Amazon Web Services positions for AI revolution in space
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/amazon-web-services-positions-for-ai-revolution-in-space/
Amazon Web Services positions for AI revolution in space
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is strategically positioning its cloud infrastructure business to capitalize on the transformative potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI) across various industries, including space.
According to Clint Crosier, AWS director of aerospace and satellite, over 60% of the company’s space and aerospace customers are already integrating AI into their operations, a significant increase from single digits just three years ago.
Predicting growth in generative AI
Crosier anticipates similar growth for generative AI in the space sector over the next few years. Generative AI employs deep-learning models to answer questions or create content based on patterns identified in extensive datasets, representing a substantial advancement over traditional machine-learning algorithms.
Crosier told SpaceNews in an interview that mathematical advancements, an explosion of available data, and more affordable, efficient processing chips create a “perfect storm” for the rise of generative AI, driving greater adoption of cloud-based applications.
AWS’s internal reorganization
“In the last year, AWS has fundamentally reorganized itself internally to place the right teams and organizational structure in place so that we can really double down on generative AI,” Crosier said.
AWS has established a “generative AI for space” cell comprising a small team that engages with cloud customers to develop next-generation capabilities. These efforts include a generative AI laboratory where customers can experiment with new uses of these emerging technologies.
Key areas of application
Crosier identifies three primary areas for using generative AI in space: geospatial analytics, spacecraft design, and constellation management. Earth observation satellite operators like BlackSky and Capella Space leverage AI extensively to derive more insights from their geospatial data, although they have not fully embraced generative AI.
In the manufacturing sector, engineers are exploring how generative AI models, informed by design parameters, could produce innovative concepts by drawing on potentially overlooked data from other industries, such as automotive.
“Whether you’re designing a satellite, rocket, or spacecraft, generative AI can explore global data spanning decades and provide novel design concepts for your team to refine,” Crosier said.
Enhancing constellation management
Generative AI also promises to help operators manage increasingly crowded orbits by simulating various testing scenarios.
“If I have a constellation of 600 satellites, generative AI can model numerous scenarios to determine the top 25 cases for optimal design, saving time and money,” Crosier explained.
AWS’s initiatives to accelerate the adoption of emerging computing capabilities include scholarships and a commitment announced in November to provide free AI training to two million people worldwide by the end of 2025.

──────── ⵌ GAME LOADING ...
-> BATMAN X ALTERNATE UNIVERSE! BATMOM
Bruce is transported to an alternate universe where you two were never in love and instead enemies. He can't bare to see what you might have become without him or his sons.
(Bruce slowly removes his cowl, revealing his pained blue eyes staring at you, filled with sorrow and longing.)
BRUCE: "You'd be proud of the men our sons have become."
(You tighten your grip on your sword, the knuckles turning white. For a brief moment, a flicker of something unreadable crosses your face, but you quickly mask it with indifference. You shake your head and raise your blade.)
AU! BATMOM: "They mean nothing in this world."
(With a burst of speed, you launch yourself at him, the clash of metal on metal resonating through the night as your blade meets his defense. The force of your attack drives Bruce back a step, but he holds his ground.)
BRUCE: "In mine, they are everything because of you."
༻⊰───⋅
(A cloud of smoke erupts, obscuring the dimly lit alley as Bruce emerges from the shadows. His cape billows behind him, creating a striking silhouette against the flickering streetlights.)
BRUCE: "Our sons would never recognize you like this."
(You stand still for a moment, the sharp slice of blades cutting through the air as you flip them effortlessly. The sound is a whisper of danger. Your stance is guarded, eyes steely and cold, betraying no emotion.)
AU! BATMOM: "Good. I have no use for children."
(Bruce scowls, the harsh lines on his face deepening. He curls his hand into a fist, muscles tensing visibly under his suit, readying himself for the inevitable confrontation.)
BRUCE: "But every son deserves a mother’s love, no matter the universe."
༻⊰───⋅
(Bruce reaches into his utility belt with practiced ease, pulling out two Batarangs. He holds them firmly, the metal cool and reassuring in his grip)
BRUCE: "I can't look at you without seeing her."
(You lift your chin defiantly, a sharp smile playing on your lips.)
AU! BATMOM: "Ha! I am not your wife."
(Bruce frowns, his eyes narrowing as he shifts his weapons closer to his face, preparing to defend. He refuses to fight you.)
BRUCE: " "But you wear her face, and that’s enough to remind me of what I’ve lost."
༻⊰───⋅
(Bruce maneuvers the Batmobile with precision, stopping abruptly before flipping out and landing on the ground.)
BRUCE: "I see the pain behind your eyes. It's the same pain she hides."
(You huff, striding towards him with purpose. The sword at your hip sings as you draw it, the blade catching the light ominously.)
AU! BATMOM: "Don't presume to know me."
(Bruce stands straighter, his glare unwavering as he meets your gaze head-on.)
BRUCE: "I know her, and that’s why I can’t give up on you."
༻⊰───⋅
(Bruce holds a photo in his hands, a photo of your family. His eyes soften as he looks at it, his grip tender despite the battle raging around him.)
BRUCE: "I dream of bringing her here to show you what you could be."
(Your back is turned against him, but you slowly face his way, the sound of your sword being unsheathed filling the tense silence.)
AU! BATMOM: "Dreams are for the weak."
(Bruce pockets the photo with care, then assumes a combat stance, his eyes never leaving yours.)
BRUCE: "No, they’re for the hopeful. And I will never stop hoping for you."
༻⊰───⋅ (Bruce grunts as your legs tighten around him, choking him. His face contorts with effort as he twists his body, managing to knock you off and get to his feet, breathing heavily.)
BRUCE: "In my world, you're my everything. Here, you're my nightmare."
(You walk off the fall and stand tall, your posture defiant and unwavering. A cold smirk plays on your lips as you step toward him.)
AU! BATMOM: "Dreams and nightmares are two sides of the same coin, Bat."
(Bruce braces himself, legs apart, muscles coiled like a spring, preparing for the inevitable clash.)
Batman: "I just wish I could flip it back."
༻⊰───⋅
-> NIGHTWING X CATGIRL! READER
You've been playing this cat-and-bat chase ever since he was Robin. Now as Nightwing, he can't help but long for something deeper.
(You perch on a rooftop edge, your silhouette lit by the moonlight as you smirk down at him. Leaping from the edge, you flip gracefully through the air before landing in a crouch in front of him.)
CATGIRL: "You know, curiosity killed the cat."
(Dick steps towards you, pulling his escrima sticks from his back. He hits them together, producing a crackle of electricity that illuminates the smirk on his face.)
NIGHTWING: "Good thing satisfaction brought it back."
(Purring, you trail your claws down your chest, your eyes locked on his.)
CATGIRL: "Show me how you satisfy, Nightwing."
༻⊰───⋅
(Dick whistles as he walks towards you in his police uniform, swinging handcuffs with his fingers. The polished badge on his chest glints under the bank’s dim lights.)
OFFICER! GRAYSON: "Why don't you switch sides? You'd make a great hero."
(You laugh and stalk towards him, not even bothering to avoid the tripwires in the bank. The alarms remain silent, disabled by your expert touch.)
CATGIRL: "A kitty in a cape? Not my style."
(Dick shakes his head, a hint of a smile playing on his lips as he unlatches the handcuffs, the metal clinking softly.)
OFFICER! GRAYSON: "You could do so much good, you know."
༻⊰───⋅
(Laughing, you knock Dick to the ground, but with a swift move, he rolls you over, tackling you to the side and straddling you with a grin.)
NIGHTWING: "I know all your weak spots."
(You feel the heat of his body against yours, but you twist from his grip, slipping out and flipping away to a safe distance. You land lightly on your feet, drawing your claws with a predatory smile.)
CATGIRL: "You think you can make me purr?"
(Dick smirks, his eyes glinting with challenge. He rolls his shoulders, the muscles rippling under his suit, and tosses his head back.)
NIGHTWING: "I’ll have you screaming my name."
༻⊰───⋅
(Dick watches as you strut along the edge of a building, hips swaying with each step, your balance effortless. )
NIGHTWING: "You know, Blüdhaven could use someone like you."
(You toss your head back with a playful smile, bending before executing a flawless flip towards him, landing gracefully.)
CATGIRL: "What, their own version of Catwoman?"
(Dick’s expression softens, the playful smile fading from his face, replaced by a more earnest look. He steps towards you and twirls his escrima sticks in the air.)
NIGHTWING: "No. Another hero."
༻⊰───⋅
(You flip yourself over a rooftop edge, your hair falling in loose waves as you look down at Nightwing's panting form from above.)
CATGIRL: "What's the matter, Nightwing? Can't handle a little cat-and-bat chase?"
(Dick grins and throws his head back to look up at you, exposing the strong line of his jaw. Beads of sweat trickle down his face and neck, glistening in the moonlight. With a slow motion, he tucks his batons back into his back.)
NIGHTWING: "Oh. I can handle a lot more than that."
(Smirking, you slip off the rooftop and land right in front of him with a thud. You purr as you step closer, lashing your whip around you.)
CATGIRL: "Prove it, and I might let you handle me."
༻⊰───⋅
(Snarling, Dick licks at the stripe of blood running over his lip. You saunter a few feet away, licking your canines, which are stained with his blood.)
NIGHTWING: "You know, we could stop all this fighting."
(You smirk and draw your claws, eyes narrowing into slits.)
CATGIRL: "And what would we do instead, loverboy?"
(Dick smirks and crosses his arms, giving you a tantalizing view of his biceps, the fabric of his suit straining slightly.)
NIGHTWING: "I have a few ideas. None of them involve clothes."
༻⊰───⋅
(Dick speeds through the city on his motorcycle, the engine roaring beneath him. With a swift, fluid motion, he flips off the bike, landing perfectly on his feet. The bike crashes in the distance, a burst of sparks lighting up.)
NIGHTWING: "You keep running, but I’ll always catch you."
(You turn to face him, a sharp smile playing on your lips, a shiny new jewel glinting in your hand under the moonlight.)
CATGIRL: "Maybe I just like the chase."
(Dick rolls his eyes, a mix of exasperation and amusement crossing his face, before he drops into a fighting stance, tensed and ready.)
NIGHTWING: "How about we skip to the part where I pin you down?"
༻⊰───⋅
(The jail cell door clanks shut as Dick locks you inside. You coo at him, reaching out to cup his cheek, but he knocks your hand away, his eyes filled with anger.)
NIGHTWING: "Every time you run, it feels like you’re slipping away from me."
(You frown and move away, slipping back into the shadows of the cell, the dim light casting eerie patterns on your figure.)
CATGIRL: "Running is all I know."
(Dick frowns, his hand tightening on the cold metal bars. His voice is filled with a deep, aching sincerity as he gazes into the darkness where you stand.)
NIGHTWING: "I just wish you'd run towards me instead."
༻⊰───⋅
-> REDHOOD X AMAZON! READER
Wonder Woman's daughter, once a proud heroine, now an outcast from the League after you killed the Joker in a vengeful rage for your lover's death. You try to run, he doesn't let you.
(With a fierce cry, you bring your sword down in a powerful arc, slicing through your enemies. Blood sprays as you cut down your chasers, the ground beneath you becoming slick with the crimson evidence of your wrath. You turn around just in time to see Jason charging towards you.)
A: "Cease this. The League will hunt me down like an animal."
(Jason scowls, his expression dark as he cocks his guns and reloads his rubber bullets. He barrels into the fray, firing relentlessly and mowing down the wave of heroes coming after you.)
JASON: "They won’t touch you as long as I’m breathing."
(You spin, delivering a bone-crushing blow to an opponent's jaw, feeling the satisfying crunch of bone beneath your knuckles.)
A: "You can’t fight the whole League, my love! I’m a liability."
༻⊰───⋅
(Jason frowns and reaches for your wrist, pulling you back into his arms. The battle still thrums in the air around you, but in this moment, it's just the two of you.)
JASON: "Don’t let B’s opinion define you."
(You knock him away with a fierce shove, drawing your shield up defensively. Your sword hangs by your side, stained with the blood of your enemies, the weight of it a reminder of your actions.)
A: "He’s your father. His scorn is a heavy burden to bear."
(Jason steps forward, dropping his guns. He cups your face in his hands, forcing you to look at him, his touch both gentle and firm.)
JASON: "To hell with what he thinks. I love you, and that’s what matters."
༻⊰───⋅
(The two of you circle each other, eyes locked in their own battle. Jason's guns are pointed at you, his face twisted in agony.)
JASON: "I hate that your hands are bloodied for my sake."
(You drop your shield and sword, the clatter of metal echoing in the tense silence. Raising your stained hands, you step closer, showing him the blood that marks your skin.)
A: "I’d stain them a thousand times for you."
(Jason's eyes flicker with pain and frustration as he lowers his guns.)
JASON: "And I wanted to keep them clean."
༻⊰───⋅
(With a growl, you swing your sword at Jason, the blade whistling through the air. He ducks, rolling to the side and coming up with his guns aimed at you. You charge forward, deflecting his shots with your shield.)
JASON: "You think running away will solve anything?"
(You catch his leg with your shield, throwing him off balance before punching him in the jaw.)
A: "You don’t understand the price I’ve paid!"
(Jason wipes the blood from his lip, eyes flashing with anger and sorrow as he lunges at you.)
JASON:"I understand more than you think! And I’m here to help you!"
༻⊰───⋅
(You stand at the edge of a cliff, the wind whipping through your hair as you face Jason. Swinging your sword, you knock it against your shield, the clang echoing in the open air.)
A: "You think you’re man enough to stop me?"
(Jason scoffs as you lunge at him. He blocks your hit, twisting your arm behind your back and pulling you close.)
JASON: "I’ve got the scars to prove it."
(You twist out of his grip, using your strength to knock him to his back. You pick your shield back up, foot moving to press down on him.)
A: "Show me those scars up close."
༻⊰───⋅
(You scream as you're thrown back with his kick, your back slamming into the wall. Gasping for breath, you watch as Jason reaches for your shield, which had been knocked away during the fight. He picks it up and walks over to you, dropping it to your feet.)
JASON: "They say love makes you do crazy things."
(You take the shield from him, your breath still heavy from the exertion. You stand tall, despite the pain coursing through your body.)
A: "Like taking a life for the one you love?"
(Jason's gaze intensifies, and he steps closer.)
JASON: "Like risking your heart for a broken soul like mine."

RED ROBIN X IVY! READER
Poison Ivy's protégé, you and Tim couldn't be more different. He thrives on technology and his man-made gadgets, while you draw your strength from the untamed power of the green.
(A large vine from above dips down, its lush, green leaves swaying gently as you perch on it. Your eyes sparkle with mischief as you look down at Tim.)
IVY: "You think you can handle all this greenery, techie?"
(Tim smirks, twirling a small device in his hand. With a flick of his wrist, the device emits a pulse, causing the vine to tremble and wither.)
R! ROBIN: "I’ve got a green thumb, but I'd rather get my hands on you."
(You slide down the vine, landing gracefully in front of him, your eyes narrowing. You summon a thick vine to wrap around his legs, but Tim's quick reflexes kick in as he flips over it, landing in a crouch.)
IVY: "Hm. Only if you promise to get dirty."
༻⊰───⋅
(Tim steps closer, his expression softening as he activates his bo staff, the weapon extending with a mechanical whir. He swings it in a wide arc, deflecting the thorny vines you hurl at him.)
R! ROBIN: "You're not like her, you know."
(You scoff, crossing your arms as a cluster of flowers bloom at your feet. You raise your hand, sending a barrage of petals sharp as knives his way. Tim deftly spins his staff, creating a shield.)
IVY: "Who, Ivy? Maybe not yet."
(Tim's eyes soften, his grip on the staff loosening slightly as he steps closer.)
R! ROBIN: "And you don't have to be."
༻⊰───⋅
(You pace around him, a vine curling up from the ground and snaking towards his feet. Tim notices and sidesteps, slashing at the vine with his staff.)
IVY: "Ever think about leaving the Bat?"
(Tim frowns, his bo staff sweeping down to cut the vine before it can ensnare him.)
R! ROBIN: "Ever think about leaving Ivy?"
(You grin, a sly smile playing on your lips as you summon a wall of thorns behind him. He leaps backward, landing nimbly on top of the thorns, balancing effortlessly.)
IVY: "Touché."
༻⊰───⋅
(Tim looks around at the flourishing plants, his staff humming with energy as he uses his tech to scan for weaknesses in your creations.)
R! ROBIN: "I see you've been busy with your plants again."
(You gently caress a leaf, your voice soft as a tendril wraps around his ankle. He quickly discharges an electric shock from his staff, causing the tendril to release him.)
IVY: "They listen better than people do."
(Tim's staff whirls, cutting through the tendril effortlessly as he advances.)
R! ROBIN: "Maybe you just need the right person to listen."
༻⊰───⋅
(Tim steps closer, his voice dropping to a whisper as he disarms a trap you set with a quick twist of his wrist. He flips over another set of vines you send his way, landing in a crouch.)
R! ROBIN: "Your touch brings life to these plants."
(You raise an eyebrow, intrigued as flowers bloom around you. You step down from your vine and saunter toward him.)
IVY: "Imagine what it could do to you."
(Tim smiles, a challenge in his eyes as he deactivates his staff, stepping closer.)
R! ROBIN: "I’m willing to find out."
༻⊰───⋅
(Tim walks towards you, engrossed with the device on his wrist, tapping on the holographic table that hovers above it.)
IVY: "What’s a techie like you doing in a place like this?"
(Your voice coos at him as you emerge from the ground, vines whipping all around you. Tim smirks and turns his attention back to you, the holograph shutting off.)
R! ROBIN: "Looking for a beautiful flower to pick."
(You smirk, your vines thriving in the light as you swipe at him, narrowly missing. He ducks and rolls, coming up with a blade ready. Scoffing, you trace a hand up your neck, your eyes narrowing with playful menace.)
IVY: "Just make sure you can handle the thorns."
༻⊰───⋅
(Tim reaches out, brushing his fingers against a blossom, his staff ready at his side as he keeps an eye on you.)
R! ROBIN: "We could build something beautiful together."
(You shake your head, a hint of sadness in your voice as you create a protective barrier of foliage around yourself. Tim uses his tech to create a small opening, stepping through it.)
IVY: "Beautiful things always wither and die."
(Tim takes your hand, squeezing it gently as he deactivates his staff, the barrier of foliage parting around you. He pulls you closer, his voice soft and earnest.)
R! ROBIN: "Not if we tend to them with care."

-> DAMIAN X L.O.A! READER
Arranged to marry since birth by Talia, Damian had promised to be yours for life. However, after his betrayal of the League, he left you behind. You were labeled as a co-conspirator, and as punishment for his treason, you were blinded.
(Blades glint under the dim light as you twirl your fan, the air around you whistling with its sharp edges. Damian stands a few feet away, his katana ready in his hand, emerald eyes fixed on you.)
DAMIAN: "Has my mother sent you?"
(You laugh and throw your head back in disbelief. The cloth wrapped around your eye flows in the wind. Raising a hand, you slip it off and show him your empty eyes.)
L.O.U: "Do I look like her pawn? Do you not see what she has done to me? This is my kill, not hers."
(Damian's eyes narrow, his stance shifting as he prepares to engage. )
DAMIAN: "Then why do you hesitate?"
༻⊰───⋅
(You feel the rush of air as Damian's katana swings towards you. Instinctively, you duck and counter with a sweeping arc of your fan, sensing his presence.)
L.O.U: "You walked away from everything."
(Damian's footsteps echo as he moves swiftly, his voice carrying a note of deep regret.)
DAMIAN: "Only to realize everything is you, habibti."
(You pivot on your heel, using your heightened senses to track his position, your fan poised to strike again.)
L.O.U: "Fool! You think words can mend this?!"
༻⊰───⋅
(The sound of his breath and the shuffle of his feet guide you as you launch a series of rapid strikes. Damian blocks each one, his katana creating a rhythmic pattern against your fan. Finally, he pushes his blade against yours, locking it between his fist.)
DAMIAN: "Beloved, losing your sight... I did not know my mother... I cannot even imagine—"
(You lash out with your fan, the blades narrowly missing Damian’s face as he parries with his katana. You both step back, circling each other, the tension between you palpable.)
L.O.U: "I do not need your pity, bastard!"
(Damian's eyes harden, but his voice remains soft.)
DAMIAN: "Not pity. Guilt. And a desperate need to make things right."
༻⊰───⋅
(You leap forward, your fan spinning with deadly precision. Damian blocks the first strike but then purposefully drops his katana, stepping into your range. You scoff, surprised, as he grabs your wrist and forces you to drop your fan.)
L.O.U: "You think your guilt means anything to me?"
(Damian's movements falter for a brief moment, his voice raw with emotion. You kick and scream against his chest so hard he felt as though there would be bruises but he could care less.)
DAMIAN: "It tears me apart every day."
(You pull back, freeing your wrist and shifting into a defensive stance, your voice dripping with bitterness.)
L.O.U: "Good. Now you know a fraction of my pain."
༻⊰───⋅
(Without your weapons, you both engage in a flurry of hand-to-hand combat. Damian blocks your strikes, deflecting your blows with minimal force, showing his reluctance to hurt you.)
DAMIAN: "Our marriage was more than a strategy to me."
(You laugh, a harsh sound, as you aim a kick at his midsection. He catches your leg and gently sets it down.)
L.O.U: "Yes. It was a lie."
(With a scream of anger, you tackle him, but he twists mid-fall, using his momentum to pin you to the ground. You struggle beneath him but he leans closer, his breath warm against your ear.)
DAMIAN: "No, it was the most real thing I've known."
༻⊰───⋅
(Wind whirls as you scream and hurl your fans in his direction. The blades spin through the air, nearly striking him, but he dodges with a series of agile flips. Laughing haughtily, you reach for your dagger in your belt.) L.O.U: "What do you desire, Habibi?"
(You advance on him, your steps swift and deliberate, knives dancing between your fingers. You hear a thud as Damian lands back on his feet with a grunt.) DAMIAN: "You. Only you."
(You scoff and fling another fan at him. He sidesteps and deflects it with his katana, the blade slicing through the air with a sharp hiss. Undeterred, you rush forward, using your heightened senses to anticipate his next move. Your fan blades clash against his katana in a shower of sparks.) L.O.U: "Then come and claim me."
༻⊰───⋅
(You sit on a stone bench in the garden of his new home. Wayne Manor, he had said. The night air was cool against your skin. Footsteps echo as Damian approaches, his katana sheathed at his side. He sits beside you, his gaze filled with longing.)
DAMIAN: "I dreamt of you every night."
(You scoff and trace the edge of your fan, the blades cool under your fingers.)
L.O.U: "Did you dream of my pain as well?"
(Damian’s expression turns into anguish, his hand reaching out to cover yours. A thumb moves to caress the metal band on your finger.)
DAMIAN: "Yes, and it’s unbearable."

Stormy Hearts
Synopsis: Amidst a stormy night, a chance encounter with a lost dog sparks a heartwarming tale of rescue, reunion, and unexpected love between two compassionate souls.
Word count:2.4K
This was requested by anonymous so I hope I did good
Let me know if you guys have any requests for the girls :)
The air was thick with humidity, a sure sign that the brewing storm would soon unleash its fury. You glanced out the window of the animal shelter, watching the dark clouds roll in. It had been a long day of caring for injured and abandoned animals, but the satisfaction of seeing them nursed back to health made every effort worthwhile.
"Alright, everyone," you called to the small team of volunteers. "Let's make sure all the animals are settled for the night. It looks like we’re in for a rough storm."
As the last of the animals were secured and the shelter doors locked, you grabbed your coat and braced yourself for the downpour. The drive home was going to be treacherous, with the streets already slick from the intermittent rain that had begun to fall. You navigated your car carefully through the winding roads, the windshield wipers working overtime.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a small figure darted across the road. Your heart leapt into your throat as you slammed on the brakes, the car skidding slightly before coming to a stop. You peered through the rain-splattered windshield and saw a drenched dog standing in the middle of the road, shivering and looking terrified.
"Oh my God," you muttered, quickly turning on your hazard lights and stepping out of the car. You approached the dog slowly, your voice gentle. "Hey there, buddy. It’s okay. I’m not going to hurt you."
The dog, a small Jack Russell Terrier by the looks of it, seemed hesitant but didn’t run. After a few tense moments, you managed to coax the dog into your arms and carried him back to the car. You wrapped him in a blanket you kept in the back seat, feeling the poor thing tremble against you.
"Looks like you’re coming home with me tonight," you said softly, hoping your voice was as reassuring as you intended it to be.
Back at her cozy apartment, you dried the dog off and examined him more closely. He didn’t seem injured, just scared and exhausted. You set him up with a warm bed and some food, watching as he slowly began to relax in the unfamiliar surroundings.
“You’re safe now,” you whispered, gently petting the dog’s head. “We’ll figure this out.”
— — — — — — —
Rosé stepped off the plane, her legs weary from the long flight. She had spent the past three weeks in the Amazon rainforest, capturing breathtaking images of wildlife for her latest project. While the experience had been exhilarating, she couldn’t wait to get home to her beloved dog, Hank. The thought of his excited barks and wagging tail always made her smile.
As she drove through the familiar streets of her neighborhood, a sense of unease began to creep in. Something felt off. When she finally pulled into her driveway and opened the front door, the silence that greeted her was deafening.
“Hank?” she called out, her voice echoing through the empty house. There was no response. Panic surged through her as she checked every room, but Hank was nowhere to be found. His bed was empty, his toys untouched.
Frantically, she rushed outside, calling his name as she searched the yard and the surrounding streets. Her neighbors hadn’t seen him either, and with each passing moment, her fear grew. She returned home and grabbed her phone, dialing the number of the local animal shelters and veterinary clinics.
“Hi, this is Roseanne Park. I’m looking for my dog, Hank. He’s a Jack Russell Terrier, and he’s been missing since...I don’t know exactly when. I’ve been away on assignment. Have you seen him?”
Each call brought the same disheartening response: no one had seen Hank. Rosé felt a lump form in her throat as she sat down, tears welling in her eyes. She couldn’t lose him. Hank was more than just a pet; he was her family, her constant companion.
Determined not to give up, she printed out flyers with Hank’s picture and started posting them around the neighborhood. She shared his photo on social media, hoping that someone, anyone, might have seen him. The days passed in a blur of worry and exhaustion, each one harder than the last without her furry friend by her side.
— — — — — — —
Meanwhile, back at your apartment, the little dog was beginning to come out of his shell. You had taken him to the vet to check for a microchip, but there was none. You posted pictures and descriptions of him on various lost-and-found pet websites, hoping his owner would come forward.
Days turned into a week, and still, there was no word. The dog, whom you had started calling Max, seemed to be adjusting well. He followed her around the apartment, his once wary eyes now filled with trust and affection. Each evening, they’d curl up on the couch together, a comforting routine that had quickly become the highlight of your day.
“You’re such a good boy, Max,” you said one night, scratching behind his ears. “I can’t believe no one’s come looking for you. But don’t worry, we’ll keep trying.”
As you sat there, watching Max drift off to sleep, you couldn’t help but think about the owner who must be missing him terribly. You knew what it was like to love an animal deeply, and the thought of someone out there worrying about Max broke your heart.
— — — — — — —
One afternoon, as Rosé was putting up yet another flyer, her phone buzzed with a notification. She opened it to see a post from a local lost-and-found pets group. The description matched Hank’s perfectly: a Jack Russell Terrier found on a stormy night, currently being cared for by a veterinarian.
Rosé’s heart raced as she dialed the number listed in the post. After a few rings, a warm voice answered.
“Hello, this is Y/n.”
“Hi, my name is Rosé. I think you might have my dog. He’s a Jack Russell Terrier, and he went missing while I was away. I saw your post and...I think it’s him.”
There was a moment of silence on the other end before you replied, your voice tinged with relief. “Oh, thank goodness. I’ve been hoping someone would come forward. He’s been with me for a week now, and he’s such a sweet dog. Can you meet me at the park near the shelter? I’ll bring him with me.”
Rosé agreed, her hands trembling with a mix of hope and anxiety. She couldn’t wait to see Hank again, to hold him and know he was safe. She grabbed her keys and headed out the door, her mind racing with thoughts of their reunion.
— — — — — — —
The park was a serene oasis amidst the bustling city, its lush greenery and peaceful atmosphere a stark contrast to the turmoil Rosé felt inside. She scanned the area, her eyes finally landing on a woman standing near a bench, holding a small dog in her arms.
“Hank!” Rosé called out, her voice breaking with emotion.
The dog’s head snapped up, and he wriggled out of your arms, racing towards Rosé with all the speed his little legs could muster. Rosé dropped to her knees, scooping him up and holding him close as tears streamed down her face.
“Oh, Hank, I missed you so much,” she whispered, burying her face in his fur. “I was so scared I’d lost you forever.”
You watched the reunion with a smile, your heart swelling with happiness. You approached slowly, not wanting to intrude on the moment.
“Hi,” you said softly. “I’m Y/n. I’m so glad we found you.”
Rosé looked up, her eyes red but filled with gratitude. “Thank you so much. I can’t believe he’s really here.”
You smiled, feeling a warm connection with Rosé. “He’s been a joy to have around. I’m just glad he’s back where he belongs.”
They spent the next few moments exchanging details about Hank’s adventures, with Rosé expressing her heartfelt thanks over and over again. As the conversation flowed, you felt an unexpected but welcome bond forming with Rosé.
“Would you like to grab a coffee or something?” You suggested, hoping to extend both of your time together.
Rosé hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “I’d like that. There’s a café nearby that’s pet-friendly. We can take Hank.”
— — — — — — —
Over coffee, you and Rosé began to learn more about each other. You shared stories from the animal shelter, tales of the animals you helped, and the challenges they faced. Rosé listened intently, her eyes lighting up with interest and empathy.
“You really love what you do,” Rosé said, admiration clear in her voice.
You nodded. “I do. It’s not always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding.”
Rosé then spoke about her photography, her travels, and the wild places she had visited. She described the thrill of capturing a perfect moment in nature and the peace she found in the wilderness.
“I think that’s why Hank and I get along so well,” Rosé said, smiling as she looked at her dog. “We’re both explorers at heart.”
You chuckled. “I can see that. He’s quite the adventurer.”
As you both talked, the initial awkwardness faded, replaced by a comfortable and easy rapport. You both discovered common interests and shared values, from your love of animals to the desire to make a positive impact on the world.
The chemistry between you both was undeniable, but both you and Rosé were cautious. You both had each been hurt in the past and were wary of rushing into anything. But as the days turned into weeks, the friendship deepened, and began spending more time together.
— — — — — — —
Navigating the challenges of Rosé reclaiming Hank wasn’t without its difficulties. Hank had grown attached to you, and there were moments when he seemed torn between the two women.
One evening, as you all sat together in Rosé’s living room, Hank lay contentedly between you both . Rosé looked at you, her eyes softening.
“You know, I’ve never seen him this happy before,” Rosé admitted. “He’s always been a bit anxious, but with you, he seems so calm.”
You smiled, feeling a warmth spread through your chest. “I think he’s just happy to have so much love around him.”
Rosé reached out, taking your hand. “I’m really glad we met, Y/n. You’ve brought something special into our lives.”
You squeezed Rosé’s hand gently. “I feel the same way. You and Hank...you’ve both brought something special into mine too.”
You sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the connection between you two growing stronger. But with that connection came the inevitable question of what your relationship would become.
As you guys continued to spend time together, you and Rosé began to explore your feelings more openly. There were shared glances, lingering touches, and moments of unspoken understanding that hinted at something deeper.
One day, while walking Hank in the park, Rosé turned to you with a thoughtful expression. “You know, I’ve been thinking a lot about us.”
Your heart skipped a beat. “Oh? What about us?”
Rosé took a deep breath, her eyes locking onto yours. “I care about you, Y/n. More than just as a friend. I don’t want to rush things, but I think...I think there’s something really special here. And I want to see where it could go.”
You felt a surge of emotion. “I care about you too, Rosie. I’ve been feeling the same way, but I wasn’t sure if you did.”
Rosé smiled, her relief evident. “I guess we’ve both been a little cautious, huh?”
You nodded. “Yeah, but maybe it’s time to stop being so cautious.”
The conversation marked a turning point in this relationship. You and Rosé began to explore the feelings more openly, allowing the connection to deepen naturally. You both went on more dates, spent weekends together, and shared your lives in a way that felt genuine and unforced.
— — — — — — —
One evening, as you both sat on Rosé’s balcony watching the sunset, you turned to Rosé, your heart pounding with anticipation. “Rosie, there’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now.”
Rosé looked at you, curiosity and affection in her eyes. “What is it?”
You leaned in slowly, giving Rosé time to react. When Rosé didn’t pull away, you closed the distance between you two , your lips brushing against Rosé’s in a tentative, tender kiss.
Rosé responded immediately, her hand coming up to cup your cheek as she deepened the kiss. The world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of you and the warmth of your embrace. The kiss grew more passionate, your connection undeniable as you both poured feelings into that single, electrifying moment.
When you finally pulled apart, both were breathless, your foreheads resting against each other. You smiled, your heart feeling lighter than it had in a long time.
“I’ve been wanting to do that for so long,” you admitted.
Rosé laughed softly, her eyes sparkling with joy. “Me too. It was worth the wait.”
You both spent the rest of the evening wrapped in each other’s arms, sharing whispered confessions and dreams for the future. As the stars began to twinkle above, you and Rosé knew that this was the beginning of something beautiful.
Your relationship continued to grow, filled with love, laughter, and the occasional challenge. But through it all, You and Rosé faced everything together, the bond strengthening with each passing day.
As you both stood on the balcony one evening, watching another sunset, you turned to Rosé, your eyes filled with love and determination.
“You know, Rosie, I never imagined finding someone who understands me the way you do. I’m so grateful for every moment we’ve shared.”
Rosé smiled, her heart swelling with happiness. “I feel the same way, Y/n. You’ve brought so much joy into my life. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.”
You leaned in, capturing Rosé’s lips in a kiss that was both tender and passionate, a promise of all the adventures yet to come. And as you held each other close, you both knew that this love story was just beginning, a journey filled with endless possibilities and a love that would endure through any storm.

In Canada, I was raised from birth to be a warrior. My ancestors clashed in battle after battle, drawing blood to retrieve the best deals on home electronics and occasionally near-expiry panettone. Like my grandfather said on the first day he put a charge card in my hand, I was born to win at Boxing Day.
Perhaps you live in a country that does not have Boxing Day, or maybe you call it something else. If this is the case, I would like you to imagine going to the stores and finding a good discount. Traditionally, before the Americans came with their blackened Fridays and good-deal Aprils, going into combat on this day is how we would be able to afford a six-CD changer.
It was always the same sequence. Get up at the crack of dawn with the surviving family members. Drive to the asshole end of the city, after determining which of the stores are likely to have the least attendance and competition for the deal you want. Wait in line in the December morn for more than an hour, eyeing anyone who tries to cut in line. The doors open. There is blood. So much blood. And then, maybe if you were pure of heart and fleet of foot, a deal.
Things have changed now. The internet came from the heavens. The clouds above us sing of algorithmically determined deals that are determined computationally to be the exact discount that will trigger us to buy. 19% off? We scoff. 18.35% off with a free cookie? Some part of our protosimian neurological architecture jams its foot on the gas pedal and won't let go until we've destroyed one entire Bank of Montreal Platinum Reserve® Optimax® MasterCard® in exchange for something we don't need that might arrive at our home late next week by a hungover Purolator employee. There is no honour in this.
Which is why we're going to try out a new thing this year. The mall near us has been empty for decades, except for a short period of time where the CBC filmed a docudrama set in the 1990s there. What we're gonna do is set a bunch of Amazon gift cards down on the floor and let some folks my age kick the absolute shit out of each other in exchange for a chance to buy them for greater than the listed face value. It's gonna be just like the old days. I hope to see you there.

A writer’s guide to forests: from the poles to the tropics, part 8
We’ve made it to the tropics. I hope you enjoyed this, and found it useful in your writing.
Tropical rainforest
Probably the most recognizable of forest environment, and among the most threatened.
Location-Latin America, Africa, Australia, Indonesia, and the Pacific islands in between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Many forests have been felled or heavily altered by human activity.
Climate-Subtropical to tropical, with conditions being wet year round. Rain does not fall all the time, with a defined rainy and dry season. (What’s the difference? Rainy season has rain almost daily while in the dry season you will have to make do with high humidity and morning fog) At higher elevations, nights are cooler, though still well above freezing, and mist and rain are more common(this is why mountainous RF are called cloud forests)
Plant life- This is a tree dominated environment. The understory and forest floor are dark, unless trees have recently fallen. Many small plants are arboreal, nestled in the upper branches of trees. Vines and other climbers use larger plants as scaffolding. In areas of poor soil, tropical pitcher plants (Nepenthes spp.) and bladderworts (Utricularia spp.) get much needed nutrients from animal sources.
Animal life- Rainforests are the most biodiverse environments on Earth. Insects are everywhere, as are the animals that eat them. Birds and primates can be found from the canopy to the forest floor. The moist conditions make for an ideal habitat for frogs and toads. Apex predators are the big cats-think jaguars, tigers and leopards. Some species of herbivores can be quite large; Africa is home to gorillas and forest elephants, while the island of Borneo, Sumatra, and Java support rhinos and orangutans (though the further of these species is uncertain)Waterways are home to all sorts of fish(there are more species in the Amazon river than in the Atlantic Ocean), and larger animals, such as otters, crocodilians, and even river dolphins. Isolated islands have far fewer mammal species, with bats being the only ones, but hardy insects, reptiles, and birds making up the majority of the biomass. Deforestation and the introduction of invasive species have caused the extinction of many animal species, with island forests being the hardest hit.
How the forest affects the story- When one thinks of societies in the tropics, it usually is through the lens of western stereotypes designed to shock audiences and give ‘civilization’ something to conquer. Avoid this at all cost! There is more to the forest. Before the Spanish conquest, the Amazon was home to cities, and the agricultural societies of New Guinea are believed to be contemporaries with the farmers of Mesopotamia.
Grain does not do well in the tropics, so farming will be based around plants such as açaí, coconuts, taro, breadfruit, bananas, and manioc. These can be supplemented by hunting and fishing, but long term storage will have to be addressed. High humidity is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, so organic material will have to be kept dry so they don’t rot. The concentration of microorganisms also means that good hygiene is needed to avoid disease.
Settlement will always cause disruption, and the extent of your character’s activities can have a big impact on the forest, and your story. And remember, the activity of a small village will be different to that of large scale logging. Management, use, and abuse of the rainforest can be a driving factor in the plot. How will your characters react? Is the threat from outside or from within? The destruction of the rainforest is one of the main factors, along with unmitigated greenhouse gas emissions that is causing the current climate crisis. Can your characters do better? Or will you create a cautionary tale that shows us the grim future we are currently barreling towards? (That choice, my dear writers, is completely up to you)

I know i’ve mentioned this before but dear god please let yourself not only get used to but embrace being inconvenienced. The commodification of convenience and having everything at our fingertips at all times, delivered straight to our doors, is destroying our mental health and sense of community.
During the pandemic there were a few food places near me that were now only open certain days of the week, and this actually stayed the case post-lockdown and into the current day. I know in that case it probably meant struggling business and furloughs, but the fact is slowly I saw more businesses limiting their hours and this made me ecstatic. Like. Yes girl close on Saturdays or Sundays. YES GIRL let your employees sleep!!!
Restaurants that close in the middle of the day and reopen in the evenings. Shops that ONLY do in-store pick up, no delivery. Not picking overnight delivery on Amazon. Driving to a physical store to go shop for a new computer or laptop so you can see it and leave with it already in your hands. Yes these things take more time and effort but like. When I have to take quarters to go do my laundry in my building’s laundry room because I don’t have an in-unit washer/dryer, it gets me up and moving. I see people in the elevator. Someone says hi to me while I’m loading my laundry in. We talk briefly. When the corner store next to me is closed by 6pm on Saturday I either have to plan to go there early, or walk down to the other grocery store a few blocks away. On my walk, I see the beautiful clouds and trees and all the other people going about their day. I see that I am in something, that I am a part of something. If it rains on that walk, I get the very human joy of experiencing being inconvenienced by the very real weather of this planet that we’ve been both blessed and inconvenienced by since the beginning of time. I’m not only part of a community, but an ecosystem. A living environment in conversation with the rest of us throughout history. And that means something. It helps remind me how nice it is to be here. How nice it is to see and care for the people around me, even if it’s just passing by. The ways in which I am fortunate, and the ways in which I am not.
There is of course a seperate conversation to be had about how capitalism has forced a lot of people into needing to take jobs from businesses open 24/7, some people live in remote, unwalkable locations and dont have access to these things in the same way, and of course grocery delivery and other convenient services have done a ton to help the sick and disabled, but please. I encourage you. If you have the means to be inconvenienced in any way, please do so.

I get the feeling Jack and Castiel's redone heaven is a very different thing, besides no walls...
Like, it gives you thing's you want right?
So Dean of course wants Sam so even though it didn't seem like a long drive at a simple bridge stop, Sam's there.
Cas and Dean meet up soon after as well. It's not totally clear what happens between them, but they are running bar together shortly after and have their own house. It's odder when Benny, who was pretty sure he was morosely wandering Purgatory, a tiny amazon child in tow, then their walking out of the endless woods and come upon a bar. Dean's smile is radiant when he see's Benny, and so many things when he see's little Emma. In short order Benny has a spot behind the bar beside Dean while Castiel entertain's Emma with colorful drink parasols. (Jack show's up because he wishes to meet one of his siblings.)
Dean is somehow not surprised when Sam show's up with (he mocks delightedly) a vertaible harem. Madison apparently knows asl a bit and she and Eileen haven't stopped signing yet (Castiel joins in) Jess and Sam keeping giving eachother goopy eyes while Amy and Gabriel chat verbally. (Sam admits he already got to see Sarah, but that obvoiously her husband and daughter are with her.) Dean wonders if it's very selfish of him to be glad Sam's Amelia is nowhere to be seen.
Amy never speaks to him or acknowledges his existance. He accepts that as his jus deserts.
He isn't upset, like he thought he might be when Hannah comes in. (He does make a face at Balthazar but Bathazar makes a face right back so he thinks that's cool)
Jimmy and Amelia show up, and Cas, Sam, and Dean are happy to regale the two of all they know of Claire's life and accomplishments. Sam being the most recently dead knows the most. He and Jimmy get especially soppy over memories (and pictures) of Claire and Kaia's wedding.
Time probably passes. Dean, Benny, Cas, Balthazar and Hannah, little Emma in tow go home and return. They go on walks and drives. Sometimes he and Sam get together for a "just us drive". Sometimes Adam comes with. It's...slow going, but Dean and Sam try and Adam tries...Adam becomes much, much happier when a morose and apologetic Michael shows up. Dean figures he can't throw stones about ones eternal partner...(but he really wants to) (granted he also wishes Gabriel would stop with the eyebrows. He doesn't care if Sam is technically and old man...that is his baby brother why are those eyebrows waggling!) (Lenore who has also come by, her own bar coming into being directly across the street from Dean's, does the same thing. Sam looks delighted and helpess at all his loves. Lenore is a love he didn't even ever consider...but she's hear now and Dean whines because he was the brother with the vampire significant other...Sam's just copying him...) (This doesn't stop him from teaming up with the former trickster for an epic prank war.)
Henricksen makes his way to the bar. Along with sweet Nancy. Dean actually squeaks a bit when Benny gestures her behind the bar. He thinks he feels something like twelve with his first crush with her. It's something so very new and he thinks he likes it. Henricksen "I think you can call me Victor these days" drops by every now and then. He's on Dean's team for the prank war. (Nancy and Hannah get along great)
Dean, Sam (and Adam once he's introduced) are giddy when Henry Winchester arrives.
The real Meg Masters comes in at one point. Sam and Dean thank her again for trying with her last breaths to help them, she tries to aplogize for her angry ghost self but gives up with a happy laugh when they stick their fingers in their ears and sing until she stops. She has nothing to ever apologize for.
John and Mary come in...things are strained between them all. A lot of hurt...a lot of disappointment clouds their interactions. Emma tries to bite John's ankle.
Ash opts to live part time and the roadhouse and part time at Dean's bar, which mysteriously named itself Thursday's Child at some point. Dean also obediently goes to visit the roadhouse at Ellen and Jo's demand. Jo never work's at Dean's bar...but she does eventually make her way home with him and the rest. (Sam points out that he can't mock his number of significant other's anymore.)
Andy Gallagher, when he shows up, shepherding a scowly blonde goth girl and a sweet looking girl in front of him, zeroes in on Sam. He becomes Lenore's bar's resident "guy who sleeps on tables" but often follows Sam home. Lily (who made Sam look like he wanted to cry until the girl awkwardly kicked his shin and told him he tried and it wasn't his fault) and her girlsfriend mostly hang out at Lenore's when they pass through.
One person who goes to Sam's house, not the bar is Barry, the boy Sam had been friends with at Truman, not looking much older than when they were there. It's heartbreaking to think on. Sam does cry, when Barry knocks on his door one day. Interestingly enough, when he heads out to spend time with his friend...Sam is a child again for that time.
One day, when Dean takes a walk alone, he meets a young man. He knows him. Amy Pond's son. Dean accepts his earned censure and if Amy and he are with Sam, Dean know's he won't be seeing his brother that day.
Crowley, really, Fergus Macleod, shows up. He's on a bit of a time share with hell, he can't always be in heaven, his past as a demon being a bit problematic, but gets visiting rights.
More people come, Claire and Kaia, Garth (Dean no longer has any reservations about hugging Garth). Bess, Gertie, Little Cas and Littler Sam, Little Dean...a variety of folks that the winchesters or other's they know drop in and out. It's often busy and crowded and Dean is never truly alone.
It's Heaven.

Extreme drought, climate change and criminality drive explosion of fires in Brazil
A huge cloud of thick smoke covers almost all of Brazil. The colors of the mega-biodiverse country that, among other ecosystems, is home to the world’s largest rainforest have given way to gray smoke, and acrid soot. As a resident of São Paulo, the largest Brazilian city, I can’t remember the last time I saw the sky. Unbelievably, this scenario is the same in about 60% of the Brazilian territory.
The situation that led São Paulo and its metropolitan region, according to the IQAir website, to register, earlier this week, the worst air quality among all the world’s metropolises is the result of a combination of climate change impacts and criminal forest burning for land clearance and occupation. At the same time, more than half of Brazil is also suffering the direct impact of the climate crisis, facing our worst drought in the last 44 years. When it comes to fires, the country is about to surpass an astonishing 160,000 fire outbreaks in 2024 – a number 104% higher compared to last year, in which almost 78,000 outbreaks were registered.
According to Cemaden (the National Center for Monitoring and Warning of Natural Disasters), a total of 1,995 Brazilian cities are in a situation of extreme drought, and more than 1,300 municipalities are facing severe drought conditions. It is the first time that a deficit of rainfall has been observed for such a long time, regular rains are expected just for mid-October, in such an extensive area of Brazil – conditions which drives the spread of fires. The fires that spread through practically all Brazilian ecosystems, with the Amazon, the Cerrado and the Pantanal being the most affected, are caused by human action in 90% of the cases.
According to the government, in the first seven months of this year, more than 5.7 million hectares were burned, a growth of 92% compared to 2023. Mato Grosso, Pará, Amazonas and Tocantins, all states in the Legal Amazon, lead the fires. In Mato Grosso, for example, the increase in fires jumped 646%, from 1,400 last year to almost 10,700 this year.
The explosion of fires, as well as coincidences in the burned areas, raises suspicions of criminal and orchestrated acts. In the state of São Paulo, for example, according to information from IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute) 2,600 hot spots were registered between August 22 and 24th, 81% of which were concentrated in areas of agricultural use. The analysis also shows the appearance of columns of smoke in the state in a short interval of 90 minutes, raising even more suspicions about criminal acts.

Some of the Original Movies Disney+ & Hulu Removed are Available to Purchase Digitally
If you didn't know, earlier this year Disney+ & Hulu followed a trend of removing a bunch of originals from their services in a cost cutting measure. Since those were pieces of original content, you couldn't watch them anywhere else. But now 12 of the 15 movies they removed can be bought on digital storefronts like Amazon and Apple. Those movies are:
Artemis Fowl
Better Nate Than Ever
Cheaper by the Dozen (2022)
Clouds
Crater
Darby and the Dead
Flora and Ulysses
Hollywood Stargirl
The One and Only Ivan
The Princess
Rosaline
Stargirl
Trevor the Musical, Magic Camp, & Black Beauty (2020) are still unavailable.
When you buy a movie digitally, you don't technically own it. You own the right to stream that film as long as it is available on the platform you bought from. So if these are delisted from digital storefronts, you won't have access to them. UNLESS you download them. If you download a movie you've purchased (not rented) it stays downloaded even if the title is delisted. I had that happen with a movie I bought on iTunes but since I had it downloaded to an external hard drive, I could still watch it.
Physical media is always the best way to preserve media, but considering you couldn't watch these AT ALL and now you can this is definitely a win. And the more money these movies make on digital storefronts, the more its creators will make with residuals.
TL;DR - 12 movies Disney removed from streaming services can now be bought digitally and that's good.

just a quick thought about AI and Big Tech dystopia before I go on a walk
One reason I find a lot of sci-fi just fundamentally bad is 1. a lot of it doesn't tell a compelling story about the human nature and just focuses on the aesthetics of technology and exploitation (Cyberpunk 2077)... just doomporn.
2. nobody understands energy expenditure and limited resources and I will make a video essay about it one day
3. there is so much dystopia happening already, what you're inventing for your story isn't even remotely scary because we're gonna be f'ed in 300 different ways before we get to your "cameras in your eyes" black mirror episode
Here's a case in point of our current slowly bursting AI bubble: In 2005, Amazon (back in their pre-cloud era) unveiled a new service: Amazon MTurk. The name is derived from the Mechanical Turk - the name originating from an 18th century fake animatronic that played chess, while actually hiding a human hidden inside it; the wider meaning of the phrase being humans disguised as intelligent computers.
You know Google Street View? With faces blurred? I did that.
No, of course I didn't blur all faces in all of Street View photos. But neither did Google.
They hired - for about about as much as a Spotify stream gets you for a unit of work - incredibly low paid humans to look at photos from google street view (my internet speed then was EDGE if I was lucky, and GPRS if I wasn't), blurring human faces and brands, selecting pedestrian crossings, and marking individual traffic signs according to their type. I calculated that at my maximum work efficiency, it would make me about $0.80 per hour I think?
Now in 2020s, Amazon is shutting down their magical "AI" auto-checkout stores because they couldn't make it profitable to have near-slaves (paid about $1.50 per hour, I think?) in so-called 3rd world countries going through cameras to record what people have put in their baskets.
Starship Technologies, a company that I generally respect because I've actually talked to their engineers, are also using humans - better paid than above examples at least - to navigate their robots in difficult situations. (Mostly-self-driving slow tiny delivery robots with like 6 or 9 cameras is generally technically doable in ways that driving a high speed killing machine car isn't, and never will be. Still, an example of human intelligence is irreplaceable even in companies with smart people who try to do things right.)
Every time you use Alexa, "OK Google", or post potentially graphic or unsafe content on facebook, there's someone poorly paid who will have to review your content sooner or later.
We don't live slavery free. The bubble MUST burst.

Strangers in Paradise pt 5 - Let's Go Lasso
Start this module here!
Previous part here!
Links to all posts for this module in the pinned post!
Lasso Perimele: As Perimele fights her way toward the door, you regretfully draw your enchanted lasso from its place on your belt. You unfurl it and swing it about your head, building momentum. Then you cast it out and it soars across the high-ceilinged Temple of Justice, toward a renegade Perimele.
Perimele might be an Amazon, but we're Diana, so we only need a 5 or better to succeed here!
Lassoed: Your lasso whips down toward Perimele. She tries to dodge it, but it lands around her, the Amazon struggling as you pull the lasso tight. Suddenly, you sense a violent tremor pass through her and the lasso, as Perimele sinks to the floor. The great Amazon hall falls silent as Philippus asks, "Perimele, why did you attack your sisters?" "I...I don't know..." Perimele replies haltingly. "The urge came over me and I couldn't fight it." "Why did you drive the horses over the cliffside?" Philippus asks, more concerned for Perimele's well-being than the horses'. "Again..." she says, "I don't know...I got a mad urge to do it. At first I was frightened and then...angry. Jealous of Ismene for having such fine horses." Perimele goes still. Queen Hippolyte walks over to you, grim with the moment's import. "Release her, my daughter," Hippolyte says. "We will take her to the Island of Healing until she is fully recovered from her madness." You loosen your lasso and two Amazons lead the subdued Perimele away, taking her to the Island of Healing for observation. The Dispute: The stillness in the Temple of Justice is broken by Ahmad. "Well," says the Kabulian, with a sneer, "so much for your vaunted peaceful solutions." "Is that how you see it?" you ask. "Whatever happened to Perimele was not natural. Some dark enchantment is at work here. In recent days I, too, have felt the same unreasoning fears she described." "Hah! More ignorant superstition, the same foolish illogic which rules this entire island," he retorts. "Ahmad," you reply, "I pray you are never confronted with the true power of what you call 'ignorant superstition.' Mankind is already far too beset by it." The incident at the Temple of Justice puts a dark cloud over the delegation. The ambassadors continue their rounds but with considerably less enthusiasm. You wonder about the impression with which they will return to Man's World. Perimele's violent reaction was completely out of character for her and you wonder what caused it. You find yourself increasingly absorbed with such concerns as the tour progresses. Soon the ambassadors are ready to go to the Coliseum to see the Amazon athletic competition.

Excerpt from this story from National Geographic:
One unusual team joining National Geographic’s two-year exploration of the Amazon River Basin: scientist Ruthmery Pillco Huarcaya and her canine tracking companion. The two first set eyes on each other at an animal shelter in Cusco, a historic city perched in the Peruvian Andes. Something about this mutt reminded Pillco of herself—whippet-thin, tough, persistent. A family had already expressed interest in the dog, but Pillco won her case. With an important new job, the shelter’s dog would help the cause of Amazonian conservation in Peru.
“She’s going to be a hero,” Pillco promised. She took the dog home to her apartment, where she began teaching Ukuku—the name she chose—how to sniff out bear scat on mountain trails. Ukuku is a word for “bear” in Quechua, the Indigenous language of Pillco’s childhood. She grew up a few hours’ drive from Cusco, in a village where storytelling gives special power to the black Andean bear, the animal Pillco now studies as a field biologist for the Peruvian nonprofit Conservación Amazónica ACCA and as part of the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition.
The research project, involving more than a dozen scientists, includes the river’s high mountain origins, where cloud moisture and droplets of melting snow form the very beginnings of the world’s greatest freshwater river system. The Andean bears’ role in this elaborate ecosystem is crucial, Pillco believes. Because they eat seeds in the lowlands and climb long distances to defecate in the mountains, they’re helping preserve forests by dispersing tree seeds at cooler, higher altitudes as the climate warms.
Pillco knew a tracking dog would be vital, and by the time she moved into her mountainside field station and lab last year, Ukuku was well on the way to fulfilling her job description: Andean bear tracker, on call 24/7. When the station alarm sounds, signaling that a camera trap has captured a bear for temporary collaring and study, usually the first beings on the trail—day or night—are the Quechua biologist and her beloved perrita valiente, her brave little dog.
