There’s two things going on here that are coming to a head that need to be discussed. What you’re seeing a collision of different community needs within a broader context.

One is that lgbt content should exist for teens since orientation effects more than sexuality. Minors deserve to have their emerging feelings examined in places where they are safe, thoughtful, and appropriate. LGBT+ people also deserve happy, loving stories that aren’t filled with endless drama and a angst.

On the other hand, a lot of older LGBT+ are aware that sex and risk are impossible to remove from the equation of queer identity because sex and gender are the two primary agents where LGBT existence challenges the existing hegemony and are often the ones targeted by laws. Wanting to see more age appropriate content is one thing, but we should absolutely be wary of the increasing trend of sanitized content when it comes to sex and violence, especially around LGBT+.

We aren’t living in the post-modern world yet. There is, in fact, a huge conservative backlash building in the underbelly of the political machine. It’s most obvious in the anti-trans rhetoric and the overturning of Roe, but if you’ve been keeping up with it, they’re not stopping there. They’ll gladly come for everybody else’s rights. Some have blatantly said it.

The sanitization of media isn’t an exaggeration. We are actively seeing it happen. Fandoms are infiltrated by socially conservative purity culture now. People are talking about removing sex scenes from movies and shows like this is a totally normal idea and not one deeply entrenched in religious moral rhetoric from the past. (Not violence, though! Which is totally fucked when you think about the obsessive focus on consent and how often violence isn’t but sex IS consented to.) It’s happening even on shows that don’t start that way — I literally watched a show on Netflix over six years go from great bi rep to bizarrely conservative, evangelistic narration where the two bi characters got married, had kids, and then had to denounce their former slutty ways. Talk about a bait and switch!

I had a friend comment to me one that it felt like we only got marriage as a silent trade off to being “good gays.” That’s why you have young LGBT railing against the audacious displays of Pride. That’s why you see more and more adult LGBT+ content (especially wlw content!) being pulled right and left. You can have your legal rights, they said, but you need to get rid of the queer. You need to be as much like us as possible to pass!

I don’t think she’s wrong, and I think it’s obvious by now it’s a lie. They still hate us. They still want to overturn Oberfeld. They still want to take away trans and women’s rights. For some, the only good gay is one that doesn’t exist.

But even outside of LGBT+, we are starting to see the impact of media sanitization and the lack of productive sexual dialogue on young people. They’re scared of it. It’s been put on a pedestal that they can’t approach sensibly, and so they either don’t at all or do so incautiously. There’s new wave conservatism rising amongst some of them, but on the other hand…STD rates are on then rise. Fewer young people are getting into relationships, both as a result of the economic stresses of their society but also because we aren’t modeling healthy ones for them. It’s the worst of both worlds.

So while I agree that things like Heartstopper and Love, Simon should exist for kids, I do think we should be critical of the increasing lack of adult queer content. We need both, but there’s a very obvious trend of the latter being canceled or sanitized to avoid the complex realities of publicized queerness. What’s actually happening is that the group that’s criticizing the former, IMO, is having trouble articulating their actual fears about the latter — not that things like Heartstopper are a problem but that it feels like media is selling sex and gender minorities a false sense of security at odds with the political reality.

Their problem isn’t with that media or the kids who see themselves in it. Their problem is with the corporations who want to say it’s the only acceptable experience by way of sweeping the rest of the mess under the rug. That’s where I think the disconnect between different parts of the LGBT+ community on these issues is mainly coming from. People would have less concerns if things like Heartstopper existed in the same world where things like Warrior Nun did, but they aren’t, and it’s becoming glaring.

seen lots of articles and people saying that heartstopper was like "too clean" and that teenagers aren't that wholesome and they should be having sex and doing drugs and stuff and sure some teenagers definitely do have sex and party and do drugs but honestly a lot of teenagers DON'T and the idea in tv that all teenagers do that kind of thing can really fuck you up when you're like 16!!!! because you think you're behind your peers but mostly you AREN'T !!!!! we need boring teenager representation not everyone has a euphoria skins degrassi teenagehood some of us didn't drink or party or date some of us just did the kind of stuff they did in heartstopper like walk dogs and have sleepovers and skip prom to hang out at a friend's house and dance and have a good time and watch sitcoms!!! like heartstopper is good representation for people who just had regular uneventful teenage years!!!!

I also adore Gar and Jon as characters! Thank you! I made a bi Jon icon and a bi/trans Gar icon for pride month since those are my headcanons. (Bi Gar is canon though,, thank you Ryan!) I wish Jon was bi like he is in the comics but this is The CW we're talking about, making Jon bi would mean they'd have to write him a proper storyline and they would never do that 🙄

Jon and Gar are the definitions of "best boys". Jordan and Ryan do an incredible job bringing the characters to life despite having barely anything to work with. Their acting always leaves me with stars in my eyes because it's just so full of emotion and has a powerful impact especially if they're angry and get a rare chance to express that anger.

Gar yelling at Dick in the batcave after being shot and Jon yelling at Jordan for spying on him with super hearing are scenes that will permanently live rent free in my brain. There's something satisfying about seeing the character who's expected to be a doormat and apologize for everything finally explode and say what's on their mind. Because if any characters in both shows deserve to blow up, it's Gar and Jon. Gar's treatment wasn't good from the beginning, no spoilers since you haven't watched the season yet but Jon's treatment has gotten so much worse in season 2.

Honestly, they both need to take a long vacation together to a beach to relax and forget about all the shit they’re put through. Let them go on evening walks on the beach, play mini golf, get a nice dinner, and crash in a comfy condo.

Baseless Ferengi headcanons no one asked for and that get increasingly queer-navel-gazing and self indulgent because the horrible space goblins have consumed my brain:

- Mobile ears, because if hearing is so well developed and important to them they should be able to aim those big stupid radar dishes. Also because then they can emote with them and that's cute. THE AESTHETIC IS PARAMOUNT.

- Since they canonically sharpen their teeth with chew sticks and sharpeners, their teeth must grow continuously. So I submit: subcultures that let certain teeth grow out as a fashion/political statement. Ferengi punks and anarchists with 5" tusks. Ferengi with all their teeth filed flat (mom and dad HATE it).

- Corollary to the above, most of their teeth are crooked. At the least, they don't share our fetish for straight teeth. What if their teeth are deciduous, and there's no point in trying to force them into perfect alignment, since they'll just fall out and get replaced? So like, sharks but their teeth can also grow longer with no limit. WHAT HAST EVOLUTION WROUGHT ON FERENGINAR :V

- Parents nagging their kids to sharpen their teeth "or they'll grow up into your brain and you'll die :)"

- Personal space? Don't know her.

- Pushing back against the worst canon episode a bit but: relative ear size being the only obvious sexually dimorphic trait, and even that having enough of a gray area that the only way to be 100% sure you're talking to a male or female Ferengi is if you do a blood test. Unless they're intersex! *shrug emoji*

- This is why they're so fanatical about gender conformity and their Victorian "separate spheres" attitude to men and women's roles. Capitalist patriarchy is fragile! And as artificial to Ferengi as it ever was to Humans! (self-indulgenceeeee about gender shiiiiit)

- You know how with domesticated rabbits, the rabbit getting groomed and paid attention to is the boss? Yeah. Go ahead and paint your bestie's nails, just don't be surprised if she cops a little bit of an attitude with you from then on.

- Their fight/flight/freeze/fawn instincts skew heavily toward the last three, and what a lot of other species read as annoying sucking up is the Ferengi in question feeling anxious and unsafe. Especially if they don't feel integrated into the group. Even being at the bottom of the pecking order is better than not being in the flock at all.

- If they DO opt for fight, it's ugly and typically their last resort. Bites or scratches will get infected without intervention-- microbes that their immune system can handle could cause big trouble for aliens. You might wanna check for full or partial teeth that break off and get lodged in the wound, too.

- Too many of these are tooth related but I don't care. :B More teeth stuff: you know what else has teeth that grow constantly? Puffer fish. Likewise, Ferengi can chew up mollusk shells as easy as potato chips, and they need the minerals for their teeth. (Imagine grandpa Sisko offering Nog a crayfish for the first time and watching as he just...pops the whole damn thing in his mouth and crunches away...)

- Their staple foods seem to be grubs and other arthropods, high in protein and fat. I've unilaterally decided their cuisine also involves a lot of edible fungi, ferns, plant shoots and seeds. Gotta get those vitamins. Overall flavor profile leaning toward umami, vegetal, and fresh herbs, and pretty mild (or "delicate" if you wanna be snooty about it, which a Ferengi probably would let's be real).

- Not much sugary food. I'm basing this solely on Quark's aversion to root beer as "cloying". Which could definitely just be his personal preference, but most of the people I hear hating on root beer cite the actual sassafras/sarsaparilla flavor (saying it tastes like medicine) not the sweetness. Nog might be the weirdo outlier for being able to enjoy it.

- Their home planet isn't bright and sunny, so their eyes are better at discerning shades of gray in low light conditions, with relatively weak color vision. Which could explain why they dress Like That.

- Conversely, human music has a reputation for stinking on ice because a lot of it is juuuuust lightly dissonant or out of tune because we can't pick up flaws that small. Ferengi can, and it drives them up the *wall*.

- Music? So many different kinds. Traditionally, maybe lots of percussion and winds, and water as a common component of many instruments to alter pitch or tone. Polyphony out the ass. Some of the modern stuff is an impenetrable wall of sound if you're not a species with a lot of brain real estate devoted to processing sounds. Pick out one melody to follow at a time.

- Yes, back to teeth again I'm sorry. It's a sickness. At some point in their history, pre-chewing food was just something you did for your baby or great grandma as a matter of necessity. Possibly your baby gets an important boost to their immune system and gut biome from your spit. At some point takes on a more formal intimacy aspect and gradually drifted from something all adults and older kids do to something only women do. Your husband and older kids have perfectly functional teeth, but you love them, right? =_= (Think old memes about husbands being useless in the kitchen if little wifey isn't there to cook, but even more ridiculous. Ishka was right about everything but especially this. Thank you for making your family chew their own food, Ishka. Not all heroes wear capes. Or anything!)

- How did they get started on the whole men: clothed vs women: unclothed nonsense? My equally stupid idea: men just get cold easier. Those huge ears dissipate a ton of body heat. Cue Ferengi cliches like "jeez, we could be standing on the surface of the sun and my husband would put on another layer." At some point, again, this got codified and pushed to ridiculous extremes in the name of controlling women and keeping everyone in their assigned box, to the point that women just have to shiver if they really are too cold and men have to pass out from heat stroke if the alternative is going shirtless, because That Would Be Inappropriate.

- Marriages default to five years, but they're also the only avenue for women to have their own household or any stability. Plus their religion places no emphasis on purity save for pure adherence to the free market and the RoA. So, curveball to the rest of their patriarchal bullshit: female virginity isn't a concern in the least. Bring it up and they'll rightly side-eye you.

- Family law is absolutely bonkers and lawyers that specialize in it make BANK. I feel like custody would default to the father usually but oh wait, the maternal grandfather has a legal stake in this, too, and your next father-in-law is asking HOW many kids are you dragging into my daughter's house, etc etc. Growing up with a full sibling is way rarer than growing up with half or stepsiblings, since it usually takes both men and women two or three tries to find someone they vibe with. (Not love, unless you're super cringe.)

- A misogynistic society is a homophobic society. Imo those flavors of shittiness just come in pairs. Homosexual behaviors are fine within certain parameters (aka "always have sex with the boss") but not on your own terms. To add spice, bisexuality is their most common mode (because I'm bi and these are my hcs for my fics I'm not writing, so there), but capitalism demands fresh grist for the mill so you better get het-married and pop out some kids you lowly peons. You have a choice so make the proper one. :)

- Corollary to the above, that doesn't keep all kinds of illicit "we're just friends with quid-pro-quo benefits for realsies" affairs of every stripe and every gender from going on everywhere. Many Ferengi have a lightbulb moment somewhere in early adulthood when they figure out their dad's business partner or the "auntie" who visited their mom every month had a little more going on.

- Plus there's way more gender non-conformity and varying degrees of trans-ing than the powers that be have a handle on. Pel isn't unique, even if most would have to somehow make it out into space to be able to thrive.

Damn a lot of these are just my personal bugbears plus THE GILDED AGE BUT WITH HAIRLESS SPACE RODENTS ain't they

- Women can't earn profit, okay. But lending or "lending" things to each other isn't commerce, riiiiiiight? To be assigned female is to master navigating a vast, dizzying barter/gift economy. Smart boys and men leverage this, too, and there are splinter sects that view this as the purest expression of the Great Material Continuum.

- Of course plenty of women make profit anyway, and just do their bast to dodge the FCA. The tough thing about insisting on using latinum as currency is that cash can be so hard to track, you know?

- Because of the RoA, guys are discouraged from doing favors or giving gifts without setting clear expectation of getting some return on investment. This can twist into an expression of friendship (and of course women do it too), and the ledger will keep cycling between debit and credit among friends for decades. A common mistake aliens make is to tell them recompense isn't needed without explaining why, or return their favor or present with something that zeroes out the debt. The Ferengi will assume you want to break off the friendship. (I cribbed this from dim memories of an African studies course I took in 2007 and whose textbook I know I still have but I can't frigging find it...)

- Flirting, they do a lot of it for a lot of reasons. Roddenberry made it clear that they're just straight up pretty horny, but there's no reason it can't pull double duty for building alliances with other people, smoothing over feuds or disagreements, or cementing friendships. Ferengi who are ace and/or sex-repulsed are possibly viewed similar to the way we'd view someone who's "not a hugger/not big on touching" and if they flirt just don't get offended if it doesn't go any further; aro Ferengi don't garner much comment aside from an occasional "wow how badass, never falling in love with anyone."

- where to even start on making sense of the Blessed Exchequer??? Like seriously, what is this literal prosperity gospel insanity, I need to force myself to re-read Rand and like, some Milton Friedman for this shit. Help.

any recs of anime or manga with butch characters? ive seen all the standard ones like sailor moon, oniisama e (rei is always on my mind), and standard yuri animes. i just would love to see more masculine female characters :/

i’m butch myself, so seeing this in my inbox made me smile. but before address the question, i want to cover my bases and clarify a couple of points first:

“butch” as a wlw identity doesn’t really exist in japan the same way it does in like, america for instance. the japanese lgbt scene has its own identities, roles, and lexicon which are embedded within the history of japanese lgbt people. while the terms “neko” and “tachi” are often mistranslated as “fem(me)” and “butch”, they aren’t actually the same thing, and have completely separate histories and social contexts in which they exist.

however, you seem to be using the term butch here to loosely mean “masculine woman”, rather than as a wlw identity/role, so i’m gonna follow your lead. generally speaking, women’s masculinity in japan has a very different history and set of standards than that of western butchness. japanese masc women, as a result, don’t present the same way as western masc women, and so in many cases they may not read the same way to a western reader as they would to a japanese one. stuff like that is important to keep in mind when looking at how masculinity in women is portrayed in japanese media. 

as an aside, i generally dislike the use of the descriptor “masculine female” to define “butch”, as it can be interpreted as exclusionary to butch trans women. while obviously trans women are as female as any other woman, there’s significant precedent for terfs using the term “masculine female” as a catch-all which homogenizes masculine cis women, nonbinary people, and trans men while simultaneously excluding trans women entirely. so i tend to be pretty careful on how i use terms like “male” and “female” in this context.

with all of that being said:

my #1 rec is obviously gonna be revolutionary girl utena, the anime (moreso than the manga, which while due plenty of credit as the source material, is bogged down so much by chiho saitou’s own heteronormativity that it fails to reach its own narrative potential; this is a rare case where the anime adaptation is leagues above the source material in quality). that is, if you haven’t already seen it (not sure whether it falls under your definition of “standard”). the crux of the show is about deconstructing the role of womanhood and its impact on those who live within that role’s relationships both with men and with other women. it is, in my opinion, an indispensable work of art.

similarly, you should definitely check out rose of versailles by riyoko ikeda if you haven’t read/watched it already (you may well have, if you’ve already read oniisama e). it’s not a yuri (unfortunately...it should have been smdh) although it is a staple of the dansou theme in manga, and takes much inspiration from the yuri genre; the female lead oscar, who has lived her whole life within the “male” role, has a very romantic friendship with her friend/mentee rosalie.

golondrina by est em is definitely worth checking out too; the main character is a masc lesbian pursuing the traditionally male-dominated sport of bullfighting, but it isn’t focused on romance (although it does come up, especially later in the series). some might fund the subject matter questionable, although the ethical concerns surrounding bullfighting are discussed, the way it’s romanticized by the main characters is bound to make some people uncomfortable.

i also highly recommend you check out ebine yamaji’s yuri manga, pretty much all of which feature somewhat more “tomboyish” bi women or lesbian main characters. love my life is her most well known work, and it’s my all time favorite work of hers as well. they’re less overtly masculine, and i doubt any would self-describe as such. still, it fits the bill close enough and i can’t resist recommending ebine yamaji every chance i get, so sue me.

tsuki to suppin is another yuri manga you might like, with one of the main characters being rather tomboyish, particularly relative to her more feminine girlfriend. although like with ebine yamaji, it’s more androgyny-based and isn’t the sort of “masculinity” readily intelligible with butchness. if you like soft lesbian slice of life this is a great manga to check out.

karubania monogatari by tono also fits the bill, and is not dissimilar in many ways to rose of versailles as far as both the old-fashioned political elements of its setting and the princely (well, duke-ly) role of the main lead, although i recommend it much more hesitantly than the above, because it has some majorly problematic elements that ultimately lead me to drop the series, but you’re still welcome to give it a go.

to note a couple of non-manga graphic novels from other countries that fit this bill as well:

the manhua tamen de gushi has a distinctly masc/fem lesbian couple as its primary focus. it’s very slow-burn and generally inexplicit, at least in part due to having to circumvent chinese censorship laws, but is still a very sweet read and the characters are very likeable.

the american graphic novel roadqueen by mira ong chua also centers on a masc/fem lesbian couple, and takes a huge amount of inspiration from the yuri tradition, as well as women’s biker gangs. it’s action-packed and a ton of fun.

Father and son type relationship, Miles accidentally called him “dad” a few times as a kid and was a lil embarrassed but Gabriel thought this was cute and let him know it was okay if he saw him that way or called him that.

Fern and the Firbolgs:

He loves them! They love him! Very accepting and kind community and he was happy to be in it and grew up with them.

Literally everything, I’m so sorry there’s so much.

Everything’s gotta start somewhere: The raven queen was promised the Moonshine’s first born child in exchange for money/power. The Moonshines probably could’ve given up miles to anyone for money but they specifically chose the raven queen.

The moonshine parents: Metric and Sys(tem) started a cult called “The cult of the raven queen” whose name itself is explanatory on its own and we will get back to this later.

Miles was born in the underdark and almost immediately taken and put into shadowfell, which made him a shadar kai.

Miles grew up in shadowfell and never knew his birth parents, he was raised by various groups or people but the only one he really truly remembers and felt a deep connection with was a human man named Gabriel Steelwood.

Gabriel was a human ranger adventurer who traveled shadowfell alone but when he met Miles he had basically adopted and raised him as his own.

The two had a father/son relationship, my best way of explaining them and what happened is: Imagine the story of Marceline and Simon from Adventure Time except there is no happy ending.

Gabriel taught Miles how to be a ranger so that’s how he became one in the first place.

His most notable skill would be his skill in animal handling- Gabriel taught Miles not to be afraid of other creatures, beasts and animalistic monstrosities, etc not to be afraid of what he couldn’t yet understand.

Miles became quite fond of creatures from a very young age and genuinely had found them easier to understand than other people as Miles struggles socially a lot.

Gabriel was genuinely a good influence and father figure for Miles as he grew up.

Unfortunately since Gabriel wasn’t native to Shadowfell and wasn’t made for the world- unlike Miles.

Gabriel began to slowly lose touch of himself until a point of no return when he attempted to kill Miles, kind of in a “there’s no point, so die with me” type deal, in return Miles was forced into a position where he had to kill this man.

He didn’t want to, but had to, and he remembers this in graphic detail as Gabriel was really the first person he’d ever killed and it really haunts him.

Miles was like, whatever the elf equivalent of 12 is at the time so this really fucked him up- after this he became a very independent individual as he already knew how to take care of himself and was taught basically everything he needed to know by Gabriel.

Miles didn’t wanna be near many people anymore due to this event, often pushing others away- and sure, sometimes people would stick around with him but they’d always leave him, die or meet some other unfortunate end.

It was hard for him and still is hard for him to really get attached to others and trust others due to this repeating occurrence that seems to follow him. Sometimes even thinking maybe he was the problem, and the reason all of these things were happening.

Somewhere along the way in his mid 200’s of living, he was setting traps to catch something he could eat, eventually hearing one of them go off and upon checking them- he found a Drow elf boy, after being confused and hitting him with a “You aren’t from here” as he cut the trap and let him go, not planning to interact with him or tag along with him or anything- the drow followed him and bombarded him with questions, and talked Miles’ ear off- until eventually mentioning his name being Kilo(meters) Moonshine, Miles clearly taken aback by this- being confused with this information- thinking this guy was screwing with him. The two had a moment of realization and pieced things together amongst the two of them before starting to travel together in hopes of getting out of the shadowfell.

This is where we talk about Kilo and how he ties into Miles:

Kilo was born 100 years (and a few months) after Miles- however, was not meant to be born as he was a mistake, and due to this his parents resented him and he faced extreme neglect.

Kilo was a person who unfortunately was fairly easy to manipulate- not necessarily because he’s dumb but because he puts so much trust in others.

His parents never paid much attention to him and only saw him as a burden or as an extra helping hand sometimes. (as my dad would say “spare parts”) But not ever seen as their child, because of this Kilo thought he was the one who’s fault it was for everything.

Kilo had a hard time accepting that his parents clearly don’t love or care for him, as he was led to believe that parents are supposed to care for and love their children so if they didn’t love him then clearly he was doing something wrong. (also he was never told about the existence of Miles up until he met him)

Over the years he made many attempts to impress or make his parents proud of him in some form or way, in his many attempts he joined an underdark task force militia within his city- and he figured this could be a way that could make his parents proud of him.

Upon joining, his parents were semi-proud of him and did actually talk to him, but more in a sense of talking at him and not with him and just using kilo as a bragging point within conversations.

They didn’t care so much for his individual and well being as a person at all.

Unfortunately for Kilo he would have to quit the force as he had found out that this group was very power hungry and power abusive as they’d take, enslave, sell, torture, etc innocent people or people they fought in battles or convicts, etc.

which still isn’t great, and Kilo was very conflicted with this as he was taught to believe that these people were the good guys, so all of this was incredibly conflicting for him.

What really led him to quit was when he’d accidentally led his force to a completely defenseless and innocent town- what he thought was a dangerous town and told it was their enemies- was completely false.

He actively tried to stop anything bad from happening- but was severely unsuccessful as he was only one person- so whoever couldn’t get out in time was mercilessly killed.

Kilo couldn’t live with that and the guilt on him and his conscience so he had quit which made his parents bully him with dialogue along the lines of “oh you couldn’t handle a little bit of blood? Coward.”

Etc.

To cope with his trauma and guilt, he had to figure out something new to do, so hee took up a job as a delivery/messenger for his city.

This had made him feel somewhat useful, and helped him cope, or at least was a good distraction.

One day, his parents had asked him to deliver a package to a far off location- Kilo knew this prior, so he wasn’t afraid, gearing up to be safe and protected within the underdark.

It took a few days before realizing, the path and location this was leading him to was progressively getting more dangerous and confusing to get to.

He made his way to a beaten up looking wooden door at the end of a cave-in, knocking as the door creaked open, spotting blood on the ground.

Kilo awkwardly set down his package and was about to leave before hearing a voice call out for help- upon further investigation he spotted a fresh humanoid corpse next to a hungry sorrowsworn and a portal leading to shadowfell.

Kilo attempted to fight the creature as it was actively trying to kill and eat him, but it ended in him losing vision in one of his eyes as the hungry sorrowswarm scratched it out.

He slipped and fell on the blood and into the portal where he spent (at least) a few months in before accidentally stumbling into Miles.

For Kilo, this was the first actual person he’s seen in ages so ofc he’s excited and gonna bombard him with questions. And as it states the two figure out they’re bros and find their way out.

Now Miles and Kilo aren’t always traveling together as the two have very different ideals, personalities, morals, motives and bonds.

Kilo’s immediate reaction when he got back to the material world is finding his parents- as to which Miles couldn’t care less about as he knows what they had done to him as a kid via going on a quest for the raven queen and her being like “surprise!! Your parents suck!! That's the secret bestie!!” uh.

Kilo makes his way back to his old house and it is completely empty, there's no note or anything- almost like no one has ever lived here.

So Kilo’s whole deal is wanting to find his parents and figure out what’s happened with them, and Miles just does whatever the fuck he wants now that he’s here on the matierial plane.

Kilo did initially try to teach Miles how to fit in and whatnot but Miles couldn’t really wrap his head around that whole concept and idea.

So he became a criminal as he genuinely found it easier than fitting into society norms and whatnot, but this did lead him into a lot of trouble with other groups of people, criminal or governmental usually.

Along this period of Miles’ life- he met a person who started asking him weirdly invasive and personal questions about being a shadar kai, his stance on the raven queen and shadowfell. Miles is usually a very honest individual though, despite the strangeness of the questions and how out of pocket they were. Who starts a conversation like this?

However, Miles was at a bar at the time and this person was paying for his drinks, so he couldn’t complain too much at the time.

That was until he blacked out and woke up in a very unfamiliar location- turns out the person he was chatting it up with was one of the people a part of the raven queen cult and was actively drugging his drinks to make him pass out and make him weak.

Now fun facts about this cult now that we’re on this:

This cult as stated- was made by Miles’ and Kilo’s parents, they worship the raven queen and think shadowfell is some god like entity of existence and actively go out trying to find this realm and people from it.

BUT(T) their views on anyone native to shadowfell purely is based on what their stance on the raven queen is, so for instance- how shadar kai are supposed to be kinda her loyal subjects and whatnot- if they find out a shadar kai isn’t 100% devoted to the raven queen they are more than willing to use them as sacrifices as they see that as being a golden opportunity let down and see these shadar kai as inferior and see them as a waste of space basically.

Now Miles- isn’t really 100% devoted to her, sure he’s one of her subjects but he doesn’t have super incredibly strong opinions or ties to her. He just does what he wants and doesn’t let things tie him down.

This becomes problematic when you run into a cult that sees you as inferior if you’re not a dedicated subject to their deity they worship.

Upon waking up and being confused and wondering what the fuck happened and what he drank, he had overheard a conversation that his parents were the ones who started this cult (he started connecting dots with the first and last names and how he’s a shadar kai and all that. He

hadn’t shared this with Fern or Kilo, but Fern probably guessed due to the names.)

What he remembers from what he heard was that the moonshines had something big planned, but they weren’t there and the cult was eagerly awaiting their return.

After this he soon met an 8ft tall firbolg who seems to get bossed around by the others here and seems real quiet, Miles yells at him to ask what his deal is and the firbolg seems shy as Miles attempts speaking to him, he eventually writes on a note that says “My name’s Fern” and this is where Fern is first introduced and a side tangent on Fern just like I did with Kilo earlier:

Fern was born into a firbolg community with 10 other firbolgs and primarily had grown up there, he lived a quiet and peaceful life amongst his community as they taught him how to help, protect, and maintain the forest and its beauty. Fern was notably very kind but also was kinda the most daring and adventurous out of his entire group, which wasn’t really saying a lot as often none of them dreamt of doing the things Fern would do or speak of.

Everything was fine, until a town slowly started to build itself nearby their home, at first they weren’t problematic or doing anything harmful. But as the town began to expand is where their problems began.

At first the group subtly tried to hint at the town that they shouldn’t build or live here- using their abilities to change the outline and terrain of the forest to make it look not as appealing, which didn’t really seem to work as they still tried expanding and wanting to expand.

As to which Fern began to play pranks and place (non lethal) traps around in attempts to scare the townspeople and trying to teach his fellow firbolgs the ways of his mischievous nature.

Which had kinda worked as most people living within the town seemed against the idea of building into the forest as most believed it to be haunted now or some form of bad omen to continue building. However the mayor was a bard. This was very bad.

The mayor used his wordplay in order to convince his fellow townspeople that this would be beneficial and help them, etc. and most people had gotten kinda riled from this and now actively wanted to build into this forest.

Fern found out about this and went to one of the mayor's speeches in order to hopefully get a word in and convince him otherwise- instead when he raised his concern he began to mess up his words as Fern’s intense social anxiety kicked in around these people he didn’t know well. While the mayor had made fun of him in front of the people and they all bullied Fern, saying things along the lines of “these people are what we’re up against! What a joke.” and then later began to burn down his forest as a “faster way” to get this shit started.

His group tried to evacuate the forest and gave Fern the task and duty of taking a compass and protecting it no matter what, informing him that this is what the mayor is most likely after for alternative motives.

Despite Fern wanting to stay and help- they pushed him away and Fern obeyed. (he does not know why this mayor wants this compass at the time or why it’s so important)

Upon his journeys he stumbled across a really icky adventuring party who took Fern and sold him black market style, which Fern was auctioned off and the people who bought him were the cult of raven queen.

The cult took him in acting as if they’d saved him from the rest of the “cruel world” etc cult manipulative shit.

The cult however actively used Fern for their sacrificial ceremonies as he was used as a sorta “pure blood” type etc.

He’d been manipulated into thinking this behavior was okay and being fed propaganda about shadar kai as he was told the cult was “saving them from a fate worse than death” and them sacrificing the undevoted shadar kai was a good thing etc. which- yes this cult did actively believe that was the case that they were saving these people.

Fern being in the cult was awful, as everyday was just painful in one way or another but he didn’t know what else to do or where else to go, and it’s not like he could just leave- they’d know. (or at least he was afraid to leave as he was scared something bad would happen)

So the day he met Miles was an interesting one as Miles seemed to shatter all of Ferns views on shadar kai within a few moments. As the two chatted and Fern doubted the cult and what they were telling him, which really messed with him, Miles had snapped him out of it giving him a basic “listen you can stay here and get hurt everyday, or you can team with me and we can escape'' which Fern eventually agreed to, not knowing how trustworthy this guy was and to be fair Miles had the same viewpoint of Fern, but what else did he have to lose? Not like Miles could stay here as he suspected the worst.

(Later when Fern and Miles actually started traveling together though Miles asked some vague questions like if he’d ever met them and such and Fern never really recalled meeting them but only hearing of them and how the cult sees them as some form of saints.)

After the two went their separate ways, Fern finally took a look at his compass and figured out- it wasn’t pointing north at all. So he followed it, hoping it’s lead him back to his old firbolg group. It didn't. Instead it led him into the feywild and into a cottage of a archfey warlock patron fairy named Maryweather and as the two chatted- Maryweather confessed that the compass led straight to her and that she passed it down to an old firbolg community years ago because she liked firbolgs, that simple. But admitted she hadn’t seen any of her warlocks within years.

Fern broke down and told her everything as to which Maryweather said she’d grant him powers in order to help him find his group again but in return- he has to give her a shoutout at the end of whenever he uses his spells like a fucking ad sponsorship. And it’s every time. The twist to this is that he never speaks it in common, always in giant as not many others speak that language and he doesn’t wanna explain why he has to do this and social anxiety etc. but every. Single. Time. its: “hey guys, just wanted to give a big shoutout and thanks to today’s patron: Maryweather, without them, this faerie fire wouldn’t be possible-” because I always have to have some stupid twist to my characters because I think it’s funny.

He spends a bit more time within the feywild and goes around having many different encounters and interactions with different types of fey, before making his way back out into the material plane and in search for his firbolg group, along the way he DOES find where his old forest was but when he gets there, the entire forest is burnt down and the town is completely empty.

He doesn’t know what the fuck happened but this looks like it’s all been abandoned for years.

He hopes he’ll find them again, trying his best to track them down as he wanders countless forests.

And one day, he’s just chilling, doing laundry in the forest at his little campsite. Before Kilo and Miles accidentally ran into him, he didn’t recognize Miles at the time as Miles was unconscious and looking incredibly beaten and bruised.

Fern just so happened at the time to have a health potion on him, (he most definitely stole it from a town over) he gave it to the two and wasn’t planning on traveling with the two or anything but as Miles was recovering-

Kilo trauma dumped on Fern and via trauma dump, Fern found out Miles was a smuggler and Kilo an ex scout- both things that rely on tracking people or getting people place to place, etc. (also that Miles was tortured prior to this and that’s why he was so banged up) So he figured maybe they could help him find his group again. He began traveling with the two and was usually with one or the other as Miles and Kilo, do sometimes travel together and hang out but due to their drastically different ideologies and such, usually aren't.

Kilo and Miles haven’t seen Fern in about five years prior to the current campaign as Fern’s powers started getting unpredictable and tricky, and his communication with Maryweather was completely cut. Also his compass started acting weird too. So he went off on his own to figure out what was happening.

Kilo and Miles have not seen each other a year and a half prior to the campaign- as a year and a half ago the two got into a huge argument over their parents. Kinda like Kilo not understanding why they left him behind with no note and Miles being like “Easy they're shit parents” and Kilo still defending them as a victim of neglect and it being hard for him to accept the truth. (Kilo also was told by Miles during this that they’re cultists and Kilo was in deep disbelief and didn’t get why Miles didn’t tell him sooner)

Miles left the conversation and went off to smuggle shit, and Miles was gone for quite some time so Kilo went to the assumption either something happened or Miles abandoned him.

He went out and tracked him down and Kilo found that Miles got in trouble and was physically paying the price of his actions- as Kilo tried to intervene, he had also gotten hurt. Miles blacked out after this and was left on the side of the road- incredibly banged up and left for dead. He’s been trying to find Kilo ever since. Reason why he was getting beaten up was because he accidentally smuggled a mimic instead of like I dunno some alcohol or something.

Oh yeah Fern is Irish and Kilo is British.

(Firbolgs come from Irish folklore originally and Kilo is British because.. kilometers… I think I’m funny.)

Also Fern’s main use of communication is writing, nodding or shaking his head, using small hand gestures or if he’s with someone he trusts he’ll usually whisper something to them to tell another person they’re talking with.

Kilo also prefers speaking through a situation and trying to resolve it rather than getting physical but he can and will beat someone up if needed.

Lots of aspec headcanons for this one. But also heads up I have multiple versions of headcanons for most of these characters so it’s more of a “sometimes they are, sometimes they aren’t” kind of thing. Nothing on here is set in stone, some I just have stronger opinions about that others.

Aizawa is usually trans and always gay and, depending on how I’m feeling on any given day, either demi or asexual

Someone on here said that Sero has strong “aroace that everyone goes to for romantic advice” energy and you know what, they’re right. Also usually trans.

Hagakure is asexual biromantic. Sometimes she’s trans.

Ojiro is demisexual heteroromantic and didn’t figure it out until he and Hagakure had been dating for years. There’s probably something gender going on for him too but he doesn’t really care enough to put any energy into figuring it out.

Tokoyami is aroace

Shinsou is sometimes ace or demiace. He’s purple-coded it’s required by law. Also biromantic and sometimes trans.

Jirou is grey-ace, non-binary (she/they), demiromantic with a preference for girls.

Asui and Midoriya, similarly to shinsou and jirou, are green and thus are contractually obligated to be somewhere in the aromatic spectrum. I think both of them are greyro. Asui is a genderfluid lesbian and midoriya is classic feral bi disaster.

His headquarters also doubles as a safe space for anyone who needs it; he loves his community and does what he can to give back. I think he told his dad he was trans when he was still alive, and although he wasn’t sure what to think at first, he was very supportive (as was his mother and sister) and Flegel was able to get on puberty blockers and then eventually transition. He adores his husband and their son Sullivan (who is also a trans man, which is something they bond over) 💙 Colt - Trans gay guy who uses He/him! - As the eldest of the batch of Warrior cadets he was a part of, Udo, Zofia, Gabi and Falco regarded him as a role model. He had been out as a trans guy for a few years at that point, which led to a bond between himself and Gabi Braun, who had come out to her cousin Reiner when they were younger that she was a trans girl. Even now they’re still very close, as are their children. His family was very supportive, and when Falco called him “brother” for the first time he probably bawled like a baby. He’s very family-oriented, and when he isn’t busy with work or coaching baseball he’s a mentor for LGBTQ+ kids at the Reeves Company support group :]

I’m not entirely sure what Niccolo's backstory should be, but perhaps his family wasn’t as supportive as they should've been, so he left home and found a new one in the cooking industry. Fell in love with Sasha first but after being a part of her family with Connie as their boyfriend, he fell for both. Has grown softer with age, and probably helps tutor other young and upcoming chefs :] Has yet to reconnect with his parents, but little does he know that they’ve kept newspaper clippings of their son’s successes and, while too ashamed to reach out, are so incredibly proud of him 💙 Connie - Polyamorous cis pan dude who uses He/him! Still a goofball even into adulthood, lover of practical jokes and his family. He and Sasha have entertained various partners over the years prior to Niccolo (a notable example being Jean and Marco, the five of them, now including Niccolo, still get together every so often), but something about Niccolo just...fit right with them. I’ve been wanting to draw or write out my ‘future’ Bottom ideas for a while but haven’t gotten around to it. So here’s a long post of some head canons and a general story line of them vaguely developing as people at some point set after the live shows. If anything this is just sort of my personal AU for the characters getting together. Mostly focused on the progression of Richie and Eddies relationship and my thoughts on both of them being trans

- They’re both trans, (a lot of Ades characters give me trans dudes vibes but that is 70% me wanting to time travel and body swap w the man) Eddie is a bi trans dude (who medically transitioned young, but is not necessarily out as either) and Richie is a closeted/repressed bi trans woman who begins to come to terms w it during the whole island era

- Richie is also intersex, which while yeah is sort of canon in a mean way, is sort of important to me for the character 🤭 However she is not aware of the fact

- Eddie is dyslexic and has ADHD which both contribute to him struggling on and off (which was really just a gag they went with when funny) with reading/writing depending on how well he can focus on it at any given time (example: the Edies Bra sign vs the grave stone). I am not even going to attempt to say what is going on w Richie but the woman is a mess of unresolved issues and trauma complications

- After everything they go through in the live shows they do somehow make it back to the flat which is unexplainably the exact way they left it.

- Every single joke about Richie going off and fucking dudes from the live show is taken as fact. It is the most poorly kept secret amongst the cast. They literally do not talk about it unless Eddie is trying to make a point or piss off Richie

- Eventually Eddie IS trying to piss off Richie and does bring up everything about her sex life and the clothes, and... well everything else. After a ridiculous fight it somehow turns into an almost semi-serious conversation. Eddie makes the assumption that Richie is gay and Richie counters with the fact that she is genuinely interested in women but it’s a hell of a lot easier to get attention from specific types of men. Gets some wheels turning in both of their heads

- Personality wise they never really calm down, but they do start to slow down a little bit as it takes them longer and longer to recover from their fights. Obviously there is still the odd dart to the forehead or gentle push down the stairs but the ridiculous games and completions they make up take center stage

- they get weed at some point (Dave Hedgehog and Spudgun seems like a feasible source, because let’s be honest if Richie and Eddie tried to buy weed it would not work) that leads to all sorts of embarrassment because Eddie gets crossfaded as all get out and starts hitting on Richie. Which while having a precedent in their history (I mean, the first episode gives us that right away) takes on a new sort of meaning once the concept of bisexuality has been rolling around in their heads. Nothing particularly saucy happens at this point Bc they are high, drunk, and old but all of the actual acknowledgement of feelings start to really develop after this point

- in an attempt to do something with her time Richie picks up sewing and picks up where she left off with the wrap skirt and rubber underwear she made on the island. Starts to really develop the little wardrobe she wears when she’s alone. It’s a mix of the same awful button up shirts she always wears and some dresses and skirts along with a couple pairs of sexier (for Richie at least) under garments

- eventually Eddie comes home while Richie is still in her feminine clothing. Eddies Reaction is different from the first time he saw her dressed up that way since now there is a precedent. Eddies approach is much more “playful teasing” and fake surprise than it was previously.

- Slowly Richie starts dressing up around the flat more and more often as opposed to just when alone. Eddie ramps up with the pet names and husband/house wife dynamic they already had going on.

- THE MOMENT is when Eddie is leaving the flat to go to the bar and there is an ‘accidental’ kiss on the cheek along with his usual good byes. Eddie realizes what has happened immediately and bolts before Richie can say anything. Richie has a moment of “teehee that was nice” still in her little fucking house wife head space before it catches up w her.

- Richie panics, paces around the flat, gets changed like 8 times, cooks dinner, throws it away, takes it out of the trash, paces more, breaks like 8 things, and essentially just fluctuates between “Ooo Eddie fancies me” to “oh fuck the bastard is making fun of me again” to “it was an accident and Eddie is going to make it into a fight” back to “ooo Eddie fancies Me~”

- eventually Eddie comes home, pissed to hell and back way later than he’d normally come home. Richies passed out on the couch. Eddie wakes her up by pushing her over on the couch so he can sit. Eddie says something along the lines of “I’m fucking drunk so I’m only going to say this one” before saying some incomprehensible drunken rambling and pulling Richie into an awkward full kiss. It’s a nice moment for maybe about 5 seconds before he stands up again, pulls a pint out of his jacket, chugs it and says something about drunkenly passing out before doing just that across the coffee table.

- Richie just sort of gawks at Eddie sleeping across the table before giddily tossing a blanket over him and heading off to actually go to bed.

- relationship wise this really just sort of introduces a sexual/physical dynamic to their relation while ramping up their camp version of domestic life

- it’s Spudgun and Dave Hedgehog who actually say something to Eddie about it. They’ve always been in on the “oh look, it’s Eddies terrifying wife” thing. Probably only actually say something about it after the 2nd or 3rd actual display of physical affection they witness. It’s more of one of them asking Eddie if Richie really is his wife (in that half aware sort of way they observe things). This alone doesn’t change much, but it does takes a lot to get through to any of these repressed bastards

- Richie grows accustomed to the more feminine/soft pet names that Eddie uses for her. At one point Eddie uses more traditionally masculine terms which sets off “oh actually I am not a fan of that” in Richies head and leads her to asking Eddie to not refer to her that way. Leads to an awkward half coming out on Richies part. Eddie does genuinely switch up how he refers to Richie at this point and her gender just sort of becomes an silent fact that they both respect. Everyone else sort of knows them as those weirdos who have some sort of common law marriage going on and it’s not really questioned. This is the point where Richie starts to earnestly medically transition without really saying to much about, canonically she has been on estrogen pills before (even if it was a ‘mistake’)

- End game is essentially just them being casual about their identities and relationships in a unspoken sort of “well that’s just how it is” way that naturally sort of bleeds into a the other aspects of their lives.

- Additional note on Eddie being trans: Richie is already vaguely aware of this fact Bc obviously they’ve been seen what the other is working with at one point or another but the fact that she is unaware that she herself is intersex and has a skewed sort of idea about genitals and peoples bodies Richie genuinely does not think about it all too much. Eddie assumes that she knows, especially as they get older and casually refers to being trans (in my mind probably during the entire “Edwina” disguise thing. I imagine Eddie wearing the dress came down to the clothing size and some off hand comment about him “having experience”, which is total shit Bc even before he transitioned Eddie never presented that way). That’s probably around the point that things start to click in Richies head about Eddies identity and she starts comparing and contrasting Eddie to other ppl and such.

Here's two little things you should learn: no comunity is a monolith (there are intersex people who say being intersex IS an LGBT identity, and I welcome them, specifically, as part of the comunity) and two different comunities can get sort of "combined" due to similar experiences and overlaping members (plenty of intersex people are trans, bi, pan, ace...)

And I really wanna know what the fuck you mean by "You don't want same sex attracted people to have their own comunity". Are you aware that some trans people are straight? Are you aware that asexuality and aromanticism are a thing AND are part of the LGBT+ comunity? Are you aware that having one larger comunity that includes as many people as possible doesn't stop anyone from forming smaller comunities within a comunity?

If someone tells me they're LGBT+ (like people identify solely as queer) I believe and accept them. If someone tells me they're not LGBT+, but face some similar issues (like polyamorous straight, cis people who cannot get married and depending on the laws can even be legally punished) I say our comunities should help each other out. Intersex people fit BOTH groups, and the overlap between Intersex and LGBT+ has been around for a loooooong time.

The reason why I made a post supporting the right of intersex people to say they're part the LGBT+ comunity is because someone I love is intersex and had been dealing with a lot of prejudice on what should be a safe space for them. I don't see how that's a bad thing.

If you don't consider yourself LGBT+, I totally respect that. But it doesn't mean you can pretend your experience is the "correct" one, and it doesn't give you the right to call me a bigot. Next time, try not using big words you don't know the meaning of and try not to ignore larger social and historical contexts.

Some potentially controversial headcanons about sexuality and gender in atla

Ok so I have some headcanons about gender and sexuality in the atlaverse that may controdict some aspects of canon as well as many other's headcanons but I feel go pretty inline with the nations, either based on their inspo country's history or the feel I get from the nations in canon culture. If you disagree that's totally chill I just wanna get my thoughts out there to see who else agrees.

So with that let's begin:

Air nomads

This I think everyone agrees on that the air nomads didn't give a shit about gender or sexuality. Love is love and gender is an illusion.

They also were very pro poly relationships

However, cause of the whole communally raising children thing that's a part of canon I don't think all the temples really had a concept of marriage and some groups may have actually given you odd looks if you wanted to be exclusive with someone

But the general 'let it be' culture meant you really wouldn't get any widespread social grief on the issue just maybe have a few arguments with friends or maybe a partner that wasn't used to being exclusive or was used to being exclusive and you weren't, and you veritably weren't going to be ostracized for your sexuality or preferences in a relationship. It's a domestic issue rather than a social justice one.

Air nomads were by far the most accepting of asexuality and aromaticism.

Water tribe

I actually think things very between the north and the south a lot due to their seperation, but a commonality between them is their strong sense of gender roles and other ridged segregations in gender like the whole waterbending thing.

That being said, transness is very much accepted but there are specific ceremonies for transitioning and coming out to the tribe, and it can mean losing some privileges you had from the gender you were assigned at birth.

There's also a third non-binary gender that has its own specific ceremony. This circumvented a lot of rules about who could learn what type of waterbending, particularly up north but also carried a few unique social responsibilities like officiating weddings but could also strip you of some priviledges from your initially assigned gender, such as paticipation in specific gendered rituals such as women's cerimonies or men's cerimonies.

Those members had their own unique cerimonies and celibrations however.

In the northern watertribe specifically homosexuality is very much accepted but under the current cheiftan unions of politics like Yue's will almost always come before unions of love, so gay individuals can sadly be forced into hetero relationships via arranged mairrage, with the only concessions being that they can take on a single same sex lover outside of the union.

The absoluteness of the arranged mairrage rules can change based on who is in charge however.

Biphobia has had a history of being a problem in the water tribes as they have a huge emphasis on separation and opposites in their culture as their two biggest spirits represent yin and yang. Lesbians were long considered favored by tui and gay men favored by la, as if they were living symbols of the spirits.

There was discourse as to how bi and pan people fit into this model, some even horribly suggesting they were abandoned by the spirits, but the current concesus among spiritual experts and elders is they are actually a symbol of tui and la's love for eachother and thus favored by both.

The southern water tribe has always been laxer about the gender specific stuff and never had the arranged mairrage rules.

It was always much smaller however so LGBT individuals were less common. This often made it harder for homosexual individuals to find romantic love as there were just fewer fellow LGBT people that were avalible.

So if you came out as gay/bi/pan/lesbian to the tribe it was often the tradition to complete your ice dodging cerimony soon after and then become a sailor for at least three years to try and find romance while trading goods with the other nations if you didn't have a partner already.

A majority of southern tribe fishermen/women as a result were LGBT. Being a full-time fisherman is now a euphamism for being a lonely gay person.

Southern watertribe mermaid tales were almost always very gay as a result.

Unfortunately due to the southern watertribe's culture and traditions being decimated by the firenation's raids, a lot of LGBT culture in the southern tribe was also lost.

They're still pretty accepting but because of the dwindled population of the southern tribe and the fact that LGBT people tend to only make up 1-10% of an average population in the real world, it's rare for a gay individual to be born into the southern tribe, usually only once every generation now, if they realize they are gay to begin with.

As a result of that and the fact that bringing it up generally brings up the fact that the firenation destroyed what nice things they had, it's often not talked about outside of between elders mourning better times, which has made it even harder for some individuals to even realize they are LGBT to begin with.

The swamp benders are mostly men who wear leaf loin cloths they gay af and we're probs established by southern watertribe gays and bis that got lost in their travels and decided to settle down in the swamp, eventually attracting the attention of other lgbt earth kingdom people who decided to live with them.

Earth Kingdom

There's a huge divide among how it's treated among peasents and aristocracy

Peasents grew up on stories of past earth kings with many lovers, including several gay ones

So depending on where you live homosexuality is either considered something romantic of fairy-tales or celibrated as something unique and uncommon

In some places where people have more spirituality, some joke that gay people were royals in their past lives.

The earth kingdom is big tho, so some small towns can be homophobic but it's much rarer and usually because they were established by homophobes who were chased from areas that were very anti homophobia.

Fetishization of homosexuality can happen but it's again depending on where you are.

The earth kingdom is also very accepting of asexuality but there are stereotypes such as asexuals usually becoming gurus.

In aristocracy things are a bit different

Homosexuality is still pretty accepted but due to how prevalent arrange mairrages are it's heavily assosiated with affairs and running away from family obligations and thus it's a bit taboo to speak publicly about it in high society.

Lesbianism specifically cause China, what the earth kingdom is based on, has a long history of writing off women's feelings.

The upper crust of Ba Sing Se, despite lots of historically gay earth kings, has a big homophobia issue thanks to the Dai Lee slowly becoming corrupted after Kyoshi died.

Long Feng particularly had a hand in making talking about gay stuff practically off the table or seen as only something for filthy commoners.

Transgenderism, again cause of China historically treating women like shit, is a subject of a lot of discourse in the Earth kingdom, although there are no legal issues with being transgender and one can have their passports changed in certian cities and towns to reflect their gender identity if they move there, but only in those specific towns.

Omashu is one of them and is extremely pro trans and in general pro LGBT even among the aristocracy, infact king Bumi in his first year of rule established specific holidays for celibrating trans people, gay men, lesbians, asexuals, bisexuals, agender people, and any other gender or sexual identity Bumi knew about.

He has added to the list since. Whenever he finds out about a new gender identity or sexuality he sets the day he found out as a day for a feats next year celibrating it.

This is why there are so many feasts in omashu.

He also often officiates gay weddings himself because according to him "gay weddings are the most interesting and creative. They all have mad geniuses for their wedding planners I tell ya"

Tbh he will randomly show up to any wedding in his city cause he loves parties but he will specifically officiate gay ones.

The Fire Nation

Ok this is where some people may get pissed cause I disagree that the firenation is horribly homophobic

I know it was stated by one of the creators that the firenation has anti gay laws thanks to Sozin but Japan had a loooooong history of celibrating gay stuff prior to westernization and the firenation is based off of Japan. Also kinda headcanon Sozin as having a thing for Roku that fell apart with the whole war bs.

So Sozin never imo put into place any homophobic laws aside from banning gay writings and plays within the palace out of bitterness of having Roku betray him and just didn't want to have anything around him that would remind him of him. Dude got so mopey over it he neglected his wife and children a lot, despite the whole thing being 100% his fault.

Azulon on the other hand was a homophobic son of a bitch and put a lot of anti gay and trans laws into effect. While none outlawed same sex relations, they included ones that allowed people to get away with firing people or harming people for being LGBT.

Ozai was also extremely homophobic.

But before all this the fire nation was practically a gay paradise. Fire is the element of passion, and so gay sex and relationships were considered for a long time just as normal as heterosexual relationships.

There were festivals and holidays celibrating gay lovers, lots of LGBT writing and art, and many many plays on the subject

There were several folk stories of Agni the sun spirit coming down to earth to meet his male human lovers, including one that explained why we have night and day. (Tui introduced Agni to one of the volcano spirit's sons so that she may rule the night in peace without his constant incercession and annoying boastfulness)

Soldiers were pretty much expected to have a gay relationship with one of their brothers in arms if they were single to increase the loyalty among troops.

The firenation was the only nation where arranged mairrages could be nullified instantly on the grounds that one of the individuals involved was gay, unless you were the firelord and that was only because it was the firelord's duty to produce at least one heir to continue the linage, so it was seen as the firelord's sacrifice to his or her people to take up at least one opposite sexed partner. Romantic affairs were expected and understood in such situations however so long as there was already an heir to the throne born.

Families could even be punished with jail time for knowingly forcing their gay children into heterosexual relationships.

Gay couples could adopt children too and denying one on the grounds of being gay would be grounds for removal of your position in child care and being blacklisted.

There were still homophobes but homophobia was squashed a lot

Azulon managed to "justify" the cultural shift and changes to laws by having newspapers publishing fake news about pedophilia cases being linked to homosexuality as well as other stories linking homosexuality to degenerate acts.

He also used the culture of honor and family loyalty to shame gay children for ending their parent's bloodlines and claiming gay individuals were less likely to take care of their parents in their old age. And that trans children dishonored their parents by rejecting their "birth gender"

He even had certian folk stories changed to be heterosexual

This allowed homophobia and transphobia to spred in the firenation

However many individual towns held onto their pro LGBT roots and still published and performed gay literary works and plays.

And azulon and ozai were unable to remove many nonheteronormative traditions, such as guy friends being extremely physically affectionate, more so than with their girl counterparts.

In some areas it's still customary to greet close male friends with platonic kisses on the cheek

Zuko repealed many of the old laws established by his father and grandfather almost immediately, and reestablished many old holidays and protections for LGBT individuals.

Fixing the damage is still taking time, but with a corrected history of the firenation being now taught in classes thanks to zuko and aang, things are getting back to the way they once were slowly.

Hope comes from a very big family - she has three sisters and three brothers, and she's the youngest of the bunch. kind of chaotic with so many people at home, so she's been out and about the neighbourhood and the woods ever since she was little

Lyall has an older sister, but they're not really that friendly. they are friends, it's just usually they do their own thing without interacting much

they met when they were in their young teens and Lyall hated Hope at first

she was a bit of a troublemaker, she had a skateboard, she was bold and very much out there. Lyall was a quiet boy who very much kept to himself and he didn't appreciate the noise that came with her

ofc that didn't last long. sooner rather than later Lyall would look forward to that noisy girl driving on the pavement right below his window. and Hope loved to throw pebbles at his window just to annoy him

they started dating when Hope was 16 and Lyall 15, and they had Remus about a year, year and a half after that (shit happens, whoops)

Hope actually didn't know Lyall is a wizard until she was pregnant. he kind of panicked and whatnot. she took it well tho (and she took advantage of him having magic, of course. she came to really love that just a flick of a wand did the dishes)

despite being very young parents without much of a plan, Hope was very optimistic about the situation. they lived at Lyall's parents (Hope's family wasn't very happy about her having a baby without being married. they'd only get around when Remus is a couple years old) and yeah it was a bit cramped and a bit confusing, but they were happy together

Lyall took a job with the ministry, and Hope started studying magic theory. not something muggles would usually do, but she couldn't find anything better to do and she didn't just want to sit at home and take care of the baby

and she was quickly very brilliant and the theoretical aspect of magic. Lyall got her books, and was her lab rat in case she needed someone with magic to test her theories, but she was really good at understanding everything. she became very successful at spell creation and modification - kind of a private profession, people would come to her if they needed her services, you know the deal

they had a little secluded cabin in the woods. not that much space, but it was cosy. they had enough money to pay the bills, they weren't exactly Comfortable, but it's not like they cared. they had each other, and that was important

any money to spare, they'd put away for when Remus would be older

Lyall isn't really that good at expressing emotions. he's very much what boys were brought up to be - stern, quiet, doesn't know how to express positive feelings or love. He'd take care of Remus when Remus was a baby, yeah, but Remus would run to Hope first if needed a hug or cuddles or whatnot

but still, he's not a bad dad, he's doing his best ok. he sometimes took Remus to the ministry with him to show him around, and he was always the one to check for any monsters in the closet or under the bed. After the werewolf incident, Remus was afraid of the dark, so Lyall made him a little handmade magical lap (basically lumos in a little cute jar - & Remus added some glitter in there too)

and of course, no matter what, they both really love Remus, he's their pride and joy, despite any hardships

Hope got a motorbike from one of her siblings when Remus is around 5 years old. she loves tinkering with it, riding it (Remus and Lyall were both scared of it) - her dad is a mechanic so she loves cars and bikes. said bike will, one day, be given to a certain boyfriend of Rem's 🤔

Lyall was taught how to knit and sew by his mother and sister, so he's usually the one to fix or alter clothes. (and he'd make baby clothes for Remus sometimes, as a side project)

Hope and Remus are basically best friends. they live in the middle of nowhere so Remus has no one to talk to but his parents, so if he's not out in the woods, he'll be with his mum and dad. when it comes to Lyall, their little activity to do together is being in the woods and trying to catch fairies (usually frogs, but sometimes they'd spot some fun magical creatures)

Lyall is much more distressed about Remus going to Hogwarts than Hope is. the werewolf thing and whatnot, and he's worried Remus won't make friends, and also Remus is a part of their life and now the house will be so quiet and sad.

Remus sends them both letters, though. Hope answers for them both but Lyall keeps Rem's letters and rereads them a lot, especially during the fulls

and they're still quite young, so they also travel a bit when Remus is at school. ofc there's not much money to travel to exotic places, but even just taking hiking trips around the country, or walking through the woods

they buy a dog when Remus moves out. it's huge and white, it sheds like crazy, it barks a lot, but at least it helps a little with the void that is their son being an adult

(the next bit is more specific to my personal rem hcs - trans bi remus - so this is just free real estate for those who like that)

they don't really bat an eye when, after second year, Remus comes home with shorter hair - it's not quite down to his shoulders, but almost there. Remus very excitedly tells them about his friend, Lily who helped cut it. then he asks to be taken to the barber and get it cut shorter - "like a boy's". they don't mind either, it's just hair

Remus never grows his hair long again, and after he's back home before 4th year, he tells them everything. says he doesn't like his old name, that Remus is what he wants to be called, that he doesn't want the girls' uniform or the summer dresses.

Lyall is a bit confused at first - he slips sometimes, but he tries his best. and Hope smacks him if he happens to use the wrong name

Hope goes all out, ofc, she's just that kind of person. within a few weeks, Remus's name is officially changed, all of his clothes are replaced (most of his old ones, he gives to Lily). no matter what, she wants her boy to feel loved at home

Remus dates Lily in sixth year - Hope and Lyall can't be happier. they've both met her plenty of times, she's a lovely girl, would make an excellent daughter in law, all that. sometimes, before going to sleep, they'll jokingly talk about little ginger grandkids

in seventh year, though, Remus dates a boy. Sirius Black, who has long hair and dresses like a punk and has a tattoo and bulky combat boots. he's loud and brash and walks around with far too much confidence in his step

Lyall doesn't like him

and Hope adores him

Sirius, sooner than later, becomes a permanent addition to their little family. Remus makes it clear that they're together for the long run. Lyall doesn't like him any more than at first, but he tolerates him. Hope treats him as her second son, gives him her old bike, jokes about marriage to Remus any occasion she gets

there's plenty of times Hope and Lyall will sit in the lounge, or the kitchen, or talk before bed, and share their worries about Remus. there's just so many hardships for this boy. his identity, being a werewolf, and now dating another man. they sometimes wish there could be something to do to protect him from the world. whisk him away to their little cabin, where no one can hurt him again

but they can't do that. so they just try to be a steady support for him, no matter what he decides to do or who he is

also as much as Lyall doesn't like Sirius - he's enamoured when him and Remus have kids. Sirius has good genes, the babies are adorable with their bushy black hair and Remus freckles and stubborn little chubby faces. you can't not love them

hey mod steel, I’m aroace and agree with the points that have been made about the lack of representation for the lesbian flag in particular especially in regards to the aro/ace flags in previous litters, but your post about “room for discussion of exclusion of certain identities” just gutted me. are you exclus towards aro/ace people? please be willing to answer.

I don't consider myself to be an exclusionist or an inclusionist. I think the whole discussion is actually pretty nuanced. My personal belief falls into thinking more that ace/aro people would benefit from having their own community and spaces. This isn't to say that there cant be any ace/aro people in the lgbt community, because that's literally just not how intersecting identities function. 

I think the challenges lgbt people face are different than those of ace/aro people, and this effects the goals of each general identity group as well. Hence, why I think everyone would be better off if ace/aro people had their own community.

Homophobia and transphobia are intrinsically intertwined in a lot of places, as to why most places have their sga and trans communities worked into one. This is seen a lot with legal matters, as, for example, visibly non straight cisgender people being harassed and kicked out of bathrooms due to antitransgender bathroom bills. Marriage laws preventing same sex marriages have widely affected transgender people of all sexualities. Aphobia isn't intertwined with either of these things, and as its own space would then be able to pursue its own goals. 

The only evidence i can find of legal asexual discrimination is the 2015 russian driving law which mainly targets transgender people. honestly I think its a major mistranslation. I've seen a lot of people use a quote from The Association of Advocates of Russia for Rights that says the law bans from driving "all transgender people, bi-gender, asexual, transvestites, cross-dressers and people who need gender correction (surgery)." and I can't find any information about this association outside of this specific quote. That quote seems to be the only source for the russian law targeting asexual people directly. I really want yall to notice the fact that for some reason asexual is grouped in with “transvestites” and “people who need gender correction surgery” and “bi-gender”. Based on the general gender/sex focused language of the quote, I highly doubly that this is actually about asexuality as known by americans. Either this was some mistranslation of a russian term for “agender”, or they were actually referring to intersex people through mistranslations regarding “asexual reproduction” and specifically the russian term for “hermaphrodite” (I asked someone who speaks russian about this btw, not pulling it out of my ass). If anyone can find me some original sources for this, like from the association itself, id appreciate seeing them.

This isnt to say asexual people don't face any discrimination at all, just that they don't seem to have legal forms of discrimination directly targeting them anywhere in the world. However, transgender and sga people do face legal discrimination and oppression. I don't feel I need to explain this one. 

This large difference in the forms of oppression and discrimination the two groups face also really impacts how each group should then address and work to undo these forms of oppression and discrimination, and I think its ultimately far worse for both lgbt people and ace/aro people to be in seemingly one group working against these issues. I'm not out here trying to attack ace/aro people for existing. They're real people with real struggles, but I think there's just a disconnect between the community goals.

At the end of the day I realize I'm just some dude and my opinions don't have much effect on the world at large. I'm active in lgbt organizations. I'm active in an organization focused on transgender and intersex people. I'm active in real world shit so I generally don't spend energy on trying to push for these large scale community changes. They probably wont happen and I've accepted that. I just want to be able to legally change my name, not have to worry about the costs of medically transitioning, and not have to worry about the safety of the people I love.

Beetlejuice OC Week! I’m using my sequel story kid Luna, Lydia’s daughter and Beetlejuice’s new BFF~ The Prompt was “Pride”

I had fun with this one! First is Lydia and Daniel; when I was first trying to come up with his design and Lydia’s grown-up look, I took a moment to step back and noticed that the color schemes for them were pretty much the bi and trans flags, and I was like “Yep, they’re bi and trans. This is law”. Daniel is from Hawaii, he and Lydia met when she went there on vacation during college to take nature pictures. They didn’t date right away because of the long-distance factor, so they just mutually pined for each other for a couple of years, and then started dating when Lydia was done with college. They both took a romantic road-trip together, and eventually got married. Before getting married, they both fretted and fussed internally on how to explain to the person they loved that they were ace... and then it was all stress over nothing, because they BOTH are, and they had a good chuckle over it (still very affectionate, physically intimate, and passionately in love with each other. they both just didn’t want to disappoint the other in some way, and it turned out to be a total non-issue) 

Next is Luna and her girlfriend, two tiny lesbians, and one is a trans girl! (I basically imagined “what if Claire wasn’t horrible and annoying?” and made a character out of that. not literally Claire obviously, but a preppy/cutsey girl Luna goes to school with, and they eventually start dating) Her name is Dawn, and that means these two have matching sun/moon names, and I’m sorry, but it is so adorable I almost can’t stand it. Luna is 13, and Dawn is 12, so they aren’t doing any serious dating yet, but they like each other very much. They hang out often, hold hands, hug, and share a few kisses on the cheek~ If this got to be a real re-boot of the cartoon show, we’d see them go from friends, to cute crushes, finally dating, and being girlfriends. Dawn isn’t fully aware of all the spooky stuff in Luna’s life, but as the years go by, Luna will gradually introduce her to it (Beetlejuice has technically met Dawn in some of his various “human disguises”, and he enjoys teasing Luna about her girlfriend... but he also thinks they’re a cute couple, and goes out of his way to make sure they aren’t bothered on their dates)

We were robbed of no Otho in the original cartoon show, and I demand this be fixed! He gets to show up a lot, another extra “uncle” for Luna, he’s always talking about some new job adventure he’s part of (ranging from being a wedding planner to a butterfly farmer to a truck driver... he literally does everything, no matter how nonsensical or normal). He also gets to have plenty of boyfriends, and at some point perhaps we’d see him settle down with somebody. He always wears interesting outfits, and for this picture he’s got an embroidered jacket with rainbow colors~

Finally, here is Beetlejuice... and you KNOW he ain’t straight! You might get a headache trying to properly describe everything he has going on, but here I imagined; nonbinary, genderfluid, pan, polyam. Basically, he flirts all over the place (perhaps eventually I’ll give him some actual love interests who stick around...)
