So I have a new Table Top RPG that I backed on kickstarter that I want to run called Slash! Which calls itself the Horror Movie Roleplaying Game. It can have from 1 player to 5+ players. It can have anywhere from 1 session (2-5hrs) to 3+ Sessions (10+hrs). There's 3 acts where your character gets to choose abilities and reroll for luck as well as have character growth, which is where sometimes your traits change to more represent how you play the character. Like Act 1 you start as headstrong and brave, but instead of barging in head first in situations, you have your character sneak and hide, then Act 2 you might instead get practical or cowardly as a trait to replace headstrong and/or brave. I think it's really cool. I have two ideas/campaigns I'm thinking of running and I'm looking for players. I don't know how I want to set up or what to use for an application if anyone wants to join so if anyone has any suggestions that's be appreciated. It'd simply be an application asking for age, name, pronouns, what you are comfortable and not comfortable with in horror, and if you are okay with like LGBTQ+ themes if they come up. It is a horror game so like certain themes like death and phobias and gore will probably come up, but depending on peoples thoughts and feelings about certain topics I can easily gloss over details that might gross people out or make them uncomfortable. I also have somethings myself that I won't have happen in the game because I personally don't like certain topics or horror tropes kind of deal. It's one of those things if I do this we'll have a session 0 to discuss this stuff, lay down boundries, and also figure out the relationship web, and decide what game idea everyone wants to run. Me and my froend Stacie literally came up with a trilogy for a horror movie frenchise we thought would be cool called the The Seamstress. The other one would be your typical slasher like film with some of my OCs I have created for a horror movie like comic I want to make. They each have different settings and stories that I hope some people will find fun and kind of scary. Anyways, if anyone would be interested in signing up let me know. I'll figure out what to do for an application. We'd be using Roll20 most likely for running the game. Also if people wanted I could make a Discord server so people could chat and show off art of their characters and the such. Also I could write notes for everyone after each session where they won't get lost too.

Act Three!
It’s Gay Christmas aka Halloween! Join the Roll for Focus team as they play the classic horror movie-themed system Slash! by Samuel Clark.
Pushed to their limit, the remaining friends are ready to fight back in any way they can. Unfortunately for them, the demon isn’t concerned about windchime weapons and salt-filled pomade. In fact, he’s confident enough to even offer a tempting deal. What he doesn’t know is an old enemy has been lying in wait for the perfect opportunity from beyond the grave. A miraculous return might just be the key to the friends’ success and Aruelion’s downfall if they can hang on long enough to defy horror movie expectations.
Content Warnings: explicit language, references to sexual relationships/situations, descriptions of gore and violence, mental manipulation, death, demonic possession, hallucinations

every 3rd or 4th TTRPG youtuber: it's so ANNOYING when our collaborative STORYTELLING game gets interrupted with COMBAT! we just want this part to move as quickly as possible so we can get back to our STORY
why
the fuck
are you acting like combat in a TTRPG (just like in a video game, or a book, or a film) cannot and should not be PART OF THE STORY
if you don't want to play a combat-focused TTRPG that is fine and you should absolutely do that! in fact, if you think combat is getting in the way of what you want to be doing then YEAH, PLEASE do that
but if occasional eruptions into violence are something you want, it is incumbent upon both GM (in encounter design) and player (in how and when they choose to engage with combat) to continue to tell story during initiative
this can (should!) work even for "random" encounters - these goblin bandits, for example, may have nothing to do with the lich you're trying to find, but they should at least tell us something about the world they and you inhabit - why have they turned to banditry? what valuables are they most interested in lifting? how ready are they to kill when you refuse to hand over your valuables? how well equipped are they? how far are we from the nearest center of authority?
#ttrpg#dnd#pathfinder#“every 3rd or 4th” is absolutely an exaggeration#but I run into disdain for combat slash dichotomy between combat and story way more often than i'd like

I'm restraining myself so hard from gushing all about my players in a campaign that hasn't even started yet because all of their character ideas are so good
#we've got a short enby vampire who's a mr darcy type#a wisecracking werewolf girl who's shouldering the weight of family expectations#a genderfluid yokai-slash-eldritch-horror who's masquerading as a perfectly normal person and only slightly failing#a mischievous femme witch who's in a coven that's basically a mafia#and a demonic drama king#dnd characters#ttrpg

turns out there's a stunningly lightweight behavioural intervention for unwanted habitual skin picking / excoriation disorder / dermatillomania! (also other body-focused repetitive behaviours; originally designed for management of tourette's) this i think should be doable even without a therapist, although having someone else helps and may be crucial for some.
habit reversal training (HRT (lol))
the basic idea is increasing your awareness of the habit- the movements of which it consists, the situations in which it occurs or is triggered*, the warning signs or early motions, that you're doing it at all if it's more unconscious for you - and then, when you start to do it, replacing it with an action that makes the original impossible to do (called a competing response.)
ideally this replacement action is inconspicuous, can be done anywhere, and can be held or continued for 1-3 minutes, or until the urge to complete the original habit fades. a competing response for skin picking might be clenching the fist. for lip chewing i have decided to perform exercises meant for TMJ which involve opening the mouth. you could also substitute chewing gum.
competing responses for skin picking, hair pulling, finger biting, etc might be clenching the hand into a fist, or grabbing hold of something like a stress ball. for lip or teeth biting, lightly clenching the teeth; i think opening the mouth as in exercises for treatment of TMJ could also work, though this is more conspicuous and so not ideal.
there are other aspects to HRT, such as social support, but awareness and competing response training are the core.
i won't attempt to assess the current evidence for this treatment's efficacy. i just think it seems very worth trying, provided you are gentle and nonjudgmental with yourself.
-* which of course provide another angle from which to tackle this: reducing triggering situations and stimuli. this may mean application relaxation techniques (i know, i know) during stressful situations or the old who-hasn't-tried-this covering/physical barring of the targeted area (like bandaids on the fingertips to prevent biting.)
couple of accessible sources:
#medposting#dermatillomania#realizing i described this as one would a ttrpg or game engine slash framework. lightweight#hoping im not somehow being an asshole in the derm tag but i didnt see this anywhere#and this is certainly a revelation for me#behaviourism is good sometimes

I knew pretty early on when starting the Oracle that I wanted a martial subclass. Oracles are generally relegated to the backline in combat, using their abilities to get information that will help the rest of the party be more efficient, but people always seem to like martial classes for casters and I figured there was opportunity here as well.
The solution was fairly obvious; an Oracle subclass that specializes in getting a lot of detail about the immediate future, so that they can engage foes in combat with a high degree of effectiveness. The subclass is called the Battlemind, btw.
However, I once again ran into the issue of 5e not handling divination very well, because there are existing effects that have virtually the same flavor. For instance, the Foresight spell:
This is a 9th level spell that has effectively the same net effect, it makes the target very good at fighting, but it does so in a boring (albeit powerful) way.
Foresight might be fun to experience for a session or two at the end of a long running campaign, but it doesn't make for a good mechanical basis for a character.
My main issue with taking this kind of approach to the Battlemind is that it wouldn't be very fun to play; you'd just be a Fighter but with big bonuses to your rolls instead of any of the fun stuff (action surge, fighting styles, maybe maneuvers, etc).
So maybe there could be a different way? What if instead of granting the character a massive statistical advantage and labeling it as precognition, we gave the PLAYER information about the future and can use it to navigate the fight better?
Two Steps Ahead is essentially a permanent Auspice effect, which I discussed in a previous post. Basically, you know what your next two attack rolls are going to be, but if they are bad, you can still find some source of advantage to mitigate that.
Then, two levels later, you get Warrior of Fate. This has some cool new ways to use your resources, but the thing I want to focus on right now is the third point. You can force attackers to use the rolls from your Two Steps Ahead feature. That means you now have a use for the bad rolls as well as the good ones.
I haven't gotten the chance to playtest this subclass yet, but it really excites me. I want this martial to FEEL totally different, because the way you see the fight is so altered. Your go-to actions on each turn aren't the same anymore. Rather than just attacking the closest thing and hoping you hit, you already know whether that will work out. If you have high rolls on deck, maybe you walk over to a key target and take it out. If you have low rolls, maybe you do something else with your turn then watch enemies flounder as you use Warrior of Fate to make them use those numbers for their own attacks.
The key difference between Two Steps Ahead and Foresight is that now you have to play smart. You have to actually USE the information you have about the future, and adapt as new information comes in, rather than just sitting back to coast along on a statistical advantage. You could choose to play a Battlemind and totally ignore Two Steps Ahead, only looking at the results there when the time comes to use them, which I think makes it a much better approximation of having powers of precognition.
Unfortunately, part of the fantasy of characters like this is that they could land every blow and avoid every hit, but the math of 5e just isn't built for that. I could give you a ridiculous AC and attack bonus to make it happen, but again there's no fun in that. However, with a little luck and a bit of skill, I think you could get very close to a "flawless" performance in combat.
#it should be clear by this point that the Oracle won't be the easiest class to play#it will probably take a good understanding of the system and a mind for strategy#so if what you want is to hack and slash or blast things with fireball#this probably isn't the class for you#not all the subclasses will be this crazy though#most will be easier to pilot I think#I hope#dnd#dnd5e#dnd homebrew#d&d#d&d 5th edition#d&d homebrew#homebrew#ttrpg#sunbear games#oracle class#oracle#precognition#contessa

I keep watching these dnd yt shorts and it's making me want to get into the game but I looked at the online handbook the other day and it made my head spin so fast
#so that's why I'm figuring out how to write my OWN ttrpg and then I'll play with people and it'll be fun#slash half joking#it's at least new daydream fodder

and like half of the time they don't even read the rules! there's a reason content about dnd rules is so big, no one has read them. the dm for the 5e campaign I'm in has never touched a 5e book, just going off of dm experience from other systems. also, the momets you play raw 5e, someone on the table will be like "oh you're not using *this* popular homebrew?" like sorry I haven't watched critical role season 5 episode 327
im confused about the dnd 5e hatred. yall arent just ignoring rules that are dumb? ur dm actually follows every single thing in the book for real?
if you have to ignore some of the rules for the game to be good then the game is not good
#ttrpg#5e people read another book slash play another system please#I swear other rulebooks are actually well written and fun to read
