Hello, I'm Vanessa From Prismatic Skies

I am Vanessa. I currently live in New Hampshire with my husband, our three dogs (Lita, Daisy, & Juno), and 1 cat, Mimsy.

I make strong scented wax melts...you might of heard of me from Magpie Designs. That was me! I have changed my appearance and theme and decided it would be a good idea to have a new name to associate with the new look. Welcome Prismatic Skies.

“Oh this is a favorite,” Bernice gasps. “Halloween costumes.” 

“Mom-“ Alexa whines, placing a hand on the album in light protest, “put it down. Why’d you even pack these?” 

“It’s tradition!” Bernice flips the book open. “And it’s funny. You girls were a hoot.” 

Alexa looks like she wants to die. Kat’s matching her expression eerily well. 

Huh. Sisters.

Josh considers the situation he’s in - something he’s done many-a-time since last week. He had been on the phone with his best friend in the world when an agonized groan came from her side of the line. 

“Shit.” 

“Kat?”

“Sorry. Thanksgiving’s this week, huh.” It’s supposed to be a question. Something tells him it’s not. 

“Yeah,” Josh answers slowly. 

“My family’s in town. Mom’s renting out a place in Mountport for the week to get us all under one roof again. Lex’ll be there. Carm won’t, lucky bastard.” 

“Kat, love, I know your family’s not great, but is there a specific hold-up? I mean it’s just a couple of hours.” 

“They’re like, wildly out of touch,” Kat starts. He hears the thump of her setting her phone down and waits a second for her to switch to speaker phone. 

“Meaning?” he prompts. 

“Super duper strange and super duper homophobic.” Josh would bet money she’s doing pathetic little jazz hands to accentuate her point. 

“Haven’t seen them in years, either, so they don’t- wait. Hold on.” 

Josh, dutifully, holds on. 

“Do you have plans on Thursday?” 

“Nope.” He pops the ‘p’ for emphasis. 

“I think we can agree that we’re soulmates, yes?” 

“Platonically, I would absolutely say so.” 

“I have an idea,” she says, “and you can absolutely say no…” 

And so now he’s looking at photos of baseball legend Alexa McGovern (when she was ten years old Alexa Renee Faulkner), grimacing as she holds a newborn Katrina Eileen Faulkner. 

His “girlfriend.” 

“Alexa went as a Ninja Turtle for five consecutive years,” Bernice points out. Her finger traces the purple bandana around young Alexa’s eyes idly. “The girl one, of course. Purple always was your color, dear.” 

Sorry, the girl one?! Josh was beginning to understand what Kat meant by “out of touch.” He tries for a polite smile. 

“We thought you were going to grow up to be a ninja turtle,” Kat’s father (Theodore?) adds with a wink. “You were a blessing to shop for.” 

There’s a general buzz of laughter from the room. Kat just hums an affirmative through a tight-lipped smile. 

“Oh, and Carmen,” Bernice sighs, flipping the page. “She always made her own costumes. Big on expressing herself. She was our quiet storm, hm Teddy?” 

“Our little black cat,” Theodore supplies. 

Score. Josh got his name right.

“Remind me where she is, Bernice?” Alexa’s husband, Morgan, asks the question like he already knows the answer. 

“Touring with her band, dear,” Bernice responds absently. “She’ll be home in Prairieville for Christmas.” 

“Touring with her emo band,” Vanessa interjects. She’s the youngest one here, a Freshman in college. Kat’s niece. 

It’s evident she’s trying to press some buttons. He can kind of see the resemblance from that fact alone. 

“It’s not emo, Vanessa.” There’s a vicious chastisement behind Bernice’s mild words. “She’s simply expressing herself.” 

“Her band name is Every Place I Cry, Grandma.” 

Carmen. Carmington Tre?! 

Yet another thing they have to talk about on the way home. 

“Now young lady, you are reading too far into things! Carmen is a deep thinker.” 

“She believes in horoscopes. So much so that she talks about it every week for public consumption,” Vanessa points out drily, “not much depth there.” 

“You’re young.” Bernice looks furious. “You don’t understand the nuances.” 

“Kids and their labels, Bernice. Ain’t got no education, but a buttload of opinions.” Theodore wheezes a laugh. 

Josh hates every word that comes out of this man’s mouth. 

He pokes at Katrina with his elbow. 

“Hm?” she asks, a filler more than anything. He leans to speak into her ear. 

“So one of your sisters is a baseball player who grew up wanting to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and the other is in an emo band, co-hosting an astrology podcast as a side hustle.” 

“Mhm.” 

“And you’re the lesbian?” 

She laughs at that, nudging him back. “Shut up.” 

Kat’s Aunt Camilla smiles at the two of them. “Swapping secrets, lovebirds?” 

Josh matches her energy alarmingly well. “No ma’am. Katrina and I have no secrets.” 

It’s not at all an answer. Like, truly. But it’s exactly what Camilla wants to hear. 

“An honest man is hard to find these days, you know,” she coos. “You’ll do nicely for our Trina.” 

He readjusts their arms, still intertwined, to grab Katrina’s hand firmly. “I hope so.” 

She hates being called Trina. He squeezes twice. 

I’m sorry. 

She squeezes back. 

Thanks. Not your fault.

“You wanna grab the cranberry sauce from the car, love?” he asks, fishing for his keys. He meets her eyes. 

Take a minute. Before you kill your whole family. 

He can see her response in the crease of her brow. They might kill you. 

Then only be a minute. He smiles lopsidedly. 

“Got it, hon.” She grabs the keys from him and plants a kiss on his forehead.

The cold air somehow feels less brutal than the incomprehensible energy inside the “Faulkner house.” Katrina exhales, taking it in. 

“Alright, cut the crap.” 

Vanessa is propped up against the wall dividing their rental and the neighboring property. Katrina looks at her niece in bafflement. 

When did she get here?

“You’re gonna have to be more specific, kid.” 

Vanessa quirks an eyebrow at that. It’s like they’re in a stand-off right now. Stakes feel high. But what are the stakes? 

“That guy is not your boyfriend.” 

“Yeah, Ness, I hired a guy on findmyarmcandy.com,” she snorts. “Caught me.” 

“Oh I’m not saying you don’t know him.” There’s something overly sweet about the tone she’s using. It’s familiar. 

You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. 

It’s like Mom. 

Katrina doesn’t like it. 

“I’m just saying you’re obviously a lesbian.”

Oh. Katrina doesn’t like this at all. 

“Woah dude,” she starts, palms raised. Defensive. “Back up.” 

“Am I wrong?”

Katrina’s an excellent liar. Most of the time. She’s always been good at slipping through traps - weaving her way through teenage life under her parent’s watchful eyes, through moves and jobs and relationships. A quiet, calculating, unremarkable youngest daughter. An actuary to her core - risk-averse and crafty as anything. 

But recently, she’d gotten awful good at being seen, too. At taking risks. At opening up. At bearing her true self with pride. 

Damn. Josh ruined her. 

She inhales sharply then lets it go. Fine. This is fine. 

“No,” she says carefully. “You’re not wrong.” 

As expected, Vanessa’s eyebrows shoot up strikingly fast. 

“You gonna tell your mom?” she challenges. Ness loves an argument. The more steam Katrina can get her to blow off now, the less there is for later. 

“Dunno.” Her eyebrows are still raised. “Are you gonna tell my mom?” 

“Haven’t thought that far,” she says, because she honestly hasn’t. Lex has always been a level of unattainable Katrina hasn’t even wanted to process.

Vanessa shrugs. A peace offering. 

“Fair. I don’t want to tell her either.” 

Now Katrina’s the one who’s shocked. 

“Don’t want to tell her I’m gay?” 

“No. I don’t want to tell her I am.” 

“Oh, Ness-“ 

And before Vanessa can protest, she’s wrapped in Katrina’s arms. There’s nothing but them in the mist for a minute. Then, Katrina begins to speak. 

“The guy in there? The one I’m with? He’s my best friend in the world,” she starts, swaying the two of them gently. “And he’s the only person I have protecting me. He chose to do that. Now the cool thing is,” she wants to look Vanessa squarely in the eye when she says this, “you’ve got the both of us. And I know it’s not as good as having a full family of people that accepts you, but it’s a start. Your people will choose you.” 

Vanessa looks suspiciously close to tears. “Yeah. Thanks.” 

Katrina smiles. “You got yourself a girlfriend?” 

“Her name is Brittany and she’s the coolest person I know.” Gosh, the way she lights up so immediately is infectious. 

Maybe there is something good about the holidays. 

“Good. I wanna meet her.” 

“Only if I get to meet yours.” 

“Wh-“ 

“Don’t even, Aunt Katrina.” Vanessa shoots her a mischievous grin. “Takes one to know one.” 

Katrina laughs. “It’s a deal. Now come on, the Tofurkey’s gonna get cold.” 

“Ugh, let it.” Vanessa wrinkles her nose. “Shit’s disgusting.” 

“Language, Ness. Let’s go.” 

They both know she means nothing by it. 

Josh is at the door when they walk back in. Vanessa nods to the two of them, sauntering past. 

“Miss me?” Katrina teases. 

“That was more than a minute,” Josh says lightly in reply. “You’ll tell me later?” 

“You bet your ass, babe.”

“Ew, babe.” Josh sticks his tongue out in distaste at the pet name.

She chuckles. “If you think that’s gross, I’d love to see your reaction to the Tofurkey.” 

The Tofurkey is terrible. Not because he hates tofu (he doesn’t), just because Bernice doesn’t know how to cook. 

The debrief after they leave in Kat’s beat up Chevy is far more filling. Soul food, if you will. The lightness in her is so obvious when they’re together. He missed it when she was with her family.

Huh. She shines brighter when she’s with him. 

The waning minutes before they go to sleep, wine drunk in Katrina’s apartment, are gentle. They take opposite ends of the couch, their legs intertwined in the middle. Kat taps her toe against his shin. 

“Hey,” she smiles sleepily. “Grateful for you.” 

“Hey.” He smiles back. “Grateful for you.” 

They fall asleep like that, with the knowledge that there are people that make life worth living. 

And that the search is worth it.

IN THESE TIMES

DES MOINES, Iowa — Wearing bright yellow Crocs, carrying a backpack and holding a clipboard stacked with papers, Ahmed Musa listens intently to a student. You would be forgiven for thinking Mr. Musa was a student himself; it is ​“staff dress like a student” day during spirit week at Theodore Roosevelt High School, and Mr. Musa looks the part.

Then again, Mr. Musa, 24, was a Roosevelt student not too long ago. He graduated in 2017.

He is talking with senior Jackie in a second floor hallway. She is animated, her purple and white braids falling across her baby blue N95 mask as she explains a problem. She is the president of the K-Club and there was an incident among members. The K-Club, she says, is about all things K-pop, from Korean music to food to movies to fashion. Mr. Musa laughs — he thought it was the ​“Kulture Club.”

Jackie goes on to give a broad overview of the situation: Racist and homophobic memes were posted in the group’s online chat of several dozen members. Tempers flared and arguments spilled over from social media into the classroom. Then a shouting match erupted during a club meeting. Fortunately, it didn’t come to blows. Members contacted the club’s teacher-advisor who contacted the school’s ​“restorative practices” team.

As a restoration facilitator, Mr. Musa’s job is to listen to problems and help students find solutions. Talking with Jackie that morning was the first step (a ​“prerestorative conference”) toward a formal ​“restorative circle.” Restorative circles are a group activity meant to help repair harm and restore relationships.

Jackie was one of several students I spoke with during two week-long visits to Roosevelt this year — once in the spring and once in the fall — to witness the school’s implementation of its new restorative practices program. Vanessa, a freshman struggling with the transition from remote learning during Covid, and Yonathan, a sophomore caught with drugs and weapons at school, were also among them. (Students involved in the RP program are referred to by first name to protect their privacy.)

Before the pandemic, armed officers known as ​“school resource officers,” or SROs, from the Des Moines Police Department would patrol the school hallways. But during the summer of racial justice marches and protests after the police murder of George Floyd, students, parents and community members spoke out against SROs at Des Moines School Board meetings. In the end, the police contract with the schools was terminated. After scrambling to make remote schooling work during the long, mournful slog of the pandemic, Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) were left to find a way to reimagine school safety — and fast.

The district moved quickly to implement restorative practices, an increasingly popular educational model for school safety, violence prevention and mediation.

The 2021 – 2022 school year was a huge opportunity with the highest of stakes: DMPS could become one of the only districts in the nation to succeed in concurrently removing SROs and implementing restorative practices, or the district and its students could be thrown into crisis.

Restorative practices (RP) derive from ​“restorative justice,” which is used to bring together, in mutual agreement for mediation, the victim and the perpetrator of an offense. The goal is typically restitution for harm caused while helping the perpetrator restore community ties.

In education, ​“practices” is often swapped in for ​“justice” because it involves children who aren’t in criminal proceedings. Formal conflict resolution, after a dispute or rule-breaking, does play a role, but RP is also proactive, explains Anne Gregory, a Rutgers professor and one of the nation’s leading RP experts.

One core proactive practice is ​“check and connect.” This might be as simple as having teachers and staff say hi to each student as they enter the school, or asking a student between classes how their day is going. When there’s an issue, students can then sit down with a trusted adult to build ​“their own insight into themselves and what’s driving their behavior,” Gregory says.

Gregory emphasizes that relationship building is a two-way street. These micro-interactions of ​“check and connect” also change how teachers see students. They undermine ​“overgeneralization [and] negative stereotyping” and create space for understanding, Gregory says. When a student has ​“attendance problems,” for example, the right mindset involves ​“thinking about and understanding what’s going on for the family of that student that morning in getting out the door” — which is a ​“very different approach,” Gregory adds, from ​“sending a police officer to your house the fourth time you’re truant.”

No, no, no, no, no smut or nsfw stuff! I am a minor and I don’t have experience writing or feel comfortable writing that stuff.
