in many ways, i think stopmotion (2024) is in direct conversation with other horror movies about doomed artists, notably black swan (2010), in that while they ask the question about what if you threw away everything, your relationships, your sanity, your life for this one crowning beautiful piece of art, stopmotion asks what if you did all that and it just wasn’t very good? you sacrificed all your time and work into this one effort and it’s simply not enough, you’re not enough to carry out the vision inside your mind. or maybe your vision is trite, worthless, and devoid of the true spark of creative genius. in my opinion, this is more frightening, and i think it comes directly from its own medium where stop motion is notoriously so time-consuming and gradual that it’s only at the very end where you can really step back, take in your creation as a whole, and judge whether it was worth your effort to make it. and even if you say no, i shouldn’t have made this, well it’s still there and you have to live with it and the knowledge that you spent your precious time and energy making a bad piece of art.

As of today it's been exactly 10 years since The Boxtrolls first appeared in theaters. What a wild, wonky, incredible journey it was making that film at Laika! I'm so very thankful for the amazing people I worked alongside with to bring such a bizarre stop-motion vision to life. "It's more Monty Python than Walt Disney" was one reviewer's take on the finished film and if that's how it's remembered I'm definitely A-okay with that!

Meet Prue McKeel (and the General) from Wildwood! I had the pleasure of designing these characters back in early 2020. The team at Laika has poured their hearts into this movie, and as you can see, it’s shaping up to be absolutely stunning! I’ve been responsible for establishing the overall look of the characters and overseeing the entire design process, from the initial sketches to their final appearance on screen. Anyways, personally i didn't like how the animation looked so messy in the end but was worth for the practice ig:p
