Jiang Fengmian and Wei Changze decidedly to bring Wei Ying with them to the conference because they fear what the child would do if left alone back in Lotus Pier - they could be back to see the sect flourishing under the guide of a 8 years old or to disciples running around in panic because their second young master burned another building or just disappeared (or worst, both).

This time the conference was in Qinghe Nie's Unclean Realm and the tension was a little higher than normal due to Wen Ruohan. Fortunately, Wei Ying seemed oblivious to it, looking around with sparkling curious eyes.

Recently, the leader of the Wen sect started to amass power, more than normal, and acting, unsurprisingly, arrogant and making everyone else uncomfortable in a way. No one wanted to offend him or to get too much of his attention, the only one going against common sense was the currently Nie sect leader, and Wei Changze worried.

Maybe it wasn't the best choice to bring Wei Ying.

Sighing, Wei Changze followed his leader and brother around with a polite smile and a hand against his son's small back to guide him to walk with them (and to know when he decides to run away from what he calls "boring adult stuff"). They made small talk with other sects, greeting whoever they knew when passing by, introducing Wei Ying to other kids around in hopes he would behave like his age for today.

"Jiang zongzhu." came the greeting when they were returning to their seats as the conference was about to begin.

"Wen zongzhu." Jiang Fengmian bowed, followed by Wei Changze and Wei Ying.

"Ah, is this the famed brother?" the sect leader looked at the man with grey eyes with an empty smile.

"Wei Changze is honored to be noticed by sect leader Wen." he bowed formally.

"Wei? I thought you would adopt your father's name at first opportunity." the smile turned a bit ironic before looking down to the child behind his father's leg, pausing for a moment "And who is this?"

"I'm Wei Ying." the child said, bowing as formally as his father did.

"Ah, the little genius the Jiang clan caught." Wen Ruohan nodded a greeting back "You have your father's eyes. But your face..." with intensity, the sect leader crouched down to the child's level and analyzed his small face "Do you know your mother's family, perhaps?"

Wei Ying shook his head "Only a-die's...."

"I see..." Wen Ruohan lifted his hand and held Wei Ying's face, turning from side to side with delicacy "It's curious how much you look like that woman."

"What woman, if I may ask?" Wei Changze was starting to sweat in nervousness.

Wen Ruohan turned back with a smile "The woman I wanted to marry before my wife."

"Before your wife?" Wei Ying asked.

"Yes. I was a young man in love, you see. But then my father arranged my marriage and that woman ran away and I never saw her again. Perhaps she was with my first born in her belly?"

"Hm.... My mother? The first born?"

Wen Ruohan's eyes widened, together with Wei Changze's.

"A little genius, indeed." Wen Ruohan laughed.

A rather familiar laugh that made Wei Changze shiver.

"Father, it's time." a new voice approached them.

"A-Xu, come." Wen Ruohan said, without looking back "Meet your jiejie's son."

"Jiejie?" Wen Xu looked curious.

"Yes."

Both Wen Ruohan and Wei Ying turned to look at the young man with identical smile that shocked everyone that was looking (and eavesdropping) at the scene.

"I see." Wen Xu said after a moment "Nice to meet you. Apparently, I'm your... uncle."

"Perhaps we could arrange a visit after this conference end, what do you think?" Wen Ruohan booped Wei Ying's small nose with a smile.

"Eh~" Wei Ying lifted an eyebrow then shrugged "Ok."

Wei Changze would definitely drink until he passed out that night just to run away from his worries for a few hours at least.

He definitely should have left Wei Ying behind.

What if Wei Ying turned out different? What if he had gone through much worse as a homeless child?

Heaven knows what his life was like before Jiang Fengmian found him, but it surely wasn't friendly. What if that changed him so much? The trauma ingraining itself into his brain that it becomes his main source of survival?

Yiling was a badly managed town, even the children saw that. And among the cultivation sects, none were really keen on investing their time and materials on withered soil, especially the nearest jurisdictions of Qishan Wen and Yunmeng Jiang.

That's why in Yiling, everything tagged crime can be stashed away, hidden into, escaped out of. Sects turn a blind eye to it, hell, even the previous Baron of the land didn't bother reclaiming Yiling because of its high crime rate.

It built itself up by blood money and fear, and with the Burial Mounds so close in vicinity it was much worse.

Anything and everything illegal was practically spoiled culture there.

Especially,

Especially slave traders, especially human trafficking. There was no authority to call upon, no one strong enough of a will to stop it. And so whenever Yiling hears the heart-dropping sound of golden bells chiming, the heavy hooves of a bull that carries with it a large wooden cage. They do nothing.

They can do nothing.

And there goes A-Ying, freshly orphaned, still getting a hang of wandering around the streets he would have to call his new home.

The first time it happened, his face got too close to the torch while he panicked. The large men and their ropes scared him too much and he wanted them to let go let go let go-

They didn't like how he moved around too much and tightened the noose around his neck, A-Ying suddenly couldn't breathe. He felt the bones of his weak throat cave on itself and it hurts. It hurts. It hurts. It hurt so bad. It made him thrash around the cage widely, using his remaining air to scream so violently that would have guaranteed his broken throat.

In his panic attack he hit his head on the splintered pole used as a torch on the corner of the cage they threw him in.

A-Ying didn't think he had the strength to scream about it, but apparently he did. He realized later that the graining sound against his ears were his blood-curdling cries, and that he couldn't feel the left side of his head.

They never took him, in the end. The slave traders complained loudly that he damaged himself and would be of no value. The large man who tied him up, held him by his hair and threw him out of the cage.

After that it was black.

You'd think that after that experience, Wei Ying would have known how to escape people like these then.

He should have died. He should have died a long time ago. When the slave traders lured him in with promise of a meal, when a drunk man mistook him for someone else and beat him with shattered wine jars, when a cultivator feigned kindness and Wei Ying took his hand--

A-Ying should have died when he was 5 when-

(That was used on him several times, several ways, at this point the whole world knows his name. Maybe they were never addressing him really? And it's just so his foolish brain responded to every call hoping it was a-niang or baba who came back to get him.--

Hoping. He was hoping. Such a silly thing to do these days.)

The man wore purple robes, was surrounded by many people with purple robes. One of them approached when he didn't respond.

Wei Ying was 11 by now, 12 almost, he couldn't be blamed.

The robes were different-- a dark royal hue, but it was the same color of the- the same- and the man was approaching him too quickly he-

A child was never supposed to go through this pain. Wei Ying wouldn't know this, but he couldn't be blamed. A small tooth-dagger was plunged into the cultivator's abdomen and the man shrieked--- he couldn't be blamed.

He ran and ran and ran, the man who called his name ran after. His feet didn't acquaint well with the cold solid ground, it burned his skin ironically, but he ran with only fear to power him.

The man grabbed him by the shoulder and said his name again-- Wei Ying couldn't hear anything amongst the rapid beating of his own heart. Couldn't see quite clearly, couldn't think quite straight, he feared.

Wei Ying couldn't have been blamed. When carriage wheels screeched to a halt but it was too late-- and the man in purple had to let go of him one way or another.

He didn't stay too long to see what happened to him. He just ran and ran and ran.

Until there was no ground to run on. Until Yiling was no longer seen. Until he felt the last of his breath stolen from him.

Wei Ying falls falls fall-

His eyes close on their own, they can't be blamed.

Yes yes Yiling Wei Sect teaching safe and controlled demonic cultivation is very sexy but I think too many people overlook that Wei Wuxian is first and foremost an inventor! He is a man of science! Manipulating resentful energy and doing necromancy is only ONE of the many things this man has done or come up with that changed the cultivation world. Yiling Wei Sect AU where the burial mounds are crowded with workshops and laboratories, forges and studios. Little shidis run errands, fetching and carrying crafting materials, and in addition to the older disciples teaching cultivation there are also classes held for mundane trades and crafts, to be combined and reworked in new and incredible ways. Talismans, enchanted objects, spiritual tools and weapons, useful gadgets. Workrooms full of long, low tables where disciples work shoulder-to-shoulder on their newest inventions, shouting ideas and suggestions from one end of the room to the other. Swords are still traditional, but the Wei Sect is always inviting guest instructors to teach other forms of weaponry, and it’s not unusual for a student’s actual preferred weapon to be something other than a sword. Classes are chaos, students are encouraged to argue and debate, and no topic is ever considered “mastered” even by the teachers – there is always more to learn, to explore, to invent or re-invent. We teach all that is known, but not all that IS. Respect the old ways, but don’t be mindlessly obedient to them. Yiling being the fantasy equivalent of the most technologically advanced city in the world. Not all the things the Wei sect come up with are strictly for cultivation, after all. There are talisman-powered looms and plows that pull themselves and little crystal charms that store spiritual energy so that even non-cultivators can activate the flameless lanterns that light the town and the moving platform that will carry them up the mountain path, if they have right or reason to go visit the burial mounds. always found it weird that wei ying wasn't wearing the yunmeng 'uniform' in neither the donghua and drama when he was a teen - like, he's an important clan member. he's the clan's leader's adopted son and represents the clan alongside jiang cheng too

i'm pretty sure there's no description in the book regarding his clothes in the past - maybe expect for his iconic red rubon - but i've read it a while ago and could be wrong

anyway i know for a fact wwx would still rebel and wear mismatch clothes and colours to piss off the grown ups tho

And I really loved that for Wangxian. Excerpt: The air in the room chilled fast enough to make his skin pebble. The incense smoke curled, not toward the ceiling, but inward toward itself. Slow at first, then quickly. Thicker and darker, then with a grinding, squeaking noise like sand being crushed under a pestle and with some deeper, empty note like the aftermath of a scream of horror, it took form. Wei Ying. Wei WuXian. Robes black as night and decorated with blood red embroidery in shapes that made his eyes ache to behold. Blinking away tears that might have been the same reflexive action as looking at the sun, might have been the burn of that defiant, stubborn love given hope, Lan Wangji tore his eyes away from those impossible designs. Looking up, he saw Wei WuXian's hair was held back in twists and braids by jewelry made of what was unmistakably human bone. The top part of a skull was pinned to the back of his head, the straight lines of a forearm bone spearing through a twist of hair, the curve of a rib and a thousand tiny fingerbones and teeth dangling where beads and jewels would be. Wen Qing the Accidentally-Acquired Jiejie

Even though their relationship initially started off as a debt exchange—from Wen Ning rescuing Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, to the Wen siblings sheltering the two and conducting the golden core exchange, to Wen Qing begging Wei Wuxian to rescue her family—it settles into a surprisingly amiable relationship once the they and the Wen remnants settle into the Burial Mounds. Though she doesn't give him a pet name like Jiang Yanli does or like she, herself, has for Wen Ning, Wen Qing treats Wei Wuxian exactly like she did Wen Ning upon her introduction:

Wen Qing, “Calling me your sister now? I haven’t asked you yet. Since when have you been so bold? How dare you hide people! I’ve already snuck a few questions earlier on. So that was why you suddenly wanted to go to Yunmeng! How full of yourself are you? Who gave you so much courage? If Wen Chao knows about this wouldn’t he tear you to apart? If he really is set on killing someone, do you think that I can stop him?” She spoke quickly and clearly. Her forceful tone allowed for no objections. Wei WuXian couldn’t find anywhere at all to interrupt her. Wen Ning’s face was as pale as snow, “Sister, but Young Master Wei...” Wen Qing continued, voice stern, “I won’t say anything too much seeing that you did it out of gratitude and that’s an understandable reason. However, these two must not stay here for long! You came suddenly and left suddenly, meanwhile Wen Chao lost the two of them. Do you think Wen Chao is that much of an idiot? Lan WangJi’s face paled as he went to catch him, “Wei Ying!” Wen Qing, however, revealed three silver needles, scolding, “I have crueler things that you haven’t seen yet. Get up!” As if nothing happened, Wei WuXian got up from Lan WangJi’s arms, wiping away the blood at his mouth, “Please don’t. The cruelest is the woman’s heart. I wouldn’t want to see that.”

Wen Qing walked out from the kitchen on the side, holding a plate, “Hung them for you. We’ll make a few more tomorrow to hang in the mountain path. If you hurry around in the dark all the time, you’ll slip and break your bones sooner or later.” Wei WuXian, “I have you here even if I break my bones, don’t I?” Wen Qing, “I wouldn’t want to do more work. It’s not like I’m paid. If you break them, don’t complain if I hamper with your bones when I put them back.”

While her words may seem harshly blunt and biting, they belie her true caring personality. Though she rips into Wen Ning for endangering them by rescuing Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian simply because Wei Wuxian was nice to him, once, she immediately acquiesces to allowing the two to remain hidden under her jurisdiction, providing them with medication and a place to rest. Though she rips into Wei Wuxian for his reckless behavior concerning his health, she is concurrently treating his injuries and caring for him. She even teases him at multiple points in time around and about Lan Wangji, just like an older sibling teasing their younger sibling about a crush:

Wen Qing watched Lan WangJi’s expression with her inky eyes, “HanGuang-Jun, have a seat?” ... Wei WuXian, “But there’s nowhere to sit here, is there?” Wen Qing was indifferent, “Of course there is.” As she finished, she swept the things on one of the stone beds onto the ground, showing no mercy at all, “Look, now there’s a seat, isn’t there?” ... Laughter was just starting to fill the Demon-Slaughtering Cave when Lan WangJi turned around without saying anything and proceeded to walk out of the cave.

At the mention of the Cloud Recesses, Wen Qing glanced at Wei WuXian, asking him as though she didn’t care, “I forgot to ask you. You’ve never brought anyone up Burial Mound. What’s the deal today?” Wei WuXian, “You mean Lan Zhan? I met him on the way.” Wei Qing, “You met him? How did you meet him? You ran into him again?” Wei WuXian, “That’s right.” Wen Qing, “What a coincidence. I remember that you two ran into each other once in Yunmeng as well.” Wei WuXian, “There’s nothing special about it. A lot of cultivators from other sects travel in and out of Yunmeng and Yiling.” Wen Qing, “I heard you call him directly by his birth name back then. Quite bold, aren’t you?” Wei WuXian, “He calls me directly by my birth name as well, doesn’t he? It’s nothing. Got used to it when we were young. Neither of us care.” Wen Qing, “Really? Don’t you two have a bad relationship? Heard that it’s like you’re ice and fire, fighting every time you see each other.” Wei WuXian, “Don’t listen to the rumors. Our relationship really was quite bad in the past. During the Sunshot Campaign, we did get into a few fights because of our bad tempers. But afterwards, it wasn’t as bad as the rumors say. We’re so-so.” Wen Qing didn’t say anything else.

The final nail in the coffin that breaks down the separation the two have in Wei Wuxian's head is the banquet that the Wen remnants host for Wei Wuxian. Because of both his terrifying reputation during the Sunshot Campaign and the circumstances surrounding him becoming their protector, everyone except for Wen Qing and eventually Wen Yuan kept their distance from Wei Wuxian. But because of Wen Qing's faith in him and their trust in her, they still followed Wei Wuxian out of the Qiongqi Path labor camp and finally worked up the nerve to host a family meal for Wei Wuxian after he successfully revives Wen Ning's consciousness. This, in turn, touches Wei Wuxian so much that he no longer views their plight as a thankless and solitary undertaking:

Wei WuXian fished him up and tucked [Wen Yuan] under his arm, humming, “... Who cares about the crowded, broad road? I’ll walk the single-plank bridge all the night... All! The! ... All the night?” When he hummed the ‘night’ part, he realized that it didn’t seem like nighttime at all. He’d always walked up the mountain in the dark, but tonight, things were different when he was walking back. The area around the little shacks were swept clean. Even much of the weeds were removed. A few red lanterns were hung up in the forest at the side. All of the lanterns were made by hand. Hanging on the branches, although its round shapes were simple, it gave off a warm light that lit up the pitch-black forest.

The rest of them sat down along with him. When they heard his praise, they all beamed as though they had received the greatest compliment ever, and began to eat. It was the first time that Wei WuXian couldn’t tell what the wine tasted like. He was thinking, To walk it all the night... huh? It wasn’t really that dark at all. All of a sudden, his entire body felt refreshed.

So even though the two were initially tied together through a cycle of debt and repayment, this tie eventually gives way to a siblinghood unintentionally forged through mutual affection and unconditional trust in one another.

Much objectively narratively questionable about the Yin Iron arc but I actually love what the addition of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian setting off together as starry eyed young heroes does for the story. I’m really compelled by how much they seem to clearly be trying to get each other alone in this part. Lan Wangji is palpably irritated with Nie Huaisang for crashing their date (nhs and wwx both appear oblivious to this) and Wei Wuxian sneaks away from his brother to run after Lan Wangji and tells Nie Huaisang that they’re doing secret Lan Zhan and Wei Ying stuff - this is textually for secret quest reasons but I love how it works as romantic subtext too. There’s also a real farcical quality to the way that their Just Lads Romantic Quest keeps accruing additional members.

In addition to that farcical quality, it’s also just generally interesting from a tonal perspective - the Yin Iron quest feels like serious stakes upon first watch but it reads almost goofy if you know where the story is going.
