The sense I’m getting from the burger debate is that for me and my fellow Americans the ground-meat patty (doesn’t have to be beef hence turkeyburger or impossible burger) is what constitutes burgerhood while for non Americans it is the specific hamburger bun usage that makes something a -burger
No nuance decide where your feelings lie

to me, a Canadian, anything in a burger bun is a burger, the bun is what makes it a burger, idk if its hamburger, chicken, or the entire province of quebec, you put that shit in burger buns its a fucking burger
I have a hypothesis about the "burger"-"chicken sandwich" discourse. I want to see something.

idk why there’s so much America Vs. The World burger discourse on my dash but here it is from my american perspective that nobody asked for
Burger: a GROUND meat/meat substitute PATTY between two slices of UNGRILLED bread. Could be a bun, could be sandwich bread. The important part is the ground patty.
Patty Melt: same as above except it is all GRILLED TOGETHER a la grilled cheese
Chicken SANDWICH: Same as burger except with a chicken FILET, not ground
at-home/regular sandwich: any SLICED DELI MEAT between two pieces of SLICED bread— NOT GRILLED
Deli sandwich: same as regular sandwich except on buns/roll
grilled cheese/hot sandwich: SLICED BREAD that is GRILLED with cheese (meat is optional. my family will do a “hot ham & cheese” sandwich often)

As someone who was there in the trenches of reddit when the war happened and have had PTSD flashbacks over it, I'd like to give my two cents on this post.
Burger has two meanings and all the fighting is because people are using different meanings when they think of burger.
Burger can refer to a classification of sandwich characterized by using a bun and containing a cooked patty
Burger can be short for "hamburger" or "cheeseburger" and refers specifically to a beef patty burger.
If I go to a restaurant and order a "burger", there's an understanding between me and the person taking my order that I am referring to the second definition of burger when I make that order. They don't have to ask if I want a beef burger, chicken burger, turkey burger, or whatever else they offer.
So a chicken burger is still a type of burger. It's just not the specific burger that is also called "burger".
Side note: This is a patty melt. They're good
