Fire Emblem Observation

The Flame Emperor is both not as bad as the game initially wants you to think and worse than some of the more, shall we say, hardcore Edelgard fans want to think. Let me explain.

The Flame Emperor did NOT, in fact, try to have Dimitri and Claude assassinated at the beginning of the game, and people who actually think she did are being ridiculous - if that was the idea, then she wouldn't have stuck with them during the attack nor would she have hired idiot bandit Kostas and his goons whom Dimitri and Claude can vanquish with ease rather than the Death Knight or one of the Slithers. Her plan was to scare away the new teacher so that Jeritza could take his place...a plan that succeeded in Three Hopes, but that was thwarted in Three Houses by the appearance of Byleth. She also was not responsible for Flayn's kidnapping - that was Thales, who merely "requested" her to loan him the Death Knight and as we later learn he doesn't truly make "requests", nor was she responsible for what happened at Remire Village following the experiments the Slithers did on Flayn's blood. And she was absolutely NOT responsible in any way for the Tragedy of Duscur, that was just Dimitri's paranoia talking after hearing Thales saying it was done "to provide her with the strength she needs", mistakenly believing the Flame Emperor to be in charge of Thales rather than vice-versa. So we can cross out those as crimes that the Flame Emperor committed.

But with that said, hiring, double-crossing and potentially killing Kostas once he'd failed to secure the outcome she wanted is an evil deed. Having her forces pulling the strings of the Western Church (and Lonato by extension) to aid her and doing nothing while they are killed for it is an evil deed. Allowing Kronya-as-Monaca free reign around Garreg Mach to do the things that ultimately led to Jeralt's death is an evil deed. Breaking into the Holy Tomb with her soldiers to steal Crest Stones and threatening to kill anyone who tries to interfere is an evil deed. And leading an army to sack Garreg Mach without anything remotely resembling popular support is an evil deed. There's also whatever the Hell this was that she intended to do to Flayn and Kronya-as-Monaca, which is a Schrodinger's Crime given that we never are allowed to see it....though it likely wasn't as bad as "bring me the women" makes it sound.

In short, the Flame Emperor is a terrorist turned war criminal who should have her crimes acknowledged, but isn't the utter monster that the Slithers pulling her strings are either.
