Subaru and Seishirou are from Tokyo Babylon, it's a BL manga so they're a canon couple, they're just messy about it. The adaptations didn't want to be BL though so they censored literally the main plot of the manga
1 .thank you for this
2. i am going to go look up the Tokyo Babylon manga now
3. figures. that adaptation censored. -.-
#tokyo babylon#anonymous#replies#ask#to read#so unrelated but yesterday i was looking up if the devilman manga/anime etc is gay#for a few reasons. mainly i saw Devilman Crybaby in a rec list of Actually Queer animes and#i was like mmm i am slightly doubtful. since the manga is considered 'subtext'#but the answer apparently was: its complicated?#i guess in the old anime (not just the new 2000s one). akira had a gf and ryo was in love with him#and im reading the manga and. that may well be manga plot too#so im not really sure if the old anime 'watered it down' or if the new Devilman Crybaby 'played it up' but id say all of them#seem to be in a Xena Warrior Princess grey zone#i know thats unrelated though lol#when i looked up tokyo babylon it was a clamp manga? and i knew clamp manga did actual queer characters before#unrelated also: i love the manga i get into lol. i still have no idea whats airing rn or printing rn#but i find a new old manga to check out every week

I found this by one of my (ex) moots who have unfollow me, cause now they're anti -JJK :
"JJK really went from a loved manga to a mid-to-bad story with insufferable fans 🙏 may more of us hate it in the future. It snatches the spotlight from genuinely good shows and its another case of "general shonen fan will call any trash 'goat' if the fight is well animated".
I used to be a fan, until the start of the culling game. And after this controversial, inconsistent and inhumane adaptation of shibuya, im glad that I have no interest in both manga and show anymore"
Do you think Culling game is hard to understand, cause several of my (ex) moots also start dislike JJK after that arc?
I can't speak for everyone who dislikes jjk, but I think for most people who dislike the Culling Games, it's a sort of recency bias (except in the opposite way it's usually used). Many criticisms levied against the Culling Game were also said during the Shibuya arc as it was coming out and are showing up again, now that it has been animated. Things like "too many fights", "I don't care about these new characters", "the pacing is shit", "killing too many main characters makes deaths meaningless", "Yuuji isn't even the main character anymore" are often said for the Culling Game arcs, but also something I now see a lot from anime-onlys for the Shibuya arc. It's just how Gege writes and either you like it or you don't. A lot has also to do with binge-reading something and reading it weekly (especially if you don't reread chapters). The flow of action and payoffs are much more apparent when you binge something than when you have to wait for little titbits of the story to come out and stew for weeks over setups for later plot points. Any minor grievances you have are also easier forgotten when you read the full story. Problems like "I don't know what's going on or who these characters are and therefore I don't care" show up a lot when you aren't used to or don't like reading something weekly. There are people who complain that they don't know who Higuruma or Kashimo are, when it is very easy to remember that if you just keep the story in mind, reread past chapters or only read full arcs. They certainly don't lack characterization. Gege's writing definitely has flaws, especially recently, but we got to know plenty about Higuruma, Kashimo, Takaba etc.. Someone might not like them or isn't interested in their stories because of personal taste, but that's not Gege's fault. I for example like the Culling Game much more than Shibuya or Hidden Inventory and I think Shibuya can drag a lot at certain parts, but the highlights still make it a good arc. Perfect Preparation and Culling Game just has more to offer to me because it focuses on different characters and I like the new ones generally much more than say the Kyoto school group. Each of the new characters have tons more depth than any of the curse users that worked for Kenjaku previously and thereby liven things up a lot. Not to mention more lore. Thing is, if your favourite characters appear less and you don't like the new ones much, that will inevitably turn you off the story. That's valid, but personal taste is subjective, it's not what makes the story bad.
There are plenty criticisms to be made and you can clearly tell that Gege is rushing some parts of the story now, so I can understand if people stop reading because of that, but it's a matter of if the highs outweigh the lows. As whole arcs, I definitely don't think Culling Game is any worse than Shibuya. Or that Perfect Preparation is worse than Hidden Inventory (I think those are better to compare, since HI has a very different focus and is much shorter than Shibuya or CG). I'm a bit sceptical about the final fight against Sukuna in Shinjuku (excluding Kenjaku's part and Hakari vs Uraume from this for now, I liked those), but there's enough there to keep me invested and continue reading. I can understand though if that's not the case for others. Similar for the controversial timeskip and don't even get me started on Sukuna vs Gojo. Some criticism I don't agree with (sorry but Takaba vs Kenjaku was actually good), but there are other valid points to be made. For example, I recently saw a discussion on twt about how we are barely shown Gojo interacting with the students he supposedly cares about. I can totally understand that, especially when we are given more flashbacks to what happened during the timeskip and Gojo isn't in any of them and apparently not invested in what his students and friends are gonna do in case he dies. It does give the impression that he just doesn't give a shit about any of them anymore and it doesn't help his lack of characterization and character development post-unsealing.
Generally, I think it's best for these people who are "anti-jjk" to just drop the show if they can't enjoy anything about it at all. There are many more mangas, animes or other stories out there they could read/watch, instead of forcing themselves through something they don't like. I do that with plenty of stories as well. So if your ex moot decides to drop the manga and anime because they don't like it anymore, good. Find something else.
I think their criticism that jjk "snatches the spotlight from genuinely good shows" makes no sense though. That isn't even the case within the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump. If something is good, people will read it. Look at the boom for Kagurabachi, a series that just started and is already loved and continuously in the top 10 of the Jump App. People can read multiple stories at the same time, that's the whole reason these magazines don't just feature one manga. Sure, some really good stories out there are less popular, but that's not because of jjk. JJK being popular doesn't stop me from reading Houseki no Kuni or Monster, mangas that aren't as well known. One Piece or Pokemon aren't stealing anything from jjk, so why would that be the case for jjk and some lesser known manga. There are more complicated reasons for why something is getting less traction than just "series x has gained popularity". And I don't like powerscalers or your average blue checkmark anime fan on twt either, but then just ignore them. They are in every shonen fandom (and seinen and shoujo, although in case of shoujo it's a little different but not less obnoxious). Other fans having shit tastes isn't new or unique to jjk. That's just fandom.
Either way, glad this person moved on to another series, may they be happier there.

ranking anime pt 1
ranking a few of my favourite animes in terms of plot and characters
Bungo Stray Dogs (the manga) i'm actually a pretty new fan but its def the best mangas i've ever read. and notice how i say manga, not anime. the anime actually kind of sucks. the plot is very interesting and intriguing, and all the characters are very well-written. idk where asagiri got the idea of taking historical poets and authors and turning them into hot manga characters from, but i love it. its a very cool concept. you def need to read all the side stories to understand whats happening at times, but you can easily find the side stories on sus illegal websites or just buy them (or watch the anime adaptations). atsushi is a well-written main character and dazai's personality literally has my mind running in circles. this is a manga that makes you think a lot, but if you like literature, def give Bungo Stray Dogs a shot. you won't regret it!
Toilet Bound Hanako-kun (the manga) notice how i said manga again (the anime could do so much better). the art style for this book is AMAZING and the characters are SO WELLWRITTEN. like the title is a bit weird you I SWEAR YOU WONT REGRET IT IF YOU READ IT. its literally the best mixture of romance, comedy, horror, and mystery. its sort of a slowburn and i wish hanako's backstory will be revealed soon because im literally dying to know what ACTUALLy happened between him and tsukasa. and i want to know how nene and hanako's relationship grows!
Spy x Family this is the perfect comedy-action anime to watch with your family and friends. the concept is cool and its fun to see how anya, loid, and yor's relationship grows! I want to know what will happen at the end and if loid and yor actually stay together. its a very good anime and i highly recommend it.
Jujutsu Kaisen i'm a fairly new fan of jjk but i really love it! at first i had to read it a couple times because of all the fast explanations for cursed energy and stuff, but i think i've memorized it all now. yuji is a very interesting main character, and its nice to see his internal struggles with hosting the most evil cursed monster alive. his struggles of accepting his fate and his struggles of losing the people he loves is something that i like seeing (not in a sadistic way) because it accurately shows his character development. i love the strong female characters (shoko, maki, utahime, etc etc) and the subtle inclusion of the lgbtq community (kirara, mai, megumi, etc etc). the character developments in this series in CRAZYY like i actually love it so much. what i don't like is how some of the explanations are a little nonsensical and they pass over the important stuff too quickly. but overall, its a very good series and i recommend it!
Sk8 the Infinity i was so sad when season one of Sk8 ended, because it was really good. i hope they make season two soon. sk8 is so good because it shows reki's struggles, just like how gege shows itadori's struggles. the characters develop nicely, and the relationships between the characters are shown nicely. its a very fruity anime that i HOPE will end like yuri on ice (with reki and langa getting together BECAUSE I WOULD LOVE FOR IT TO BE CANON) its short but sweet and i highly recommend!
The Promised Neverland (the manga) i CANNOT express how much i DESPISE the anime. i HATE IT SO FCKING MUCH. anyways, the manga is pretty good. its another series that works your brain a lot, and it kinda makes me sad because there are literal eleven year olds being smarter than me 😭i personally really like isabella and yugo's characters, and i sort of dislike emma's desire to save the demons. like girliepop pulled the main character card and said "i wanna save everyone so no one has to suffer!" personally i would've gone with norman and ray's plan sooooooo....i also dislike how emma loses her memory at the end. i know it was really important, but i wish she could've gotten her memories back after reuniting with them again because in the canon manga, she CANT remember a SINGLE THING which means ALL THE THINGS SHE DID WITH HER FAMILY are just GONE. i actually screamed when i read that she never got her memory back. i also wish the author had maybe specified a bit more on isabella and ray's relationship as mother and son. anyways, a pretty decent story with good characters.
Demonslayer this is actually my favourite anime. I love it so much. ive read the manga over ten times and it has tanjiro, one of my all-time favourite anime characters. the reason its ranked so low is because of how simple the plot is and how it sort of repeats the action scenes. some of the characters could def be written better, but there was a lot of very good characters as well. tanjiro's character is written so well, and so is shinobu's. i wish we saw more of rengoku before he was killed off after like thirty minutes of screentime, and i wish the author hadn't killed off obanai and mitsuri at the end. that kind of made me mad. but they were reincarnated happily, so its ok! there are some nonsensical explanations and some random things here and there. people say its only because of the animation, and even though the animation is what makes it popular, i personally think that the story itself isn't that bad. its good, and i recommend.
Haikyuu haikyuu is like THE sport anime. its good and its actually taught me alot about volleyball. its also the reason i started playing volleyball. im the libero on my team 💪 its very exaggerated, but the characters are well written and the team's struggle as a whole is laid out well. i like the concept and the main character (hinata) is acc so funny like i love him so much. its the first anime i watched, and its def not the genre i would watch as a first choice, but for a sports anime, haikyuu is really wellmade. the reason its ranked low is because i'm not very interested in it anymore/not really my thing
My Hero Academia i was OBSESSED with this last year. like it was the literal reason i was living. but now that i go back to read it again, its sort of repetitive and deku has become WAYYYY too OP. it started off with a cool concept, but the author has been dragging it out for wayy too long. the fighting scenes are all the same and deku needs to put aside his "good side" and actually take actions that will be for the better, like KILLING OF SHIGARAKI INSTEAD OF WANTING TO 'SAVE HIM' LIKE WHAT?? i also hate how uraraka's whole personality has just become "i have a crush on deku" and i kinda hate how the author portrays uraraka's relationship with toga. i actually kind of despise this anime.
and yeah there you have it :)

hi! i didnt have much success when looking through ur blog to see if uve addressed this alrdy so apologies if u have.
i was curious to know ur thoughts on jjk's portrayals of gender, esp women/femininity. if u have particular insight from a psych or philosophy bg, id be interested in hearing that (warning, i have a v feminist critique lens)
ik u love gege's writing 😅 but his handle on female characters/femininity has given me such a difficult relationship w jjk, and its v difficult to have discourse on it. on one hand, we're introduced to sm interesting realistic women, tbh i actually never stanned a woman in manga before jjk. but imo it cant be denied that gege is a sexist writer. despite how realistic jjk women r theyre all .. halfwritten? i cant think of a single one who isnt underwritten, not fully explored, not utilized substantially in the plot, etc. and there r sm ex's of extremely minor male characters in jjk who r given more thematic relevance than frequently recurring women that just underscores that gender gap imo
this isnt solely a gege problem ik but what bothers me in particular about jjk vs other mangas is how gege addresses strength, even in the light of nb/androgynous characters, and how it feels as if gege's def of strength is inherently masculine? even despite going so far as to give us a philosophical battle shonen w diverse reps of gender and emphasizing individuality that encompasses both femme/masc traits
how a reader interprets whether a jjk woman is strong or not is obv subjective. like, i think shoko is strong but shes not depicted as such bc she doesnt have a combative technique whereas yuki maki nobara or mei r depicted as "strong" bc of their battle abilities. but it also feels as if those women r strong bc they take on "masculine" traits/mindsets whereas there r no clear depictions of "femininity" making women or men stronger. even utahime who falls into v classic shoujo girl tropes is seen as weak despite teaching her students v proficientally in battle strategy (mechamaru v mahito is a good ex of that imo), as compared to how gojo teaches his (ie dumping them into missions for experience). but thats not what gege ever chooses to highlight
femininity also doesnt even seem to make men/nb characters stronger. the ex's i can think of r naoya as a vagina (lmao), geto as a mother to curses, yuta as highly attuned to his emotions, kenjaku as yuji's mother -- those r things that support these (mostly) men's strong sense of individuality but like, those arent really the things that lend those characters their "strength", u know? like geges just sprinkling in androgyny for the spice 🧐
what is feminine vs masculine, how an individual embodies those traits in their gender identity r already complex topics. im obv generalizing a lot here, but i just, idk despite how many other nuanced philosophies gege explores, what is strong/desirable in jjk still falls down to all-out fighting abilities/physical prowess, emotional detachment, isolation, extremism, etc -- all things we harp on toxic masculinity for. and even when he critiques that, theres no cogent counter solution/way to be strong that gege provides, much less one that incorporates "femininity" and women
maybe im just asking for too much from gege after having read so many great representations of women and gender by female (and male) mangakas/writers but.. i shouldnt be 🙄 he can utilize his female characters more imo, esp when he can clearly set them up so well. and im sure theres things ive misread about jjk and its portrayal of femininity, theres plenty of holes in my thoughts ^^ anyways, this is obv not a great topic to bring up in a fandom that is so polarized between dudebros and women w unaddressed internalized misogyny.. so i welcome any and all thoughts and interpretations on ur end! (also omg im rlly sorry this got so long)
I love you feminist anon, if I may call you that lol, I just always name my anons 😂. I am so grateful that you sent this.
I feel like you've very eloquently explained the deeper reason as to why I personally can't relate to the female characters in jjk. If I'm honest, I like them and think they are fun and good enough representations or attempts at depicting the archetypes that rule their personalities.
As you say, however, some of them remain rather superficial and underutilized... and please forgive me anyone who loves them, but some of them feel like they are basically dudes wearing skirts.
No offense to dudes who wear skirts or people who like men who wear skirts or anyone for that matter. It's just that, as a personal preference, I like female characters that wear skirts, pants, leggings, etc and have equal amounts of masculine and feminine energy.
So, even if I find they are good enough, I've never necessarily loved jjk female characters, because, as you also say, I've read/seen one too many amazing and iconic female characters by other authors...
And it's not like I think you're asking for too much from Gege in wanting better female characters, it's just that, as you also said, I like his writing and I read jjk precisely because of what it's doing for my masculine psyche. Like... quite literally.
So perhaps I'm more forgiving than you are because of it? Because in all reality, there are female character moments in other manga that I have to give the bombastic side eye to, and jjk isn't one of them.
Let's taco'bout it more under the cut.
So, that said, I have to admit that you might not find a lot of "feminist oriented" content in my blog because my feminist lens is reserved for dealing with lame dudebros in my real life, and also, I honestly do not know how to wear the lens on the same level of depth as you do.
Also, since my blog's lens is depth psych, I very much focus on femininity and masculinity as psychological qualities that exist on opposite ends of a continuum regardless of biological gender. You'll see me refer to femininity and masculinity like this throughout my answer.
So because of this, I'm coming at the whole issue from a slightly different angle than you are. The way I see it, I think the way the jjk female characters are written and thematically utilized (basically everything you said), ultimately comes back to how Gege's exploration of femininity is limited by his own sense of self, and very much likely biased by the sociocultural landscape he grew up in.
I don't know how much you know about Japan, but Japan has one foot in the future, and one foot in the past...
And like... ok I'm totally oversimplifying the whole thing. All I'm saying is... Gege is a man who grew up in a man's world, sharing his view of the world through jjk, which is a story about initiation of the male psyche that is published in a magazine for young boys.
Do you see the pattern there?
So If you feel like his female characters are underutilized and underexplored, and that thematically jjk focuses way too much on masculinity and masculine definitions of strength at the expense of the feminine archetypes he does present (like Naoya as a vagina LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL)... well... to me, we're basically looking at the limits of his own relationship to his femininity, which, this relationship is in turn an imperative precursor for psychospiritual development in depth psych. More of this in a bit.
Anyways, that's my anticlimactic reasoning for why I am more forgiving about the issue than you are. To be honest, I've been so consumed exploring my masculine psyche through jjk (because personally my feminine psyche is more developed in certain aspects) that I just never focus on the female characters (that is not to mention what I shared earlier).
ANYWAYS, I fucking love what you wrote about Gege's exploration on power from a masculine perspective because you're 100% spot on. What I'll say to that is that, to me, from a depth psych perspective, that's kind of the whole point.
I invite you to look at it from this other level of perspective (in addition to the whole "Gege's psych is a product of his upbringing"): the whole idea of individuality and focusing on the sense of self as a measure of "The Strongest" is being shown as an incomplete part of the equation...
... that leaves "the strongest" ultimately feeling dissatisfied.
This is a sentiment echoed by several characters because ego strength (masculine definitions of strength) is ultimately an unbalanced measure of strength precisely because it ignores feminine values and measures of strength.
Who knows where Gege is taking jjk at this point, but I will admit I am hoping he is going to explore this in more depth because, central to Jungian thought and depth psych is the idea of the Buddhist middle path and union of opposites.
In Jungian psych this means that, when you have an unbalanced ego attitude like that, something has to give so that the pendulum swings in the opposite direction, which gives the ego the experiences it needs to integrate the "opposite" attitude. This ultimately results in a more holistic and balanced perspective for the ego.
That to say that I'm wondering if Gege is going to make the pendulum swing in the opposite direction with the whole "individuality" idea since self-preservation is a "masculine" trait. Again, psychologically, it's all about balance, and right now, the story is out of balance in favor of the masculine traits you mention.
But... to bring it back to Gege's possible limitations around his perception of femininity and how developing a healthy relationship to his anima (femininity) is a precursor for psychospiritual development... what if, on a meta level, jjk is depicting part of Gege's journey towards integrating and deepening his relationship to his femininity and what you're seeing is the beginning of that journey?
Hint hint Tsumiki! maybe I'll write about it someday
This is the thing... In depth psychology, more specifically what is called "the psychology of fairy tales", fairy tales and myths are stories that depict the thinking patterns of a peoples through metaphor and symbol. The characters in these myths and stories are thus characters playing out dramas in our own psyches. So basically, think of jjk as an objective exploration of Gege's subjectiveness (psyche).
Admittedly, even if the pendulum swings in the other direction (more feminine definitions of strength), you might find that his exploration is rather shallow or that it falls short of your expectations for what you'd like to see from a feminist perspective. And you wouldn't be wrong for it, it's just that Gege is probably not on the same level of understanding that you have about femininity because he's, like you and I, a human on a journey of self understanding and growth reflecting on how his environment has shaped who he is.
The same goes for women with internalized misogyny. Sometimes you don't know what you don't know, and coming to an understanding of it is a process that doesn't take place overnight.
So I think the only part I'll disagree with is that Gege is a sexist writer. But that's perhaps because I'm being a bit too technical in what sexist means? i.e. masc supremacy or hating women and perpetuating stereotypes. I think that rather than being sexist, his unconscious biases are showing, which is why someone like you can pick them out.
I do understand where you're coming from though, and admittedly perhaps I am being too forgiving of him.
Last thing I'll say is that I've said a couple of times that wanting for jjk to have these iconic female characters feels like an exercise in futility. In retrospect, I now understand that it's not that anyone shouldn't want for jjk to have iconic female characters, but that doesn't change the fact that jjk will probably remain the wrong manga to look for them, and that's something to make peace with because it is what it is.
So, here's to hoping we get a chance to see a deeper representation of feminine values in jjk or Gege's next manga. Because, if he's done such beautiful work with the masculine psyche, like you, I'd be curious to see what he makes of a deeper exploration of the feminine psyche.
Between you and I, I'd actually love reading a proper battle bl from Gege. And I mean proper. Like... gays so canon that even the dudebros can't deny it.
ANYWAYS... giiiiiiiirl what an ask 😮💨. I don't think I've done it justice tbh. But hopefully I made sense? I really do love what you wrote. It was very eye opening to see this age-old argument spelled out the way you did it. So thank you again for sharing your thoughts!
If you over have any other thoughts on the topic I look forward to hearing from you!
I rambled too so... hopefully I made sense 🤣.

reasons why i think my parents pissed off a fairy before i was born (why i think im cursed)
cursed pieces of media always seem to find me
im not exaggerating when i say ive seen more than my fair share of fucked up stuff. it always seems to land on my cellular device or my piece of paper. ill be simply enjoying a show or consuming a book as one does and the most heinous thing will happen and ill be expected to just carry on. and now i do just that, i keep calm and carry on. more specifically theres one topic that seems to pop up a lot (tw!!) incest.....now now you may be thinking "what!? incest....id drop whatever it was and go reconnect with nature...weirdo" now now lets not jump to conclusions, 9/10 that movie/book/manga/whatever is actually really good (the other 1/10 lands you in therapy) and the incest or whatever never progresses the plot at all, but is a big enough plotwist to give me whiplash. and dont you worry, ive got an example. last year, i needed a book so i went to my schools library with a friend. about 10 mins of searching resulted in no book i felt inclined to read....until my friend gasps, a book in her hands..."Shadowhunters"?? i had never heard of it but apparently it was a big part of her childhood, something that soothed the gaping hole Twilight left...okay ill read i said. reading the first few chapters was great, i could practically smell an enemies to lovers and the big mystery of who and where mc's brother is was lingering in the back, my type of book i thought happily. little did i know....mc and ml were infact revealed to be siblings......i dropped my book. i had already thought it was weird that ml's adoptive brother had a crush on him but that gets crushed quick and now this...? now you may be thinking isnt it illegal or sum to promote incest..? and yes u are right, so you can imagine my deep sense of relief i felt when mc and ml were infact not related... because i didnt know how much more i could take of the ml yearning for his literal sister..(he was relentless...). but it doesnt stop there, for all you sickos out there, the author still managed to weasel some incest in. when the ml and mc are still believed to be siblings by them and everyone, another ml enters, this boy is perfect, maybe even a better fit for mc, girl is feeling it too. turns out this second guy is none other than.....her brother !! shocked you didnt it...(hes completely sick and knows the entire time....he wants his sister). but dont worry guys other than that, Shadowhunters is really good, character development? chefs kiss. i luv isabelle.
all my pens perish
im not exaggerating when i say i probably go through 6 pens a week, either they explode in my school blazer, completely new pens dry out in my pencil case, snap or most common cause, i lose them. i try pencil and the lead snaps in the middle so now matter how much i sharpen it, it will never be useful again. this is a cry for help, any stationary reccs??
i lose everything all the time
would you believe me if i said ive lost my keys a total of 5 times this year? well dont. because ive lost them 7 times and only 3 of the times have they been returned. im a regular at the keymaker.... how many of you can you say that??? i hope none, i wouldnt wish this on my worst enemy. i think this 'losing stuff' thing ties in rather nicely into my fish memory too, im pretty convinced ive got a rare amnesia that hasnt been discovered yet. its almost impossible, scratch that, it is impossible for me to remember everything for school the next day, ill always forget at least one thing. my friends will try referencing a supposedly funny/memorable thing that happened and ill just stare. theyll stare back and then do everything in their power to try to make me remember...nothing works.
my friends always have the same crushes as me
you may be thinking, well thats kind of normal for a group of girls that hang around eachother to have the same taste in people and i i thought so too, until it was such a regular thing i just stopped telling them about my crushes. i do have a story, start scene-its the end of a history lesson and im really happy, its been good lesson and i love history. im abit tired because its P5, the end of the day, for that reason, im lagging just a little, i leave my book usually at school because ive got two and my bag doesnt need any added weight . as im packing, a boy, a desk away from mine, walks over and takes my book to the cabinet, some thing he really did not need to do. and i don't know why but i guess im attracted to people being nice, even if it was just a decent human being doing just decent things... the next day, i realise i do want this boy, sadly. i had noticed him before, hes the kind of pretty that doesnt need to exist in a boy but if it does, he unfortunately becomes an object of envy. long lashes, blonde hair, droopy kinda eyes that make him look sleepy all the time. we had just never talked, seeing as we never had reason to. the next day, in a maths lesson, my friend says, "hey don't you think so and so is cute..." as shocked as i was, partly because this friend had been gushing about a different boy an hour ago and partly because it had happened again, i think i played the "really? maybe if i squint really hard he's meh" role really well....long story short, they're dating now....
now youve read my reasoning, there are more...but i just cant remember, i just know you see what i mean. my parents deffo pissed off some magical being and in return it cursed their firstborn daughter.
xoxo
A
ps: this is actually my second time re writing this because i accidentally deleted but the world just needed to know...ty for reading to the end <3

hello im a new fan of touya.. maybe not yet a bnha fan but definitelly touya. i have been avoiding bnha for the longest time and now i feel like i've opened up a treasure chest filled with diamond when i found touya.. i instanly fell in love with him. with tears filled my eyes and sobbing really really hard cause unfortunately i fell in love with him right after watching an edit of him fighting with his family.. watching him dying and in the most vulnerable states. but i guess its better late than never. (right?)
he's so beautiful and yet tragic and i believe there are so much depth in him. but where do i start as a new fan? any recomendations.
also since im collecting plushies can you please tell what kind of plushie touya have out there? i need to get my hands on them. do you also collect his merch and would you mind share it with me?
(sorry if i was rambling i wanna pour my heart out to someone, and you are the only one i know cause im a levi fan as well hehe, have a nice day^^)
Ohhh, hello hello Anon!!
I love talking about my beloved tragic beautiful Dabi... and have been thinking about him so much since the recent episodes. He's so painfully soft behind the hurt and revenge...
Congrats on coming over to the Touya side! Absolutely better late than never and there is still plenty of Touya left to love. The Todorokis have the most interesting plot line in bnha in my opinion. I really love this story in spite of it's end, so I hope you find time to consume it fully. Since you're not a bnha fan yet I assume you haven't consumed the anime or manga content either.. but if I can say, he does not die in battle. And in my opinion, it's clear he lives on even post-war even if I wished to have seen a more concrete happiness for him! 😭
The best way to enjoy your favorite character is always to consume all the content for them lol. There's so many edits and fanart of his beautiful face and you are welcome to go through my blog tag of '#Dabi' if you wish for a place to see a good collection of them 🥺... And of course my personal favorite is reading him in fanfics, where we can truly explore his character.
If I may, might I introduce you to the other half of my love that will always go hand in hand with Touya for me... Takami Keigo/Hawks? 👀 They are basically two sides of the same coin.. constantly in parallel and Hawks is yet another tragic beautiful character. I particularly enjoy his interactions with Dabi in canon, but the fandom world for them together is endless and I could talk forever and absolutely rec some amazing fics if you decide that is also your cup of tea. 🤣
Oh plushie Dabi's yes! I want them all as well but have found them harder to come by than plushie Hawks so I am also still looking for him. (he is also sometimes quite deformed 😭 so it's hard to find good ones!) 🥲 But 'Banpresto' has released a few plushies of him in various sizes from mini keychain types to a medium more firm size and it depends which but some you can find online or others you'll have to import from Japan. I've used 'AitaiKuji' for a good place to browse in the past. There's also a 'Mochibi Dabi' which is more like a tsum tsum shape (relatively easy & affordable to buy). There's also some round ball plushies of him like from Fuwakororin and I've seen some custom fanmade kitty versions of him 🥺 like the one from AgiJagi. Beyond that he has a selection of figures, where his face looks better than others 🤣 so choose wisely (his nendo is super cute tho!). There's also been some collectible very expensive custom ones of him like the one from 'weareanimecollectors'. Anyways, happy merch collecting, I've only had the luxury to start doing more of this in the past few years so I'm no expert! But I can take some pics of the ones I have if you want to see mines. 😉
Always happy to talk more about Dabi! Please feel free to ramble haha. And ohhh hello fellow Levi lover, it's nice to know someone remembers my love for Levi too 🤣 since it's been quite some time since I screamed about him (blame dabihawks lol they took me like the wind) , but he will always be dear. 🥲 💛 Have a lovely day💛

I have a question!! So I’m a long-time BSD enjoyer but I haven’t read nearly as much of the manga as I would like. I’ve seen all of the anime though, most of it multiple times through. I didn’t realize until looking at the comments on Danny Motta’s video at how much people fucking hate Fukuchi and his sword. Up until this point I’ve thought it’s cool as hell and he, along with the sword, bring something kinda new and fun to the series.
HOWEVER, I know BSD is FAR from perfect and there’s a lot of dumb shit that faithful manga readers have a better perspective on. Would you mind explaining why Fukuchi and the sword are such a sore point? I hope this isn’t too much to ask. I just really want to know.
Hi anon! Its not too much to ask at all!
Unfortunately the answer to that is best explained in the context of ALL the issues I have with the manga/show so... this is going to be v long... and im done giving this show more credit than it deserves but don't take it that seriously lol I hesitate to even consider my pov to be on par with the average manga reader but ig we'll see how my opinions hold up after i post
And disclaimer: I don't mind answering this but ONLY with the context that this is 100% my opinion (as of late, bsd as a whole has just been REALLY bugging me so im just gonna take this opportunity to explain my gripes since most of them apply to or tie greatly into fukuchi's character/design/motivations/development)
I simply don't want anyone to come for my head bc of anything I say here tho, bc I feel like I may disagree with a large portion of the fanbase but WITH THAT SAID...
***from this point forward there will be a few spoilers from s5e11***
Here are my gripes with BSD...
1. BSD and its "magic system"?
bsd powers suffer from what i like to call a "lack of scope"
granted this could be due to the fact the story isnt complete HOWEVER im sure any anime fan can tell you this story doesnt feel like it is leading anywhere its just... going... (ill get to the awful pacing later)
for comparison sake im going to also talk about The Case Study of Vanitas since it is the world I have the most experience in
what does BSD not have that VNC does?
simply put, the magic system doesnt reinvent itself character to character
in VNC if you have an ability it is EXCLUSIVELY connected to "manipulations of the world formula" which is essentially elemental control (fire, ice, gravity, etc.) based on a sci fi version of chemistry (alchemy, if you will) and this rule applies to EVERY CHARACTER in VNC
its a structure that starts developing from the beginning
BSD however introduces a WHOLE NEW magic system for each character
some character abilities are similar, yes, and can be classified as such, but many cannot be classified
again a magic system doesnt NEED to have strict rules (its actually more boring that way if the rules are too simple) but it DOES need RULES... and solid ones
otherwise its tempting to use the MAGIC system to fill in PLOT RELATED gaps
and if that system isnt defined, well, to me that looks like lazy/sloppy/illogical writing
if you like the whiplash of not knowing whats gonna happen next, fine, (i did for awhile too!) up until the unpredictability started to come from powers that as a whole look like an authors way of trying to write themselves out of their own plot hole
ie: time travel
specifically time travel that isnt introduced FROM THE BEGINNING...
2. Fukuchi and his "deus ex machina" sword
time travel is NOTORIOUSLY difficult to pull off and especially by my standards
I have watched Doctor Who since 2008, before I even knew what tumblr was I was doing my own solo fandom stuff (basically just watching a LOT of youtube video essays) but basically I have high standards when it comes to time travel in stories
Amenogozen has the POTENTIAL to be a great weapon if used in a logical context... but theres one thing the sword (and BSD as a whole) does not follow
RULES
time travel is TRICKY mostly bc it has consequences... in BSD fukuchi gives nothing in exchange for his powers
lets even toss time travel aside for the moment
what is Fukuchi's innate special ability? Mirror Lion... (read below)
its essentially an attack multiplier of x100 at CLOSE RANGE
lets say your average untrained human punch is 150psi (pounds per square inch) which is the pressure equivalent of a point 100m below the surface of the ocean...
with Mirror Lion's multiplier you get 15,000psi which would be 10,000m or 10 kilometers
a pressure equivalent to the deepest part of the ocean (i dont need to remind you how powerful water is... we all know about oceangate)
MY POINT IS HE'S OVERPOWERED AS FUCK
dont even get me started on his motivations too
im glad we got backstory for him in ep 11 and im sure we are just supposed to sum up his motivations into "he was willing to pay the high price for world peace" but tbh royally fuck that
dont TELL me thats what he believes
PROVE to me how you made that conclusion
also the only reason he even dies is becasue he wants fukuzawa to kill him... we dont have any sense of accomplishment for stopping his scheme because NOW the scheme has been PLOPPED right into fukuzawa's lap which fukuchi intended to do from the start... apparently
and this seemingly retroactive decision-making is a problem A LOT of bsd characters have, especially the one and only character i hate THE MOST... *drumroll*
3. Osamu fucking Dazai
oh boy...
I have thought long and hard about Dazai... im not going to lie, after ch109 and ep10 I was about to admit Dazai might actually have grown on me BUT
this was all erased after 6 minutes into ep11 when he was confirmed to indeed NOT be dead
Dazai just *knows* everything thats gonna happen
Chuuya was never a vamp... he knew this... and somehow his ENTIRE escape plan was just hinging on that? bc yknow... hE kNeW fRoM tHe bEgiNniNg
OSAMU DAZAI IS A PLOT DEVICE USED *ONLY* TO FILL IN NARRATIVE HOLES
HE IS A WAY TO FORCE PROGRESS ON A STORY WITHOUT EVER GIVING A REAL EXPLANATION
HIS CHARACTER IS AN INSULT TO INTELLIGENCE
His character is paper thin, with motivations that do not translate to his actions
and frankly... im tired of it...
additionally... if sigma doesn't survive, all of Meursault was literally useless... so why pick him for nikolai's prison break game?
even if he does, it means the ONLY thing we get out of the arc is information about fyodor... as to WHAT information, who knows... but regardless, a villain arc that has been going on for TOO GODDAMN LONG (40 chapters?) should have a resolution that isnt "i knew what was gonna happen all along"
we spent the whole time being SHOWN that fyodor and dazai were of equal intelligence levels... or at least higher than what dazai was used to dealing with
if dazai could just predict shit like this from the beginning why was fyodor a villain for so long? makes ZERO sense, dazai would've defeated him AGES ago... what makes THIS time any different?
also... why is he even suicidal? yeah ok the author was... but like... why make it such a present character trait?... so we can fake kill him over and over? idk
can you tell i dislike him?
4. THEORY vs PRACTICE
I am a "show dont tell" girlie
ALL BSD DOES IS "TELL TELL TELL" ...its infuriating
almost every power/special ability has an element of "trust me bro" ok SOME OF THEM DONT but most of them do
ie: atsushi is a tiger (what does that even mean), kenji gets strong when he's angry (ok hulk?), and THIS JUST IN we STILL don't know how fyodor's ability works... and now he's DEAD?... we also dont know almost any detail about sigma's ability and he might ALSO be dead
but thats only regarding abilities...
when it comes to writing stories using people of high intelligence it is VERY difficult to not get into the aforementioned "trust me bro" mindset which BSD does REPEATEDLY
im not listing off every example but off the top of my head is one scene from s4...
ranpo explains his plan for saving yosano loosely involved "replacing the engine [of an armored vehicle] with an electric motor and playing engine sounds over the speakers so no one noticed" ...and only i can pick this claim to shreds lol (i engineer electric vehicles for a living) but this is so wrong on so many levels...
Internal combustion engines and Electric motors are IN NO WAY EQUIVALENT
ranpo would never be able to power a vehicle the size of an armored truck with a motor that he installed an hour before the truck was put to use... he just wouldnt... the vehicle is too big... ugh *facepalm*
and dont even get me started on batteries...
MY POINT IS
if you want to write some *genius move* at least TRY to do some research to make the action believable
thats like saying "oh yeah i ran out of gas so a threw a couple AA batteries into my gas tank until i could make it to the station"
BUT THAT WOULDNT FLY BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE KNOW THATS NOT HOW CARS WORK
*sigh*
5. Manga Readers' POV
the.chapters.are.too.short
especially for a monthly released manga
i am relatively new to anime and manga... like late 2020, so I am part of the "new gen" I guess you could say so i know i dont have any right to complain about pacing in comparison to like... the dressrosa arc of One Piece
with that said, not enough in bsd BUILDS on itself
it all feels like a self "one-up"
its been too long since any of my large questions have been answered
honestly its rare that any of my questions are ever answered because the narrative rarely follows logical progression anyway and any scenes thats ARE useful are cut from the anime
characters do not *develop* their powers, they just simply ARE
whatever ability you are born with limits what you can do and thats that... which leads me to...
6. Types of Ability Users
the most coherent thing i think i can speak on so this will be short lol
there are 3 types... i think (excluding lightnovels, i have not read 15, Stormbringer, or any others)
(1) natural abilities (ones that can be nullified by dazai or stolen like in Dead Apple)
(2) human/god fusions (chuuya) -> but this can ALSO be nullified???
(3) when an ability isnt an ability (it CANT be nullified) -> ie: whatever the fuck Lovecraft is
Sigma -> ??? (he could be part of the natural ability category but like... it feels weird to put him there)
but... there is never a comparison between these types so im not even sure of this "list" is exhaustive
this is just another way the story is leaving open ways to dig itself out of a plot hole... which isnt fun... bc now there are no stakes... there are no rules... its disorganized chaos where anything can happen
everyone will always be fine because there is a way out of everything
and thats BORING... and for me, downright infuriating
fukuchi likely falls into the first category... but then again he's also using a tool from another ancient ability user... so does he even fit there?
7. Anime Adaptation
rushed
rushed
RUSHED
and i know why...
BSD is so thin on STABLE plot the story would feel like its dragging if Bones wasn't animating at the pace they are (see Manga Readers' POV)
so to try and counteract the feeling that nothing is happening they are cutting "irrelevant" scenes BUT ALSO important portions relevant ones (ie: aku's death)
do all the plot points from the manga happen? by definition, yes... but the nuance the manga has is lost almost entirely
Atsushi doesn't physically throw an injured Aku's arm over his shoulders... Aku doesn't smile upon his demise... Aku doesn't reach out through the fog of the fire extinguisher (the adaptation of this scene was personally my last straw)
and then we have the new anime content...
why did we tack on an additional fight? zero context... didn't even tie up loose ends from fukuchi like...
is sigma alive?
are chuuya/dazai/nikoali still in france? europe?
is fyodor going to return in some way? (we know nothing of his motives, ability, or MOST importantly, what information did he learn from Sigma??? his ability is an EXCHANGE so why even have that happen if they are both dead anyway?) why would you fucking kill off a character like this
WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THIS ENTIRE ARC??? The mere reason I'm asking this question is, in and of itself, unacceptable
we MAY get an answer later... but its been 20 episodes... why the fuck dont we know anything about the arc we just completed? ...ludicrous
Final Thoughts
BSD does not have enough reliable rules in its magic system to form a solid foundation of... anything
Fukuchi is a disjointed character trying to do too many things at once, he doesn't have solid motivations, and his arc provides more questions than it answers
Osamu Dazai is not a character... he is a plot device used like a saving throw in DND
BSD frequently insults my intelligence to cover it's ass in its storytelling
being a manga reader is like taking 30 days to rip off a tiny band aid... the pacing is unbearable
even with the end of fukuchi's arc now known, there was no sense of accomplishment in defeating him bc technically we didnt… he gave himself up... so the sword was just to make him overpowered... it was pointless
the anime adaptation was rushed, scenes cherry picked, and plot narratively thinned into water... there was no depth this season
In my opinion...
There are very few redeeming characteristics about BSD now
The few meaningful scenes we do get in the manga are overwritten by later context that negates any emotion initially associated with the scene
even with the end of fukuchi's arc now known, there was no sense of accomplishment in defeating him bc technically we didnt... he gave himself up
Dazai is the worst written character I have ever read
It is very likely i drop this story entirely
If I seem salty/upset/etc. its because I am. However is NOT directed at you, it is simply a manifestation of my disappointment in this story.
...
And there you have my opinion... in way too many words... thanks for sticking around if you made it this far im impressed bc i am salty as hell lol
fin
#i hope this helps?#In all seriousness you have likely been following bsd for longer than I have (my first manga chap I had to wait for was ch101#before then i was anime only#so like... early 2022? i think... this sideblog was born soon after)#long post#bsd discourse#asks#opinion#my post#bsd spoilers#god ok this was in my drafts for a bit#and this post likely got significantly out of hand#however i think i just needed a place to write down my thoughts#these arent even all of them by the way#i could write a whole post on dazai alone#...and not good things

Manga I'm reading or will read (so I guess if you have similar tastes check some out):
Death note (im not still reading, I read it long ago, still one of my favorites)
Hikaru no go (LOVE this artist, loved the cdrama adaptation, still need to read the original)
Billy Bat (i love everything naoki urasawa has ever made. If you like mysteries thrillers and wild plots? You'll probably like everything this author made too. In this particular case, billy bat is like if Kingdom Hearts crossed with Beyond Evil and was global scale centuries scale murder world control plot, full of references and a good evil mickey mouse spoof and an evil disney and comic artists as the protagonists and a lot to say about creation and stealing ideas and originality and transforming what already exists and like. If youre both into murder mysteries AND an artist then the themes are very fascinating. Urasawa also seems to make many manga that take place in multiple countries and characters of varied backgrounds, and I appreciate the global scale of the stories and the particular perspectives it offers. Some other manga by urasawa on my to read list: Pluto, Master Keaton, 20th Century Boys, Monster)
Tomie, and anything by Junji Ito (i love junji ito! I read Remina and LOVE IT, highly recommend for horror and sci fi lovers its a short good read. Read his cat manga for some comedy and zero horror. I find his horror manga oddly comforting. I also read Lovesick and adore the way the stories end up much more about personal fears manifested as monsters while the personal fears continue as the true plot, my favorite kind of horror. Junji Ito did a manga adaptation of No Longer Human I may eventually check out, but since the original novel was written by another person im not sure I'll click with it as much)
Dungeon Meshi (to read, self explanatory, its a very kind story in terms of how you feel, nice art and characters)
Golden Kamuy (to read)
Vagabond (to read)
Devilman (reading, feels oddly like old mickey mouse and xmen comics which is pleasant, it is as gay as youve heard)
Berserk (reading, i love it to pieces and take gratuitious breaks because it clicks Too much for me. The character and world designs are very close to how i usually design fantasy worlds, including the gratuitious faerie designs im always doing, so i try not to read this When im writing as its just too close to what i click with lol. I highly recommend if you like fantasy and solid characters)
Tokyo Babylon and X by Clamp (to read)
Banana Fish (to read)
Revolutionary Girl Utena (to read)
Vinland Saga (and the animal version, to read)
Beyond the Tricornered Window (i started, its surprisingly lust filled for a ghost finding story)
One Piece (reading)
Urusei Yatsura (i love everything by rumiko)
Ranma 1/2 (ive read and watched many a time, just my absolute fave. Do you like gender shennanigans, action and romantic comedy? Well i happen to love romantic comedy, IF its bisexual and filled to the brim with action scenes and ridiculous moments. Ranma 1/2 perfectly fits that niche. So lots of fun fights, off the wall moments like a baby pig being actually a teen boy adopted by another boys fiance, a girl who turns into a cat and wants to marry Ranma when he looks like a guy and kill him when he looks like a girl, 2 anime villain level dramatic siblings in a mess with ranma and his fiance akane romantically, a rich preteen girl who kidnaps pig boy, a guy named moose who turns into a goose, its just great)
Trigun (i want to know why people love this manga)
The Drifting Classroom (i just like horror manga a lot can u tell, to read)
School Rumble (another romantic comedy slash ensemble slice of life, where ranma plas with gender and comments on societal biases, school rumble instead keeps it lighter and plays with the usual romance teen manga tropes and both uses and breaks them a lot. The lead is in love with an alien boy who does not get crushes, and is the only alien in the plot. The guy who loves the lead is a delinquent manga artist and that gets meta at points. The leads sister is the more likely usual Protagonist type but shes just into helping animals and avoiding ppl and is very similar to Komisan, one of the leads friends is like Girl James Bond. The characters all read stereotype in early eps then actually get explored in ways you wouldnt expect and wouldnt assume to go that deep. Its very much ensemble about friends, and the romance is not actually main stage despite all the crushes, so a bit like Ouran Host Club in that way. I like romances and slice of life best When they subvert tropes and do the unexpected with them, and school rumble does fun things in that way)
All the Kingdom Hearts manga (i just like kh and love the artist and little side scenes the manga adds that the games dont have. Id love to read the novels one day if i could find them translated)
Innocent (i got an ad that recommended it but it looks scary so im probably in)
Homunculus (looks scary, of course its on the list)
Detective Conan (to read, my friend LOVES the anime)
Arcana (genuinely no idea what its about, i just gave it one look and made a judgemeny guess itd be my kind of story. Ill find out)
Brutal (looks scary, so of course i added it to my to read)
Erased (my friend loved the anime so ill probably like it)
Inuyasha (i figured maybe i should finish the manga since ive Watched half the anime back in childhood)
Seven Days (theres a jdrama bl adaptation)
Takara Kun and Amagi Kun (theres a jdrama bl adaptation)
Ultras (ill be real it looks super gay but also romance heavy only and i dont care much for Only romance usually, if u like gay sports stuff this looks like REAL gay sports romance drama for adults)
Witch Hat Atelier

alice in borderland ending is so ass booty garbage, a rant by me.
okay yeah, i get what the borderland is. its purgatory. all of their hearts stopped and they were between life and death. they're all literally fighting for their lives. if they die in the games they die in real life. but tbh ANY of the scenarios Mira describes would feel like a more fitting ending.
it doesn't make sense that the only thing that really mattered for their survival was their own "desire to live"? i get it from a storytelling perspective in that, well we need the main characters to be alive. but then that makes every death that happened in the games completely pointless. the sacrifices that Chota and Karube made mean absolutely nothing. very few of the people who died WANTED to die? i think of the girl from s1e1 in the very first game, who ran through the wrong door and was lazered. she ran through the door because she wanted to survive - so why did she get shot in the head? how is that not contradictory? the games clearly do not care about the contestants' will to live so i don't get how that can be the reason that the "winners" survive.
what happens to the people who accept residency in the borderlands? do they die for real or do they get to stay there? it would have made more sense for the face cards to be permanent residents. and that would have explained why the games are so inhuman, because the game masters are legit distanced from humanity. or for the permanent residents to be the unexplained people who were watching the games on monitors and betting on the contestants.
so who are any of those people then? does it ever explain? why the hell were cardholders were chosen to be cardholders? if the games were testing everyone, then why were they not all being tested in the same way? like bruh the tests have to be the same in order to be neutral. everyone getting different tests only shows their reaction to a specific situation.
i also don't get why they're being punished in the borderlands. like that's just some nihilistic shit right there! everyone regardless of how they behaved during their lifetime is forced through actual torture. that's Hell! and while i may be approaching the idea of purgatory with a western Christian view, it doesn't make sense that they're being punished just for existing. this system only rewards you if you're very selfish or a sinless little angel.
i saw that in the manga, the driving force behind everything happening is an entity called the Joker, which explains the TV show ending on that card. but the way that the episode ended definitely implied that he was the next thing that was gonna come terrorize them, and not what they'd already faced. everything about s2e8 read like an ending except for that.
is the reason behind all the horror because the Joker made it that way? does he influence the choices that people make? are the people who come to the borderlands the ones responsible for their own misery, and he is just a neutral observer? i guess im just confused by the choice to leave the Joker out (though from what i can tell, the manga doesn't elaborate very much).
can somebody who has read the manga let me know if overall that version makes any more sense? or are there just as many plot holes/unanswered questions? i was really into the series up until the very last episode.
i understand that there's supposed to be an element of "life isn't fair" when it comes to this show. but like??? it's too much! it's too pessimistic, too unfair. it takes away the idea that kindness and love MATTER, that they make a difference. i hate that good people were at a disadvantage in this universe. the only times where things went well for anyone was when people decided to trust each other and work together (good example: Usagi rallying everyone against the Queen of Spades).
my issue is NOT that the borderlands turned out to be the afterlife. it's that it's a very stupid and pessimist take on the afterlife that showcases the darkness in humanity. it's significant that loving and being loved is what got Arisu through until the end. love doesn't exist in the borderlands. but that's fucked up!
the idea is very interesting in concept but was poorly executed in the end. i also don't really get why EVERYONE could go home if it was only Arisu who played and won the final game? that doesn't make sense. i might have missed something there.
tldr; maybe The Good Place has ruined every other show about the afterlife for me. or maybe the Alice in Borderland ending just... sucks?

i'm so hooked on one piece i'm reading it while at home, not just at my desk at work. its so fucking over
ONE PIECE CHAPTER 49
just an adorable splash art featuring nami and a big fat bird. i'm into it.
and we're back to gin trauma dumping! and setting us up for another character who is gonna be one hell of a guy!
oh shit!
same
zoro comments he's searching for that guy. some of the kitchen staff comment he showed up once and got piss drunk. the girlies are enjoying their gossip while luffy waits to get his ass kicked i guess!
you have to understand, gin, this manga is just silly enough that that's plausible!
zeff goes on to explain its just an example, because the grand line is fucking cuh-razy apparently!
i'll be honest, i screencapped this just for usopp's face.
zoro enthuses his goals, too, are tied to the grand line as well.
sanji points out the obvious.
y'all dumb!
i may have not earned the right to say it but zoro, honey, you are stupid
so then patty interrupts to call everyone the r slur (i'm gonna assume this is yet another questionable translation choice...probably) and remind them of the situation at hand
OK YEAH FAIR
so back on don krieg's ship, the crew eats themselves full and cheers
i grabbed this specific panel because look at that dude's shirt
so next don krieg is like "so we're going back to the grand line" and the crew is stunned, one guy expresses his hesitance out loud, so he's shot and killed. understandable
(be nice and ignore my discord notif im lazy)
but then, right when theyre about to head back into the baratie, something slices their fucking ship in half
it isn't!
i should mention, between reading this chapter and the last i checked, nami was in fact established to be waiting back on the ship, i just didn't notice it.
not possible, nami has plot armor
she put on her plot armor and sailed away!!!
so nami is put on a bus, or a boat rather, and zeff has a moment to lead us into the next chapter... the big five oh!
and off we go to that chapter!
final thoughts:
i'm sorry for referencing tvtropes. it wasn't even really proper use of the trope, because nami will probably be back really soon
2.
i need this guy to be a full character

•Alice in borderland (honestly its pretty interesting, theres also a netflix live action adaptation you could watch)
•Bungou stray dogs anime (my sleep deprived self is just dying in laughter cause of this one lol)
Top 3 4 Manga/Anime of mine that I'd recommend-
Demon Slayer / Kimetsu no Yaiba: 10 out of 10! Its a really good story and has amazing character designs and plot. Perfect if you love action and comedy.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Id give this one a 9 out of 10 recommendation. The manga isn't currently finished so my rating may change, but they kill off too many characters..... either way the plot is pretty good and the characters are amazing!
Tokyo Revengers: This one isn't for everyone but honestly its a 10 out of 10 for me. Love the plot a lot, but they do curse a LOT.. and its quite gruesome at times. But the characters are really wholesome and its such a good story, plus there is always something new and exciting around the corner lol.
bonus #4: Bungou stray dogs! It's so beautiful and it's really good. I love how funny it is at points as well :3

hiii okay! i have, in fact, been following the manga and read it all the way until the end. im able to follow the convo, but honestly i havent took the time to process fully what its all about. might be missing some stuff. (ill leave a tl;dr at the bottom if anyone wants to mentally check out real quick at any point)
that said! yeah i think when we put together all the biggest driving plot points of jjk's motivation factor as a Jump manga its about breaking the cycle of suffering. dying a good death by living a good life, stopping more suffering, being affected by existing bullshit and then deciding to perpetuate it or not -- all these are in the work itself.
for the sake of not over inflating stuff i think ill start yapping about the more Shinto side of things relevant to jjk's themes. (buddhism is there but not relevant. too long)
Shinto is the native religion of Japan. again, its whole thing is about appeasing the spirits and nature through rituals. while this religion seems almost shamanistic, its so important that the royal family of japan claims to be a descendant from one of the Big Shinto Gods. the first Emperor of japan according to lore. this was Emperor Jinmu, a child of Amateratsu the goddess of the sun, who then descended from Izanagi, who himself and his twin and wife Izanami was popped into existence from a void soup.
Shinto was so important that Shinto Priests were paid to do rituals in governance. what some in anglo speaking sphere will call witchcraft they call practicality.
so, this means in jjk, the Jujutsu Society in times of old may as well have been these Shinto Priests and Priestress. Shrine Maidens/Miko. with their ritual song and dance. like Utahime, whose name can be directly translated into Princess Of Songs.
now again since Gege uses everything BUT apply the word of Kegare to build his world, i think he wants to avoid a 1:1 of Curse Users = Shinto bc simply, that road is paved in Rigid Hierarchical Rightism Hell.
let me try to explain.
(take a break if you have to im going into the reeds @_@)
in order to solidify the rule of the Emperor, shintoism was overwhelmingly used as a rhetoric to get people to submit to the Emperor, and build the understanding of society and world as a whole. jp language has a hierarchical quirk built into it not by total accident. Caste System was used alongside all of these too, even if the clear order may have shifted throughout history.
even if at one point, the Shogunate actually overthrew the Emperor and effectively became king. this was 1185-1868. during which the Emperor was basically a well kept pet in the background. and also, the Caste System went from some social mobility to almost none at all. and oh so many wars oh my godddddd
this was also when lots of people who did society's death related jobs fell through the caste so hard society wants to treat them like they dont even exist. (burakumins)
all of these are to say that there is a rigid social order. and when there is one so rigid, abuse naturally follows. and when you go way overboard.... and when the outside world comes knocking... and when civil war keeps happening... well...
we get the hyper imperialistic, racist, fascist japan of ww2. complicit in damn near genocide with conquering and forcing the oppressed to speak JP and change their names to JP. (tho this has been happening natively in japan itself with tribes of yore. the Ainus are one such group.)
"expel the barbarians (foreigners), revel the emperor". its a rabbit hole and... i need to move on.
so all of these to say that certain aspects of Shinto can be really dangerous to put into a work. there exists a certain amount of aversion to loudly declare and portray shintoism in full because of all that ww2 baggage. at best.
at worst, it can become a neo-imperialistic dog whistle. and we dont need that. jjk doesnt need that.
back to jjk
so all of the above is to say that, yeah, jjk is very much about trying to break the cycle. with the context of knowing how long 1 potential cycle has been, with sukuna's existence as an indicator being 1000 years, and you can see all of the above are quite relevant in tone.
that 1000 years coincides with the whole shogunate thing too.
gojo, a millennial possibly, wanting to break this hierarchical traditionalist structure that perpetuates more victims is very understandable. but in the ending of jjk, he doesnt seem like he manages to fully accomplish his goal of breaking the cycle, only improve it by wrenching open a path for the next gen to tread.
in fact, gojo cant even defeat the reality of a 1000 year history on his own. he needs help from the next gen and even guys from overseas to help take him down. (thereby saying fuck racism in shinto context)
and in the ending, this 1000 year walking history says "you know what, maybe i was wrong. maybe i should do something different".
and its why in the ending yuji has this scene
TL;DR
so what im putting forth here is this.
jjk is very much a call to look at japan's past in the eye and choose a different path. to break the cycle of suffering as an individual even if they must live under some nonsensical system. that the new must take over the old and having the old latch on too long isnt a good thing in the long run (kinda a buddhist thing lowkey)
anyway
id like to hear about geto if you feel up for it...! geto and gojo are such fascinating characters even if my favorite is yuji sadfads
This post by @imustbenuts got me thinking about death and its relation to bad energy that attracts misfortune and evil spirits, and how that seems to also show up in Jujutsu Kaisen.
This is present from the very beginning of the story, as Yuuji's introduction to Jujutsu Society is enmired in death. Of course, there's the bit where he consumes Sukuna's mummified finger, but bookending that on either side, we have Yuuji's grandfather's death. His grandfather kicks the bucket before everything with the finger goes down, and it's right after that when he meets Megumi. That's really where his path starts. If he hadn't met Megumi, he would have never found out about the finger, or about the danger the other members of the Occult Club were in. They likely would have all been killed by the cursed spirit, and while Yuuji would have been drowning in grief, he'd likely be none the wiser about all the crazy spirit stuff going on.
But instead, Yuuji meets Megumi before he's even left the hospital.
And because of his grandfather's final words to him, Yuji feels compelled to try and help, even after Megumi warns him how dangerous it might be.
His inevitable flow from that point to swallowing the finger (and surviving) is enough to get him the attention of Jujutsu Society, but that's really just the first step. They don't accept him, and it's only the intervention of Gojo that gets him a postponement on his execution.
But even after intervening, Gojo puts Yuuji to the test. He doesn't do it at the school or on some sort of neutral grounds. He doesn't wait for Yuuji to enroll and then see how he does on his first mission the way he does with Yuuta. Instead, Gojo accompanies Yuuji as Yuuji goes to take care of his grandfather's cremated remains. He answers Yuuji's questions and gives him a very straightforward picture of the sheer amount of death Yuuji's going to be dealing with.
In the manga, the whole conversation and Yuuji's acceptance of this path takes place outside the crematorium. In the anime, they take it one step further, and have Yuuji decide to consume the second finger and officially begin his path into Jujutsu Society as a punctuation to Yuuji performing the final care for his grandfather's remains. We literally get to see him picking his grandfather's bones out of the ash and carefully placing them into an urn.
When that urn is finally closed, he asks Gojo about the finger, then consumes it, accepting a path full of bad energy and misfortune as his own.
But the idea of Jujutsu Society being associated with bad energy isn't simply used as imagery around the beginning of Yuuji's journey. It comes up multiple times in the story, and it's not exactly subtle. Jujutsu sorcery is performed by channeling negative energy and using it to combat, restrain, and/or destroy the spirits that have arisen due to a concentration of it. I'm curious now if the words used for cursed energy in the Japanese correlate with the Shinto concept of kegare. After all, it would hardly be the only Shinto concept referenced in the series.

Spoilers for Spy x Family Manga volume 4 - chapter???? I dont have it on me im on my 5 min break at work on mobile. Also I've only read up to vol 4 so forgive me if I'm missing some key info
But!!! A little idea on how Loid finds out (a little plot bunny really)
So, we know that the agency knows about Project Apple - at least, the very basics. They know they were throwing a bunch of things at the wall to see what sticks, they know that these dogs were part of an experiment, they just don't have specifics ((or at least I haven't read far enough...)). We also know that while they may be trying to figure out what these dogs are capable of, they also allow them to be treated well- one was adopted by the Forgers (because Anya is a Master Manipulator), one was adopted by Sylvia, and im assuming the rest were adopted by various other agents.
Okay!! So now the point of this - operation strix is a success, everything went well (I don't think the goal is to kill Donovan but more on that another day) and now Twilight is waiting for the agency to off Loid in someway so the family thinks he's dead and Twilight will be unemcunbered. A car accident? A random attack? A patient? He doesn't know, but he's waiting. And he knows he loves them!! He knows he's going to miss Anya's joy and Yor's smile and every mishap in between and so bro is really fucking angsty about it.
At the same time - between all the little bits that don't add up from Loid (his 'job', actions, maybe she finds something in his bedroom???) and Yuri - Yor is getting very sus about Loid. She is starting to add things up, and is realizing that the math just isn't matching. And Loid!! Has no idea!! Because Wise has nothing on her, so obviously why would he be worried? Why would he question his very beautiful, sweet, ridiculously strong (that he definitely doesn't have a crush in. No sir)
And of course, poor Anya is over here suffering. Her dad's getting ready to leave, her mom is getting sus, and she is getting the overall impression that no matter what she does, nothing will make their family stay. Nothing changes, no matter how well she listens, studies, cuddling, nothing fixes it. And how can you be comforted by the family that's going to be taken away from you? That's going to leave you?? Basically every one is Suffering (tm) and is miserable, but pretending they're not.
Then Anya is kidnapped. Her little balcony door ever so slightly cracked, bedroom door locked, Bond barking at the door. Loid and Yor losing their absolute minds, pulling in everyone they know. Franky, Yuri, Sylvia, anyone.
This part I'm fuzzy on, but this is where Twilight and Thorn Princess speil would happen. Twilight - to locate Anya and break in. Thorn Princess to murder the fuck out of anyone in between them and their daughter. Anya is saved, with only a little more trauma.
And now Wise knows. Knows she's a telepath. Loid and Yor know that she knew their secrets the whole time. Wise can't exactly like lock her up, not with her being friends with both Damian and Becky, a student at Eden there'd be too many questions.
Now, Loid has a more ... permanent assignment. Raising and watching over another of the lost experiments. After all Berlint will always have needs of a spy, with the cold war and all. Yor loves her family, whether or not it started as fake and is dragging Yuri into it by force. Happy endings all around.
Let me know what you think!!! Sorry for the wall of text/ any misspellings. Again I'm on mobile, it's dicey at best!
