(Astronomy Fun Fact!)

These photos are a good showcase of a phenomenon we call 'Earthshine'.

Sunlight travels for approximately 93.000.000 miles to reach Earth. A portion of that light is reflected into the Moon. And as a natural reflector, it ends up reflecting that light from Earth BACK into Earth - effectively taking the direction right into our eyes.

The result? You are able to see clearly the unlit side of the Crescent Moon - if that weren't the case, then the unlit side of the Moon would be as dark as space and we wouldn't see a thing.

And it gets even better: this is not an unique phenomenon, it happens with almost every other planet and their natural satellite!

This is a rare instance of 'Jupitershine'.

IO, the volcanic moon of Jupiter - having its uncrescent side lit by its planet Jupiter, which is directly reflecting sunlight into it.

Ditto. This one we call 'Saturnshine'.

Mimas, the icy moon of Saturn - having its uncrescent side illuminated by Saturn, which is also redirecting sunlight into it.
