Normally I’m a huge fan of people leaving reviews and comments on things. Really I am!
HOWEVER. If you are listening to an audiobook narrated by a feminine voice or has a female main somewhere, I am BEGGING you. If your comment is “omg I loved the main male MC but the female mc is SO ANNOYING” or “great plot but the narrators voice is SO SHRILL AND ANNOYING” honestly? Don’t post that. Please examine your internalized misogyny. I certainly had to when I was younger and I still have spots that come up.
And if you must comment negatively, consider helpful reviews such as: “the narrator mumbles and is hard to understand” or “their attempt at a British accent is not very good” or “the sound quality is horrible and the plosives blow my ears out. This sounds unedited”.
Specificity of experience is what makes reviews valuable. Saying “people with feminine voices are shrill and annoying” just makes you sound like misogynistic chihuahua.
The world has trained us to loathe feminine voices. Don’t let it win, especially not against the marathon runners of VA—or you.

many many years ago when i was in college, i went to the student disabilities office. that was where you went if you needed accommodations. i was struggling a lot, having difficulties managing my mental health and my coursework. i finally reached a breaking point and went to ask for help.
but i didn't receive it. the disabilities office was not there to help disabled students who didn't know, down to the letter, precisely what accommodations they needed. and even then, if it was something more than "extend these deadlines" and "allow a laptop in class for note taking", it probably would have been denied.
the man i spoke to was incredibly condescending, and gave off an impression that if you were not as visibly disabled as he was, you didn't actually need help. i don't know much of that was projection or actually his intent, but i do remember being told something to the effect of "we can't help you."
so i continued to struggle in my classes. continued to watch my grades (and mental health) suffer.
you know what would have helped me? instead of that man blithely asking me that he couldn't know what accommodations i needed, and that i had to come up with some and tell him? he could have asked. one simple question.
"what part of your classes are hardest for you?"
and i'd like to hope that at that age i had at least the sense enough to push down the shame and tell him: doing any of the reading for my classes.
and a world of possibilities could have opened up. you know what would have helped me? what would have been a simple, reasonable accommodation that would have made a night and day difference in my ability to participate in my own education?
audiobooks. fucking audiobooks.
it was so damn simple.

apparently I preordered an audiobook when I had a free one from audible (yes I know but if they want to give me a poor person an audiobook I am too weak to resist, also it's how I get my stormlight archive fix every few years) and I don't know what it is and I am also afraid to check because I am a very weird coward with issues about notifications
#what could it be#i know its not stormlight archive 5 because i would be having way more an excited fit if it were#them fuckers are my number 1 comfort books to listen to and it would be cool to have a new one#sighs#last time i checked everyone was theorizing kaladin would die in 5#which i will accept with dignity but it will make me very sad because (sincere moment)#kaladin stormblessed being his depressed and traumatized and extremely ill self and both continuing anyway#but also recognizing that he couldnt continue in the same way#have helped me get through some real tough shit#also navani strangely enough who i was like okay with up until RoW#but then getting more of her experience while i was being severely emotionally abused kinda... yeah#but yeah my new audiobook isn't stormlight 5 so#maybe if i force myself to check it'll be a fun reveal#and then i can listen to a book i was apparently into enough to preorder#last new book i read was in august 🙃#and i feel such pressure to read so i can be a better writer#but i dont waaaaant toooooo because emotions can be painful and i don't want to hurt#sincere moment over#positively i have written 26kish words and i kind of have an idea of how things fit together#just gotta clme up with the overarching structure for this one#the present-past flip-flop was an accident that came from the fic starting out as a one-shot and then getting Too Fucking Long#and then i decided i liked it and had a little fun time trying to tie each part to the next with some specific imagery or theme or event#this one can't do that... or at least not in exactly the same way#i have a couple of ideas and i guess ill see what works#i like gimmicky bullshit too much and i apologize#but luckily no one has to read my fics so they can't complain that im gimmicky#on thursday i have a dreaded dentist appointment but on the plus side i have often written the best in medical waiting rooms#fingers crossed#(also on thursday i am getting a pakige with stuff that will let me set up a 2nd monitor and that is exciting)

[Book Review] YOU’RE THAT BITCH: & OTHER CUTE LESSONS ABOUT BEING UNAPOLOGETICALLY YOURSELF (AUDIOBOOK) - Bretman Rock
Tumblr media
SCORE: 4.0/5.0 . . My perspective may not be aligned with many parts of his lifestyle. But we have to admit that this multi-talented Bretman Rock is amazingly inspiring. Bak kata pepatah melayu, “Buang yang keruh, ambil yang jernih.” . So many truths he said can be offensive. But, him, being funny, cute, sassy, yet a kind of gentleman, is acceptable? Fair warning tho, be prepared with his language. Definitely, no kids are allowed! . I enjoyed the way he describe places and foods. This book is a well-delivered travelogue too. Haha. . We all live our own stories, yet we often do not know what to tell others. He is a natural storyteller. It is awesome how he structured his autobiography. It started with the highlights of his life to date. Followed by "extensive" discussions of the life events, by themes. All the struggles, how he deal with them and what can be done better. Due to this, there may be redundant phrases as we read on.
Family abuse is not okay. Hold yourself back from self-sabotaging. Be confident in your own skin. . He shared many tips and life hacks. One of my favourite discussions is on “How to stand up to your bullies” -- by being diplomatic, and compassionate. A great psychology trick. MashaAllah, great pep talk. . Being an iconic celebrity. How did post-famous affect him and transformed him better? The hardest part is to stay relevant and creative without losing our soul and mind. To handle fame, we must know our rights and adhere to our core principles. He also taught us what to consider in creating content and how to deal with criticism. . Learn to forgive yourself. Be a bad bitch but be kind. Yes, we need to adjust the pep talks values to our Islamic values. Overall, his advice covered everything, no matter where you at now in your life, inshaAllah.
One thing he shared that I love 3000: Whenever we feel lost in life, revisit our younger selves. We always plant seeds when we were young, reflect on those feelings, and don’t take things ever seriously. As we said in Islam - Tawakkal & Redha.

How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis
Quit beating yourself up for having a skill deficit when what you really have is a support deficit. Self-care was never meant to be a replacement for community care. Striving to “be better” will exhaust the little energy you have, and it’s probably time better spent letting yourself cry and sleep and finding small pockets of joy to keep you going.
Rating: ★★★★★
Summary:
Designed for neurodivergent people and those struggling with mental illness, therapist KC Davis provides tips, tricks, and compassionate messaging, to help you take care of yourself and your home when it feels impossible.
Review:
The best kind of book is one that makes you see things within yourself that you never even knew were there, and How to Keep House While Drowning, fit that description to a tee. Most of the practical solutions Davis introduced to cleaning were either not applicable to myself or things that I was already doing. In terms of cleaning and organization hacks this book really was not it for me, but what was it for me was the ways that Davis talked about cleaning. I didn’t know that I needed to be told that cleaning (or not cleaning) is not a moral activity, and that I’m not a bad person for having a messy home or being incapable of caring for myself sometimes. I didn’t realize how much of my cleaning habits were wrapped up in shame, embarrassment, and disgust towards myself. I cried listening to this audiobook, as I scrubbed the grout between the tiles of my shower, and KC Davis told me that, “[I] deserve kindness and love regardless of how good I am at care tasks.” I didn’t know how much of my self worth was tied to my fucked-up ideas about the cleanliness of my home and my own body, but now that I do maybe I can start to unravel them and be a freer, less burnt out, version of myself. I haven’t read many self-help books, mostly because I find them preachy and borderline accusatory, but How to Keep House While Drowning, might even be deserving of a reread for how much I felt legitimately seen and understood.

"12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos" by Jordan Peterson is a self-help book that provides guidance on how to live a meaningful and fulfilling life. The book draws on a range of sources, including mythology, religion, and psychology, to provide a holistic view of personal growth and self-improvement.
In the book, Peterson lays out 12 rules that can help individuals to navigate the challenges and uncertainties of life. The rules range from the importance of standing up straight with your shoulders back, to taking responsibility for your own life and pursuing meaning and purpose. Throughout the book, Peterson provides practical advice and relatable examples to help illustrate each rule.
One of the strengths of "12 Rules for Life" is its integration of various philosophical and psychological ideas into a cohesive framework. Peterson presents a compelling case for the importance of taking personal responsibility, developing self-awareness, and seeking meaning in life. The book is written in an accessible and engaging style, making it easy for readers to understand and apply the principles outlined.
Additionally, the book provides a refreshing perspective on the role of tradition and cultural heritage in shaping our lives. Peterson argues that our traditional values and beliefs, despite their flaws, provide a necessary foundation for our individual and collective wellbeing.
In conclusion, "12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos" is a thought-provoking and insightful book that provides practical guidance for navigating the complexities of life. Whether you're seeking self-improvement or just looking for a new perspective, this book is definitely worth checking out.

i’m pretty sure studying abroad was a poor decision with regards to every single aspect of my life, but i’m saying this sick and tired and after a long day of being on a mandatory field trip i’ve been dreading all week so. grain of salt etc
#doesn’t help that i just finished listening to a self described cozy mystery audiobook set in oxford#& so now i’m nostalgic and utterly convinced i should have gone to england#but still. i am trying to be positive i am trying to keep an open mind i am Putting Myself Out There as much as i’ve been able#i’ve been talking to people i’ve been asking questions i’ve been making conversation i’ve been searching desperately for someone i like#but also like. if i could get my money back and go home right now. or go to a different program even. i would in a heartbeat#a diff program wouldn’t solve everything but it would solve the academic failure of this program#which is that i’m not interested in any of the classes i’m taking bc i’m trying desperately to take classes that fulfill major requirements#but that’s almost impossible here esp for psych which is the one i need credits for#and so on an academic level this program is a waste of my time and actually actively harming me academically and i very well might have to#take a summer class. bc i can’t meet all my requirements in time#and then on a social level. well it’s me#i don’t like anyone yet and of COURSE bc its fucking day 6 but i have talked. to so many people. and it’s so hard#AND on a culinary level i don’t like any of the food here and i have to figure out how to feed myself and i genuinely considered just buying#a pallet of meal replacement shakes and drinking those. but i don’t even know if i can buy those here#anyway it would all be fine if i was just lonely and didn’t like the food that’s to be expected im homesick#but this program is like actually literally negatively impacting my degree progress and i not only would be happier but would be on a much#more stable path to graduation if i wasn’t doing it#i wish i had picked a better program I WISH I WAS TAKING CLASSES. AT A LOCAL UNIVERSITY. IN ENGLISH. AND NOT AT A STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM#HQ WITH EXCLUSIVELY OTHER AMERICANS!!! WHAT IS THE POINT?????#personal#isa bcn

Growth Mindset and the "How to Chase Change" Audiobook Experience
I am admittedly skeptical of self-help books. One of my favorite podcasts is “If Books Could Kill“, an entire series of audio essays dedicated to debunking airport bestsellers that are, more often than not, classified under the self-help umbrella. Still, there was something about How to Chase Change by Alexis Fernandez-Preiksa that made me feel like it could be different. The main concept of…
