Begaben uns gleich in eine weitere Brutalismus-Perle-Wohnsiedlung, ins Barbican nämlich, wo sie aber nun endlich mal etwas heiteres und bewährtes spielen, Kiss Me Kate nämlich, Cole Porters für seine außergewöhnliche Geschlossenheit von Raum und Zeit berühmte Musicalfassung von Shakespeares beliebter Häusliche-Gewalt-Komödie The Taming of the Screw. Diesmal sogar mit einer kleinen Entschuldigung für die häusliche Gewalt, schließlich schreibt man das Jahr 1948. Hat, der Schauplatz ist ja ein ganzes Theater, auch ein sehr großes Bühnenbild, bietet den liebreizenden Charlie Stemp, der diesmal auch kam und wirklich sehr schön tanzt, Stephanie J. Block, legendäre Mutter bei den Falsettos und den die Howard-Keel/Brent-Barrett-Barihunk-Erwartungen irgendwie überhaupt nicht erfüllenden Adrian Dunbar (er drückt sich auch vor "Were Thine That Special Face"), der aber als ausgebuffter Schauspieler, der er ist, prima einen ausgebufften Schauspieler, der sich durchschummelt daraus macht. Ist ok. Es ist wie immer aller sehr anzüglich, vergnüglich und viel zu heiß.

In case you were wondering, Stephanie J. Block is absolutely aware of what it means when the gays on twitter call her "mother" and she's basking in the glory of it all. Her solo concert at the 92NY was a tribute to the mothers in her life, and her own motherhood. We all know this woman can sing the house down any day of the week, but my, oh, my, can she talk as well. I thought the last solo concert of hers I went to was personal, but this one blew that out of the water. A wonderful evening with gorgeous numbers like "Being Alive," "What Is It About Her?" and "I'm Breaking Down."

My conspiracy theory is that one of the reasons they fired Stephanie J. Block for the role of Elphaba in 2000 and replaced her with Idina Menzel at the end of the OBC workshops is because SJB played the role SO gay that it was quickly crossing the line of plausible deniability. Like she doesn't seem to be able to help herself.

And thank god she eventually got to play the role on Broadway (arguably one of the best - if not THE best - actresses who ever did), because we finally got to see her get super fucking handsy and stare lovingly into Glinda's eyes inches away from her face for three hours:

Plus I cannot emphasize enough just how effective and moving this particular version of For Good is. Straight up feels like wedding vows.

(Ironically, she also has the best chemistry with Fiyero's character, and arguably the very sweetest performance of As Long As You're Mine in the entire slime tutorial universe.* So I'm just reading this as a Thropple Truther performance.)

*But that's just because she was (and still is) literally married to him. So they get uh. A little carried away in their performance. *cut to Sebastian Arcelus holding lantern up, his face covered in green makeup from aggressively making out with his wife on stage for several minutes* Apparently the makeup team HATED that song for them.
