i love playing with the idea that mairon thinks of himself and annatar as two different people
he's like a little method actor and when he thinks of his time in eregion he's like those were annatar's friends and annatar's home and when he's torturing celebrimbor and celebrimbor says 'i thought you were my friend' he says 'no annatar was your friend'

The wielders of the three rings all three had the opportunity to seize the one...
We know Galadriel and Gandalf's fears about how it would turn them into a second Sauron but I wonder what Elrond's dark side would have looked like? Elrond who twice in his life could have taken it. Once by force the other by nature of being its guardian had it been left in Rivendell. Is that part of the reason why he wouldn't have it stay in Rivendell? He was afraid of temptation or was he both wise and disinterested like Faramir.

not even JRR Tolkien, who famously developed the concept of the Secondary World and firmly believed that no trace of the Real World should be evoked in the fictional world, was able to remove potatoes from his literature. this is a man who developed whole languages and mythologies for his literary world, who justified its existence in English as a translation* simply because he was so miffed he couldn't get away with making the story fully alien to the real world. and not even he, in extremis, was so cruel as to deny his characters the heavenly potato. could not even conceive a universe devoid of the potato. such is its impact. everyone please take a moment to say thank you to South Americans for developing and cultivating one of earth's finest vegetables. the potato IS all that. literally world-changing food. bless.

nothing, just tolkien originally writing down the hobbit because his son christopher kept complaining that he'd change the details from night to night and then christopher later being so crucial in taking tolkien's notes and turning them into fully written novels of worldbuilding. loving someone to the point of creation and then having them help you finish the job.

What if you were born during a WAR and your dad became a STAR and your mum became a BIRD and your people were KILLED and then you and your twin were KIDNAPPED and then your kidnappers either DIED or fucked off to the BEACH and then your twin chose a MORTAL LIFE and then you became a HERALD and then your King got given a really cool RING but there was ANOTHER WAR because SAURON WAS ACTUALLY the RING GUY and then your King DIES and then your cousin/wife gets ATTACKED and then she SAILS and then your Foster son falls in LOVE with your DAUGHTER and then there's ANOTHER FUCKING WAR because SAURON IS BACK and then your daughter also chooses a MORTAL fucking LIFE and then you just FUCK OFF TOO but your twin sons didn't make up their MINDS

I feel like 99% of the Silmarillion fans forget that Fëanor was actually a very likeable guy for most of his life.
That is literally a significant part of why people followed him. A lot of people loved and admired him. He wasn't mean to random people, and definitely not "a toxic husband/father." The whole point of his story is that he was universally beloved, which is what made his fall so impactful.

Somebody give me the rights to the LOTR cinematic productions so I can create a coming of age dramedy taking place during the seventeen years between Bilbo's 111th birthday party and Frodo leaving the Shire. I'd call it "The Shire Seventeen". It would not only include the Conspiracy as a backdrop but also a bunch of the development and growing up that was probably done within those seventeen years, that is entirely unrelated to the Ring.
It's a whole seventeen years worth of low-stakes hobbit Shire drama and shenanigans, guys-- I need that cozy comedy content.

Lotta fics with little elrond and elros tend to have Elros being more drawn to fighting and Elrond to healing, which is all well and good
But I propose to you an Elros who was the first to lean towards healing and medcines. 'The hands of the king are the hands of a healer, and so shall the rightful king be known' is Aragorns sign, and he is from Elros' line.
For sure both of them have that association and Elrond choosing Immortality means he likely surpassed Elros in terms of skill just for fact of living longer but Elrond was Gilgalad's Herald and Bannerman, in my mind he began as the fighter and Elros began as the healer

I know I’m probably repeating myself but no other media or fandom has ever brought me this much comfort as Tolkien’s work and everything related to it. every time I read the books, watch the movies or tv show, play games or listen to the music it brings me so much peace and joy and no matter how much time passes I always look at those things with fond smile and affection cause this is my comfort place.

I understand that Sauron put his power into the One Ring so he could control the other rings and through them, the leaders of Elves, Dwarves, and Men. But when the One Ring was destroyed, why was his power also destroyed? Why didn't all that power return to Sauron, making him even stronger?
