I have this exact book: Ghosts, Monsters, and Demons of India by: Rakesh Khanna & J. Furcifer Bhairav for those curious. And yes, sometimes some stories like these exist because of other cultures creating/attributing myths to other places.
Few famous examples: Griffins and the Indus Valley Worm
So Griffins and the Indus Valley Worm are creatures thought to have existed in India by Greek philosophers and scientists of the time. They made up the creatures but believed their origins to be "far exotic and from/to the east" a lot of storytelling has worked this way.
The Three Princes of Serendip (old name for Ceylon/Sri Lanka) is the first story of Serendipity (where we get the word btw) of just fun adventures (slice of life) about three Sri Lankan Princes. Only, it's not Sri Lankan in origin. It's Persian made up for entertainment ABOUT Sri Lanka.
Copy of the book for those interested:

It's a brilliant collection btw.

Tomarang
Lanjutan dari postingan Tomarang berikutnya. Berhubung saya sendiri masih capek pulang kerja di dunia nyata, jadi saya review singkat, padat, dan jelas saja ya.
The Sims 4 studio team who did research for For Rent EP definitely taking many references from Thailand and Malaysia.
Boat = Thailand.
Colourful diamond-shaped lanterns hanging on cafe = Vietnam. (It's not Chinese lantern, very different).
Tumblr media
Gazebo Rooftop = Thailand.
Squat toilet = universal Southeast Asian "traditional" toilet. Actual Southeast Asian style throw the water using Gayung as water container to the toilet to flush the toilet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Painting on The Screaming Gecko cafe, there is image of temple. It is Thai temple. Wat Phra Kaew.
NASI LEMAK, the famous national Malaysian dish, Finally EA updated the correct mesh. And adding Coconut Rice to the menu which is not accurate.
There is no such thing as "Coconut Rice" in Southeast Asian cuisine. I asked fellow Indonesian Sims player and real life people from Indonesia and Malaysia... They are confused and don't know what is "Coconut Rice."
Apologize from EA accepted. So far the complaint via Malaysian youtube influencer worked. The only interesting about this Nasi Lemak 3D model is the texture. Too realistic for The Sims 4 food. As it is more suitable for The Sims 3 food texture without looking too cartoon. I can easily recognize nasi, ikan teri, ayam, sambal, ketimun, kacang, dan telur.
Tumblr media
Painting on cafe wall. Beer and... Tiger? What's EA trying to say... Is it Tiger Beer? Beer from Singapore?
Tiger Statue. In Indonesia, there are many Tiger statues displayed on the public street and in front of military building. There was "Cisewu Tiger Statue." from Indonesia became viral on internet, due to its funny-looking tiger statue looks like laughing.
Tumblr media
Thailand Dragon fountain statue. Yes, dragon in Southeast Asia is depicted as water serpent creature. The color is right, Green and gold. Definitely not eyesore in red colour like The Sims 3 Shang Simla Chinese dragon statue.
Dragons have long symbolized power, creativity, heaven, and good fortune. Thai culture also believes that dragons have authority over bodies of water, rain, floods, and storms.
Tumblr media
Wet Market = universal Southeast Asian market. There are always fresh fish, seafood, and chicken sold on the market stall.

No amount of “let’s make the next Avatar Indian not because we care, but have to check them off a list” in a team full of white and East Asian people who continue to work on a franchise that depends on exploiting Indian culture and people for the foundation of their franchise, won’t fix the awful racism and extremely hurtful damage both groups have done towards Indians and other South Asians.
East Asians who stayed quiet on a show where they appropriated and misrepresented Indian culture centered around a Hindu sacred concept call “Avatar”. Profited of racism and colorism and knew very well the concept of an Avatar is not from their culture, but made themselves look like victims because white people and other poc find them more platable.
And they still continue do to so while Indians “are the evil dirty brown people” who are taking away representation when it was THEM who have done it on multiple occasions, not just ATLA.
Crazy how this entire time East Asians have managed to escape accountability because of how much people infantilize them. Screaming racism and misrepresentation, but only in a way that convenient for themselves, even thought ATLA is built of misrepresentation of Indian culture.
Funny how when East Asians made the Netflix ATLA and made it more orientalist and merged Indians with MENA people they get shielded from criticism and their community conveniently stayed quiet. And ofc a Filipino playing the leading character representing an Hindu concept over an actual Indian was not problematic at because in the Asian community double standards never apply to East or SEA people.
East AND Southeast Asian people have been by far THE most racist people towards Indians in the ATLA fanbase. You even dare speak on the misrepresentation and appropriation they start throwing racial slurs at you. There’s always been a certain level of entitlement they’ve had over our own cultures just like the white people they claim about while screaming how we’re “Not really Asian”. Zero self awareness. Both groups have benefitted of our erasure and not a single one them has openly held their communities accountable.
ATLA is fully of profiting of Indian religions, mythology, philosophy, spirituality and yet not a single person who looks like me, but where supposed to be quiet because, “Don’t East & SEA deserve representation too 🥹🥹🥹” ya’ll or so manipulative and comfortable walking a over us. Only if you guys can get representation at the expense of racism and cultural appropriation of Indian people, is it actually okay.
A show that literally built itself of stealing from Hindu mythology for its story, but it’s East Asians who shamelessly take credit for it and the main character is a….Tibetan misrepresenting a Hindu concept????
If you look online not a single East Asian is able to tell you the lore behind the “Avatar” because it’s not there culture it’s always an Indian person and yet…this entire time they’ve managed to take credit for my culture because people find them more digestible in Indian culture over actual Indians.
East Asians know their guilty that’s why their checking off “Indian Avatar” off the list and yet they’ ve managed to avoid accountability and apologizing for the harm they still continue to do while profiting of my culture for their benefit.
East Asians could easily speak out about this because they’ve had no problems doing it before when they were selectively caring about racism, orientalism and cultural appropriation (but only if it benefits them). I don’t want East Asians touching my culture. ATLA already used our mythology for Aang and they got credit for it.
If they really cared they would stop making this franchise that continues to credit and overrepresent East Asians in my culture. If they really cared they would have corrected the originally tv series that steals from Hindu mythology and has no business being represented by someone who’s Tibetan.
I’m sick of how much East Asians have managed to paint themselves as victims and the fandom refusing to hold them accountable.
There is not amount of Indian representation that could fix how awfully offensive and hurtful this franchise has been to Indians. The intentions from the East Asian and white development team in creating an Indian Avatar is incredibly disingenuous and not sincere at all.
I don’t want East Asians touching and profiting off my culture while they managed to demonize Indians for almost two decades and hid behind infantilization knowing very well Indian culture isn’t their’s.
I’m sick of this awful racist fandom not holding them accountable. Crazy how much you can get away with when you are lighter skinned and your culture is more palatable.
Ya’ll worship this franchise, but hate the group who people whose culture this show depends on.
Stay away from Indian culture.

Florence Finch
Florence Finch was born in 1915 in Santiago, Philippines. During World War II, Finch was involved with the Philippine resistance. While working for the Japanese-controlled Philippine Liquid Fuel Distribution Union, she diverted an estimated 250 gallons of fuel each week to the resistance. Finch also smuggled food and medicine to Allied prisoners of war. In 1944, the Japanese arrested her. Finch was interrogated, beaten, and tortured, and by the time her prison camp was liberated, she weighed only 80 pounds. She later moved to New York and enlisted in the Coast Guard Women's Reserve. When Finch's work during the war was discovered by her superiors, she became the first woman to receive the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon.
Florence Finch died in 2016 at the age of 101.
