bad news instead of getting out of class and watching the game i got side tracked with a lecturer good news she introduced me to the person who runs a bunch of sports media courses AND THEY WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF WATCHING THE LEAFS GAME and we chatted for . um. 2 hours about all sorts of hockey and sports stuff and it was very life affirming to meee <3

What‘s up with yotici? Are they still around

Yeah they're still canon. Last I mentioned them was briefly in the Imperial Wardi food post because their larval young are often caught as bycatch and eaten. They might come up again when I expand more on the Jazaiti people because the shallow sea on the west side of the peninsula is where this particular region's largest yotici pod is based out of.

By and large, the majority of landdwelling peoples do not communicate with yotici or even recognize them as sapient, and they tend to be categorized as fairly intelligent and very hostile sea beasts. The peoples who have established mutual lines of communication tend to be smaller, localized populations who depend on shallow seas for their subsistence, and don't tend to have mass influence (in a game of cultural telephone, "We have established treaties with the people of the sea grasslands to graze our wammi in peace in return for protection of their gardens and gifts of trade" becomes like "THE YANTI OF THE LOWLANDS SAY THAT THE GREAT BEAKED SEA-BEASTS SPIRITUALLY COMMUNE WITH THEM, AND THAT THEY MUST FEED THE BEASTS OFFERINGS OR ELSE THEY WILL DEVOUR THEIR SEA-CATTLE. Yotici are not often involved in the affairs of land people beyond sometimes being hunted with harpoons, or drowning sailors/fishermen for hunting them with harpoons/threatening their gardens/just pissing them off. They're sometimes hunted by subsistence fishing communities (and their larvae are frequently caught in nets) so most established relations tend to be hostile (with no lines of communication or full comprehension that both parties involved are People).

Most yotici cultures have such fundamentally different modes of living and communication from landdwelling peoples that many yotici don't fully recognize them as People either (also thinking of them as mere beasts, if very intelligent ones- they can even use tools!), which reduces the frequency of even attempting to establish communications. Most yotici are just kind of out there doing their own thing.

What a loving, beautiful homage to being an engineer. having a passion and excelling and bringing others with you for the purity of the practice. And what a human, complicated, messy world it paints where sometimes pursuing that dream is a fantasy to cope while your inventions kill people or enable killing people. do you die without applying yourself, say goodbye to your big dreams and shutter them? Do you let someone else be the one to take your place in that role? Does pursuing your dream in this way ultimately poison a dream, something that once gave you joy and drive turning into a dreadful nightmare? Was there another way? Does it matter?

I was going to have rye maaaybe start to buy into solas' whole johnny silverhand deal a little bit more in the post-weisshaupt talk -- to Progress the Arc tm/set up the beginning softening in that relationship and heighten the effect when it eventually goes. quite another way entirely -- but the sheer spectacular cruelty in hindsight of 'at least you still have varric to talk to' is such that considering where I'm intending to end up with this narratively, the stoic 'not here to make friends you fucker gimme your intel' option is simply irresistible. gotta have that echo rattling around rye's head forever when he decides that you know what? I have had enough of being nice, actually. I do want to go ape shit. someone hold my coat for me please I have some work to do and I don't want to stain it. guess for now the ol' watcher training & instincts are still kicking in enough for them to treat solas like a tricky spirit you should treat with respect and good intentions, but also shouldn't be out there offering little fingers to unless you have a whole arm lying around to spare haha
