To SAOA:
What the fuck. what the everliving fuck. I am literally sobbing I cannot stop this - this was the funny series! You can't do this to me!
Like just ughhhhhhhh - Suguha and Kazuto becoming unaligned for just a moment, just a second of him going faster, farther than her - and her sticking in out! Trying so hard to reach out! And him not doing the same because he doesn't even notice, and that abandonment twisting under years and years and years, of feeling unwanted and unloved, and feeling safer when she's unbearable, because she cannot afford that vulnerability again. And then Kirito coming back, older and wiser and more willing to spend time on the people he loves because of SAO where he got so close to losing them, and her not being able to fix these two versions of him together because they aren't! They aren't the same person! But he can't tell her, can't show her how he's changed because she cannot let either one of them be soft around one another.
And from Kirito's side, all he sees is his relationship with his baby sister grow strained under the weight of years, of her slowly turning into something awful that he thinks hates him, because what else could there be? Literally what else?
And her still dragging him to the kendo mat years later, despite the fact that he hates it. That being literally the first scene of them together.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

KLTCH!  The sound of metal piercing flesh resonated through his ears, a smile split across his lips as his eyes peered through his daunting mask.
Finally!  FINALLY THE DAY HAD COME!  He’d finally brought an end to Sienna Khan’s reign, the woman always having been unfit to rule the White Fang.  At this point, he would have started monologuing, praising himself for being a true Faunus, a prime alpha of their species.
Except, to his surprise, life still remained in her eyes.  He flinched, feeling a hand upon his shoulder.
“Hah.  Giving your final breath?  Your last words?”  He mocked her, expecting her to curse him, a tingling feeling forming on the back of his neck as he prepared to savor every moment.
Yet the words to come out of her mouth were not what he expected.
The woman whispered into his ear, “Enjoy this while you can.”  There was a subtle hint of joy lacing her voice, “It’s the deepest you’ll ever be inside a woman.”
His eyes widened, his words stuck in his throat.  Before he could respond with a whippy comeback, the last of her life force perished, leaving him standing there, alone... frustrated.
“Yeah well, you’re dead sooooo...”  He paused, as there was no one around to hear him, “DAMN IT!”  He cried into the high heavens, feeling as if he had wan the war, but lost a decisive battle.
Poor, little Adam.

Obey Me! Random Headcanon #7
The Brothers' Favorite Anime
Lucifer
Well-Known - SPY X FAMILY; he thinks it's cute and appreciates the sentiment of being able to live in a happy family despite the secrets hidden away. For obvious reasons, he relates to Loid the most.
More Obscure - THE CASE STUDY OF VANITAS; he likes the portrayal of vampires and likes to compare it to Bram Stoker's Dracula. His favorite character is Dominique de Sade, whom he refers to as "tragic and feisty."
Mammon
Well-Known - ONE PIECE; he's just one of those people that loves to scream "THE ONE PIECE IS REAAAALLLL" and likes the treasure-hunting aspect combined with the camaraderie.
More Obscure - BLUE EXORCIST; funny, right? He used to mock Satan every time his name popped up until the couch was destroyed. He thinks Rin is cool and argues with Lucifer all the time that he's better than Yukio.
Leviathan
Well-Known - SWORD ART ONLINE; Levi likes the concept more than the characters if he's honest, but he thinks Heathcliff is a total boss.
More Obscure - THE EMINENCE IN SHADOW; like many people who watch Isekai, Levi thinks the tropes start to get a little too copy-and-paste after a while, and he appreciates the parody. He loves Cid and goes into great detail to explain why the anime is genius.
Honorable mention - SAO ABRIDGED because Levi also loves it 10x more than the original even if it's fan-made.
Satan
Well-known - BLACK BUTLER; A revenge plot mixed up with detective stories and a cruel demon butler that loves cats? He vibes with Sebastian and would like him *just a little more* if Levi hadn't pointed out that he looks like Lucifer.
More Obscure - MORIARTY THE PATRIOT; it's Sherlock but anime; what more could he ask for? When asked who his favorite character is, he usually can't decide between the Moriarty's because he likes all of them for different reasons and usually says William by default.
Asmodeus
Well-Known - INUYASHA; Loves it for the romance and thinks Inuyasha and Kagome make a great couple. He even likes the "Inuyasha... Kagome... Inuyasha! ... Kagome!" moments.
More Obscure - KAGUYA-SAMA LOVE IS WAR; Wants to kiss half of the cast because they're beautiful and will sometimes yell at the screen when Shinomiya and Shirogane misunderstand each other (he ships it hard).
Beelzebub
Well-Known - VIOLET EVERGARDEN; he cries every single time, but he loves it because Violet reminds him of Lilith, and he likes how it has a hopeful ending.
More Obscure - FOOD WARS!; It's literally a cooking show, and he couldn't be happier. The fanservice often goes over his head until one of his brothers mumbles something about it, at which point he might feel embarrassed.
Belphegor
Well-Known - JUJUTSU KAISEN; he likes it because it's more on the dark side; his favorite character is Mahito and has remarked at least once that he thinks it would be fun to carry humans in his pocket like that (he said this specifically to scare you).
More Obscure - MAOU-JOU DE OYASUMI; he loves this series because it's all about his favorite past-time. He often writes down what Princess Suyaris says, muttering "wow, I never thought about doing that..."

-- Caramel: I have watched a lot of anime. It was difficult to narrow down a list of more than 80 to 14, but I hope you enjoyed! --

i cant talk to anybody about this so i am SCREAMING this into the vpid
Tumblr media
So. The newest episode of the Sword Art Online Abridged series is out.
And I watched it.
And now I have to reevaluate my life
The VAs for Suguha and Kirito nailed that so hard its gonna be able to support a 3 story structure. Holy shit.
Especially LennonDrake as Suguha. What the fuuuuuck, that was so good.
The writing was so on point, the timing was perfect and I am just---
I guess I am just amazed?
Being usually subjected to lazy jokes and subpar writing that tries to outsmart the watcher to pull a "wow you didnt see that coming huh?!" moment, no matter how stupid and unreasonable it is, and moments of characters being aweful to each other for a really bad punchline that isnt even funny but just cruel, i didnt expect a parody like that to... Be so well written. Yeah they already hit it out of the park with the first season but even there they kept it mostly lighthearted and slightly cynical. And this time they just... Didnt. And for the better of it.
I grew up an only child. But from some point in my life i gained something like a sister in my cousine after her mother died and she just stayed with us. And i always wished we could be closer and understand each other better. I felt often like i was alone because she couldnt understand that my depression makes me incapable of functioning like a normal person. And at some point I had to face that I longed for something that just wasnt reality.
Watching Suguha and Kirito have this confrontation where both dont really understand each other and finally clash, because they... Wish to be siblings but drifted apart with resentment in their hearts-- Man that hit home.
I mean I KNEW the series had solid writing. And i knew they were building up to it but I guess i didnt expect THIS level of quality. The dialogue was heartfelt and real the exposition through it was absolutely organic, the Voice Actor performance was brilliant-
Damn. Damn I... Gotta sit down.
Wow.

Do you have recommended reading/watching list for Understanding Kirito? I've only read like the first volume of the manga (*a* manga? It covered all of sword art online (the video game) I think, which seems short? It might have been an abridged (as in shortened, not a parody) version)
ok so, the mangas are adaptations of adaptations lol
you need the books. the light novels. i can point you to the pdfs
because no adaptation does it right, the aincrad arc is a *bunch of short stories* and they're not in chronological order. changing that, while also cutting out all of the internal monologue, ruins the pacing and the characterisation
so, genuinely, the novels
everything else is adaptation that varies between "fine i guess" and "downright insulting"
except the ordinal scale movie that one's an outlier adn should not be counted (like it's actually really good)

So...
Sword Art Online Abridged made me cry.
I was not expecting a web parody to induce that kind of reaction in me.
Honestly it's great when something that is supposed to be just comedy has some gutpunch moments. There's a reason I love reading @swearyshera

i have said this before but it bears repeating: the abridged parody of sword art online by something witty entertainment is 100x more compelling plot-wise than the actual anime. i will die on this hill

Top 10 Fictional characters and what dynamics are they?
From least to best liked:
10 - 9S (Nier Automata): Omega
Tumblr media
9 - Stiles (Teen Wolf): Omega
Tumblr media
8- Rum Tum Tugger (Cats the musical 1998): Alpha
Tumblr media
7 - Bruce Wayne (DC universe): Alpha
Tumblr media
6- Our!Ciel Phantomhive (Kuroshitsuji): Omega (I know some people make an argument for Alpha and I can kind of see it if I squint. But I just prefer Omega for him).
Tumblr media
5 - Azula (Avatar: The Last Airbender): Alpha
Tumblr media
4- He Tian (19 days): Alpha
Tumblr media
3 - Jin Guanyao (Mo Dao Zu Shi): Beta (I particularly like to write him as an Omega, but if I am being honest he's a Beta for sure).
Tumblr media
2 - Kirito (Sword Art Online Abridged): Beta
Tumblr media
And no.1 in my heart of hearts iiiiiis:
1 - Dick Grayson (DC universe): Omega
Tumblr media
What do you all think? Is it predictable? Is it surprising? Did you guys expect Betas of all people to be two of my top 3? Do you headcanon them to be differnt dynamics yourself?
I also think I got a pretty good mix in media styles. Anime/Donghua, Manhua, Musical, Games, Comics, Drama/Series, Cartoons and even parody.

Thank you for your recommendations. I am going to pirate the bunny girl one immediately in order to soothe the horrors. I'll probably take a look at dorohedoro one of these days.
For abridged series, i do think it is funny to continue to only watch parodies of things and not the original material but probably won't go for sword art online until I've seen at least 5 episodes of dragon ball z abridged. Spaceballs was good though, didn't need star wars for that.
Can you all please flood this post with anime recommendations. If they are extremely depraved you can send them to my ask box. Hentai too why not. Let's have a white Christmas. By which i mean like cum, don't cut out that interracial shit due to a silly misunderstanding.

So, I’ve been watching Sword Art Online: Abridged Parody, and...
I don’t think it’s terribly controversial to say that SAO Abridged has become the gold standard for what a good abridged series can do. While Team Four Star took 3 legendary IPs, Final Fantasy VII, Hellsing Ultimate, Dragon Ball Z are all generally considered to be fairly decent as stories. As much as people complain about DBZ’s random power ups, it’s not as if it was incoherent. Things make a decent amount of sense and that was the worst of the bunch.
Sword Art Online is notoriously problematic. No doubt I’m not the first person to say that. Plenty of people have said as much all over Tumblr and Youtube. In abridging SAO, Something Witty Entertainment managed to improve on what happened originally.
Now, I want to do something incredibly nerdy. (As if I haven’t done nerdy things on this blog before.) One of my favorite things about SAO Abridged is its insane sense of connections between episodes. Things are referenced that don’t matter until much later and jokes are often built on previous events long before the present episode. Two of the big plot points of the current arc are built on information we learned in a few previous episodes. I want to argue that episode 2 is the most important episode of the first arc because of its connections to every other episode in the arc.
To start, the narrator in the cold open connects this episode to the one before it by saying that a number of players died after being idiots. Notably some jumped into fire. If you remember, Klein struggled to kill a pig and named his avatar Ballsdeep69. In episode 2, this is shown in this episode in that players haven’t read the manual compiled by beta testers.
Though, it’s not as if that;s  the only reason they’d fail. In episode 3, the leader of the Black Cats took some of the tutorial NPCs from missions. Kayaba blames this as a factor in people failing miserably in the season finale. But we’ll get to him soon enough.
The intro plays and we’re in a meeting of players who are trying to beat a boss. The idea is that people will strategize to beat a boss by working together. This doesn’t pan out well throughout the series. Kirito is able to tank hits from seven lower level players in episode 4. In episode 5, the meeting to beat Sheeptar happens after 7 people. When they go after the meeting, 5 more died.
Now Kibaou makes his only appearance in the series. I don’t want to make too many “this character makes their debut here” connections. Asuna and Tiffany make their debut and are important characters in this series, but I’m not talking about them in this way. Kibaou is minor enough that I can mention him here. His stupid entrance makes his takeover of the Aincrad Liberation Front in episode 10 seem like a negative statement about them more than a positive one for him.
Though, episode 8 shows a bit of their incompetence on their own. While Corbax thinks his strategy of “group up and hit it till it dies” is revolutionary, it’s about as revolutionary as he is Hispanic. The strategy’s true origin is episode 2, as an alternative to Kirito’s “final solution”. That doesn’t work well and Kibaou starts to take power as a result of Corvax dying.
We then get Asuna’s troubles with menus. She’s not the only one with these issues, considering we learn Yoko has issues with the menu in episode 6. However, this is one of many clever ways to hint at Asuna’s ineptitude with the game early on. While she’s shown to have a lot of innate skill in this episode, that’s despite her inexperience. For all the changes made from the original, this was best shown in both versions by Asuna using her real name as her avatar name in the final episode of the arc.
Something I didn’t pick up on right away was that the setup for Laughing Coffin comes from episode 2. One player receives messages he believed to be from Jesus. At the end of the fight, he gets the command to kill them all and the end card is preluded with a creepy version of “Jesus Loves Me”. They come up in episodes 6 and 9. In episode 4, it comes up that other groups like Titan’s Hand have come up.
But the big thing that you see from this episode is a theme that runs through the first arc of this show. Kirito sees this game as an alternative to the real world. It would be easiest to make this the only real connection to this episode, but that would be lazy. (Clearly, this was written before I realized how crazy this “one post a day” idea was.)
Kirito mentions that he has power he didn’t in the real world in episode 1. While that may have felt like a throwaway line at the time. In episode 2, he uses that power to tell off the idiots around him, just like he wishes he could have done in real life. And to be honest, he might not be right about being able to solo the boss, but he’s definitely better than most everyone else in the boss room. Asuna might be on par with him skillwise, but he has more experience than her.
I almost called this section of connections “Kirito is better than those around him.ïżœïżœ While he’s not the strongest player in SAO, as we end up learning, he’s certainly better than most of the people he’s playing alongside. This ego serves as fuel for tagging with Silica in episode 4 under the supposed threat of Laughing Coffin. It’s why we get the formation of “The Kirito is Always Right Foundation” in episodes 5 and 6. It’s why he challenges Heathcliff in episodes 9 and 11.
But something happens.
In episode 3, he unwittingly joins a guild because he’s such an amazing player. However, that wasn’t enough to save his guild mates from dying. Sadly, he had just decided to open up to people and the ordeal closed him off to people and even emotions according to episode 4. In episodes 4, 5, 7, and 8 we get the sense that this event had a serious emotional impact on him.
However, through these events he learns to open up to people more. Going on missions and teaming up with othes, he starts to open up to people. This obviously leads to a relationship with Asuna and Yui original. As stupid as he still feels the people around him are, he still has respect for him.
In episode 2, he tells the people, “Shoot for the stars. It will make it more fun when I kick you back into the dirt.” In episode 8, we see a change in his epic rant, which happens to be my favorite moment in the series. On humans he says, “They are without question a complete write-off as a species. And how dare you make me care about them!” And when Kayaba goes on a similar rant to Kirito’s after his identity is revealed, Kirito plays defense for them, lukewarm as it is.
And wouldn’t you know? Kirito is told that he could have served as a leader and inspiration to the people in SAO because he is better than so many of them. Sure, Kayaba bring the idea up that same episode and a few episodes earlier in trying to recruit him for the Knights of the Blood Oath. However, the idea first came up in episode 2.
