so this has been brought to my attention after seeing the reaction to the new robin movie announcement. elseworlds has really fucked up dc fans understanding of how adaptations work im so serious.

im not saying this bc elseworlds stories r bad. quite the opposite i love these comics (batman n dracula trilogy u changed my brain chemistry ily bbgrl) no im entirely talking about elseworlds as a brand. i am talking about how these stories r marketed bc it has done irreparable damage im thinking.

so the thing about dc? they want u to know what a characters whole deal is. batmans real name is bruce wayne and hes a rich orphan who protects gotham city. superman is an alien whose planet blew up and he landed in kansas as a baby where he was given the name clark kent and was raised on a farm then he moved to metropolis to become a reporter. these characters have a certain way they hav to be and their stories r supposed to be. if ur adaptation of the story strays to far from this no problem we'll just label it as elseworlds. except not really they dont always do that.

case in point: the new robin movie that was literally just announced and doesnt even have a trailer yet. yeah well theyre making jason and dick around the same age. people cant be normal about this. "oh this will be so many peoples first introduction to the characters and this isnt how theyre supposed to be!" calm down. this is an all new version of the characters we havnt seen before. the point of an adaptation is not to be identical to the original. at that point just read the original. what do i mean by this? well-

another large franchise i love is godzilla. literally the only thing the godzilla movies and shows have in common is they have a giant lizard in them. you dont need to know what this guys whole deal is to call yourself a fan. do i highly recommend u watch the original 1954 movie and learn a bit about the history of the franchise if u got into it through some of the more recent godzilla media? yes but obviously i cant force u to do any of that. a lot of these movies straight up do not take place in the same universe. theyre different godzillas. one godzilla isnt "destroying" peoples perception of what godzilla is because its different from the original movie that has a completely different godzilla.

none the less before people jump to conclusions i want to make 1 thing clear: learn the rules before you break them. there have been changes made to the story before that i think r disrespectful to what the 1954 movie originally was. its easy to skim past if u dont know the characters history. for example in godzilla king of the monsters 2019 (and im not dunking on u if u like the movie bc i do also. that doesnt mean im not above criticizing it however) they have the only Japanese character get killed off by using a nuclear weapon to awaken godzilla.in this usamerican adaptation.of a movie that was made.as a metaphor for the bombings of Hiroshima.yeah that is a major yikes.

so yeah this is what i mean when i say learn the rules before you break them. it can be obvious that u either dont like what ur adapting or missing the point or just straight up havnt watched or read it none the less one adaptation doing things differently doesnt automatically mean its disrespecting the source material.

i think dc really shoots itself in the foot by making it so you have to know what every characters whole deal is and if u stray to far from that its labeled elseworlds. then when something isnt labeled as elseworlds fans get pissed at how inaccurate it is. monsterverse isnt marketed as "an alternate universe where godzilla is a million year old alien" its just godzilla. now u could say comparing this to godzilla is unfair because hes barely a character. hes a giant lizard and directors r supposed to play around with him like a barbie doll. so heres another comparison that ive already made a bunch

in mainline tmnt idw comics the turtles r reincarnated from a bunch of kids in medieval japan. this is not in any other version. in mutant mayhem the turtles go to school. this isnt in any other version. adaptations usually flip back and forth on if splinter is mutated hamato yoshi or hamato yoshi's mutated pet rat. the 4 main turtles personalities vary widely depending on adaptation bc "leader, angry, smart and funny" arent personality traits so much as they r quirks. depending on how old someone is they might have a different idea of what the lore of tmnt is if they arent super into the franchise and only know the show/movies/comics they grew up with. this is really not a big deal at all. two people having different ideas of what a character is like bc they were exposed to them from different adaptations is not as big of a deal as dc fans pretend it is. before the the tim burton movies a lot of peoples perception of batman came from the 66 show and that 1 is.very different from how the average joe would think of batman today. and that wasnt the end of the world either! again people can and should learn the history of these stories but complaining about how bad a version of the story a newcomer might like is bc its not like the one u like isnt going to make them wanna look deeper into the franchise. we should be calmly approaching these newer fans and giving recommendations and reading list if they show interest in a character or story

like literally there is a lot of criticism u could make about yjtv but it boils my blood how much bad faith criticism iv seen that can just be summarized as "this is not how this character should be". because i guess there r just definitive versions of characters now

look im not even saying if an adaptation is different u still have to like it. i actually hate a lot of adaptations bc theyre different from what i like. but the opposite is also true. there r adaptations i like bc what they do differently. something being different doesnt automatically make it good or bad is what im trying to say so now that brings us back to elseworlds.like not sorry it shouldve stayed dead.not the stories just the name elseworlds. i really dont like dc bringing back elseworlds. the whole concept just feels creatively limiting. these are just different continuities and should be treated as such. there being a certain way a story should be written and having to warn people if u stray to far away from that story and getting yelled at if u dont is what i mean! do u see the issue here am i making sense

Monthly Poll: This time it's about ANIME

While we eagerly await any word on the next edition of the annual Marvelous Game Showcase, a little bit of something did get released about a week ago: The Consolidated Financial Results for the Fiscal Year Ended March 31, 2024. As expected, Marvelous stated that the Story of Seasons series continues to do well, but more interestingly, there was this little slide:

We've already started seeing a little bit of this. Of course, games, sequels, spin-offs, all those have happened. We've also been seeing more Goods like the Nendoroid for Claire and several acrylic figures in recent years. Even the plushes of animals appearing in crane games could be slid into Amusement, with some report of those even making rare appearances in machines outside Japan. So that leaves only Stage and Anime to expand into... and Stage is probably not viable for an international release! So,

I’m not comparing it to Rise, but it did give off a kind of vibe. Especially with how Leo holds his sword and Raph’s fond older brother stare.

I’m also really glad they got rid of Splinter’s whatever they were, it was a little distracting on his movie design for me so I’m glad they simplified it.

I think this might be the establishing shot of like a news report about how much the public loves the turtles now. Which is crazy bc imagine being an unsocialized shut in teenager and suddenly you have hundreds of adoring fans.

Another thing I’m noticing is while everyone else got several shots, Donnie is only seen with a group and not by himself like his brothers are. I think this is just the pilot episode we’re seeing clips of so I’m not too judgy about it but I do wonder what the hell Donnie is doing that he can pitch in and help with the fight.

April we only see once, which is fair, again first episode. I really do hope they explore her character more than what we saw in the movie.

Marvel Studios has reshuffled the release dates for its slate of television shows.

What If…? Echo, and Agatha: Coven of Chaos, now titled Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, are among the titles receiving new dates. The move comes amid Hollywood’s strikes as well as a general pullback at Disney+.

The writers strike began May 2 while the actors went on strike July 14, significantly impacting production and development. At the same time, sources say Marvel wants to focus its efforts to make each title an event for fans and audiences. The studio has decided that spreading out its content is a more prudent strategy.

It’s a far cry from last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, when Marvel unveiled plans for Phase 5 and Phase 6 of its movies and television shows. 2023 particularly heavy with shows, with five planned. (Only the spring’s Secret Invasion, October’s Loki and as The Hollywood Reporter can reveal, What If…? season two remain of that plan for this year.)

THR poked around the Marvel scheduling changes and here’s what sources say is the new rundown:

As previously announced, Loki season two will be the only show to hit this fall, debuting on Disney+ on Oct. 6. Despite what some call superhero fatigue, expectations remain high for the Tom Hiddleston-Owen Wilson-fronted series that centers on alternate timelines. The season two trailer had the biggest digital debut of a trailer for any Disney+ series, and season one remains the most-watched Marvel series on Disney+.

The second season of Emmy-winning animated series What If…? will debut around Christmas Day, although it should be noted the animated show is not a holiday-themed series. Like the namesake comic on which its premise is based, What If…? is an anthology series that looks at key moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how they would look in different timelines. Jeffrey Wright returns as the voice of the Watcher, the alien narrator. What If…? was originally slated for an early 2023 release.  

Echo, a spin-off from last year’s hit Hawkeye, was originally announced for Nov. 29 but has now shifted to January 2024. The series stars Alaqua Cox as a one-time head of a criminal organization who returns to her hometown in Oklahoma to come to terms with her past. The series, which centers on a character who is deaf and of Native American descent, is described as having a grittier and more grounded tone than some of the other Marvel series and will feature appearances by Daredevil and villain The Kingpin. As previously announced, all the episodes will drop at the same time.

Next on the schedule will be X-Men ’97, the animated series that acts as a spiritual and tonal continuation of the classic 1990s series that aired on Fox. The series, first announced in 2021, was originally planned for a fall 2023 debut but will now premiere in early 2024 The show is being described, by sources who have seen it, as retro and a love letter to the original. A season two remains in the works.

Agatha, the WandaVision spinoff starring Kathryn Hahn, was originally announced for a winter 2023 release has been pushed back to early fall 2024, where it will serve as a lead-up to the Halloween holiday. The show, which completed its filming before the strikes, was previously titled Agatha: House of Harkness and then Agatha: Coven of Chaos before falling on its currently name, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.

Ironheart, a show focused on  genius-inventor Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) first introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was to have dropped this fall but that is now off the schedule. It finished shooting but its completion is affected by the strikes.

Daredevil: Born Again, a continuation of the Netflix series in the MCU, was expected to debut in spring 2024, paused in mid-production amid the strikes. Wonder Man, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, was also paused in mid-production.

It is unclear where on the calendar the three series will end up.

looks like no acolyte trailer this week but i wanna talk about it, so whatever let's go over all the shots from the one leaked in april 2023

1. Jedi Temple

The trailer opens with several shots of Jedi kids in a lesson, in what I assume to be the Coruscant Jedi temple:

The alien looks to me like a Tarsunt, similar to this background sequels guy. For now I'll assume these kids aren't important characters in the story and mostly serve to introduce the Jedi and/or Lee-Jung Jae's character, who is speaking over these and following shots:

He says: “Close your eyes. Your eyes can deceive you. We must not trust them. The Force is powerful. It is power we must respect.”

(I assume all these lines and shots are part of the same scene and it isn't some clever editing done for the trailer. It sounds like a reasonable introductory lesson for little kids, is coherent, and the locations match. Also what would be the point.)

There is also a single shot later in the trailer that seems to be in the same room, except with older Jedi, presumably Padawans:

The one that interests me in this shot is the one I assume to be a female Zabrak with light hair (on the right up front). She appears in other parts of the trailer as well.

2. Cantina confrontation

This sequence starts during the latter half of LJJ‘s voiceover and is partially intercut with the Temple shots. We see Amandla Stenberg‘s character walk through a public space (market place? spaceport?) and into what seems to be a cantina/restaurant, with patrons sitting at tables and eating or chatting:

There are many aliens, I think I saw an Iktotchi and/or Ovissian. If anyone knows what that thing slurping soup and the two sitting next to it are please tell me.

The voiceover ends over that last shot of Carrie-Anne Moss' character, there is a brief cut to black, and then we get a short fight between AS and CAM. It mostly looks like AS is attacking with her knife and martial arts skills while CAM deflects, before finally Force-pushing her away. We then get a first close look at Amandla Stenberg's character without her cloak:

The character's hairstyle was described by her actor as "clay-rolled dreadlocks, a North African reference".

At this point we are halfway through the trailer and the Lucasfilm logo comes up. Shots from what seems to be the same scene come up later in the trailer too:

AS is of course playing the main character and CAM is part of the main cast, so I assume this is an important scene, possibly the introduction to at least one of the two characters.

It seems a safe assumption that CAM is a Jedi master, and imo at least possible that she is the character mentioned in the show's synopsis (“A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.”) - if so, this could be the unhappy reunion before they reluctantly work together. AS seems to know exactly where she's going, while CAM appears to be waiting for her, either because she invited her/agreed to a meeting set up by AS or a third party, or because she sensed AS coming.

(Of course, it could be an entirely different situation. Several outlets have reported that LJJ is playing the former master in question, which seems reasonable, since he is the male lead of the show.)

Dear Diary,

Mom went missing today.

The last time I saw her she was going to visit Cassandra to probably have a make-out session. Angela thinks she probably stayed the night, but I feel like she definitely would've told us if she did. Dad's still at the hospital because apparently there were some complications with the birth, so I don't know if he knows.

Dirk and Aunt Jen both gave me their condolences today, but I don't really feel anything. I did dream of this happening after Dina disappeared, but I never really thought it would happen. Grandma and Grandpa also moved in with us temporarily until Dad came back from the hospital, which feels unnecessary but I'd take them over either Mom or Dad any day. Am I allowed to say that? I'm sure Mom will be fine, anyway.

Anyway, I tried to ask Angela about how her report was going but she said she wanted to keep it secret. I know deep down she hasn't done shit, because I haven't seen her make any effort to try to talk to the Specters at all. Once I asked her about it more she snapped and said she overheard me talking to Pascal and was afraid that whatever I had in that report would end up undermining hers.

I don't know why she was so upset when the Specters have a good reputation while mine is on the guy that they fucked over with the help of all the influential people in town, but I told her that we can compare reports and she seemed to calm down after that.

We dropped by the Broke trailer after school to visit Dustin but it turns out he went missing and Ms. Broke was in a frenzy. I genuinely don't think I've ever seen her that panicked tbh, or at all really. We offered to help her look around, before we eventually found Dustin inside of what seemed to be a circle of flowers that formed around one of trees near the trailer. He seemed really dazed and just stared up at the sky, so we decided to play some good old-fashioned Punch You Punch Me as we waited for him to come back to his senses.

Once he left the ring he said he was tired and wanted to go to sleep, but Angela was able to talk to him while I went to take a shit in their bathroom. The Broke walls were hella thin, so I heard everything. Dustin claimed that he got transported to another realm by a fairy and that he saw an Asian man with long hair and green tinted glasses staring at him from behind a cold, glass wall. He also mentioned seeing a hall of mirrors which reflected the people who went missing, including Beau and Mom, but that he was sent back before he could do anything about them. He seemed kinda frazzled the entire time, so we decided to just let him go to sleep and return home.

I guess I can ask Ripp if he could introduce me to Puck, one of our other classmates who's a fairy. He seems pretty chill but he's super shy, so it's hard to talk to him because of that. I'm guessing he might know something about it, or at least direct me to someone who has. I'm not entirely sure if I believe Dustin, but considering how he just magically appeared in that flower ring I'm certain fairies probably had something to do with it.

I wonder if Strangetown ever had fairy incidents, like they do with aliens. I did hear that they're mainly from Veronaville, due to it the environment being more friendly towards fairies, but I don't think it's impossible for fairies to be found elsewhere. I guess I can ask someone from Strangetown about it later.

Journal Entry #1: Welcome to Strangerville

This is the diary of Orion Fox:

I'm finishing up my degree in Physics at the Foxbury Institute soon. I've been working at the lab as a technician, but in order to push my research even further, I needed to attend post-secondary and deepen my understanding of the physical world.

While conducting experiments at work, I discovered a meteor headed straight for our planet. My readings indicate that the meteor has made contact somewhere in the desert. This is why I've come to Strangerville. I believe aliens are among us and I aim to prove it! As the name suggests, there is something strange happening here. A neighbour has reported that he is pregnant after having an encounter with one of these intergalactic-beings. I'll be paying close attention. I need to know more.

I've moved into a small abandoned trailer in town. Slip 42 was left vacant after the previous tenant left without any warning. This diary will serve as my field notes while I uncover the mysteries of this town AND should I ever go missing, it will serve as evidence that I did not go willingly.

Recap to Foundation 2x07

Since i know from the tags to my gifs that many of you don't watch the show and given the fact that they finally picked up the peace, i decided to write a recap. Massive spoilers ahead...

We start with the general and his husband on their mission to find out what the foundation is up to. They get informed by their alien crew member that the mother of aliens that one of the three guys send on a mission by fake harry has offered her to join the foundation. Which she declines because she fears what empire will do to them if they rebel. So instead she brings him to the general husbands and a fight breaks out. He escapes thanks to more advanced technology and his pet who looks suspiciously like the one who attacks day in the trailer. The husbands reports this to day and demerzel who are not amused. They then talk about why they are not fighting empire and join the foundation themselves and the general says that the poor and the weak are the ones who would suffer most if empire falls and no order would replace him.

On to the cleons:

Day and Demerzel are breaking up because the wedding is ahead. Neither of them is happy about it. On to the future empress who watches tv with her handmaiden and laughs at days expression at her speech in the previous episode. They are interrupted by demerzel who escorts her to an fertillity examination. On the way there she confronts demerzel that she knows she is a robot and asks her if she serves her in the future which demerzel declines. In the examination room she starts nagging demerzel further and she snaps telling her that she was very much involved in her families demise. Later she tells day about her family and he listens but then tells her she should be grateful for him choosing her. She is later walking with dawn and asks him to be the father of her kids instead of day and they kiss.

Later in the audience chamber with all three cleons and demerzel. The two priests are brought before them and reveal a projection of fake harry who basicly declares war on empire. Day then tells him that he reads his theories in his youth and they are the reason he wants to end the cloning. He then tells demezel to inform the general husbands that they shall go to terminus and investigate the advanced technology.

Meanwhile salvor and gail are still with the shady as hell cult. They have been told that real harry has left. While he in reality has been drowned in a pool while being chained. Salvor finds him and gets drowned too. It's. Not confirmed that they are dead.

AnimEigo's Robert Woodhead announced at the Animazement event last week that AnimEigo will launch a Kickstarter campaign for the release of the Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II original video anime film this summer. At the time, Woodhead revealed on Twitter that his release of Macross II would be a high-definition transfer and not a resolution bump. The six-episode anime premiered in 1992. The story is set eight decades after Space War I and follows a civilian news reporter who meets a mysterious singer from a previously unknown alien race. Studio Nue began the Macross franchise in 1982 with The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, a television anime series featuring the themes of a love triangle, music, and transforming fighter jets. Studio Nue worked with advertising agency Bigwest and anime studio Tatsunoko Production as production partners. The franchise spawned three other television series (Macross 7, Macross Frontier, and Macross Delta), several theatrical films (beginning with The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?), and several video series (including Macross II, Macross Plus, Macross Dynamite 7 and Macross Zero). Macross Delta aired from April to September 2016, after a trailer for the first episode in 2015. Xenonauts 2 Major Update: Explore the Harvester UFO

Sightings of UFOs and strange beings are becoming more common. As these reports increase, so does international tension and panic. People who report these sightings also vanish quite often, making it clear that the aliens are getting bolder every day. Time is running out to stop them. Transformers (UK, vol. 1) #6:Prisoner of War!

Synopsis: The Decepticons have succeeded in capturing Sparkplug Witwicky from the Autobots in order to force him into converting Earth's fuel sources into the kind that the Decepticons can use to refuel themselves. Internal strife begins between the Decepticons as Starscream openly begins to question Megatron, tipping the Decepticon commander off to the fact that Starscream may make a bid for Decepticon leadership. When they demand that Sparkplug to do the work for them, Sparkplug simply rhymes off his rank and military serial number like he did when he was a prisoner during the Korean War. This only works to annoy Megatron who demands Sparkplug work for them or be killed.

At the Witwicky garage, the energy depleted Autobots begin to pick themselves up and Buster asks them to rescue their father, his capture something that Bumblebee blames himself for personally. Optimus Prime vows that once they have returned to base and repaired themselves and refueled they will go and rescue Buster's father. Jessie and "O" come to check on Buster, and Optimus explains that they need to return to base immediately. After loading Sideswipe and Hound into his trailer, Buster hops into Optimus Prime and they all drive off back to the Ark where Ratchet is waiting to perform repairs and refuelling.

While back at the Decepticons base, Sparkplug is "convinced" into helping out the Decepticons thanks to the pressuring tactics of Laserbeak. Ordering Frenzy to provide a Cybertronian fuel sample, Megatron orders Sparkplug to get to work. Sparkplug tells Megatron that he needs specialized equipment and Earth fuel to attempt to convert, so Megatron sends out Starscream, Soundwave, and Rumble to collect the supplies that Sparkplug needs.

The rash of attacks gains the attention of both the US and Russian governments, SHIELD, and notably the Daily Bugle who sends Peter Parker to cover the story. By the time Parker arrives outside the Decepticon base, there is an entire military platoon and media reporters on the side. Unable to get exclusives conventionally, Peter slips away and allows his alien costume shape into his Spider-Man costume so he can go in for a closer look.

As the Decepticons become aware of the military's presence outside, Megatron sends Starscream, Thundercracker, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Rumble and Frenzy to deal with them. The military finds themselves woefully outmatched by the Decepticons superior firepower. Spider-Man meanwhile happens to spy the Autobot Gears on a recon mission and, thinking that he's just like the Decepticons attempts to stop the Autobot from reporting back to Optimus Prime. However, Spider-Man becomes convinced that they are on the same side when he saves a bunch of reporters from being crushed by a tank thrown by Thundercracker.

Taking Spider-Man back with him to the other Autobots, Spider-Man agrees to help the Autobots sneak past the military blockade by stealing a soldier's helmet and posing as a military officer in order to get past. The Autobots arrive on the battlefield and engage the Decepticons, however they also face opposition from the humans who cannot tell the difference between Autobot and Decepticon, and some of the Autobots are downed by Rumble and Frenzy.

Gears and Spider-Man meanwhile have scaled up the back of the mountain and are bounding up when Gears' rocket boots begin to run out of power, and Spider-Man has to resort to using a web line to help hoist Gears the rest of the way up. Inside, Sparkplug has completed his work and come up with a method of converting Earths fuel into fuel suitable for Transformers to use. As Spider-Man and Gears sneak into the base, they easily fight their way past Ravage and Soundwave before facing Megatron himself.

As Spider-Man wraps Megatron up in webbing, Gears grabs Sparkplug. However, Megatron easily breaks free of the webbing and announcing that Sparkplug's usefulness is up blasts the ground out from under Gears sending the two falling to their doom. Spider-Man jumps down after them shooting web lines to catch both Gears and Sparkplug. While Sparkplug is saved, Gears' weight causes the line to snap sending him falling to his destruction. Bringing back everyone, including Gears' remains the Autobots are confused by Sparkplug and Spider-Man's concept of death.

Much to their surprise when they return to the Ark, and after Sparkplug is reunited with his father, Spider-Man and Sparkplug witness as Ratchet repairs and reactivates Gears and Spider-Man departs. Back online Gears has some grim news indeed: Sparkplug gave the Decepticons the formula the Decepticons wanted, much to Buster's horror.
