some people need to learn that if you stop enjoying something you don't need to immediately turn around and hate it. you can simply just. move on. it's okay.

I'm referring to the comments on this video because they give me a headache. No one thinks more about sex, and kids, and "kids in sexual situations" than pro-censorship people do. I don't know why they think book banning is "making sure the Kama Sutra isn't in elementary schools" but...it's not. It's really not. (I also don't like how most of the commenters are acting like the other side is just blowing things out of proportion and making a big deal out of nothing so they can hurt kids because that's what they were told. The first part of that rhetoric can easily be used by certain people to commit or sweep atrocities under the rug. And the second part, that's just the typical anti-lgbtq+ rhetoric...)
Anyway, that's not really the majority of the stuff that gets banned.
I only know about book bans in America so I can't speak about other places. And this is the site I normally use: https://pen.org/
Some of the top banned books were:
Nineteen Minutes by Jodie Picoult:
"Sterling is an ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens--until the day its complacency is shattered by a school shooting. Josie Cormier, the daughter of the judge sitting on the case, should be the state's best witness, but she can't remember what happened before her very own eyes--or can she? As the trial progresses, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show--destroying the closest of friendships and families. Nineteen Minutes asks what it means to be different in our society, who has the right to judge someone else, and whether anyone is ever really who they seem to be."
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood:
"In Margaret Atwood’s dystopian future, environmental disasters and declining birthrates have led to a Second American Civil War. The result is the rise of the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian regime that enforces rigid social roles and enslaves the few remaining fertile women. Offred is one of these, a Handmaid bound to produce children for one of Gilead’s commanders. Deprived of her husband, her child, her freedom, and even her own name, Offred clings to her memories and her will to survive. At once a scathing satire, an ominous warning, and a tour de force of narrative suspense, The Handmaid’s Tale is a modern classic."
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison:
"In Morrison’s acclaimed first novel, Pecola Breedlove—an 11-year-old Black girl in an America whose love for its blond, blue-eyed children can devastate all others—prays for her eyes to turn blue: so that she will be beautiful, so that people will look at her, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning, and the tragedy of its fulfillment."
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie:
"Junior is a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot."
Yes there are some of Sarah J. Maas' books on the list, but they're trying to ban that from high schools (teens and toddlers are different age groups people, please stop infantizing teens).
Censorship isn't really about protecting kids from "books that predators will use to groom them" or "child molesters", it's not about not giving kids access to sexual content when they're too young for it, it's really not about protecting kids at all, and it's not about getting rid of "icky sex books" in general.
It's mostly about control and having power, especially over LGBTQ+ people and minorities. It's about the people in charge getting rid of any narrative that they personally don't like or silencing any voice that doesn't resemble theirs (anyone who's not a straight white rich man really).
And it's not about the fact that "well you can still get these books so banned books are a myth!" It's the fact that people are trying to make it harder for students to access these books. Books that can help them. Maybe they're going through a difficult time, maybe they're struggling with mental health issues, maybe their home life isn't great, maybe there aren't many other people in school like them. And these books have characters just like them, going through the same things. And it makes them feel less alone or helps them realize things about their situation and come to terms with it. But these helpful stories are the ones targeted the most. And it gets harder for anyone who's even slightly different to feel like they belong or that it's okay for them to exist and be themselves. Books being challenged and removed from libraries is about making people conform to what the people in power want them to be, and again, what they want them to be is what they can tolerate and use.
PS: some schools in Florida also had to take away and review dictionaries for "sexual conduct" because of a relatively recent bill (that seems to also be against teaching students important sex ed, "along with requiring schools to teach that "reproductive roles are binary, stable and unchangeable"). But also the Bible is apparently still allowed, despite having all that stuff people claim to dislike.
#vent post#long vent#proshipper#proshipper safe#proshippers are welcome#proshipping#proship#people are hypocrites#it's not about protecting kids#look at what books are actually being challenged#and look at how they still allow books that include the topics you claim to be “protecting kids” from#it's only not allowed when it's the “wrong” people doing it#and they're trying to take away resources that teach students about themselves#sex ed is important#it's about knowing about your body#and yes it briefly teaches about sex but teaching people about their natural feelings and how to handle them#and how to have safe and consensual sex is also important#so is teaching people that not everyone is the same and it's okay to be different#different race sexuality gender ect#if someone says “it's to protect kids!”#be wary of them!#but people are...way too eager to blindly believe in any narrative that lets them point and laugh at someone else#Because most of them time at best they don't actually care or at worst they're harming kids#and again why are the pro-censorship crowd so fixated on kids having sex?#“you're against banning books? You want to sleep with a child then!”#why is that where your mind immediately went to?#you're the one who brought up sleeping with a kid unprompted#it's weird and not normal for this to always be on your mind and for you to relate it to every situation#despite always loudly crying how much you hate it#that just makes it weirder tbh these people are...not okay imo

There's something very interesting about watching white Americans (and to a lesser extent other Americans who are not Indigenous or Black) insisting anything (including rape and torture) is justifiable in "resistance against colonial occupiers", like, honey... what do you think you are?
You're gonna keep sitting there hypocritically believing you don't deserve to be raped or murdered, that your family's lives have value, that the children around you deserve to be protected, while advocating the exact opposite for people who aren't you. If something happens, if there's finally an uprising that you get targeted in, you're probably gonna be first in line pleading for help. Because you're so much more important, because you can't be blamed for being a colonizer because you decided so. Because it's easier to take that guilt and use it to celebrate and advocate for the rapes and murders of civilians on a different continent than it is for you to take that guilt and realize that it's yours. Because you're not as removed from American exceptionalism as you think you are. If you wouldn't wish it on yourself or your family, don't wish it on others.
"But they're colonizers!"
So are you. Why are you special? Why do you and your family deserve safety and peace? Why do you deserve the land you're living on and the resources you use? Why don't you go back to Poland or whatever country your family came from?
"But American colonization is over!"
It's not over just because you, the colonizer, says it is. Or is it that you have to comfort yourself with the thought that the indigenous peoples of your country are too weak and scattered to ever be a threat to you so you get to keep on living your life and never thinking about them?
But you still have that guilt so you overlay American history onto a conflict on another continent so you can pretend you're getting a re-do where you're not a colonizer.

Excited to edit the part of Illicit Affairs where after ten years of being apart due to the code and duty before deciding to be together Obi-Wan and Rhea have found out Anakin and Padmé are about to run and elope after like two weeks and are genuinely just tweaking. They're still overcoming their own religious guilt and trying to be logical about how to pull off their secret affair in the middle of a war and suddenly Anidala are eloping with no warning. Cue the screaming fights between sister and sister, and master and apprentice in the Naberrie family's garden when they try to break them up after catching them red handed.
"He's nineteen Padmé!"
"So were you when you met Obi-Wan!"
"Yes and Obi-Wan was still a padawan so that cancels the other out. You're a senator and a war just broke out! Marrying a teenager should be last on your list of priorities!"
Meanwhile...
"You will be expelled from the Jedi order!"
"So will you!"
"That's irrelevant!"

I know I said I wouldn't talk about this, but oh my GOD we are NOT comparing deporting immigrants to whatever the fuck is going on with Linguine Mansfield.
#yes I mangled his name on purpose I don't want the. god. '''stans''' finding this post#look. he's going to trial. people getting deported are not going to be given a trial. also people who have come here from another country.#yes even if they are here Illegally™. haven't done anything actually materially harmful to another person. they're literally just existing.#if what's-his-name did indeed VIGILANTE EXECUTE SOMEONE IN BROAD DAYLIGHT then he did actually do something I think is#genuinely harmful (<-because I believe vigilantism and executions and the death penalty are wrong. even if I hate the target.)#(<-which to be clear I DID hate said target. I hate insurance companies in general. I have since I was like. 11. do NOT test me on this)#if he's responsible then you cannot argue that there was no harm done or that he had some sort of inalienable human right to do that.#you CAN argue that people have an inalienable human right to HAVE A HOME AND FUCKING EXIST THOUGH.#you are all not serious people. you are not progressive. you do not care about others. you do not want there to be forward movement and#most of all you do not want to examine yourselves or your principles.#you want vigilante mobs of you and your friends to go around executing people you hate? I can't stop you from wanting that.#but at least be fucking honest that that's what you want. don't go on about hating the death penalty or being anti-prison or anti-cop.#like. lol. lmao even.#I know everyone's going to be a hypocrite sometimes but 90% of the people on this site (at LEAST) seem to want to turn hypocrisy#into an olympic sport

Idk what kind of people are even saying 'yes' or 'it depends'.
For example, writing fanfiction in which a canonically lesbian character has a relationship with a man; writing about a canonically asexual character having sex; etc.

Y'all, Viv frikn retconned Stolas's and Blitzo's ENTIRE relationship to the point where Stolas sounds like a hypocrite. Not only that, but she changed the kind of demon Stolas is supposed to be. YES! I'm gonna call it a retcon, cuz that's how I see it and that's what it is, you are not gonna change my mind so don't even try.
The things Stolas had said is a goddamn LIE!
Tumblr media
YES YOU DO!! YOU DID!!
You treated him how you treated the rest of the imp race! Calling him names like, "Itty bitty imp". You're a LIAR bro!
And then there's this?
Stolas: It's not an Imps place to protect a goetia is it?
Umm no??? No! It isn't! It shouldn't be. Stolas, you are NOT a damsel in distress! You are NOT a weakling! You are an IMMORTAL! You are a DEMON PRINCE with magical, powerful abilities. Nobody should have to come to your rescue like you're some kind of disney princess!!
Stolas: You speak just like that Striker friend of yours.
Yeah, AND THEY'RE NOT F**KING WRONG EITHER!! You're just proving them right at this point!!
Good god, do I wish Striker actually went through with that assassination.

This isn't recent art butttt if I'm gonna throw my AUs out here it might as well be one that I've got in the back of my head
Tumblr media
No Straight Roads x Armored Core 6! Is this just a way to mash two of my current favorite games together? Yes. Is it also because I love mech pilot AUs? Yes.

Mayday; Callsign "Junka", pilots Api, her chunky, hard hitting AC with a lot of close range combat, especially the pile bunker.
Zuke; Callsign "Bunka", pilots Laut, his more agile, medium range AC with pulse weapons and shield.
They stand currently for no corporation and aren't even willing to do freelance work for them. Instead, the two are targeting NSR, a primarly Coral based corporation hell-bent on controlling parts of Rubicon to expand their reach.
Little mini lore about them:
-Zuke used to work for NSR here alongside Eve, even if it wasn't for long. His current AC is not the one he worked with there. He fled NSR at some point due to some dire circumstances. He's an exceptional, professional pilot, but decides to keep it on the lay low. His suit still has his name tag on it. His AC still uses some NSR parts (which are all Coral based).
-Mayday used to pilot a Tetrapod MT before meeting Zuke. She did odd jobs and never really preferred any corp. Now, accepting offers for new parts for her AC from the other corps is a never due to "being hypocritical if she does that".
-They reside in the Grid 086 area, which Mayday is very familiar with. She might have dabbled in being a Doser (people who feed on Coral), but only because she aspires to be like her idol, Kural Fyra.
-They have different augmentations. Zuke's is unknown, but he got his while working with NSR. Mayday didn't have one prior to meeting Kliff (that's what she says), but hers is pretty shotty. The slight variation in their eyes are consequences of this.
-Mayday treats Ell.AI like it's her Tomodachi / child / pet. She spends hours and hours just playing little mini games with her on a dinky screen.
-They're dating. Def. Its a slow burn but they dating ♥️💥

In the book Cultish by Amanda Montell, I was introduced to the "thought-ending cliché" - it's commonly used by abusive groups but is not limited to them. This is a phrase that just kills discussion as everyone nods sagely because, yes, obviously. What's pernicious about them is most of the time people don't realize this is what they're doing.
One thought-ending cliché that I am absolutely tired of is when I point out how absolutely cruel a policy or law is and someone pops in with "the cruelty is the point". I don't think it's meant to be a thought-ending cliché, although at best it's still cliché.
The thing is, I don't care if the GOP is being cruel just to be cruel or if they're secretly unaware or if they are intentionally or unintentionally hypocrites or if they even care about such things. I'm by and large not talking to people who are hostile or indifferent to me on my socials.
What I do care about is the notion that we're just allowing ourselves to shrug and move on because *of course* it's cruel, *obviously* that's the point. There is value *to me* in still pointing out exactly what and why the policies are cruel and logically unsound.
Even if being terrible is the point, why give up and say, Well. There's no reason to outline why it's cruel because we all know that's all they're interested in?
I still find value in groping toward a less grim baseline by saying, No. This is cruel. This is wrong. It is cruel for these reasons.
I find value in saying, here is why this cruel policy can't even have the effect they're lying about it having.
Because for everyone who already knows that "cruelty is the point" there is another who didn't know HOW cruel it is.
It's a reminder, too, that it isn't just something to just ignore. The cruelty isn't something that we have to accept as our normal.

Celegorm but everything about him is 10x funnier because he's a chronic ainur fucker and just doesn't tell anyone about it. He looks inwards and decides marriage is between elves so deciding to roll around with maiar of the hunt is absolutely valid and not marriage. Who's ever heard of an elf marrying a Maia?
Elven polyamory may be illegal but it doesn't count if he's just ferrying kisses between Oromë and Vána- they're not elves. No, it's not hypocritical, what are you talking about. Just don't tell his father. What? No, not because of the whole polyamory thing, Feanor's just got a thing about Valar. Yes Celegorm is sure that's the only reason he doesn't want to tell his dad.

No bc I genuinely think people have no fucking idea how severe his situation is like bro
Jamil CANNOT talk to Kalim like they're best friends.
What if you were a servant and been told "your master is above you!!" your whole life?
Oh, you'd still treat your master the same as everyone else?
Yeah because you've been taught to be your own person. Jamil has not. That's the thing.
I feel like that's the thing of people who aren't able to grip on Jamil's hatred for Kalim. He's been taught that he is below Kalim. Everything in his life is about Kalim.
However, people just condense it and put it as "Jamil being hypocrital and abusive."
And yeah, he did abuse his magic.
He did was abuse his magic and betrayed Kalim's trust but what the fuck do you do when your life is below another person's and been told that by YOUR PARENTS.
And being hypocrital is such a weak statement considering that he is a servant and Kalim is the master who is RICHER and also STILL MAKES JAMIL DO SHIT FOR HIM EVEN THOUGH JAMIL IS LIKE "DUDE I DONT HAVE ANY TIME FOR THIS!"
And yes, he does still do shit for Kalim but THAT'S LITERALLY HIS JOB AND WHAT HE'S BEEN TAUGHT TO DO HIS WHOLE LIFE???
Resisting the Al-Asim family could get his family killed but yall are like "nuh uh, he could've talked to Kalim!!!"
