The Ryoko Kui interview's reception is such a disaster over a pretty normal (yet still flawed) interview between a non-Japanese fan and Japanese artistic. This is discourse for discourse's sake, and it's no surprise that almost every Twitter user I've looked at who's using this interview to parade Kui around as a goated mangaka standing strong against Western ideology is anti-trans.
Like, I do think the interview was kinda wonky with its focus on fandom culture, which Kui clearly didn't have much interest in. But sometimes that happens. Sometimes interactions between two people, especially a fan and a creator, two people who view and interact with a piece of media in completely opposite perspectives, don't click. Does this really need to get blown up into a "West vs. East culture war" issue.
Anyways, Kui saying "I don't consider my audience's interpretations when writing. I leave it to their imaginations, but I have my own read on things too" is the healthiest, most normal thing an artist/writer who wants a non-parasocial audience could say. Artists and writers use this line all the time. If Kui didn't enjoy autistic Laius or Farcille headcanons, she would have probably voiced/signalled her discomfort, like she did on the topic of Senshi fanservice. Overall, Kui handled the interview really well. Props to her to sticking to her guns and keeping a healthy disconnect from the fandom. While I think the interviewer could've/should've been more tactful and restrained, the flaws in their questions is not a symptom of the woke mind virus trying to wriggle its way into the pure Japanese psyche. It's the sign of an over-eager fan who sees a piece of fiction differently than its creator.

media literacy (and why it's so hard to be a horror fan in 2024)
a lot of my friends are really into Mouthwashing right now and when I asked if I'd like it, a few people immediately told me there's really heavy themes of rape and that might be upsetting for me. But then I found out there was cannibalism which is a surefire way to get me into a piece of media and that made me consider getting into it again. Ultimately after reading a plot summary I decided not to play Mouthwashing, and it's weird to be waxing so much meta about a game I haven't played and don't plan to, but in having the conversation I thought a little bit more about that difference. How it's weird that I'm willing to consume a piece of media if people eat human flesh in it, but get so uncomfortable with rape due to personal boundaries and like
Is cannibalism worse than rape? isn't it kind of the same thing? What's the difference between consuming someone's body for sustenance and using someone's body for pleasure? And with media, is it possible to use something terrible for good purposes? To me the answer to the last question is obviously yes; I'm strongly of the opinion that there's no subject too dark to discuss in a story. But most people could agree that there's a "right" and "Wrong" way to tell a story. If you make a movie that lingers on long unnecessary shots of women's bodies, that's probably navel-gazey and weird, and viewers may rightfully side-eye you a little bit. But if you make a movie about the exploitation of women's bodies - say something like the X trilogy where most characters are pornstars - it becomes almost necessary to have boobs and butts left and right or else your story won't be realistic.
It's weird to live in a time of more dark media than ever, contrasted with less media literacy than ever. Horror and dark litfic are extremely popular genres, but a lot of their audience seems unwilling to engage with those genres past a surface level analysis of "thing bad"/"thing problematic" or "you can write about thing, but not like that." If you write about a Bad Thing, you have to make sure that the text explicitly condemns it. If you have a point of view character who wouldn't condemn it, you need to make sure that character dies at the end so that the audience comes away from your story with the proper moral lesson. All fairy tales need to have a moral at the end; all horror stories need to as well, or at least, that's what fandom would have you believe.
But where do we draw the line, right? Is it okay to talk about cannibalism because that's not something that really happens in the modern world (assuming you're a sheltered westerner that is), but not okay to talk about rape because that's still something that happens everywhere to the point that almost everyone knows a rape survivor? Is it okay for someone who has never experienced rape and/or SA to write about it? Do we need to necessitate pain as a prerequisite to examine it's aftermath? have my meds kicked back in yet or should I up my dosage again?
And asking again because I'm curious what people think: is cannibalism worse than rape?

THE SHEPSCAPADES COMIC! That was to me (and from my perspective to the fandom) the turning point of “ok, im not imagining this”. It doesn’t change any dialogue or anything, it just gives the characters facial expressions and yet it’s almost impossible to interpret the interaction in any way other than the relationship not being good.
The dl era, to me, was a lot of trying to ignore the implication of ranchers fanon lore being that, for once, someone is being nice to Jimmy. People could see the difference in their interactions, which made the abusive behaviour all the more difficult to ignore, and yet acknowledging this directly would be labelled shipping discourse and no one wants to be THAT fan, right? But the tension growing was palpable.
I also would like to add that once I decided to scroll through anti-toxic fh blogs to try and understand why they think like that and… a lot of it was just “well it makes me feel gross”? And I get it. Cannibalism and mass murder are, to most of us, a very distant concept, so it’s more comfortable to engage with than the horrors of the mundane, especially when applied to a queer character. But that doesn’t mean it’s any better than talking about domestic abuse.
The last paragraph is phrased weird but i don’t know how to write it better so i hope it’s understandable.
That comic was patient zero in "oh my god other people see it too" for so many of us, I think. And yeah like you said it sticks very close to what happened taking into account tone of voice and everything. Adaptations of that sequence are like an almost surefire test to figure out what someone's interpretation of FH's relationship is and I think that's wonderful.
Big agree on the ranchers lore and I would argue Pearl's POV also has a similar effect where it forces you to acknowledge Scott not being the best ever. Funnily enough I watched the ranchers pov before the FH pov and didn't really see any of the post-FH horrors until I watched FH. I just kind of assumed when people said Tango was the first person who treated Jimmy as an equal they were putting "and Scott too but that was a season ago" in footnotes. But no they meant full-time and they'd be right lmao
My favourite example of Jimmy expecting the worst is this interaction he has with Bdubs where he essentially gets a bucket for free when the ranchers were struggling for iron and tells him to not tell Tango because he's scared he'll get yelled at. Like there is literally nothing Jimmy has done here that would be remotely considered reasonable to yell at him for but he's so afraid of having agency and making his own decisions at this point he just defaults to assuming his partner will be upset at him. (FYI I think this is more a result of how everyone treats him - Southlanders certainly did not help - but getting mad at Jimmy for doing literally anything except sit still was something Scott was especially privy to)
Don't worry I think your point was clear enough on that last paragraph, I kind of roll my eyes when people try to use distance as an excuse to justify why some dark topics are okay but others aren't, but I can't talk too much about this because I find it annoying and will probably end up saying something that feels mean lol.
Redirecting this once again to Bree's post about how hostile the language people use when talking about this discourse is to abuse victims e.g. "why can't you be NORMAL and write about NORMAL relationships and let them be NORMAL" which I think partially comes as a direct result of refusing to engage in abuse storylines and thus not being sympathetic to these portrayals or the people who write them.
And aside from that it's not even like. abuse and toxic relationships themselves are the issue sometimes. Obviously generalizing here a bit but I see a lot of the same people who find toxic fh "gross" gas up interpretations where Jimmy cheats on Scott or otherwise treats Scott horribly. Not to mention Pearl and her storyline getting turned into "girl who is mad gay man won't date her".
It just uh. sometimes feels as though the "grossness" is coming from a need to defend Scott's honour than a need to disengage with these themes entirely, which rubs me the wrong way.
(not to mention that I do think calling abuse storylines "gross" in of itself might have some unfun implications attached but I've said enough)

The amusing part about the whole “shipwar” issue was how bummy shippers painted buddie shippers as these nasty individuals who had no business being upset or furious.
Like any other fandom, I acknowledge that there are people in this one who are utterly repulsive and say questionable things, but what bothers me about the bummies, is how they exaggerated the situation. Because, in my opinion, what I saw when the shit was going down was actually very mild.
Like I genuinely have seen worse.
Now, personally, I never liked Tommy and was never neutral about him. I've been here since the beginning of the show, and I've seen that little dick behave like a racist, misogynistic jerk. So, no, I've never cared for him and never will.
Obviously, my natural reaction to other people's displeasure with Tommy's set-up was not to be upset. Because, as I previously stated, he has treated members of the 118 with such contempt. I thought it was very understandable that people disliked him.
But the way the bummies made it seem like not liking Tommy was a forbidden sin, and then couldn’t comprehend why people viewed liking Tommy—again, a racist/misogynistic man—as a bad thing was wild.
Of course people are gonna think you’re a weirdo for liking him, SOLEY because he kissed Buck, and then dismissing his shitty behavior- behavior that is sadly a lot of women and people of colors reality that they have to deal with everyday.
I was not surprised to find out that the vast majority of people justifying Tommy’s behavior were white people, cuz they LOVEEE dismissing shit like this for no reason. As long as it’s not an issue that affects them.
It is weird and bad that you would want Buck to be with a racist and sexist man with no redeeming qualities, just to satisfy your mlm desire. But, nah, let's be furious at the ones who have legitimate reasons to despise that dick.
And then making it seem like we didn't care about bucks bisexuality because we didn't agree with the idea of that dick stick being bucks LI? We didn't want Buck with that dick because we care deeply about his bisexuality and believe he deserves to explore himself with someone other than a huge fat bitch.
Somehow they managed to twist it and accuse us of homophobia.
I have never understood, and I never will, the pressure on others to like Tommy. That, in particular, was the most perplexing thing to me, and it helped me to realize that not everyone can think rationally.
Because there are valid reasons for people to detest a character, how are you going to get upset and start saying stupid shit just because people don’t like Tommy, because he engaged in behaviors that women and people of color experience in real life?
But all they had to say was
(1). “Y’all don’t care about bucks bisexuality”
(2). “Buddies are homophobic”
(3). “Let people ship who they want!”
(4). “Let us enjoy this!”
Over some asshole too.
They actually acted as if others were jumping them for no reason. They genuinely couldn't get how jumping ship because your favorite dude kissed a racist, misogynistic man and not exhibiting ANY concern that he kissed a RACIST, MISOGYNIST MAN just because Buck got to kiss a man is fetishistic as fuck.
They acted like the victims the entire time because people refused to tolerate it. So they altered their argument to "we jumped ship because of buddies behavior," and to this day I'm still trying to figure out what behavior they claimed was so terrible other than the fact that people were calling all their asses for being so fucking odd.
They were apart of the buddie shipper fandom weeks ago. They were apart of the group that “ran Oliver off twitter.” They were apart of the group that “ran the women off the show.” Crazy how when they were apart of the fandom, they didn’t speak up about the shit they’re not pulling out of their asses.
But now that they’ve jumped ship, oh it’s a big issue now.
And it’s so funny because they constantly tell on themselves all the time😭 the jokes be writing themselves.
“I didn’t jump ship because Buck kissed a man, I jumped because he was finally happy.” But when I go on your tumblr, Bree, to go see some of the support you showed when Buck was with Taylor since he was happy then too, I don’t see it? Why is that? So you just pick and choose when bucks happy right? As long as it fits your narrative right?
“Buck and Eddie are not co parents” but when I scroll down 5 months ago, everybody and their moms was calling Chris Bucks son and Buck a dad/second father figure.
“Eddies not a good dad/person” but you have Buckleydiaz as your username?
“We didn’t like Bucks other LI because they had no chemistry or build” but when Tommy pulled up out of ass crack with zero chemistry or build up, y’all still folded.
“Eddies a bad friend!” Yet, when I scrolled down your profile, all your asses were buddie shippers regardless.
“We didn’t like Taylor because she was bad.” Yet, tommy has treated members of the 118 like shit just like Taylor, in fact, maybe even worse. They both have treated members on the 118 horribly, interesting how they’re only excusing one of them tho. I wonder why.
They’re a bunch of losers I swear, and the vast majority of them are a bunch of old hags beefing with minors/young adults online over a damn fictional ship. Shits embarrassing. (No offense to all the good older people in the fandom, ily<3)
That weirdo Bree literally has kids and she’s out here triflin over a ship and going at it with literal teenagers. Get your shit together and maybe start putting food on your kids table because I know they’re hungry. you’re a whole grown ass messing with teens/young adults whose frontal lobes aren’t even fully developed while your kids are starving at home.
They would be so much more bearable if they literally didn’t try to dismantle every single dynamic between Buck and Eddie every single day.
And for no reason at all too. They want bucktommy endgame because they’re a bunch of fetishistic weirdos, and we want buddie for Actual LOGICAL reasons that makes sense and has substance.
Not only that, let’s not forget how
(1.) when Ryan Guzman did that podcast, talking about is mental health and past suicidal thoughts, a bunch of them were in the comments saying they wished he would’ve went through with killing himself.
You don’t have to be a fan of Ryan, and it’s 100% understandable if you’re not, but to fucking wish death upon a real living fucking person is disgusting, and suicide at that.
(2.) they decided to justify Tommy’s behavior by calling us ableist and claiming he’s autistic. I cannot even put into words how weird and nasty that is. Like you actually have to be dumb as fuck to go that low and justify an assholes obvious disinterest and behavior and double it down to “autism.”
Even if he was autistic—which he’s not—that doesn’t justify anything? You can be autistic and still be racist and misogynistic. That’s the shit y’all love to pull. The first time, they said Tommy’s behavior was justified because he was a closeted gay. When they realized people weren’t falling for that shit, they tried to switch it over and call us ableist and claim he was autistic.
It’s actually funny cuz it’s the complete opposite, cuz to associate shitty behavior to be autistic is so unbelievably ignorant.
(3.) They decided to contact and invade Tim’s privacy multiple times to the point Tim had to make it known that he only responds to not be rude.
(4.) They started bullying Oliver stark for not posting about bucktommy to the point that Oliver ended up allegedly blocking someone who asked why he wasn’t talking about it. (Which proves they were the mfs who ran Oliver off twitter)
(5.) They started to actually ship Lou and Oliver, two real life people.
(6.) They told people not to participate or donate to a charity event that was helping the people in Gaza just because one the mods in the server didn’t like bucktommy.
(7.) They thought it was okay to speak on Ryan and his characters identity claiming he was white and doubling him down to just that, while trying to erase his Mexican identity saying he wasn’t Mexican(he is.)
(8.) They started harassing journalists because they only mainly talked about buddie when they have stated multiple times that they’re buddie shippers, always have been even before tommy showed up and Oliver and Ryan have no issues discussing buddie anyways.
(9.) Completely dismissed the idea of having an openly queer MEXICAN character for other Latino/hispanic people to relate to because it would get in the way of their ship.
(10.) Called fans/stans of Eddie Diaz—a main Mexican character— “beanstalks.”
I’m still so shocked about this one because it was so unbelievably racist, and the person who came up with it is disgusting.
I’m sorry to any Mexican fans who had to witness that.
(If you’re confused, just to clarify, there is a slur used against Mexicans that starts with bean and ends with an er. Since Eddie is Mexican, they thought it would be funny to give Eddie fans an extremely racist under-toned nickname, hence “beanstalks” :/ )
(11.) They love to weaponize Ryan’s past actions as a way to deflect from the fact that Lous ass is just as fucking bad, but in reality don’t actually give a shit about what Ryan did or said and are only bringing it up to use Ryan’s past shitty behavior to deflect Lous shitty ass. Which is literally insane and stupid.
The list goes on. Yet buddie shippers are the bad ones, okay.

Something I'm always meaning to delve into more in terms of media/literary analysis is the idea that a lot of assumptions made about how writers/shows FEEL about various characters based on how a narrative treats them or is shaped around them....is better attributed to those things being symptomatic of the role those characters occupy in a story.
Like I just mean....Buck from 911 is a great example of this IMO. A very common trend in fandom w/fandom faves is to project heavily onto fave characters from the basis of 'this character, like me, is often unappreciated or taken advantage of or always ends up being the one apologizing even when its not fair or they weren't the one in the wrong.'
And to be clear, I'm not saying this with any sort of judgment. Hell, I do it with a lot of my faves too (cough cough Dick Grayson) bc like, ppl come to fandoms for a lot of different reasons and look to get different things out of fandom and fanfic and discussing meta & the like.....and that can often include using favorite characters as proxies to work out our personal frustrations about not being viewed or interacted with by the people in our lives in the ways that we would like to or feel like we deserve.
So there's an understandable element to ppl gravitating to (and projecting onto) characters that we view as mirroring situations or dynamics we've experienced in our own lives, and seeing them as an opportunity to give voice to complaints about them being mistreated/unappreciated by their friends & families...that maybe reflect things we sometimes feel about our own personal dynamics but keep to ourselves for fear of rocking the boat or worrying that maybe we actually are being unreasonable.
(Because after all, sometimes we ARE being unreasonable when feeling that 'so and so just doesn't UNDERSTAND what we were thinking/why we did something' and like, on some level we KNOW that and are aware that the adult thing to do is to just.....let it go....but before we do that, we've got to spend some time sitting in our Feels. Enter....fanfic and character proxies).
I mentioned Buck from 911 because he's a classic example of a white fave that's been woobified to hell and back by his fandom, with a disproportionate amount of fandom focus devoted to the times other characters do him wrong, or he's treated unfairly by a narrative or ends up apologizing despite not being the one at fault.....
BUT. Its not that people are pulling these instances completely out of their ass, IMO....there IS basis for fans feeling that certain storylines are at his expense.....
I just disagree with a lot of the conclusions drawn as to WHY these storylines play out these ways.
There's a tendency with fandom faves that are projected onto in these specific ways....to be seen or talked about as if they're a show or comic or book's designated punching bag. Like all this stuff happens to them, the narrative draws the wrong idea about who was right and who was wrong....because the writer(s) don't "get" or appreciate or maybe even LIKE the character as much as they do the other characters.
But in Buck's case at least, that's just 100% not a thing. That's not the issue. He's a clear fave of the writers, he's a central, if not THE central focus of the show nine out of ten times.....like. He's not neglected or unloved by the show or the writers or the narratives. He's just flat out not, lol.
And yet.....there are plenty of occasions where I would agree that the show makes some very weird (and even upsetting) choices when it comes to resolving his interpersonal conflicts with various other characters, or wrapping up one of his storylines. A lot of the "making up" scenes after a big fight DO have him caving, or being the one to apologize even if he wasn't the one instigating or engaging in the more obviously harmful behavior, etc. And it could even be argued that if you were to tally up all the times you think the show frames something as Buck being the one in the wrong or the one needing to do more to make things right, compared to the times the show frames other characters being blatantly wrong or needing to make amends.....these tallies would have Buck "in the lead."
But the thing is, you gotta look at the reasons WHY things shape out that way.
For instance:
1. Buck IS a clear central focus of the show....and that means he gets a disproportionate amount of the narrative's focus or screentime, compared to a lot of other characters. And when you're on screen more than most anyone else, then yes, you're going to be able to add up more examples of pretty much ANYTHING, relative to the other characters. That's a numbers game.
Buck is 'in the wrong' with more of the other characters, more often than any other character....because the show devotes more time & focus to HIS interpersonal conflicts. You're not often going to see Chimney being all mea culpa with Bobby after a big fight they have, compared to how many times the show has Buck framed that way....because (post Season One) the show just flat out doesn't SHOW Chimney and Bobby having interpersonal conflicts or dynamics to the same degree it has Buck and Bobby engaged in those.
2. In a procedural ensemble like 911, every character has a specific niche. And those niches play a huge role in how the writers approach setting up, crafting and resolving each character's solo storylines. This isn't a reflection of writer bias so much as narrative convenience. Buck's niche within the show is the little brother of Station 118, Maddie's little brother, Bobby's surrogate son, etc.
And so, when things need a quick resolution, the narrative has to cut corners to wrap up a solo character's C Plot so the episode can get back to focusing on its A and B plots.....yeah, a lot of times the writers default back to the simplest and most basic elements of older sibling/younger sibling, parent/child, mentor/protege dynamics.
And because of how we tend to approach those particular dynamics as a society in general....come crunch time, the writers aren't really looking to reinvent the wheel or choose the final ten minutes of an episode or seasonal arc as the ideal time to subvert expectations here.
So....a lot of times, yeah, Buck 'draws the short straw' and defers to the wisdom of his elders, is quicker to apologize or admit wrongdoing, chalk things up to being reckless or immature, even if that's not necessarily what the narrative UP to that point had been building towards....but this isn't because nobody understands Buck or appreciates him or thinks he can ever be the one in the right when fighting with Bobby or Eddie or Chimney or Maddie.....its because its just narratively more convenient for the writers, to steer things towards a resolution that dovetails into social expectations.
The surrogate child is more likely to be viewed as the one who needed to learn a lesson than the surrogate parent, the younger sibling has more to acknowledge or appreciate about what the older sibling does on their behalf, the less experienced firefighter is more likely to have jumped the gun or made the wrong call than his teammates who have years of experience over him.
These things aren't knocks against his character - at least that's not the intent in a lot of these resolutions, IMO - bc not every writing choice in a writer's room is made with the aim of being the optimal choice for that character. Sometimes its just....shooting deadlines means they need the final draft of the script, the showrunner tells whomever is doing final pass on the pages to get that climactic character conflict scene wrapped up, and when in doubt....go with the quickest and easiest way to bring those characters to a resolution.
Now, you can certainly argue whether or not this is good writing, or ideal prioritization....but I mean, that's kinda the point of fanfic, isn't it? To explore the aspects/elements/angles of characters and stories that the source material skimps on or leaves on the cutting room floor due to corporate interests, studio & editorial mandates, actor & budget & scheduling conflicts or limitations, etc. My point isn't "oh you should just accept these writing & character choices and never disagree with them ever" its just...."you should not default to assuming these writing and character choices obviously happened because Everybody Hates Buck."
Anyway, this is the point where tumblr glitched on me and gave me heartburn when this post abruptly disappeared and gave me a red bar saying "your post was too out of this world and you crashed the tumblr editor" so despite having more to say I will NOT be chancing it and thus here, have a completely random denoument, the end, and SCENE. This has been a post. Thanks for tuning in!

I suspect I know the answer but. AITA for "disappearing" from my online accounts pretty regularly?
I (22) have been fairly active in online fandom culture since I was ~13. Most of that has been on tumblr, some on twitter/tiktok/discord. I bounce around between different fandoms-- there's not really any one fandom that has stuck since I was a kid-- and I'm not a big creator. I don't do art, I occasionally write fanfic but never anything that's gotten super famous (which I'm cool with, I write for the enjoyment of myself and the like 5 other freaks who like the same things I do. it would honestly really bother me if I got too much attention.)
I also have some issues with paranoia and social detachment. I dealt with rather severe childhood abuse, which I'm not going to discuss, but which basically means I'm very emotionally detached. I have solo hobbies i really enjoy, and I like discussing common interests (like fandom stuff) with people, but I've never really had friends/romantic interests, and have zero interest in either of those things. The only people I'm really close to are my siblings. I'm definitely not an introvert, not shy/socially anxious, and not lonely. I have morals and care about society in a general sense, and I want the best for people, so I try to be polite and a Good Person as much as possible-- but ultimately I don't feel any kind of attachment to other people. I really don't want to hurt people, I just want to be left alone.
I really try to politely communicate this to people, since I've had quite a few incidents where I've been told I "lead people on", or people thinking we're friends and then getting upset when they realize I really don't care that much about them. It does make me feel bad to hurt others like that (and is also frustrating to deal with), but I can't exactly force myself to have emotions. I get along well with my irl coworkers/classmates/roommates, since they understand I just need a lot of space. Where I may be TA is with online friends.
About once every 6-12 months, I delete my entire online presence and start over. I orphan my ao3 fics, delete any and all accounts, and make sure my new accounts don't in any way link back to my old accounts. Usually when I do this it's because 1 I've changed interests and don't care about my old fandom, or 2 I feel like the people I know online start getting too close and emotionally attached to me. I usually post an explanation a few days before so people don't think something bad happened, saying that I'm going to be taking a break from social media for a while, and if anyone asks me for another way to contact me I just say I'm going to be completely offline. Then I just.... wipe everything and start over. I don't really know what my old mutuals are doing and don't particularly care? Like obviously I wish all the best for them, but I just don't think about them at all.
I've been doing this since I was a young teenager, but I was discussing fandom/social media presence with some irl classmates recently and brought it up. The reactions ranged from "weird but harmless" to "super mean and hurtful to the people you abandoned".
So: tumblr, AITA for disappearing?
What are these acronyms?

Of course RTD's fauxgressive dicksuckers are now using the latest episode to shit on Chibnall and Thasmin. First of all it is lesbophobic to not consider a relationship real/canon without an onscreen kiss, second the fetishization just reeks from the way people are talking about the Doctor as a slut and only acknowledging physical acts, third ew the antiBlackness in portraying this Doctor specifically as hypersexed that is literally a racist trope against Black men and a homophobic trope to boot. Oh and this episode being a weird response to criticism of the Loki series is obvious and embarrassing and should not be celebrated its literally tokenism and using representation as a pawn. Finally, the misogyny is evident in how fandom was just waiting for a MLM ship again to throw away and shit on the WLW ships.
I think these are all very valid reasons to be upset. We knew when 15 kissed another man people were going to come for Thasmin. They claim it doesn't exist, but they can't miss a chance to talk about it.
I've noticed that misogyny has always been in this fandom. But, I think having a female Doctor and her female love interest were 2 things that many people couldn't compute. And honestly, didn't really want to. Let's be real, most fans in this community are male. They rarely have to translate characters who differ from them, unlike women. Since childhood, women have done this when consuming media. Women were expected to see the male doctor's message and translate it through their own lens. That way we could empathize with it. You had to know how because there weren't as many female hero types.
Most men in this fandom had to figure out how to connect to a woman Doctor. Then, connect to a WLW relationship. Neither of these involves a man. And I think they just couldn't do it; they'll claim bad writing, but I think a lot of it was just not understanding. WLW relationships differ from straight and MLM relationships. They just do. The men couldn't see themselves in the Doctor or the love interest. So, they can't understand how deep the love can be there without it being physical. Just like there can be relationships that are purely physical and not very deep. WLW are often emotionally deep more so than the physical. I also think they didn't want to see themselves in the companions. Graham and Dan are great guys, yet they claimed Chibs hated white men. They didn't want to see themselves as the sidekick, they only want to be the hero.
Obviously some women didn't like it for some reason too. I wonder how many like the Doctor being a man because they are attracted to men. They like watching a good-looking guy save the day. I've watched a few Youtube videos where they have said as much. They had learned to connect with the Doctor as someone they would want to be with, not someone they wanted to be. I wonder how many of them are conservative and so just didn't like woke messaging. I wonder how many got sucked into hating it due to the bad faith online takes. They'd rather not like it and be in the online in-crowd than be piled on for every positive post.
It's frustrating and unfair. But, the world is unfair. This fanbase is a mess of hypocrisy. So, you'll never find any satisfaction in it. But 13 has a strong fan base as seen here on Tumblr and irl when ever Jodie and Mandip are at cons... Jodies lines are truely insane, and I know first hand from being in them. There are a lot of here who love it and we just need to remember that when we see takes that are ultimately designed to upset us.

hi! i saw your post about jimcurly and i'd like to say it's not for everyone, you're perfectly respectable if it makes you feel uncomfortable. it's certainly a very okay take to have! in that case, no one should ever make you feel bad for that. block the tag if it's what makes you feel better!
however, i think it might make you feel better about it to know that a lot of the people who ship it are very aware of the implications. i was concerned too, and it really exhausted me, but actively seeking out answers as to why they'd want to ship something like that really helped and i figured i'd share my perspective with you :)
i've noticed it very rarely comes with a softening of jim's abusive and predatory personality, and it's generally quite self-aware. they very much did play the same game, and it's just one of many ways they decided to look at the themes and interact with it under
i find it pretty unfounded to worry about these people ending up in toxic relationships of their own and being unable to get out of it: i've seen a lot of toxic pairings to actually be coping mechanisms to cope with older toxic relationships, and many of them come with a deep understanding of it. i get it as someone who has been in one!
if i'm being honest, i'm personally more alarmed by anyacurly that isn't self-aware than jimcurly that is, but honestly, i don't ship any of them because it's all kind of yuck to me.
either way, i think it's completely okay to be made uncomfortable by it. it's a heavy pairing, and i have the tag blocked so i don't see it. it's really their business imo i guess and taking that perspective made me feel a lot less upset about it :^)
(Cutting it here so it doesn't clog dashes!! Happy scrolling y'all)
Thank you!!! I really do appreciate this to no end. I know you won't get notifed when I post this but I do hope you find this. I appreciate the invitation for an actual conversation and wanting to shed light instead of uh the replies.
Im gonna be so real here, made that post at work, posted it, and uh here I am at home staring at my inbox (not including this ask dw!!) with slight confusion. And also being very real here, this isn't an apology post! I do apologize for not tagging it with a content warning, and being crass with my words, though you're gonna get that even if I'm speaking positively about something. Cussing is normal for me and I apologize if I came off as overly angry! I do want to reply to (and not being sarcastic at all here, I promise!! /gen) this anon who is being patient with me.
I do have the tag blocked, and I do feel better now. I'm a little less concerned knowing that people do see the implications and I'm really glad you mentioned it. I can't and won't speak on the coping mechanism aspect, I don't use it to cope and I've never been in a situation like this paring would cause. I will say however that yes, it is unfounded without context to be making broad statements like I did. I mean for those who take it very far. Farther than 90% of those who enjoy the pairing. I know the internet and I know it goes to insane lengths a great many times in the grand scheme outside of this Fandom.
You're 1000% right, I haven't really seen much anyacurly and haven't really gotten around to forming an opinion on it but it seems just as weird for me as this one. I think shipping in the game setting point blank, no aus or shifting of character is very.. off putting and to me depletes every purpose the game was trying to showcase.
And yes! Ship your blorbos I don't care, I don't like it, y'all love it apparently and I opened a can of worms that was unbeknownst to me outside my echo chamber. I made my post because I saw this amazingly worded one
And wanted to give my 3 cents on the topic, and obviously im not gonna repeat what they said in my own post. im not gonna steal someone's analysis.
And stepping away from the ask entirely right now:
this is sooo beyond me. I feel like I said I hate bakudeku and it's 2020. Also i think its funny that I also said jimmy can kill himself on the jimanya post, and im 1000% sure many others on here have said the same sediment. Honestly just block me man, I'm not entertaining anything on here, I have schoolwork and a job. I'm very happy to have a discussion though, like this!

having started watching Wild Life, my autistic ass is now trying to assign the wildcards to tma entities
the snails are easy, they're obviously hunt, but i'm not so sure about the others. the changing sizes in the first episode is kinda giving spiral? possibly flesh. and i think the food switching in the second one could be corruption? mainly based on the hunger/starvation/various poisoning effects
you're the only other person i've seen talk about both so uh. d'you have any thoughts?
- 🦴
(I have so many thoughts, this post is about to spiral so far out of control 'cus I love musing on stuff—)
I was actually thinking about this exactly while watching the latest episodes! The snails had initially struck me as corruption, being slimy little bug-adjacent creatures, but that's so purely aesthetic that the moment you see them in action it's just incredibly clear that they're just straight up The Hunt, as clear cut as it could possibly be tbh.
Maybe a bit of The End with the whole instant kill thing, the invincibility/immortality of the snails, and the kind of inevitability of the snails getting you eventually
The other two are definitely a lot harder
Session 2's gimmick of not being able to eat food / having to eat blocks, with it's themes of eating, kinda reminds me of a lot of Flesh statements in first thought tbh, but without any actual meat (and in fact, meat being the one thing they solidly can't eat) it just doesn't seem to follow through on more than a shallow level. Though maybe from the more fandom angle with the gore-ish-ness of teeth cracking on stone, and how bloody swallowing your own sword incorrectly would be, that kinda fits Flesh
Thinking on the actual energy of that gimmick as it played out in the videos, with the huge change and upset to normalcy that leads to catastrophic results and mass panic, I almost want to say it has some Extinction vibes, but without the "man made"/"we brought this upon ourselves" aspect I'm not sure it quite works out
The Corruption idea I don't think I would have thought of on my own, but it makes some sense too. The whole idea of food making you sick, or of all the other ill affects from just trying not to starve/die, the variety of ways you're almost guaranteed to get poisoned and hurt before you figure out something actually edible..
Corruption and Buried are also both fun to consider with the imagery of having to eat dirt and the like. Buried doesn't have any other relevance tho as far as I can think
Rhyme's suggested The Stranger, as it's solidly an example of the familiar being made unfamiliar, but most manifestations of The Stranger play very heavily on it being other people that are strange and weird, in my observations, so I'm not sure if it's quite right
Spiral also works well with the familiar being bad incomprehensible tho I think. The gimmick doesn't make them doubt reality, but it does rely a lot on them being confused and no longer being able to understand and rely on what should be such a basic backbone to reality (eating food makes you less hungry). A lot of the fear and panic on that session comes from that I think, the logic of world not working the way it should, which fits Spiral fairly well
Session 1 I honestly don't know about. The size changing mechanic didn't strike as much fear into everyone as the other two, which makes it a bit harder to categorize what fear it does cause
Maybe The Buried at times, because there were concerns about getting too big in spaces that were too small
Or The Vast, because of the whole "too big" idea in and of itself, and how getting too big could theoretically play into fear of heights (though it didn't much actually do so in the videos). It also had several incidents of falling to deaths, which is pretty fitting for The Vast. Vast feels like the most aesthetically fitting tho, with heights and sizes being pretty big things with it
Spiral and Flesh definitely make sense too though, playing off of the idea of your very self changing. Constantly shrinking and growing with only a certain level of control to it does kinda feel body-horror-ish, and the whole questioning if what even was changing and if their sizes were changing at the begining could also play into spiral ideas. The whole thing was a bit dream-like
Thinking about how the different fears can play into stuff is fun :]

This situation with Noah isn't a new problem in the fandom. These fans have been harassing everyone for months in them name of progressive causes they aren't well-informed about. This is obviously not specific to the Stranger Things fandom. Go anywhere online and you will likely see a bunch of teens screaming about something even though they clearly skipped the step of educating themselves. Not only have I been the target of the dumbest shit, but so many other people have too. No one can post here without someone getting self-righteous and yelling about it. I have been accused of the following simply for posting something to my own blog: - I've been called misogynistic because I said El wasn't the main character. A thing the writers have said several times now (it's Will). The writers aren't misogynistic either. - I've been called misogynistic because I said El has character flaws like everyone else. - I've been called a condescending bitch when I politely tried to explain what misogyny actually is. A thing you'd think they'd be interested in learning if they actually cared about that cause (clearly they don't or I wouldn't have been called a bitch so much). - Been called racist because I said Hopper wasn't copaganda, even though I explained clearly why I thought this was. - Got called racist because I pointed out that Lucas was often filling his Ranger role and that's why he is helping Mike in S3 (the boys all play their D&D characters). But the trendy thing to say at the time was that he was being written in racist way so obviously this means I'm racist too. - Had multiple people say I was silencing them when I wrote my own damn post (not a response to theirs) about many of the above topics. I just simply disagreed with their points and that isn't allowed here. - Had someone I never interacted with spread a rumor that I sent them anonymous hate filled asks even though I had no fucking clue who they were. And those posts were anonymous so they have no idea who actually sent them. They just wanted my attention. But I never sent anyone an anon ask before anyway so this was just bizarre. But a several people believed it. - Pretty much every adult on here has been accused of pedophilia for watching a show with kids on it. This gets pretty relentless sometimes. I'm sure I could think of several others and other people have had a lot as well. The thing about this as someone who has actually experienced things like misogyny first hand is that being called this is incredibly upsetting, especially when you are being called this by someone who doesn't know what they are talking about and doesn't care about the impact of these words. They just want you to shut up and stop telling them they did something wrong.
This is all happening because they are watching a show that is overwhelming them and they can't deal with people discussing it in a more nuanced way than they are. This wouldn't be happening if there were more adults here to drown it out. But as it is, no one can actually discuss this show and it has nothing to do with Noah. It's because kids are watching when they shouldn't. And they have weird, boundaries with the fandom and the cast that are constantly causing problems. This didn't happen back in the first 2 seasons because it was only adults watching. I'm not saying adults can't be problematic too, but most of this shit is from people who are way too young to handle this. And now we are all getting lectured by 14 year old foreign policy experts. It's not ok and they need to spend a lot of time learning about how to interact with people online better. This isn't the shows fault. But they can make it clear who this is actually for. Because these kids are going to throw a fit over everything. They always do. They aren't going to like S5 either. They are only watching because it's cool and they have FOMO. They can't understand it and are constantly insulting it and everyone associated with it and the fandom. Seriously, amp up the horror. Make it rated R. A lot of us would really love to be able to discuss this show and can't because of how awful it is here.

Your respond made me question if those “fans” will ever accept Sam’s new partner that is not Katrina (or Colby lol). The way i see it even Malia was more welcomed than Katelyn (although both of them had a cold start). I think nowadays i see more people loving Malia and actually accepting her, than hating on her. Thing that I fear Kateyn would not be ale to achieve if she stayed. And my only reason for that it’s because people felt too attached to Katrina, even people who supposedly “hated her” or claimed she is “using Sam” got used to her just being there and being Sam’s gf that i fear they will never let that go (especially that if i am not wrong Katrina is still single) and every other Sam’s new gf will be compared to Katrina and hated by the fandom, because for them “Katrina and Sam are clearly MADE for each other 😣”. I mean some people still act like she is Sam’s gf or like she is meant to come back, because “it’s her place”. So in that matter i kinda pity Sam.
i mean… that's kinda how i feel tbh lol
(another ramble session from me, sorry in advance)
the sam and kat thing is very odd to me, especially when you see fans say "he'll never do better than her". first and foremost, i get being upset that they ended, sure. but saying that sounds gross to me for some reason. like i think you can lift up kat and say she's gonna have a good life without him and will eventually find love without saying that he somehow is never gonna be happy again. that type of behavior and thought process is so childish. it's not like he was abusive, he broke up with her bc he just couldn't marry her and making her wait even longer would have been worse for their relationship.
while it's clear they aren't on the best of terms anymore, i think hating him (or her, bc god knows she gets hate too) is just weird. you don't have to hate either of them. their relationship didn't end in flames or bc they hate each other. you don't have to make it a versus all the time. there is no winner in this outcome.
as for katelyn and malia… the issue is messy. personally, i think both girls got the short end of the stick. they both got a crazy amount of hate (and malia still does) and i expected part of that to happen eventually when colby got a gf, but i think bc kat wasn't with sam anymore, it became like a shit storm instantly since it wasn't just colby getting a gf.
katelyn had so many lies spread about her in relation to kat it's not even funny. ppl were claiming they were friends before and thus she took sam from her (not true at all. they did possibly follow one another before hand, but their only connection was tess, who wasn't exactly bffls with kat). ppl claimed katelyn talked badly about kat, even tho all the clips i've seen have been not even remotely noteworthy, let alone something to throw hate at her for. i kinda think the reason why katelyn got a lot of hate is bc, as i've said countless times before on here, this fandom has an inability to critique sam. they will do everything in their power to not give him hell even tho they do it all the time to colby. so i weirdly think that bc this fandom couldn't be mad at sam for moving on too quickly from kat or for seemingly """replacing""" her, they chose katelyn to take their anger out on. but even that eventually wore itself thin and for the first time, i actually saw ppl genuinely hate on sam the same way they do colby. which was both refreshing and depressing all at the same time lol
i also think katelyn is just weird enough to be annoying to a lot of ppl, and bc of that, immediately she sucks. i obviously don't feel that way about her, but i can get why some wouldn't love her. in addition, i think she tried a bit too hard to be liked in this fandom and that drove ppl nuts. and she introduced colby to malia, which means she was public enemy #1 for a lot ppl. i mean, i literally heard someone full on dox her during a space on twitter and then call her a whore just bc she's dating sam. while the fandom wasn't in love with kat the moment they met her, they never went this far.
as for malia, i've seen some truly heinous shit said about her. like i'm talking fake dms with nudes (that obviously weren't hers), cheating allegations, fans making fun of her filler and boob job, fans calling her a whore and a slut for merely wanting to show off her body, she has no personality (even tho we've never even heard her speak so…. explain how you just know that), colby chose her over shea (which is just not true at all), the list goes on and on. i think the hate for her has calmed down a lot bc i think 1, she never tries to talk to fans except the occasional reply on a TikTok comment. i honestly think her not trying to befriend the fandom has worked out for her a lot more than katelyn's attempt at being our bestie. and 2, i think that bc colby shows her off (in a way that sam never did katelyn) we can see that colby is happy with malia. unless you're a hater; then bc they pose too much in pictures or *checks notes* never smile with one another that means they are faking it.
i do feel for sam, in a way, too. the thing is, i think out of the two of them, sam is the one that will speak up against the fandom, and he needs to do that. he needs to tell fans to chill the fuck out when it comes to his future significant others. like we cannot have a repeat next time he dates someone. it's just not gonna work out. but i also feel as if snc aren't gonna do that. i love them dearly, and idk who is in their ear telling them to do this (whether it be management or themselves) but them not sticking up for themselves or their gfs rubs me the wrong way. bc that's how you get a fandom like this that thinks hating on their gfs/themselves for a year straight is somehow okay. and god knows if i was dating one of them long term and they were just telling me to ignore the hate or not use an entire social media platform bc that's were a majority the hate was on… i would be going nuclear lol
like, it's either you tell your fans to calm down or i do. and since they ain't my fans, i don't have to be nice to them. so… pick your poison.

Okay so what are your headcanons for why Wenda did what she did? Like, did she just go crazy? Did she have a reason to hurt the people she went after?
I want to know all the lore of your au >:3
THANK YOU FOR ASKING BECAUSE I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS ABOUT WENDA FANDOM WILL ACTUALLY HATE ME FOR THIS I THINK!!! AND NORMAL PEOPLE WILL ALSO BUT NOT BECAUSE IT'S ALL WENDA BUT BECAUSE I HAVE A WEIRD APPROACH TO CHARACTERIZATION AND MY MORAL COMPASS WAS SWALLOWED BY THE SEA!!!
hi, ''after writing this essay'' t00nyah here, this might not make sense and be weird psychologically speaking, and might also break your brain if you try to understand my thought process, so sorry about that!
i CAN'T formulate what exactly it is i'm thinkig of, but in my head, wenda has always been a little off. she would take a candy from a baby(sky) and laugh about it. she's just not nice to be around sometimes. she has 'popular girl everyone adores but secretely hates her' archetype potential in my head i think. except this popular girl likely is annoyed by you breathing the same air as her to the point of hoping a car would ride over you as you speak to her. (obviously not directed at you)
but i'm also saying SOMETIMES. she's not always ACTING like that, she just has intrusive thoughts that slip out sometimes, she can be really fun too! but also sometimes her humor is too morbid for others.
i think BEFORE black sprunki incident she just had better control of it, but when she saw stuff going downhill she just took the chance to stop hiding what's going on in her mind and went really far, it's a bit of guilty pleasure for her (a bit because she doesn't feel that much guilt). so it's basically 'she kept having thoughts about hurting others, saw everyone getting hurt anyways and decided to join in'. it COULD be also related to black sprunki, i think the whole atmosphere got fucked up, but i do think that it just...always was in her head, just had to snap completely.
I THINK that those she targeted she did have a specific but incredibly petty grudge against though. it doesn't have to be understandable, it may be some VERY stupid irritation that she keeps transferring into disliking someone instead of seeing it for what it is. like you know for example seeing a couple kissing in public and wishing their heads would fucking explode in real time!! (haha probably not relatable to anyone else. haha.) so she's upset at pinki and oren, not with the fact that PDA just frustrate her. IT'S JUST AN EXAMPLE BTW. BUT IT'S THE CLOSEST I CAN COME UP WITH TO DESCRIBE WHAT I THINK IT COULD BE IN MY HEAD.
it's hard to formulate what i think like that because mostly i can IMAGINE how a character would act or respond to a situation in my head, but i can't generalized my impression about them, so this whole post feels a little off to me, but is probably the most accurate impression of wenda's character in my head. i'm probably making this a lot deeper than i should jhbksdfjkabfdas.

I'm not the anon who asked you about Millie but I wanted to add a comment... Millie said something about how she couldn't wait for ST to end because it was preventing her from working on other things and rumor has it people affiliated with the show were upset with her. I don't think this slashed her screen time. I don't think El is a main character the way the fandom makes her out to be. She isn't the focus of the show so I think this was always going to happen. But I think Millie said that because El wasn't the focus and she was forced to realize that by the time S5 came around and was annoyed about it.
I find it interesting that she is getting paid more than anyone else even though she is barely in next season. It makes me wonder if they paid her so that she wouldn't say more dumb shit in interviews when she is promoting the show. I get the impression she likes to be the star and the center of everything and never had a good grasp of what the show was about. Also from the little I have heard about her parents they seem to think she is the greatest actress of all time but she isn't actually better than anyone else in the cast. I think it messed with her head. She didn't make the show what it is. Millie just strikes me as someone who needs to be front and center and sounds kind of hard to get along with tbh. I don't get the impression she gets along with most of the cast either. She let the fans (particularly younger fans) convince her she was the lead when she wasn't and then got annoyed when the story started wrapping up and she wasn't in focus so she said a dumb thing. But I doubt the writers would be petty enough to cut her screen time because of it (she says a lot of questionable things in interviews that make me wonder how well she is following the show. And is also really rude to Finn a lot). Will was always the focus of the story regardless of what Millie does.
bestie. bestie,
i have to agree and disagree lol i get why people would feel that way about millie but idk if you’ve seen my previous asks about millie’s family but i tend to blame her parents. i don’t think there’s anything wrong with a little girl being confident and while i don’t know how she felt about everything she’s been through growing up, it’s obvious her parents inflated her… idk, i don’t want to say ego because i feel like that’s a weird thing to say about children in general? but it’s possible she thought she was important and the main focus of the show. — otoh, i don’t like how she started to feel small for talking ~too much~ during press bc she spoke the same amount as the boys. it’s giving misogyny. especially when sadie joined the cast and people are like omg why can’t millie be classy and demure like sadie… what 😭 i thought millie had great energy as a kid and while she’s definitely still extroverted like her bestie noah, she seems like she has to be composed… although she’s been coming out of her shell more since getting engaged. i hope that means she has more self agency and isn’t being controlled by her family, but at the same time, they’re always around her even nowadays. THEY LIVE NEXT DOOR. and it seems like millie is stuck with netflix for a while longer. idk much about the electric state but it’s supposed to have potential for a great adaption and to perform well at box office, but it’s being released on netflix?? all because daddy brown says so. fock that grifting loser.
i understand why millie is ready to move on from ST but i don’t think she meant it in a negative way, she’s just ready to grow up. she’s married now so it must be weird to be portraying a character who is 14-17, or however old el is supposed to be in s5. when people gave her shit for saying she doesn’t watch movies, i don’t exactly blame her. she was pretty much forced into the acting industry and yeah, she obviously enjoyed it for a while before reality caught up with her. i believe she’s fond of the show, if her 011 tattoo is anything to go by, but it must be a reminder that she only got famous because her dad is jobless and wanted to get rich quick after all his other schemes and business ventures flopped. he’s also the reason millie gets paid more than the rest of the kids. he’s such a scrub 😭
how is millie rude to finn btw?
thenks for sending this btw, i hope i’m not coming across as harsh or angry lmao idk why because i’m a very different person but i can relate to millie and feel angry on her behalf because her relatives are an absolute shower of cunts and idek if she’s aware of it … but i also get why some people find her off putting. as long as they don’t go too far fjfjsk cos she’s not that awful, surely.

right obviously you can dislike something for whatever reason you like, but the way you talk about it still has an impact on the world around you? when people limply reference to Homestuck being “problematic and Andrew being “problematic” it just evokes transphobic whisper campaign. this is how people treat trans girls on this website too, no? how many times have you seen camab trans people be avoided on “vibes” or “because they said something racist [citation needed]” like is it really necessary for you to contribute to a transphobic rhetoric in your discussion? you can just not like something you don’t have to act like there’s some deep political flaw with homestuck that makes it irreconcilably evil — people literally ONLY do this to camab trans people’s work, it’s nuts.
I understand that this means a lot to you, but my criticism of hussie and her work has nothing to do with their gender. you can criticize something while liking it, too. i agree that people criticize things harder when it's by someone whose TMA though, I've seen that happen. and I'm sorry that it's something that you need to look out for, truly. however, it's really strange to act like homestuck isn't very racist at times, though. do you not remember damara megido's entire existence? how about the manner of speaking of the condensce and other instances of them using aave in weird ass ways? people can grow and change yes, but i don't have to forgive racism and the groups she was racist against are ones im not part of.
I didn't say a thing about racism in my original posts, but somehow you knew to bring it up though... if hussies work spoke to you deeply, well, I'm glad you found something important to you even if it's something I really can't bring myself to like (speaking truthfully, "problematic reasons" aren't even my full reason for disliking it. honest! I was just in online fandom WAY too young, like 11 years old, and was the main moderator of a 15,000+ person homestuck facebook group for years, got taken advantage of by older people, etc.) I won't get further into it, but i don't like being called transphobic for just disliking a piece of media especially when I didn't even state my actual thoughts about it as a piece of literature, I just shared my broad opinion. I don't see how it's transphobic to dislike one piece of media created by a trans person. I never used the words "evil", I think that's unproductive and disingenuous when talking about literature, even if it's something i dislike more than homestuck.
if people take "I should go be transphobic now" out of "i hate homestuck and don't like the author much", that's their issue because they're not truly reading what I'm saying either and they suck. that is to say though, had i known that hussie was nonbinary before this entire thing unfolded, i would not have claimed she wasn't LGBT in my tags of that reblog. i haven't even read DTWOF and therefore don't have thoughts on it, i just had a visceral reaction to homestuck, remembered the hussie i made up in my mind over the course of 2014-2020, and said something rude that I wouldn't now. I'm sorry for how upset I've made you, but I'm allowed to have my own thoughts on a piece of media that's shaped a large part of my life.

same anon here. I feel like a lot of people don't talk about the problems with the show/you don't see people talking about it being racist because
a. a lot of the fandom is young and not really. media literate.
b. a lot of the fandom is white and is either racist, or just doesn't care because it doesn't bother them (obviously people who can't stand seeing racist shit over and over and over again are not going to like or watch lupin III ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
c. when people do talk about it they get ignored. I've seen people discuss this at length on other platforms and get dismissed repeatedly. idk about Tumblr but I've seen it elsewhere
idk. this isn't a you problem or anything, I just kind of wanted to explain my last ask a little bit more in detail. in my experience I've been alienated from the fandom repeatedly for talking about racism both in the show and in the fandom itself.
I understand, it's a bit weird to see people say "avoid the manga entirely because of the sexual assault elements" (even though it stops a bit later in the manga excluding maybe one chapter) yet enthusiastically recommend Part 2 despite the incredibly racist "jokes" throughout. It was honestly disgusting to watch the episode centered in Saudi Arabia as well as the other episode in an Arabic country which was centered around bombs and terrorism, and I can see why the racism throughout the series would drive someone away. Maybe our current fandom consists of a survivor bias where many POC who watched the show ultimately got driven away because of the racism, so the people who don't see too much of a problem with it or even agree with it fill fandom spaces (not saying that this has happened, but I've definitely dropped pieces of media for overt racism and the like).
I also see a similar fandom bias with the misogyny throughout and how it would mean that their favorite characters aren't always exactly well-written (the transphobia sometimes gets called out within fandom spaces, though not all the time). I get that Jigen is everyone's favorite and that Lupin's just a silly womanizer to the fandom but the misogyny, sexual assault, and just general "the villain of the week is a manipulative woman yet again" is in no way okay despite how much we all want to love the series. It's not funny to see Lupin flirt with underaged girls or unconsentually rip girls' tops off or Jigen hate all women as a collective whole or to see Fujiko demonized for actually being a cool character, and while the fandom has addressed some of these issues, I see a lot of "isn't it so funny that Jigen's a misogynist!" and "Part 2 is perfect!" despite the writers' treatment of female characters.
I second your point of "a lot of the fandom is young and not media literate," and I do wonder about this fandom's demographics from time to time. I think this does tie in with the blatant ignorance or sometimes even support towards Lupin III's problems, and it is upsetting to browse this fandom's spaces on the internet sometimes. I totally get why the racism would turn you away and I don't see a problem with not liking the show because of it, and I do think people need to be more respectful towards your views and towards other, similar criticisms of the show.

here’s a tamer one:
gimme all your unpopular stranger things opinions, pretty please!!
sav, bestie you know i love being controversial (sometimes) and i know that some of these may get me tumblr-cancelled or cause a fandom riot because most of them will be about billy (and by extension, max), but that’s not my problem.
billy and max genuinely cared about each other. i know, some of you are gonna look at that and say “how the fuck is that true??” but trust me. it is. both of them were forced into a shitty situation, and often took things out on each other because they were both misguided and trying to navigate things on their own. neil and susan obviously favored max, often neglecting billy and making him grow up on his own and way too fast. he was handling full-fledged adult responsibilities by the time he was sixteen, and he shouldn’t have been. now while i think susan may have tried to evenly delegate her attention to both kids, neil completely prohibited that under some false pretense such as “billy needs to grow up” or “he doesn’t need a mother anymore”. any time max screwed up, billy was left to deal with it instead of neil and susan handling it themselves, like parents should, not older siblings (though i believe had it not been for neil, susan would’ve taken care of max herself— i have some very complicated opinions on susan, but that’s another story). every time billy acted out in violence, it was a defense and survival mechanism for him; and he probably did it quite often to protect max because he cared for her, and for the fact that if he didn’t, he’d face neil’s wrath for the nth time (i.e.: the fight at byers’ home with steve— which, in billy’s defense, was totally justified from his point of view). anyway, max and billy cared about each other in their own weird little way.
more on the topic of billy, he wasn’t racist and he didn’t target or dislike lucas simply because he was black. that’s just a bullshit reason that 98% of the fandom uses to justify why they hate billy because they couldn’t read context clues and use some critical thinking skills. he disliked lucas because he witnessed lucas and max arguing in the school parking lot, and lucas was upsetting max— and billy knew that it would be his ass if neil found out about it.
i think the whole “girlboss” angle they’re trying to do with nancy kinda sucks and it’s ruining her character. she was definitely a stronger character in season 2 than any other season.
the series started with will, and it should end with will. i said what i said.
max stabbing billy with a needle and syringe with no idea what was in it is not the girlboss moment y’all think it is. what was in that syringe could’ve killed him for all anyone knew.
the sauna scene was genuinely billy begging for max to help him because he didn’t know what was going on, until it wasn’t, and max knew that was billy and not the mindflayer.
speaking of the whole mindflayer thing, y’all can’t tell me that max didn’t genuinely care about billy when she said “i really hope it’s not you” in reference to the party suspecting that billy was the host.
oh and in season two when billy’s “threatening” to run over the boys?? y’all are delusional for thinking he really would lmao he’s an older brother and older brothers mess with their sisters like that. and he’s a seventeen year old with a cool, fast car. there’s no way he was gonna willingly get himself a vehicular homicide charge in a bumfuck town in indiana. y’all are dumb as shit for thinking he would. and did y’all notice when max grabbed the wheel and made the car swerve to avoid hitting them? billy could’ve easily gone against her force and kept the car on course, but he didn’t.
stancy shippers are essentially romanticizing a toxic relationship between two people who very clearly want different things for themselves and could never actually work, from a logical and realistic viewpoint.
on that note, stancy should not happen in season five. or ever again for that matter. fight me about it.
karen wheeler’s actions in season three can’t be justified. i’m not even gonna argue on this one with anyone because y’all know what happened. sure she chose her family in the end, but she was really about to go hook up with a freshly-18 year old man while being in her 40s…absolutely not, ma’am. don’t even get me started on the other pool-lurking moms.
it’s game night, send one of these!
