Friend!! Ok, you have got to hear about this pilot.
So last weekend I was at this community event for kids where they can climb all over emergency vehicles- fire trucks, swat trucks, ambulances, garbage trucks, so on. I was there with my niece and nephew. Anyway, one of the things the kids could check out was a helicopter. I have been RUINED by Frankie Morales and I have a certain Pavlovian response to helicopters now so I was more than happy to wait in line to get a look inside a helicopter. I figured I could at least be delusional for a minute and that would be the end of it. HOW WRONG I WAS!!
The helicopter was an air ambulance and the pilot was a medic. He was kinda short but he had on a cap, aviators, had a scruffy greying beard, and his suit was unzipped and his chest hair was chest hairing. It was glorious. He had the sleeves rolled up and tattoos on his forearms. I flirted as best I could. It was a crowded area so I didn’t have the time to really lay it on like I like to do, but it made my week anyway.
My post office guy is an older Latino with a cute accent and a steady government job and a union. I love union men. The last time I saw him he remembered me from a month ago. He was flirty. I need to find more excuses to mail things.
My Kroger girl wasn’t my type but she would flirt back with me when I flirted with her. Good times, but now she’s gone and that’s honestly fine with me.
My bank girl was probably too young for me but she was so pretty! Wherever she went, I’m certain she’s looking gorgeous. I didn’t flirt with her much because I couldn’t tell if she was into women, and above all I try to be a respectful trollop.

Serendipity should be required viewing material before anyone tries to analyze Homestuck; not only is John Cusack a universal constant, but the themes and vibes of Serendipity are so fundamentally woven into Homestuck's DNA that several of Serendipity's thesises and conversations could be lifted directly from one to the other.
In particular, the way Serendipity utilizes coincidence and circumstantially simultaneous events in order to suggest - nay, decree - that the two leads belong together, is highly reminiscent of the way Hussie uses foreshadowing, and not just for romantic couples. It's also a major window into the ultimate stance Homestuck takes with regard to romance, fate, and destiny, and also more specifically, a really good look at Karkat's own personal philosophies of romance. There's a running theme in his movies of meeting someone that perfectly matches your freak, someone you don't ever need to compromise yourself around, who brings out the best in you.
Also, some of yall need to watch a shitty romcom every once in a while and develop some emotions
#I'm genuinely not joking#if you want to understand Karkat and Homestuck better you need to watch Serendipity#at the very least so you can understand what the comic means by soul mates#i mean it's literally NAMEDROPPED during the troll romance section as the ultimate expression of finding your soul mates in every quad#people literally will be like 'i like karkat' and not watch serendipity smh#anyway the karkat movie list is serendipity • hitch • 50 first dates#he calls serendipity and hitch specifically 'pure magic' and yes. yeah.#i know we all love to clown on karkat's love of embarrassing romcoms and we're right to do so it's hilarious#but hussie also unironically calls it the best character trait he gave karkat and hes soooo correct about that#and you can tell from the way serendipity and even 50 first dates are described that those are kind of hussies genuine feelings toward them#hes right 50 first dates DOESN'T make you want to punch adam sandler#despite the occassional uncomfortable lowbrow comedy segment everything about the romance is played so straight and so genuine#maybe this shitty adam sandler romcom made me cry maybe im man enough to admit it#and idrk how else to describe serendipity besides 'pure magic'#tbh just watch it for yourself#homestuck is like 30% serendipity by volume

#@ comment directed to me in a tag. i have not talked abt them anywhere publicly but if u were deep enough in the paint in 2020ish theyre#like not super surprising. i think i wanna get back around to the trolls in my reread (so itll b a while) before i say anthing solid#just so i can go in w intent to pay closer attention again but like#overall have a low opinion on most the troll boys insofar as i see that the narrative seems to also not care for them. they seem to exist#to serve narrative purposes & end up discarded when no longer relevant. ie they dont end up very interesting and thus i view#many fans with suspicion when they have 'boys disease' ie having an outsized focus on the boys of the story despite hs being by the end#an extremely female dominated text with a lot to say about masculinity as an opressive force#tavros and gamzee are the biggest bugbears here (only really beaten out in eyebrow raising by cronus and the male dancestors)#on account of fans of them often downplaying gamzee's misogyny that is core to his role as a charismatic cult leader (or worse#sending trans women death threats when they made the factual assesment that gamzee was written to be a weird misogynist calling it#character assassination etc. man 2020 was wild.) tavros mostly just ends up being an accessory to this crime tbh. though his genuinely#complicated relationship w vriska oft being flattened to villify vriska + an inability to actually read what tavros Says...#like. if you get rid of tavros' quirk. stammering and all. and read his lines. he's kind of fucking rude? and yeah its alternia they all ar#but i have my hesitancies wrt how people seem to infantilise him (a disabled character) to the point of ignoring his dialogue and flaws#when one of tavros' core conceits (u can argue if this is . like. something hussie should have stayed out of. like its not their lane) is#that shitty ppl online will be assholes but will be allowed to get away with it due to unrelated disability. which like. it was 2010 ig#but this is hit upon again with mituna being distinctly a 4 channer with real brain damage and speech issues & all his friends letting him#get away with shit he still clearly has the cognitive capacity to know is wrong. its very messily handled but. i dont rlly like tavros ig.#will b amazed if tumblr doesnt eat these tags i went on wayy too long. but im not putting this in plaintext for obvi reasons#lucabytereads

that entire section where Dave is back in his old room for the first time in like. three years ? and he’s looking at the pictures he took when he was 13 and before everything happened and he started laughing and crying and he couldn’t stop ?? that did irreversible damage to me I think. hussie when I CATCH YOU.

I read Hussie's author notes and they were so disappointing. He dismisses Eridan and gamzee as one-dimensional nastyboys, he claims Rose and Dave's true arc was to refuse their quests and they just needed to stop feeling guilty about it, and he says karkat's final frog didn't even matter and he was just worrying over nothing. There's so much potential clearly written in and he just throws it all away bc lol. Your analysis is so much more nuanced has so much more thought put into it both with regards to who these characters are as people and the role they serve in the plot. I'd take your ideas over what hussie thinks is canon any day of the week.

Like genuinely I go back to their formspring/tumblr/forum/book notes all the time to see how on-track i am with my analyses. If you like whatever bullshit i'm talking about, then you like hussie's writing!
#like if you read all of hussie's writing back during their formspring/tumblr days#it's all usually very insightful and very clear that hussie not only cares deeply about their characters and world#but also REALLY REALLY UNDERSTANDS STORYTELLING#and it becomes really easy to pick apart what stuff they say at the end of their time on homestuck#and figure out what parts of it are frustration at the audience & what parts probably hold some truth to them#and the thing is i dont even really blame them for turning against the audience#because tbh ive been there (on a much smaller scale)#harassment/witch hunting campaigns are genuinely traumatizing and terrifying#and i really cannot overstate just how much the fandom used to go for hussie's throat over LITERALLY EVERYTHING#it was horrific to watch back then and it's frustrating now#so from the bottom of my heart as somebody who's Been There i *get it* and cant hold it against them#the worst parts of the SU and Voltron fandoms came out of homestuck#now imagine that aimed at you 24/7 no matter what you say for months and months#like people literally called hussie homophobic for saying the trolls are all bi/pan by default#and that even within that framework kanaya is explicitly a lesbian#like??????? yeah i would be pissed at the fanbase too

#he is typing#i mean i do have an idea. i think it's for a lot of reasons actually. but i think the knee jerk 'no it's COMPLETELY BAD EVERYTHING ABOUT-#-IT IS SHIT IT HAS NO REDEEMING QUALITIES LOLLOOK AT THESE WEIRDOS WHO WANT TO TALK ABOUT THEIR TERRIBLE TRASH COMIC'#is kind of... how do i put this.#not to say that i think it's 'actually good' and all criticism is unjustified or anything like that !!!!!! duh!!!!!! quite the contrary#i think that kind of reaction is definitely in part because a lot of the times when people DO claim to want nuanced conversations about it#they do in fact just circle back to idolizing it and writing off all criticisms as unjustified#so it's easier to just see someone talking about it and go 'shut the fuck up cringelord'#i think in a lot of ways the actual content of the story is viewed as inextricable from the horrid fanbase#and tbh i think the knee jerk reaction to completely write off any discussion about it is really more a defense mechanism against the-#-'fandom' than against the work itself. altho people do have issues with the work. i think a lot of the people who have that reaction eithe#ok not to be that guy but i think a lot of the people who have that reaction are people who have either never read the comic or read it-#-so long ago that they barely remember any of the actual content and can only remember it thru the insane fandomized lens#even tho the actual content might not be like that at all. i do think many (NOT ALL) of the satirical aspects of it are misconstrued#but nobody wants to have any actual conversations about it because nobody can be normal. so then when you do have an actual conversation-#-about it everyone assumes youre the same as the people who genuinely see no issues because theyre the loudest.#but like. idk like. fondness for a SATIRICAL COMIC where it is often COMMENTARY ON 2010S INTERNET CULTURE. is often like#immediately seen as endorsement of all of its flaws#moreso than it is for other things.#like someone reblogging tododeku probably does not endorse the repeated sexualization of teenage girls#but then someone reblogging karkat or whatever suddenly endorses like every time he said the r word#i do think this bias is reflective of the fact that a lot of fans ARE known for looking past or endorsing all of hussies actions as a write#but man. this is really the website where you have to put 'i think critically about the things i watch' in your carrd huh

I know there's a popular homestuck headcanon that suggests Mindfang never wrote her journal, that she was just a fanfiction author but there is a bigger brain move to play here.
The big brain headcanon is that she was very much a pirate, a corsair. Why would a noblewoman go to the seas? She wanted freedom. Because people forget she was Scratch's first student. She was Scratch's first experiment, the way he acts to Vriska, Terezi and Rose he tried with her first. He knew anything he had done to her wouldn't matter in the grand scheme, she was never meant to matter, she was only here to be a stepping stone for his communications with Vriska.
Doc Scratch penned things in about her story, Exaggerating things, even half-truths about some. About what? About her relationships. Her journal is what made Vriska throw the identities of their ancestors onto her friends. The things with Tav, Kanaya, Terezi and Eridan would not be there hadn't she tried to act out her ancestor's legacy.
Scratch did this because Vriska wouldn't have listened to him but who did she listen to? The words of her ancestor.
