I watched the film again today because of a discussion in @bootleg317 ‘s channel server, so without further ado here’s my
ABCs of Death rankings
No particular order in each category I wrote each blurb as I watched :) spoilers ahead
Loved
G (drowning is such a horrific way to go, you may disagree but this is a horror short to me. We know how it’s going to end from the beginning and we can only watch, we don’t know why he’s doing this and we can’t help. All we know is a surfer has chosen to end his life the way he loved to spend it, his surfboard sticking out of the water as his headstone. Beautiful)
H (nazis get the bullet even ones that make my pp hard RAHHHHHH LETS GO INGERLAND)
I (the cultural context of this one is incredibly important and it is undeniably horror, a very real horror. It is unfortunate that it requires some background research to truly understand but I say that the not because I know many people won’t do it. Raw in its purest form. The violence against women it’s meant to touch on is given a blind eye, you can’t look away now and that is the point. I actually thoroughly enjoy its place sandwiched between two ridiculous shorts.)
P (I understand why people would skip this one, truly I do so no hard feelings to anyone who doesn’t like it. It’s part of a genre of shorts in this film which I would describe as “the real horror is being a woman” which honestly has so much to pull from. A mother’s love knows no bounds.)
S (s is for SO FUCKING GOOD, the contrast between the campy outlaw action film and the true reality at the end? beautifully executed)
T (an amazing short by an amazing animator, he utilizes his medium so well. I can’t say much without totally spoiling it but another good juxtaposition between fear and reality. The gore and body horror was amazing, we need a little green in our red)
X (it was so wonderful to see so many aspects of the lived experiences of fat women explored, people can pretend that it doesn’t happen but it’s all very real and it damages you down to your very soul. To be treated like a zoo animal that no one wants to look at but everyone wants to sneer and gawk at. So full but so empty. I understand her completely.)
Z (ok listen I know lol but this reminds me of how people describe Tokyo gore police which I’ve yet to watch, the political metaphor done with over the top surrealist horny is amazing. By far my favorite of the Japanese shorts.)
Alright
A (better than I remembered, really really interesting concept, lackluster execution)
D (I actually really liked the execution of this one and its twist was very heart wrenching, horrific for this man? Yes horror? No)
Y (the 80s feel was super intriguing, it’s metaphor is clear and executed really interestingly. I get the sense maybe the director was discussing their own experience through art but not in an inaccessible way. Honestly nothing bsd to say! I think the only thing keeping from the top category was the goofy kill. This isn’t a bad category just not my absolute favorite :))
Meh
B (boring, scaring a kid is a dick move but I don’t think they deserved to die for that)
F (refused to watch this one all the way through again, but I respect that it’s unapologetically Japanese lol)
L (I honestly struggled to come up with something to say for this one or where to even place it? I guess I’m a little desensitized. It’s an enjoyable watch for what it is and as usual I love the Japanese freak and the little surreal details that were lingered on. Plus 1000 aura)
N (a fun little short!)
V (I think this director should have saved this and maybe made a full movie, really interesting concepts all around and a clearly high ass budget)
Not a Fan
C (snooze, this is one of the ones where I do agree killing someone doesn’t make it a horror short)
E (snooze part 2, couldn’t even watch this one all the way through)
J (a good time but not what I came here for, wasn’t enough for me to give it a second watch through this time)
M (again, horrific for the person in the situation? Yes crossing in to horror? No. Loved the main actresses aesthetic)
O (idk man even I can’t read in to this one enough to come up with why it possibly ended up in this film, the visuals are fun? that’s it. I had to skip it)
R (man I wish I could like this one more, the body goop and concept isnt fun enough to make this in to meh and it’s just missing something. Some context??? Please)
U (imagine if they made a vampire movie really short and boring and didn’t utilize the concept at all)
Just Put The Fries In The Bag Bro
K (stop it.)
Q (tedious, pick up a dictionary)
W (whyyyy did we get TWO shorts around the concept of the director being uncreative and objectifying women)

Just saw an anti Eddie fic about Eddie being rude to buck for infodumping and before that I’ve seen few bucktommy posts about Tommy being the only one to want to listen to buck’s facts
And like you mean this Eddie?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Be so fr he’s so “show me your rock collection babe” “tell me about beetle folklore” “and why exactly are dolphins assholes?” “Wait so why did pirates like black cats?” “Sure I’ll watch 3hr documentary with you” coded
Same man spouting goat yoga facts just cos buck wasn’t there, be so fucking for real guys
(Insert the “ I love this autistic man” audio here) - tho in my opinion adhd is more accurate for buck

Buck just randomly drops pieces of lore and doesn't elaborate.
"this reminds me of the time the lightning strike gave me superpowers."
"it was hard getting back in the ocean after the tsunami."
"I still feel bad about throwing up blood on Athena's flowers."
And every time Tommy gets whiplash.

ABCs of Death 2 is… safe…? Kinda…?
Some minor spoilers ahead.
No actual v*, but there are a few moments that many could find triggering.
In the short “B is for Badger”, a person’s blood and guts fall onto another person’a face. They proceed to g* strongly once or twice before walking away. No v*
In the short “O is for Ochlocracy”, a woman has what is assumed to be feces throw at her face. She smells it, realizes what it is, then g* and r*. No v*
The worst instance is the short “Z is for Zygote”. In the last third of the short or so, a woman lies on the floor in pain, and she starts expelling her organs from her mouth. The audio and visual can be incredibly triggering, but technically no v*.

An underrated thing about the bachelor party scene where Tommy hugs Buck before going to work is Buck's small little "yeah, okay" when Tommy promises him that he'll try his damnedest to make it to the wedding. It is such a small moment but maybe because of his history of love interests putting work over him as well as his own abandonment issues, there is a part of Buck that doesn't look like he believes Tommy, that takes it as what someone says when they leave and don't come back or intend to come back, even when Buck waits and waits (I'm going to be right here when you come back, okay?). So the fact that Tommy literally ran from the fire to the hospital, still in his turnouts and covered in soot, all because he promised Buck he would try his best to show up and he meant it? I love that for Buck. I love the look on his face as he reads Tommy's text, because this might be new but it is good for him to finally feel like a priority in a romantic relationship in ways he's not experienced before.

Say what you want about tired old tropes but you give me someone saying "it's beautiful," while looking at the sunset or something and then the other person says "yes it is," while looking at person 1 and I go feral.

Tommy can remember the day he knew he was going to kill Vincent Gerrard. Or, not kill exactly, but do some serious, irreparable damage to him. He'd kind of figured this day would come, if the way he felt like ripping the old man's mustache right off his face whenever Buck came home upset was anything to go by. He just didn't think it would happen quite so soon. He's held Buck plenty of times after rough shifts, where Gerrard would make him man behind for no other reason than "I want this place clean and perfectly organized. That's what you people do, isn't it?". He's heard enough stories from Eddie, and Hen, and Chim, about the abuse they were all getting but how most of Gerrard's hellfire seemed directed towards Buck.
But nothing could prepare him for the fury he felt when that day arrived.
He'd gotten a text from Eddie, a short and simple "he needs you", and he'd been in his car in a flash. The whole drive he'd been worrying, not sure what he'd be arriving to.
When he gets there, he knows it’s bad. Hen and Chimney are locked in a furious screaming match with Gerrard, their faces all varying shades of puce, and it looks like Hen's about to punch Gerrard in the nose, based off the hand Chimney has wrapped tightly around her wrist.
He spots Eddie and Buck immediately; they're in the locker room and Eddie has his arm around Buck's shoulders. When he looks up and locks eyes with Tommy, he can see the flames of rage licking behind Eddie's eyes. Buck's got his face in his hands, and his shoulders are shaking in a way that tells Tommy that he's crying. Tommy's across the station in 3 quick strides, dropping to his knees in front of Buck and taking his face in his hands, stroking his thumbs over his cheekbones.
"What the hell happened?" he asks Eddie, because Buck's not in any shape to breathe right now, let alone talk.
Eddie doesn't reply immediately, but his jaw ticks and he looks like he's carefully picking his words. Just as he's about to speak, Buck's voice, quiet and broken, cuts through the silence.
"He made me watch."
Tommy's brow furrows in confusion, and a ball of dread settles in the pit of his stomach. Buck swallows convulsively and even Eddie looks like he might throw up. It's bad.
"Watch what?" Tommy asks carefully. He doesn't want to push it, not if Buck isn't up to speaking, but he needs to know.
Eddie speaks up first, and his voice is shaky too.
"We were called to a massive haemorrhage at the Pride Event in West Hollywood. A man and his husband had been attacked by one of those bible bashers that stand there and tell everyone they're going to hell. A bystander said they'd been arguing with him and he pulled a knife. Got the first guy in the stomach, second just above his heart. There was nothing we could do."
Buck takes a deep breath, a whine issuing from the back of his throat. Tommy puts a hand around the back of his neck and rubs soothing circles just below his hairline.
"He made me watch," Buck repeats again, a little louder this time, and Tommy's heart clenches cause he knows, he fucking knows what Buck is going to say next. "He said "ride with Wilson, Buckley. This is a good opportunity for you to increase your medic skills." He knew they weren't going to survive but he made me...." Buck trails off, unable to finish his sentence, and Tommy's vision goes red. He's never hated anyone more than he hates Gerrard right now.
That is, until Buck finishes his sentence.
"He said "you might learn something valuable," but he wasn't talking about the job."
Buck's fists are clenched so tight his knuckles are white, and there's blood under his fingernails. Eddie's got a fistful of Buck's shirt clenched tightly in his fist and he looks like he's doing all he can to not run upstairs and tear Gerrard limb from limb.
There's a ringing in Tommy's ears and everything sounds kind of muffled, like his head is underwater. He's clutching the back of Buck's neck so hard that it's got to be painful, but he can't make himself let go.
When he left the military, Tommy made a vow that he would never take another man's life. But for this - for Gerrard - for what he did to Buck, the light of Tommy's life, he might just make an exception.

before we'd go deeper into this new found freedom that the hiatus grants us... let me just say that a flirtatious joke about daddy kink is the most vanilla of kinks that they could've ever come up with. if this ruffles your feathers, maybe that's about something else, huh.
