Alec Lightwood Not Giving a Single Fuck About the Law
(Spoilers! So many spoilers! For everything except Secrets of Blackthorn Hall, because I haven't read it yet)
I'm not too clear on what the Accords say about Shadowhunters policing Downworlders/what Downworlders are not allowed to do. But I'm pretty sure all of these must be illegal (or at least frowned upon):
Not reporting that Magnus started a joke cult that turned in a real cult that was killing people and worshiping a Greater Demon
Letting the person actually running said evil cult go free after they had captured her because he knew the Clave would execute her and even though Shinyun was literally responsible for several murders, he thought she deserved a second chance (and Magnus related to her, and Alec wanted to spare Magnus pain)
Never reporting Elliott of the New York Vampire Clan for literally everything he has done, including biting several Downworlders at a party, having multiple incidents with faerie fruit, "accidentally" biting 17 mundanes while under the influence (including at least one time where Lily had to stop him from killing the mundane in question), and cheating on two Selkies who then caused property damage in a fight with each other
relatedly, not reporting Mordecai, the faerie fruit dealer
(I just love this entire exchange: "As the current head of the New York Institute," Maryse said, with an attempt at firmness, "if there is illegal Downworlder activity happening, it should be reported to me." "I do not talk to Nephilim about Downworlder business," Lily said severely. The Lightwood parents stared at her, and then swung their heads in sync to stare at their son. Lily waved a dismissed hand in their direction. "Except for Alec, he's a special case.")
Watching Juliette, Werewolf Queen of the Buenos Aires Shadow Market, kill a Shadowhunter and just lightly suggest she try to take the Shadowhunters alive (and then not punish her in any way for killing that one guy)
Not reporting that Ragnor Fell had found a realm for the Greater Demon Sammael and also worked for him for a period of time (I don't think the Clave would care that Ragnor didn't had a choice because of the sventhorn)
Suggested in the final battle in Queen of Air and Darkness that an effective way to render opposing Shadowhunters unconscious would be to have vampires bite them and drink enough of their blood that they passed out
Protecting Marcy, the werewolf who transformed at a club during a full moon, and never reporting her for almost revealing the shadow world to Mundanes and injuring several of them
Breaking the Cold Peace several times by visiting several Shadow Markets, interacting with faeries, and pretending not to know about multiple illegal Shadowhunter-faerie relationships (Tian/Jinfeng and Mark/Kieran/Cristina)
Not illegal but probably seen as outrageous by other Shadowhunters:
marrying Magnus in Shadowhunter gold
traipsing into a hell dimension to save Downworlders
letting a vampire (Simon) drink his blood
offering his blood to a different vampire (Lily)
raising a Downworlder child as his own (and also training that child like a Shadowhunter)
raising a Shadowhunter child that has a Downworlder parent
Basically, Alec Lightwood is a badass and the fact that he went from the type of guy who said "sed lex, dura lex" to the man who did all of this is the reason he is one of my favorite characters ever
#Alec lightwood#alexander lightwood#unless we're using that tag for Cecily's son? someone let me know#the shadowhunter chronicles#the mortal instruments#the eldest curses#Magnus bane

So, your Infinity Train crossover got me to watch the show, and... woah. Woah. I would love to know if you had any more ideas, blurbs, thoughts, anything about that crossover, because now I can't get enough of imagining the viciously murderous cat and accidentally-fratricidal robot on the train.
I'm glad you liked Infinity Train too! (and thank you!) More on the crossover... I gotta admit I haven't thought of much other than the initial "haha what if" idea. Maybe I can speculate though:
Spoilers ahead!
There were many hilarious and thoughtful takes on how Pebbles could possibly end up on the train, in the notes of the initial post. I joked that it'd just tear a hole through his structure, but there are more (and less) sane options than that.
Since we only see human passengers on the train, a lot of people would probably mistake Pebbles and Arti as denizens. Simon and Grace would probably not take to them having numbers well. I feel like they'd most likely think it was a trick, but it could shake up their perspective too.
Man humans look kind of similar to ancients maybe. That doesn't mean much to Arti - and I think humans look dissimilar enough from scavs to be spared by her wrath. But to Pebbles...
Also, iterators haven't communicated with another civilization-era sapient species in a quite a while probably. Some interesting stuff can come out of that.
How many migraines do you think Pebbles gets from trying to figure out what the hell is up with denizens? Or the train itself? I feel like he'd have an aneurysm if he had to interact with Alan Dracula. If he goes home and tries to tell the others what happened without any proof, they'd think he'd had a rot-induced fever dream.
Numbers are dependent on how close a passenger is to solving their problem. Arti, having already killed the scav chieftain, according to Rain World has hit the point of no return. So her body is completely wrapped up in numbers. But like Amelia, with enough time and determination it might be possible. The main problem is... Arti has to want to fix her problem first. The setup for her to do that is there. She's with Pebbles, so she has less of a reason to go off on a rampage unless she's being threatened. The lack of scavs wouldn't stop her from resorting to violence at this point, but the pure strangeness and unfamiliarity of her surroundings should at least baffle her into a different mental state.
I think in order to get an exit, Arti needs to make peace with herself. She must acknowledge what she has become, and to truly believe that she needs to change. It has little to do with the death of her children at that point. She needs to escape the self-perpetuating circle of violence.
Pebbles' number is much smaller (but still huge) because he's entrenched in rage and isolation and frustration on a massive timescale, but we see him eventually come to a resolution in Rivulet's campaign. How would the train define his problem though? It could be his anger at Moon and Suns, blaming them for his current state (even if Suns is partially at fault). It could be his tendency to close himself off, his refusal to talk to others or accept help. It could be his denial, believing he can handle and fix everything by himself. It could be his overall arrogance or ego. There's a lot of options there. Ultimately I think whatever brings him to think similarly to how he does in Rivulet's campaign would do the trick.
The sad thing is that Pebbles would probably be better off staying on the train too. I'm not sure if he'd be affected by the rot there, but he'd at least he could (literally) get out of his own head. And he has no choice but to touch grass interact with new people and situations. But to deny his exit would be to deny responsibility for what he's done. If he's really gotten better, that means he knows he can't run away anymore.
If Pebbles went to the train without Arti there's a chance he'd get killed or ghom'd two days into the trip. We are assuming his puppet is capable of walking for this AU, but also I do not think he knows how to walk. Good luck pink guy!
On the flipside. Pebbles could... probably take over the train even more than Amelia ever did, especially as a (bio)mechanical being himself. The only thing that could limit him are taboos maybe. Any iterator could do this, really. Lots of potential paths with that one.
Something something, One-One and iterators both solving people's big problems with varying amounts of success, and both engineering weird organisms...
...does a RW character that gets ghom'd return to the great cycle? Their soul gets devoured, or their life essence, it's not clear. I guess which one could determine what happens. But also they are in another universe where there is probably no cycle. Are ghoms a triple affirmative? Is crossdimensional travel? The latter wouldn't fit the "portable and generally applicable" part but still. This is a whole rabbit hole and a half, isn't it!
The train is dangerous and all, but that just makes Rain World characters a hilarious fit for it. Like this is just their daily life. Honestly I think their home world is more dangerous than the train, just in less wacky ways.
Lastly: I haven't even touched upon what introducing other characters could do for this narrative, or how they would react. So many possibilities!
If anyone wants to do more with this, please feel free!

The 'give me a blank notebook and I tell you about a fic I'm not writing' meme which is blatant bait but ok here goes. Call of Duty fandom, feat. the Ghost comics as a baseline. '22 timeline. The basic premise is 'Single Dad Simon Riley', because I want that man to have a kid damnit he's got All the Trauma he deserves one universe where he gets to mitigate some of that trauma. The setup is: Ghost is a mercenary who works with a select group of people, because he's *out* he's not in the Service anymore he's a goddamn single dad. He's going to leave his kid with a babysitter he trusts and he's going to go out and do the murders that the government will pay him to do. Joseph is his entire world and most of his personality at this point. He does not live on base, but near it. Cue him running occasional missions with the 141 and Soap *paying attention* to him, because he's down bad for the big man with the gentle voice and utter unhinged battlefield methodology. Gaz gives him endless shit for it. They go on a mission, it's *bad*. The kind of people they go after are monsters, after all. There's a kid, and Ghost *instantly* goes into Dad mode. He's down on her level, talkin' to her soft and gentle, and he extracts her himself because she's terrified but also he's going to be making sure she ends up with medics and then a good care home. Soap is down incredibly bad, he is so fuckin' thirsty, that man is hot as fuck and Soap desperately wants him to make any sort of indication that his flirting is accepted. Simon flat out tells him that he doesn't have room for more than one man in his life and cue Soap dying a little inside thinking that Ghost has a husband already shit he's a lucky man. It's comms banter and Soap responds with 'ah, shame. Must be the luckiest man, to have bagged you.' and all like gracefully bowing out, and Simon snorts. "He's *nine* and he's starting his new school on Monday, so if we're not out of this shithole by Saturday night, I'm gonna be a right bitch about it." He says, conversationally, and Soap perks right back up, ears standing straight up type puppy-happy attention because Soap *loves* kids. Cue Soap learning about Ghosts nephew, the kid he's raising all on his own (score!) and yeah. Yeah that's a whole thing and they get back to base and Soap catches Ghost at the gate with a hastily wrapped box of drawing pencils, because Ghosts nephew likes to draw too and Soap had these ones because he got them on a 2-for-1 sale at the art store and they're not opened. Cue an 'I'll show you my etchings' joke somewhere in there, and Ghost thaws. Just a bit. A tiny bit. He softens just a bit to say "Thank you, Johnny. I'm sure he'll love them." and then he's gone into the gloomy pre-dawn light. Soap *swoons*. Gaz, as the best friend he is, gives him a wholesale discount on the endless shit he gives him for being down so bad for an Operator that they've never actually seen officially or without his mask. Soap does in fact tape up the little thank you card Joseph drew him, that Ghost dutifully delivered to him. It has a little bar of soap on the front and the letters were made with little stamps and it's so fucking cute he cries about it.
The whole thing wraps up with a firefight in a jungle somewhere, Ghost confessing that he likes Soap a bit, a touch, just the tiniest amount really, and maybe Soap can be allowed to keep his hands, if he touches him. Soap shoots, he scores. The outro is a year or so later, with Soap showing up to the park for a youth football game, because Joseph plays and he wants to show Soap how good he is at Goalie. He's very good and Soap cheers embarrassingly loudly and Simon doesn't murder him even a little bit. I don't have the energy to write this entirely, the whole thing is goopy feelings softness, interspersed with intense violence, but it'd be fun to read if someone else wants to take this outline and run far, run fast, run screaming with it!

as a Helena fan who's witnessed this whole bit go from silly jokes/memes to genuine vitriol, it's been utterly bizarre. from what i noticed, the root of the comparison came from people fanonizing Jason to the degree of saying "he has Catholic guilt (bc of the Flashpoint priest!Jason) and he'd be an English school teacher (bc i'm assuming, his taste for classic lit) and he's female rage-coded and he would adopt/protect children" which, are canonical traits of Helena. so at first, it was sort of a joke lamenting the fact ppl would rather force unrealistic headcanons onto Jason than consume content with a woman in the Batfam. because it's sort of a tad ironic/painful to see fanonized Jason Todd who's being called all these things he isn't, when there's a canon character who *is* all of those things right there. like if that's the character you want, why wouldn't you want to read about Helena. the issue started with frustration against fanon Jason, from my experience anyway.
but then, it spiraled out of control to become a comparison of their lethal moral code and their disagreements with Bruce suddenly making Jason this stupid boy clone of Helena. which isn't true and is an insult to both of them to claim they're at all the same. they kill for different reasons, they're at odds with Bruce for different reasons. a well-written Helena and a well-written Jason really have little in common. though their interactions could be interesting, i don't even think they'd get along tbh.
i think in recent months/years, the Batfamily fandom suddenly became self aware that they grossly ignore the women of the Batfam. and now they're trying *too hard* to course correct for that. to an extent, i get why Helena isn't in the majority of fanon content- she hasn't really *been* a Batfamily member since pre-Flashpoint. the New-52 and Rebirth versions of her character are arguably not even the same character and certainly not a character as important to the Batfamily as she used to be. so why *would* a fandom mostly pulling from modern comics know who she is aside from the couple WFA episodes she's been in. (which did her *no* favors for people understanding her and also whitewashed her before the art was fixed.)
but, i think everyone's now trying to prove how woke their fandom content is (i hate using that word, it sounds very republican but i can't think of a better one.) by including women and characters of color to prove they don't just care about the boys. and sure, it's cool and all if you want to pick up Huntress comics bc you're sick of reading about stories only featuring Bruce and his "sons", but now it's like. almost a competition to prove how much more you know about the Batfam than other people when you make these jokes. i've seen the same thing happening comparing Steph and Jason recently. yes, it's important to care about the more diverse characters of the Batfam as much as you care about the boys. but now they're put on this ridiculous pedestal of being the "more cool alternatives". an organic push for content about the underrated characters is one thing, but it's another thing entirely when it's born out of a performative nature, which is certainly what this whole... thing feels like.
and the irony is, you can *really* tell the people doing this the most haven't actually read much of Helena's content outside of Gail Simone's Birds of Prey. and my hot take is, i don't think Gail Simone does a *great* job with Helena and she's often pretty sexist toward Helena (making other characters slut shame her, making Helena very promiscuous which isn't something she has a history of, etc) so, while it's important content for Helena, it can be a shallow reading of her. where all you really get about her is "pro-murder Batfam vigilante with a crossbow and a sassy personality" which sure, feels a *bit* like a shallow Jason. but that's the whole point, you have to make them both *incredibly* shallow to compare them. bc it's not about actually liking the women, it's about getting the shallow brownie points of saying "look i know who she is and i think she's *totally* cooler than Jason he's a dumb copy".
tbh even with the Jason Todd headcanons that are more egregious in feeling like "oh that's just Helena Bertinelli but a dude", it's not like it's being done on purpose. none of these fanon-only fans know enough about Helena to be purposefully stealing her traits and it really isn't that deep aside from sometimes, people just have bad headcanons that kinda make you wish they would read about characters aside from their main blorbos. but hey, they're not *required* to, and no one is an evil misogynist for having some OOC headcanons. you suck the fun out of fandom when you require people to interact with characters they aren't interested in. and depending on why someone likes Jason, they honestly might not like Helena. they're wildly different and have very different dynamics with everyone around them.
and i get it, Jason has had *wildly* inconsistent writing and there's debate upon debate of what's in character for him, what comics you should consider when trying to make fan content about him, and so on. i'm in the "anything past pre-Flashpoint isn't in the version i prefer" camp, but the whole mess of it scatters the fandom on how to write him. which i think is the actual root of him getting fanonizing beyond recognition, *not* people stealing from Helena. is it particularly headache-inducing to see Jason fans say "he's girl coded" or "he's female-rage coded"? yeah. but even those fans aren't ever going to be convinced out of their bubble by vitriolic comments made about how Jason's a total loser and Helena's so much cooler than him. and then the more canon-based fans who might *actually* like Helena and probably would read her comics if just given an honest recommendation of her character are *really* not going to want to be interacting her content/fandom. painting a broad stroke of the Jason fandom all seeing Jason as this cartoonish fanon version of himself does you no favors with anyone.
like i used to find the silly jokes/memes that were solely calling out bad fanon enjoyable as pure lighthearted "oh i wish more people liked this character the way they liked that character bc the fandom for this character is so small" vibes, but you're right about it getting out of hand. it's become the only thing people seem to talk about in the Huntress fandom space. i'd much rather discuss Helena for who she is then talk about Jason. because isn't it just a *little* ironic that in attempting to make this fandom more inclusive of the women, we still just *have* to make it about the men? you don't make Helena, or Steph or Cass or Onyx or any other underrated woman sound cool by comparing them to Jason. you just make it sound like you don't know how she stands as a character on her own. she's a cool character with a cool history (both in-universe and the meta history of the Huntress mantle) but this whole weird hate boner for Jason permeating the fandom space for her just makes people hate her instead of not know of her. and really, i can't blame anyone for that.
Like. Where and when did Helena vs Jason thing start? It's so fucking annoying and makes me think that I'll never want to interact with the Huntress fandom if/when I read more stuff about her. Which is a bit how I avoid interacting with the Nightwing fandom at large despite liking his stuff.
#necrotic festerings#reblog#batfamily meta#helena bertinelli#another reblog recced you some great places to start with her#(tho I personally disagree with them about the BoP movie that adaptation is *ass* for her character and whitewashing. but that's just me)#(for context Helena was made a mixed Black woman in the New-52 and has remained a woman of color since)#(so any content post 2014 where she isn't a woc is whitewashing.)#I don't like modern Helena but that is important and does add interesting nuance to her and should be respected so. that explains that ig#for comics I always rec starting with cry for blood or year one#huntress 1989 is good but the backstory is retconned but you do see a lot of her best traits on display there so I love it#and i'm a little mixed on her birds of prey content. bop: manhunt is not *too* bad for being by dixon. simone's work is. eeeeehhhh#important and has rlly good high moments but oh the low moments can really give you the wrong idea about helena#which is where I think *those* fans are pulling their idea of her to compare her to jason#bc wdym they're similar. *none* of her fundamental motivations even come close to comparable to jason's.#I love Helena. I would make everyone a Huntress fan if I could.#but *god* I get it if you're not bc fucking Jesus this is weird and toxic atp.#I used to laugh at some of the memes and even parroted the logic a year ago bc at first. yeah some fanon Jason fans can rlly be Like That#but now it's weird and I cringe/recoil at it.#if you can't say anything interesting about Helena without bringing up Jason then like. do you even *like* her??#or do you like the praise you get for your performative opinions. like.#it's that pop culture phenomenon of “here's my transgressive unpopular opinion hot take bc I'm more enlightened than all of you!”#suddenly becoming the accepted norm and getting parroted and parroted until it's bastardized to all hell.#bc no I don't think Jason fans hate women if they aren't a Helena fan. be so fucking for real with that nonsense.#i'm not a Talia or Selina fan bc I just don't consume enough content for them. it's *not* that deep.#if you're consuming content for Jason why would you even come across Helena.#Jason's return wasn't responsible for the death of Helena content. it was just unfortunate timing.#the real culprit was Paul FUCKING Levitz trying to bring back Helena Wayne as a Bertinelli clone#and thus fucking over the ability for Bertinelli to exist correctly in the New-52 and onward.#Grayson (2014) tried to salvage what it could of her but Levitz just screw over the chance for her to be Huntress.

Simon Kalivoda
Summary: Y/n was cold, Simon noticed, simple as that 😌👍
Simon, Y/n, Kate, and Josh were waiting for Deena and Sam to come out of the police station so they could go. Josh was sitting inside the ambulance while Kate, Simon, and Y/n stood outside.
Y/n wasn't really paying attention to the main conversation, mostly focusing on her shoes, letting her mind wander to what had just previously happened to the group at the hospital. She hadn't even noticed she was shivering from the cold.
Of course Simon noticed, though. He always notices these things, he cares a lot about her after all. Y/n always thinks it's a friend thing, but to Simon it's so much more than that.
Y/n does the same thing too, sometimes even subtle flirts. But of course they do it so much back and forth that neither of them have gotten the hint yet.
"Are you okay?" He asks, his eyebrows creasing in concern as he looked at the shivering girl.
Y/n was brought out of her thoughts from the question and looked up at the boy, "Uh...yeah, I'm fine. Why?" She questioned, rubbing her arms unconsciously.
Simon raised his eyebrow, "are you sure? You look cold. I could give you my sweater, I mean I don't really need it. The meat on my bones is enough." He joked, flexing his arms.
Y/n rolled her eyes playfully, crossing her arms, "Simon, I'm fine, really." She reassured, although the shivering proved otherwise. She was just stubborn.
Simon chuckled and rolled his eyes back at her before unzipping his sweater and taking it off, catching her off guard and slipping her arms into the arms of the sweater.
She tried protesting, even crying for Josh and Kate's help to make him let go of her but they ignored her.
Simon was amused by this as he was finally able to zip the sweater all the way up. He had to admit, she looked pretty cute in it. It was a little big on her, the sleeves reaching to her fingertips and the bottom of the sweater almost reaching down to the bottom of her thighs.
Her cheeks were flushed a bright red, they felt like they were burning from how embarrassed she felt, not to mention the way she could feel Simon's hands as they zipped the sweater up.
Simon's amused smile turned into a smirk as he saw the blush appear on her face, and he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her closer to him, he could tell that she was trying to calm herself down by the way she wasn't looking at him. He chuckled once again,
Y/n looked up at him, although she didn't want to admit it, she did feel slightly less cold, and with the added warmth from him pressing her up against his body, made her feel even better. Though she was trying her best not to freak out right then and there. Sure they've done these types of things multiple times before, it felt different this time somehow. Maybe it was because there were dead murderers chasing after them, or maybe it was because of how close she was and the way he was smirking at her...
"You didn't need to do that, loser." She joked, punching him lightly in the chest.
"Yes I did, or else you would have frozen to death you dork." He joked back, making eye contact with her.
It went on like that for a while, neither of them saying anything, both slowly leaning in without realizing it, but before their lips could touch, Deena and Sam came stomping out, clearly having no luck with Sherrif Goode.
Y/n and Simon pulled away from each other, looking away awkwardly before being told they had to leave.
Well, hopefully at some point they could continue what they started later.
For now, they were getting caught up on what Josh was explaining as they went on their way to wherever they had to go next.
All the while Y/n huddled into Simon's sweater with a small smile on her face.
-----------------------------------------------------
I didn't know how to end this and I'm very upset with myself because of it 😤😟💔

Similarities that I see between Jace and Céline
(these are just my thoughts. Press read more to see them.)
↑ this chaotic energy. You think he got it from Stephen? Nah.
Her anxiety reminds me of Jace's. And like their thought process was similar in ways.
They both struggled with belonging.
Céline corrected Robert when he said "Just like a warlock. Always for sale."
And Céline was like "Always on sale."
Again Jace energy.
Céline knew Amatis, Stephen's wife. At least, she knew enough. Amatis was sharp-tongued and stuck up. She was opinionated, argumentative, stubborn, and not even that pretty. There were also rumors that she still secretly associated with her werewolf brother. Céline didn't much care about that—she had nothing against Downworlders. But she had plenty against Amatis, who obviously didn't appreciate what she had. Stephen needed someone who would admire him, agree with him, support him. Someone like Céline. If only she could make him see that for himself.
_
Jace's smile was as bland as buttered toast. "Go on, go after him. Pat his head and tell him he's still your super special little guy. Isn't that what you want to do?"
But he couldn't look at Simon without wanting to kill someone.
“And even back then, in that stupid coffee shop. When I saw you sitting on the couch with Simon, even then that felt wrong to me—i should have been the one sitting with you. The one that made you laugh like that. I couldn't get rid of that feeling. That it should have been me.”
↑ Their bitterness, anger, jealousy, and envy towards the person who had the person they wanted and in general has the same energy in my opinion.
They both were angry and jealous of people who had it better or they considered to be good—Like, that was why Jace hated Simon so much at first, because Simon was everything Jace thought he'd never get to be, he just didn't realize it.—And Céline was angry of the kids in the academy who had loving parents and good childhoods, and weren't damaged like she was—they both were angry because somebody was someone or had something they thought they'd never get to be or have. (In Céline's case she never actually got it, not really.)
They both like to wander around when upset.
They both aren't too fond of the Silent Brothers. And I think that has to do with their head being full of certain things they don't want others to know, and the Silent Brothers speak in your mind, almost like they're reading your thoughts.
They're both observant, which could be from growing up in abusive and toxic environments but could also just be they're observant people.
They both can tell when someone is off. We see this when Céline sees through Valentine's mask. Jace often saw through the lies of people in TMI and still does.
And the both hate being pitied. Like it angers them when people pity them, we see that with Jace quite often in TMI, but we see it when Dominique says this: “Every Downworlder in Paris knows about poor Céline Montclaire, wandering the city like a murderous little Éponine. We all feel a little sorry for you.”
And then Céline thought this: Céline lived with a steady, secret simmer of rage, but now she felt it boiling over.
↑ Again, the above reminds me of Jace. He lived with anger that he kept under control but would boil over when triggered.
They're both sensitive. And get hurt easily.
“I wish I could be more like you,” she admitted.
In what sense?
“You know, just shut off my feelings? Feel nothing. For anybody.”
There was a long pause, and she wondered if she had offended him. Was that even possible? Finally, his cool, steady voice spoke.
This is a wish you should dispense with. Feeling is what makes us human. Even the most difficult feelings. Perhaps especially those. Love, loss, longing—this is what it means to truly be alive.
__
“I think—my father was sorry he had a parabatai,” he said. “Now I have to go live with a man my father was sorry about. I don't want to be weak, I don't want to be sorry. I want to be the best.”
If you pretend to feel nothing, the pretense may become true, said Jem. That would be a pity.
↑ They both wished to feel nothing, and had Jem tell them that wasn't as great as they thought. But they both still desperately wanted to not feel.
When she was a child, her parents had often refused her iratzes after training sessions, especially when her injuries were caused by her own mistakes. Let the pain remind you to do better next time, they told her. All these years later she was still making the same mistakes.
_
“No! it's better for your parents not to know it happened at all. It was just bad luck that one of them got me. I'm a good fighter,” Jonathan protested sharply.
“It's my fault I got hurt,” said Jonathan. “I know excuses are for incompetents. It won't happen again.”
↑ this bit on making mistakes, or when getting hurt.
Céline always carried a misericord blade.
↑ Reminds me of someone else who always carries blades.
They both were aware of the consequences of putting a rune on someone that they weren't 100% sure were Nephilim, and it was different circumstances but they did it anyway. Jace gave Clary her first rune and Céline gave Rosemary her first rune (I think).
More furious at her own instinct for mercy. After all, her parents had never shown any to her. Her parents had done their best to teach her that mercy was weakness, and cruelty was strength.
_
Jonathan said the word "weakness" with horror. Jem wondered what a man who had drilled a boy to fight like that might have considered weakness.
↑ Mercy, kindness, gentleness, etc. Was taught as weakness to them both growing up.
They both hate being predictable. Kinda like when Rosemary knew Céline would keep her secret. Céline hated that she knew that. Remember in CoA when everyone was guessing that Jace said no to Valentine, and he hated it.
They both never really felt like they were ever a kid. Because again, the environment they grew up in forced them to grow up faster than they should have. Which is why Jace didn't think of himself as one when he threw himself into battle.
like Jace I don't think Céline liked to upset the balance of things, meaning they don't pry and don't pressure. Which often gets them labeled as "not too bright" or "unobservant" they're both observant, they just don't say it out-loud. Jace is definitely like this, but I see Céline as this too. Stephen said she always needed to be told what to do, but I don't think it was that exactly, I think she just didn't like to upset things. Which growing up in an abusive and toxic environment does that. But I think it's also just part of who they are.
That sweet and obedient daughter of the provençal countryside. They knew how devoted she was to her parents. Such a dutiful daughter.
↑ Valentine often called Jace his obedient son. I see Jace in this part as well. Sebastian called him Valentine's "sweet boy."
She could close the door on the past, start again. She could choose a life without pain, without suffering or fear.
But who would she be without pain?
This also reminds me of Jace. Obviously he did end up choosing to walk away from Valentine. But there are times he doubted, because in reality he himself didn't know who he was without the pain he'd experienced, without his past with Valentine. And they both believed that the pain and suffering had made them stronger. Jace later knows that isn't true, but I see the similarity there.
They're both said to have vulnerability about them that made you wan to protect them. To keep them safe. Jocelyn said you couldn't really hate Céline, and I think it's kinda the same with Jace.
Both of them refused to ask for help. Thinking they could do it all on their own.
Céline could tell how much it hurt—and how determined the woman was to reveal no pain. She knelt by her side. Rosemary flinched away. “Let me see—I can help."
_
“Tell me what happened first.” She tried to yank her wrist back, but his grip was incredibly strong. “I can help you.” — this is in Clary's pov.
↑ Their willingness to help the pretty stranger they didn't know.
They both often felt they didn't have a choice in some things.
They both felt achingly alone at some point. And very much misunderstood.
The thought of losing the only family they ever had scared them, and they were willing to do anything to keep them. Even if in Céline's case hers wasn't that real.
They were both said to be beautiful, and breakable. Fragile almost. These were Jocelyn's words. That beautiful things were easily broken.
They both grew up denied of love and care.
Céline had low self esteem in a lot of areas. We often see Jace as the confident character who doesn't have insecurities or low self-esteem. but he does. Jace didn't like himself, his looks don't play a part here, he didn't like himself. He actually didn't feel good enough or worth much, that's why he made so many superiority jokes, because he truly didn't feel good enough but had to make everyone believe he did. Céline didn't feel good enough either, but she tried not to let it show.
Their childhood gave them bad coping mechanisms and suicidal tendencies. They both self harmed in ways, believing that pain made you stronger is one of them.
We often look over the fact that while some of Jace's mental struggles did come from the trauma of his childhood and growing up around war, that he was already at a high risk with a mother who experienced similar things. Because if you have a parent who has mental illness the offspring are at higher risk of developing one. And his childhood didn't help with that.
And we know what they both truly wanted was to be loved and safe. Really. Jace always thought he wanted to fight all the time, but by the end of tmi he realized he just truly wanted to be happy and left alone, he just wanted Clary and his family. Céline wanted that too, but she never got it.
You all realize they would understand each other, right? Like if Cassie ever did something where they somehow met, Céline would understand Jace and he would understand her.
Céline would have never raised Jace with anything but love and care. She would have made sure he never knew a childhood like hers. But he did. He ended up knowing what that was like. And it would have broken her even more to know that.
But she would probably stab Valentine in the face, which I'd like to see.
Friendly reminder that Jace looks like her around the eyes (no I won't shut up about this.)
There's probably more but until we learn more we won't know. Just remember he may be a Herondale but Céline is also there.
@khaleesiofalicante I tagged you 😎

TSC except it's incorrect quotes and it's part 2 and it's really fucking long sorry.
Cordelia: I like your top.
James, wearing a very bright shirt: Thank-
Matthew: Thanks dude, I like you to.
_
Anna: Gender is a game and I have the cheat codes.
_
Clary, at Starbucks: Can I get a venti caramel macchiato with, uh... seven shots of espresso.
Simon, behind her: Jesus Christ, Clary, just do cocaine.
_
James: If you were to die, what would be your last words?
Matthew: Finally.
James: No-
_
Izzy, on the phone with Magnus: Is it okay if I bring my weird roommate?
Simon: Would you please stop calling me that.
_
Clary: You sure you're sober enough to drive?
Jace: Yeah, I didn't drink anything.
Clary: Okay, go get the car.
Alec: [running after Jace]
Clary: It's okay, he's sober!
Alec: HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE!
_
Will: Jem, you have beautiful eyes.
Jem: You too.
Tessa: ...
Tessa: Did I miss something?
Will: I'm straight, I just like his eyes.
Tessa: You're gay for his eyes.
Will: Exactly!
Will: Wait, no
_
Lucie, walking out in a new outfit: How do I look?
Matthew: Holy shit, that's the ugliest thing I've ever seen.
Lucie: Excuse you?!
Matthew: No, not you, the thing sitting beside you.
Alastair: Fuck you.
_
Magnus: You sure know a lot about the law.
Julian: I do a lot of borderline illegal shit.
_
Cordelia: Lucie! Don't let go!
Lucie, dangling from the side of the cliff: WHY THE FUCK WOULD I LET GO?!
_
Kit: I think I forgot to sleep because I was looking at memes.
Dru: If you ever wonder why you have no friends, just remember that sentence.
_
Christopher: Oh, tiddlywinks.
Matthew: JUST SAY FUCK
_
Will: Swear words are banned in this house, if you say one you'll be grounded.
Matthew: Heck.
Will: You're on thin fucking ice, kid.
_
Jace: You may not know this, Alec, but I'm a flawed person.
Alec: I do know that.
_
Dru: [reading the exorcist]
Dru: [laughs]
_
Matthew: I know you can be "underwhelmed" and you can be "overwhelmed" but...
Matthew: Can you ever just be whelmed?
James: ...
Christopher: I think you can in Bulgaria!
_
James: I think I'm in love with Cordelia.
Grace: Congratulations! You're officially the last one to know.
_
Tessa: James, what are you doing here? Weren't you making spaghetti tacos with Mattew, Christopher, and Thomas?
James: Well, I was.
Tessa: ... was?
James: Well, I- it was just getting hot downstairs because of the fire.
Tessa: THE WHAT?!
(Downstairs the kitchen is completely on fire)
Christoper, looking around while Matthew and Thomas try to put the fire out with olive oil: Oh, this isn't good.
_
Jace: Please shut up.
Simon: Well, since you asked nicely, no.
_
Will: No pain, no gain!
Matthew: But I'm in constant pain and I've lost everything-
_
Matthew: If you'll excuse me, I must attend to my evening affairs.
James: You mean drinking wine and eating gummy bears until you pass out on a chaise?
Cordelia: Or reading Layla and Majnun and crying in the bath because they didn't deserve it?
Lucie: Or shouting your own poetry from your balcony?
Matthew: All three, in that order.
_
Will: What have I told you about comparing Tatiana to the devil?
Lucie: ... that it's offensive to the devil?
_
Jamie: These people are my friends!
Jamie: I've known them for twelve hours!
_
Clary: What are we gonna do?
Simon: Don't worry, you're so small they probably won't see you.
Clary: Simon, is this really the time to be making short jokes?
Simon: Clary, it's never not the time, because just like you, life is short.
_
Matthew, drunk: Always strive to eat the stars.
Lucie, half asleep: Aren't they too hot?
Matthew: Blow on them first, idiot.
_
Cashier: Would you like your check?
Ty: If someone is being murdered right now it would be my alibi, but if someone gets murdered in the store they could pin it on me.
Cashier: Sir?
Ty: I want to speak to a lawyer.
_
Magnus: If you had to choose between Jace and all the money I have in my pocket, which would you choose.
Alec: Depends. How much money are we talking about?
Jace: Alec????
Magnus: Eleven cents.
Alec: Sold.
Jace: ALEC?!!??!?!
_
Alastair: Cursing is for those who have a limited vocabulary.
Matthew: You are an audacious, ideologically unsound, captious, presumptuous, motherfucker.
_
Clary: Hey, uh, maybe we need Simon's help with this one?
Jace: I would literally rather die.
_
Cristina: Name a way to be nice to people.
Kieran: Don't stab them.
Cristina: ...
Cristina: Setting the bar a little low but I'll allow it.
_
Tessa: Where have you been?
Will: Emotional hell.
_
Kit: I made you all of you into Sims, look.
Jace: Where are you?
Kit: I'm in the grave in the backyard.
Jace:
Clary:
Jace: Put me there to.
Clary: Oh my god-
_
Emma: I have the sharpest memory, name one time I forgot something.
Zara: You forgot me in a Walmart parking lot, like, three weeks ago.
Emma: I did that on purpose, try again.
_
Matthew: Will, did you know "thot" means "thoughtful person."
Will: Really? I did not know this modern slang.
(later)
Will: Thank you for helping me with the stables, Tessa, you're such a thot.
Tessa, wheezing: I'm a WHAT?
_
Julian: [choking]
Kit: I'm trying to call 911 but the 9 button isn't working!
Dru: Just flip your phone upside down and use the 6.
Julian, stopping his choking for a second: What the fu-
_
Emma, getting in the front seat: Alright, is everyone ready to go?
The Blackthorns: Yep!
Emma: Okay, let's go.
(looks into the mirror to see Zara running after the van)
Emma: [whispers to herself] Goodbye you little shit.
_
Cordelia: What the hell is going on??
Matthew: Oh, great, you heard my cry for help.
Cordelia: You mean your girly scream?
Matthew: I MEAN MY CRY FOR HELP
_
James: The risk I took was calculated.
James: But holy shit am I bad at math.
_
Izzy and Magnus: [getting arrested at a protest]
Cop: Fake ID's, fake credit card. Got anything on you that's real?
Izzy: My tits.
Magnus: My ass.
_
[in a group chat]
Dru: Adding "lmao" does not hide your pain.
Kit: Yeah it does lmao.
_
Matthew: Excuse me, who made James the boss of the group.
Christopher: You did.
Thomas: You said, "James should be the boss".
Lucie: And then you said, "lets vote," and it was unanimous.
Cordelia: And then you made him a plaque that says, "Boss Of Us".
Anna: And put little sparkles all over it.
Matthew: ... All valid points.
_
Matthew: And once again, James and Matthew save the day.
Lucie: You didn't do anything.
Thomas: It was all James.
Matthew: We're a package deal. Everyone knows that.
_
Jem: I am not "too nice"!
Will: Jem, you apologized-
Jem: I have manners!
Will: -to the waiter who spilled soup on your lap.
_
Kit: You wanna see how hardcore I am?
Kit: [punches a wall]
Kit: Take me to the hospital.
_
Julian: People ask me how I handle the rest of my family so easily.
Julian: The truth is, I don't.
Julian: I have no control over them.
Julian: I walked into the house today and Mark shot me in the neck with a nerf gun.
_
(At a New Years Eve party)
Alec, to the TMI gang: I would like to make a toast!
Alec, raising his glass: I cannot believe we have gone through another twelve months of absolute fuckery.
Alec: Cheers!

EPILOGUE (pt. 2)
SIMON
Lady Ruth has practically dragged us inside and into our room, "Simon! Baz! Get comfortable and settle in. I'll be downstairs making you boys some snacks."
She patted my arm, "We can all watch Mr. Bean later. Oh! Jamie loves it. He'll be back from work in an hour."
If she could, she would have hopped her way out, but I think her age can't keep up with her energized personality.
She has been like this ever since she believes that her family got reunited. Happy-go-lucky aura seeps out of her like my magic used to from my body. Like sparks from the skin pores.
I think it's something in our family after all.
I always feel like an outsider inside this house. The walls, the furniture, the rug on the floor are too expensive for me to feel a part of it. But Baz seems like he was born here.
He's wearing a three pieces suit (again) today. A shade of grey that gleams silver in the light and a black button-down with the collar buttons open. His shirt color matches his hair and he looks like he's one of the antiques decorated in this room.
He made sure I don't feel left out in his fashion ramp-walk show and dressed me up in his light blue jumper and white trousers with white lace-up shoes. He cast "Like a glove!" on the jumper and now my red wings stand out quite a contract to the rest of my (his) clothes.
"Do you think Lady Salisbury knows who I am actually?" Baz walks over to me and wraps his arms around my waist.
I place my own hands on his shoulder. "You mean vampire? No. I don't think so." I don't think Lady Ruth would care though. All she cares about is how much of a gentleman Baz is.
"I meant your boyfriend." He narrows his eyes as if it's my fault he has so many secrets and I should be knowing which of them he is referring to.
I lean in to rub my nose on his cheeks. Smells of cold water. "Maybe? Maybe not?"
"Snow, will you tell her if she ever asks?" He has my tail in his hand, rubbing it between his fingers.
Will I? Probably.
Baz is kind of an award for me. A medal. A treasure. Being with him is good for my status. If I could I would have flaunted him to the entire world.
"I will, babe." I kiss him because I'm a fool and I can't resist him.
SIMON
Baz and Lady Ruth- she wants me to call her "Gran" but I'm still hesitant (maybe one day I will. I just need some time to get used to all this. To believe all this is true.) are still at the living room watching Mr. Bean and I'm at kitchen trying to find a can of cider. Jamie hasn't yet come back home from work, we saved him some egg and cress.
My phone rang in the back of my pocket. (Jamie has gifted me this new phone on my birthday. I'm so not used to this. I miss my old phone, it was fine for me. Just needed to replace the battery.)
"Penny?" I answered the phone.
"Simon Snow Salisbury! Do you even have time for me?" Her voice was half sarcasm and full anger.
Ever since she started dating Shepard, Penny and I have had less time for each other. Is this what people do? Outgrow their friendships?
She went to America with him without telling anybody. I was so mad at her. But then she got mad at me for not telling her about my family. And then we kind of nullified each other's anger.
Shepherd moved in with Penny and now he's a part-time journalist. I think he got enrolled in Penny's uni too but I'm not sure. Professor Bunce loves him and Headmistress Bunce hates him as much. And between all chaos Penny, herself hardly has any time left to catch up with me. I wanted to tell her that, but I don't want to get shouted at.
"I have all the time for you Penny. What's up?" I grab the cider can and walk out of the kitchen. I see Baz looking at me when I walk into the living room and I point him I'll be at our room.
"I was hoping we all could meet. I called Agatha too. She's busy with Niamh and doesn't wanna leave the goats alone. I guess she'll spend her Christmas with her girlfriend. But you two! I'll murder you two if you don't come."
Agatha and Niamh are the talks of the mages now. They both are taking care of the goats and a lot of people think that's what restored the peace at Watford.
Baz can't stop laughing at the irony of how Agatha and I had different preferences.
I took the stairs and walked inside our room, closing the doors behind. The room was dark, with only outside street light coming through the window to illuminate the room faintly.
"Just tell us when and where and we'll come."
I sat on the bed, taking a sip of the cider.
"Tomorrow, at my house. Shep is also going. Dad says he wants to chit-chat with him. Mum is at school so it isn't a worry. Did you know the veil lifted and my aunt visited her again to tell her not to look for her books? I think my mum will look for the books just to provoke her. Circe, I've got so much to tell you. Let's all meet! I've also got something important to announce."
"Don't tell me you're pregnant Penny!" I say, only half-joking. Penny's parents already had her when they were her age. So who knows?
"No, Merlin!" She screams so loud I had to pull away the phone to save my ears. I could hear the distant giggling of Shepard. "Just come tomorrow by the evening okay? You'll find out."
"Sure, Penny." She ends the call and I laugh. I'm happy for her. She found someone who looks at her like she's made of magic. Which is true either way.
I place the cider on the bedside table and plops on the bed. The room makes me feel like an outsider. But it also feels like it's welcoming me. A part of me feels like it missed being here all this time. Sometimes it actually feels like I belong here. Maybe I do.
I close my eyes, feeling sleepy.
Suddenly it's so cold. I shiver, bringing my wings around me to stay warm but it feels like the cold breeze is inside me. Like my blood is freezing up. My wings envelopes me tightly as a response but it feels more claustrophobic than comforting. Turning around in bed I feel my tail whipping around too. It gets so much cold so suddenly that I feel like I'm having all my nerves in my body breakdown. It's hard to open my eyes too. My lips quiver. I can't speak. I'm freezing. I'm solidifying.
"My rosebud boy." The voice echoes within me.
Rosebud boy? Natasha Grimm Pitch?
"My rosebud boy," The voice is crying, "I'm happy you're finally home."
I can't breathe. I can't open my eyes. I'm crying.
"I'm happy you're safe." I can feel the voice. It resonates within me. I had heard it before. "Simon..."
I open my eyes, tears involuntarily rolling down my cheeks. My whole body is frozen solid. And then I see her.
Golden hair and a face I recognize. Lucy. Mom?
Her hands are stretched out to touch my face but I really can't see her hand. It's like she's a streak of light. And within the light, I could hardly see the features of her face that looks so much like mine.
"We were so happy to have you, Simon. You make me so proud." She's not speaking, but I can hear her voice inside my head. My head thumps with each word. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you. I'm sorry I left you."
She's vanishing. The light is fading. I want to call out. Mom!
"I love you so much," She's leaving. No! "my rosebud boy..."
"Mom!" I found my voice hoarse and scratching down my throat harshly. I think I saw her smiling sadly before the room is back in its darkness. The coldness fades away as abruptly as it came.
But I can't stop shaking. My wings are flapping violently behind me and I'm sure I'll knock something over with my tail. I sit up, curling my knees to my chest to calm down. Mom... Lucy... She had visited me before. She came back...

City of Angels - 4
{Part Three}{Master List}
As Yuto predicted, Raven wasn't allowed to keep her weapon. He almost smiled at the petulant look she gave the guard when she was asked to hand it over.
She wanted to yell and complain when she was frisked, but she knew she was too far out of her element to do so.
Once she was past the main entrance, the building completely blew her mind.
Yuto walked up to a keyless door and did something on the panel next to her. Raven couldn’t replicate it if she tried.
“Please follow me.” Yuto said.
This time she looked up at him and got her first full look.
He was tall with a nice caramel complexion. His eyes were dark, but still seemed to hold a level of warmth to them. His hair was slightly curly, thrown into a ponytail on the top of his head, small wisps falling down around his eyes and his neck.
Raven had to hand it to him, he was gorgeous.
“You're awfully polite for a fucking gangster.” Raven said suddenly.
“Thanks.” Yuto responded dryly, turning towards Raven slightly.
Yuto kept walking into a lobby area and pointed to a set of chairs.
“Take a seat, it'll be a moment.” He said, disappearing behind a set of doors.
Raven wasn’t alone though. There was a man stationed right outside the doors.
Raven sat there, watchful of the mean looking man in a sharp suit.
Raven didn't scare easily, but this man was clearly ready to throw down, anytime and anywhere. That put her on edge. Especially since she was stripped of her weapon.
“Simon, send her in.” Raven heard Yuto speak faintly a moment later. She exhaled a breath, silently thanking Yuto for getting her away from the other man.
She watched warily as the man walked over to her.
“Get up.” he said roughly as he yanked her arm, jostling her rib.
“I'm injured you goddamn brute.” Raven spit out, pulling her arm from his grasp.
Simon stopped and turned to her abruptly.
The cold look in his almost black eyes sent fear through Raven.
“Yuto may have played nice, but I don't. Run your mouth to me one more time and I'll cut that pretty little tongue out.”
The sarcastic reply was right at the top of her tongue. Luckily it never left her mouth.
Simon led her to an expansive room, Mr. Big sitting at a desk on the far side from her.
Raven had to stifle her laughter at the image. Contrary to his name, Mr. Big was a man of small stature and it looked like the room was trying to swallow him whole.
Simon went to stand next to Mr. Big while Yuto hovered near the middle of the room. It seemed as though he had put himself between Raven and the others. Raven wasn’t sure if it was intentional or not, but she tried not to be touched by the gesture.
“Raven, come in.” Mr. Big prompted.
“Um, I'd rather not actually.” Raven said, not moving from her spot.
She watched as Simon took a step towards her, causing her to flinch involuntarily.
“Alright alright, fucking creep.” Raven said lowly.
Simon nearly snarled while Mr. Big laughed at her words
“Don't have self preservation do you?” Mr. Big asked her.
“Also don't have time for bullshit, but here I am.” Raven said, plastering a fake smile on her face.
“Should we just get right to the point then?” The boss asked.
“Preferably.”
“Is this you?” he asked as he turned the TV on, showing cctv footage of her with the guy in a headlock, gun pointed at the other.
“If I deny it, will you believe me?” Raven asked hopefully.
“No.”
“Then why even bother asking?”
“What did I tell you?!” Simon asked venomously
Raven shrugged, knowing she was probably going to die soon anyway.
“That I had a pretty little tongue.” she said, tone bored.
She could have sworn she heard Yuto ask her to stop.
“Fine.” She found herself saying.
“Yes it's me. What about it? Did I embarrass three of your henchmen or something?”
It was quiet for a minute while Mr. Big seemed to think about what to say next.
“Total opposite actually.” he finally said
“You mean to tell me that three grown men getting their ass kicked by a woman barely five foot tall isn’t embarrassing?”
“I couldn't give a shit about those men, Raven.” Mr Big said.
Raven was now thoroughly confused. If it wasn’t about the men, what was it about?
“So then can someone tell me what the hell I'm doing here?” She asked, raising her voice a little.
“Ari.” Mr. Big said, giving no other details.
“Ari?” Raven asked quickly, panic shooting through her whole body.
“What about her? You didn't hurt her did you? God damnit! Don't you bastards have any morals? She's a child. A CHILD!” Raven screamed at him.
“And you!” she said, taking four long strides to get to Yuto.
“You should have just killed me in my fucking apartment instead of bringing me here! You somehow built a false sense of security in me, letting me think I’d live. I fucking hate you.” Raven said, pushing Yuto roughly.
She felt more embarrassed than anything else. She’d let her guard down around Yuto and she was paying for it now.
“Raven, stop.” Yuto said, not actually attempting to stop her movements. He let her push him and slap him harshly on the chest, but he was not moved from his spot.
“No! Fuck you. I am such an idiot. I wish I’d have shot you in the throat when I had a chance. That creepy fuck was right.” Raven said, stopping her assault and pointing to Simon. “You played nice. Jokes on me I guess.”
“Are you done now?” Yuto asked, raising his voice.
“No. I’m just getting started actually! Since I’m not leaving this room alive, let’s air everything out!”
She turned her attention to the boss.
“You’re a horrible person. You run this town on fear. What for? Everyone knows you’re the Big man around here. Stupid ass pun intended. You control the money, the guns, the cops, the drugs. You control everything. No one questions that and no one's tried to stop you. You have people like big mean and scary next to you that overpower people. You murder people, people who don’t fucking deserve it, and now you’re going after another child? What the fuck could an innocent child have done so wrong deserve a trip to see you. So much for a fucking safe House."
Raven stopped for a second before looking up at Simon.
"And you...you're just a fucking creep. Tough man that bullies people. Here's your chance." Raven said, beckoning Simon forward.
"Come at me face to face. Don't be a pussy and shoot me in the back. Let me get a few good shots in before I'm dead."
Raven was running on pure adrenaline at this point. Her sense of self-preservation had really left her.
She watched as Simon angrily took off his suit jacket and threw it on the ground.
"You will stop right now." Commanded Mr. Big in a booming voice Raven didn't think possible to come out of such a small man.
"Fuck you." Raven spit out defiantly, staring the man down.
"I wasn't speaking to you. I was speaking to Simon. I'd also prefer if you didn't speak to me that way. But if you must, fine." Mr. Big said.
"What?" Raven asked, standing up straighter.
"Simon you may leave."
Simon nodded his head before picking his suit jacket up and heading towards Raven and the door. Raven watched him walk confidently towards her.
"I'm not done with you yet." Simon said lowly as he passed by Raven.
"From what I can see, we haven't even started yet." Raven bit back.
Simon stopped his movements and turned back toward Raven. Raven thought she saw Yuto shift towards her in her peripheral vision, but she couldn’t be sure.
"Simon! Get out now." Mr. Big commanded again.
Raven watched him walk out the door before turning back towards Mr. Big.
"He's your go to guy, right, your assassin? Why'd you send him out?" Raven asked.
"Because his services aren't needed here."
"Okaaay. So can someone please tell me what the fuck is going on?"
"We could have done that ten minutes ago if you would have just shut your damn mouth and listened." Yuto said, using the same exasperated tone he had been using with her the whole time.
"I'm going to be really honest with you. Keeping my mouth shut, not my strong point." Raven admitted.
"Yeah, no shit." Yuto nearly laughed.
"As I was saying." Mr. Big cut in.
"Ari. The girl you saved today."
And just like that Raven was tense again.
"She's my daughter."

How does one write Simon Blackquill? (This is a cry for help because I have no idea how and I'm trying to write a story that has been sitting in my folder for the past 7 months and I want to finish it but how does one write him my God... ;_;)
SO I know I’m still on like…unannounced hiatus as I try andfigure out what I want to do in the face of tumblr’s nsfw ban (which I hate, soI’m wrestling with my desire to not really use tumblr anymore out of protestvs. wanting to stay because I enjoy running this blog for the most part). BUT I saw this and knew I had to answer! :D
OKAY, so it’s hard for me to exactly say what might be bestsimply because him pre 5-5 and post 5-5 can be slightly different, so I willjust go over how I write him and stuff! Anddon’t worry; it took me a while to get his voice down myself, and even now Istill sometimes wonder if I’m writing him alright (but I look back at somethings in the beginning of my AA writing career and I think I’ve been able to getcloser to him than I was)!
Simon is odd because he honorable, snarky, a troll(ish), protective, emotional, scary, and soft all at once. He hasa very specific vision of honor and adheres to that very strictly – this samurai code he follows was his reasoning forwhy he was ready to sacrifice himself for Athena. In court, too, he has a specific set ofstandards and methods that he finds to be legitimate (which he allows) and just ‘tricks’(which he hates). He is very intolerantof things he finds dishonorable – hence why he did everything in his power (andwas successful) to make sure that Apollo was not able to use his perceptionability in court (until he found it a necessary evil to taking down thephantom). To him, this is just a trickand has no legal or scientific basis. Healso does not like the dirty tricks that Nahyuta sometimes plays – he getsinvolved in 6-4 partially because he found Nahyuta using Athena’s hearingability against her to be underhanded.
(cut because holy shit this got long I am sorry I can’t help myself)
His respect for people varies depending on if he finds themhonorable and to be a worthy ally or opponent. In court, he refers to the opposition with the honorific -dono as a wayto show his respect of them as an enemy. He is very poetic (in his own way) when describing…most things, butespecially courtroom battles – they are, to him, akin to actual war, and thewords and arguments people use are weapons and blades. His respect (or lack thereof) can usually beseen in how he addresses people. Thosehe respects get their actual name and an honorific. Those he does not get a nickname atbest. (Example – in 6-4 he starts outcalling Nahyuta ‘Sahdmadhi-dono,’ but once Nahyuta loses his respect, hechanges it to ‘Prosecutor Sad Monk’ on top of just flat out insults.)
THAT BEING SAID his having respect for people does not meanthat he always…treats them that way. Simon is The Gadfly/Troll trope – he likes to provoke people and makefun of them and make them uncomfortable…either because he finds it amusing(most of the time), or because he is trying to get them to figure something out(usually in the form of ‘tough love’ especially with respect to Athena in6-4). In prison he was a prankster andjust reveled in doing things to messwith his fellow inmates. He has an extremely dark sense of humor (gallows-type)due probably needing to have it in his own way in dealing with his prison sentence, and laughs at his own jokeswhile everyone else/most people around him stare awkwardly and feel uncomfortable. He used this in court a lot too; when peoplestill thought him a murderer, he would act like he was committed to violence andwas about to cut them all down and then when everyone was cowering andterrified he’d be like “lol just kidding you’re all pathetic but you shouldhave seen your faces.” He also used hisfrightening reputation and appearance to his advantage in court – he wouldglare and bang on the table and break his shackles as a way to unnerve peopleand gain that sort of psychological advantage. Andwhen he was seriously angry? Well…that was terrifying.
In the English version of the game, Simon is said to be asamurai, but he actually is more akin to a ronin – a masterless samurai. Metis was his master/mentor, and he lost herand so does not hold that same sort of reverence for (almost) anyone, which iswhy he is so powerfully devoted to her and preserving her legacy and honor and savingher daughter. (I say almost because Iwould say that Edgeworth is the closest thing he has to a new ‘master’ in thesense that Edgeworth helped save him and is his boss and is highly respected, etc. So where I think he makes fun ofeveryone else he respects, he does not do the same to Edgeworth, who is more onthe ‘revered’ level akin to Metis (though still less than her). Yourmileage may vary on that though.)
Things that do not interest him get zero/minimal attention. In fact, he will go out of his way to make others do things for him. In this sense, he actually might be thelaziest of the prosecutors – sure he takes his job seriously and will fight inthe courtroom to the best of his ability, but he will also try and get thejudge and the police and the defense to do parts of his job for him. Simply because he doesn’t feel like it, and/orsimply because he can. The easiest example is how he convinces the judgeto do the opening statements in most cases just…because he doesn’t want to. The one he actually does dothe opening statement for is the case that is personal to him and so he takes astrong interest in it.
So, on the outside, Simon is rough. His sense of honor does not mean he is respectfulin the traditional ‘respectful person’ sort of sense and most people who cross his path would probablyconsider him brash and rude.
On the inside, though, and at his core, Simon is extremelyprotective and loyal and emotional. Hisprotectiveness comes out mostly with respect to Athena – he might make fun ofher and tease her relentlessly but the moment someone does something toactually hurt her in any way, he ison the warpath and puts himself in the path between whoever is doing that andher. This is the other reason he gets involved in 6-4; he saw that Athena washurting and panicking and came to help her (while at the same time shaming Nahyuta and the entire courthouse audience). Sure, he did this with his own ‘tough love’type of approach, but he came to her defense without hesitation. So even after he is out of prison, Athena is still a very importantperson to him – probably the most important aside from her mother – and he willdefend her.
Pre 5-5 he has a lot of emotions deep within him – he is sad(canonically, the marks on his face were created from the tears he cried whenhe was in prison that he never wiped away) and angry and fearful. Although he ‘accepts’ his death in theloosest sense of the word, he did not wantto die. It was a sacrifice he wasready to make that went along with his code of honor, but he did not wantdeath. Sometimes I think people forgethow young he actually is – at 28 hewas in prison for seven years and was a day’s away from execution. He looks older because of the stress being inprison put him under and from the secrets he carried, but he is still a youngperson and was ready to sacrifice so many years for his mentor’s daughter. These sorts of sad emotions, though, he was usually very good at keeping hiddenbehind his humor and his ‘twisted samurai’ persona. So I usually use this when I am writing inhis perspective (which is…my usual route when he is around), but I don’t knowif it would be as apparently obvious to others, minus Athena, who knows him bestand can hear his heart’s turmoilwhenever he speaks. I also write that hestill carries a lot of it after 5-5but that is my personal perspective! Hedoes have a lot of relief and is happier after 5-5 and that fear of impendingdeath does not follow him. But to me,that sort of trauma will stay with him. He just, still, does not show it. He is not the type to lean on others. Get them to do his work? Absolutely. But actually lean onthem for emotional help? Not somuch. Even with his sister, he was verystunted in how he expressed his love for her (and vice-versa; neither Blackquillsibling is very good at expressing their emotions).
UH I’m sure I’m missing things but I just realized that thisis already like…1500 words because I just rambled about Simon’s character and Ilove him so much. I DON’T KNOW IF THISWAS HELPFUL because it might just be me rambling, so feel free to send meanother ask or DM or something if you would like more or something morespecific, even!
