Several people have pointed out my tags, but I forgot there was a tag limit and tumblr deleted a bunch of info (and I wasn't expecting people to read them! Whoops!), so I've written them up into a more coherent form for you all (with links to more angst!)

First off, a disclaimer: While I did do a shitton of maths to get this as accurate as I could, I was also cribbing from headcanon and guesstimates and dubiously canon novels, and then took artistic license with the diagram anyway. I do not claim this to be 100% accurate, I was just Overcome By Emotion and needed to get it out. Feel free to let me know if I've missed something, but please note this art was more about representation than wholly accurate data. (Sorry, Spock!)

I drew this after watching the short film Unification that came out last year. I don't usually acknowledge Generations for the sake of my own sanity (if I think about it for too long I will cry) but the short film made me think about both Jim AND Spock's deaths (and also the fact that Bones wasn't there, which I am. so cool and fine with. Not.) and that sent me into a little spiral at 4am (pictured below).

I scribbled this in my planner in the faint glimmer of moonlight, half-hanging out of my bed, looking up dates and becoming more and more distraught as my cat looked on in bemusement. My initial thoughts were as follows:

Hang on, how old was Jim when he died?

EXCUSE ME??

How old were Spock and Bones when they bit it??

WHAT??

How long did they all actually know each other for???

WHAT THE FUCK??????

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY WERE ONLY TOGETHER* FOR 25 YEARS?????

THAT CAN'T BE FUCKING RIGHT.

And then I cried for a good while. And eventually slept. And then woke up and did even more maths.

My calculations were as follows:

Jim was 32 at the start of the 5ym, Spock was 35, and Bones was 38. According to the dates on the Memory Alpha Wiki (death date minus birth year, counting all canon time travel etc as negligible since it's only a few months difference at most afaik), Jim lived to be 60 (not including his time in the Nexus, since that's more like the afterlife to me), Bones lived to be 141, and Spock lived to be 161 (that's a little confusing if you look at the wiki, since he died in the alternate universe and the stardates over there are different, but trust me). Bones lived for 75 years after Jim disappeared, and Spock lived for 98 (23 of those after Bones died, too). Almost an entire century. :)

They were only together as a trio for ~25 years. Jim took command of the Enterprise in 2265, and went into the Nexus in 2293. That's 28 years, minus 3 for the post-5YM/pre-TMP estrangement. Twenty five years. That's all. That's. Not fucking fair. That's less than half Jim's life. He lived over half his life before meeting Spock, and having his two best friends - his heart and mind - actually with him. And then. And then…

He did know Bones for longer. I headcanon that Jim and Bones were friends, or at least friendly acquaintances for ~11 years before Bones becomes CMO (and thus meets Spock), so that's their overlap on the diagram - of course, there was probably some time together without Spock later on but not enough to change that amount drastically. Plus, most of their friendship before Bones became CMO was likely long-distance and intermittent, given that they weren't (afaik) ever stationed together (and I tend to think Bones didn't even join the fleet till shortly before he became CMO). So that means they were together for 36 years at most (just over half Jim's life).

Jim and Spock have the smallest overlap. I think I factored in SNW and estimated it at about 5 years cumulative (the years they know each other in SNW + a bit extra just in case). So that gives them 30 years total together (exactly half Jim's life!)

And then there's Spock and Bones. Hoo fucking boy. They met because of Jim. They lived 25 years of their life with him. The three of them, working so well together, balancing each other out. And then Jim is gone. By my estimate, it was just the two of them for 75 years. Three times the amount of time they were all together. And all of this post-Jim's disappearance. They knew each other far longer than either of them ever knew Jim, and their relationship after his disappearance must have been altered by his absence, but they did stay good friends - and then there's also the fact that Spock could feel Jim was 'alive' somewhere, but had no idea where or how to get to him. Just that he was happy. Without them. If I think about that too much I will start biting.

And also. I really can't get over the fact that Bones lived so long. I expected Spock to outlive him by a wide margin (and I bet they all expected him to), but no. Both Bones and Spock lived for well over double Jim's lifespan, and lived without him for triple (nearly quadruple, in Spock's case) the time they knew him. Jim dying at 60 is young, they could have had so many more years together - they probably thought they would, after cheating death so many times and still coming back together! But Jim dies, and Spock must have, on some level, expected to outlive him, but not so soon. For a Vulcan, he has a remarkably short life, and Bones was alive for so long and they were together but without Jim, and then - even worse! - Bones dies and Spock leaves for Romulus (and ultimately another fucking universe) because there's no one left for him anymore. And he takes that pendant of Jim with him, and (I like to think) still has an impression of Bones in his head from the katra-sharing, and he lives 23 more years without them with him, not really, but they're still a fundamental part of him. Even though they were only really all together for 25 years and it's been almost a century since he last saw Jim, his Jim. Twenty five years. That's all they get.

*when I say together, I mean on friendly terms, in fairly regular contact - essentially that they were in each other's lives. That's why I'm not counting the pre-Motion Picture divorce era, and why my numbers for their one-on-one time are hazy, since I imagine they might have had other falling-outs or time alone, and Bones and Jim especially might have gone long stretches without communicating before Bones became CMO, since they weren't living near each other - and I think it's likely Spock and Bones did so post-Jim, too, especially since Spock became an ambassador and likely moved around a lot. At least they had their post-katra-sharing mind link, though.

That's what I was trying to articulate with this art - how lifespans can overlap, and how you can never match your life up perfectly to someone else's, and you'll always end up leaving or being left behind, eventually, even if you all want to stay together. I was thinking about my parents as I drew this, and how I will, most likely, outlive them by a wide margin. I have no idea how long I'll live without my current friends, too. It's bittersweet, to me. I know it's impossible to keep even one person close for your entire life, but I still wish I could.

Spock outlived both his best friends, and both he and Bones far outlived Jim. The three of them were together for those precious 25 years. It's at once so long, and not nearly long enough.

i've been thinking a LOT about this and want to get it all out so here it is. if dean was truly in love with cas, he would not have hesitated to tell him so when he literally knew cas was about to DIE. we don't see that. we see shock, grief, disbelief (an angel loves me!), we see him trying desperately to process his best friend is leaving him but nowhere does dean say, or imply, with his eyes, or words, that he's in love with cas. of course he loves cas - cas is family - and cas is not exactly his brother, (closest is brother-in-arms), despite his insistence in an earlier episode - but he's not in the kind of soul-crushing love that cas is with him. he's not in love with cas, and can't be, because he's already in love with sam.

when dean dies, he gets as close as he possibly can to confessing to sam he's in love with him without actually crossing the line. he would never to that to sam - he would never do to sam what cas did to him - because he would NEVER do anything to make sam lose his agency (sidebar: not that cas doesn't respect dean. but his love confession is almost wish fulfillment - i'm going to confess to dean i love him and go out in a blaze of glory and then leave without dean ever even having to reciprocate because i know he doesn't love me back. and he's absolutely right).

dean has already had years and years of not having his own agency from john his whole fucking life! john did whatever he wanted to dean and dean took it because like hell was he going to subject sam to that bullshit. which brings us to sam and dean's childhood - not much is known of their early years before sam went to stanford and that's fully on purpose. we can almost see dean as not only a brother figure to sam but also a father figure. john leaving for weeks maybe even months at a time - how the hell did dean and sam manage to survive? by dean doing whatever he had to do. emphasis on whatever.

you see, john absolutely knows that dean is beautiful. whether you read their relationship as purely abusive or abusive with a sexual component - dean definitely did questionable things to get food on the table for sam, an aspect that's more in fanon that canon but reads true to the heart of the show. sam doesn't know because dean wanted a normal childhood for him. and dean would rather die and go to hell for 800 years than force sam to make a choice, make any choice, of a romantic and/or sexual nature related to him.

back to dean's death. this is again the closest thing to a love confession that dean can make - my baby brother - take out the word brother and it would be not only romantic but stunningly true - he raised sam, this child who grew up to be a man, this child who loves him - waiting outside sam's dorm for hours - can you picture him pacing in the snow, waiting for the one thing he wants but can't have??? why does that sound familiar? oh, right, because that's what cas said but in dean and sam's case it would be actually true. how cruel and unbelievably insane it is to find your soulmate in your brother, the one person you have that you love unconditionally, not just because they are your family but because you are in love with them, and you can never have them as long as you live.

re: american gothic and soulmatism. very different from crimson peak where thomas fully realizes the unhealthiness of the codependent incestuous relationship with his sister and wants to be free and happy with edith. but sam and dean don't want to be free. in their minds, they already are free as long as they have each other and only each other. not getting in all the other romantic relationships that the brothers have with other people bc it would take too long, but they already fulfill that need for each other and don't need anyone else...like i'm sorry i love my sister but i want to get married one day to someone else. if you read their relationship as purely platonic, it doesn't work at ALL.

the kripke early seasons fully leaned into the gothic horror aspect of it all and incest is definitely a part of that...dean and sam literally cannot live without each other. they can't do it! sam dies in dean's arms and dean can't even wait five fucking minutes without making a deal with a demon lmao. he can't eat. he can't sleep. their love is a perpetual resurrection; they keep killing each other and bringing each other back to life. because they don't know how to stop. they are a singular mangled fucked up entity. i read a fic once where the author described sam as hating his own body because it was separate from dean's and dean's whole presence was a phantom pain. and yeah. just yeah. they can't live without each other because they ARE each other.

seasons 1-3 to me are spn at its soul. that's it. cas only works as a side character, if he's a brother (like, purely platonically) to both sam and dean or just unrequited romantic love for dean. the trope of an angel falling in love with a faithless man who can't pray only works if dean hasn't been in love with sam the whole time.

I dreamt Sam, Dean and Cas were all standing at the edge of a cliff and Cas had to sacrifice himself for something. Dean was extremely upset by it, and gave Cas a Bro Protection Ring to keep him safe which made Sam look very exasperated. Also, the ring looked exactly like my friend's engagement ring.

A wooden platform then started lowering Cas from the cliff to the swamp below, and the lower it went the more upset Dean became. When it reached the bottom Deam jumped down to the "shore" of the swamp and went in and toward the platform, instantly becoming covered in mad and swampness. He was desperate by then and tried telling the person taking Cas on the platform to take him instead but Cas just looked at him sadly, showed him the ring again, and drifted away.

(I feel like it's important to note I haven't watched any Supernatural since 2013 and also that I never shipped destiel???)

I couldn't remember what happened then, so I went and found the video.

Basically, Jensen was getting annoyed about fans' requests for him to be their "dancing monkey". They gave him a script to play a scene from Hitch and he refused. Then Misha appeared out of nowhere, gave him a kiss and suddenly Jensen was all up for playing the scene.

"I've just spend 10 or 15 minutes squashing the whole Dean and Cas situation so huh they'd like us to make out now."**

Then they play the scene and Jensen is like:

Afterward they have a long discussion about kissing with tongue and their mutual experience with that in the business.

They're still discussing it when Jensen has to go, which is why Misha looks so sad at the end.

**Sidebar here, but I've just rewatched that panel and it hit me in the face just how far we (and Jensen and Misha) have come.

It was a time when people used to cheer when Jensen said things like "the whole Dean and Cas thing has been blow out of proportion, so Misha and I were glad that they snuffed it a little bit (in season 9)" or "I don't think there is anything secret about their relationship even though a lot of peope wish there was. And I certainly know that Misha and I don't play that so..."

Shipping was so very taboo at the time. I used to hate how people got mad everytime someone dared to talk about it or how they cheered everytime an actor said something that went against it.

I feel like this has progressively disappeared since Cas' confession and with Misha's support. I mean, nowaday Jensen himself talks openly about destiel and offers his support and validation to it (which is not to say he necessarily likes it btw).

We've come so so far and this makes me very happy^^

If you are losing your mind at the possibilities of the Misha Collins on The Boys S5 news (I think the JPad appearance was already in discussions previously), and you haven't seen The Boys I think there's some context non-viewers need to know. Whether it be before they start watching the show as a whole, or if they plan to speculate or watch clips when S5 airs.

I cannot under-stress how this is this is the most deranged show I have ever seen.

To that point (and these are just some spoiler-y highlights):

I don't say "most deranged show I've ever seen on tv", not just because it's on Amazon. This show could never air on cable tv, unless it was edited beyond recognition.

Sure, it'll throw you one-off insane sight gags, like Butcher brandishing a baby with laser vision to laser their attackers to death. It also will go for long-run arcs you'd never see on network tv, like the Aquaman-type's multiple season, bestiality-arc, which isn't relegated to just one type of sea life.

Speaking of sea life - PETA was outraged by this show a few years back when one character was shown eating a living octopus on camera. This show has about an average of 1 violent crime to sea life per season.

I'm not actually sure any of our heroes have made it through an entire episode without being covered in blood at some point. If they have, then they have probably experienced or stumbled into some uncomfortable sexual experience.

This show has basically no qualms showing the amount of kinky shit people with unique powers, near-indestructible bodies, and almost no moral qualms will get up to.

I strongly recommend against drinking milk at any point while you watch this show. You will probably regret it.

You think live bees and real glass from SPN are bad? This show had an episode take place predominantly at an orgy. It was filmed while Covid was going strong, so people kept thinking they were grabbing hand sanitizer, and they actually had squirted lube on their hands because there was so many bottles of both everywhere.

To be clear, the orgy itself served mostly the purpose of a comics callback, and happened mainly in the background while our main characters acted. It was also inexplicably the emotional crux of the season.

Jensen Ackles will do some of the best nuanced acting with micro expressions you've seen talking about his toxic relationship with his father. This will be preceded by an episode where he's found jerking off while insisting he needs more lube to fuck the elderly women masturbating on the bed behind him.

Kripke will not hesitate to make allusions to SPN in the worst way. One of the first scenes our heroes talk with Ackles's character, he's classic Dean, eating takeout in a hotel room, and sure, he's drinking some liquor. But at the same time, he's making racist/sexist comments and crushing up pills with a giant hunting knife so he can snort them.

Kripke tends to be particularly cruel to former SPN actors - On the spin-off show Gen V, one of them had his dick exploded. And on this most recent season of The Boys, he had the actor who played Chuck/God, use his superpowers to pleasure himself naked onscreen and then his character was murdered multiple times over. They made at least two references to his SPN role too, from walking in on him saying "my god" in French, to saying he was up in heaven pleasuring himself now.

I could keep going and going with examples and probably never run out. But here's my point.

This is one of the best satires I've ever seen. It's sharp and outrageously funny, and so timely. But it's also the best show I can never recommend to anyone if I'm not sure they're a little bit of a terrible person, too.

So yes, we might get sort sort of AU Destiel onscreen. We'll almost certainly get more SPN references than we ever wanted.

But if you think for one second that Kripke isn't also going to put Jared and/or Misha in the most uncomfortable scenes that you can imagine (or more likely, the ones you can't), think again.

And that in all reality, as much as we speculate, it's likely none of us are ready for what we're actually going to get onscreen.

gen. another cm crossover, but this time salmondean kidnap a couple of the feds to keep from being caught. great stuff. i liked the bro dynamic and i loved their interactions with the feds. and it's more case focused than some similar pieces.

and finally. so the thing is, i've already recced trapdoor by hal_incandenza. but i just cannot allow it to go un-recced for the casefic enjoyers out there. it's a rewrite of seasons thirteen and fourteen in episode format, with whole new motw episodes. they're so good you guys. like it's an overarching destiel plot fic, but it also has multiple whole case fics embedded inside. like, six of them. highly highly recommend.

I just LOVE trying to guess things about Destiel.

Like when Dean gave Cas the mixtape? Or when did they watch Tombstone? When did they watch other movies and how? (Because there was no TV at least until Scoobynatural I think).

Most importantly when Cas discovered he was in love with Dean? Or when Dean discovered he was in love with Cas? How they both handle those feelings? Did they really knew they were in love? And on and on.

I just looooove finding clues and guessing things. It’s not really easy actually, but mostly I choose what I prefer, because why not. For instance, to watch Tombstone, Cas and Dean saw it on Dean's computer in Dean's room and on his bed, because I prefer it that way. And because it's totally likely.

I'm like a FBI agent and my case is Destiel.

Haven't watched the show yet but my friend has been bugging me relentlessly to give it a try and so I'm gonna binge it tonight.

I do already Know some stuff though, having spent the last hour on tumblr which I'm gonna list here. Since this is apparently the go-to blog for when you don't wanna get beaten up.

1. So it's about detectives who are also dead who are also boys. Dunno how the dead part works. "My prized handkerchief has been stolen in Swedish Hell, sirs. Would you mind retrieving it for me?? Oh, you can have my pet mummies and eternal gratitude in return!"

2. There's a girl called Crystal Palace Surname-von Hoverkraft. I feel sorry for her, actually.

3. Some king of cats kick-starts one of the detectives' homo arc. Dunno how that works either but I'm here for it. Apparently some bird??? helps??? Who does it help, I have no idea but it Helps.

4. There's another girl with white hair who turns that Crystal girl gay. Atp is there any straight character here?? Not that I'm complaining, of course.

5. There's a better version of the destiel confession somewhere. Boy, am I ready to get over that trauma.

How I feel about Buddie...

You guys have been warned, this is a long post.

I've always liked 911 and was a casual viewer but never got involved in the fandom or anything. Of course I knew about Buddie, but I personally never saw it. Buck and Eddie have always acted like best friends and do stuff best friends do. I have never seen any scene that could be interpreted as romantic, except maybe for the "you want to go for the title" scene. But to me it wasn't enough to ship them, especially since it was the only scenes in their hundreds of scenes together that could be seen as romantic.

That being said, I've always thought the ship was cute, and I understand it because who doesn't like a good friends to lovers storyline?

I just never got involved in the fandom because their behavior reminded me of the Stucky and Destiel fandom, which were chaotic experiences for me. Some people just don't know how to handle non canon ships and act entitled, complain to the showrunners and harrass the cast. I've always tried to avoid fandoms like that, but wasn't against the idea of Buddie as a ship.

The 911 Lone Star crossover episode for me was the confirmation that Buck was into men. To me, it was obvious they confirmed he was into men but hadn't set up a storyline yet. So naturally I thought... if they set up a storyline it will be with Eddie. There was no doubt it my mind.

So fast forward, a few years, I wasn't really watching season 7 and then I see all the fuss from Buddie shippers I follow, and it makes me watch the sneak peek video from 7x04 and I'm like....For sure Buck is being jealous right? (it was the scene where Eddie interrupted Tommy giving Buck a tour)

So I decided to watch the episode convinced this was going to be the episode where they confirmed Buddie, but I was also very cautious because Buddie shippers had cried wolf too many times before.

So I was careful, but I was also convinced that this was it: "Buck was going to get jealous of Eddie hanging out with Tommy and then confess his feelings or the other way around".

And that's actually what was happening until the end of the episode, we saw Buck get jealous, and most of us assumed he was being jealous about Eddie.

We didn't figure out until the end of the episode that it was all about Tommy.

And that's the beauty of that episode because you think you're watching something when in fact you're watching something else and when you rewatch some scenes you understand it, and that plot twist was written so beautifully.

So we have Buck and Tommy have a heart to heart in Buck's kitchen and they kiss. And what a kiss... the kiss itself was Nice but the look Buck gave Tommy after the kiss was breathtaking.

From that moment on, I was rooting for them.

But I still had Buddie at the back of my mind because I was thinking, what if this is all temporary and they're planning to break them up to set up a buddie storyline? So I shipped it but didn't want to get my hopes up.

This feeling got bigger when I started watching 7x05 and I saw the way their first date ended. I thought... this is it, we might not see Tommy again, what a shame. But then Buck talked to Maddie about his date and confessed it was with Tommy. And Maddie asked: "so tell me about the hot pilot", and I thought this isn't how they'd talk about a character we never see again. But I didn't know for sure.

Maybe they were setting up a Buck x Eddie storyline....

I changed my mind when I saw Buck's coming out scene to Eddie, the scene was beautiful and at that point I still was thinking Buddie was a possibility. But one line made me think that Buddie wasn't happening: "I can't stop thinking about him".

No writer would put a line like that and have Oliver say it like that with that look, if they were thinking Buck and Eddie would have a romantic scene in the future. And if you do write that, you would get a jealous reaction from the other character, not a "You should call Tommy".

And then I was conforted in my feelings when the writers doubled down and had Buck invite Tommy to Maddie's wedding. Buck could have just apologized and asked Tommy on antoher date, but no, he invited him to his sister's wedding.

There has been absolutely no hint of a romantic relationship between Buck and Eddie throughout the season. There has never been a sign of jealousy from Buck or Eddie's side when they were dating Tommy, Marisol. If they had been setting up that storyline, the writers would put some hints here and there. Instead, they shared meaningful scenes like best friends do.

I never had anything againdt Buddie as a ship, I was even open to it, but all the times I thought Buddie was going to happen, it was because of the fandom, not because of something I saw in the saw...To me Buddie is and will stay a fanon ship.

TL:DR: I don't hate the ship, I find it cute but the behavior of some shippers has made me want to stay away from the fandom. And when I thought Buddie might be happening, the writers showed us they had long term plans for Bucktommy.
