Xialong x Reader: Webtoons

Your boyfriend has some catching up to do

"Who's that?"

You look furtively at Xiaolong catching you simping over your little fictional guy. Actually, what the hell. There's no way he knows how weird you are over these characters.

"Oh, um. It's Seong Taehoon from Viral Hit."

Xiaolong takes it in, nodding once, then asks, "What's Viral Hit?"

"The webtoon! It's pretty popular."

Like a curious puppy, Xiaolong tilts his head, "Webtoon?"

"...Online comics? Naver? It's a pretty big deal in South Korea. I thought you might have heard of it." No response. "Sort of like manhuas? Mangas?"

You thought that might have provided a spark of recognition but Xiaolong continues staring blankly at you.

"Seriously Xiaolong, have you been living under a rock?" Honestly, how has he never-

"Any spare time we had, we were told to train. I haven't ever- I've never read..."

Xiaolong looks away, ashamed at his lack of knowledge. You feel like a complete asshole. You didn't even think. The guilt digs deeper when you apologise and Xiaolong acts as if it's his own fault for his shitty past life.

Trying to make it up to him, you download the app on his phone, show him the series and make a few further recommendations. You are determined to do this for him. Give him a do-over for his horrific childhood and teenage years.

It's a small gesture but it's a start.

"Huh, Xiaolong? Did you come to bed last night?" Rubbing the sleep from your eyes, you stumble into the living room.

Your boyfriend is in exactly the same spot you left him. Has he even moved an inch in the last, you check the time, 8 hours?

Looking extremely sleep-deprived with revealing bags under his eyes, you wonder if he has even registered your voice as you wait for his response.

A pause too long as his brain catches up, then, "Sorry Y/N. I've just been catching up on this."

You stifle a giggle, knowing the grip of a good story and comic all too well. Maybe you can make him a coffee to give him a boost. Or a night-time tea as a strong hint to please go to bed, at least take a nap.

As the water boils, you check your phone. A notification catches your eye:

"XIAOLONG! You spent HOW MUCH on coins for Webtoons?!"

This will sound very stupid, but I heard someone say that Xiao is more like referring to young people and that is the case of Mei and MK, so the chinese names of MK and Mei will no longer have Xiao when we say they are more adults? Does that also include other characters in Chinese media who have the word Xiao in their names?

It is not stupid! And while you kinda have an idea it isn't quite like that.

It is better to think of it like a nickname. Kinda like how younger children could have shorter versions of their names, similar like Robert = Bobby, Micheal = Mikey, or Stewart = Stu. Or rather like in Spanish names there are like Laura = Lauita, Alberto =＞ Albertito, Julio = Julito. Like these are not their 'official' names and there isn't really a certain point that a person grows out of being called an affectionate nickname (esp if it's by their parents or older relatives) but they are to be considered using it less when they are more adults.

As for Xiaotian and Xiaolong I can't say for sure if these are their real names (probably) or if these are nicknames similar to how MK is a nickname as well (standing for Monkie Kid). I'm not terribly familiar if Xiao is more of a common given name as I'm more used to hearing it as a term of endearment. I have seen some people like saying it like name a child 'Jr.' but I'm not sure if that is a fair comparison either.

I've only seen one other piece where like it's a real name and it was Xiaosheng (Little Sage) in like another xiouyji movie and that was pretty cute. He had to fight against Xiaopeng (little Peng) the son of the Golden Wing Peng. Very much like Jr. in this case. More often it was just nicknames to kids or adults by their elders.

In Lmk I can't say for certain if these are their like official names or like their official nicknames as I have no reason to think either really.

"Yeah, people usually call me Qi Xiaotian. But recently..."

This could be that MK is saying that has been his nickname since childhood and perhaps he is starting to go by something else. Or that this is just a wink at his new hero title "Monkie Kid." I cannot say really but you can take that as you will! Someone also had a similar question on Quora so you can see other people's answers that I think help clear up different perseptives.

Kenji's Best of 2024

2024 has been a crazy, hectic, and stressful year for me. I had to make some really tough decisions in the face of my imminent burnout due to my day job, the current state of politics here in the United States, and overall feelings of self-doubt and insecurity. I've been an active artist for the past ten years of my life, and for the longest time I felt like I wasn't getting to where I wanted to be.  But... seeing this collage, which is only a fraction of everything that I managed to do in the past year alone... I realize I've gotten FAR in my journey, and I should be proud of that. In this past year alone, I did the following:  -Did my first collab with an artist who does woodcut displays for gay bars and events - Got my first brand collab with Huff Aromas - Released my first real manga pages (even if that's on a hiatus for the next thing I'm doing)  - And... AND! Became an art director and character designer for an indie platformer-beat'em up hybrid game!  The me from my first year of college would be immensely proud of how far I've come. And despite all the rough shit coming our way... I don't plan on stopping. There will be more pieces to come, especially for Rock E Rumble. And also... I'll be doing more with the Shinobi Yokai and Liminal Displacement as OCs free to explore different things on the side with my friends and fellow furry artists.  Anyway, that's all for now. I'll see you all in 2025!

Thanks for the ask anon! Ohhhh I haven't written Xiaolong before! Gender neutral, a bit too short. And away we go.

Xiaolong x Reader: Asking

A partnership of equals is but a concept to Xiaolong.

Uneven power dynamics have been a constant in all his relationships. He's not even sure if he has had a real friend before you.

The first time you asked for his genuine opinion, he was stunned into silence.

When you asked him on a date, he wondered why, before realising there was nothing to lose but time.

When he said no, all you gave was a shrug with no further repercussions.

Then when he argued back, it didn't matter. You would never punish him, he could not be fired. It was liberating. Freeing.

He never tires of kissing you all over, of falling into bed together. Each time as exciting as the first.

Xiaolong had all the makings of a romantic at heart, neglected over time and shoved into a dark corner.
