thoughts about the Cardassian writing system
I've thinking about the Cardassian script as shown on screen and in beta canon and such and like. Is it just me or would it be very difficult to write by hand?? Like.
I traced some of this image for a recent drawing I did and like. The varying line thicknesses?? The little rectangular holes?? It's not at all intuitive to write by hand. Even if you imagine, like, a different writing implement—I suppose a chisel-tip pen would work better—it still seems like it wasn't meant to be handwritten. Which has a few possible explanations.
Like, maybe it's just a fancy font for computers, and handwritten text looks a little different. Times New Roman isn't very easily written by hand either, right? Maybe the line thickness differences are just decorative, and it's totally possible to convey the same orthographic information with the two line thicknesses of a chisel-tip pen, or with no variation in line thickness at all.
A more interesting explanation, though, and the one I thought of first, is that this writing system was never designed to be handwritten. This is a writing system developed in Cardassia's digital age. Maybe the original Cardassian script didn’t digitize well, so they invented a new one specifically for digital use? Like, when they invented coding, they realized that their writing system didn’t work very well for that purpose. I know next to nothing about coding, but I cannot imagine doing it using Chinese characters. So maybe they came up with a new writing system that worked well for that purpose, and when computer use became widespread, they stuck with it.
Or maybe the script was invented for political reasons! Maybe Cardassia was already fairly technologically advanced when the Cardassian Union was formed, and, to reinforce a cohesive national identity, they developed a new standardized national writing system. Like, y'know, the First Emperor of Qin standardizing hanzi when he unified China, or that Korean king inventing hangul. Except that at this point in Cardassian history, all official records were digital and typing was a lot more common than handwriting, so the new script was designed to be typed and not written. Of course, this reform would be slower to reach the more rural parts of Cardassia, and even in a technologically advanced society, there are people who don't have access to that technology. But I imagine the government would be big on infrastructure and education, and would make sure all good Cardassian citizens become literate. And old regional scripts would stop being taught in schools and be phased out of digital use and all the kids would grow up learning the digital script.
Which is good for the totalitarian government! Imagine you can only write digitally. On computers. That the government can monitor. If you, like, write a physical letter and send it to someone, then it's possible for the contents to stay totally private. But if you send an email, it can be very easily intercepted. Especially if the government is controlling which computers can be manufactured and sold, and what software is in widespread use, etc.
AND. Historical documents are now only readable for scholars. Remember that Korean king that invented hangul? Before him, Korea used to use Chinese characters too. And don't get me wrong, hangul is a genius writing system! It fits the Korean language so much better than Chinese characters did! It increased literacy at incredible rates! But by switching writing systems, they broke that historical link. The average literate Chinese person can read texts that are thousands of years old. The average literate Korean person can't. They'd have to specifically study that field, learn a whole new writing system. So with the new generation of Cardassian youths unable to read historical texts, it's much easier for the government to revise history. The primary source documents are in a script that most people can't read. You just trust the translation they teach you in school. In ASIT it's literally a crucial plot point that the Cardassian government revised history! Wouldn't it make it soooo much easier for them if only very few people can actually read the historical accounts of what happened.
I guess I am thinking of this like Chinese characters. Like, all the different Chinese "dialects" being written with hanzi, even though otherwise they could barely be considered the same language. And even non-Sinitic languages that historically adopted hanzi, like Japanese and Korean and Vietnamese. Which worked because hanzi is a logography—it encodes meaning, not sound, so the same word in different languages can be written the same. It didn’t work well! Nowadays, Japanese has made significant modifications and Korean has invented a new writing system entirely and Vietnamese has adapted a different foreign writing system, because while hanzi could write their languages, it didn’t do a very good job at it. But the Cardassian government probably cares more about assimilation and national unity than making things easier for speakers of minority languages. So, Cardassia used to have different cultures with different languages, like the Hebitians, and maybe instead of the Union forcing everyone to start speaking the same language, they just made everyone use the same writing system. Though that does seem less likely than them enforcing a standard language like the Federation does. Maybe they enforce a standard language, and invent the new writing system to increase literacy for people who are newly learning it.
And I can imagine it being a kind of purely digital language for some people? Like if you’re living on a colonized planet lightyears away from Cardassia Prime and you never have to speak Cardassian, but your computer’s interface is in Cardassian and if you go online then everyone there uses Cardassian. Like people irl who participate in the anglophone internet but don’t really use English in person because they don’t live in an anglophone country. Except if English were a logographic writing system that you could use to write your own language. And you can’t handwrite it, if for whatever reason you wanted to. Almost a similar idea to a liturgical language? Like, it’s only used in specific contexts and not really in daily life. In daily life you’d still speak your own language, and maybe even handwrite it when needed. I think old writing systems would survive even closer to the imperial core (does it make sense to call it that?), though the government would discourage it. I imagine there’d be a revival movement after the Fire, not only because of the cultural shift away from the old totalitarian Cardassia, but because people realize the importance of having a written communication system that doesn’t rely on everyone having a padd and electricity and wifi.
#if I read over this again I will inevitably want to change and add things so I'm refraining from doing that. enjoy whatever this is#forgive my very crude recounting of chinese and korean history! I am neither a historian nor a linguist#but I will NOT apologize for talking abt china so much. that's my culture and I'm weird abt it bc of my family history#and it's my GOD GIVEN RIGHT to project what little I know abt it onto all my worldbuilding#also I've never actually read abt any of the various cardassian conlangs but I'm curious if this contradicts or coincides with any of them#I still want to make my own someday. starting college as a linguistics major (in 2 weeks!!) so presumably I will learn how to do that#narcissus's echoes#ds9#asit#star trek#cardassians#cardassian meta#a stitch in time#hebitians#lingposting

Everything I learn about Rose Wilder Lane makes me more and more aware that she was a hilariously outrageous person who needs a movie made about her immediately.
After leaving Missouri, she moves to California and marries a real-estate guy who once tried to get her to help him con the railroad.
She gets hired at a San Francisco newspaper known for its yellow journalism, where she does things like writing a series of columns featuring the "real-life stories of a police detective" who, in real life, was a high-end jewel thief.
Her first book is a first-person "autobiography" of Charlie Chaplin that she (after a few interviews with Chaplin) completely made up, and that Charlie Chaplin immediately threatened to sue her publisher for.
Her second book is a biography of Jack London, which his wife only reluctantly allowed her to write because Rose presented herself as "someone who had never written for the newspapers before and needs a chance to break into the magazines." This book was also almost entirely fictional, and her publisher also almost got sued over it.
Third biography is the first-ever biography of Herbert Hoover, also a heavily-fictionalized account. (Doesn't seem to have been sued for this one. Steps in the right direction!)
Traveled as a reporter through Europe (to places like Albania and Poland) post-WWI. (If we want to talk about legal things that she did).
Wrote a book based on Laura's late-childhood pioneer experiences while Laura was writing the early books of the Little House series, and did not tell Laura about it. (Laura was ticked off).
Kept trying to insert a story into Laura's memoirs (and Little House on the Prairie) casting Pa as a member of a posse that hunted down the infamous (and never-caught) serial-killing Bender family (despite the fact that this was historically impossible). (It got to the point that Laura herself told this story to the public as an example of "a true story I couldn't out in my children's book." Despite the fact, I say again, that this was historically impossible).
During WWII, endured a minor incident (it involved one cop coming to her house) where the FBI investigated her as a potential communist based on a postcard she sent that was critical of the government. Turned this into a short story that presented herself as the righteously-outraged American citizen fighting against an oppressive government, and used this to whip up a nationwide media campaign against J. Edgar Hoover for spying on American citizens.
Flew to Vietnam as a war reporter when she was in her seventies.
#history is awesome#rose wilder lane#little house#i finally finished pioneer girl perspectives#to think i didn't even want to read the essay about the bender family#i skipped over it and left it til last#cuz i thought it would just rehash the fact vs fiction stuff i've seen covered elsewhere#turns out it was about the history of yellow journalism and provided most of the facts i've listed#(i was today years old when i learned that 'yellow journalism' was short for 'yellow kid journalism')#(and it came from a popular 'yellow kid' cartoon character that hearst and pulitzer both fought over to get into their papers)#also it turns out the bender family was a popular yellow journalism topic (because they'd never been found so people could make stuff up)#usually the stories centered around posses that found and killed them#but my favorite is the story that they made a hot air balloon from a natural gas deposit in a swamp in kansas#and escaped over the gulf of mexico#until their balloon popped and they landed on a passing ship where one of them could make a deathbed confession#history is awesome but the history of fake history is its own special kind of awesome

the coolest kids in forgotten valley!!☆
(…it seems there may have been a stretch of time where rock and lumina were the only kids in forgotten valley…🥲)
poseref
#in the remake hugh and the player’s kid are the same number of years apart#so i can see them having very similar conversations n friendship#surely these two kids will grow up well adjusted and they will have no lasting effects from this kind of isolation. they will be fine#i have been thinking a lot about what their childhoods were like. i want to protect both of them#everyone who has anything to say about them as kids says that both of them were not well behaved children at all#tei says rock was rambunctious and energetic and hard to handle. sebastian says lumina was less than amenable#rock says he was bored to death when he first came here and lumina asks you not to tell romana that she’s lonely#lumina also hated wearing dresses so. she is very mad and ready to bite people maybe#sos awl#bokumono#my art#rock tumbling (sos)#harvest moon#story of seasons#story of seasons a wonderful life#bokujou monogatari#i like to imagine a au where pony and cecilia come to visit their family’s respective farms#so these two can have more friends ;w;#i am always thinking about how they were both severed from their families and taken in by someone else at a young age to live in nowhere#and they are both not exactly enthused about following the path laid out for them#headcanon ⚠️ i wonder if rock’s moving out on his own happened when he was a teenager. he was extremely confident everything would work out#anyway he got fired from every job ever and after many years came crawling back. and he came crawling back blond#at the time of chapter 1 lumina is baffled by the state of the guy she grew up with. why is he using dated slang and wearing disco costume#she is also kind of mad at him for having been gone for so long#hc rock probably had more freedom as a kid than lumina did which probably annoyed her#once again takakura retrieves a small rock from the goddess pond and he’s covered in poison ivy bee stings etc. no remorse#lumina from her window on the hill feels somehow jealous of these misadventures#lumina mentions in her heart event that she doesn’t often visit the beach because her skin burns easily#meanwhile rock was probably playing outside always. if his kid is any indication#idk i like thinking about the history of this extremely small village

Imagine, if you will, that you are a single father to a disabled child
You love this child more than your own goddamn life, you want to be a good father to him, and you try so hard every step of the way to do that
You make mistakes. You know you make mistakes. But everyone makes mistakes, and you're doing your best for your kid.
And every step of the way, your parents are telling you that you aren't good enough, that your kid is better off without you and should be with them instead
You go from your hometown in Texas to Los-fucking-Angeles to get your son out of their reach, because your parents are overbearing and have a tendency to infantilize your son, and sure, you love your parents, but you're pretty sure they aren't good for your kid long term
After a near-death experience, you go so far as to change your will to ensure that even in the event of your death, your parents will not be able to get to your kid, that's how strongly you feel about this. At the end of the day, you think that the best place for your son isn't with your parents
Now say you fuck up again. It's a major fuck up, I'll give you that, but you fuck it up and you're giving your kid space to be furious at you because you know you deserve it. And then your parents show up at your house, unannounced, because your kid called them behind your back and they're going to take him back to Texas with them
They didn't even have the courtesy to call you and be like, "Hey, I just got a strange call from Christopher??? What's up with that?" They didn't warn you at all, just boom, we're here and we're taking the kid
These assholes really got that phone call and went, "Now's our chance."
WHY THE FUCK would you let your kid go with them? You KNOW that your parents aren't good for him, you KNOW your parents have tried to pressure you into giving up custody, why would you let your son go with them?????
Go stay with ANYONE ELSE if you want away from me, go to fucking summer camp again, but you are not going with the people that I'm half-afraid are gonna kidnap you and not give you back and especially not when they live 800+ miles away. Absolutely not.
Listen, Eddie. I love you, man, you know I do, and I KNOW you're going through it right now, but this is genuinely the dumbest decision you've ever made.
GET YOUR CHILD BACK BEFORE I GO INSANE.
#911 abc#eddie diaz#christopher diaz#long post#it's possible this storyline triggers something in me due to my own family / family history / family dynamics#BUT I'VE BEEN HOLDING THIS IN SINCE I WATCHED THE EPISODE#AND I CANNOT HOLD IT IN ANY LONGER#also christopher: i'm not stupid. it was a calculated move on your part to call the grandparents in particular.#you wanted to hurt your dad because you were hurt BY your dad and you knew they would do the trick#i see what you did little dude. you weren't slick.#sit in your feelings you're entitled to them but still: UNCOOL

I gave myself a writing challenge and I am fascinated by it
So basically I put the robins in a randomizer to give them a new order/role (because I just...kinda wanted to see what would happen + I like role-reversal AUs) and got results that are giving me a fucking brain blast.
Stephanie, the first sidekick who defines the role
Tim, the sidekick who dies and comes back wrong
Dick, the sidekick who saves Batman from himself
Damian, the sidekick who was never supposed to be a sidekick but would go on to prove everyone wrong
Jason, the youngest sidekick who is still the Kid Wonder
...So this is fucking wild. I've got some ideas and several of these fit perfectly (Dick's role is pretty similar to his one in canon), but some of these are fucking INCREDIBLE to explore (Steph being the first Robin is something I never even considered but tbh I kinda love it).
I probably won't write a fic or anything because tbh I don't like publishing my writing that much, but I might expand this into a full AU and post about it. I might randomize other stuff too (ie, stuff that I cannot change vs stuff that I cannot keep the same) but this fucking rules as a starting point.
#uhhh what am I calling this??#randomizedrobinsau#stephanie brown#oh my god I am so excited to figure out how tf to write this.#because she's my favorite of these characters and having HER be the first sidekick + the one who has a mentor/older sister relationship#with the others?? kickass. though I'll probably keep her and Tim's relationship as 'dating-then-exes' because I think it's funny#and then SHE can be the Robin who Tim got fixated on + figured out her identity?? holy fuck and then the angst of Tim later dying#Tim Drake#tbh I kinda wish he'd gotten a different position because 'sidekick who dies' Tim has kinda been done a lot with the standard#reverse robin aus. But it'll still be fun to write. Definitely going the Joker Junior route with this because Batman Beyond kicks ass#Dick Grayson#He'll honestly probably be the easiest. Like...his role has not changed much outside of being younger/not the one who defines this#But I still think it'll be good to see how well I know Dick beyond his eldest brother thing (which is my best way of relating to him)#Damian al ghul#damian wayne#oh this is gonna kick ass#Bruce does not want his son to be a sidekick but Damian just kinda forces his way into that role#and everybody doubts him because of his history with the league but he later proves himself more than capable#to the point that he can set out mostly on his own and still thrive#Jason Todd#Jason being the baby of the family is also something I have never thought about but holy shit it could kick ass#I really hope that I don't roll 'Jason must die' or 'Robin 5 must die' on the randomizer. I just kinda want Jason to live this time#But unfortunately I double-screwed him because he's on the 'must happen' wheel twice now. I did not think these prompts through#TBH I am so happy that none of them rolled their OG roles. because that would have been so fucking boring

"[Elizabeth Woodville] was the only member of [Crown Prince Edward of Westminster's] original 1471 council not already on the king’s council and her name headed the list of those appointed as administrators in Wales during Edward’s minority. [She remained on the council after it was expanded in 1473 and granted significant new governing and judicial powers]."
"In 1478 Prince Richard [of Shrewsbury] married the Mowbray heiress. Like his elder brother he had a chancellor, seal, household and council to manage his estates. His council, like that of Prince Edward, comprised the queen [Elizabeth Woodville] and a group of magnates and bishops, few of whom were Woodville supporters [...] It was Elizabeth who mattered, for Richard resided with her and Rivers treated his affairs as their own."
-J.L. Laynesmith, The Last Medieval Queens: English Queenship 1445-1503 / Michael Hicks, Richard III and his Rivals: Magnates and their Motives in the Wars of the Roses
#good👏🏻 for 👏🏻 her#historicwomendaily#elizabeth woodville#15th century#english history#princes in the tower#my post#Reminder that these sort of additional official positions in governance were very unusual (unprecedented) for late medieval English queens#Elizabeth's formal appointment in royal councils (+ authority over her sons) should not be ignored or downplayed in the slightest bit#It should instead be considered one of the most defining aspects of her queenship that spanned over a decade and lasted right till the end#& should also be highlighted as one of the most vital topics of discussion when it comes to broader queenly power in late medieval England#I think it also says a lot about Elizabeth's relationship to Edward IV and the regard he seems to have had for her capabilities#'The only member of the original 1471 council not already on the king’s council' that speaks VOLUMES. Once again: good for her.#It's also really frustrating how some historians (Katherine J. Lewis; AJ Pollard; Laynesmith etc) have incredibly lopsided perspectives on#Elizabeth that fundamentally *do not work* when you remember these actual facts and what they reveal about her power and influence#I'm also still baffled at Lynda Pidgeon's claim that 'Elizabeth's influence with Edward IV was less than with family members who were#part of the king's council or that of her son Edward prince of Wales'. Like???????#First of all - we *already know* that Elizabeth had the most personal influence with Edward and was the one he trusted the most#The case in 1480 & his own will in 1475 (where he referred to her as the one 'in whom we most singularly place our trust') make both clear#Second of all - ELIZABETH WAS LITERALLY ON HER SONS' COUNCILS HERSELF. HER NAME HEADED THE GODDAMN LIST. How have you missed this????????#It's actually bizarre because it completely ignores the fact that 1) Late medieval queens *weren't* generally given positions like this?#If we accept Pidgeon's (false) interpretation we have to claim that NONE of them were influential at all#Which I'm pretty sure nobody agrees with? So why have I seen people agreeing with Pidgeon's FALSE take on Elizabeth based on that lmfao?#2) Elizabeth WAS in fact given such positions. She genuinely was given unusual authority and was an Exception™ rather than the rule#Forget emphasizing her atypical role - Pidgeon has outright erased it in an effort to diminish her#She does the same thing when talking about Elizabeth's role after Edward IV's death and it's equally ridiculous and incorrect#There's stupidity and then there's willful misreading & rewriting of history according to your own imagination. This fits the latter

I've always found Alexander Saburov interesting, especially P1 Rubin's take on him where he tells how Alexander in incognito saved people from burning house and went unrecognized for the deed (nor flaunted it). Wonderful and easy to miss characterization.
YES saburov's fucked up sense of performing duty by putting himself at risk... my favorite... have had thoughts brewing in response to this that aren't quite cooked enough yet but it's very much a gendered standard that he holds himself to IMO, of idealized masculinity as a responsibility. as an active role and as the way things must be done. making the choices that he thinks need to be made regardless of how bad they are for him. pairing beautifully with katerina's self-destructive attempts to conform to the extremely feminine-gendered role of mistress, pairing wonderfully with the two of them's catastrophic attempt to conform to the heteropatriarchal nuclear family archetype by adopting the changeling :^) and especially how this is a function of how saburov relates to his Job, a role that's been passed down in his family and Actually Is critical to the function of the Town, inescapably so as long as the system of rulers exists
#it Is a little funny to me that p1 showed this family structure being flawed so extensively (with all three rulers!) and now p2 is a You#Must Get A Wife And Kids Then Everything Will Be Fine simulator (...more or less w/ all three rulers but mostly re: the player).#alexander saburov#asks#anonymous#also stream ee's song Big Climb. I have no idea how it wasn't previously on my ee exclusive saburovs playlist but it's very them#further: I do think gender is a factor in saburov's vitriol towards peter/the architects (in this view of masculinity as self-discipline#/moderation. They Don't Do It Like That) and I think that's a fun field to explore in several directions. and to contrast with rubin who ha#a similar outlook about his own gender ('perfect valor' etc.) but is an outcast and out of the spotlight in a gay coded way; whereas#alexander and his wife are under the utmost scrutiny wrt being held to Gendered Positions in the town AND are bound by duty and history to#uphold its traditions. like. saburov has no escape that could result in a healthier relationship with gender#and if you're a wise-minded saburovs t4t enjoyer... well... Okay now I'm really thinking about the Victorian SBURB session
I need to find reliable Victorian photos immediately, I need to make at least one Victorian child.
I have no idea how the game portion of SBURB would work in this world but I'd like to think that the machines that you make in SBURB would have a more steampunk-esque look to them.
#not sprites#this is just for funsies by the way I'm not claiming this idea as my own and I don't think I'll expand it very far#if anything this idea belongs to daffydilled#one kid is one of those tiny tim esque victorian kids with his symbol sewn into his hat#another is from a rich family and has his symbol on his coat#someone's weapon is just... a candle#Also#found out that the concept of “teenagers” wasn't really around back then#which would make for some compelling drama#though I'm no history buff so my knowledge of this era is surface level at best#deepsea oc discussion

God I wish my brain didn't shut down the moment I try to actually write down anything about my OCs/ideas/etc. I've got some freaks knocking around in here y'all would go wild for.

just read this part of the adventurer's bible and
do you think toshiro was originally attracted to falin (whilst still being irritated by many of her same traits in laios) because he thought his father would find her interesting???
#undescribed#eliot posts#dunme#dungeon meshi#dm spoilers#idk how i feel about him#my first impression was positive bc he had a cool character design (and i found him quite handsome personally lol)#but also he was mean to laios :(#but also laios was asking him intrusive questions and messing up his name#but also he should have just spoken up instead of expecting others to just read his mind#but also dude was a nobleman in what looks like feudal era japan#which to my (albeit limited) historical knowledge had even more intense politeness rules than like. the victorian era#so if the dunmeshi world is like the irl era then it could be a cultural thing that he felt he couldn't vocalize that stuff directly#and also he was in love with falin and seemed to like her weirdgirl tendencies. which i appreciate and respect. like. me too dude.#but also how much was genuine feelings and how much was seeing her as a novelty?#BUT ALSO did his family own fucking SLAVES??? and was he cool with that???#or did i miss something/am i misunderstanding something?#like is the guy having a sixpenceee moment here#or am i just misunderstanding context/history here?

@rozaceous replied to your post “Later TPAC teasers bc i'm busy rn”:
FULL OSTRICH, lmao that he very abruptly recognizes that he's abt to receive The Talk and deploys Jason as a defensive weapon
the talk from anyone bat-related is not going to be a Normal Talk. he doesn't want any one of these eidetic memory freaks knowing anything of his anything, which is where this talk was likely to head towards
(dick, trying to be the best brother-dad, also shameless, also raised on bat contingencies
"--and i'll send you the encrypted list of discreet shopping sites afterwards. let's move onto the next module on the psychology of kinks, and--"
korvin, "kill me. kill me now")
jason's happy to stir shit and get in people's way, there are no loyalties there
korvin just 🙈🙉 "lalalala not listening lalalalalalala" ostrich mode
#redglyphs#rozaceous#on tpac#phd-verse#my big beef with the common trope of ''ew the sex talk'' between characters is how generic and juvenile it ends up playing out#the adult is grossed out by talking about it (puritan behavior) and the kid is squealing and freaking out#the squick needs to be particular to each relationship#here it's knowing that these mfers can deduce your entire psychosexual whatever from anything you let them know#and you also know they monitor your internet browsing history#it's like having your family know your ao3 reading history#korvin would rather shoot his own dick off and he doesn't bc even then it means he has something to hide#(he doesn't really but ppl are entitled to privacy and space + that's a big thing to explore w the fucked up batfam dynamics so teehee)#actually the whole fam is fucked up w how none of them can manage to say 'dick' if they don't want the intrusive thought of dick grayson#popping up whenever they want to do things.

thinking about how griffin and robin are connected through their whiteness, but what actually brings them together is their shared chinese heritage
that even though they were born from of two different women, they have this mutual understanding of what that means and they have a shared resentment for it (the older's resentment is always, always stronger, but the younger's resentment actually has an impact)
and how robin craved the cultural significance of family and just nearly got it until the empire took that away from him too
#babel r f kuang#robin swift#griffin lovell#i guess i can see why ppl didn't really care for griffin but i did#it was just so nice to robin to finally have family and it hurt so much when that too was taken from him#good lord this book drives me insane#i feel like western individualism culture is why some didn't care abt griffin as i did bc they needed to actually care abt him as a person#which i understand tbf#it's just that for me it was enough that griffin was related to robin who had no other family#that made me care when chapter 24 happened#also i'm the older sibling i can't imagine how my younger brother would feel if i d worded and#he would have to continue on his own without guidance#babel an arcane history
