I am actually dying for Here We Are content. Like, what's the entire plot? I know it's about a dinner party and them being unae to leave. I heard there are no songs in Act 2. Why are some of the characters missing in that backlight shot in the promo photos?

321 - Ben is Back

Guess who's back in the house?! We finally close the loop on the 2018 troubled son trifecta of films with Ben is Back, a grim Christmas tale of a family in the throws of addiction recovery. Lucas Hedges stars as the titular Ben, who returns home from a recovery center for the holiday, and against the advice of his sponsor. Ben's presence is somewhat unwelcome, even with the complicated feelings of his doting mother (played by Julia Roberts), and it's not long before the demons of his addiction come to haunt. The film lingered just outside of predictions in a competitive year before an unceremonious and short-lived December release.

This episode, we talk about the film's portrait of the opioid crisis and the career of writer/director Peter Hedges. We also talk about the 2018 Best Actress race, the film's very quiet TIFF premiere, and the unfulfilled potential of the August: Osage County adaptation.

Barisi fans,

I feel I've read enough Barisi fanfics at this point to confidently say: We sleep on Rachel Bay Jones way too much.

I've read many a fic with Rafael singing as we know Raúl sings like an angel. Alright, we purposefully pull Rafael out of his shell to sing. Occasionally with the Carisis present.

But guys. Fam. Y'all. The Carisis already got a beautiful voice who should be singing. Teresa Carisi. Aka Rachel Bay Jones! Where's my DEH + Mia fic? She plays a single mother whose teenage only-child tells a lie that fucking spirals out of control, roping in more and more people and, to an extent, the media, resulting in more people getting hurt and them themselves getting hurt in the process. TWICE. Give me Teresa singing So Big / So Small.

But my point wasn't Mia. My point is give me Barba-Carisi family gatherings and someone, maybe Tommy, got the great idea to rent a karaoke machine. Lucia and Sonny pressure Rafi into singing. Then later Bella, Sonny, Gina, and Mia do the same to Teresa. Everyone realizes they both sound amazing. Duet! Duet! Duet!
