I'm always curious to hear what other Trek fans, especially queer Trek fans, think about our place in Trek history and how we fare as the queer participants within our fandom. What have your experiences been like?

Overwhelmingly I've found a great reception and a welcoming attitude, but I admit that has increased considerably since the 90s. However, there are still some Trek fans who seem to be vehemently in denial about queer history in Star Trek, or the fact that anyone who has worked on Trek has pro-LGBT attitudes. This always surprises me considering some of the blatant queer content we have already seen in Star Trek such as the Jadzia Dax and Lenara Kahn kiss.

Anyway, I enjoyed the discussion that followed and seeing the overwhelming outpouring of support coming from Star Trek fans in response to this thread.

Here was my two cents contribution:

"No, what they said was factual.

Have you forgotten Nichelle Nichols was indeed an African American woman in the core seven bridge crew back in 1966?

Or the fact that Gene Roddenberry went out of his way to write The Motion Picture Novel, creating the term "T'hy'la: friend, brother, lover" so that fans could choose which interpretations of Kirk and Spock they saw fit? He also embraced K/S fans and hired a number of them to write the earliest Star Trek novels, including the very first official one (The New Voyages Vol. 1 & 2) which included slash fiction as well as Gene's approval/forward in the books.

In case anyone has forgotten, here's a little bit of background on Gene Roddenberry and his perspectives on queerness in Star Trek.

He admitted that in his early life he was very affected by how society and culture treated the LGBT community, and that he too found himself subjugating and judging others for that lifestyle because it was what people did at that time. As he got older and had more life experience, he began working with a number of queer artists in Hollywood -- and through TOS, a number of queer individuals began asking questions about Kirk and Spock.

Instead of vehemently shutting down this perspective, Roddenberry was intrigued, and saw potential to tap into a large audience (LGBT) that most others didn't want to go near or acknowledge publicity-wise. He saw it as an opportunity to expand the fanbase while also pushing yet another envelope.

But with the heat already on the show for what they'd already pushed, he found he was often stuck between what he'd like to do and what production would let him get away with. There are a number of Kirk and Spock scenes in scripts that got cut out for leaning a little too obviously romantic. Tiny trickles of that content still made it in were infamous moments like the backrub scene in Shore Leave. Even the 2009 movie had a K/S moment while Spock Prime and Kelvin Spock talked that was written and filmed that was cut out of the final product.

Queer subtext and coding has always been relentlessly weeded away at with an excuse ready to go for why they always try to cut us out, but we all know it's because they are scared of the homophobic backlash and ratings hits. Look how violently homophobes went after the gay romance episode of The Last of Us **just this year**. This has always been our reality, so for someone like Roddenberry to make efforts in the 70s? That was massive.

But Gene as well as the queer/slash Trek community managed to accomplish some things in the 70s which I'm surprised more folks don't talk about or give much credit.

In the same TMP novel which features "T'hy'la" and the famous footnote, Gene cleverly wrote Kirk with a bisexual/pansexual lens: Kirk describes himself as *preferring* women but being open to "physical love in **any** of its many Earthly, alien, and mixed forms." (Direct quote from Genes book). Basically, Captain Kirk was DTF with whoever if there was a connection, which was a very progressive take for a character in a novel written in 1979, but made sense for the future which would have a lot less hang ups about sex and love compared to our current rather puritan/conservative society.

I also prefer women, but I married a man. Shout out to Gene Roddenberry for giving us a seat at the table back in the 70's when folks *still* try to insist there is no place for K/S or queer concepts in Trek, because he made efforts -- however small -- to employ queer people and show queer perspectives. According to David Gerrold, LGBT+ representation was a big thing that Gene personally pushed for in TNG and wanted various depictions of love/couples in the Risa scenes, to name one example.

In the 70s, fanzines led to meetings and swapped fanmade magazines, which got so big that they needed hotel centers, then convention centers, then one day the TOS cast came to one and what we know as modern fan conventions were born -- inspiring even George Lucas who attended Trek conventions in the 70s and saw how popular Trek was in syndication; it was a great climate to launch his Space Opera. Star Wars then became so huge that we got TMP.

But none of that would have happened without the level of organization, passion, and creativity that those fans poured into Star Trek and their characters after it got cancelled and went into syndication.

Without queer folks we wouldn't have George Takei, Theodore Sturgeon who gave us Tribbles, Bill Theiss and his amazing TOS costumes, Mike Minor's art direction, Merritt Butrick, David Gerrold (writer for TOS, TAS, TNG) to name a few of many queer contributors to Trek that Roddenberry respected and tried to go to bat for wherever he could in a climate that was absolutely impossible to gain an inch in.

At a time during the 70s and 80s when so many people resented and feared the queer community and wanted us to disappear, especially in the 80s during the AIDS epidemic which many homophobes claimed was "God's punishment to the gay community" or "Gods's answer" to our "hedonism", thinking we'd gotten our just desserts and should just disappear . . .

During that time, Gene Roddenberry gave us queer folks a place to say: "You know what? Sure. Write your stories. TV says you guys shouldn't exist, they pull books with queer people off the shelves and burn them. Laws exist specifically to forbid you guys from loving each other, and call you mentally ill. You can't even hold hands in public. But I'm going to validate you guys and invite you to write novels or work for me, try to see what we can get by production, and allow you to see yourselves in my characters if you want to. There's a place for you in our fandom."

He gave us bi/pan Kirk, he gave us K/S is open to interpretation. In Phase 2 Kirk's surviving nephew Peter, son of his brother Sam from Operation: Annihilate!, was going to be written as gay and living on the Enterprise with his partner -- that also got chopped and reworked into a script that wouldn't get used until decades later. That was huge at a time that being queer was officially listed as a mental illness, and villainized due to the AIDS crisis.

So before you try to dismiss or tell K/S + queer Trek fans whether or not they deserve a seat at the table, remember that Gene Roddenberry was among the **first** to pull that seat out for us in a climate that was ruthlessly against LGBT+ folks." -- 1Shirt2ShirtRedShirtDeadShirt

Star Trek science officers venn diagram!

Some notes: I know Data and Seven aren’t technically science officers, but they are in my heart, and also just functionally speaking in their respective shows. Also, you could argue that Seven is technically fully human rather than part-human, but to me a part of her remains Borg.

For the “important relationships with others cause them to question some of the most essential beliefs of their culture” segment, I’m mostly talking about Rejoined for Jadzia and Spock’s arc in the TOS movies with Kirk.

For the “doesn’t feel any emotions about that (blatantly untrue)” segment, I don’t actually think Data’s lying about not experiencing emotions, I just think he has difficulty recognizing his own emotions as being emotions. Seven and Spock are mostly just lying though, with a bit of denial mixed in.

For the “contains the memories of other people” segment, I was mostly thinking of Lal for Data, but there are several other possible reasons this would make sense for him, like how he has all the records from the people living on the planet where he was created.

I’ll go first:

What is the thing?

I’ve set myself up with an impossible question. The thing I’m most proud of is that I wrote SO DAMN MUCH this year. I think, including original stuff, I’ve passed 200k, which feels like a huge accomplishment.

Picking one thing though, I think I have to go with The Sum of All Our Accomplishments that @spongynova illustrated. (Star Trek TOS, rated E, Spock/Kirk with some friends with benefits McCoy on the side)

What inspired the thing?

This fic was part of the Shore Leave Th’y’la Reverse Bang, so the main inspiration was Spongy’s art! Once we were paired I spent a day driving around thinking about the art and what I wanted to do with it, and I caught on the idea of the way memories seem to layer and come forward when you go to the same place over and over again. During that brainstorming time I went to the beach for a few days in the town I’ve been going on vacation at since I was born, and the way memories wrap around you in a place like that is beautiful and intense and sometimes a little bittersweet. I feel like I did a pretty good job of capturing that feeling!

In a less tangible way, the boomdeahda song was also a big inspiration.

What was your process for making the thing?

Interestingly, I struggled A LOT writing this. I kept feeling like I couldn’t get it where I wanted it to be, and it felt like wrestling a bear for most of the writing process. I think I complained a lot on the McSpirk server.

This was the first year I ever tried to participate in fandom events, and I have mixed feelings about how that went. I’ve loved meeting people and collaborating with artists like Spongy! Some of my best work came from events and me forcing myself to finish things for them! But also, it took away time from things I really wanted to write especially original stuff. Next year my goal is to have a better balance.

What part of it are you most proud of?

I really love how I wrote Bones as their friend with benefits here. I love all flavors of the three of them together, but this is closest to what I see as my favorite. He loves them, they love him, but it isn’t a soulmate/romantic love in the same way Spirk is. He’s got his own stuff going on outside of them. I love how I wrote their first time together here, and I’m really proud of it!

Anything else?

This part isn’t me bragging so much as fawning over Spongy’s art again. Like WOW go look at it! Even if you don’t want to read the fic the art is just so vibrant and beautiful.

Pointing out every single mistake in the Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments show, season 1, episode 1- The Mortal Cup

It's finally happening. I'm going to watch the Shadowhunters show for the first time, and point out every single time the show strayed from the books. This is part1/???

This will be a wild ride.

-Isabelle does not wear wigs

-That's not how runes work; you don't just draw them once and activate them, you have to draw them every time.

-The demon they are after isn't a shape-shifter

-That is not how Jace and Clary met; in the books they met in a small supply closet inside the Pandemonium.

-Clary is already a student in the art academy; she doesn't need to get accepted

-The book doesn't start on Clary's 18th birthday; it is a little while before her 16th birthday.

-Maureen isn't Simon's singing buddy. He is in a band with a few of his friends- Eric, Kirk and Matt. Maureen is Eric's little cousin who has a massive crush on Simon.

-Jocelyn did not give Clary a Stele

-Clary was much younger when Jocelyn had Magnus remove her memories

-Luke is not black, nor is he a police officer. He runs a book store

-And Simon doesn't have a gig at the start of the book; he and Clary go to the Pandemonium just because

-That is not how seraph blades work; you have to whisper the name of an angel to them

-Isabelle doesn't dress like a stripper. She wears a white dress at the start of the book.

-Alec isn't the one who is a Shakespear enthusiast; that's Jace

-There is no technology at the Institute at all. Shadowhunters are very against modernity.

-There is no big deal of demons draining the blood of mundanes. Alec, Isabelle and Jace go hunting because that's just their job.

-The Pandemonium is not Magnus's club; they mixed that part with his cat's birthday party later on

-Isabelle is rarely called 'Izzy' in the books; she is more often referred to by her full first name

-Isabelle also doesn't bait like 10 demons by dancing like a stripper; she baits one demon, because there is only one demon, by just being completely beautiful.

-Isabelle's whip is golden, and also doesn't have any electrical abilities

-The battle wasn't so epic in the book. They got the demon into a supply closet and that's where Clary found them. The demon then attacks Jace while he is distracted speaking to Clary, and then Isabelle and Jace kill him together.

-Jace didn't care whether Clary was injured or not, he was more focused on finding out how she can see them

-Clary doesn't just run off after the whole ordeal; she stays and tries to get a cab with Simon

-Jocelyn doesn't just hide her runes; they're there, Clary just can't see them because of Magnus's magic. Simon mentions them once, referring to them as 'thin white scars'. Clary thinks he is imagining.

-Nothing dramatic happened when Clary came home; Jocelyn scolds her, and the next morning she and Luke inform Clary that they are going on a vacation in Luke's farm house. Simon then comes and takes her out to eat, and watch Eric read 'poetry'.

This is much harder than I thought, and it takes forever to fact-check everything in the books. I will make a part 2 if this one gets enough positive feedback!

So in episode 2 we see Daniel in front of a painting.

Armand: "It's Venetian. A contemporary of Tintoretto's." Daniel: ""Marius de Romanus." Never heard of him." Armand: "Little of his work survives. Mr. de Pointe du Lac covets the rare."

Now. it's probably important to know here that Marius is Armand's maker, and he painted him quite a few times. (Armand also was an icon painter in his mortal life, in the book, we'll see how they'll spin it here, though the art in that one shot in the trailer is very interesting.)

Supposedly Armand thought Marius dead for long periods of time. However, given that we're in a mixed timeline, and that there are indisputable elements of the last trilogy in the show (Fareed, for example.) I believe that we are looking at the show's version of "Trinity Gate". And in the Trinity Gate era Armand was more than aware that Marius was indeed not dead. In fact there had been reconciliation. For me the painting on the wall of that apartment indicates that a certain reconciliation between must have happened already. I cannot see Armand look at his maker's painting when he still harbors the negative feelings he must have felt after it all came down.

In the trailer we see this guy, played by Justin Kirk, who I think will be/is Marius. He says: "You should fear the other one."

And right afterwards there is a shot of Louis hurling his glass with blood at a painting.

However, that is not the painting by Marius (that would be behind Louis there). This is "Rembrandt's "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee" (something which Assad Zaman cheekily posted ages ago^^).

Here you probably need to know that after the "chase" of the Devil's Minion arc (so when Armand hunted Daniel across the globe and eventually fell in love with him) there was a phase, where they hunted down art thieves. And kept the art.

That is stolen art from Daniel's and Armand's time together on the wall.

Edit: @cbrownjc pointed out that the timeframe of the theft doesn’t match the likely DM timeframe. So the painting might be from after DM! (But still stolen art^^)

And Louis throws blood at it in obvious frustration.

In the story referenced through the painting Christ calms the storm after his disciples panic, and he admonishes them: "Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?"

Given that (I'll just call him that until proven otherwise) Marius just talked about who Daniel needs to fear in the previous scene? Definitely not a coincidence :)

I also do not think the "presence" of Marius behind Louis on the wall there is any coincidence. (But it cannot be seen, and that is definitely no coincidence either, imho.)

Marius has been foreshadowed, and quite heavily, imho. He is also necessary for both Armand's and Lestat's backstories.

It's... too early I think to fully analyze what it means. It could mean Daniel has fully remembered and he and Armand are in their own little bubble (after all Louis seems to be alone there). We'll see.

Last but not least:

This - there's paintings.

Has Armand started to paint again? Has he shown Louis his paintings? Does he make himself vulnerable there for Louis, and Louis... accepts the invitation? Bites him there? Turns him to kiss him?

I would actually love that.

One time, Jim gets injured on an away mission, and when Spock goes to rescue him Jim just buries his face in Spock's shirt. "You smell nice, Mister," he slurs (while spock is a vulcanly mix of panicked, confused, and endeared)

Eventually they figure it out, when Jim realizes that it is not actually normal to be able to smell your first officer's mood changes, but first there is pining.

I love this so much though?! Like, sure, for this fic/'verse I went with 'Vulcan's don't have a great sense of smell' but I adore fics that treat Vulcans like they do!

And soulmark AU's are always a win, I love how creative people get with them!

The potential for angst on Kirk's side too, growing up without a mark and thinking he's unlovable because of it... TOS Kirk trying to make up for it by loving anyone and everyone he comes across because he knows it will never amount to anything serious but a boy can dream... and AOS Kirk just being absolutely reckless and uncaring if he gets hurt, because it's not like anyone's going to miss him when he's gone anyway... I really appreciate what you said about fem Spirk not really working because I completely agree but it’s hard to say that without a lot of people getting quite angry. I just feel like there’s so much of Kirk and Spock that is tied to their masculinity and how it’s displayed/how they wield it, and it just doesn’t translate as well with them being women. Of course I’ve seen some awesome depictions, but I dunno, maybe because I’m neutral about my own gender I’m not really able to explain well

I'm new to Star Trek in general and especially its fandom space, so I might've worded it differently if I had known beforehand it was a sensitive topic, lol! But yeah, a huge part of the conflict that both unites and separates Kirk and Spock revolves around aspects of masculinity (and their subsequent relation to femininity, which often comes presented as a third party and is often portrayed as a challenge to their dynamic).

And when I say masculinity, I don't mean only traditional displays. It also includes Spock's worship of logic or Kirk's protectiveness and provider role. I feel like people often downplay how much misogyny is intertwined in the Spirk dynamic! Not only with each other but also with possible third parties that might "interfere" with the balance of their relationship (usually women, as I mentioned beforehand).

And here's where the writer's misogyny and the characters' own prejudices start mixing with each other, creating this weird, accidental homosexual (and arguably transgender) at its core dynamic.

This is fundamentally why trans women Spirk can work really well while simply genderbending them cannot. In both scenarios, their relationship with gender changes in some way or another, making them trans reaccesses the masculinity factor (while simply making them cis women changes the core of the relationship, and suddenly the story is about something else).

My friend and I just finished our rewatch of Star Trek: TOS. What a fun, fun trip it was.

Purely for my own enjoyment, here are the 10 Star Trek: TOS episodes I liked the most. Heavily steeped in my love of retro cheese and B-Movies.

10. Arena

The Kirk vs A Lizard episode. The rocks are very obviously foam, the fight choreography is peak Trek and the lizardman wears a go-go dress lovingly crocheted by meemaw. At the end a bedazzled space twink shows up. A classic for a reason.

9. The Corbomite Maneuver

Structured like so many other Trek eps (ship gets in predicament, Kirk must pull a solution out of his ass in the 11th hour) but with great twist ending that blew my mind. Showcases Kirk's brand of cleverness very well.

8. Turnabout Intruder

The last episode of the series has a fascinating plot: one of Kirk's ex-girlfriends forcibly switches bodies with him. There's a lot of unfortunate gender discourse but if you decide to view the whole thing as a typically 60s trans allegory, it becomes fascinating. Spock recognizes the captain through a mind meld and defends him in court. Good times.

7. The Cloud Minders

The best episode of season 3 imo. Beautiful painted backgrounds and amazing retrofuturist interiors. The story is a really solid metaphor for classist oppression right until you learn the workers actually ARE violent and stupid because of some gas in the mines. Still loved it.

6. Operation: Annihilate!

The crew visits a planet decimated by alien parasites that look like flying rubber pancakes. Spock gets got and it's very tense and dramatic. Good Spirk vibes, plus I love it when my blorbos suffer.

5. The Way to Eden

The Enterprise picks up space hippies trying to find a fabled paradise planet. The costumes and songs are super enjoyable. A shining example of an ep that was probably extremely cringe back when it aired but has aged like a fine, campy wine.

4. The City on the Edge of Forever

Ok this one isn't underrated, everyone knows it's good and they're correct. Kirk and Spock get stuck in the past together and it manages to be incredibly gay despite Kirk literally dating a woman. Excellent story. Spock wears a beanie.

3. The Trouble with Tribbles

Another one where I agree with the general sentiment: it's silly and fun and I will never tire of seeing Shatner buried in furry little potatoes. The Animated Series episode "More Tribbles, More Troubles" is a hilarious sequel.

2. Amok Time

The Spirk episode that started it all, featuring a fascinating look into the mix of uptight decorum and violent heritage that makes Vulcan culture so compelling. I did particularly enjoy the extremely awkward conversation between Kirk and Spock about "Vulcan biology" at the beginning. "It happens to the birds and the bees..."

1. The Devil in the Dark

Shatner's favorite ep and also mine. The acting is on point and seeing Spock yell "JIM!" with obvious concern on his face is just 👌🏻. I love the retro cheesiness of the paper mache caverns and the alien who looks like a lasagna; I love how testy Bones is about having to do first aid on said lasagna; I love the horror-like story structure and overarching message about understanding others. 100/10.

Random alien ladies all falling for her and everything- why not. xD) - Chao as Tribbles (they're cute silly things and uh... they also bud to reproduce, right? *knows nothing about chao*) - Eclipse as a secret Klingon (because I was going to make him Shadow, but-) - Shadow as Spock (it doesn't really fit, BUT they're both mixed species AND I originally had Sonic as the captain, sooo...) - Amy as Uhura (Amy is good at bringing people together, being in a leadership role, ect- so I feel like communications fits for her) - Kit as Bones (bro, there are like... no healer/medical type Sonic characters, unless I'm missing something...? So I just went with someone I like. Kit being a snarky lil turd is fun. Most everyone is a pointy-eared bastard, tho, sadly.) - Surge as the salt monster alien (pure silliness, slightly because of its connection to Kit's past so I could draw funni picture) - The Tornado as the Enterprise (eeeeeeh, sounds kinda weird as a name for a spaceship, but...)

Lastly, I quickly booted Sonic from being in Starfleet at all because... No way that free spirit would be enlisted in a uniformed organization. He's some freelance whatever doing his own thing. Maybe visits now and again to check on his lil bro and/or help out with something that aligns with his morals. Alas, lost the good ol' Kirk/Spock sonadow parallel, but oh well.
