To smile & laugh genuinely

To travel the world

To see the clouds turn pink when the sun sets

To see your family and friends smile when they look at you

To smile at yourself in the mirror

To have a happy & healthy family in the future

To taste yummy cooked meals

To dance outside in the rain

To run & play with your pets

To go on dates

To take warm baths in the winter

To have healthy nails to paint

To sit next to a campfire

To drive anywhere you want

To be strong

To feel comfortable in your skin

To cuddle with your pets late at night

To stargaze

To wear fuzzy socks & pj pants on a cold night

To play in the snow

To go swimming under the sun

To jump in a pile of leaves

To go on walks with your pets

To listen to music

To go on road trips

To make someone smile

To hear the words “I love you.”

To know it gets better

To think clearly

To care for your body

To light up a Christmas tree

To go Trick or Treating with friends or family

This poem is one I found hiding in my 2020 journal. I was 17 years old writing this. The world can be and is a scary place, especially more so if you are a woman. I had suffered with trying to fit into the unrealistic male gaze during my adolescence - not knowing these standards were ones inflicted upon me. It was only through education and reading that I could identify these stereotypes, standards, attempts of objectification and misogyny that I could safely move away from conforming to these ideals of not only what it means to be ‘beautiful’ but a ‘woman.’ Education is power and the fact that we have countries (like Afghanistan) where girls and women are losing the right to an education is heartbreaking, inhumane and a total loss of autonomy. It is the 21st century and we are still experiencing gender-based violence. It’s so important to speak-up and protect women: not only those you love but everyone.

I know this poem is quite short and only scratches the surface of a much deeper issue, but it’s definitely a starting point for having these types of conversations.

i learned that the invention of bicycles was fundamental to the early women's liberation movement. Bicycles promised freedom to women long accustomed to relying on men for transportation. It was also the main reason corsets and long skirts fell out of fashion in the early 20th century (x)

The world made me believe I was unfinished— A body to be sculpted, a face to be corrected, A woman to be improved.

They told me beauty had rules,

That my worth could be measured in inches, numbers, and approval.

Be thin, but not too thin. Look young, but don’t try too hard.

Take up space, but only the kind they find attractive.

For years, I tried to fit into an image I never chose.

But I am done waiting to be “ready,” done chasing an illusion.

I was never a draft. I was never incomplete.

The world doesn’t get to edit me. I am the final version.
