Punctum Project, installment 4
(what the heck is the Punctum Project? read me!)
July 1 2005 - Chicago Ana Gasteyer, Kate Reinders, Kristoffer Cusick
What:
Tumblr media
"Gold hair with a gentle curl... that's the girl he chose. And heaven knows—I'm not that girl."
How come:
Ana's "I'm Not That Girl" was the first one to completely break my heart. It's so clear from how she performs it that it's not just about this one instance, this one guy-- she's so sure she will NEVER find that kind of love and it's written on every line and angle of her face. she'll never be anyone's first choice, she'll never be anyone's choice at all, and she HAS to know better by now than to wish any different if she wants to have a chance to survive the disappointment.
That sad, resigned little nod she does after "that's the girl he chose" like she's trying to buck up and be brave about it is beaten only by the way she sings "and heaven knows" through audible tears making a lump in her throat which sadly cannot be captured in gif form
but you'll just have to believe me that it's devastating

More photos from the Metropolitan Opera’s Gala Opening Night: Jonathan with director Michael Mayer, Ana Gasteyer, casting director Jim Carnahan and Camryn Manheim. Photos from Vogue, New York Times, Camryn and Last Night at the Met.
From the New York Times:
Later, at intermission, when a surprising number of people took their chances in the crowded room with teetering martinis, Mr. Mayer shared a kiss with Jonathan Groff, the reigning Tony Award winner for best actor in a musical.
From Ana Gasteyer’s Instagram:
So cool to be among so many makers and doers (and always love to see my #ANewBrain son and pal #Groffsauce)…

Not me watching something called "The Ultimate Gift Wrapping Challenge" solely because Ana Gasteyer was the celebrity judge.

"Have you ever walked up to people and realized they were just talking about you? Have you ever had it happen sixty times in a row? I have."

SNL alum Ana Gasteyer is back on Broadway, starring as the delightfully malevolent and overbearing Queen Aggravain in Once Upon a Mattress at the Hudson Theatre, through November 30. Playbill recently headed backstage for a tour of her dressing room, which is just offstage in the Hudson stage's left wing.
Gasteyer says the goal was to achieve a regal vibe worthy of her Queen Aggravain, while picking soothing colors that help the stage and screen favorite zen out before performances—in fact, the paint color on the walls is literally called "Calm." As it turned out, there's a history for that feeling in the space, something Gasteyer is very attuned to. "I love the vibes, the history of a room," she says. "There's something so special about that."
The room's last tenant was Merrily We Roll Along Tony winner Jonathan Groff, who also co-starred with Gasteyer in A New Brain at New York City Center in 2015. "I called Groff Sauce and I was like, 'Hey, I think I have your dressing room.' Groff was like, 'Oh, it's such a good dressing room. You're gonna love it. I meditated for hours and hours in there."
