The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix
(Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen)
White (good) necromancy as a concept is incredibly difficult to do well and these books imo pull it off. It's also dark fantasy which was perfect for teen me.
There are two more books in the series, Clariel and Goldenhand, but the former is shit highschool drama for most of it (though it does serve as a good prequel to events in Lirael in the end) and it was so disappointing it put me off reading the latter. Series was originally a trilogy anyway.
It also held up when I reread it as an adult.
not allowed to say Harry Potter, but what was your book series obsession as a teen
mine was definitely Eragon

I love the little AU that skinny people live in where they have the same problems as fat people and can relate to the Experience. artists references are only for fat bodies, artists that do draw thin bodies are getting DMs from people going like "omg I'm so happy I discovered your art, it's so rare to find an artist who draws small bodies!!!!! for the first time I see people who look like me 😭😭" skinny people going "omggg I finally found a clothing brand that sells nice dresses in XS, I wish they weren't so so overpriced though" skinny people getting home from the doctor's office and collapsing on the couch to tell their roommate that their doc spent the whole appointment quizzing them about their diet and they were told they need to gain 40 pounds. but the doctor didn't want to check out the weird scraping sound they make when they breathe in, just that they should probably gain weight first. skinny celebrities and influencers spending thousands of dollars getting plastic surgery to transfer fat to their stomachs and jawlines. all the main characters in tv shows are fat. when you watch cartoons as a kid, there's one skinny character, and they're really dumb and annoying and get laughed at by the other characters. they're a loser and never get a boyfriend/girlfriend. the same clothes that are stylish when worn by fat people just get you made fun of. desirable romantic leads and manic pixie dream girls twirl their hair and say "yeeah I've just been fat my whole life, I just never lose weight no matter what I eat hehe" and this is an extremely endearing and attractive trait.

OK Brennan, if you aren't gonna let me have Aelwyn posted up in the manor at all times, having her use her dramatic villain skills to protect Adaine before going off to teach middle schoolers is the next best thing I could have hoped for. What a mental image--Ms. "I Came Here To Fuck" teaching cantrips to eleven-year-olds. Wild.

Nobody wants to guard the civilian sea-gate.
It’s not that it’s a difficult job- hell, it’s barely a job at all. Nobody wants to swim in the water, it’s bad luck- so nobody ever comes to the gate. It’s a grueling 48 hours spent standing watch, watching nothing, bored out of your skull.
But still, two knights must stand at the ready just in case some poor idiot shows up- lost and confused, and always panicky to find themselves so close to the shore.
You make friends fast though, you and the other knight you’re stationed with. Often folks will bring cards, dice, or some other manner of distraction- or you’ll get talking, gossiping, it’s almost fun.
And yet, nobody wants to guard the civilian sea-gate. Nobody ever wants to be that close to the water.

Man, it's cool and all if you see a metaphor for marginalisation in the monstrous, and if you want the power fantasy of 'what if you could just eat anybody who threatened you/pissed you off'. Me too.
However, as soon as you start saying 'no, these monsters are a 1:1 on Specific Marginalised Group, and you have to treat them in the fiction like they are directly representative of real human members of the marginalised group', BUT you also, in the fiction, make them hurt/kill/eat humans? And then try to shame me, your audience, for noticing or engaging with the bit where they kill people, because you made them directly representative of a real-world marginalised group? You have lost me, and also, I think, the plot.
#hear yourself. for the love of whatever you cherish.#'but they only kill bigots so ACTUALLY they're the GOOD GUYS -' your metaphor of monstrosity is entirely premised on the question of#'what if what you went around righteously killing; believing your actions to be justified;#were actually people and it was not in fact righteous or justified to just kill them'#'what if the world isn't neatly split into 'good guys' and 'bad guys'#who gets to decide who or what is 'bad'? because that's the original problem of monstrosity-as-metaphor-for-marginalisation#(if as a creator you say 'oh my intention with this was X' cool!#if instead you go with something like. well.#'well in this setting monsters are so rare it doesn't matter that they kill people and you'd have to be a homicidal sadistic psychopath >#< to hunt them; but sure I guess if you want to play a Bad Person' well I might have#but if you're going to explicitly judge me for wanting to engage with the moral question of 'how justified is this and who would do it#versus how justified are these monsters if they do have to harm or kill people to continue to exist'#then maybe I just don't want to play your game at all)#anyway I'm sick to death of poor uwu cozy vampires who are SO marginalised so I'm not Allowed to care about all the people they murder#it being fucked up is what's fun about it! do all the other shit but let me take the murders seriously!#and inb4 someone accuses me of being a bigot for saying 'actually I don't think you get a free pass to kill and eat people if you're gay'#remember when the CW's famously reactionary and conservative Supernatural tried to just gloss over the part where every time its heroes >#< killed a demon with a magic knife it also killed the person the demon was possessing#and say 'oh no it's fine we don't care about those killings; they don't matter; don't bother caring about them either'#but they were doing it to glorify exactly the kind of people that these 'monster as metaphor' stories are trying to cast as expendable?#I have other examples that are like. real dramas. but That Paranormal Show is the one that's in the same niche that I'm talking about here#it feels more insidious when it comes through a fantasy show where there are monsters involved#so you can say 'no it's not real so it doesn't matter'#but then ALL of it is equally not real. and vampires are not actually an oppressed group. because they don't exist.#you can say 'these vampires are a metaphor for an oppressed group so this fiction matters in real life'#or you can say 'don't care about the murders because they weren't actually real'#but you can't say both and then get mad at ME for treating the murders as seriously as the vampires#let me engage with your premise and don't waste my fucking time#or just set your fluff in the Sesame Street universe where vampires drink cherry Kool-Aid and help kids learn to count

Here's some worldbuilding advice, mainly aimed at fantasy writers, but scifi also applies:
Do your characters (or a beloved companion animal/transportation creature) have wings and fly a lot?
Cool!
Are your winged characters who fly a lot ambush predators who rely on stealth to take down prey? Like owls?
No?
Then here's a fun world-building thing to think about:
How loud are their flapping wings, and how do your characters communicate with each other when they're flying if it is too loud to speak normally, (assuming your characters are not telepathic?)
Do your characters have a unique form of sign language they use while flying in line of sight of each other? How do they draw each others attention to sign to them?
Do they use a series of whistles and chirps made with the mouth to communicate?
Do they have bells, or drums, or some other percussion-based system of communication?
if you answered 'yes' to any of the above three options, you can break it down even more:
Is this flight-language something everyone is taught/knows, or do only specialized groups use it?
Are there different flight-languages or dialects between different communities/settlements? How about age groups?
Is it something that is used commonly during non-flight situations as a way to casually abbreviate speech? Or is that seen as taboo, rude, unlucky, 'low-brow', or sacrilegious?
In what situations could your characters use this form of communication to their advantage?
anyways here's a little BBC documentary clip demonstrating the sound + size difference in owl wings in flight vs other birds :D
It's a fun watch even if you're not writing about winged characters, just some fun, neat science!

The Junior Year Intro: Fuck yeah, teenagers rule, this is gonna be our year baby!
Junior Year’s content: I am struggling so hard, I don’t know how to handle anything going on right now, I’m maybe broken up with my first ever girlfriend, my family has abandoned me, I’m failing everything and even if I’m doing well I don’t have the money to pursue higher education with my friends, I think something intensely sinister is going on that I don’t understand, Im dealing with undiagnosed mental illnesses aplenty, and to top it all off, my Van is busted.

holding garak responsible for his behaviour on empok nor is kinda ridiculous for a number of reasons, one of which is obviously the fantastical nature of specifically what happened there in the first place, but. i gotta say.
if someone was slowly induced into a state of psychosis, dosed with utterly absurd amounts of basically amphetamines against their will, and then placed into a situation that involved them being encouraged to murder at least two people in the name of self defense, if they went ahead and flipped out and tried to kill everyone else present at the time, well—
i think i would forgive a real world human for that too, honestly. i do not think that would be their fault. i would think that situation was fucked up and they (and everyone else) were gonna need therapy forever and ever but that was not their fuckin’ fault.
