I just saw this TikTok by Taylor Tomlinson, I suppose some kind of comedian, saying: 'Nosferatu is just like Twilight, except all the actors are proud to be in it' and she might be right (I don't know what Robert Pattinson's latest opinion is), but still, something resonated in my mind. Why is everyone belittling Twilight again, as if it were 2010? Does she think she's funny or witty? Does she actually get paid for that? And then I remember that the comparison comes from Robert Eggers, the director of Nosferatu, in an interview belittling Twilight in an attempt to show why his vampire film is more serious and adult ('we deserve a scary, smelly corpse in vampire films again' boo 👻) than that movie about teenage lovers for teenagers (rolling my eyes).

Does he want to clarify that his movie is gothic horror, so why compare it to Twilight? For the love of God! Has Orlok eaten his neurons? If he wanted to demonstrate his level, he should have compared himself to Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, since at the end of the day Nosferatu is a loose adaptation of Bram Stoker's work. You choose your enemies, Eggers! And why is Nosferatu more serious and eloquent than Twilight? Maybe it's the photography, I think Twilight had its fair share of that. Is it the plot? Obsession is part of both stories. The fact (as the director pointed out) that the protagonist has this connection with Nosferatu, an old, decrepit vampire with baldness and a mustache, makes it more serious. What makes a young woman feeling attracted to an old man make it serious? Welcome back Lolita and daddy issues. In contrast to Bella, falling in love with Edward Cullen, a beautiful vampire, but ultimately a depressed vampire with a high degree of self-destruction who abhors his existence. That Nosferatu, both the original and the current one, are directed from a male perspective, even if the current one delves deeper into female obsession, a theme that Twilight also touches on. Even Twilight managed to become part of the female obsession of an entire generation.

Does Eggers think he can understand women's feelings about love and obsession with a vampire better than we do? He wanted vampires to be scary again, even if in the process he decided to cast Bill Skarsgård for the role of Orlok because even under all the clothes and the decomposing body, I know it's Bill Skarsgård (don't try to understand a woman's mind). I remember that at the premiere of Nosferatu, they asked everyone who they would prefer, Edward Cullen or Orlok, as if it had anything to do with anything beyond the fact that they're both vampires. The comparison shouldn't be with Dracula or Lestat (the father of handsome vampires). Almost twenty years later, Edward Cullen with his depressed, vegan, and too-beautiful-for-any-mortal body (Bella, this is the body of a monster) is still relevant, even to the point where they mention him in a clickbait-style achievement for a movie that I think will ultimately be just another passing fad, well done to them for selling tickets. Even if it's going back to old habits of belittling female tastes so that men can demonstrate why their interpretation of the world is the correct and most serious one.

BTW, I can hear Lestat laughing at Nosferatu for being on the wrong side of the family that's not handsome enough. Because even Dracula was handsome in the end. my notes:

my overall interpretation of this song is "I'm trying to break through the friend zone (friendship barrier) so that you like me instead of thinking of me as a friend", so any vagueness in translation went in that direction

The use of "lock horns" in the official translation snippet + the HAO motifs give me the mental image of like, a hand-to-hand kung fu battle, so I leaned towards that imagery whenever there was vagueness (as opposed to like, a military campaign, for example)
