→I think this line’s translation should be “It looks bad.” Although 悪いな(Waruina) can mean “sorry,” in this case Kyojuro is not apologizing but saying the shop’s business looks bad.

蕎麦屋「この沿線で、切り裂き魔ってのが出てるせいで、めっきり人出が減っちまったよ。雇い人にも暇を出す始末さ。こないだは、汽車の車掌がやられたってよ。それに、無限列車ってぇのが運行中止になっちまっただろ。噂じゃな、四十人ばかり乗客が神隠しに遭っちまったって言うぜ」

Fuku “I’m sorry. I feel like I’m always on edge these days because of the Slasher incidents.”

Kyojuro “Ima-shigata mimini-shita tokoroni-yoruto, anata-gatawa kurai uchi-kara junbi-shite, ware-wareno tameni bento’o urini kite-kureruno-dana. Jitsuni arigatai. Sono-yona hito-bitoga kizutsuke-rareru-kotowa, kesshite attewa nara-nai.”

Kyojuro “If what I was just told is correct, you two start working while it’s still dark out and come to sell us those bento. I couldn’t be more thankful. No one should ever hurt people like you.”

Kyojuro “Anshin-suruga ii. Kirisakimawa orega katazukeru.”

Kyojuro “But you can rest easy now! I’ll take care of the Slasher!”

親方「フン…車体に原因があるわけねえのに、巷(ちまた)では人喰い列車だ何だと噂されて、それが俺たちは悔しいんだ。だから運行再開が決まった今、精一杯の整備をして送り出してやろうと思ってな」

Oyakata “Fun… Shataini gen’inga aru-wake-nee-noni, chimata-dewa hito-kui-resshada-nandato uwasa-sarete, sorega ore-tachiwa kuyashiinda. Dakara unko-saikaiga kimatta-ima, sei-ippaino seibi’o shite okuri-dashite-yaroto omottena.”

Chief “Right, when there’s no way it’s a problem with the body. Word on the street is that it’s a man-eating train. You don’t know how bitter that makes us. So now that it’s being put back into service, we want to do all we can to get her back into shape and send her back out into the world.”

About Honorific Words and Titles / 敬語と敬称について

In Japan, the way people use words differs depending on their relationship with the person they're speaking to, or the situation at that time.

Also In English-speaking countries, when you call someone with "Mr." or "Ms.", it means he/she is in the position to be respected, I guess. It's similar in Japan, but we Japanese use 敬語(Keigo=Honorific Words) and 敬称(Keisho=Honorific titles) much more clearly as a matter of etiquette.

In "Frieren" stories, Fern calls Stark with "Mr." in spite that they two are in completely equal position. There is the following scene in episode 7.

When I saw this scene, the first thing I thought was that It would be difficult to translate into English, because there is no word for "tame-guchi" in English.

"Tame-guchi" means "how to speak to someone in an equal position". "Tame" is youth slang which means "equal" or "same age/position", and "guchi" means "mouth", and it's a new word which has been used for these 30-40 years.

In this case, Stark wanted Fern to talk much more friendly, but Fern changed her words suddenly into commanding tone, that made Stark shocked and discouraged.

In the above, pink colored sentence is translated as "I meant more like, can't you speak to me in a more casual or familiar way?". But in the original words in Japanese means "I meant more like, can't you call me with "san" or "kun" or something like that..."

We have some honorific titles;

No.1.様(sama): The most polite and respectful way of addressing someone, which is often used today.

No.2.さん(san): A common and polite way to call someone.

No.3.くん(kun): Mainly for boys or young men

No.4.ちゃん(chan): Mainly used for girls, or young boys before school

No.5.苗字で呼び捨て(myoji de yobisute=calling by last name without any title) : When a person in a higher position calls someone in a lower position, or between classmates, etc.

No.6.名前で呼び捨て(namae de yobisute=calling by first name without any title) : Within a family, from an older to a younger such as when a parent calls a child, or an older brother/sister calls a younger brother/sister, or only when we call a partner, boyfriend, girlfriend, best friend, or someone very close.

As you can see, Fern switched from "Shutaruku-sama"(No.1) to "Stark"(No.6) and said "Quit wasting time and help me already", instead of the words like "Could you please help me here?".

So I laughed but felt sorry for Stark at this scene.

Fern's way of speaking is always very polite, (although the content of her conversation is sometimes harsh...) not only to Frieren or Heiter but to any other people. Maybe it's because of her characteristic and also because she was taken in by Heiter, the highest ranking priest, from an early age and later studied under Frieren, who is not only the greatest mage but has been lived over 1000 years... Maybe Stark is the first person she has ever met who doesn't need to use honorific words, and she doesn't know how she should speak to him.

日本語でこれを読める人なら、この内容を逐一和訳する必要はないと思うので割愛しますが、日本のアニメを英訳する時に敬語や敬称をどう表現するかは結構難しいですよね。

フェルンは誰に対しても敬語で『様』呼び。ハイターは敬称を付けては呼ばないけど、パーティーメンバーに対しても、幼馴染のヒンメルに対しても、それどころかフェルンに対してもいつも丁寧語。

ヒンメルは誰にでもソフトで優しい語り口。アイゼンは少し堅苦しい年配男性な感じで、フリーレンは失礼ではないけど素っ気ない口調が多く、シュタルクは年相応な少し悪ぶった感じの言葉遣いです。

英語では例えばPleaseを付けるか、Could you～？Would you～？といった言い方が敬語っぽくなりますが、日本のように例えば会社で同期や後輩に対する話し方と、上司に対する話し方と、客先に対する話し方が全部違う、というようなハッキリした使い分けは日常であまりなさそうです。

ちなみにこの投稿を書くにあたって、グーグル翻訳で「タメ口」と入れてみたら、Tamero　と訳されて爆笑しました。

フェルンが今後シュタルクと距離が近付いていくにつれて、呼び捨てに変わるなんてことがあるでしょうか…？キャラ的にあまり想像できないけど、ちょっと楽しみですね。
