I personally don't think Ren is a soft yandere by any means (barring when it comes to Angel), but I do think the reason why most people view him as such is because I barely receive any yandere-esque questions on Tumblr anymore, which has lead to this somewhat sanitised outlook on Ren ^^;

I typically receive very standard, mundane, and HR-appropriate asks (/pos, /nm) that don't encroach on that territory, so Ren's overall characterisation tends to end up being watered down into "generic, overly supportive boyfriend who's secretly obsessed with you". And while I genuinely have nothing against these family-friendly asks, they also don't really give me much room to talk about Ren in a more... morbid sense jhgjhsg

It's difficult for me to turn "How would Ren react to Angel owning a pet worm?", "Does Ren know how to make spaghetti?", "Can Ren play the saxophone?", etc, into something darker than it needs to be, but I also don't want to discourage folks from sending in these kinds of questions either. I know they're just curious and want to have their headcanons acknowledged, and again, I have nothing against these types of asks.

They're definitely fun to answer (/gen), but they just... don't give me much opportunity to take it a step further ;v;

Also! I'd like folks to be more aware of the fact that Ren is literally trying to come across like a normal person in the game, so I can't exactly showcase how far he's willing to take things without portraying him incorrectly or spoiling something. I know this is somewhat of a double-edged sword, but I've always been open to answering "what if" scenarios that take place in an AU/non-canon setting (such as how Ren would react if Angel wanted to partake in his Red Room activities).

Jax 001 Theory AKA An almost definitely wrong TADC theory

I thought it was weird that they gave specific attention to Jax seeing the license plate. Like, there's a whole shot dedicated it. And it doesn't serve much of a purpose. I guess it lets us know that this is Jax's car? But it's in the episode. A full shot dedicated to seeing him notice it. A full shot dedicated to the plate itself.

And there's a shot afterwards of him reacting to it. Not even a particularly comedic shot. It feels more in line with his reaction to Kaufmo's funeral in episode 2.

True, it could be him reacting to the awful adventure he just had, but we just had a scene where his smile turned into a scowl. And, you know, pretty much the rest of the episode. Or it could be him reacting to the absurdity of the license plate, but considering the day to day adventures Caine creates, this seems a bit tame to get any reaction from him.

So that gets me wondering, does the license plate have any significance? The number at the top right could be some sort of reference. But it's the 001 that intrigued me. It's typically a number given to the first of something. Maybe even the first person to come to the circus?

Instantly the idea sounded ridiculous (because it is, this theory is almost definitely wrong). I mean, Jax himself said that Kinger had been here the longest. But take a look back at what he actually said.

"Supposedly been here the longest"

At first glance, this seems to mean that Jax can't be sure who's been here the longest. Which makes sense when you consider Kinger's memory issues and all the circus members who have abstracted. And, let's be real, this is probably what the line means. But if you'll let me be delusional for a second, there's another way to read this line.

What if Jax means that everyone assumes Kinger had been there the longest? But he knows it's not true because he's been there the longest?

For most characters, it wouldn't make sense for them to be purposefully vague with their wording. But this is Jax. It's completely in character for him to keep things from the other circus members for no reason. In the first episode alone he kept his supply of keys and Kaufmo's abstraction a secret. Jax will lie about pretty much everything, and he's pretty good at it too.

Further delusions can also be found in episode one. When Pomni tries take her headset off, Jax says this.

Could it be that Jax knows the circus members all tried to take off their headsets because he was there when they did it? Again, probably not. This is the weakest piece of evidence I have, but I figured I'd include it anyway.

And that would explain a fair bit of his behavior. Jax seems more comfortable in the circus than any of them. He has access to keys. He's only momentarily surprised by Kaufmo abstracting. He's incredibly jaded. He seems bored with the adventures, deliberately causing chaos to get them off track (his hijinks on the syrup truck, sucking up the ghost in the mansion, and trying to dunk Ragatha in the oil). It almost reads like a gamer who's played the game a thousand times and is trying anything to make it interesting.

Again, I'm fully aware that this probably isn't the case. I'd say there's a 0.01% chance that this will be confirmed in any capacity whatsoever. It will almost definitely be disproved. But until then, I thought this would be a fun idea. Maybe it'd be a good fic.

Yes- he loved to tease you even after you confessed your feelings. He played games to make sure you were really up for the challenge. Testing your character and morals. Enjoyed torturing you a bit too much. However when it came to his feelings.. Jeonghan thought himself to be the only one worthy of your affections. He intended to show his interest soon enough, just wanted to frolic for a moment longer. Tragically that was exactly where he miscalculated.

And there you were, in all your glory, dancing with bunch of worthless peasants.

Jeonghan could literally feel the blood in his veins boiling. How dare they put their filthy, sweaty little hands on your holy vessel? Were they really so dense to think someone like YOU would be interested in them?

"Pathetic losers." Furiously gulping down his drink only to smash the glass on the floor. Making any bystander jump away in fear.

Why, I, as a Demisexual, think Lucanis' romance was beautifully written (briefly as I could manage)

First, I'm going to say that demisexuality, like all human sexuality is a spectrum, my experiences are not universal through all ace people. This is my perspective on Rookanis, no other relationships - canon or not.

Secondly, I am not here to speak negatively about something someone enjoys, I'm just happy people have found something that brings them joy. I've seen too much of people taking a giant dump on things others are enjoying and honestly they should be ashamed of themselves.

Third, I do not play games for romances, they are a bonus to the roleplay. Often I skip them altogether, im demi and usually dont get that same rush others seem to about this option in games. Recently there have been two which I've really related to and enjoyed- Lucanis Dellamorte and Hans Capon. Both of these are not based on big sexy flirts but rather just letting them know you care. This is my take on Lucanis romance as a demi person, and if other disagree that's fine.

- my biggest enjoyment is that the whole relationship is just built on showing they care - none of Rooks lines are particularly flirty after the coffee with illario, none of his responces are either until the wall lean where Rook is mildly flirty (more just trying to reassure him) and he comes to them- that man makes the move and Rook responds, maybe a bit too eagerly but it is definitely him that makes the move. Rook is patient, isn't overly pushy with the romance and let's him move at his own pace - this is the perfect start to a relationship to me.

- A complaint I often see is that Lucanis flirts with Neve and not Rook (again I am speaking of a world Lucanis ends up with Rook not Neve), I personally don't see it as particularly flirting, I, as a demi, am far more overt and flirty with my friend than he is with Neve on the daily. He has a friend, a friend who is safe to have a bit of flirty banter with and he enjoys that. He does the same with Rook in the first coffee scene with Illario and only when he starts to develop real feelings does that stop. This is exactly how I process relationships- friends are fun to flirt with, they are safe and eveyone giggles and enjoys themselves, only once have I experienced attraction and it was overwhelming, I didn't know what to do with these new emotions of both love and lust and I barely spoke to the other person- yes I probably seemed closed off but I needed time to process and adapt to a new way of being. Also i had to learn how to read the other persons emotions, not that I'm bad at that in general but as it's all new and I'm processing my own.

- on that note, yes we can flirt, yes we can pull off wall leans, flirting and seduction and 'rizz' are not the same as feeling attraction, as wanting to take it further, as experiancing love and lust. Lucanis' wall lean scene, whatever your read on it, is in character and someone who used to work as a bartender in a strip club there is no way Lucanis, if read as demi himself, would be some naive man who doesn't understand human sexuality just because he doesn't enjoy it and hasn't indulged (depending on read). I did. I was tipped well because I knew how to flirt without wanting more.

- I go from 0 to 1000 too. Once I become certain in what the other person was feeling/ wanted I'm confident to express my emotions but until then I was very guarded and unsure, this is how I see Lucanis' , he had the trauma of the ossuary on top of all the new emotions and physical desires, he doesn't want to overwhelm himself and Rook, but once he's confident in his feeling and theirs he goes all in, he's not scared anymore and gives all of himself, willingly and openly and he isn't afraid to take the lead.

- I too show my love by sharing things I enjoy - he cooks Rook desert, under the guise of it being for everyone because he's still not certain of their feelings, he's self doubting, but he wants to try so he shares something he loves doing by making something to go with what Rook loves (chocolate in my Rooks case), I will say that I think this scene could have been written better esp if you have the coffee option as that can just read like he made it for himself, but this, to me, is a completly natural and normal way to express care for someone. Again, in the mind prison he escalates the relationship by saying 'it's better i stay here than risk losing you' and again with desert, he makes the move, Rook is patient, Lucanis makes all the big moves and Rook just responds with comfort and support. On that note, he would know what flowers Rook would want, if they would want so the line he has about Neve would contradict what we know about his relationship with Rook - the man is observant and he would know already.

Regardless of how to read him, I am so happy to finally have a romance in a game I can enjoy - not everything is designed to appeal to everyone, and that's ok. Lucanis was for me and people like me, for once I got to feel excited about a game romance and nothing can take that from me! 🫠🤣

How did the ROs figure out their queerness?

Ahhhh thank you both so much I love love love thinking about this. The ROs mean so much to me and I love thinking about them as people, with all of the experiences that comes with it. Answering below the cut because this is gonna be an essay <3

Beck - ever since Beck was little they knew that sometimes they felt like a boy and sometimes they felt like a girl and sometimes both or neither or something else entirely...but they also didn't fully realize that not everyone felt that way. If her sister got mad at her for stealing & wearing her clothes it was because her sister was mean, not because she was 'supposed to be' something else. If her parents got on their case for not conforming; well, their parents were always on their case. Not anything different when it was because they caught them kissing a boy. It wasn't really until late middle school that Beck fully understood that they were different.

To this day they don't really have the words to describe their gender. They just know it changes, and they do what they can to broadcast that to the people around them. Most people don't get him, but that's nothing new. His sexuality is even more complex too describe in exact words, for him, but he knows he's been attracted to all sorts of people. Queer fits, and he doesn't really feel the need to try to define it further than that.

Croft- unlike all of the other ROs, Croft is from modern day and unquestionably grew up on tumblr lmao. They are very knowledgeable about the spectrum of gender and sexuality. Unfortunately how they figured out that they're trans is a spoiler (it's a story that will be much more fun to read in game lol), but they figured out that they're on the ace spectrum in high school. All of their friends were obsessed with dating and sex and they thought they'd lost their minds. And then eventually (after answering one too many "who do you have a crush on???" questions) they went. Wait a second maybe I'm one one who's different here.

In college, though, they fell desperately and unquestionably in love with their only long term partner to date. She was mysterious and beautiful and a self-described witch...and one of their best friends. Croft was obsessed and realized that maybe they aren't actually fully asexual. Clearly there's the potential for attraction, if they're connected enough to someone. So they mentally adjusted the label they use to demisexual and went on their merry way.

F!Jay- gotta split Jay up because it deeply depends on their gender. But, as I think I've mentioned before, when f!Jay and Yasmin were younger teenagers they had a classic homoerotic teenage best friendship going on. Jay had a massive crush on Yas, they cuddled and held hands all the time, they were each other's first kiss (to ~practice~ ofc). And it was all totally platonic, because they were both girls!!!

Spoiler alert: it wasn't. When Yasmin and Seth started dating Jay felt weirdly jealous and brokenhearted. She talked to her mom about it, and Grace was just like. Honey. Baby girl. And Jay was like but I don't even like girls like that!!! She was in denial for a bit until she joined the co-ed baseball team, realized she spent a bit too long admiring all of her teammates in a way that definitely wasn't platonic, and then went. Oh. Huh.

M!Jay- he really doesn't think about this sort of thing the same way his female counterpart does. Jay is a pretty damn emotionally intelligent guy...but he doesn't really do introspection all that well. So his own path to self discovery was a lot more like. Damn my teammates have nice form. And look great in their baseball pants. And then proceeded to not really think all that deeply about it until he was (unknowingly) fawning over how good one of their male teammates looked and Seth was just like........."bro I love u no matter what you can tell me if you're gay."

And Jay was just silently like. What the hell do you mean I had a crush on your girlfriend for years. And out loud was just like. "I just respect him as a player I don't think he's hot." And Seth said "..........ok." Then Jay went home and thought about it longer and also went. Oh. Huh.

Perri- when it comes to their sexuality, Perri has always kind of suspected? They fall a little bit in love with everybody. Especially people who are nice to them. Not in a way where they assume people are flirting. In fact, Perri doesn't think they've ever been flirted with. No way. They're too awkward and weird. (Perri needs better self confidence). But people are just so pretty, and funny and sweet and interesting...and gender has never really been a limiting factor on that. They really figured it out definitively in middle school, though it took them until high school to actually put it into words and tell other people about being queer.

For Nonbinary!Perri, their gender journey was significantly more complicated than figuring out their sexuality. They tried on a couple of different identities and labels throughout their later middle school years. Having Beck as a best friend kind of made them actually think about their gender and how unhappy they were being seen as their assigned gender. They wondered if maybe they were just the opposite gender and were trans, but that made their skin crawl in the same way. They didn't want to be defined as anything, really. Just themself. So eventually they just figured that their gender is as queer as their sexuality and left it at that.

Ravi- okay so. I can't say a lot about Ravi because of spoilers. Which I'm very sorry about. BUT what I can say is that, for a long time, he figured he had to be gay. He had a boyfriend he loved, after all. If he's a guy attracted to other guys, then there isn't really any other option...right? Even if he noticed girls & other people the exact same way as he did most other boys. It wasn't the same as the heart-pounding, life-ending near obsession he felt for the boy he loved.

After his ex died, Ravi settled on the fact that he'd never fall in love again. (The man has a big storm coming). It wasn't until chatting with Jay and Yasmin about their own queerness that he realized that being bisexual was even an option. He felt kind of silly, after that. Of course it was. He quietly adopted the label and went about his day. It isn't like it matters, since he'll never date anyone else ever again ;)

Yasmin- probably had the easiest time of figuring herself out, save for maybe Croft. Yasmin is, if nothing else, deeply self-confident. She understands herself in a way few other people really do. She's known since she was little that she liked girls as well as boys. She has a distinct memory of telling her parents that she was going to marry Princess Jasmin someday. Her parents acted weridly concerned, until Yasmin clarified that it meant she'd have a pet tiger. They didn't realize that the 'marry a princess' part was just as important as the 'pet tiger' part.

As she grew older she understood that her attraction wasn't really limited to gender...but she still assumed she'd probably marry a man. It's still Easthaven, after all. Plus her parents weren't...the most accepting people in the world.

If Jay is a woman they had their 'friendship', and it made Yasmin blush and her heart beat faster, but she never really thought much of it. Yas is much more comfortable in her sexuality now--in the sense that she's not afraid of what the town would think if she dated a woman or nonbinary person--but...she's in a similar boat as Ravi. Never gonna have another long-term relationship, so it isn't really an issue? At least, that's what she thinks ;)

I'm gonna be honest, i haven't touched danganronpa in awhile, but something i am for sure is true, is that he's a sadistic little fucker.

Due to his sadistic personality, you talked to him about safe words, and set one up. Contrary to popular belief (if there's any), he actually listens to and memorizes these talks to a fault.

Even if he teases you relentlessly to the point you might cry, makes fun of you while you're struggling to do something, embarrass you infront of people, he does care about you. A lot.

Because let's be real, he is NOT that lovey dovey of a person, especially in public. He's still cruel and a liar, no matter how we look at him.

And you dating him is like a 'go ahead' for him to use you to his entertainment. To the point your friends comment about how your relationship with him seems toxic to them. But he is kinda nice. However you define the word 'nice', that is.

But aside all of that, let's get back on track. Going along the toxic gossip train, he's really into teasing, and pushing you to your limits.

(^) Meaning that he has a thing for places where you two could easily get caught at. Public bathrooms, when everyone is out of class, etc.

Even if you're loud or not, it really depends on his mood if he wants to make sure everyone hears what you're doing and who's doing it to you, or if he forces you to stay quiet, just to watch you struggle because of him.

hm. good question bc i really had to think about this bc if anyone can get away with platonically kissing someone it's 110% felix, and it does feel in character

i was on the fence until i remembered that the first (and only) guy i dated started off as a really good friend and before dating we'd kiss at parties and laugh it off the next day bc of the alcohol/atmosphere so it's very much realistic bc i did not notice for an entire semester😭

so let's discuss!!

felix would definitely hide behind the "for fun" defense by being as casual as possible with it. while out partying/drinking, he'd kiss reader so briefly the reader can barely register what's happening until it's happened. also this is mainly done after a particularly good/happy moment,, maybe after you two take a shot together, with that touch of adrenaline and the sting of alcohol still lingering there. would definitely do this if he felt jealous/saw someone checking out reader.

now, if we're talking actual, more intentional kisses that are harder to explain away....i think these are a definitely a lot rarer, but for sure have happened.

still uses the "for fun" argument if it's a party thing, like if everyone's kissing someone (like a NYE kiss) or it's bc of some party game, then he's lingering/being touchier than usual bc he can get away with it.

also not to take this a step further and make it even more difficult to justify, but i think there's a level of intimacy to it bc felix is so touchy/open with everyone, that eventually the only way to be particularly close to someone is to do more.

so,, and this is definitely the rarest type of kiss ( like it's happened at most 2-3 times) after drinking/smoking together, felix will kiss reader when they're completely alone, with no one to blame or goad you on or interrupt. these are slow and heavy. concentrated.

there's always an emotional component,, maybe reader had been poorly trying to hide their mood because felix had been a little too into being admired recently. or maybe felix feels left out about something and needs to find a way to feel even closer to reader.

after felix is definitely being more open than he usual is, telling you things like "i trust you more than i've ever trusted anyone, you know that right?" and "it's just you and me."

the first time this happened is the first time reader has a oh my god?? do i actually have a thing for felix? moment,, and after felix finally falls asleep, reader freaks out bc what if what happened ruined your friendship?

but then the next morning comes and it's like nothing happened, he doesn't even do that guy thing where they ignore you the next day, it's literally like nothing out of the ordinary happened and out of instinct, reader follows felix's lead

then reader convinces themselves that it's not that weird by telling themselves that felix has probably at least kissed most of the people that are around him for long enough which is kind of true and you know several people that he still hangs out with that he hooks up with on and off,,

so, with the amount of time you spend together,, it isn't strange. not when you know felix the way reader does.

So I've already seen this one pointed out, but in the new CG, Boothill's older human form doesn't really match what people thought it should. Of course it could just be neglect on Hoyo's part like I've seen speculated, but personally? With the other lore we got from this patch, combined with some of the stuff we already had, I'd love to think there is a possibility that is way, WAY more fun.

In Boothill's lc, we see him in the middle of his surgery where he threw away his flesh and bone body for steel and cybernetics. We know it was The Big Surgery and not just like some sort of tune up or modification because of the description attached to the lc:

Which is where a lot of the dissonance comes in, because in this lc, Boothill's hair is much, much longer than in the cg.

And as someone who also has super long hair, I can tell you that it would take like. Multiple years to grow it out to this length.

There's also the fact that these cybernetic arms don't even match, the lc is the one that looks like our Boothill does now. And there's no reason for Boothill's shirt to be ripped up and in tatters like that; it even states he takes off his clothes before the lc surgery. If it were a matter of Hoyo needing to censor nudity, there were plenty of other methods they could have used that would make more sense, like a hospital gown, a blanket, surgical partition, etc

When will I get to see Boothill with all his scars, Hoyo, when, quit cockblocking me!!! OTL

But there was also another piece of new lore this patch that hit me like a fuckin' brick- the fact that Boothill was tortured by the IPC.

He just drops this out of nowhere! Just says it and then moves right along!! BABY, PLEASE. I WANNA KNOW MORE SO GODDAMN BAD.

But anyway as Hydrachea pointed out to me, this means the torture definitely had to happen before the lc surgery, because being whipped with a belt soaked in saltwater (fucking OUCH) wouldn't work on someone with metal skin.

So, we know that the IPC did, at some point, capture Boothill. And this is reaching further back to previous patches, but we also know from the Luminary Wardance event in 2.5 that the IPC also dabbles in cybernetic arms, because of the one they foisted on Luka.

The model there is a new one they're debuting, but we see in a flashback sequence that the IPC has been part of the cybernetics game for at least 700-800 years, because they also manipulated Igor into getting one too, and this could have only happened before the Eternal Freeze on Jarilo-VI.

It's never stated just how old Boothill is, or how long ago the genocide on Aeragan-Epharshel took place.

But I doubt it was more than 700-800 years ago.

I really don't think Boothill is that old, or has been doing this for that long. So he definitely would have been captured at a point that the IPC was manufacturing cybernetic arms, and had a known history of amputating perfectly healthy patients to use them.

I wonder if all their test subjects were willing.

(This part is entirely unnecessary for the new cg showing Boothill being a forced lab rat as part of the IPC torturing him. But it is a fun, delightful, bloodily gruesome twist of the knife nonetheless.

Boothill was also betrayed by his own brothers-in-arms on Aeragan-Epharshel. For the IPC. Just saying.)

Okay okay okay!!!!! What are the other love languages????

Okay, getting into the other 3. Reminder I do not know them and am going purely off vibes. (Also not hunting for photos this time because I'm exhausted)

So I'll be real I think they all kinda lean into physical touch mainly out of necessity. We've all seen how they act (III and IV especially since they have the ability to interact with each other the most.) It is the easiest way to show affection when you can't speak or show expressions, and they clearly just have fun doing so as well. But I think while that is II's big one (see here for analysis), the others do definitely show their own.

IV seems to lean towards gift giving/receiving. He's the one that's most likely to pick up a fan gift, even picking up a headband someone tossed when they weren't supposed to accept them this tour (don't throw shit on stage kids.) He's the one to point out signs that catch his eye. Sure III has done this too, he's always up for shenanigans (more on that later) but our sweet Ivy stands out in this regard, interacting with fans on a slightly more personal level by pointing them out and noticing them specifically as a direct result of things that could be seen as gifts, be that a hat handed to him or a sign directed at him. (See here for further analysis)

III, and hear me out here, quality time. He's the one you'll see invading the others bubbles. Absolutely zero concept of personal space. But he doesn't do it necessarily to touch them. He just wants to be close. He wants to play games. He wants each moment to be entertaining and memorable. Whether that's acting out lyrics with II, playing cat and mouse with IV, vibing at the keyboard with Ves, dancing with the Espera, even yelling to the crowd! Ivy and Ves often seem perfectly content to stay in 1 spot for a little bit depending on the energy of the song, III seems to refuse to be left alone for more than 30 seconds at a time or he starts trying to open pits during Euclid.

Vessel is a little harder to pin down. Outside of his stage antics, we also get a glimpse at the way he loves through his lyrics. Personally, I would say he's more inclined to acts of service. He's all for physical and verbal forms as well, don't get me wrong, but from what I've seen he's more the type to show his love by making others feel as important and seen as possible. He's more than happy to step back and let the string beans take center stage. The Espera got a stage that lifts them up higher the second he got access to hydraulics. Drummer erasure? Not on Vessel's watch, he's climbing that podium and making sure attention is on II. He's had crew members on stage at least 3 times for summoning shenanigans. Their drum tech is also their merch model. Considering that Sleep Token's entire shtick is anonymity, Vessel does his best to make sure nobody goes unheard.

So earlier today I saw this post on Instagram musing about Sauron in The Rings of Power, labelling him as a tragic antihero, with a chance to be redeemed/saved but definitely doomed, and that making him quite attractive as character to the viewer public.

I was thinking about it and I don't really think this fits nor Sauron as character in Tolkien's original lore, but neither in The Rings of Power. Sauron is not an antihero. The way I see it - and I accept I might be wrong - an antihero is a character that has some redeeming qualities, someone who acknowledges that has done evil - which Sauron does - and might repent or not, but unlike Sauron they're not driven by malice, they do not actively seek to cause harm even if they will do at some point, and maybe they will act to repay/compensate the evil done in the past - whether is recent or not - or try to do so, even if it implies the cost of their own life. Morally grey characters, if you want, but with cracks of light in their grey armor.

If you're familiar with Game of Thrones, which is rich in these kind of morally grey characters, I see, for example, Theon Greyjoy or Jaime Lannister as examples of antiheroes. I also want to see an antihero in Raistlin Majere - if you're familiar with Dragonlance - even if he has done so much more evil than the other examples. But the more I try to apply it to Sauron, the less it convinces me.

Maybe Halbrand could've been that antihero they're seeking, if Halbrand had been real. If he had wanted to take the redeeming path he claimed to have when Galadriel was still open to him.

But there's no Halbrand. There's only Sauron. And you can see all his choices as Halbrand, even if claimed to try to find his peace, are poor choices, because he's driven by selfishness: letting Diarmid die and getting the Kingfisher heraldry instead of helping him, abandoning the castaways in the raft to save his own skin, stealing the guild crest instead of earning it, and over all, faking a Southlander king's identity even if reluctant at the beginning. Now, if Halbrand was real, for how much pain he might have caused in the past, this doesn't look like a redeeming path. This doesn't look like antihero, or someone who can be redeemed/saved. Neither is he doomed. Because these are his personal choices, and he could do differently, only he just doesn't want to.

As Annatar, he shows more clearly what he is: a villain, a pure chaotic evil being. The Rings of Power works wonderfully showing he's incredibly complex, and cunning, and clever; not one-dimensional, not the typical mwahahaha villain he was hinted in Peter Jackson's movies because the narrative didn't allow him to be expanded further, but a villain, nevertheless. He does evil, he causes pain, and he does it for his agenda, because he wants it this way, even if he believes otherwise.

The discourse about wanting to heal Middle Earth, creating perfect peace and rejecting Morgoth's sadism and cruelty is just the discourse of a narcissist that believes his own lies and thinks he can do better. Celebrimbor tells him: "You're truly the Great Deceiver. You can even deceive yourself." He really believes in his own bullshit. He thinks he can do better, if only everyone else bend to his will and do what he says when he says so.

Shipping is fun and nice but if you watch season 2 with attention it's horrifying to see what Sauron really is throughout his actions, even if wrapped in the fairest of forms. His cruelty, brutality and outright Machiavellian way with which he manipulates and punishes are painful to watch, specially in the case of Celebrimbor, whom he also admired as a craftsman. The repugnant and sadist way in which he tortures and brutalizes Galadriel with Morgoth's crown because she has rejected him again was the foulest allegory of rape I've ever seen, in an universe where you'll never get sexual scenes, while loyal to Tolkien's lore. He claims not wanting to hurt her, but moments later, he enjoys her agony. And the way he excuses and absolves himself of all his sins because he wants to heal Middle Earth - save, and rule, he sees no difference - and because he was brutalized by Morgoth is also painful to watch.

Tolkien wrote - more or less - that he had served/suffered so much under Morgoth's grip that he fell easily back into evil, for he didn't want to see anymore other way of doing things. He could've done differently, but the exit to his labyrinth was to throw himself at the feet of Manwë and the other Valar and be judged, accepting whatever punishment went to him. But he didn't, for he's unmeasurably proud and would not suffer such humiliation. Beautiful how the show puts in Halbrand's mouth the words "and I knew if ever I was to be forgiven that I had to heal everything that I helped ruin", nice excuse to not go to bow to the Valar. I like to think he's also terrified of the idea he might be cast into the void where Morgoth is now, and be reunited with his former torturer. He made no secret about how much Morgoth still haunts him. But all this sadness and suffering absolve him of his present sins? Of course not. But he thinks they do.

In the end what we have is a cruel, prideful, sadistic, vain and narcissistic villain who has convinced himself that the world will be better when he rules it, and in his mind the order he wants is the suppression of Middle-Earth's people's free will. That doesn't mean he could not have good feelings; as I said, he felt respect and admiration for Celebrimbor, he rejoices at the beauty and peace in Númenor and Eregion - which he'll later destroy - and whatever he feels for Galadriel is genuine as well - it is moving to see how easily he admits and displays his feelings -, but that works as long as they respond to his wishes. When this turns differently, he starts breaking his toys, even if with Galadriel he takes a great amount of patience.

But these genuine feelings are not redeeming qualities. Neither is he doomed, as I said before, he could walk away from this path, he just doesn't want to. He thinks he's the good guy, compared with the monstrosity Morgoth was, he only will use whatever means he needs to meet his ends. And there is not love - the way we understand it, a selfless act of self-delivering - in anything he does, neither towards Galadriel who gets a special treatment in comparison to other characters - Mirdania for example - because unlike the latter, Galadriel means something to him, he sees someone with a similar pride, a similar ambition. What he fails to see is that Galadriel is not driven by evil and malice, because he's unable to recognize that evil and malice in himself.

So, in the end, not antihero, but villain. The worst kind, refusing to see that the real illness of Middle-Earth is himself. As Galadriel very well puts in, "You want to heal Middle-Earth? Heal yourself."

We know he won't listen, and that does not make him tragic either, for tragedy is something uncontrolled, left for the fates, and he is conscious of every step he takes, even if when something fails he lets himself get taken in a wave of rage and despair, as the pathetic being he really is.

The real tragic antihero here has always been Adar. At least him, for much pain and destruction he might have caused serving in Morgoth's/Sauron's armies, wanted something better for his Uruk, and was able to put his pride aside for a different outcome, even if it was too late for him. Now that's a redeeming quality.

• Whenever you have mood changes, especially if it’s when you get mad at someone when they pushed your buttons far too much, Guest is right behind you to help you, and have you calm down, and oddly enough, he is able to, it’s like his magic power, you also have the same affect on him when his teammates are goofing off, you both calm each others storm down, you both are the suns.

• I definitely feel like he would find it so adorable how you can’t tell jokes and teases apart, not in a bad way of course, he is always there to tell you the differences if you happen to get stumped whether someone was messing with you or not, and if it hurt your feelings, just go to Guest and he’ll take care of it, he would do anything for you, you are the only person that truly matters to him in this hell you both are in.

• You both share cabins together, and you both make it look cozy on the inside so it feels like you both are at home and feel safe, he would get you whatever you wanted, and i definitely think that he brought(or bought) blankets, books, games, etc just for you! And you were able to choose what you wanted, you guys would also have movie nights whenever there wasn’t gonna be a round happening (which happens rarely) so you both take the time to spend your entire day in your cabin together to watch movies and cuddle.

• He knows that you don’t like insects, like spiders, cockroaches, you name it. You won’t see them anywhere, and if they are anywhere near you he makes sure that you don’t see them, so he’ll stomp on them with his shoe and kick them to the corner or somewhere further from you, somewhere where you won’t see them so you don’t get freaked out.

Your Abilities: You would have 3 different types of abilities, one of them would be for slashing the survivor, you would most likely have some sort of sword, perhaps a samurai or two, the second ability you would have the ability to bring minions… similar to c00lkidd and 1x1x1x1 but you would summon them by shoving your swords into a survivor and once they’re dead they turn into minions that’ll attack survivors, the third ability you would have is where you can give hallucinations to the survivors where there would be a fake image of you that they would believe is you, and once they touch/stun the fake image you would be able to teleport and then instantly kill them. You would be extremely powerful in the game compared to the other killers.

Dynamics w/ other characters:

John Doe is one of your best friends, you both met when you got forsaken at the same time with him, before you met Guest 1337, even when you get together with him he was the most supportive person when you told him.

And Jason is another good friend of yours, you both are teammates together, and you guys click together so well, you spend a lot of your time with him as well, he even developed feelings for you but his mother said no, so he couldn’t really confess but he was still allowed to be your friend!

You are also pretty good with Two Time as well! You both are similar in many ways so you both were able to bond together easier than most people.

However with Elliot, you both are enemies, he’s never liked you since he first met you, you don’t really understand why, so you don’t really bother with him much, and you make sure to kill him at the start or somewhere in the middle of the round.

Headcanons

• I just had to ship you with him 😭 And I have so many reasons why I did, firstly, you would be new to the entire game, so when 1x found this out he made sure to go after you, and after that, he mostly targets you, and it leaves you pissed off but for some reason, he enjoys it every single time to annoy you.

• He doesn’t like it whenever you “dehumanize” yourself just to please other people, and when people keep expecting you to do it, he’ll take care of them for you, he doesn’t like how you would just do anything for anyone, especially when they don’t deserve it.

• He would most likely be annoyed at first when you don’t take him seriously, but after dating you for a while, he understood why you didn’t take him too seriously at times since you couldn’t tell the difference between when someone was joking to them being serious, he helps you see more clearly after that, which is a really big help for you!

• He probably helps you with controlling your anger, he knows what it’s like to be angered, you both share that together a lot, it’s one of the main reasons you both are dating. I feel like he would love watching you write and draw whatever your doing, and he loves it when you ask him to see if it’s good, bonus points if you draw or write something with him in it.

• I feel like he also doesn’t like crowded places, he seems like someone who likes to be in a quiet place with a few people, I feel like you guys would just hang out somewhere privately and read together, with you laying your head on his shoulder, he enjoys it whenever you hug him.

• I feel like he can easily get used to you, you’re one of the people who doesn’t annoy him as much as others do, and he’s finally happy to know that there’s someone who will understand him when others couldn’t.

Your Abilities: You would have 3 abilities almost like the rest of the survivors, your 1st ability would be to heal other players, you would have a med kit with you at all costs, and whenever a survivor is injured you throw the midkit their way, your 2nd ability is to stun the killer, you would most likely have a gun, but you would get two bullets so if you missed the fist time you can shoot the second time before it goes in cool down for 20 seconds, the last ability you would have is to heal yourself, you would have something to eat to bring your health back up whenever you were struck by the killer, and you can run while you eat. You’re one of the rarest survivors ngl, and you are extremely useful as well.

Dynamics w/ other characters

You would be good friends with both John and Jane Doe! They are both good friends to you, even though they are killers, so while there aren’t rounds that are going on you usually hang out with them, and they’re arguments are so fun to listen to, and all three of you do the most craziest stuff ever.

I feel like you wouldn’t interact with c00lkidd as much, since he looks like a spider, he creeps you out a lot, and he likes it (😭), whenever he gets the chance to see you he tries to put an actual spider on your head, and you would run away before he could, and if he keeps trying to come at you, you stun him with your gun LMAO.

You would be good teammates with Builderman he always has your back during rounds, and he even protects you from c00lkidd as well, you both always succeed whenever you are paired together.

"It was fun, but it got a little boring by the end" is perhaps the most common review of Veilguard's combat that I've seen. No one seems to have strong opinions about it, overall. As far as things to have beef with this game over, it doesn't even make the shortlist, really. I mean, it was fine.

But hell, I'm not above being petty, especially when it comes to this game. So amidst all the other things wrong with this game, here's my hot take: Bioware doesn't understand RPG combat, and why it's useful in, you know, RPGs, as they ostensibly claim to make.

This didn't start with Veilguard, though Veilguard is obviously the subject of this post. It was apparent since before DAI that they were gravitating towards action combat, and I had a lot of problems with Inquisition's system at the time. But Veilguard took it even further, doubling down on their pivot away from RPG mechanics. And, well, I don't think a proper RPG system could've saved this game. But it could've given the game something it desperately lacks - replayability.

RPGs are long games, are driven by the premise that most players will not follow the exact same path towards the end, and above all, are designed to be played in as many ways as possible. This is why character classes exist; why there are multiple weapons to choose from, and why there are more party members to pick from than can fit in your party at once. This works when you consider the other hallmarks of RPGs: different story paths, dialogue choices, and romance options. Variation outside of combat compliments variation within it, and this makes a good RPG something you can play several times and have a completely different experience each time.

And more than that, the mechanics of an RPG compliment a game that could take anywhere from 80-100 hours to complete. You NEED that level of choice within the game mechanics to get you through that long a game, and Veilguard's problem is that it has the length of an RPG, but the combat system of your average 30-40 hour action game.

Of course, there are excellent action games out there that are also up in the 100-hour range, but what these games do that Veilguard did not, is put the majority of focus on their combat systems. Elden Ring is probably the best example of this, but of course we wouldn't want a Dragon Age that's like Elden Ring, really - Dragon Age needs to have more going for it than just combat. And if you can't build your whole game around its combat system, then you need something that has the longevity to sustain a 100-hour runtime.

Everyone bemoaning the lack of direct companion control is absolutely correct - their lack of damage output and usefulness compared to the player renders them basically meaningless in combat. But what this also does is make any kind of customization of their abilities or their gear next to pointless. Even if you could replay this game and build them differently - which you can't, let's be clear - doing so would not make a single iota of difference in combat.

And Rook themselves - well, consensus is that the game starts to get boring about 40 hours in. That's roughly the place where you've gotten enough skill points to specialize in one thing, and though, sure, you could theoretically refund all your points and try something else, by that time you've gotten enough points to acquire all the skills in the general tree anyway. It doesn't help that the gear system is such that whichever items you happen to get early will probably be the ones you end up sticking with. It definitely doesn't help that the enemies in this game severely lack variation, and once you've fought one dragon, you've fought them all.

You know what would have helped? Giving people multiple ways to approach combat. Giving us enemies that require a different approach. Giving us companions that you can build out in interesting ways. Giving us, in short, a reason to play this game again. Because if you're going to create an 80-100 hour game that has very little else going on mechanically, then the very least you can do is make sure your combat is actually fun for the full 100 hours.
