Oh dear god while writing this I thought too much about the implications of SOLDIER still existing in a world where pokemon battles replaced normal fighting. Maybe it was an experiment to splice human dna with pokemon to get humans to be able to fight using pokemon moves too? So like you go up against a SOLDIER, faint all 6 of their pokemon and think yay I’ve won, and then the SOLDIER just starts going after your pokemon themselves. They are their own 7th pokemon

What’s your opinions of the various ffvii compilation games?

Oh I am a huge proponent of the Compilation as a whole; I know that opinion is rare for someone who's been in the fandom from the beginning, but I'm an insufferable lore gremlin and I just eat up everything the series has to offer. I have three different copies of Advent Children (the original on DVD, ACC on DVD, and ACC on blu-ray) and even still watch Last Order on occasion.

The series itself is really fascinating and staggeringly consistent (I've talked about how the implied timeline of the Jenova Project as presented in-game is so consistent that it matches up with real-world human gestational science), with the exception of the FF7Re series—which I can deal with, since it's canonically on a different timeline and therefore any retcons there are literal in-universe retcons, which is pretty brilliant.

That said, I'mma put ratings for the pieces of the Compilation individually under a cut!

OG FF7: 9/10. would be 10/10 if the English localization were better. Where it all started, still one of my favorite games of all time.

Advent Children (+Complete): 8/10. Not a game, but part of the Compilation! Anyone who says the plot makes no sense doesn't realize that they're watching a sequel that relies very heavily on people understanding the history and characterization of every single character shown.

Last Order: 6.5/10. Also not a game, also part of the Compilation. Love that this is implied to literally be Tseng's coverup of what happened with Zack, presented in anime form. Makes no sense in multiple places as a result, but if you know that's what it is then you can 100% see why it's portrayed that way! Honestly I really enjoyed it and wish more people would appreciate it for what it is.

Dirge of Cerberus: 7/10. The gameplay kinda sucks but honestly the storyline is super good—or it would be, if the entire fucking prologue hadn't been cut from any release outside Japan, thereby leaving the entire issue with DeepGround completely unexplained to all other audiences. Once you know what is going on, the storyline here is fantastic, and I've never really forgiven SE for not releasing the rest of it. I love that Dirge fills in the lore for Vincent that was cut when he was relegated to "optional" in the OG, and that it also helps to clarify why Midgar could have 9 functional mako reactors while every other reactor in the world is either sputtering to nothing or exploding. (It's Omega. Midgar is built over Omega. It's the place where all lines of the Lifestream converge so that Omega can draw it all in and carry it away at the end of the world, and Shinra never discovered that's why the mako well there is so expansive. I love good worldbuilding, and Dirge is a beautiful example of that.)

Before Crisis: N/A. I want this game so bad man where is it give it to meeeee. Honestly tho I've watched playthroughs and read scripts where available, and while I don't think it looks like much fun from a modern gameplay perspective, I have huge respect for it as far as development goes. This is one of the first really mainstream mobile games ever made, it was made for flip phones, and it's super extensive! Also it gave me Veld, who is one half of my favorite ship ever, which means it automatically gets a 7/10 even if I've never played it.

Crisis Core (+Reunion): 9/10. As fun to play as the OG. When I first played this on PSP over a decade ago, it hit me with such an intense feeling of nostalgia that it almost took me off my feet. In spite of the dramatic difference between game mechanics in CC versus the OG, it felt exactly like playing the OG again, and that feeling never really left. Humanized Sephiroth in a beautiful way that pissed off a bunch of fanboys and made me fall in love with him all over again. Also introduced my second favorite FF7 character ever, Genesis, who is one half of one of my core FF7 ships, so A+ on that too!

FF7 Remake (+InterMISSION): 8/10. Had a lot of fun with this one, and it's beautiful, but it doesn't have a lot of replayability in my experience, which is a shame. Would have been 6 or 7/10 if not for InterMISSION, which was a fucking delight.

FF7 First SOLDIER: 6/10. This applies to both the Battle Royale and the title in Ever Crisis. I am not a fan of Glenn & Co. but I love 14 year old Sephiroth and really appreciate that extension of lore and worldbuilding, so it's a decent balance. I love that the opening cutscene for the battle royale literally filled a 20+ year old plot hole in under two minutes.

FF7 Rebirth: 9.5/10. The only things that could make me like this game more would be if Vincent were playable (although I understand why he's not and, in spite of him being my favorite fictional character ever, I agree with this decision), and fewer required minigames. Just cut like one or two. Or fix the controls, maybe. Glide de Chocobo is even more broken now that it's been patched.

how i feel about this character

so, tseng occupies a very interesting place for me. i adore him; as chinese (coded) diaspora, his character means a lot to me. i'm also terrified of ever really talking about him in public or to anyone i don't know well, because a lot of my headcanons for him are both deeply personal and not at all what popular fanon dictates for him, and i'm already over having to deal with randos deciding that my having the "wrong" opinion is their problem now, much less when it's something i know i'm gonna take more personally than usual.

also, from my impression of it, the turks fandom specifically seems both very unified and very difficult to get into, with most of the fans there having been around for decades, and. y'know. that's kinda scary too.

anyways i guess tldr; love him. usually avoid talking about him tho.

all the people i ship romantically with this character

so for the longest time i didn't actually ship him with anyone, and then @takenbynumbers converted me to tseeve. so now i ship tseng/reeve. dog loves cat. dog-coded cat loves cat-coded dog. deep down they are cut from the same cloth but the lives they've led and the ways they've had to cope mean they act very differently. and so on and so forth

i think other than that, there's no one i ship him with specifically romantically. sexually speaking, though, tseng and rufus definitely give the vibe that they smashed at some point during their whole mutualistic relationship thing, all professionalism aside. i also think tseng and vincent would have some really really spicy (onesided) not-really-hatefucking, because i see tseng as having a Complex about being constantly compared to the turk of turks throughout his career by the people he respects the most (which in this case i mean mainly veld)

idk, i think there's a lot of potential in his dynamics with other characters. it's just so rare to see him portrayed in fanworks as a driving force with his own ideals and motivations and not like, a side asset to rufus, so like... i'm open. i could be convinced. talk to me.

my non-romantic otp for this character

number one would probably be tseng and aerith. i adore them with a sibling dynamic. in ever crisis aerith convinces tseng to have a picnic with her at the end of her character quests and honestly i might have cried

tseng is overprotective to a fault when it was nothing more than another assignment; aerith cares deeply about tseng despite feeling stifled by his protectiveness. zack says tseng is the only one he can trust with aerith's safety, but tseng has always been there from the start. tseng may be aerith's jailer, but he's also one of her only constants and possibly the only guardian presence in her life. all that, and they aren't even close because they never have regular conversations with each other. you know. very normal sibling stuff.

personally, i headcanon tseng as having had both an older and a younger sister. he never found out what happened to his older sister, and his younger sister passed not long after he and his mother fled wutai. he's very aware that's part of why aerith is so important to him but he also doesn't do anything to challenge it.

i think their biggest tragedy is they both technically get to say their goodbye at the temple of the ancients, but in the end, it's not aerith who is the one who survives, and that makes all the difference.

tseng and zack get an honorable mention here as well :)

my unpopular opinion about this character

oh, this one... there's a lot. i think starting right from the fact that i don't ship him and rufus romantically. i've yet to see a compelling explanation for why tseng would exhibit the level of unquestioning loyalty that most fanon portrays him as having towards rufus. as far as i've seen, their relationship seems to be mutually manipulative and they're both aware of it. they're highly codependent on each other to survive throughout the crisis, starting from when the turks were facing the firing squad and rufus saw his chance to win over a key chesspiece-- but that sort of loyalty only lasts so long.

second place is probably that i headcanon tseng (and his mother + sisters) as not just diaspora from wutai, but refugees from the war where kisaragi godo took over (unified, some people might say) the wutaian continent. this took place before the shinra-wutai war, and is why after godo concedes to shinra, there are so many rebel factions that don't recognize the concession and continue to struggle for their independence. this is also why post-canon, even though yuffie keeps trying to convince tseng to retire and move back to wutai, he constantly refuses. he might not have a place in midgar but he knows he also has no place in wutai as it exists.

i assume this contradicts the remake trilogy (and especially will once part 3 gets to wutai for real) but oh well.

one thing i wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon

idk honestly i just wish we got to see more of him in canon in general. i know we won't get much of him in part 3, if anything, but even a cameo for the evacuation of midgar or something would be super neat. vincent and veld and tseng and reeve all in the same scene, with part 3-level glow ups??? sign me the fuck up

Ji-ho trying to act like a normal girl, though. I just imagined that scene from Killing Eve, but in reverse.

Ji-ho attempting to be 'sweet' and 'cute' like other girls her age, but it never reaches her eyes- which always look too 'dark' and almost dead inside. She makes adults uncomfortable because they don't know what to make of her: She has no kid-like manners, she walks around with the silent confidence of an adult and seems way too mature for her age, so they always can tell something is 'off'.

Verdot does not have a fucking clue what he is doing, so he has his wife buy her clothes, gives her spending money for food/neccessities, but doesn't teach her how to budget at all.

What do you think Tru's reaction would be to finding out Anakin had a Padawan? What do you think would happen if they met?

i. Tru and Anakin don't speak anymore, period. They are out of each other's lives. The only way Tru would know that Ahsoka became Anakin's Padawan at all would be through either complete coincidence or word of mouth in the temple. (He is a chosen one, and she is a chosen one's student, of course the news spread)

ii. Tru has doubts on whether Anakin can be a good teacher. He spent enough time around Anakin to get a glimpse into his flaws and he really did not like what he saw, it broke their friendship. On the other hand Ahsoka has complete faith in Anakin and she would not like if Tru ever brought his concerns up to her. Ahsoka thinks she knows Anakin (Tru also thought that for a time, and then he realized what he knows is a drop in a foul ocean.)

iii. His reaction is likely just that, concern for Ahsoka. Surprise that the Council allowed Anakin to be a guiding figure in the first place. He would catch himself thinking this entirely based on past experiences, and he would need to remind himself that it may not reflect who Anakin is anymore. Maybe Ahsoka has to point that out to him. (He is willing to give benefit of a doubt.)

iv. This does not stop him from noticing similar traits in Ahsoka and worrying a little. Maybe he would end up checking on Ahsoka from time to time. Ahsoka would not understand where Tru is coming from and she would likely be annoyed that he questions her / her master.

v. Ahsoka doesn't know who Tru Veld is, because like I said, Anakin and Tru parted ways, so any sort of introduction I imagine would go awkward. Perhaps it leads to Ahsoka digging on what happened / asking about it.

vi. Tru believes Ahsoka attacked the temple until proven wrong. Like, the moment it comes up he can picture it, Anakin has history of doing awful impulsive things, his padawan takes after him, he judges it with bias and bitterness.

vii. Something about Ahsoka proving she is not mini Anakin tho. The sins of the father should not be visited on the son and all that.

viii. Ahsoka's snarky quips are somewhat like Darra's. Maybe they could go along.

Thoughts on how tsengs "death" (his realization about Rufus being wrong) in rebirth (and OG), do you think rebirth handled it well?

I mean it was two totally different things. Tseng knew he was dying in OG. He knew he was going to live in Rebirth. He has no reason to be so bitter this time around.

Aeris also knew that he was going to live, which is why she's upset but not crying. She has no reason to feel alone or abandoned this time around.

Both Tseng and Aeris say things in that scene in OG that they don't say in Rebirth because he's very clearly going to live. In OG, Tseng's thing was "I'm going to die for a man who never valued me or listened to me even though I trusted him with my hopes and dreams" and Aeris's was "The only person on the planet who really understands who I am as a person is dying right in front of my face and the only thing he has to say to me is that he's sorry he couldn't do his job better."

But now that he's going to live, it's like...

Tseng's thing is "eh getting hurt is part of the job. Sucks to know that this isn't even what we were after, tho."

And Aeris's is "dude I can't believe he fucking stabbed you what the hell, man. Well, I still like you."

Like it's TOTALLY DIFFERENT LMAO the two scenes shouldn't even really be compared.

Also with Before Crisis being retconned, this changes Tseng's character a bit, too, since there doesn't seem to be a Veld anymore. It's hard to say what, exactly, is being kept from that general idea, though. We probably won't know until the series is finished.

And the hero with the fuck-off sword rode off into the sunset the way they always do but you're still here and you herd the cows by the cliff where you were tied up in your cleanest clothes waiting to not be alive anymore and sometimes you think that would be easier and when you don't come back one day, you can imagine it's a relief for everyone involved. Maybe you'll be the new thing to haunt the mountain, or maybe you'll follow down the road and listen for cries that sound like yours did. Either way, there's little left to fear. You know exactly how much your life is worth.

Wait I have more to say about 7R. I found out Nero and Weiss from Dirge of Cerberus show up in Yuffie's special episode thing as a boss and secret boss and I lost my absolute mind. I really love Nero and to see that anything from Dirge got added to the remake makes me go fkfncocnclcn Im just so happy Dirge isnt forgotten and realizing now that since the brothers, Leslie, and Kyrie are in 7R, and I read that Nojima and Nomura want to add stuff from the rest of the compliation into 7R, hence these four's inclusion, so Im really hopeful that more'll be added. Like hopefully Shalua, some of the other Turks from Before Crisis, maybe just some kind of reminder that Genesis and Angeal existed. Omg itd be nice to see them in a flashback or at least hear them mentioned.
