Acid Reflux Smoothie
1 serving
This is a very thick yet tasty smoothie that can prevent excess acid from being produced in your stomach and thereby can act to prevent heartburn. These ingredients actively fight acid reflux.
Ingredients:
1/3 cup old fashioned oats
¾ cup almond unsweetened milk
¼ cup plain Greek yogurt
¼ cup baby spinach
1 banana, frozen and cut in chunks (before freezing)
½ pear
1/8 teaspoon ginger powder
½ teaspoon truvia (sugar substitute)
Directions:
Place the oats in a food processor. Pulse until the oats are reduced to a powder.
In a blender add the milk, yogurt, spinach, banana chunks, pear, oats, ginger powder, and truvia. Blend until smooth and creamy. This might take a couple minutes or more depending on your blender.
In a glass, pour in the smoothie from the blender and enjoy!
Note:
Bananas need to be peeled and cut before freezing them as it is not possible to peel or cut them once they are frozen.
If you don’t like bananas substitute dates.
If you want the smoothie thinner add more milk.
Sweeten the smoothie to your taste.

Hiii. I was watching the live from april where Jungkookie cooks the makugsu recipe for us, and there are two ✨️special✨️ moments:)
Around the 34:50 min he suddenly says "Im nauseous."
And at the 1:28:00 min he says "Oh Im full. If I will sleep like this I'll feel nauseous the next day again."... but like.. AGAIN? He has gone through something if this was going to be the second time? Did he got sick one time???
He said in a live from 2017 or 2018 idk exactly where, but he was with Hobi, it was his live and JK came in to talk a little bit with us, and Hobi was eating his dinner. When Hobi asked him to take one bite, after Kook said that it looks delicious, he said that he gets sick if he eats late at night. Maybe he got sick one time around that time?

before I go to bed, here’s something I think is fundamentally true about Hughie and butcher’s relationship: they have Things about food. Butcher’s thing is the binge eating and the hoarding that often comes with food scarcity. He also eats junk bc he has doesn’t have much money and he is often working long hours and on the run, so it’s quick and accessible and easy. I mean, the alcohol isn’t helping, but I know his diet has his digestive system is in shambles. Also, he’s old.
I think Hughie is on the opposite end of that spectrum. He seems like someone who has stomach issues, so I think that, if he can’t access healthy food, he won’t eat much at all, otherwise he’s gassy, nauseous and bloated and irritable and tired.
I think that, together, in their domestic life, they make an interesting pair when it comes to the kitchen. Butcher, somehow, is a better cook, but Hughie is healthier, so of course they always cook together. Hughie is his little prep chef, chopping ingredients and reading the recipe, and Butcher is cooking in his underwear and an apron that says “Kiss the Cook”. Hughie spends half of their mealtime staring at Butcher as he cuts and scoops and devours his food like it owes him money. On nights when Butcher scarfs down greasy junk food and comes home smelling like burgers (after Hughie denies him any kisses of any kind until he washes his face and beard, rolling his eyes as he stands in the doorway, chiding Butcher for eating foods that give him acid reflux without taking antacid and scoffing when Butcher says he feels fine) he’ll quietly sit up in bed, rubbing his chest, grumbling when Hughie smugly looks over his shoulder, and says, “It’s the heartburn, isn’t it?” But of course he gets him some medication and some water and rubs his old man’s chest until it passes.
Hughie keeps the cabinet stocked with two separate bags of veggie chips because he knows Butcher will devour his if he gives him the chance.

Okay so @dreadazesia asked and one person is enough for me lol
Tomato Cucumber Salad
This is my favorite salad ever; my dad made it all the time when I was a kid and I've finally perfected it. It has all of 5 ingredients: tomato; cucumber; olive oil; wine vinegar; and most important, SALT.
Salt is the most important because...the tomatoes are the salad dressing. The salt sweats the tomatoes and makes the base of the best vinaigrette I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Liquid gold. I cry evertime.
You can and of course should add additional spices to this. I'm a basic bitch and just use pepper but the spice cabinet is your sandbox
Now I'll format the recipe properly.
Ingredients:
Tomato of your choice
Cucumber of your choice(enough to match the amount of tomato)
Olive oil of choice, spring for good shit if budget allows
Wine vinegar of some kind(dad uses red, I use my pepper-infused white)((you could probably use balsamic too, have fun with it))
Salt
Other seasoning
NOW. Ingredience gathered, begin.
Cut tomato and cucumber into bite-sized chunks. Peel the cucumber if you want(I usually do, especially if it's a waxy grocery store one)
Toss veggies into a bowl
Salt veggies and stir. It needs more salt than you think, but don't go too crazy. You can add more at the end.
Add drizzle of olive oil, stir. Enough to coat the veggies
Add vinegar, stir. This is up to you, but I'd start with 2 capfulls for one large tomato's worth of salad, then taste and adjust.
Add any other spices and adjust to taste. Add more salt if necessary here too
Last, and this is very important: WAIT. Let it rest at least 10 minutes at room temp. Gotta let the salt do it's thing on the tomats
Now stir and eat! Make sure to take your acid reflux meds if you're like me and shouldn't actually eat tomatoes lol
This doesn't refrigerate super well, on account of the olive oil, so I recommend making enough for one meal at a time.

Things I wish food products and recipes had, a non-exhaustive list:
Information on the acidity for those of us with acid reflux/heartburn (seriously--whenever I eat something new I have to look up the acidity of it so I know how many antacids to take)
Allergen information on recipes
On tea boxes, a list of what that tea is useful for (relieving cramps, sleep, etc)
A label that lets you know there are no allergens so you don't have to be paranoid about accidentally eating something you can't/shouldn't
More "made in a factory that contains X" labels
Allergen information automatically in restaurant menus
More "contains X" labels instead of food companies relying on you to read the long list of ingredients (I have come across packaging where that bold "contains X" is not there and they rely on you to read the list of ingredients. You get good at it after a while, yeah, but it's much easier with a list of allergens right there.)
These are just things I myself have come across, feel free to add on.

Since you asked…one of my firmest held head canons is that neither of these fools can cook. Neither wants to learn. Ronan eats *expired* beans from a can (and apparently existed in school on pizza and fast food (didn’t we all))—he could care less about feeding this human body except when he’s hungry when he’ll eat anything and everything laying around. Cooking takes some forethought and preparation so he never bothers to learn beyond maybe grilling. Adam eats because his body needs fuel, but stale hot dog bun or overpriced gourmet waffle—it’s all the same to him. And cooking takes time which he could spend doing more fun and interesting (or money-earning) things. So my HC is that at some point in their 20s when metabolisms start to slow… and acid reflux is suddenly a thing that isn’t only Declan’s… and they’re finally starting a life *together*, less travel, home of their own, Adam resigns himself to learning how to cook. He’s still very gifted at picking up new skills so a couple classes, some books, and he’s crankily cranking out meals. But they’re missing that creativity, that little extra, they’re good but Ronan thinks they’re too recipe book and bland because Adam follows directions to the letter. After some fights and Ronan dumping an entire shaker of black pepper on his potatoes in protest, Adam agrees to try going off-book and the food drastically improves and Ronan realizes he’s been a jerk and takes over some cooking duties too. Finally. And they live and eat happily ever after.🤣

Blog 3: Chinese Medicine, the 5 Elements & Me
In the previous blog, I touched on the yin and yang properties emphasized in Chinese medicine. The ancient Chinese sages also viewed the world in terms of a system of Five Elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. These elements interact with each other and are found within all life, including our bodies.
Marie Hopkinson, a Chinese medicine practitioner in Australia, used the analogy of a plant to explain how these elements interact. The sun contributes fire to the plant, urging it to grow upward. The earth grounds the plant, allowing it to absorb nutrients. Metal refers to the wind and air, giving the plant oxygen. Also, the plant needs water to grow. If any of these elements get out of balance, the plant will not thrive. (To watch her video, follow link listed below to her video, "Why eat mostly cooked foods.)
I have been diagnosed by my acupuncturist as having dampness in my spleen, known as spleen energy deficiency, or spleen qi deficiency. The spleen-pancreas system, which is more of a functional term than a reference to these biological organs, is governed by the earth element. (To learn more about dampness in Chinese medicine, follow the link listed below to her video, "What is Dampness.)
Summer corresponds to the earth element because of its dampness. I have a particularly tough time with summer's humidity because I am allergic to molds, particularly leaf molds. Since we live in the woods, and not far from a large lake, I have to stay in the house with air filters on to get away from leaf mold.
Someone like me with a spleen-pancreas imbalance will suffer with chronic tiredness, a weak digestion, and many other issues. Imagine a plant that has been over-watered, sagging with yellow leaves and not growing as it should.
To understand the spleen-pancreas system's function, imagine a fire (the spleen) heating up a pot of fluids (the stomach). The stomach needs warm, moist, cooked foods so it does not have to overwork while getting the nutrients of the foods. If the fires of the spleen system has been depleted, like mine has, cold foods make it work too hard.
To gain energy, those with spleen energy deficiency will crave sweets. To supply this energy in a healthy way, not overloading the body with glucose which we all know creates a rollercoaster of sugar highs and lows, Chinese medicine recommends eating grains, especially rice, and some fruit, with plenty of vegetables. Fried foods, refined foods, dairy products and dampening fruits and vegetables should be limited.
Many of these changes have challenged me. As I mentioned in my previous blog, Total Health gave me a convenient table that categorizes food as drying, lubricating, neutral, and strengthening. Since not every practitioner agrees with what foods fit in what categories, I have chosen to follow Ting's advice. I use Pitchford's book as a reference. He provides in-depth descriptions of the various properties of foods along with information on what conditions they treat.
Unlike my mother, I do not excel in menu planning. When I was young, my brother and I were not allowed to just grab something to eat because my mother was probably planning to use it for a specific meal. My biggest challenge has been figuring out what to eat using Chinese medicine recommendations.
I found a recipe in Total Healing called "Morning Energy Mega Boost" that satisfies my desire for sweets in the morning. It contains oatmeal, protein powder, walnuts, black sesame seeds, bee pollen, figs, apricots, and dates. My stomach and my taste buds like it.
Having soup or rice congee, a soupy rice mixture, works for supper. Chinese medicine also recommends eating light in the evening, which I was already doing because the result is that I have less acid reflux at night.
This leaves the biggest dilemma--what to eat for our main meal. Chinese medicine recommends eating your main meal in the middle of the day. We have been doing that for quite some time because of my husband's work schedule. Pitchford recommends eating only a small amount of meat, but my husband and I have been eating meat all of our lives. I have yet to find many recipes that work for me, other than stir fries, because we have always centered our main meal around meat!

Simple green smoothie. As someone who hates vegetables but still needs to eat them, my acupuncturist recommended I try making green smoothies and I’ve gotta say, it’s been a game changer!
It’s also super great because I don’t have to think about what I’m going to have for dinner every night. I have a bad relationship with food, thanks to my digestive issues, my strong dislike of many tastes and textures, and being neurodivergent. I hate having to make food choices and spending time cooking and cleaning when I’d rather do other things, like write fanfiction late into the night.

Below is my basic smoothie recipe. The ingredients that are spelled out to the letter never change for me. The others change only when I’ve used up a bag of something. It will also depend on what’s available at the store. For the bananas, cut them in half, peel them, and store them in a freezer bag or container in your freezer, as soon as you buy them. This is a versatile recipe so change it to suit your needs and tastes!
This recipe does not require ice because most of the ingredients are already frozen and the mini cucumber helps provide liquid along with the almond milk and fresh fruit.
The fruit masks the taste of the vegetables! It’s magic!

Here’s my basic recipe:
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup almond milk
1 mini cucumber
Handful of other fruit (fresh, not frozen) for flavoring (currently using pre-cut pineapple pieces, but berries work really well too.)
(Let your mixer mix these ingredients until liquid.)
Add a handful or two of two different frozen vegetables (currently okra and broccoli, but zucchini, peas, and Brussels sprouts work well too. The key is that the vegetables should be green.)
(Let your mixer mix these until liquid.)
Add a handful or two of frozen spinach or kale (or some other leafy green vegetable.)
As a bonus, I’ve been adding a pinch of turmeric and a pinch of ginger at the direction of my acupuncturist.
(Let your mixer mix until everything is liquid and smooth.)

Too make this a full meal I will eat two fried eggs or a few fish sticks on the side.
I also like to pair this with crackers. Sometimes my kitchen wizardry doesn’t come out as tasty as I’d like, depending on the ingredients mixed together. Most of the time it tastes pretty good, but I’m a severely “picky eater” that causes problems at times. If it happens, crackers help give a neutral taste in between swallows. And yes, there are times I’ve abandoned a smoothie that just wasn’t working for me. It’s okay. Sometimes kale is too strong a flavor and it overpowers the fruit, or maybe the fruit’s just not quite in season yet. It happens.
Remember to drink your smoothie slowly and use a chewing motion. Supposedly, chewing helps you digest your food better, even if it doesn’t actually require chewing. From personal experience, drinking anything, even water, too fast can lead to acid reflux, which ain’t no fun at all.
This really works for me! As a kid I lived almost exclusively on dairy and wheat because that’s what tastes good to me. Even as an adult, I used to eat macaroni and cheese everyday for lunch. I still hate vegetables, but the fruit and other ingredients helps to hide the taste in a smoothie so I can be a little bit more healthy in what I eat these days.

This week I’m remembering the why. I truly believe your willpower will only be as strong as your why. So, I’m taking you back to my why, which takes us back almost six years to the birth of my second son. It was a beautiful day, when He was born with His big brown eyes and brown hair making me the proud mom of two healthy boys. Except I still remember the nurse coming in every hour and pricking my youngest son’s feet. It was horrible. I was tired, He was tired, my husband was tired, and all I wanted to do was sleep, but the nurse had to check His blood sugar.
Why? Well because I had gestational diabetes all during the pregnancy leading up to the birth of my second son. My Dad had triple bypass surgery about three years ago, His mom had type 2 diabetes and later developed Alzheimer’s, and my aunt has type two diabetes as well. The gene pool clearly wasn’t flowing in my favor and the sickness seemed to trickle right down to me. The symptoms were low mood and a lack of energy, but I was mom. So, I chalked it up to job description. I mean, all moms are exhausted right? Apparently, these were warning signs of what was to come, I just didn’t know that at the time.
I ate sugar free chocolate pudding every day after dinner to curb my sweet tooth in a healthy way and took walks when my sugar was especially elevated. After I had my son, and after the heartache of hearing Him cry when the nurse checked His blood sugar, I moved on with life, sweets, and all. But a couple years ago I was diagnosed with chronic gastritis and acid reflux. So, this is when I became a vegan. I let go of the meats and cheeses, filled up the fridge with vegetables, and watched many documentaries about how diet is connected to overall health. My favorite documentary is still “What the Health” by Kip Anderson. In this documentary, Kip uncovers the secret to reversing chronic diseases.
After years of living a vegan lifestyle and seeing the health benefits including clear skin, good digestion, and overall increase in energy, I began to get lax in my efforts and became a vegetarian, and now I eat meat again. The point is that those habits are only as effective as my ability to maintain these healthy eating choices consistently and over a long period of time. Now I am focusing on eating healthy foods overall. I’m pulling back out those old but loved vegan recipes including crispy tofu with quinoa and steak seasoned zucchini. I even put some of the candy from my Christmas bag into the communal candy pile for someone else to devour. This may sound small to you, but it’s a big deal for me.
I said no to Super Bowl brownies and key lime cake last night, as well as all the diet sodas that I used to love. My favorite soda used to be cherry coke zero. The point is that Americans, myself included, consume too much sugar. I know I did, and I now must come up with a game plan to leave the sugar where it needs to stay, on the shelf for special occasions. According to the American Heart Association Americans on average consume 20 teaspoons of sugar per day while the recommended daily amount of sugar is 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men. Beverages make up most of our sugar consumption at a whopping 47% which include soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, coffee, and tea. The second leading cause of excess sugar comes from snacks and sweets at 31%.
The point is, sugar consumption has gotten way out of control, especially in the United States, and we need to be aware of the risks associated with excess sugar which include chronic inflammation, tooth decay, acne, advanced skin aging, weight gain and obesity, diabetes and insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, brain loss, cancer, and premature death. Sugar though sweet can be deadly. It’s recommended by John Hopkins Medicine that we avoid sodas and other sugar sweetened beverages, reach for fruits instead of candy, cookies, or other sweet treats, read ingredient labels, and watch for sugar aliases. As it turns out, smoothies with no added sugar still taste sweet because that’s how they are made naturally. If we stop and think before we run to the sweets isle, in the future we will be happy with the choices we make.

my toxic trait is eating tomatoes all the time even though i have acid reflux and will probably feel it later i just know so many recipes where the role of the humble tomato really can't compare

Magnesium can help with restless leg syndrome symptoms too. My dad uses a cream version on his calves.
I will also say, make sure you're getting at least 20% of your daily calories as (ideally healthy) fats, because those influence your estrogen levels, and especially make sure to have a decent caloric intake (I did not, for the better part of this past year, due to reflux/PPI related issues making me drastically restrict my diet, and my period straight up stopped. until my calories increased again)
Also, something that reduces your pain tolerance is buildup of arachidonic acid which happens from consuming too much omega 6 fats in proportion with omega 3 fats. Ideally the max is a 4:1 ratio of omega 6 to 3, but the more omega 3 the better. Because flaxseed has more omega 3's than 6s (fairly uncommon IMO), if you sprinkle it on stuff, it'll improve the ratio for that food. So you can eat something like 2 avocados if you have the right amount of flaxseed with it, and your skin won't break into any inflammatory state (like mine did when I ate peanuts everyday (they have no omega 3's and like a crapton of omega 6, so it's just a recipe for BAD bodily inflammation) or increased my avocados to 2 daily without adding any flaxseed. Here is a link to a chart, and in the top comment is a link on how much flaxseed to add to some of the nuts on the chart to balance out.

Pre-menstrual depression is always depicted as like "He He! I had a box of icecream bars and cried while watching the Titanic!" But in reality, it's more like, "I'm standing the edge of an abyss. There is nothing good inside of me, I'm filled with rage and desperation."
It's crazy that being told how to deal with that is never a part of anyone's menstrual sex education.
#i dont tend to notice symptoms the week before my period. i do have to take 2 tylenol and 2 advil as soon as i notice my period has started#and if i dont in time then i get debilitating pain despite the meds.#i tend to only get pain for the first 24-36 hours#and then very light flow on days 4-7

Chicken Lentil Soup
Ingredients:
2 lbs. Chicken breast, diced
1 yellow onion chopped
2 carrots, peeled + chopped
2 tbsp. tomato paste
2 tsp minced garlic
1 tsp cumin powder
1/2 tsp curry powder
1/4 tsp mustard powder
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1 28 oz. can diced tomatoes
1 cup green lentils, rinsed
4 cups vegetable broth
1 can coconut milk
2 bay leaves
salt + pepper to taste
2 cups chopped kale
1 tsp lemon juice per bowl (garnish)
Directions:
Warm olive oil in the bottom of a stock pot over med. heat. Sear chicken. Add onion, carrot, tomato paste. Cook until onion is translucent (5 min).
Add garlic, cumin, curry powder, mustard powder, thyme. Cook about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add canned tomatoes and cook a few more minutes, stirring often.
Add lentils, broth, coconut milk, bay leaves. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Cover partially with lid and reduce for 25-30 min. Season with salt + pepper once reduced. Remove bay leaves.
Add kale and cook another 5 min until greens have softened. Serve with 1 tsp lemon juice for each bowl.

I have a tendency to add diced chicken breast to vegetable soup recipes as a way to add more protein. Once I was done searing the chicken, I read the directions to this one and went, "oh god, this is gonna be an acid reflux nightmare". So, I halved the spices, added the tomato paste, mustard powder, and bay leaves, and grabbed a can of coconut milk from the pantry.
Unfortunately, this was after I added twice as much olive oil as I call for here, so my initial run did end up really oily. I suppose if you blend it up like the recipe calls for, it might work, but I didn't. Midway through reducing, my husband gave it a taste and said it was good, but blending it would make it lose the different flavor profiles of the ingredients. He ended up being right, and the soup turned out really well.
