Promises. (Levi x reader)

"Hey."

Fingers wrapped around your arm, stopping you from mounting your horse.

"Will you be okay?"

Levi was staring at you, though his efforts of hiding his concern clear, his eyes were wide with a sort of urgency.

You turned to meet his gaze. His eyes softened when you smiled.

"Yeah." You nodded, hesitant but firm. "Yeah, I hope so."

First expedition without Levi by your side. It'd be an understatement to say you weren't scared because you were fucking terrified. But you can tell from his pursed lips and the way he was looking at you, he felt guilty. He just had to get such a shitty injury.

You didn't want to worry him more. It was probably hard enough for him to let you go out like that.

When his grip tightened, you raised your own hand to wrap it around his. More to comfort yourself than him to be honest.

"I'll be fine." You tried your best to sound confident and reassuring. "I can take care of myself, Levi."

"I didn't say you couldn't." He muttered. "I'm just—"

The sound of a whistle cut him off. That's the first signal. His grip loosened as you hastened to climb up your horse.

And though his face would appear as expressionless as usual to most, but never to you. It was easy for you to notice the growing anxiety in his eyes.

"Wait." He stopped before you could say anything. "Not yet. Just..a few more minutes."

"Levi. That's the first whistle–"

"There's two more left." His hand went over the clasps in your thighs, eyes narrowing in concentration as he tightened them. He patted it, gesturing you to let him see the other leg.

You grumbled, but swung your leg over. He was pissy when he was worried, and he'd sulk all day if you didn't let him fuss and confirm with his own hands that all will be well.

"Don't take unnecessary risks." He muttered quietly as his fingers worked. "Don't go after titans on your own. Avoid being in the rear of the group. Don't waste gas. Don't—"

"I know." You whispered, gently pulling his hand away. It was trembling, but whether that was because of your tremors or his, you didn't know. "I know."

He swallowed. "I won't be there."

"I know."

"So, don't die."

You smiled, earning a scowl from him. "No, don't just laugh." He frowned. "I'm serious. Don't die."

"Levi."

"Come back. With all your fucking limbs. You have to."

"Levi."

"I'm rambling, aren't I?" He rubbed his temple. "Why can't you just listen to me and stay here?"

"Levi." You said, voice firmer this time. He looked up. Both of you flinched when the second whistle cut through the air.

Time was running out.

Without thinking, you stretched your arm towards him, hand rolled into a fist and your little finger raised.

He stared for a second, eyes flicking from you to your hand. Then realization dawned on him and he let out a huff.

"No fucking way." He grumbled, glaring at you.

"Yes way. Or I'll be sad."

"No way."

"Why not?" You pouted. "It'll make me feel better."

"What are you? Five?" He scowled.

You wiggled your finger. "It's sacred." You said, grinning. "Don't underestimate the power of pinky promises. That's a life-worthy oath."

"Fuck no."

"Levi—"

The final whistle rang out.

He stared at you as the other soldiers started shuffling, noises filling up the space in moments.

You looked at Levi, eyes wide in alarm.

"Come on." You pleaded.

Finally, Levi caved. With his cheeks flushing, he reached out, his little finger wrapping around your own. You held on to it.

"I'll come back." You promised.

Levi only nodded quietly, looking away.

"No good luck kiss?"

"Fuck off." He said, pulling his hand away. "Don't push it, you little shit."

"That's a nice goodbye."

"It's not a goodbye. You'll come back."

He said determinedly, gaze searing through you as if seeking confirmation.

You nodded your head. "Yes." You smiled. "Promise."

He exhaled, letting out the breath in relief. His face relaxed. But he stared at you as you adjusted in your seat.

"Tch." He clicked his tongue. "Your hair's a fucking mess."

"Shame. No charming titans with my beauty then." You shrugged, taking the reins.

There was the smallest hint of a smile on Levi's mouth.

"Be safe." He muttered quietly. With one last look at him, you set off, your horse's hooves kicking up dust, leaving Levi there as he watched you leave.

Levi looked down at his hands, the feel of your touch still tingling his skin.

"She'll come back." He muttered to himself quietly.

You didn't come back.

And Levi doesn't think he'll ever believe in promises again.

opened tiktok (mistake number one, i know) and immediately saw someone saying that Thomas Hutter subverts the "disbelieving husband" trope which... listen i love a thoroughly pathetic mess of a man myself and i get that Ellen's other option is a 400yo evil corpse, but can we please not give him credit for things he didn't do?..

the literal inciting incident of the story is that Thomas DOESN'T listen to Ellen. he doesn't believe her. she tells him that she's got a bad feeling about this trip, begs him not to go, tells him about her nightmare - and what does he do? he calls it a childish fantasy, tells her to stop worrying, and implies that she would benefit from talking to a doctor. saying shit softly doesn't make it any less dismissive or insulting, like i'm sorry but this is peak Disbelieving Husband in a Horror Movie behaviour. he only changed his mind once Orlok put him through the horrors himself, which is also a perfectly standard thing for a Disbelieving Husband to do in the second act. furthermore, from the beginning of the film, he neglects Ellen's emotional needs, is uncomfortable with her abnormalities, and doesn't even really know what sort of gifts she likes - and again, these are all standard flaws for a Disbelieving Husband to exhibit. they're indicative of a disconnect between him and his wife that he continuously refuses to bridge.

caring for someone doesn't mean you can't neglect or harm them, and that applies to everyone - including Normal People like Thomas, like Harding, like Sievers, like the viewer; and that's the point of the film

Ink October day 3: Sophistry

hear me out on this ok. ROTS AU where Anakin still turns to the dark side but that's Palpatine's problem.

So, Palpatine decides last minute that ehhhh maybe dooku could come in handy later and he doesn't encourage Anakin to kill him, and Dooku gets arrested and imprisoned in the Jedi Temple awaiting trial. (Also he didn't get his hands cut off because of uhh plot reasons?)

Fast forward.

Palpatine is encouraging Anakin towards the Dark side, tells him about Plagueis the Wise, etc. etc. But see, the thing is, Anakin is at the end of his tether, probably hasn't slept more than three hours over the past week, and has no remaining impulse control or inhibitions, and upon hearing that the Dark Side can save people from death, his first thought is, "wait a sec, we've got a Sith Lord in-house at the moment!" and he sprints out of the space opera and books it back to the temple.

Now, Dooku has been calmly waiting in Temple custody, confident that Darth Sidious will arrange his escape. But THEN Anakin barges into the cell like OMG THE CHANCELLOR TOLD ME THE SITH KNOW HOW TO KEEP PEOPLE FROM DYING AND I'M HAVING DREAMS ABOUT SOMEONE DYING AND I NEED YOUR HELP TO SAVE THEM

At which point, Dooku realizes Palpatine's plan. He's going to tempt Skywalker to the Dark side and REPLACE DOOKU. this is totally uncool.

So he's like "...who are you dreaming about, exactly?"

Anakin freezes. He can't admit it's Padme because their relationship is top-secret and he can't admit how important she is to him so he tries to think of a good fib and goes "uhhhh OBI-WAN! Obi-Wan, it's Obi-Wan, I'm dreaming about Obi-Wan dying-" and he just throws himself into the drama because now he IS imagining obi-wan dying because Obi-Wan is fighting grievous at the moment and he MIGHT ACTUALLY DIE and that's in addition to Padme dying and he's totally spiraling at this point- "pleasepleaseplease you gotta help me he's like the only father i've ever known I don't know what i'll do without obi-wan I have to save him YOU GOTTA TELL ME WHAT TO DO I'LL DO ANYTHING--"

Dooku begins to smile.

(Would stealing Skywalker out from under his Master's nose be petty? Oh, yeah.)

Obi-Wan clears his throat.

Postcolonial Astrology: Reading the Planets through Capital, Labor, & Power by Alice Sparkly Kat is my current non-fiction read and so far, it's very good

i'm reading a lot of comics at the moment, but my main read is Manhunter (2004) which so far, is very good, i highly recommend. i'm also planning to read Midnighter (2007) and Black Widow (2014).

i've been watching Pennyworth which is far better than i expected it to be, i'm really enjoying it

coffee or tea: tea. i used to be a big coffee person in my teens but my chronic illness doesn't like caffeine and it *really* doesn't like coffee so i just drink tea now, but i do love tea

hobby to try: the unrealistic hobby i'd like to get into a fanfiction binding, but that takes materials and resources i do *not* currently have. i think a more realistic answer is i've been meaning to get into marvel comics more.

current au: tbh the main AU i'm working on is a Lance Brunner-centric Post-Crisis fic where i'm completely rewriting his origins to make his death as Robin more significant but still something no one talks about, leading to the ressurection of Jason also reviving Lance and Jason going on his little spree, having no idea he's not the only dead Robin. i've figured out all of the backstory and how i want to characterize Lance, but the actual plot of the fic i'm still working out. i'm leaning toward Lance/Dick as a ship, but i haven't decided. i have so many notes and ideas though and i think it's funny to take a random one-off character from a random 60s comic and actually turn him into something substantial and how he'd shape the Batfamily. trust me i'm so close to infodumping about it here everyday.

i'm also working on a *really* messed up unhealthy Damian/Tim fic, where Damian purposefully breaks the timeline so Tim was never Robin and Damian was the third Robin instead. but when Bruce "dies" Damian realizes he has no idea where to start with finding Bruce so he has to go to a civilian!Tim for help, who has no idea the timeline was changed or that he was ever Robin in a different world. it's gonna be fun and fucked up and full of Damian's jealousy complex over Tim.
