I’m rewatching Always Watching: A Marble Hornets story and it caused me to remember and old debate that went on back in the day about whether Slenderman and the Operator were the same being.

I know Slendy was based on the Marble Hornets stuff so I’m not sure why people say they aren’t the same being. Like they can have different names and be the same thing…

let me clarify that so many characters(including those who have nothing to do with her in canon) are deeply connected to Jane bc 1. she's the princess/queen 2. i need someone to connect the story 3. she's pretty and deserves to be the mc

ok so tims a knight. he climbs up the ranks despite wavering loyalty to the king and queen. he's prob like 40 something in this and watched princess jane grow up. im debating between him going rogue after jeffs attack, or if he has stronger loyalty towards jane since. yk. hes been protecting her since she was a baby and now she's so young and lost her parents and has an entire kingdom on her shoulders now.

regardless, he's always been doing shady shit as a knight, but he was always smart and strong and held up a great image to the public n the royals. decent guy

NOW BRIAN IS MORE FUN TO ME . he was an executioner. i have no real reasoning for this aside from the mask felt very very fitting. i was thinking id put him as an executioner under janes parents, since they'd be more cruel than her, But jane disassembles that bc its freaky and puts him as a knight, getting trained under tim.

although . . you mentioned prophets and i like that idea. maybe smth smth he was an executioner who always had these weird visions and stuff while chopping off heads. and he went to king n queen rambling shit and stuff. and they tell him to shut the fuck up but JANE LISTENED and REMEMBERED and went to him after her parents death and he got put into a brand new weird position. although, i cant really think of a reason Why jane would remember/care if he was just giving prophecies from the operator or something... maybe the operator was the one who got into jeffs head to lead the attack so brian said smth? idk.

maybe ill just make him an executioner prophet turned knight prophet. and obv the prophecies are on behalf of the operator. but jane would follow slender..SO WHO KNOWS

well ! if I'm posting about my other interests ! have a little how-to guide for getting into marble hornets:

firstly, what is it.

that's an answer in two parts! it's a foundational indie horror web series on youtube that was beloved in its time for its mystery, atmosphere, and editing (pioneering or popularizing many of the techniques that you'll see more commonly now in the analogue horror genre, just with the budget of college students in 2009).

and it's remembered fondly Now for its fascinating representation of mental health (in how it subverts the harmful ways that horror tends to depict more stigmatized disorders, but Also in how it depicts mental and physical health in general), and the underlying queer themes that While subtext at the time have ultimately been confirmed as intentional as one co creators (and actor for the main character) has come out as bisexual!

it is Also a wildly creative and beautiful comic series. written solely by troy wagner (the aforementioned co-creator) and illustrated by jackie reynolds (a long time fan of the series and insanely talented illustrator). taking place after the events of the webseries, the comics take full advantage of this new visual medium to express the horror, atmosphere, and emotions of the series in a more visceral way. and being self published they're free to make whatever they'd like

done entirely in water color and ink, it builds beautifully on what was laid down with the original series and carves out its own identity and legacy.

it's also just very lovely seeing queer creators who were once writing subtext be able to just. Be Open about it. both about themselves and their characters. it's a horror story that happens to have queer characters mind, but it's just ! nice.

now ! being internet horror that's sat in that weird space between args and analogue horror (nightmind would call it Unfiction, but unfortunately that term hasn't caught on as much as I'd have liked) it's not as simple to get into as just like, Watching A Show.

that's not to say you Can't just watch it, but rather I have ways to help you get more out of it :>

this is exactly what it says on the tin ! the entire series in order, I've even included the dvd extras at the end of each season !

two notes: firstly, the full series is captioned, and I think they're very nice captions! and secondly, there's a lot of loud noises in the series, which the captions help mitigate a bit. this is due in part to the nature of the kind of horror it is (though it doesn't have straight up jumpscares), but Also because troy wagner was HoH at the time he was doing the audio editing for the series.

there's significantly fewer issues with the audio as the series goes on (troy actually got surgery for his hearing!) but for the most part it's fine just keeping it Somewhat lower. except entry five. entry five is so very loud <3

2: The in-character twitter for jay merrick (the main character of marble hornets): [Link]

much like the youtube channel is presented as being ran by the main character/pov character of the series (jay merrick), the twitter was created to run along-side the main series! it mostly exists to give us further insight into jay's mental state and personal life that you don't get in the main series, especially early on!

it's a little cumbersome nowadays, especially since twitter doesn't Like being archival. but you kind of just have to scroll all the way to the bottom to when the twitter was created and scroll up to follow along jlkfasdjlkfdas

this is made a Little more difficult because the account got hacked in 2020 and reinstated 2021, so all of the dates are wrong now. but the account always posted when new entries were uploaded so it's easy to watch an entry, check what was posted after it was uploaded, and then see the link for the next entry and know to stop until you've watched.

you don't Have to do it this way, but I think it's the way to get the most out of it!

back in the day, youtube allowed you to make Video Replies, which would be displayed Under whatever video you were responding to! this feature was ultimately removed because of the tendency to do make clickbait in response to whatever was currently popular, but it was Wonderful in this instance !

the youtube channel and twitter were presented as in character, and they took advantage of this by having a second channel created (named totheark) start Replying to the entries as they were uploaded. these videos were highly edited and contained codes and secrets that were meant as messages to the main character (and the audience)!

there was a dedicated community for code breaking throughout the show's entire life, and this list here goes through every one! I like this one in particular because it Also gives us information on How the codes were broken, in a digestible way.

4: Nightmind's marble hornets explained series: [Link]

this is definitely Optional. it's obviously not official media, is outdated now that the comics have started, and I'd say was flawed even at its release. (it's not a spoiler if nobody knows what I'm talking about, so I'll say now that I'm not a fan of his theory with masky, and the seth theory is very famously silly).

BUT! I Do think it's a very good resource when it comes to putting certain crucial things together. as the whole point of the series is that it's a Mystery. you see nearly everything out of order and you're intentionally limited in what you know about characters and their motivations. this series works as a good jumping off point in that it helps to put things into Context and change your perspective on certain events and character With the benefit of said context!

like I said, it's not Required, it might just be helpful! a starting point to help chew on things once you've watched the web series in full for the first time.

but in terms of getting lore (keep in mind i was 11/12 at the time i found creepypasta and just rolled with whatever information i was given regardless if it was lore accurate or not) but i got into the fandom through watching Jordan Persegati’s speed drawings on youtube. i was a huge animation meme kid so getting to watch someone draw while he told their story was so entertaining for me i watched practically every video he put out and still watch some till today. were they lore accurate? idk but i believe every word that man said and still base some of my writing off of what i know through his videos. i have since actually read the original stories and freshened up on the wiki pages, but those videos will always be my basis for getting into this hell hole of a fandom lolol

Proxies Headcanons! [Puppet Strings Lore Dump]

Hey! I have an unfortunate confession to make; I used to really like Fanon Masky when I was like 9 years old. Thankfully I finally watched Marble Hornets and realised what the fuck I'd been missing out. I used to love Fanon Toby too but maybe about two years ago I completely rewrote him after a sudden change of heart.

Did Hoody even have a fanon? I don't think he had a personality beyond being Masky's best friend. That's unfortunate seeing as how he's my favourite one out of the pair.

Anyways, the Proxies have always been such an interesting concept to me. I know that they don't exist in canon, but seriously it's an entertaining thing to imagine a sitcom between the Proxies and Slenderman.

So, without further ado, let's get into it!

Proxies Headcanons

-The 'Proxies' are the employees (only slaves like 50% of the time) of the Slenderman. They do have a greater purpose for being 'hired'; to serve as human energy for the Operator to feed off of. That's why the MOST unstable ones get picked to be proxies, since he feeds off of trauma and emotional energy.

-They do get paid, but only when the Slenderman takes over. Sadly he's aware of why they're here but accepts the fact that there's nothing he can really do about it since the Operator's fed on them so much that they'll basically die if they stop being Proxies (if the Operator doesn't kill them first). It's a lose-lose situation, unfortunately.

-As I said prior; they're the most mentally unstable in the whole Mansion. There are six of them; Rouge, X-Virus/Cody, Kate, Masky/Tim, Hoody/Brian, and Toby. Rouge is the oldest (due to the fact that in her original story she was almost married and almost a mother), and Toby is the youngest.

-Many of the Residents avoid them, especially Masky and Hoody. As they're the most well-known Proxies, they're generally known for being violent and ill-mannered towards others besides each-other and Toby. Although they get closer to everyone eventually, most of the residents heavily disliked them when they first arrived.

-Slender has no idea how they got here, although he has an idea of why they could be here. He's got no idea what happened to Toby, Kate, Rouge, or what the hell a Marble Hornets is. No matter how many times they explain what Slender supposedly did to them, he just doesn't remember as Charles wasn't conscious when it happened.

Although (I believe, its been a while) Marble Hornets take place in 2006, they sort of departed from the Labrinth and returned in 2009 after Masky and Hoody find themselves homeless and basically just drug addicts. They put up with Slender as they have no other place to turn to.

-They mainly go on Political Missions; such as assassinating a target in the Underworld, or they kill actual people in the real world. These usually consist of people who get too close to finding out about the Pastas, cultists, and basically just any random target Slender picks out for them.

-They're sort of their own family, as they share rooms in the same corridor which is quite far away from the other Residents. Rouge actually has her own home, but the other four live in the Mansion.

-They all magically have access to drugs. Nobody knows and nobody asks why, but whenever they need a fix, all they need to do is go to Hoody's room and pay $5.

-Speaking of Hoody, he has selective mutism, and even then he rarely talks. He only verbally communicates with the other Proxies, and doesn't speak to anyone else at all. Sometimes he'll randomly chime in to a conversation Toby and Masky are having and laugh as the two jump.

He's just a bit of a goofy guy, really.

-Wondering why I'm exclusively calling them Masky and Hoody? Well, I know it's sort of implied that Tim and Brian have DID and that Masky and Hoody are simply their alter egos, but in this AU they're more like personas that the Operator made up for them. He didn't like how disobedient Tim and Brian are, so when the Operator takes over he personally remolds their personalities so that they're more subservient. It sounds confusing but I'm trying

-I'm going to make a separate post for Tim and Brian, but a little backstory is that the two of them have known each other since Kindergarten and have grown up together since. They're best friends and their bond is just so strong that nobody can ever really come between them.

Although they're seen hanging out with Toby a lot, Toby is aware of the fact that Tim and Brian are the original duo.

-Masky is the unofficial group leader of the Proxies, and everyone else just kind of accepts that. He's a cool guy and does know how to take charge, however he's always incredibly rebellious to the Slenderman's orders, which leaves Toby to step up every time they fuck up real bad.

-Slenderman sometimes accompanies them. He doesn't help, he just watches from a corner and sometimes jumps out at them to scare them. It's a favourite pass time of his. He will help them out on occasion, as keep in mind he is a low-level God.

-Dr. Smiley and Nurse Ann's makeshift Hospital is basically their second home. Since they get injured so much on all of their missions (totally not due to Masky going against the direct orders), they often all come together to get treated with whatever nasty injury they get from their most recent endeavour.

-Hoody and Slender, both people who don't talk very often, easily understand each other. It's sort of an inside joke that they can telepathically talk to each other. It's basically the only form of a relationship they have considering Hoody's very wary of him.

-Masky hates cheesecake. And crayons. And children. And Slenderman (although when it's Charles they're relationship is a bit better). The Masky in this AU would fucking HATE fanon Masky.

Cheesecake is Masky's least favourite food. He'd rather eat a pile of dog shit. Lazari thought this was funny and made sure to include a panel of him eating Cheesecake in every comic that she makes.

1. Top 5 favorite horror movies?

in no particular order:

Black Christmas (1974) Dir. Bob Clark i think this movie is an absolute classic, and while the acting can be silly at times, i think its solid when it needs to be and i think the scares and suspense definitely hold up!

Saw (2004) Dir. James Wan anyone who has followed me for any length of time knows i love the saw movies LOL but the original saw holds such a special place in my heart. i do think its a genuinely good film with a solid story and good acting (yes even Leigh Whannell's acting) and i think that if you let yourself get immersed in the suspense of it all u can have a really good time (and its NOT anywhere near as gory as the film's reputation will have u believe)

Creep (2014) Dir. Patrick Brice i loveeee this movie so much. found footage is my favorite style of horror movie, and this is such an interesting premise for a found footage movie that i think was executed very well!! Mark Duplass' performance is incredible in this film, he freaks me out every time i watch it. (there is also a sequel, Creep 2 (2017) which is just as good in my opinion)

Rec (2007) Dir. Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza i do love a good zombie movie and rec is by far my favorite. its another example of a creative way to use the found footage style and i think that the acting and story are both really engaging, and it has a good mix of suspense and outright scary shit. (same as with creep, i love rec 2 just as much as i love the first one <3 however 3 and 4 are like. totally different movies which. i will not speak on here)

Alien (1979) Dir. Ridley Scott i know some people wouldn't consider this to be a horror movie BUT i would consider them to be wrong. i love this movie so much, its an absolute classic, what else is there to say

5. Underrated film(s)?

one movie that i absolutely loved that i dont think people talk abt a lot is Vivarium (2019) Dir. Lorcan Finnegan. its a weird one and i love it. the premise is fun and creative and its just uncanny and unsettling and i liked this movie a lot.

also!! 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) Dir. Dan Trachtenberg is really good and pretty slept on. i love the suspense in this movie and i always love a good big scary alien

10. Horror movie(s) that made you love the genre?

not technically a movie but Marble Hornets the youtube series by Troy Wagner and Joseph DeLage was a huge landmark in my own experience with horror. this one is special to me for like. sentimental personal reasons. but also because when i watched it for the first time, i had never seen anything like it. it was just so cool and original and it did scare me which was so fun! if u have a couple hours to spare and have never seen it before i highly recommend checking it out bc the whole thing is still up and free on youtube.

also Pan's Labyrinth (2006) Dir. Guillermo del Toro is another one that is very near and dear to me. it's also special to me for sentimental personal reasons lol but it's also the first Guillermo del Toro movie i ever saw and i just adore his work

19. Favorite 2020s film (so far)?

OGH this is hard because there have been so many good horror movies lately but i love love love Talk to Me (2022) Dir. Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou. the best way i've heard this movie described was by youtuber Mista GG who said abt this movie "they're not reinventing the wheel here, but that wheel? fucking wheels." and i couldn't agree more. it felt like such an instant classic to me in that it hit all of the typical horror movie beats in a very fun and fresh way

23. Favorite Body Horror?

i will admit im not very well versed in body horror yet!! its a genre im only recently getting into, so i dont want to say i have a favorite yet but!! The Bay (2012) Dir. Barry Levinson has some pretty cool body horror elements that i really enjoyed! i think this is a fun and kinda gnarly movie in general.

26. Favorite Psychological Horror?

hands down my fave psychological horror is Black Swan (2010) Dir. Darren Aronofsky i love how ambiguous and unsettling this movie is. and ofc if ur talking abt black swan u have to mention her predecessor Perfect Blue (1997) Dir. Satoshi Kon which is an absolute classic and is so beautifully animated and delivers that same sense of ambiguity and dread. (these movies are the epitome of why pit two bad bitches against each other to me. lets enjoy both of them together <3)

30. A fun movie fact that you like sharing with people?

OK THIS ONE IS EASY i love practical effects forever and ever amen and i especially love the practical effects in the saw movies!! almost all of the traps in the movies are fully functional in some capacity, but my favorite movie trivia is that in Saw 3 during the pig vat scene, the maggots that you see in all of the pigs and in all of the goop and all over Barry Flatman are real live maggots that had been sterilized so that they were totally safe to accidentally (or purposefully i suppose) ingest! here is a super fun video from the saw 3 dvd bonus features talking abt the making of the pig vat trap that talks abt the maggots

From far away it seems as if this man is much more reasonable than the other creatures and residents in this house. He is quiet and calm but I must warn anyone that if they encounter him, he WILL kill you, due to his position and morals.

Tim Wright Status: Alive Age: 28 Species: Human Danger: Lethal Appearance: A 5'7" man with dark, dark brown hair, side burns, and scruffy facial hair. He has dark, dusty brown eyes and dark circles from lack of sleep, thick eyebrows and always looks as though he watched you kill his puppy. He is a bit stout and chubby but this only adds to his surprising swiftness and strength. He has such an aura of sadness around him at almost all times. There's a sort of melancholy handsomeness to him. His face doesn't matter though because you will almost always see him wearing a white plastic mask with black lipstick and surprised eyebrows drawn on it, hence "Masky". Tim Wright is one of the first victims of Slenderman, who he knew as the Operator at the time of his manipulation. His friend, Alex, was killed in a series of incidents when they were in high school. Tim and Brian were the only ones to survive these events, a sort of 'initiation', as explained by Slenderman. Tim was sick. His parents and family thought it was schizophrenia, a mental illness that caused him to see images of the Operator when he was just moving from high school to college. Tim was growing more and more sick. He was coughing, bleeding, unable to sleep, in immense pain. Nothing seemed to cure it. Nothing anyone did could help. Slenderman offered him a way out. "These pills," he explained, "Will solve everything. You can get them from me. If you win." His friend group were pretty normal and all wanted to focus on film and writing, and during their first year they played a sick game that turned them all against each other. Alex died trying to win, trying to escape. Tim did not let him live. He needed to win, to have a cure to this sickness, a way to make it stop, even if it was just temporary. It was what was promised of he could win, if he could prove himself. It was sick, it was twisted, but he had no choice. After Alex died, the 'game ended', and Tim stuck with Slenderman due to the sickness, the need for pills, he was stuck. he was a husk of his former self. He didn't know who he was, what he had become. His parents didn't know. His friends were all gone. except Brian. It's all a blur now. Spending so much time around Slenderman seems to has rotted his memory of what actually happened. replaced it with false memories, maybe. But he knows he can never go back, he could never undo what was done. he can never apologize. He'll never see Alex again. Because wherever he goes when he dies, Alex will not be waiting for him.

Now he is a quiet, observant, obedient servant for the creature that stole his life away. He is usually calm and collected, and when he isn't he is smoking or drinking to drown out all the noise. He has never known a life without the static in his ears, scrambled images in his head. He is under constant pressure to perform well, to protect everyone, and to do whatever it takes to finish this war. And so he will.

what’s kate’s relationship with tim like??

ok so. in my au, kate became a proxy at age 13 in 2008. tim was infected his entire youth, but 'masky' was developed at 21 in 2010 and became an official proxy at 23 in 2012. sooooo..

of all the different people tormenting Tim in the events of marble hornets, Kate was one of them. that one scene where he'd on the forest floor screaming and grabbing at the dirt and getting dragged around, I imagined Kate did stuff like that to him a lot. a 15 year old girl violently torturing some 21 yr old dude .... dragging him around and shattering his windows and beating his car with a rock and shoving pills down his throat and hell on earth in general.

so when he eventually submits to slendy and has to work WITH kate, he cannot stand her. she was apart in ruining his life, and at this point in the story, she is off putting. doesn't ever talk to him, makes noises, has been caught just sifting through corpses, always covered in grime, has never once took off her mask, etc.

he'd snap at her all the time, push her out of the way, grumble about how nasty she is, this and that. i think when toby comes along and gently befriends kate like a feral cat, tim would start to realize she's. just some girl. she's definitely gross and animalistic and cruel, but because of toby bringing her to the cabin, he's watched her scream and cry in agony as slendy punishes her. she claws at the floor and her skin and begs someone to put a bullet in her brain and she looks SO young and so scared and it'd be a massive reality check for tim.

and of course, kate would have strong distaste for tim as well. he's not nice to her, and she does not extend her trust easy. even when tim reels back and is gentler towards her, kates silent, cold, and standoffish. she'll never acknowledge her wrongs and the torture she put him through(albeit forcefully), but she isn't exactly.. mean? to him? he'll say goodmorning and she'll just watch him behind her mask. toby walks in and says goodmorning, and kate says goodmorning. tim's like damn ok .

i don't think they ever fully reconcile for what happened between them... im still deciding how i want tim and brian to ditch town, and if i want them to try and make amends cuz they were such outsiders to the main cast and often viewed the rest as worse than themselve... much to consider

Horror Rant.

TW: spoilers for urban spooks analog series and scary themes (obviously!).

Recently, I've been just.. not scared by horror related stuff. Its ironic in the way that horror is *supposed* to be scary, no matter what kind of horror genre it is whether it be analog (internet) horror, horror stories, gore, horror movies, well- except jumpscares, those always work for me but even those are dull to me now! It's truly a sad reality, but, I still enjoy horror nonetheless. When I was younger i was always interested in the horror genre. I mean, Me and my dad actually watched Annabelle when I was a little kid and my first hyperfixation was fnaf and other indie horror titles you've seen online before like: bendy & the ink machine, creepypastas, and much more. Having being a very passionate fan of the horror genre, it makes me sad to see it all become watered down and the complete opposite of what 'horror' was supposed to be in the first place. Like for example: urban spooks analog series, the art and soundtrack is amazing, but the story is too repetitive and really only exists for shock value. The newer installments of their series have had more interesting ideas and more like the phone call between the woman and the police officer or the animation of the killer(s?) breaking into a house of their newest victim(s). Horror media like: skinamarink, marble hornets, abandoned by Disney (the creepypasta), the babadook, and the list go on, are an example of some good horror related media. They have a cohesive story (if given time), good writing, good artistic creativity, music (if they have any), and they use their scare tactics to spook you: scare tactics much like how the backrooms uses your feeling of nostalgia and familiarity to trick you into a false sense of security just to pull that (figurative) rug out from under your feet and drop you right into the spooks. It saddens me to see the horror genre fall down into a deep, dark pit like this, it really does. What you, the reader, can take away from this rant is that if you want to make your own scary series, you should do it, just learn from the mistakes from horror creators before you and better your own with those lessons, go on and create something beautiful, viewer. stay creative and be safe, everyone! :0)
