Garry Shead (b 1942, Sydney) is one of Australia's most celebrated contemporary figurative painters, with his work steeped in allegory and symbolism, inviting spiritual, philosophical and historical interpretation.
"Garry Shead is regarded as one of Australia’s finest narrative painters and printmakers. Along with Sidney Nolan and Arthur Boyd, Shead has illuminated the Australian story and its myths to a wide and appreciative audience. His imagery has an ability to transcend the personal and reach into that universal realm of shared meaning. The inspiration behind one of Shead’s enduring narrative series was the novel Kangaroo written by the great English novelist, essayist and poet, D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930). Shead had developed an affinity with the writings of Lawrence during a trip to Papua New Guinea in 1968, and, in Kangaroo, this would trigger a resounding deep-felt response to the distinct Lawrentian narrative that Lawrence himself described as a ‘thought-adventure’.
After arriving in Fremantle in May 1922, Lawrence and his wife Frieda travelled to Sydney where they soon found themselves in the small coastal village of Thirroul, renting a seaside bungalow named Wyewurk. It was here the adventure began - an adventure that would last less than three months and produce the novel Kangaroo in just over six weeks.
The emotional complexity of the novel radiating from the protagonists, the poet/writer Richard Lovatt Somers and his wife Harriet; the simmering nationalist urges arising from the aftermath of World War I; the socialist ideal for a more equal society, all played out against the implacable backdrop of the bush. While the ocean and beach to the east reflected a feeling of purity and pleasure, the bush to the west remained a dark, impenetrable mystery - a brooding presence.
This contrasting impact is reflected in two fine disparate works by Shead. The Cliff 1992 is in many ways an antipodean seaside idyll with a twist; while The Visitation 1993-94 could be construed as a premonition of a long overdue reckoning. In the former work, the lovers are interrupted in their reverie by the presence of a raucous kookaburra. The scene is inspired by the steep cliff face at Thirroul overlooking the sea. Shead locates the cleansing sea as a place of respite – of atonement. In addition, the menacing posture of the kookaburra implies an unwelcome presence. The lovers could be seen as intruders, ignorant of the deep time that has forged a unique and mysterious landscape and culture. The precarious proximity of the cliff face in relation to the lovers also signals the tenuous hold the European mindset has on this land.
The lovers could be seen as the protagonists of the novel, Richard and Harriet, or perhaps Lawrence himself and Frieda. Yet again, it could be Shead and his then wife, Judit. In any event, there appears to be a pesky kookaburra to contend with, adding a comic note to the clifftop coupling.
In The Visitation, Shead has painted a curiously disturbing composition. The presence of the male Indigenous figure standing on the veranda railing appears real yet strangely dreamlike. Probably from the local Dharawal people of the Illawarra, he is adorned in ceremonial markings signalling the gravity of his ‘visit.’ Curiously, the symbolic image of Kangaroo, leader of the ultra-right movement who once dominated Lawrence’s thoughts, has now receded into the background. The local political intrigue and its concomitant of players falls to the wayside. The writers’ thoughts are now focused on the indigenous presence that has survived theft of lands, atrocities, and systematic marginalisation. In the novel, little detail is revealed about an Aboriginal presence in the landscape. Yet, early in the novel Richard Somers does confront the ‘spirit of the place’1 while walking in the west Australian bush. The anonymous narrator of the novel delves into Somers’ predicament as he confronts his fear of the bush: ‘As a poet, [Somers] felt himself entitled to all kinds of emotions and sensations which an ordinary man would have repudiated. Then he let himself feel all sorts of things about the bush … Waiting, waiting – the bush seemed to be hoarily waiting. And he could not penetrate into its secret. He couldn’t get at it. Nobody could get at it. What was it waiting for?’
To further appreciate Shead’s The Visitation, one needs again to delve into the text of the novel, tracing Somers’ and Lawrence’s apprehension of the place: ‘He felt it was watching and waiting. Following with certainty just behind his back. It might have reached a long black arm and gripped him. But no, it wanted to wait ... It was biding its time with a terrible, ageless watchfulness, waiting for a far-off end, watching the myriad intruding white men.’
Back on the veranda at Wyewurk, one senses the beginning of a dialogue between the invader and the usurped. Thirty years since Shead painted The Visitation, the nation is now finally focused on reconciliation. Perhaps in time, we will witness this ‘far-off end.’

Landmark CJCB-TV television tower in Sydney being taken down after nearly 70 years
You could see it from almost anywhere in Sydney, N.S., but after nearly 70 years the old CJCB-TV broadcast tower is being taken down.
Though the tower at the top of Hardwood Hill has overlooked the city for generations, it was more than just a physical landmark.
The tower helped make broadcasting history by sending the first televised signal from Cape Breton in the earliest days of the medium in 1954.
"Greetings from Cape Breton. This is indeed a noteworthy hour in the history of electronical home life in the Maritimes,” the late Nate Nathanson said on that historic broadcast.
Through the rest of the 20th century and into the 21st, the tower helped broadcast untold hours of local television and was a constant presence in Sydney.
"I just hate to see it come down, because it just brings back so many memories over the last sixty years,” said Rev. Bill Burke.
As the pastor at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic Church, located just down the hill from the former CJCB Sydney television station, Father Bill Burke has worked in the shadow of the tower for years.
"I find that everything is becoming so centralized in large areas, and we're losing the local touch, and the local touch is crucial,” Burke said.
Doreen Somers has lived next to the tower for 40 years in a neighbourhood called Tower Heights, named for its proximity to the television tower.
"Well, I'm going to miss it,” Somers said. "And you'd always say to somebody, they'd ask you where you live. Up by the tower. By the TV tower."
As crews started taking the tower down piece-by-piece on Tuesday, some residents took pictures and video of the action from below, or simply observed.
Some see the tower’s demise as the end of an era.
"It's just always been there,” said lifelong Sydney resident Terry Martell. "People see things come and go, and I guess this is one of them."
A Bell Aliant spokesperson says the tower will be replaced by a new cellular tower to help improve service for nearby communities.
The tower is expected to take a few days to be fully brought down.

Holby City S20 E20 Blind Spot
Funny old episode here.
Quite impressed with the Fletch/lover misdirect - I’d have had Fletch and Sydney spoiling for a hook up, so I didn’t really see Abigail happening. And it seems clear she wants more than a one off - who knew he had it in him?! ;-)
So, poor Jac. Take a few weeks extended holiday, and you’re out of sight, out of mind - but I suppose it’s a set up for a pretty high velocity love triangle: CEO/Head of Cardiothoracics/Director of Nursing. Ouch. When is she back? I miss her!
I suppose there should have been an inkling for me when Abigail didn’t immediately shut down his standoff with Sydney about agency nurses, but I guess the message got lost in the whole ‘Fletch has a tough life’ storyline. Mikey wore on me a bit tonight, with his hang dog looks and his extended pauses. His glee at perhaps being off the hook because his victim was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma (that is NOT lucky, Donna. That has a pretty shit prognosis...) struck me as delightfully psychopathic though, although I appreciate it’s highly unlikely that it was meant that way. But hey, I take my amusement where I can find it!
On to Hanssen. Aside from his unacknowledged trauma from the Fredrick event, I think it’s a very interesting avenue to explore how his quite marked OCD would fit in, in a clinical environment, so I was glad to see it touched on tonight, in his efforts to control every minute aspect of every patient on the ward - even though it was thrown under the ‘trauma’ blanket, rather than the everyday OCD struggles blanket. I’m not sure that this tendency would disappear with trauma counselling, since this is such a deepseated personality trait of Hanssen’s, but I’m guessing we won’t see much of a resurgence regardless. I did very much enjoy Hanssen discovering how much his staff cared about him, from so many sources. Bravo, Holby team, we all adore this man!
I also very much appreciated Sacha standing up to Hanssen and warning him that his actions are creating more work, rather than solving problems. So much of the time, Sacha is portrayed as a soft touch, never more so than in this episode - so it was really important and quite delightful to see that he’s not a man than shirks his responsibilities, even if it means standing up to someone who until recently was his superior - no mean feat for anyone.
I felt so sorry for Sacha tonight - and it pains me, how many episodes I’ve been able to say those words about. Shunned by his children (ok, perhaps shunned is a strong work, but you get my drift), not taken seriously about his project. I have to say, I think his project is really quite interesting. But that might be something to do with my biochemistry degree with phys/pharm. But regardless, Serena summed my thoughts up really well when she gave Sacha the pep talk in Pulses, about how something doesn’t have to be flashy to change the world. I was really pleased that Nicky finally saw something in the project to take her interest, and I, for one, am rooting for team Sacha, and hoping that his project will be a blinding success and lauded throughout the medical community, where Gaskell and Meena’s flashy project will crumble to dust and leave them empty husks... (sorry, Roxanna. It’s taken quite a while, but you are growing on me, and I wish you weren’t involved with the Gaskell debacle).
Final thoughts: bring back Jac. don’t keep Sydney around for too many episodes, and give Sacha a break for once!

“Stoneleigh Terrace II - Whittington Estate”, London, N19 [1973-1978] _ Architect: Peter Tábori _ Photographs by Spyros Kaprinis [18.09.2021]
“The Metropolitan Boroughs of St. Pancras, Holborn and Hampstead merged to become Camden in 1965. Under the stewardship of Sydney Cook, the new borough quickly became renowned for its radical housing.
Cook appointed a ‘dream team’ of architects working out of Holborn Town Hall, led by Neave Brown. These included Peter Tábori, who was born in Hungary in 1942 and studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic. When he was a student, he asked the local authority for a diploma project and was given the brief for Highgate New Town (Whittington Estate).
After working for Ernö Goldfinger and Denys Lasdun, Tabori joined Camden Architects Department – Sydney Cook had been so impressed by Tábori’s student work that he was employed to develop it into the final scheme. The estate was built between 1973 and 1978 overlooking the cemetery. It comprises six terraces with strong horizontal lines of balconies and cornices and vertical cross walls. Between each terrace is a pedestrian walkway, with trees and shrubs to soften the architecture.
One of the key figures in the development of Camden Council’s ‘golden age’ of progressive social-housing in the 1970s, Peter Tábori is best known for his distinctive ziggurat-style estates.
Born in Hungary in 1942, Tábori moved to London to study at the Regent Street Polytechnic. As a student, Tábori asked the local authority for a diploma project and was given the brief for Highgate New Town. After working for Ernö Goldfinger and Denys Lasdun, Tábori joined Camden Architects Department – the borough architect Sydney Cook had been so impressed by Tábori’s student work that he was employed to develop it into the final scheme.
Tábori ’s designs developed Neave Brown’s principles of estate housing which centred around individual front doors and private open spaces, resulting in the distinctive stepped apartments which can be seen on the Whittington Estate and at Oakshott Court in Somers Town.”

all of these are 70s pop and tbh all of them fucking bangers
21. three songs of your childhood
un-break my heart - toni braxton (i was recently reminded that bb me was like obsessed with this song to the point of impromptu sing-along concerts...like of all songs...who even was i back then. still a banger though)
the mummer’s dance - loreena mckennitt (i have a weird distinct but also super vague memory of hearing this over the radio a lot when i was very young being driven to school and i have no idea if it’s real but it’s the only reason i ever even remembered this song)
stop - spice girls (duh. actually have another distinct memory of singing and dancing to it with a friend on the bus to school from like grade 1)
30. three songs you really want your followers to know (for reasons other than all those above)
live with me - massive attack (the bass line...the strings...the yearning....the voice)
