It's a little surprising that the "Monday's child is fair of face" nursery rhyme never caught on as an arbitrary personality-assigner in the same way astrology did. It makes the same amount of sense.

I see a lot of discourse about the CaitVi Kinktober debacle that seems to completely miss what the problem is.
Is it proof fandoms are now puritan hellscapes? Not really, that's a weird assumption to make from one restrictive shipping event. People have been arguing about the morality of slash for literal decades.
Were the event runners wrong to want to host a specific event for a specific exploration of kink with caveats for what works they would promote? No. They can run whatever event they want, and those who want to participate can of their own volition.
The issue is that the event runners grossly misunderstood the space they were entering (Kinktober), tried to dictate absurdly diegetic rules that just don't make sense in the space they've entered OR the canon material they're writing for, made a lot of direct and indirect moral statements about the people who were originally in that space (kinksters and kink writers), then got mad when these people pointed and laughed.
It's not about the boundaries. It isn't morally right or morally wrong to have strong preferences for what kind of material you want in a shipping event. It is morally neutral to curate your own space.
It's about reading the fucking room when you enter another space. It's about using the right terminology and tags for what you're trying to create. The event could have easily been "CaitVi Smutober 2025", not "CaitVi Kinktober 2025".
That being said: Writing kink explicitly outside of the rules of the event and tagging the event + event runners on purpose to make a point is sexual harassment. Full stop. You can have your funny hahas without sending sexually explicit material to people who do not want to see it.

A lot of people hate to hear this, but they in particular really need to understand it.
If you were raised in the US, and you weren't specifically raised as a specific religion other than Christianity, then you are culturally Christian. Yes, even if you were raised atheist. Yes, I know you hate that idea. People who were raised in specific other religions in the US are usually still influenced by it, just not as thoroughly.
But specific Protestant values and attitudes have worked their way so far into US culture that we do not ever think about. (They've gotten into US Catholicism, too, Catholics elsewhere are frequently WTF at US Catholics, or so I'm told.) The "Protestant work ethic" is one of them, that "manager in your head" you should kill. Purity as a principle. The nobility of suffering (very Calvinist specifically). The prosperity culture (again, very Calvinist). A whole list. I'm honestly not good enough at Christian history to list it all. After all, I wasn't raised Christian myself. But I can see and acknowledge that I was raised in a culture with a Christian hegemony. If I pay attention, I can see where it's affected how I think. And when I do pay attention and look at it, I can change it. I can root out those patterns in my head. It's a lot of work, but it's well worth doing.
Denying that you are culturally Christian on the basis of your absence of Christian upbringing, or absence of Christianity now, just shows that you don't understand what cultural Christianity is. It is the culture that you have marinated in all your life, if you grew up in the US. The same way you've marinated in racism, classism, sexism, right on down the line (and generally they are all one thing). All of that affects you, and the only way to fix it is to acknowledge it and work on it.
This isn't a "hot take". It's just a fucking fact.
I'm posting at 10:30pm US Pacific time on a Sunday night, and fucking nobody is going to see this. Or reblog it. But I feel better having said it.

One criticism I do have of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is that Alan Moore kinda portrays the foreign / non-English characters as even more backward than the Victorian era white people.
Tumblr media
And it's just kinda weird to have that attitude when writing a Sikh character specifically, considering the history of Sikhism and sexism in India, is the thing. I'm not saying a sexist Sikh isn't a thing that exists. I'm also not saying that Nemo should be a flawless theologically pure late 1800s Sikh, especially considering Nemo has been isolated and is possibly oblivious to cultural reformations like the Singh Sabha Movement, but like
like it's just weird to put a Sikh on the page as a more sexist sexist than a white English sexist in the late 1800s, right?
Especially in a work that thoroughly otherizes Asian characters already via its choice of villains, in a way that you kinda have to suck your teeth and insist is somehow a satire of Sinophobic attitudes in the Victorian era.

When I talk about how contemporary American neurodeterminist cultural attitudes are new, how they came about within my adult lifetime, how for the overwhelming bulk of human societies around the globe and throughout history they would have been considered ridiculous...
My point is literally never. Ever. Ever. "Retvrn to a better time."
I am not saying that other times/places/cultural norms about young people and neurodivergent people were ever BETTER.
I am saying that contemporary American attitudes are presented as objective, biological neurological reality, and they simply are not.
When I say "In 1950, a 25-year-old mother sending her 6-year-old child on an errand by himself would have been the most unremarkable thing in the world," I am not saying "Child-rearing and family life were better overall in 1950 than in 2025" because that is transparently false. That kid probably went to a segregated school and got polio. Everything was terrible.
What I am saying is "The fact that the abilities of a 6-year-old errand-runner or a 19-year-old new parent were assumed sufficient in a different cultural context is irrefutable proof that those presumed inabilities in our current culture are not in fact Biological Truths."

Something really ironic about Steph’s obsessive concern over her potential similarity to Arthur, her certainty that this is how she is viewed by everyone she meets, that constant comparison she does, alongside the fact that Steph is actually very similar to Crystal in a lot of ways and it’s something she never really comments on at all.

After years of seeing that king in situations in ads for that royal match game I was like fine let’s see if that game does in fact let you save an idiot king from drowning
And as I suspected, it doesn’t. It’s just a shape match game. You don’t even get to see royalty be in danger above a pit of lava.
