alright! i went and slept, got some other stuff together for this post and now I can continue!

and I know that I said that I was going to talk about prototype--I am--I just realized that I needed to clear something up about the PoEs and Desmond. So, I mentioned earlier that Desmond was chosen to be able to unlock the temples and would have unparalled access to the Grand Eye right? But that wasn’t the only reason why the Isu did all that extensive testing. I’ll add this link if you guys want to see what the other PoEs can do, but in short--Desmond has all of those powers as well-- the Isu wanted to create a sentient PoE that would be able to do what other PoEs could do, had the strength to withstand the intense heat and pain that would come from death and absorbing the sun, granting immortality to humans, and being able to birth the souls of dead Isu or humans of their choice. While all the other PoE have their own abilities, the Isu knew that after the first solar flare (due to their meddling with the electromagnetic field, which causes the suns normal solar flares to hit the Earth in the first place) there would be more solar flares if humans in the future also activated their technology without understanding that it was what was causing the solar flares.

In this au, the satellite that the templars want to launch into space with a PoE is very important as this was what triggered the first solar flare for the Isu, and is essentially what ends up ‘ending the world’. I say that in quotation marks bc it doesn’t actually destroy the world, what it does is weakens the exosphere, the ionosphere, the thermosphere, and the mesophere, and attracts the rays of the sun as an alternative power source to what they’d been using in the past. With all these layers of the ozone weakened however, the suns energy that the Isu meant to use as a power source ends up cutting into the stratosphere and troposphere and much of the surface life on Earth ends up burned terribly. In order to combat this, the Isu made their homes deeper into the Earth, between the mantle and the outer core to be specific and they would take their chosen humans with them--therefore damning most of the beings living up on Earth’s crust. This was also done once they realized that bringing beings (like Alex Mercer or James Heller) so close to the inner core of the Earth would inevitably kill them as they weren’t able to regenerate at such intense heats.

Anyways, we can get on track with [prototype] now. So, I actually don’t really want to change much about the first story of [prototype], I just wanted to fix somethings that get dropped near the end of the story and then abandoned altogether in the second game. The big changes would be Dana, Ragland, and Desmond. I don’t want to change anything about the characters or their roles in the story, I actually just wanted to give them more to do and complete the character arcs they were going through. Dana is going through the understanding that Alexander J. Mercer, her older brother who was terrible at communicating but still did everything he could to provide and support her from afar, who would celebrate her victories and come running whenever she needs support or help in his awkard way of his, is dead. Alex wears his face, acts the same way he does, and in everything but memory is the exact same person. Why wouldn’t he be? Alex J. Mercer carried the strain of DX-1118n for two whole years with him every day in his overcoat pocket, while being carried Alex would speak to the virus like he was just speaking his own inner monologue out loud. Alex is Dana’s sister, no matter what form he comes in, and he’ll always be there to look out for her.

And Dana accepts that, only to be kidnapped by a leader hunter.

This is where the changes actually start taking place in the game--save for with Ragland.

Ragland is still a great scientist who is looking to cure the redlight as well as whatever is causing a widespread infection, and although he parted ways with Gentek early on, Blackwatch leaves him alone as it seems no other force in the city is stopping him from doing this. Ragland now gets more time working with other people who go out into the red zone, who gathers material that he can use to study what he needs. Ragland’s entire character arc is about seeing and realizing patients and people come in all forms (which he already does in game, we just get to see it more in the addition), and will work with people in order to help the greater populace.

Desmond and Dana were the only two people in the city that Alex Mercer calls before he goes to Penn Station. Knowing he’s being followed, Alex calls them both and just says ‘get the hell out of Manhattan and stay away from Penn Station’ before hanging up. Desmond and Dana, who already knew each other (and Alex also knows they knew each other--they would have movie nights) basically meet up and are like, ‘Did you get that weird ass call?’

Dana, knowing that Alex wouldn’t just say this sort of thing out of the blue, immediately starts packing to leave the city. Desmond, who has literally everything from his apartment in his bag, makes sure to call Elijah and tell him something’s going down and he’s going to leave a few messages before he arrives in Brooklyn. After his call, bc Desmond only has a burner phone that he factory resets after every use and otherwise only uses payphones, he goes to Penn Station and sees them carting off Alex in a body bag.

He’s horrified and tells Dana about Alex being arrested, but claims that he still might be alive. Dana tries to get out of her apartment but is then ambushed by Blackwatch, so she runs over to Desmond’s (bare) apartment and runs around in the city for three days. She and Desmond meet up quite a few times over the three days, as she has her own places to run to already being an Assassin the brotherhood and Desmond is trying to find out anything that might be useful and (at best) help Alex. He saw blood, had seen all the bodies being carted out of Manhattan as helicopters flew overhead, but they both still had hope Alex made it out alive.

Dana gets caught on the fourth day by Blackwatch when she returns back to her apartment to get some sensitive files that she left behind--along with her main hacking equipment--and Alex runs in and punches the Blackwatch soldier to death in front of her. Terrified, she tries to back away, but Alex just keeps approaching her and hugs her gently. Reassuring her over and over again that it was ok, she was safe. Eventually, Dana manages to calm down enough for them to get out of her apartment and she explains that he’d had her start doing some digging into Gentek a month ago, but otherwise wouldn’t tell her anything. One big change to the story is that Dana doesn’t say that he suddenly appeared on her doorstep, he’s been in her life but in the really awkward older brother way, but still makes sure to be involved.

Dana directs Alex to his old apartment, where he finds out about Karen and takes his two black notebooks with him. One is Alex’s scientific journal about his development of Blacklight (as well as the bodies he quite literally fed to the strain to see what would happen (and also explains that he’d only seen what Blacklight could do on dead bodies) and people he killed to become the head of the Blacklight project) and the other is his personal journal of the last five years of his life. It’s a thick and heavy tome that looks more like a spellbook and has his favorite insignia on it to denote who it belonged to, but it’s just his regular journal, with his innermost thoughts.

I just wanna say, Alex J. Mercer definitely was shopping at Hot Topic and other goth shops when he was alive, but really loved an old overcoat that he had custom-made with an insignia he drew up in high school. It’s been so many years, that he had to get it fixed with new leather and he decided to have it stitched back together with white instead of black, which is why the sleeves have that particular quirk. He loved that overcoat so much, he rarely ever took it off, and even had one made for Dana when he left home for college. He got older, still committing to his wrestling, scientific studies, and beating the shit out of people due to his anger issues, but I just wanted to make sure you guys know that in this rewrite Alex has absolutely been one of Hot Topics best customers.

Anyways, back to the story, Alex gets bombed out of the apartment. All those warm fuzzies and memories that he was getting back from being there, all the good and bad memories resurfacing as he touched everything in his home--his pictures of Dana at a party, he and Karen back when they were dating, he and Desmond taking pictures the day he’d gotten his motorcycle, pictures of Dana at her graduation for high school and college. The large, alphabetized rack of movies, most being horror or thrillers, a fair share being those sappy tragedies, and the rare couple of rom-coms next to the TV. His overly clean kitchen that damn near sparkled, even if he was terrible at cooking, due to his germaphobia. The large whiteboard in front of a large mahogany bookcase of all the notes and discussion information he’d taken, covered in notes from the nights he would stay awake trying to understand Blacklight. The row of fat plants that grew in front of the large window of his penthouse Desmond had brought over once Alex finally convinced him to move in, more pictures of himself in his overcoat.

All of it destroyed in a single instant. “That’s it, blow it, NOW”

Falling out of the apartment, Alex has only one thing on his mind--REVENGE.

So he kills the guy. Does it bring any satisfaction? A little, but he’s still more focused on the fact that all he has is a flashback to Karen and the two notebooks tucked away in the pockets of his overcoat. Another habit carried over from Alexander, as that was where he would keep the DX-1118 strain as well.

Afterwards, when he returns to Dana after causing havoc (free roam) she tells him about Karen Parker, his ex-girlfriend. Alex asks if he had someone else as well, remembering that there was another man in the pictures of his apartment and it looked like two people lived there, and she tells him that he’ll probably meet Desmond pretty soon. But at the moment, she advises him to focus on Karen as she knows about what’s going on with everything. Mind you, Alex hasn’t released Elizabeth Greene yet, the timeline is just ever so slightly shifted.

After getting Karen to safety, not needing to use a tank as the Redlight hadn’t spread yet, she tells him about Elizabeth Greene, and cites him finding out about her as the reason that they broke up. When Alex asks why, she just tells him that it’s complicated and that she’s locked up in a highly secure facility, so he wouldn’t be able to talk to him anyways. Alex, remembering how he woke up to people trying to cut him open and then getting shot down even when he put his hands up, immediately goes to free Elizabeth as he doesn’t want anyone to go through what he went through.

When it comes time, Alex then goes and frees Greene, and brings the hunters to the base with the skylight. He briefly hears the door to the base open and close (as Desmond flees the scene wondering what the fuck he just saw, holding government and BlackWatch documents in hand) before he starts fighting. Eventually, he realizes that he can’t take them on with just the claws and blows up the entire base. After that little fiasco, in which he was the last one standing, he decides its again time to cause some mayhem (free roam!). While he’s out, he see the start of hives appearing in the city, and then also spies a civilian fighting a hunter and surviving the encounter. They didn’t win the fight, but they managed a really good hit and run strategy. Curious, Alex tries to follow, but the hunter catches sight of Alex and he gets distracted.

Once was an amusement, twice is a curiosity, but three times is a trend. Alex keeps catching a glimpse of someone in a white hoodie escaping red zones with other people with him and is actually managing to kill the hunters??? Fascinated, Alex starts stalking Desmond, eventually confronting him in a blue zone. He grabs him (the way he does for all the web of intrigue targets) and carries him to a discreet rooftop. It’s at that moment that Alex sees his face that he decides not to eat him. How could he? This was the man who’s face had been in his apartment. Unfortunately for Desmond, this is terrifying because they’ve done this song and dance quite a few times but now Alex is trying to eat him??? What the shit????? So, he just busts a can of Bloodtox in Alex’s face (as one does when they believe they’re about to be eaten) and manages to escape for a while.

Alex, unsure if he’s impressed or pissed off that Desmond managed to escape goes back to Dana’s house--but this time Desmond is there too.

I’m gonna stop here for a bit, but please!! I see y’all liking this post and I appreciate it but I’m just rambling! I love it when you ask me to talk more about it! So, to start off, Alex sees Desmond and Elijah while he's grabbing something at the university of New York in Manhattan, and actually catches a glimpse of Desmond eating a glass plate and a metal cup. He's so fucking confused and fascinated that he starts stalking him out of a scientific desire to study him.

Why is Desmond eating glass and metal you may ask? He is a piece of eden and his body needs nutrients in order to sustain itself. More specifically, he's three apples. Altaïr's apple was his 'body' which is why he looks so much like him, Ezio's apple was the 'voice' that allows him to properly speak to people through time, Connor and Aveline had the 'brain' apple which allows them to directly configure and control his abilities and memory.

Yes, Aveline and Connor get married in this AU. It should've happened in canon, and just bc ubi decided to drop their storyline, it doesn't mean I have to.

So, back on track, Elijah and Desmond are traveling together bc Desmond was absolutely ecstatic to learn he was having a child, and they decided to go to Manhattan after the 'Daniel incident' in Vermont. Alex manages to track Desmond down after two months working at Bad Weather and decides to just. Watch him.

And also get into a shit ton of bar fights, bc you can't tell me that Alex wasn't using his fighting moves in game before everything happened, you can't.

Most of the other employees that work at Bad Weather don't want to deal with Alex because, as previously stated he gets into a lot a bar fights and actually manages to win them, and Desmond is a good enough fighter that he can handle him. The interesting part is that Alex never tries to involve Desmond in his fights but he does let him pull him off people without attacking, like he would attack other bartenders, so they just let Desmond handle him.

Desmond is...conflicted on Alex bc on one hand, the man is stalking him and is persistent about it too, but also doesn't run away screaming when he realizes that Alex has seen him eating food that shouldn't be consumable by humans and will break a bunch of shit so people don't realize why so many dishes go missing in a week. But on the other hand, Alex is quite open about wanting to pin him to a lab table and seeing what makes him tick, which is fucking creepy. But he also??? Fights off any Abstergo agents when they're watching him in the bar (and later on he discreetly kills them) so its a really fucking mixed bag for Desmond.

This is kinda long. I'll stop here, but like I wanted there to be a reason Alex is so interested in Desmond before and after his death and rebirth, and I kinda wanted to lean into the fact that Dr. Mercer was absolutely a freak.
