Until the End (Levi x Reader)- Chapter 18
[On the Run]
_____ A/N: Posted on Wattpad (@CLARE_875) but also decided to post here :)
Summary:
"You can push me away, but I will still fight by you, and I will still follow you… until the end."
The ever-so-stoic Levi Ackerman has only ever known the terrors that living in a cruel world could bring. This all changed one fateful day when he encountered [y/n]; a girl renowned for her looks and abnormal speed. As they escape the confines of the Underground together, they soon discover that freedom doesn't come easy in a world full of Titans. As they rise through the ranks, [y/n] becomes known as "Humanity's Angel", a beacon of hope to humanity as she melts the walls Levi had built around his heart. However, she has her secrets too, and a dark past that might just threaten to pull them apart.
The storyline and characters of Attack on Titan do NOT belong to me, but all to Hajime Isayama; however, I do own this story, and all that occurs disparate to that storyline.
[Series Masterlist] [Chapter Seventeen] <--> [Chapter Nineteen]
_____
Warnings: Canonical Violence, Descriptions of Torture, Injuries
You sit in a darkened room, changing out of your torn shirt before replacing it with a new one, glad to see that the cut on your arm was only shallow and had already healed into a scar. The scratch along your cheek had faded the same way as you grabbed some alcohol and a cloth, gently dabbing away at the remaining blood. We were now in a hideout in the woods, a bit away from Trost. In the aftermath of Eren and Historia getting abducted, we interrogated Dimo Reeves, a merchant who led the Reeves Company. He was the man who had captured Jean and Armin, mistaking them for Eren and Historia.
In the integration, we learned that he was forced to help the Military Police as his life and his son's life were put on the line. Levi has used this as leverage, with the proposal that in exchange for their support, we would provide protection and help in the rebuilding of Trost. He had agreed. Dimo and his son Flegel had gone and retrieved two Interior Military Police, Ralph and Sannes, who were primarily responsible for the torture and death of Pastor Nick. They had lured them here in the guise that he knew of Levi's location. Now, they were each locked in a cellar in the basement.
You sigh, stretching above your head in exhaustion; it was going to be another long night. Just as you go to the door of the room, however, it opens, and Levi walks in. He looks up in surprise, not thinking you would be present. You examined his face, and you were glad to see the cut on his forehead was clean and had stopped bleeding. "Hey, there you are [y/n]," he says as his sharp eyes skim your face, landing on the healing scar on your cheek. "Yeah, sorry to keep you waiting, Levi," you say, walking towards him, not missing the brief flash of conflict that lies deep in his eyes. "Are you okay?" you ask, concerned. If someone else had looked at him, he would have seemed like he had the same bored look he had always had. But after knowing him for so long, you could notice the slight change in expression no matter how much he tried to act nonchalant.
He looked up at you, eyes stormy and tense before he sighed. "Nothing," he muttered before his face soured. "Just seeing the old man again..." you nodded, seeing the hatred burning in his eyes. You reached up to touch his face, causing him to look up. "That piece of shit, saying all those damn things about you," Levi gritted his teeth at the memory. You smile at him, shaking your head, "I don't mind, Levi. It doesn't faze me-" Levi cut you off, "I mind," he said, frowning. You look up to see his sharp eyes and the dull light of the moon reflecting off of them. You sigh, "I don't blame you, Levi," you continue when you see the conflict in his eyes. "I was just surprised he actually knew who I was. I guess when he left the Underground, he didn't leave for good." You remember Kenny's words that he had visited; it made you shiver, thinking he was unknowingly watching the both of you in the Underground.
You let your hands fall to his hands as you squeeze them tightly. "I'm going to have to start torturing the damn Military Police soon," Levi mutters as you remember back to the two men captured beneath us. You let out an emotionless laugh at his words and hum back in reply. "You don't have to watch, you know," he says, eyes darkening, no doubt thinking of the men in the basement too. You smile before moving forward and capturing his lips briefly, his stare now soft. "I know."
.....
You lean against the wall as you see Levi tugging at his pair of gloves, ready to continue torturing the man, Sannes, in front of you; he had been at it for ages. Suddenly, you heard a door slam, and you turned, startled, only to see it was Hange who had barged their way in. "Sorry, I'm late! You're still going at it?" Levi turns, looking at Hange with a bored look in his eyes. "Yeah, I'm pretty new to this." Hange steps forward towards the man confined to his chair, "Sannes! You should know I'm also a novice at human torture, so please bear with me!" You sigh at their disturbing words, knowing that despite Levi's constant annoyance at Hange, they complimented each other in a horrifying way. Hange reaches for some tools that were laid out before getting ready.
"Wait! What do you even want!? Who the hell tortures without asking questions?!" Levi looks up at that. "Oh, right... We do have some questions for you." You tense at the tone of his words. "Where are Eren and Historia? Why are you after Historia? What's the Reiss Family?" Hange doesn't even give him a second to answer as they scream out, "Too slow! Can't you see that we're in a hurry!?" They then yank down with a metal tool and grab a fingernail on his left hand before peeling it off. You don't know what to feel as you see them continue to torture Sannes and hear him wail. Just remind me never to get on Hange's bad side...
Hange continues to rip fingernails off until all five on his hand are gone. You resist the urge to wince as you continue to observe. "Sorry, I can't peel nails as well as you," Hange muttered to Sannes. "Just how many did you peel to get so good?" You can hear the darkness in their voice. "Too many to count," the man replies. "Within these cramped walls, do you know why war has never broken out? It's because the First Interior Squad dirtied our hands to protect the peace." Sannes looks up, face bloodied and eyes haunted. "A teacher too smart for their own good... A stupid couple who tried to fly... A whore from some ranch in the sticks... Humanity has only made it this far because we erased them!" He shouts out, tears brimming in one eye as the other remains closed thanks to the bruise from Levi's fist.
"You should be thanking us! I've never seen anyone get more pleasure out of torture than you guys! You're monsters! But I'm not even afraid. I... I have... I have the King, I... I believe in the King and peace in the walls. That all the things we've done were justified... But... To think it hurts this much... Go on and torture me to death already. That's all I ever did with this blood-stained life of mine." You grip your arms tightly at his words and silence envelops us. "Time for a break," Levi mutters tiredly as you walk to his side and out the door. "That's troubling... I'm beginning to feel sorry for him." Hange says from behind. You close the door but open a small gap once they are through.
You look up to see Levi and Hange walk with Ralph, the other man we captured. A knife pushed to his side. "You're pathetic. It only took one nail to make you talk." Levi tells the man, "Sannes has no nails left. You're nothing like him." The man then speaks as he follows a script that Hange shows him, hidden by their bodies. "Like you care? That was his decision. The guy never shuts up about peace and the King. The rest of us hate him. Do us a favour and kill him already." Levi answers him abruptly, "We're not letting it happen until he verifies your story." Hange points to Ralph's lines as he speaks up once again, "You already got what you wanted out of me. Gimme a break. Will I be getting a bed in my cell, or what?" You then see Levi and Hange pull him up the stairs and away. When you open the door as Levi and Hange return to your side, Sannes shouts his next words out defeatedly, as you know he overheard the coerced conversation with Ralph.
"Reiss is the true royal family."
…..
You think back to a few days ago when Historia told us her story. She was born on a small farm in the northern region of Wall Rose on land owned by the noble family of Reiss. Her mother had always read books, whilst Historia had helped with the farm, and every night, a wagon would take her mother away to the city adorned in fancy clothes. But when Historia learned to write and read, she tried to imitate her mother and read her books of stories where parents loved their child; so different to her own experience.
When once she had tried to hug her mother, she had pushed her away, speaking of wanting to have the courage to kill her and then had left. And then five years ago, just days after Wall Maria fell, she had met her father. Rod Reiss. Her mother was also present but frightened. However, they had been surrounded when Rod Reiss led Historia out of her home. Rod Reiss then told the men surrounding them that neither Historia nor her mother had anything to do with him. Her mother had been killed, screaming and wishing Historia had never been born. But before Historia was to die, her father had made a proposal. They could spare her if she lived a quiet life and changed her name to Christa Lenz.
Your eyes widened in realisation as Sannes went on to explain the truth to us. The true royal successor is Historia, and she and Eren are likely captured wherever Rod Reiss is. What's worse is that we later learn that Eren is to be eaten, deduced from the letter he had given Hange of the conversation between Betholdt and Ymir. Apparently, the Titans we had come to fear, the Armoured Titan, Colossal Titan, and Eren's Titan, each held a special ability, along with being able to transform back into humans. Ymir had likely been an ordinary Titan, roaming outside the walls until she had eaten one of their comrades with a Titan ability. That explained why Eren had been sought after by Reiner: to seize his Titan, which can control other Titans with its scream. Eren was a vessel bound to be replaced; if the government had a Titan of their own, he would likely be fed to it, giving them the power: The power to control the Titans.
.....
You sat against a tree next to Levi, now out in the woods, a bit away from Trost. The entire squad had been informed of the situation, and we were on our way to the land owned by Rod Reiss. Hange and Moblit had gone their separate ways as they left to meet with Erwin to consult him about the Reiss family. "Captains! We brought the supplies!" You look up to see that Jean, Armin, and Mikasa had come back from the city, bags of necessities in hand. Armin then walked up to us, giving Levi a piece of paper. "The military Police were handing these out." He says as you lean over Levi's shoulder and take a look.
Your eyes widened; the paper had accused the Scout regiment of murdering a civilian; it was Dimo Reeves. "If this is true, the Scouts will be disbanded. I heard they'll be hunting for us tonight. They're also putting guards on all the vital roads, and it's impossible to get through without a pass. Captains, what now?" Armin asked as he finished informing us of what was happening throughout the walls. "If we don't hurry, Eren..." Mikasa starts to speak before Levi cuts her off as you sense growing tension, "Calm down." You nod, looking at the two who crouched in front of you. "They're using a wagon. It'll take at least a day to reach Reiss' territory. We'll use that time to come up with a plan." The squad seemed to relax at your words before we heard Sasha speak up. "Captains, I hear footsteps. They are coming towards us."
.....
You look down from the trees seeing Armin by the river and acting as a decoy. As planned, two members of the Military approach, guns drawn at the blond boy as he puts his hands up. You nod at Levi, who stands on a tree opposite. You flash down, unsheathing your sword, as you restrain the woman, Levi restraining the man. "That's right... Hand over your guns to the one in front." Levi mutters lowly as the two soldiers are startled in our grasp as they hand their weapons over to Armin. "Not a sound," you add under your breath as the rest of the squad approaches, and Mikasa and Armin restrain the two military soldiers in our hold. You and Levi wander off a bit to the side, assessing the situation.
"Any ideas?" You ask as you look over to Levi. A brief silence takes over before he speaks, "Disguise as Military Police to get by the guards... Then, figure out where Eren was taken by snooping around. To think we'd have no better option..." You frown at him, knowing he is right. "I know it's not ideal, but we don't have time. We have to do it, or it will be a matter of time before we die," You say, looking towards the squad. You squeeze Levi’s shoulder gently in comfort before you see Jean approach, handing Levi a piece of parchment. We stand and walk towards the two Military Police who now sit, hands tied behind their back.
"Stohess District Military Police. Private Marlo Freudenberg. Same assignment. Private Hitch Dreyse." The two soldiers turn stiff at Levi's low words. "As for how we'll dispose of you..." Hitch and Marlo's faces turn into one of shock at his proclamation. "Because of you guys, over 100 people from Stohess District were killed!" Hitch suddenly yells out, causing Levi's eyes to turn to her sharply. "Huh?" But she remains stern as she continues, "You people... You might think you're all heroes of justice, but the victims and their families were dropped straight into hell!" Levi doesn't flinch, "Yeah, I know."
"You there..." Hitch now turns to Mikasa, "You're from the Southern Cadet Corps, yeah? Just like Annie Leonhart. Were you friends of hers?" Silence descends over us before Hitch seems to calm slightly, now looking to the floor as her voice starts to shake. "No... I doubt she had any friends being as gloomy and aloof as she was. It's like she was a kid afraid of other people. I never got the chance to know anything about her. And the reason they still haven't found her... is because she was pulverized by a Titan into a puddle of jelly!" Hitch turns furiously as she faces Levi and you, eyes wide with rage. You can't help but pity her ignorance; she tried not to show it, but she missed a friend who was really the enemy. "No..." you say softly, looking at her form as her eyes flashed to you for the first time, "It's because the Titan in hiding was... Annie Leonhart herself."
Now Marlo turns as well, shock evident on their faces as Hitch takes a sharp intake of breath. "Goddammit, it makes me sick," Levi says, looking to his side. "Nobody knows a damn thing about this world... Not us or anyone else. Except for those bastards at the centre of it all." You see his eyes darken momentarily as he looks back down at the two soldiers before us. "We'll release you both as soon as we get out of here." Hitch looks to the ground, still in disbelief, but you see Marlo turn to us, eyes determined. "Captain [y/n]! Captain Levi! Please let me help you! I don't think what you guys are doing is wrong! If I can help correct this world's injustice, I'll do whatever it takes!" Levi turned sharply towards the man, "What's with this guy?"
"I beg of you, Captains!" Silence descends onto us as Levi turns to you, but you see the same thoughts that cross your mind in his eyes. "We can't," you say, "We don't know how prepared you are about making an enemy of the government." You walk past him with Levi as he speaks to our squad. "Let's go. Sasha, tie them up somewhere nearby." As we walk through to the treeline, Jean speaks up. "Captains! Please let me do it." His face is unyielding, and his eyes are hard; you can't tell what he's thinking. "Knock yourself out," Levi mutters as we continue along.
However, moments later Jean had returned claiming he had tested the loyalties of Hitch and Marlo, and they had been an asset to seeking a path through a checkpoint, the least manned by the Military Police; you were grateful at the very least.
.....
Night fell as you watched Levi beat up a man in front of you. We had successfully fought through the checkpoints and kidnapped one of the men who was with the interior police. "Where are Eren and Christa?" Levi asks the man, but he merely smirks from where blood adorns his face. "Oh, you're so brave. That checkpoint back there was just recruits who could barely wipe their own ass. You think you're some sort of hero, beating them down?" Levi gets up with a bored expression on his face. "What an atrocious thing we've done. But what's more atrocious is this mouth of yours. I recommend you start talking while you're still able to use it." Levi shoves his boot into the mouth of the man, who squirms under the weight of it. "Where are Eren and Christa."
"It's no use," the man says when Levi removes his foot. "All that's left for you now is to run and hide inside these walls, covered in mud and shit! If you don't turn yourselves in, every last Scout we capture will get the noose! Starting with the one most guilty of all, Erwin Smith." At that, you step forward from Levi's side and kick him across the face before keeping your foot firmly planted on his head as he falls to the floor. Levi's eyes flicker slightly in surprise before you mutter lowly, "Answer the damn question. Where are Eren and Christa." The man starts to cry in fear as he looks between you and Levi. "I-I don't know! I'm not allowed to know! Kenny Ackerman is a very cautious man."
You freeze, seeing Levi do the same as you meet his wide eyes. You release the man from under your foot, to which he grasps at his head, still crying. "Ackerman?" Levi asks, his dark eyes turning sharp as we both look at Mikasa, who displays a similar expression. "I know Kenny... Is that his last name?" Levi's eyes continued to sharpen as the man nodded yes to his words. "It's true, there's a lot of things he doesn't divulge... especially the important stuff." you hear Levi mutter before you see him compose himself, needing answers and not the surprising new detail he had just found out. He steps forward past you and towards the man, ready to torture him again, and the man screams out in fear, but we pause at the sound of Sasha's voice. "Someone's coming from that way! More than one!" You and Levi see Sasha pointing towards the open fields. You quickly take shelter behind a tree as Levi forces the man to the floor.
"I told you, Captains, it's no use. One way or another, the Scouts will soon turn to an end!" You hear the man mutter as you grit your teeth at his words. As you look out into the fields, you see two soldiers, covered with hoods, coming towards us with guns in hand. However, as you took a closer look, you froze, seeing Levi do the same. It was Hange and Moblit. They greet us with a wave as you let yourself release a sigh of relief. Hange, however, wastes no time handing Levi a piece of paper. You and the other Scouts quickly surround him to see what's been written. "And there you have it. The coup d'etat was successful. Premier Zachary has control of the capital and administrative district. For the time being, the nobility hasn't rebelled."
Erwin's gamble worked. The gamble that when Erwin was to be sentenced to death for his crimes in concealing Eren, there would be a fake report of Wall Rose being breached; how the "King" and his officials would react determined whether Erwin should live or die. Evidently, the "King" had chosen to act in a way that would've harmed humanity, not saved it. Darius Zachery, along with Commander Pixis, had then risen up, overthrowing the fake King and his subordinates. Of course, had he reacted in a way that had helped humanity, Erwin would have been dead, but it was evident that the gamble had been worth taking.
"What about the Boss Reeves incident?" You hear Armin ask from behind you. "We got a confession that proved the charges unfounded," Hange replies with a smile on their face. "His son Flegel pulled through big time. Just like it's written right there, it shows the charges were bogus, they abused their power, and that King Fritz was a total fake. All our actions were justified in self-defence. In other words, we're free people now." You see the Scouts around you yell and cheer in happiness. They start to run around, spinning and laughing. You join in, a wide grin reaching your features as you pull your arms around Levi in glee. He pauses briefly in surprise at your actions but decides to let you be since the rest of the squad is too caught up in their joy to notice. You see his stare soften as he, meets your shining eyes; it had been a long time since he had seen you so happy.
"By the way, you may have a clue on where Eren and Historia are," Hange says, causing you to break contact with Levi as your smiling face turns into a questioning glance. You see the other Scouts also turn before coming back to our side. Hange holds out a book to Levi, "Let's get there and put an end to this battle."
.....
You sit on a wagon with Levi and Mikasa whilst Hange finishes telling us the story of the incident that happened on Reiss' territory five years ago after Wall Maria had been breached: Before the fall, Rod Reiss wasn't seen as at all bad as the lord of his territory. He had five children; Frieda was the eldest, the most down to earth; even peasants adored her. But five years ago, disaster had stuck. Bandits, using the fall of Wall Maria as a distraction, raided and set fire to the only chapel around. In misfortune, the entire Reiss family had been inside praying together. That night, all but Rod Reiss was massacred by the bandits. The incident only occurred a few days before Historia's mother was killed by the Interior Police. In other words, immediately after losing his family, Rod Reiss sought out Historia.
"There must be a reason he and his lackeys are after Historia," Hange continues as we contemplate her words. "The same bloodline? Is there some secret to their blood?" Levi asks, turning sharply to Hange. "I don't know for sure yet. But what really makes me curious is that some of the Chapel is completely wrecked. The chapel itself is stone. It would take tons of time and effort to destroy it. Bandits would take what they could and quickly get away. Plus, the only one who saw those bandits was Rod Reiss himself. Soon after, he used his own fortune to rebuild the chapel. But why?" The silence hung long before Hange continued with her next words.
"If you think about it, it's actually stranger that there were no traces of Titans. Even if I'm jumping to conclusions, something this suspicious deserves us checking it out." We agree silently as we continue on our path to the location of the church. After a long stretch of silence passes, Levi suddenly speaks up, causing the other Scouts and you to turn to him. Your eyes widen in surprise as he talks to the squad openly about the very man who raised him. "He's Kenny the Ripper. If he's there, he'll be our biggest obstacle. In terms of how much of a threat he is, equate him to you as the enemy. No... with those weapons of his, he's deadlier than me." You tense slightly at the words. Even against you and your speed, Levi would easily dominate with his strength and skill. If we were facing a man more dangerous than that and an Ackerman at that...
"Then he's unbeatable, at least for us..." Sasha mutters from her horse. "If we could meet up with the troops-" Connie starts but is quickly cut off by Mikasa, who swiftly disapproves of that idea, focusing entirely on rescuing Eren... again. "Though, if what the Captain said is true, it's not like he has no weak points," Armin says as you look up to the boy who held onto the reins of the horses that pulled us along. "I'm sure he's trained plenty, but having combat experience is something else." You frowned. It was true, but it was a stretch. "I wonder, though, how is it that you lived with Kenny the Ripper but know nothing about him, Levi?" Hange asks the man, who looks up at them with sharp eyes. "Sorry, but I only found out his full name not too long ago. Apparently, it's Kenny Ackerman. He some relative of yours?" Levi asks Mikasa, who responds after a while.
"I heard from my parents when they were alive that my dad's side, the Ackermans, were persecuted in the cities. My mother's side was oriental, so being a different race meant they didn't fit in anywhere. Both were people chased deep in the mountains near the edge of the walls. So that's how they met and got married. But I never found out why the Ackermans were persecuted. My dad didn't seem like a different race like my mom was." You think back to Levi's words to you a few days ago. The Ackermans and the [l/n] clan were once close to the crown before we were persecuted out of fear... Levi catches your eyes, and you can tell he knows your thoughts, but he decides not to share that information with Mikasa as he asks a completely unrelated question.
"Has there ever been a moment where it felt like power suddenly awakened inside you?" Mikasa looks up as you see her eyes flicker, "There has." There is a pause and a haunting silence before Levi speaks up again. "Kenny Ackerman had a moment like that, too. One time, out of nowhere, he felt an absurd amount of strength surging within him, and he knew exactly what to do." Levi stares darkly at Mikasa as he continues, "I've felt moments like that, too."

Why was the scene of Levi threatening Historia removed?
My initial response to this question was going to be that there inevitably have to be cuts when a lengthy manga is adapted into an anime and it's not uncommon for some nuance and character complexity to be lost along the way in order to make space for more action. However I couldn't actually remember how this scene plays out in the anime, so I went back and watched it again to compare it to the manga, and I realise now that they didn't just cut this scene, they actually rearranged the whole sequence of events.
In the manga, this scene takes place in chapter 56 Actors right at the beginning of the Uprising Arc. Hanji and Levi are in hiding with the 104th and have spent the previous day torturing Sannes into confessing that the Reiss family is the true royal bloodline. The following morning Nifa arrives with orders from Erwin that Historia must take the throne as part of his plan to overthrow the government and the puppet king. Dimo and Flegel Reeves have also just arrived on the scene, tensions are running high and there’s a palpable sense of urgency that they must get their plan underway before their enemies discover what they are up to and start moving against them. Historia has no idea what is going on because Levi “forgot” to tell her. Levi's face here will never cease to crack me up.
It’s hardly surprising that Historia is reluctant and Levi is pissed. Not that that excuses his behaviour, but it’s a very Levi way to react. Erwin has given an order and he’ll be damned if it isn’t carried out. Also Levi knows, better than any of the 104th what’s really at stake here, that’s what his amazing “lunatic” speech is about.
Things play out quite differently in the anime. Levi doesn’t tell Historia that Erwin’s orders are for her to take the throne until episode 45 Outside the Walls of Orvud District. This is effectively 11 chapters after it takes place in the manga. By this stage Historia has already been kidnapped, reunited with her father, recovered her memories of Frida, learned the truth about her family and her lineage, survived the events of the Reiss chapel, seen her father turned into the Flaming Chicken Titan, and retreated with the rest of the Survey Corps to Orvud. She already knows she is Historia Reiss, that she has royal blood and is the rightful heir to the throne. So although she is shocked when Levi conveys Erwin’s order, she doesn’t hesitate to calmly accept.
This is very different from her reluctant, panicked agreement in chapter 56.
This is just one of a number of changes that were made to the Uprising Arc in the anime. As far as I can recall Isayama had said that he was always dissatisfied by the arc so he saw the production of the anime as an opportunity to amend it. Most of the changes simplify the timeline of events, which is no bad thing, though unfortunately some character nuance was lost, particularly in Levi’s case here. This is just my opinion, but I suspect another reason for this change was to give Historia more agency. By the time she is presented with the order to become queen she has already recovered her memories and willingly accepted her destiny. This just makes her subsequent loss of agency in the final seasons all the more frustrating.

Steel Heart Chapter 15:
The Man in the Forest
Hange x Reader Chapter Index Masterlist
Megan's Note: For the vibe of this chapter listen to "Maleficent's Theme" by Tchaikovsky. Or look up and listen to the song "Maleficent's Evil Spell" from George Burn's adaptation for the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty. You'll know the vibe instantly. I also feel like you'll figure out when to play it LOL! Posted: 8/23/24
Word Count: 4.3k
After a filling dinner of roasted chicken, most knights were ready to go to bed. When twilight was cast over the sky, the camp called it a night and headed off to bed. The following morning, the plan was to eat, pack, bathe, and then ride to a farm owned by the Reeves family—a father-and-son company with close ties to the Royal family and the Kingdom.
Dimo and his son Flegel made their wealth by building a large company with different farms near the districts. The company handles and distributes meat and produce to markets in every district and nearby villages. The farm that Hange said they were heading to in the morning was a farm that happened to be Flegel’s main residence—a spice farm growing and distributing goods such as saffron, wasabi, and other common spices.
Levi gave you a second cup of tea with a higher dose of the sleeping pills, then packed away the empty kettle. You stayed by the fire while Levi and the knights packed up the camp. Since being in the forest, the air was cooler and the shadows of the knights were eerier. The knights walking back and forth to the horses would disappear out of sight once leaving the illumination of the fire. You could barely make out who was approaching the camp until crossing the threshold of the light. Would you have time to react if an unwanted person came from the shadows?
Hange emerged from the tent, holding a lit candle and a bag and walking to the dark abyss. They disappeared out of sight nearly instantly and made you feel alone. You looked around at the desolate campsite and decided to return to the tent. As you went further from the fire, the chill air crept onto your back and neck. The feeling that someone was watching you made the hairs on your neck stand up. You gripped your cloak and hurried into the tent. You could barely make out the silhouette of the table and chairs in the tent.
You knew Hange’s story was something they made up to scare you, but the feeling of being watched didn’t leave you. It’s something that could happen. A Marleyan Cult member hiding amongst the trees watching and waiting to take you. You carefully walked to your bedroll, removed your cloak and crawled inside. You noticed you were holding your breath and released it.
I’m safe with Hange
A light appeared in the tent and Hange returned. You noticed their shirt didn’t have the dirt stain on the front. Then you realized Hange was wearing the pale yellow collared long-sleeve shirt. You and Hange weren’t twins anymore.
“Why aren’t you wearing the matching white shirt, Hange?” You whined.
“Oh, the shirt with the dirt on it?” Hange put their free hand on their hip and raised their eyebrows skeptically.
“Duh,” Hange scoffed, then chuckled to themselves. “We aren’t twins anymore!”
“So that’s what your whining is about?” Hange grabbed the white shirt from out of a bag that was on the table. “You’re pouting about not being twins, huh?”
“UGH!”
“The Princess wants me to wear a dirty shirt just so we can twin,” Hange said, licking their thumb and wiping the stain of dirt. “It’s not coming off—I’ll wash it in the river tomorrow,” they said to themselves.
“Can you wear it? Please?!?!”
“I can’t say no to Princess Y/N,” Hange turned around and unbuttoned their pale yellow shirt. You turned over in your bedroll, giving them privacy. You wanted to peek at their body, but the thought of getting caught was embarrassing. If Hange caught you, you wouldn’t know how to explain yourself. Plus, bathing in the river makes it easier to gaze at Hange’s body. “Alright! We’re twins again!”
“GOOD!” You turned over to see Hange’s arms up, presenting themselves in the white shirt! The top three buttons were undone, pleasantly revealing their cleavage. Thank goodness you were far enough away for Hange not to be able to distinguish where you were looking. Now that you were alone again, you wanted to know Hange’s dating history. The girls' names, what they looked like, or what they were like as Hange’s girlfriend. Your heart pounded in your chest, and you were confused about why you were nervous about asking Hange. They were dismissive of your questions earlier about their dream girl. Earlier, you speculated that Hange didn’t want to share about their past relationship. Perhaps you could ask one more time and if they didn’t want to share, you wouldn’t bring it up. At least you’d try. “Hey, I was wondering something . . .”
“Oh yeah? Let me take two more bags and I’ll be all yours!” Hange held the candle in one hand and leveraged two bags in the other. As they walked out of your shared tent, you contemplated how you would approach Hange on the possibly sensitive topics. Maybe ask with a preface of only sharing what they want. Perhaps lie to Hange? Tell them you have only asked these questions to help with your future relationship with a stranger. Fairy Godmothers Christa and Ymir wouldn’t approve. Those two would slap you and tell you they didn’t raise a liar. Though they did withhold information about your life, wasn’t that a lie?
Your heart continued to pound and the anticipation of asking Hange clouded your thoughts. You stared at the side of the tent and it was like you couldn’t hear or feel anything—only think. It wasn’t a big deal just ask Hange. They were your friend. You toyed with the fabric of your bedroll, balling it between your index finger and thumb. When Hange came back into the tent, you could hear them shivering. Their shoulders were to their ears and they were holding themselves.
“It’s so cold out there,” Hange said as they walked to their bedroll and placed the small candle on the ground. The low light created an effortless glow to illuminate their pleasant features. Hange’s thick lashes behind their glasses were feminine and doe-like.
Woah.
“U-Uh . . .”
“Is something wrong, my dear?”
“I um—I was just thinking of something?”
“Care to share?” Hange turned around and began undressing themselves. You wanted to turn away from them, but truly, you were enamored. Your mouth was agape, and thoughts swirled in your head. Even though Hange was interested in girls, how could the knights around the camp pay attention with them around? Some of the knights must be crushing on Hange. Hange set their glasses down and sighed.
“I was just thinking—thinking about my marriage to Prince Marco—” You sounded unsure and with the realization you could play it off as nerves, you continued confidently. Though Hange’s naked body was right next to you, the top of the tent looked really cool. “—Thinking about how to be a good girlfriend. What do you think makes a good girlfriend?”
“You mean a wife?”
“Yeah, that.” Hange crawled into the bedroll and pulled it up to their neck. You noticed Hange was facing you and proceeded to mirror them, knowing it was safe to look. They had their eyepatch on still and you pulled the covers all the way to your neck.
“That’s a long answer, Princess,” Hange whispered as the outside camp became silent and the knights headed to bed. “I’m afraid it depends on the person, but a good baseline is being a good communicator, compatible, and respectful mostly. Arranged marriages are standard for royal families; married couples typically learn to love each other. Or at least be on a friendly level.”
“Friendly?” You whispered and Hange nodded.
“The marriages aren’t for love; it's to unite the royal families for trade or for allies.” Your heart sank at Hange’s words and the thought of your marriage being for a price other than love. It felt like a heavy, unknown cloud of responsibilities looming over you. “You’re going to be Queen and be the Ruler of the Walls.”
“What about Prince Marco?” Hange scoffed and revealed a dimple on their face from smiling. The dimple on their cheek gave Hange an added cuteness and adorable aura to their face.
“Yes, the King is important, but really, the Queen is worshiped by all. I mean, she’s growing the heir. The Queen is the one who holds the bloodline of the Royal family. A man could wander the earth not knowing they have a child with multiple women, but every woman will know if an heir is theirs.” The thought of submitting yourself to the unknown Prince Marco to conceive an heir made you feel uneasy and . . . violated. You didn’t want to do that. But maybe it was not as bad as it seems—maybe it’s something you’ll learn to enjoy, like how you’ll learn to love a stranger.
“Hange . . . what’s a good partner for you?” Their eyes darted away from you and there was a hesitance behind their voice. “You don’t have to answer I just—I just don’t want to think about making heirs with a stranger.”
“That’s quite understandable, Y/N.” There was a pause from Hange. They were gathering their thoughts, and you hoped Hange would share about their past relationships.
“I prefer a girl who is fun. They make me laugh and don’t let the weight of their problems always weigh them down. Also intelligent and have a vested interest in learning more about the world. Knowing there’s so much more we haven’t discovered! And I guess loyalty. But in the end, most relationships come down to compatibility, respect, and mutual devotion.”
“Levi told me that relationships also have to deal with going through hardships together, willingly.” Hange brought their hand from out of their bedroll and tapped your nose. You smiled fondly, knowing that they were going to do that.
“Levi was right.” The candle flame flickered and the wax droplets raced down the candle stick and gathered at the brass candle holder. “There are many types of hardships that can affect relationships. Outside forces and inner conflicts . . . I dated a girl who had a hard time accepting her attraction to girls. She finally felt confident and told her parents, but her father was unhappy. He loomed over her, being the devil on her shoulder and eventually, she ended our relationship.” Hange admitted and you looked away from them. When Hange was telling the story, they didn’t sound sad, it must have been a long time ago and they had time to heal from the pain that was brought by that girl—the girl who wasn’t willing.
“I’m so sorry, Hange . . .” You whispered.
“Don’t be. Another example of a hardship is when I lost my eye. I was dating a girl and learning to accept my new appearance. In the end, I let my insecurities get to me and I thought she wanted to be with prettier girls and so I ended it . . .” Hange rolled onto their back and closed their eye. You studied their face. The lovely features from their aquiline nose to their soft lips all complement each other to create their face—the face in oil paintings and the face you like looking at.
“Hange . . . you are really pretty, please believe me! But I also don’t care what you look like. I care more about who you are; you, Hange Zoe, are my best friend.” Hange didn’t react to your praise. It was like they were deciding to do something—to choose how to respond to you. They breathed evenly for a few moments, and then, under their breath, they spoke.
“That’s because you are a kind soul, Princess. Through the horrors you’ve seen, you remained kind. Even after the Marleyan Cultists captured you, you still don’t hate them . . . only feared them.” You didn’t know how to respond. Should you hate the Marleyan Cult? You only hated that they were hunting you. You didn’t even know of the Marleyan Cult until you escaped Shiganshina with Sir Miche Zacharius. Though you were with many knights, you wanted to learn how to defend yourself if needed. Levi and Sir Zacharius told you that all the knights would lay down their lives for you, and they have, but you still want to learn to defend yourself.
“Hange . . . I’ve been wanting to learn how to fight and I know I can’t learn to be great in just one day, but maybe some tricks on how to not be helpless?” Hange’s eye fluttered open and they craned their neck toward you. Then, their fondness grew.
“You have tackled me twice already and slapped Eren pretty hard,” then Hange started snickering to themselves.
“What?”
“I’m just imagining, little ole, you tackling some big man,” Hange amusingly giggled and their contagious nature caused you to join in. “But anyways, Levi would be a good person to ask because he has great instincts. Plus, he knows how to go against people twice his size.”
“Okay, that is a good idea. Maybe he can teach me or give me tips during downtime! The only thing I know is Sir Zacharius told me to go for the neck and kick them in the balls,” Hange burst out loudly. They couldn’t contain their laughter and their shoulders were jiggling up and down. They slapped their bedroll as they caught their breath.
“He would tell you that,” Hange reached for the brass ring along the candle holder and clutched it between their thumb and index finger. “We should go to sleep.” The tent became pitch black when Hange blew out the candle. You felt pleased that Hange opened up about some of their past relationships. Hange’s story of the girl who had trouble accepting their feelings for girls stayed with you. It confused you.
“Hange . . . ?” You whispered.
“We should sleep, Princess Y/N.”
“One more question!”
“Okaaayy, what?”
“Why did the girl have difficulty accepting she liked girls?” Hange sighed and you heard them shift in their bedroll.
“Could be because she heard her father disprove of girls dating each other all her life. Could be because she expected herself to marry a man. Could be because deep down inside, she didn’t like girls dating each other and didn’t expect to be attracted to me. Her environment. Her circumstances.” You thought about your home in the cottage with Christa and Ymir. They raised you to be accepting and kind to others. Your Fairy Godmothers were in love and together. They raised you and your only exposure to love was Christa and Ymir. Ymir made sure there were fresh flowers in the vase on the table and threw out the dead ones before Christa saw them. They enjoyed each other’s company and were a team. They were devoted to one another and helped each other. You wanted a love like that. But for some reason you didn’t want that with Prince Marco Bodt.
“Hange, how did you know you wanted to date girls?” There was a pause and the dark abyss of the tent comforted you while you waited for their reply. You held your breath, wanting to know the moment it clicked for Hange. Did they see a girl’s naked body? Did Hange have some girl save their life or give them a thoughtful gift? Perhaps Hange was just Hange. Or they met a girl that changed their life—the light in the darkness.
“When you know, you know.”
Hange’s words stayed in your mind as you tried to fall asleep. You shivered in your bedroll. You had more layers than Hange, yet you were the one freezing. In the dark, you felt around for the brass candle holder. You felt the rim of the brass saucer and moved your fingers around the edges, feeling for the circular handle. Then, you carefully moved the candle from between you and Hange to the other side of you.
While in your bedroll, you shuffled closer to Hange. You got close enough and felt the lump of their body against your side. They didn’t move away from you and you were pleased they let you snuggle next to them. Warmth radiated off of them and after a while, you felt your eyelids droop as you faded to sleep.
You didn’t expect to wake up; it was still dark out. You felt an ache between your legs and groaned when you realized you needed to use the restroom. If Levi hadn’t given you a second cup of tea, you might have been able to wait until morning to use the restroom. The wind softly blew the leaves of the trees rhythmically, and it felt colder than it had been earlier in the evening. There was a faint noise outside, sounding like a chorus.
“Hange . . . ?” You shook Hange and they groaned. “Hange! I really need to use the restroom.” You whispered and they groaned and shifted in their sleep.
“I’m naked,” Hange mumbled and was barely audible.
“I know I’m sorry, but I need to go!” You whispered desperately. Hange shifted in their sleep and then said nothing else. You rocked them, hoping they would be annoyed with your persistence. “Hange Zoe, I have to pee really bad!”
“Take the candle and have one of the knights on rotation escort you. There should be four guarding the camp!” Hange said, half asleep. “Pee behind the tent if you need to.”
Hange went still again, and their even breaths returned. You just needed to go quickly. It’ll take less than a minute, and then you could drift back to sleep next to Hange. You felt around for the brass handle of the candle holder. When your fingertips felt the saucer, you pulled it closer, and then you felt around for your boots.
With the candle in hand and your boots on, you stood up and shivered from the cold, hitting more of your body. You figured you didn’t need your cloak because you’d be quick and slowly walked toward the table. You grunted when your hip hit the table. You felt the surface of the smooth tabletop and placed the candle on the table. A small box was on the table and you opened it and dug inside for a match. You felt the head of the match with your fingers. Then you struck the head against the side of the box and fire spewed from the tip.
The candle lit up the tent faintly, and Hange was deep asleep and unbothered by the light. You carried the candle in front of you and carefully exited the tent. The camp was dark, nearly pitch black. In the distance were four specks of light—knights with their own light source. You carefully looked at the ground and walked toward the closest one.
“Hello?” You whispered into the abyss and the light in the distance shifted. As you came closer, the flame in the distance approached. When you were a few feet away from each other, you saw a man with really short hair like Connie’s and you recognized him talking to Eren, Jean, and Connie. He trained with them when they were younger.
“Your Highness? Is something wrong?” He whispered and his skinny eyebrows furrowed.
“Franz . . . right? I—uh, need to use the restroom and Hange’s asleep. They told me to have one of the guards escort me . . .” Franz Kefka blushed and stared at you. He was caught off guard by the request. “I’ll be quick. Just go with me into the forest and then give me privacy . . .”
“Right, I’ll protect you, Princess Y/N.” He said, and you both used your candles as a guiding light. You carefully walked and avoided tripping over the rocks and twigs on the ground. Chills were on your back, and you felt like you were being watched. You followed Franz into the forest. Franz drew his sword, and you looked around the dark abyss as if looking would help you see better. “We don’t need to go far since it’s dark. Just go ahead and I’ll be here if anything happens.”
“T-Thank you, Sir Kefka,” But something was holding you back from leaving Franz’s side. A foreboding feeling and the hairs standing on your neck did not help. The ache between your legs was about to burst, so you went a couple of trees in front of Franz.
When you were a few trees away from him, you set your candle on the ground. You looked over your shoulder to see Franz’s flame in the distance. You couldn’t see him, and he couldn’t see you. Behind a tree trunk, you undressed yourself. You held the small dagger inside your boot as you urinated on the ground. You felt better after releasing yourself and quietly put on your clothes. There was an odd noise in the distance and you froze.
Your heart raced and you shoved your boots on and picked up your candle. The trees stood large and tall, surrounding you. You heard it again—the noise. It sounded like a chorus. You gasped and looked around, but only the abyss of darkness was seen. You pivoted toward Franz’s light, but the sound of your name in the wind had you frozen in place.
Did I just hear . . . ?
The chorus of your name dared you to walk deeper into the forest. Chills were on your cheeks and your breath was visible before you. You could barely breathe and your shoulders tensed up.
Someone was calling your name.
The pleasant chorus called your name again, beckoning you.
Like a trance.
You held out your candle and listened to the chorus—a sinister falsetto among the trees deep within the forest. You obeyed the voice calling for you and walked further from the camp. Your hand shook as you held out your knife. There was a crunch of twigs under your boots, and you passed trees, searching for the voice.
The chorus lured you away from the camp. The twist in your stomach told you to turn around—to not follow the voice. But the temptation from the song of your name was controlling you.
Follow the voice.
Give in to the calls.
Franz’s light was invisible behind you and the melody of your name stopped. Was this where they wanted you? You followed the call obediently and you listened for another call. You swore someone was calling your name. Then you sighed and turned to go back to camp.
Your breath hitched. A few feet away, a silhouette of a man stood, his eyes glowing in the abyss.
“F-Franz?” You were shaking as you held your candle toward the glowing eyes. Your eyes went wide when your candle's flame glowed on the stranger’s face. The tall man wore a suit of armor—yet he was a man you had never seen before. His piercing gaze made your heart jolt. He held a crested sword like the Knights of the Royal King’s Guard. Something inside you screamed for you not to trust the stranger. When he stepped toward you, your stomach flipped. The stranger's blonde hair had stains of blood and there was blood on the gorget of his armor.
You shrieked and ran toward the camp. You raced away, hoping help would come. From deep inside you, you let out another guttural scream. Tears filled your eyes and your heart was in your throat.
“HELP!” You ran dodging trees and gasping for air. “FRANZ! HANGE!” Your feet pounded the ground, and you felt a pinch in your lungs. Tears were staining your face and the burn of running inflamed your throat. In the distance, you could see Franz’s flame coming toward you. The two of you rammed into each other and you screamed in his face, “THERE’S A MAN IN THE FOREST!” You cried and Franz’s mouth gaped open and his eyes went wide. The three other guards that were on rotation ran to you and Franz. You wailed and had trouble catching your breath. One of the guards told the other to alert Captain Levi and Commander Dame Hange. You wheezed as you cried and then fell to the ground on your knees.
“Princess!” Franz bent down to your feeble form. He forcefully got you on your feet as you wailed and walked you toward the camp.
“WE’RE BEING WATCHED! THERE WAS A MAN IN THE FOREST!” You bawled. The tears were blinding you. More knights came up to you and you screamed, feeling overwhelmed and like everyone was going to hurt you.
“Calm down!” You heard Levi’s commanding voice. You were struggling to breathe and felt dizzy. The darkness was tricking you and you couldn’t tell where you were. Knights came out of their tent to check on your loud sobs. Franz led you to a log that you recognized was around the campfire. You whimpered and wiped your tears as you were forced to sit on the log. A group of knights surrounded you, intently waiting for you to calm down. You felt comforting hands on your back as you caught your breath. Levi, Jean, Connie, Eren, Franz, and more knights were seen from the candlelight.
“I saw a man in the forest!” You pointed toward the abyss.
“She’s distraught,” Levi said and he turned to Franz, “What happened?”
“She needed to use the bathroom, so I escorted her. Then I gave her privacy, and she ran back screaming about seeing a man,” Franz’s voice wavered.
“Damn it! I knew Hange’s joke would spook her,” Levi said.
“NO! I saw him! There was a blonde knight with a crested sword and he was covered in blood,” You wailed. Their faces froze and you could tell they didn’t know what to say. Hange then appeared in the group and you noticed they were wearing your cloak. They held it, covering themselves and then crouched next to you. You sprung yourself on Hange, wrapping your arms around their neck. They held you as you calmed down and then they stroked your back. “We’re being watched,” you choked out.
“Levi, she said the knight was blonde and had a crested sword,” You heard Jean’s voice. “Could he have been Erwin Smith?”

I am going to add on a possible piece of clothing that they share together in the manga. I said possible, so I may be wrong because of the heavy levihan filter lens over my eyes.
Once again, if our views dont click, please go away. 🙏
I was reading the manga to establish the timeline for the elusive black jacket in the Uprising arc. And I realised a few things:
Levi was wearing the black jacket at first when Hange visit him and his squad at their hideout. Chapt 52.
He was first seen with this hoodie when they decided to continue with the experiment on Eren. Chapt 53. Likely he is ready to be back to action because Isayama mentioned that the black jacket kind of symbolises his time-off from the leg injury from the Female Titan. And since the owner of the black jacket is there, it should be returned back.
3. Thereafter, he continued to wear this hoodie for the decoy mission to capture Reeves and MP. Hange is no where to be seen until they capture the MP.
4. The next time the black jacket was seen, it was on Hange who went back to meet Erwin and told him about Eren possibly at risk of being eaten. Chapt 57
I can assume that before this, she had been with Levi and his squad because they needed some torture bonding time with the MPs they captured. That fits the timeline because in the manga, Eren recalled Ymir and Berthoh's (I will never be able to spell his name right) conversation about shifters power being transferred by eating the other, and he had told Hange about that after her "Baka!" speech with Sannes. Chapt 56
5. So then after this, they went separate ways. One thing to note is that other than Levi, Sasha is the only other person who wears a hoodie.
A comparison of how Levi's and Sasha's hoodie secures. Sasha's one is secured with strings at the center. So it is quite certain that these 2 are different clothings.
6. The last time the black jacket made an appearance in this arc is a flashback from Hange when she reads the letter from Erwin after capturing Flegel.
7. Thereafter, they met up at Moppel's barn for the final battle at the chapel. Nothing much but in Orvud district (Chapt 67), Hange appears to be wearing something with a hood that is drapped over her shoulders.
It could be a cape but there looks like a sleeve on her left side. And Sasha is wearing her hoodie. The rest of the soldiers are in their military uniform so the only other person who has a hoodie could have draped it around her cos she is injured.
So subtle but it is all there.
Additional note:
There is a lot of changes to the scenes from this arc in the anime. However, when Levi went back to Trost to update Erwin about the failed experiement (not forgetting to mention how important books on hardening are), he was still in the black jacket. The next day, when he met up with Hange in the hideout again, and when Hange updated everyone that Nick is dead, he is still wearing the black jacket. Kind of obvious whose jacket is that now... Season 3 Episode 1
No thoughts, just Hange and Levi sharing everything.

the location of any event in season 4 is mysterious but here is my best guess for chapters 106+
they never moved annie from stohess in four years; ch 125 is seriously one of the only times we have a location placard/narration box, and in the hulu release it's fuckin wrong (says trost)
so it follows that paradis’ military HQ is also stohess bc zackly’s assassination is right after armin visits annie, which makes some strategic sense: marley is to the south and west, eastward is just “the indian ocean,” so a land attack would hit the capital and all the western districts first
eren must also be held in stohess because hange visits both him and zackly in the same chapter, so it's possible annie is just a few subterranean floors below him
very confident about all that. i think stohess only became this central after the basement, though, bc otherwise zackly seems to wander around: eren's trial happens in trost, and pixis and erwin seem to have to wait for zackly to get in on the coup in mitras, so he might have traveled from somewhere. same for nile—he must only be in stohess when they capture annie because the scouts are coming from karanes district. but:
where is niccolo’s restaurant? two theories. one, another of Sina’s districts, if its main function is to target ranked officers, but they could also easily travel, maybe by train. two, I could see Marleyans being made to live in Wall Maria, since the walldians may be reluctant to resettle there. this makes sense for how quickly the SC and Falbi are brought to Shiganshina.
where is the prison falbi were held in? if they were able to make it to the Brauses on foot, maybe Wall Rose/Trost-ish
why is Flegel Reeves shouting w the crowd outside HQ? i guess the bourgeois don’t need to be near their actual businesses all the time but?? also the newspaper reporters we see more of in the manga who i Assumed lived in Trost are also in damn Stohess. what is the island’s media industry like
where did Connie, Armin and Falbi meet Annie? hitchannie went south from stohess, but connie took falco north from shiganshina toward ragako. my guess is around Trost, and they all go to Shiganshina to regroup w jeankasa/pick up reiner
hange finds levi somewhere within Wall Maria (bc zevi were camping in the titan forest), sure. but when they meet magath and pieck, idk what those two were doing, at all. were they going north? just trying to get tf away from the wall titans? looking for reiner and falbi?
we never hang out in western districts at all (krolva/rose and yarckel/sina), and never get yams' names for the other three maria districts (quinta is apocryphal imo)

Miles long posts are the cornerstone of our mutuality; it is what is. Thank you for always engaging with me.
Something I meant to mention in my second reblog that I think is an important additional example/clarification of the difference between stoicism and reservedness is in how Hange handles their emotions in high-stress/high-stakes situations. Hange, who is canonically known for their wacky, wild, out-there personality. Hange, who is expressive to the point of theatrics. Hange, who is always smiling, yelling, running around to the point of near over-exertion is still stoic during intense, dramatic affairs. Yes, they were downtrodden and emotional over Sonny and Bean's murder; yes they were theatrical whenever they learned new information about Titans/humanity/life within the walls. They were a researcher who was deeply theoretically invested in those things. We also see them employ a very calm, stoic demeanor in times of crisis: deciding to sacrifice themself for the blimp and the conversation they had with Armin about becoming the next commander; when taking on the role of commander in Erwin's wake; in the conversation with Flegel Reeves. As much as Hange's emotional expression was innate, it was also demonstrably a skill used to bluff and manipulate (i.e. Pastor Nick); they knew both how to employ and compartmentalize emotional expression depending on what they deemed necessary in a situation. That there is enough proof for me that stoicism isn't an innate state of being but rather a coping method to engage in depending on the circumstances presented.
Again, comparatively, a skill in which I'm not sure anyone whose done any amount of character analysis (or even watched the fucking show) could see Levi partaking in. He is emotionally stunted, expressively stunted, but it seems the appeal in that tends to come in the form of people misappropriating his strength to suit their circle-jerk of toxic-masculinity and inceldom. Which, like, fine. Do that in fanon places.
Tangentially, I wonder if 7m7n7 and juripearl run in the same spaces. Are they mutuals? Do they share the same fanon? Same headcanons? Because their vitriolic, profane projections onto queer and non-self shippers are deeply analogous. Truly hateful, unhinged individuals.
Anyway, I don't really have a way to segue, but I want to say: I'm not an Eruri shipper; I see the appeal, recognize it as likely the most logical/sensible ship for Levi (also, Farlan for his underground days, maybe Hange), but have never been particularly interested in it because I'm not particularly partial to Erwin's character. That said, I have no problem with any fanon, shipping, AU, anything I come across on this site or that grazes my dash because it being available to me is my own doing. I have plenty of tags/blogs/phrases/words blocked/filtered. Anything I don't want to interact with is a click away from disappearing. I don't understand why people would interact with a site like Tumblr, a site that isn't algorithmic in the slightest whose blogs/feeds are solely built off of what you decide to add onto them, in a way that would expose them to information/views/content that they don't want to see. Filter that shit out and block the blog. You can literally build yourself an echo chamber on here and no one would know. You are intentionally setting yourself up to be triggered and angry and actively seeking interactions and information that you find upsetting. What is that for? (obvi this whole paragraph is the general you and not you, in particular, Cosmie.)
Okay, this person @7m7n7, whom I've now blocked, decided to start some major shit with me on one of my own posts https://www.tumblr.com/cosmicjoke/752860317563895808/for-a-character-like-that-supposed-to-be-stoic-and?source=share answering an anon ask. I no longer want to engage with this person, so I've blocked them. But I still want everyone to see their bullshit, and so no one can accuse me of being afraid of others seeing their replies, like they tried to do. I'm posting the whole conversation here.
They accuse me of taking issue with them because they "disagreed" with me, but another poster disagreed with me on the same post and I took no issue with them whatsoever. My issue wasn't the disagreement. I never have an issue with anyone who disagrees with me. I have multiple mutuals who disagree with me all the time, and we're still friends. It's the WAY people disagree that bothers me. If they're going to be insulting about it, then I'm going to have a problem.
Their accusation against me that I was "woobifying" Levi and saying his stoicism is "fake" by saying that it's a coping mechanism to deal with his grief and trauma, that it isn't at all indicative of his true feelings, something about Levi that is commonly understood among the AoT fanbase in general, is what pissed me off.
I was simply saying that Levi has developed an in the moment, emotional distance between himself and the events of his life as a way of dealing with the pain those events cause him, and that that emotional distance, that "stoicism" isn't any kind of indicator of him lacking emotion or of him being unaffected by said events. And for that, I'm apparently "woobifying" Levi and saying his stoicism is "fake".
The language they use here is the same type of language that so many of those anon haters were sending to Levi blogs in the wake of "Bad Boy", accusing anyone who wanted to discuss Levi's trauma and the trauma of him being exposed to or even possibly experiencing sexual assault of "femininizing" him or trying to make him seem weak. It's the same sort of homophobic, sexist attitude, and is plainly indicative of this person's biased, even vitriolic disdain of any man who's impacted by their trauma. This kneejerk hostility toward anyone daring to acknowledge that Levi is an emotional man who indeed IS impacted by the events of his life. It says everything about what kind of person they are, and nothing about Levi himself. They just hate men who possess any qualities that could be seen as feminine in any way, including having actual feelings, apparently.

Hi, I love your posts! Do you think Hange was Erwin's first choice as the next commander? While they were clearly very strategically capable and have been put into leadership a lot initially as well by Erwin (acting as his second-in-command), Hange wasn't exactly much suitable for politics as it turned and maybe Erwin knew this too, so maybe he only chose them because other older soldiers were dead by that time. Thank you for answering :D
Hi, thank you! Yes, I firmly believe Hange was Erwin’s first choice. Not only they were one of the closest people to Erwin, together with Levi and Mike, since the beginning of the manga (hence before the SC were decimated in subsequent battles, Shiganshina for last), but also, among all SC members, Hange was unarguably the one who uniquely possessed those qualities that made them the most suitable for the role of commander of the SC: that special ability to envision the future, a bright intellect, and the capacity to think differently about things - which enabled them to gain invaluable insights, and push their understanding of the world forward.
Also, I don’t see how it turned out that Hange wasn’t exactly suitable for politics, and in this regard, in the Uprising Arc, I think we’ve actually had a demonstration that Hange had a pretty proper understanding of how politics worked. As Erwin’s and Pixis’ schemes served to finally expose the royal government and its top brass’ disregard for humanity and selfishness, at the same time, if Hange hadn’t thought about gathering the help of all those people (Flegel, Roy and Peuere, and those who witnessed the First Interior Squad attempted murder at Flegel), which testimony cleared the SC of all its charges, accused the Military Police, and let the citizens know the truth, the SC and the Garrison would never have had the people’s support, and their overtaking the old corrupted government would have turned into a bloodbath (as in Armin’s speculation), in which many people would have died, and caused chaos inside the walls. It was hence thanks to Hange’s foresight, their understanding of the importance of making connections with other people, and the value they put on everyone’s individual choices, that they managed to prevent what was thought of as inevitable by everyone else, and to turn the political tables, winning people’s general support, thus avoiding what could have become civil war inside the walls.
In addition, to say that Erwin chose Hange as commander only because other older soldiers were dead by that time is not only disrespectful towards Hange, but also towards the relationship of friendship, trust and mutual respect there was between them and Erwin. Not only, indeed, did Hange look up to and thoroughly trusted Erwin’s judgement, but also Erwin respected them and valued their insights, when it came to making rapid field decisions too (just as when, for instance, he made Levi resupply because he remembered what Hange deduced, or he trusted Hange’s guess about Reiner and Bert’s direction), and entrusted them important responsibilities. And, very importantly, Erwin was one of the few who recognized the value of Hange’s biological research on titans. He approved and supported it, having an entire squad helping Hange with it, and letting them stay near Levi’s squad to experiment on Eren’s titan. In the Uprising Arc, as first thing after having acquired that new information about Ymir and Bert convo, Hange immediately took and rode to inform Erwin, and then Erwin too shared with Hange his new information, and so they proceeded to exchange their respective theories, trying to figure out the meaning of all that together. And as my little headcanon, I can perfectly see the two of them spending evenings together, discussing about the true nature of things, sharing their hypothesis, and imagining the world outside the walls.
So, rather than suggesting that Erwin made that choice only because there was nobody better left, I think that the whole manga actually showed us that he chose Hange, because he recognized their value, their resolve, their intelligence, and that special way to look at the world, which made Hange the perfect candidate to be the next SC commander.
