Adapting to adversity

On 11 August 2019, I was discharged from hospital after my operation to remove the cancer in my large intestine. The following Saturday, I walked and shuffled eight kilometres along the Yarra bike path in an APS Old Collegians event. I felt bad and looked worse, just skin and bone. But I was outside, breathing the air, smiling and feeling alive, and even though the effort exhausted me, I resolved to make running a part of my recovery.

My chemotherapy regime was to last 24 weeks – eight cycles of three weeks. It began on 30 August 2019 and would finish in mid February 2020. I had no idea how badly the treatment would affect me. I had heard encouraging things: “It wasn’t so bad,” said one friend who has now fully recovered from the same cancer. Not so cheery was the closely-typed nine page document from the oncologist, setting out the huge list of possible side effects.

Between my hospital discharge and the start of chemotherapy, I set a running goal for the following six months. I would run at least once a week, more often if I could. How hard could that be? It didn’t take long to find out. My Strava log tells the story: first cycle, six runs per week; second cycle, four runs per week; and it went steadily downhill from there. I soon realised that running even once a week was going to be a major challenge.

So from the start of October, in order to fortify my resolve to run weekly, I decided to do a parkrun every Saturday. But not just any old parkrun, I would make it a bit more interesting than that.

There are websites and apps which challenge users to complete various parkrunning goals. Milestones are popular – 50 or 100 parkruns and beyond. Another is “parkrun bingo”, which is a bit tricky to explain, but you can look it up. Then there is the alphabet challenge, requiring a runner to complete parkruns beginning with each letter of the alphabet, e.g. A for Altona, B for Ballarat and so on, in any order. These goals and challenges have led to an explosion of “parkrun tourism”, with people (particularly “grey nomads”) travelling all over Australia to run (or walk) in far-flung places. With more than 340 parkruns now established Australia-wide, there is plenty of choice.

I decided to do the parkrun alphabet challenge, but with a twist. I would attempt to do it in strictly alphabetical order! And so it came to pass that on 5 October, I lined up to do the Albert Melbourne parkrun. Of course I had done it before, but that didn’t matter, this was the start, I hoped, of an adventure on my road to recovery from the big C.

The Albert Melbourne parkrun is worthy of the letter “A”. It is the alpha parkrun in Victoria, being this state’s first in 2011. It regularly hosts the largest attendances, peaking at an astonishing 997 participants and an amazing 60 volunteers on 11 February 2017. Appropriately, the course runs anti-clockwise around Albert Park Lake. The area’s attributes and advantages attract accomplished athletes and amateur amblers alike (also allowing for some awesome alliteration).

And so I joined the assembled throng in agreeable weather, anticipating an arduous trek after six weeks of chemo. All things considered, being able to achieve a time of 21:44 was an acceptable outcome after a conservative start. It was a lot slower than my parkruns earlier in the year, but that was irrelevant.

The next question was whether running 5 km at 4:21 per km would hurt or help me on my journey back to good health. More on this in my next post, which will be brought to you by the letter B.
