileage may vary depending on how tightly attached your shipping goggles are or how cynical you are about shounen authorsā tendencies towards timeskip marriages.Ā Also, I canāt be bothered to dig up and list out the crushes or shipping patterns among the Class B kids. Koroiro likes the mushroom gal?
[5] Note that Mera phrases this as being merely a stopgap until they find the next All Might.Ā The HPSC is not so eager to change the methods theyāve come to rely on over the last thirty some-odd years!
[6] We donāt know enough for me to say for sure whether Wash is a heteromorph.

Hori making Spinner write a book dedicated to the destruction like,,, š¤¦
okay i'm still sitting around in my feelings about this because we got a couple of different tracks going on this chapter that would ultimately influence how spinner's book could turn out.
firstly, spinner is speaking positively about shigaraki and what he meant to him, a back and forth on praising shigaraki for what he represented, as a destroyer and a leader and a symbol. he also humanizes shigaraki, as a guy to liked the same games and was spinner's first friend. he has a moment of regret* that he couldn't do more to save shigaraki himself, make better choices. in this moment spinner is grieving and angry, at deku and society and himself, and is firing off on all cylinders to do one last thing for shigaraki. the destruction that shigaraki spoke of, that spinner desired, meant something to them, and it meant something to them for specific reasons.
(*note that i really wish that if horikoshi was going to expound on spinner's existing-ish character flaw of trying to shut down thinking about things when the pressure gets too much, he maybe could have referenced a better story beat for spinner to reflect on, or had given spinner actual choices and options about the shigafo situation that he turned a blind eye to. as it is, it feels like a lame attempt to introduce nuance into a situation but not providing enough substance for that nuance to actually land. bnha is always doing this.)
secondly, the documentary used to contrast spinner's feelings is both inconsiderate/ignorant of shigaraki as a person and why he did the things he did. nothing encapsulates this more than the cameo from the fuckin long walk grandma. but it's not wrong about the tragedy of the destruction that he wrought, the loss of life (although "honestly this blows" in the officials really undermines that lmao), the potential his actions had in inspiring others to follow in his footsteps and cause more grief, "spin more sadness". what the people in the documentary are missing is why people would sympathize and want what shigaraki represented in the first place.
overall, we've got something to work with for how spinner can approach his book and what he'll write about vs what the public perception could be. we've also got an in-universe example of a book published about a controversial "villainous" figure - destro's memoirs as republished by the MLA, which simultaneously could be dismissed by "normal" citizens like miyashita, while also being successful recruiting material for the MLA, speaking to people who related to destro's ideals.
so okay, spinner writes his book. this can go a couple of ways.
a) it comes across as a bunch of fanatical, unpolished ravings fully propelled by the strength of spinner's emotions, his grief and rage and devotion, and is very alien and isolating to any casual readers. it can be dismissed the same way normies dismissed destro's memoir, maybe even suppressed, and won't have the same kind of strategic vision and social capital that MLA possessed in their recruitment plans. it might gain notoriety in the same vein as stain merch getting popular after his spree, and inspire some fringe desperados to start their villainous careers. but unless the next afo/shigaraki is out there ready to capitalize on such a cultural moment, i don't know if it'll reach the same levels as the league's rise did. in any case, not the best look for spinner and that destruction he loves.
b) while the grief and rage and devotion are still big motivations for spinner, the act of writing it all out gives him the frame of mind and tools he needs to process it, to disentangle the knots of his feelings and perception of self, his perception of shigaraki, and take a more methodical approach in providing his and the league's perspectives. spinner references shigaraki as the "symbol of fear", but this means something different to him than it does to the general populace, to all for one, to shigaraki himself. can spinner convey that? the appeal of the destruction that shigaraki promised, while being so much more than that? in this scenario there's still going to a lot of push back - the documentary warns against sob stories after all - but maybe reception will be kinder. if nothing else, maybe just the exercise of it all will lift a weight off of spinner.
i wonder about destro's book. how he wrote about his mother.

Venus Rx. Check on that inner teenager!
This time is fundamental when it comes to our self worth/esteem/love! The relationship you have to yourself and how you show up in relationships at this stage gives us detail in how we view ourselves in relation to others! This is when one learns how they fit in (or not) with others/in this world(conformity vs non conformity), compatibility, exploring our understanding of how to apply love/create connection with others based on guidance from those older than us/more experience than us.
Age 13 is the 2nd house profection year. 2h rules self worth/esteem, what and who we value. 2nd house is ruled by Venus. Venus rules our ability to evaluate. Also, This is the second Jupiter return beginning to develop and shape our view of the world in how we occupy spaces with others romantically or platonically. Oneās aesthetic is re-formed here too.
0-12 is our first Jupiter cycle. Age 12 we begin out Jupiter return as we are transitioning into a new part of brain development (Jupiter rules the brain)
The 1st 7 years (Mercury rules 7 ) is when thereās structure being built in the mind. (Mercury rules the mind) Major milestones/brain development. We are first experiencing ourselves in the world and forming a relationship with it through exploring our senses, being most in tune with our instincts, collecting information subconsciously. (Moon collects, Mercury utilizes the information). This time affects how you develop social skills. (Moon=sociability, Mercury=communication(verbal, body language, facial expressions)
Age 7 is the 8th house profection year. This is we begin to go through metamorphosis in how we interact with the world, gaining more independence. (8h=death, our separation from parents to explore other relationships and who we are, seeing reality from a different perspective )
Ages 8-12 is typically when we are beginning the journey of puberty, a transitional stage in life. This is when one becomes more aware of their body image (Venus)
12 to 13 is a great milestone in development. This is when we hit our second Jupiter Return. Jupiter rules growth, expansion, our political views, beliefs systems. Here is where we build upon or reassess this structure through our interaction with para-social & social relationships. Physical growth spurts(Jupiter) (Age 12: 1st house year=physical appearance)
That first cycle of the Jupiter return(0-12), we were gaining understanding/perception (Jupiter) of what the world is through our parental/guardian/family dynamics. Jupiter rules those that guide/educate us. This reflects in the relationship we choose with others.
13-17 we are more inclined to be influenced by peers. More likely to engage in risk and romance. External vs internal validation. This is typically when the Myelination(generation of myelin, which is a lipid, Jupiter rules lipids) of the brain is mostly complete ( development of cognitive & motor skills ) (the planet Jupiter is mature at 16) (except the prefrontal cortex , Mercury rules this (rationalizing thoughts, behavior, emotions) & Mercury Matures at 32, while the moon(who it gets info from) is mature at 24 & Venus(evaluative ability) matures at 25(when the prefrontal cortex reaches mature development )
Age 18 is the 7th house profection year. When experience our next phase in life, where we gain a new relationship to the world. Your status in the world changes.
Age 19 is the 8th house profection year. Upon gaining/losing a certain status in life, we are now on a foolās journey, you may begin to look for new purpose or passion at this stage. 8th house= death. This is the ending of our teenage years.
Our cognizance of these years aides is in closing out past cycles, creating new experiences, finding a new direction in life, understanding the areas of our lives/selves in which we need to develop more, create a more stable/strong/secure foundation. Since this Venus Rx is paired with a Saturn Rx, we could be experiencing tower moments(upheavals/progression/transformation ) in current relationships(past relationships can be relevant too) , career paths, passions in life, self esteem, perception of love, etc.

knock knock ā losing battle plssss
(future me adding this later because I want people to see this without reading this whole mess: In The Losing Battle, Lamina loves Treech while Tanner loves the idea of Treech. Explanation is at the end of the post below)
Omg okay there is so much I could and want to talk about but I'd be writing several essays so I'll try to keep this contained to one thing. If anyone else is interested I'll ramble about the other stuff because there is so much that I haven't put into text yet or have kept vague/implied so far (IE what exactly happened between Treech and Vipsania during the interviews and dynamics between characters that are neither Treech nor Lamina). A lot of it is due to perspective restraints, because I love me an unreliable narrator to the point where I've never written anything that didn't contain it to some degree but it does make it difficult to fully get across what the character thinks vs what's actually happening around them. There's a lot of smaller inaccuracies in their perception of reality that I don't see anyone mentioning (though to be fair not many people talk to me about the fic) so I don't know if anyone caught them or not. A shame, really, because I've put a stupid amount of thought into them.
Also, there's just so much to say about all my fics but especially this one! I could talk about all the different motivations of characters who aren't very present or the tensions building in the background or the deep explanations of why characters do what they do that TreeMina isn't self-aware or present enough for to realize or I could talk about how this whole fic's basic premise is the soul-crushing reality that major, world-shattering changes on a personal level barely have any impact on the bigger picture until decades in the future but I'll pick just one. Oohh this is gonna be difficult I just really want to type whatever comes to mind but I can't. But! That's enough useless introductory words. Onto the unhinged ramblings of a mad entity!
The mini LumberHouse subplot! Otherwise known as why Tanner really doesn't like Lamina in this fic, even if it isn't that apparent due to how small his role is in the story.
I'm choosing Tanner because I have a lot to say about him, but unlike the main duo or Vipsania and Pup, Tanner isn't gonna get a big spotlight chapter as it stands right now. Maybe as a mini spin off one-shot but I'm not planning on it. Vip and Pup will get more focus later, especially once Treech and Lamina are out of the arena, but Tanner just doesn't have enough impact on the story to get that. Which is the intention here.
My basic idea for Tanner is that he's someone who very clearly has his own life and complicated emotions during the games, with pain and drama and the whole shebang, but it all happens in the background. You can get a good idea of his struggles if you pay attention but it's just as easy to read past and not even notice, because he's not a main character. He's my representation for the way all these kids had their own stories that could just have easily been the one you were reading, but you aren't. So you only get glimpses whenever one of the actual main characters is close enough to take note. Most of his story is implied, with enough room for other people to have different interpretations than what I intended. The timeline in my head for the Tanner/Treech arc of Tanner's life is as follows:
Tanner didn't even really notice Treech before the arena bombing. Sure, he enjoyed the singing and he knew his name, but at most he really noticed him due to his proximity to Lamina, who Tanner tended to pay attention to due to her crying. Then Treech had the balls to turn Coral's offer down during the bombing. and Tanner really started to see Treech. The way he shared all of his food, the small ways in which he showed kindness, the way his face lit up so prettily when he smiled. Tanner became intrigued, but only ever from a distance. With dawning horror he realizes he's developed a crush on a boy he'll be forced to kill in a matter of days, and he can't even go and talk to him. When they meet up in the arena, it's no accident. Tanner deliberately snuck away from Coral and Mizzen to see if he could catch a glimpse of Treech and possibly even talk to him, if only to give himself some closure. When he finds Treech with Dill, his feelings deepen, but when he hears Lamina calling for him... When he sees the way those two interact, he knows he's lost. He lost before he even began.
See, Tanner dislikes Lamina, but it's not for anything she's done. It's because she has what he wants to have: A connection with Treech. She's had years to get to know him and spend time with him, and Tanner didn't even get an hour. Now, he's not stupid, Tanner knows that he and Treech were never gonna be a thing because no shit, one of them is gonna have to die here, but it doesn't lessen the jealousy. It doesn't erase the what-ifs and the might-have-beens. And unlike Lamina, Tanner doesn't get to spend his last few days with someone he cares about. Brandy's gone and Treech is at the top of his alliance's blacklist. Whether he lives or dies, he'll have spent these days as good as alone.
The biggest difference between Tanner and Lamina that made TreeMina endgame instead of LumberHouse is that Tanner has a crush where Lamina is in love. One of the most painful things for Tanner is that he knows he could've loved Treech if he'd had the time, and maybe it could have been mutual, but they don't. Lamina did have that time, and over the years she and Treech fell in love far past a simple crush. Basically, Lamina is scared of losing what she has where Tanner laments what might have been if things were just a little different. Tanner doesn't actually know Treech, they've barely spoken to each other, and while he has a good grasp of who Treech is due to what he's seen so far, he's only seen bits and pieces of his person. Therefore, he can't really love Treech. He has a crush on him, and he loves the idea of Treech he has in his head based on what he's observed. How accurate that image of him is, is a whole different question. Lamina, meanwhile, has had years to get to know him. She and Treech have shared many vulnerable, personal moments together and their bond has grown incredibly strong over the years. Not even betrayal could fully break it. Lamina truly loves Treech, because she knows him better than anyone else. From his strengths to his biggest flaws, she's seen them all and she loves him for it.
Lamina gets to stay with Treech because she knows him in ways Tanner will never get the chance to, and he hates her for it.

What's Lee working on in 2024?? A Mini Guide:
I have a better job with slightly less hours so hopefully it is time for creative things again yippee!! Text under cut
Slide 1:
Liho (comic)
Themes: definitions of love, social expectations, relationships dynamics, idealization
Welcome to the loveliest campus in the world, protected by the ever adored Cupid Heart!
Ifeolewa is a sophomore college student that has been chosen to become a magical girl and defend the sanctity of love around her school!
ā¦unfortunately, Ife has a 5th graderās understanding of love at best and doesnāt quite understand the complexities of modern relationships and romances.
Now, Ife juggles school, fighting villains, āfixing relationshipsā, and trying to win the heart of her crush, Liho (her best friendās incredibly recent ex-girlfriend).
Slide 2:
Slips of the Stars (comic)
Themes: loneliness, abandonment, free will vs fate,Ā individual perspective
Kaasey āSlipsā Marion is a aimless, bored, burnt out college student who doesnāt know where theyāre going in life.Ā
Theyāre also convinced that every person around them is literally in a story, meticulously recording the story details in her notebook. They believe they are a background character in these stories, probably for comic relief.
Also, every day the world ends and then she wakes up at the beginning of the day again.Ā
That oneās new.
Slips has to step out of the shadows and work with her main characters to figure out whatās happening, why, whoās causing it, and how to help this story finally have its happy ending before time runs out.
Slide 3:
Hospital Food (achronological ergodic novel-y thing..?)
Themes: Mental health and chronic illness, identity, multigenerational relationships, life and what could lie beyond it (if anything)
Sickly new employee Ward devoted her time and energy to her new job at an inpatient care facility for individuals with deadly parasites eating them alive. Ward and her team fought day and night to save patient lives from the very same parasites that threatened Wardās life more and more every second.
Now, Ward, her coworkers, and their clients are nowhere to be found. The facility they worked and stayed at no longer exists.Ā
What happened? Where did they go? Is anyone left alive? All thatās left are the forgotten files, notes, and memos collecting dust in abandoned desks and drawers, waiting to be discovered.
Slide 4:
Other odds and endsĀ
I share story custody with some friends on some things about spies, zombie apocalypse, urban fantasy mysteries, and more magical girls
You might see me posting about an experiment I did polling college students about loneliness and their relationship to technology
Additionally might also just generally see things for my class/workĀ
Thereās also a lot of story ideas and tropes that I really like (see next slide) so youāll see a lot of very specific tags regarding those conceptsĀ
I like playing with different mediums like art, writing, music, video games, and many more!
All the art in this is my own :) save for the jojo reference
Slide 5:

I am so fucking sick of fake generational divides. We need to stop buying into the narrative of old queers vs young queers. Both sides of this do. No it wasn't teenagers who made assimilationism an omnipresent thing in our spaces, no old queers are not a danger to our acceptance, we are just constantly fed propaganda meant to divide us and turn the perception of the queer generational divide into a self fulfilling prophecy and it's working like a fucking charm and I am sick of it.
Maybe part of it is that I'm like, part of this invisible generation among queers, definitely not an elder and divorced from all the old strughles but also absolutely not part of the generation who grew up with trans classmates. So I feel stuck in the middle and am just seeing two groups of hurt people I greatly emphasize with at each others throats over fucking bullshit that has always been sewn by puritans, radfems, conservatives and their whole ilk and I see in real time how young queers are led toward disdain for their own culture and history and older queers are led towards rejection of the validity of young queers perspectives and fears.
I am sick of queer spaces being either a desxualized and sanitized parody of themselves for the sake of the poor children, or a no minors allowed zone as soon as we are allowed to be open and free and weird. I am sick of seeing older ppl talk about teenagers like that comes with brain rot and I am sick of young people buying into pedo panic and lavander scare era homophobic rethoric and radfem bs. I am sick of ideological conflicts sewn by the same people who have been doing it for decades being reduced to teens vs elders. I am sick of the queer community tearing apart over imaginary age divides popularized specifically to tear us apart.

an analytical breakdown of sukuna
There is an interesting pattern of how Sukuna's characterization as an āenlightenedā hedonist is done. Of course, he does whatever he pleases every time he's on panel. But more importantly, the central theme is how his ideals are consistently treated by the story as ācorrect.ā
Gojo didn't have a real sense of self ā got locked up. Yuki worked with Tengen and didn't fight with her own domain ā got bisected and had to blow herself up. Yuji, a cog, fights for a system, and God knows I don't have to mention how much my boy has been beaten down.
Gojo is the pinnacle of the current Jujutsu system, and Tengen is the symbol of the old Jujutsu order. The implications of the both of them being affected by Sukuna from a meta perspective are obvious for the larger story.
Moreover, the expressions on Sukuna's face are vastly different when you consider the panel where we objectively know he's staring at Jogo's burning corpse vs when he's talking to him. There are stronger grounds to state that the conversation happened in Jogo's head too.
In fact, that was the point of putting the word enlightened in quotation marks in one of the very first tweets of this thread. The idea that he's enlightened comes from the iconic "tenjÅ tenge" line being delivered by the narrator/Nanami, not by Sukuna himself.
Consider how he is based on a Shinto deity of the same name. This piece of information also plays a substantial role in our perception of his enlightenment.
Of course, this is explained by how Gege plays around with the traditional idea of enlightenment. More on this later. detective critics Ā· Mar 17, 2023 This assertion that he adapts to the perceptions of those viewing him is supported by his very characteristic matrix. One of his abilities, Cleave, literally adapts to his opponents.
Moreover, when he temporarily got control of Yuji's body, the primary threat was Mahoraga.
And what is Mahoraga's special ability? That's right, it's to adapt. It all fits perfectly.
At the risk of getting lost in a tangent, this sequence concretely foreshadows Sukuna's connection to angels as well.
The Cherubim are called the "many-eyed," and, along with the Seraphim, are depicted in flames. This is because of their close proximity to God. His radiant fire is reflected in the depictions of the Seraphim and Cherubim. Sukuna has many eyes, and he also has flames...
Much to Jogo's surprise. In fact, Sukuna even reasons that a cursed spirit wouldn't know about this, meaning humans, who are privy to Christian lore, would be able to make the connection.
Further, in said lore, angels appear to humans as and how it's necessary.
Not to mention, Sukuna explicitly states he's not going to change back to his four-armed form, because his current form is more suited to fight sorcerers. He has forever been seen adapting to the situation, the reiteration of this concept is almost obsessive.
So far, we've explored Sukuna's character before a certain turning point in the series, which is none other than Sukuna leaving Yuji's body and occupying Megumi's.
Ever since then, we've learned a lot about Sukuna. The difference is that we learn about him FROM HIM.
detective critics Ā· Mar 17, 2023 Sukuna is the ultimate example of what you get when you optimize CE. In fact, Kenjaku models his plans after the revival of the Heian era, when Sukuna ruled as the King of Curses.
Yuki explicitly states she wants to research Maki as an example of away from CE. detective critics Ā· Mar 17, 2023 This contrast also extends to Maki's portrayal as a true enlightened being vs Sukuna's enlightenment obviously being an imposition of perception, and it further emboldens me to claim that Sukuna has as much characterization from a meta perspective as Maki. detective critics Ā· Mar 17, 2023 Final point: In the latest chapter, Sukuna summons Mahoraga. But this time, Mahoraga's wheel, the symbol of perfect adaptability, appears over his head like a halo.
This likely points to Sukuna's newly gained agency; to adapt or not is his privilege. detective critics Ā· Mar 17, 2023 To wrap up this thread, I believe Sukuna is one of the more overlooked characters in JJK right now in terms of quality of writing, and hope I substantiated that belief in this thread.

Awareness vs. Understanding
For me personally awareness is more important than understanding. Take a motorcycle for example, there are those that know every mechanical specification of their motorcycle and understand the science of the internal combustion engine and for them the experience of riding may be richer because of this understanding. For me it is sufficient to know that when I twist the throttle I go fast and when I apply the brakes I slow down. Of course there is much more to riding a motorcycle but the point I am making is that what I experience at the track is not dependent on an understanding of the mechanics or physics of my actions. I merely need to be aware of the cause and effect of my actions while riding. Without any in depth understanding I am able to reach a level of proficiency that brings about a profound change in perspective.
Now I am not saying it is easy to bring about this profound change in perspective, quite the contrary. It takes a great deal of work and when it comes to track days a great deal of money. Of course there are incremental changes in perception that are perceptible as one participates in such an endeavor but there is a point at which one experiences a deeper sort of psychic change. It is the same when one is on a spiritual journey. There is an ultimate goal but there are changes intentional or unintentional that occur along the way. And actually the journey is better I think when we are not so focused on achieving that goal because then our focus becomes too narrow and we may expend a lot of needless energy in achieving some predetermined milestone.
Such was the case for me in the beginning. I was so focused on dragging my knee at the race track that I was not focusing on the skills we were being taught. It seemed no matter how far out I tried to stick out that knee I was not making contact. We were told not to be fast but to be smooth but I was so focused on that personal milestone that I was neither smooth nor fast.
Finally I stopped trying to drag the knee and focused on practicing the skills we were being taught. And then it happened. I wasnāt even trying and I made contact with the ground. It was such a foreign feeling that at first it did not register as having dragged my knee. When it happened I thought, whoa! What was that? And then I realized what had just happened. I then thought, ok. That is what that feels like.
For me that change of perception that came about during my spiritual journey was just like that. At some point I became aware of a state of serenity and realized that I was indeed experiencing it and yet that had never been my goal. I was on a journey of self discovery and when I started to practice humility and service I came to know serenity.
It was when I stopped thinking about myself that my life became better. It was when I stopped wanting something else that my life became better. It was when I thought about others before I thought about myself that my life became better. And by becoming better I donāt mean that my life changed. What I mean is that my perception changed. Gratitude made things look, smell, feel and taste better.
I made a drastic change in life style a while back because I wanted the pain to stop. I was engaged in self destructive behavior that had turned my life into a living nightmare. It was one of those nightmares where you know it is a nightmare and you are watching everything from a third person view. In the nightmare you are paralyzed with fear and unable to speak. You struggle to scream to end the nightmare but you cannot wake yourself out of it.
That is what my life had become and I could not go on like that any longer. It was at that time that I surrendered and sought help. In the beginning I simply wanted the pain to stop, no more no less. What I found however was nothing short of miraculous. I simply followed instructions and did as others before me had done and I came to have a whole new attitude and outlook. In the beginning there was an absolutely overwhelming sense of gratitude at having woken from the nightmare. That feeling that you get when you wake up from that horrible nightmare and realize that it was only a nightmare is such a relief. Its very similar to a near death experience, everything looks different on the other side of it. And I make no exaggeration when I say that my new outlook came from having a near death experience. In the end I may have been alive but I was not living. When I woke form the nightmare I had a second chance at life.
As I undertook this new life style there were numerous opportunities to analyze and to over think things. I was doing things in a new way and so it could have been very easy to get side tracked with the why and the what for but what I learned was that I didnāt need to know why. I just needed to do it. I was greatly aware of the results of taking an action so I didnāt need to understand how it worked. I simply made a twist of the throttle and let the process carry me forward. At times I felt I just wasnāt moving fast enough but if I was patient and waited for the RPMs to reach the power band I was thrust forward at an incredibly exhilarating pace.
Many people spend a great deal of time in trying to reach an understanding of a particular subject that really does not help them in dealing with that subject. A perfect example is men trying to understand women and vice versa. I do not find it necessary to understand a woman. It is not necessary for me to know why women do what they do. What I do find very important is to be aware of what they do. It is very important for me to listen. āLove is listening.ā :-) Itās not important what I think of it but if I know what she does and what she wants I can be a good partner.
Of course this is very basic and yet many people spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out why their gf/bf does this or that as if to figure such things out will somehow prevent them from happening again. Worse yet they mistakenly think that if they can figure it out they can then have control over the situation. Is that not silly? Call me simplistic (and I will thank you for it), but I am perfectly happy not knowing why. It is true that in the beginning there is a great deal of concentration in the traditional sense because we are learning knew skills as a rider and we are trying to absorb every thing in a relatively short period of time but eventually we will have practiced to a point that the skills no longer require thought. That is a great milestone when you realize that you are not thinking so much anymore but rather executing skills that you have practiced so many times. This is what is often referred to as muscle memory. And this lead to a state of flow. That is why I love riding at the track so much. While engaged in this activity I am thinking of absolutely nothing else. Talk about serenity! I am not thinking about the past. I am not thinking about the future. I am not thinking about anything going on in my life. I am not thinking. I am experiencing that very moment.
This is something I wish for others. It does not require you to learn to ride a motorcycle and go to a race track. I have this same feeling when snowboarding and I have read of surfers experiencing the same thing. It just needs to be something that shuts everything else out while doing it. It is so liberating that I wish others to feel it. It is such a joyful feeling.
That is why service is so important in recovery. It is common knowledge that when you are doing for others you are not thinking of yourself. When I was early in sobriety I saw service as a chore and necessity. I really didn't want to do it but I knew if I wanted to stay sober I needed to go beyond my comfort zone and follow the suggestions. After all, the culmination of the steps is to be of service to others. Once I started taking on service positions I saw the value and experienced the joy that comes from it.

Hi, Iām ^ anon. I want to thank you for taking the time and answering the ask I sent. It helped me so much, I am truly grateful for your kind words. It was exactly what I needed to here after feeling lost and exhausted. I was having a rough day and sent that ask in a moment of desperation. I legit felt like a friend comforting me. Truth be told, I wasnāt expecting such an empathetic response, so thank you so muchš„ŗ
I took a few hours to think about what you said. Iām not going to focus on āgetting outā of the current situations but rather focus on the desired end. I reflected on my journey so far and realized that I always wanted validation from the senses. So I think Iāll need to start trusting myself more. I also see my desires as too big, whereas in theory thereās nothing big or small. But the fact that no amount of physical action can remotely get me close to how Iād like my life to be used to bother me. The fear that despite having all this information, I could still never experience what I wanted.
I agree with you on taking practical steps because I did put my life on hold because I thought things would manifest quick and Iād be out of here. But it did not end well. So Iām never pulling that off lmaoš
Would you suggest starting āsmallā and build my way up? Idk I never did that because I know thereās nothing like that and I straight up want to have my desires. But maybe I should? Idkš
hi, anon! i'm really happy to hear that response because advice from a friend was really exactly the vibe i was going for there, and i'm happy to hear you really gave yourself some time to think it all over.
okay, so i'm going to echo back what you said here that it's really due time to start trusting yourself more. there is no trust more worthy or freeing than self-trust, so with that in mind, i'm going to kinda volley your question back to you.
i can't tell you what you should or shouldn't do or what would or wouldn't be best for you. i mean, i technically "can," but i don't think that would really serve you in the long-run because it's only feeding into that perception that you need someone else's instruction when your own guidance and decision is the most valuable that you have.
this is your path and your journey. no one knows you better than you.
that being said, i can share with you what i've been doing for myself, and maybe that will offer some alternative perspective for you to pick and choose what might be helpful for you? because i've asked myself the same questions over and over about going big vs. going small (by human/incorrect judgment) and all the things.
for myself, i've made a decision that everything is unfolding perfectly for me, and this has taken off a lot of the "but i don't see it now" pressure. i decided that all my desires are mine; it's destined, and everything i experience is part of this magical journey to uniting with them in the physical. my success/victory isn't dependent on what i do or don't do, what i do or don't think, what i do or don't feel. it's done with god, and that's what matters. my success is inevitable as god's will, and i am god's will.
from that decision, i take this experience moment-to-moment (from a human linear perspective). so, if that means reminding myself that it's all unfolding perfectly, and everything i desire is mine, i do. if i want to remind myself around a specific topic, i do. whenever i experience something the human self judges as unideal, i remind myself that it doesn't matter; it means nothing. the truth is actually (insert desired outcome), and i do this with all thingsā"big" and "small."
sometimes, i have more anxious days than others; that's okay. i don't pressure myself to think perfect thoughts or feel perfect all the time or to even identify with my divine self all the time. i know that these anxious moments will pass because it's all temporary, as the only thing that's eternal is me, the real me. and sure enough, eventually it does pass! and i'm back to feeling and experiencing myself as i'd like to, and it's really nbd.
i've been giving these moments less power, and it's easier for me to at least watch the mind during my anxiety instead of identifying with it. but even when i do, i remind myself that it's okay, i'm okay, and everything i desire is already mine. no weapon against me shall prosper, even if it's in my own hand. there is nothing i can do, think, or feel that could corrupt the will/plan of god. it really is done.
i recognize that the human self is always hungry for more to prove that it will be okay. it always wants stimulation, good news, good things, pleasure, etc. and keeping this in mind has made it easier to dismiss some of those nagging feelings of "BUT I WANT MORE!! AND I WANT IT NOW!!"
i've really just adopted a mindset of "i'm doing my best, and that's enough." and if my best one day is just making it through an anxiety day, that's enough. if my best another day is having the most spectacular meditation, that's enough. if my best another day is just getting everything done on my human to-do list that's enough. it's enough because i am enough. and this has made my existence a lot more easeful and coherent when it comes to stitching together the divine and human aspects of being a limitless being in human form.
so, again, i can't tell you what you should do, or at least, i won't, but i hope that this maybe has given you some insight to chew on so you can adopt whatever mentality and ways of being for yourself that resonate with you.

(Really long ask ahead iām sorry!) I think your thoughts on dick and his similarities vs differences to bruce are so interesting! Personally iām wondering how much of NTT played an influence on this kind of characterization bc iāve never fully finished ntt but i read like nearly all the pre-80s batman 1940 issues lol and dick very much was portrayed as more idealistic than bruce in some ways while more no-nonsense (? For lack of better word) in other ways, like when it comes to batman easing up a little on selina for romance reasons LOL. Though ofc dick totally turns into - well, a dick - in team books, as i grow older i find myself far more compelled by a potential story of an 18 yr old who seemed to have the whole weight of the world on his shoulders (by his own perception) and breaking under his own impractically strong sense of duty and sky-high expectations for others, then realizing as he grows older that it doesnāt have to be that way esp after seeing the perspectives of characters like kory, wally, joey, roy, etc. Like personally as someone who never really had a huge interest in NTT anyway, iām surprised at how desperately people want to hold on to the characterization of dick when he was 18-19 and never letting him grow past that, like itās so difficult for me to believe that at age 25 he would be the same uptight controlling kid that he was at 19. Maybe iām biased though bc i was like one of those insufferable INTJ internet stereotypes as a teenager, and while that worldview did bring me achievements iām proud of like the fact that iām in med school rn studying what i love, i still know that at age 22 i have changed SO much from when i was 18 and i canāt imagine any reasonably mature or normally-functioning person (let alone someone high-functioning like dick) not doing the same lol. Especially since dick is the kind of person who would literally die if heās not constantly growing and evolving past his faults bc of his insufferable perfectionism, idk how heād be willfully blind to the negative effects of his worldview in early NTT and refuse to grow from there. He even has a quote thatās like āiāve spent years as a student of my own behaviorā which i always found highly encouraging bc i know he really does want to improve himself even at his worst. It reminds me of that Marcus Aurelius quote: āif someone can prove me wrong and show me my mistake in any thought or action, i shall gladly change. I seek the truth, which never harmed anyone; the harm is to persist in oneās own self-deception and ignorance.ā But what are your thoughts? (Thank you for reading all this š„¹)
oh i absolutely agree! i cannot tell you how many times i think about the person i was a couple years ago and who i am now like i cringe so much omg.. maturity is an ever persistent process even if we don't recognize its effects immediately and it absolutely is crazy to think that anyone would remain in such a static state of mind for several years on end. esp when like you said dick is someone who wants to be better! so despite his several hypocrisies it is nonetheless in his best interests to look internally and analyze and evolve. and i feel like that very much could have happened had there been any actual segue between dick's breakup with kory and his re-entry into the batfam. i don't think there was much of a connection between these two sets of writers at all and so what you got is what felt like two very distinct parts of dick's life that didn't necessarily reveal a bridge point. so it's not entirely unrealistic that dick may grow to be the person (at least to some extent) that bat canon portrayed him to be in the years that followed but i certainly think as it stands it felt unearned and like all of his issues explored in ntt were conveniently swept to the side without any semblance of closure (albeit i do think some of these issues are addressed in outsiders '03 but in that dickheaded way that winick explores things generally. so i'm not sure it's the kind of closure people actually want). it's very sad and ig that's what people cling to more than anything. it's not that they're opposed to him growing to be a better person but that they're opposed to a version of dick who feels like he sprung out of nothing
#ironically enough i Do think dick going back to gotham after the kory breakup made sense#like when something that big happens in your life what are you going to do. seek the advice of the one person you look up to more than anyt#ing right. but marv wolfman complicated things by writing bruce the way he did so rather than bruce playing an active part#in guiding dick through some of his issues and mistakes he instead became dick's burden to bear through extensive post knightfall trauma#and i mean you all know i Love knightfall. i really do it gives me brainworms upon brainworms#but i wish there had been just one moment. like after it was all over. that bruce and dick actually got to talk and like#discuss dick's problems yknow#i get the feeling they didn't delve much when writing prodigal bc they had to set up the next arcs and stuff but it's like#come on. come on. they could've afforded it. if dick really had to come back to gotham for a temporary stint where he tried to find himself#than a proper conversation with bruce about what he was going through should have been a part of that#bc i do think working with bruce's new cavalry of three teen heroes (tim / steph / cass) would have borne wonderful opportunities#for dick to grow as a leader and peer considering his ridiculous expectations of others and how this would measure up against teenagers#but the problem is that bat canon decided he was going to magically gel with everyone bc he was emotionally more well adjusted than bruce#was. like ok. ok. whateverrrrrrrr#like idk it's so funny they were given a dick with a plethora of issues and instead of using any of that ammo they were like nah#we're going to make our lives harder and give him new problems manifested out of thin air. totally makes sense. bullseye#outbox

"What is exactly does 'Based' mean? Asking for the strange cat girl." If anyone has the answers to something like this, it's Caelus.
"Lemme ask you this, Yanfei. You hold a wealth of experiences. So there's always the good shot to find similarity.."
There's a pause as Caelus seems to organize his thoughts. For this would be no mere simple dive into terminology. The ~price~ would be the raw spirit that's kept into what follows. "Have you ever found yourself in a one vs an army scenario? Literally, metaphorically, the whole focus when it comes to Based lies within this measure." Canting his head, there would be a searing drive set within those golden eyes.
"To be that veritable drop of 'self' within an ocean that intends to claim you. Based would be a rebellion, a force fashioned into a term, to show that someone has taken the position of an immovable rock." Countless instances throughout the history of all Life could attest to this. In truth, it was also a sentiment he carries for the Trailblaze as well.
"To be Based is to be true. To be unfaltering in grounds that could easily conform. Now!" He adds in, holding up a hand as a request. "Let's not get this confused with contrarians here. Those fucks just love the other option just cause it exists. Paper thins, no weight outside of some flustered ego."
"But there's also pitfalls to this. If you were to travel across social channels. Based would simply be said as a measure of simple agreement. A lot of people don't really take the time, nor truly have the experience to carry and express the true meaning of Based. Others simple use it as a hypocritical inversed. They're looking for the likeminded, so that'd be 'Based' in their eyes. That's the false positive."
"So if we're getting to the roots. Based is a brazen form of authenticity, the measure of soul that holds courage amidst billowing storms of doubt. The most you can take for it, is that it's a shining example of someone's character when they're truly putting themselves out there. While I'd love to say it'd have more spirited, uplifting and altruistic means... Based is surprisingly human, for many wouldn't hesitate give that title for people who lord their depravities too."
Which is a goddamn shame to Caelus's eyes. However, he recognizes that lens, perception and perspective are all crucial aspects.
"Like I'd say this. Yanfei, your resolve for keeping true to your diligence is pretty damned Based."
It's undoubtedly her and her heart shining.
